COMMUNITY SUPPORT FAREWELL GOODBYE AU REVOIR As the heading indicates both Chantal and I are leaving the position of Community Support Officer with Mosman Community Care (ADS). My last day at work will be Thursday 26 October 2017 and Chantal is leaving just prior to that on Friday 13 October. It is sad for me to say goodbye, especially to those I have come to know over the past eleven years. Many people come to the centre as a form of respite from their day to day lives and to enjoy the environment, activities and friendly company, the centre provides, I have seen what a bonus it is for those who attend. I hope also I have contributed to the wellbeing of those I have touched during my journey. The centre of course would not function without the dedicated staff who give so much of themselves to ensure the centre lives up to expectations. I will miss them all, the buzz and even the drama that often ensues on an average day. Most of all I will miss working with my colleague Chantal Kerr. We have supported each other through both the highs and the lows of the job and I am sure we will keep in touch. Chantal will tell you more about her exciting new venture, for myself, I am merely looking forward to retirement and whatever that brings me.
Farewell, Goodbye Au Revoir Lyn Dear all, Lyn is right, never a dull moment! I will never cease to marvel at our ability, as a team, to rally and manage to deliver the best possible outcomes to our local residents whilst providing them with a friendly, safe and (hopefully) entertaining program. Those of you who know our Seniors Centre well will probably agree that this is a pretty special place for pretty colourful people whom I had the privilege to meet over my last nine years of employment with Mosman Council, without counting the hundreds of residents met during home visits and social group activities. Unforgettable memories! After 37 years spent in Sydney, it is now time for me to say au revoir and to embark on a new journey which is about to lead me back to France, my homeland. But my love affair with Australia is not over as fate is taking me to Pozieres, this well known French village in the Somme area, where so many Anzac soldiers perished during WW1 and where I will be planting new roots. Incidentally, and for your information, an exciting joint venture between Australia and France is currently taking shape in Pozieres, with the construction of a bi-lingual primary school in the heart of this historic village and the involvement of Australian architects and teaching staff to name a few. This unique venture between our two countries will offer French children living in the Somme area, a bi-lingual education with a definite Australian flavour, (and accent) incorporated in their day to day school curriculum, a testimony to the Australian legacy, on French soil. It has been a privilege knowing you all, including staff. A special thank you to Lyn with whom I worked very closely in the past few years. I always found much inspiration in Lyn's dedication and support to the local community.

CARERS PROGRAM If you are looking after someone who has an illness, a disability or dementia please join us. You will benefit enormously from the valuable information provided by our guest speakers and the friendship and support of other Carers. Take that first step, you won’t regret it. The group meets every Wednesday from 10.00 am till 12.00 pm in the Harnett Room at Mosman Council. “Two of the most valuable aspects of attending the group have been the knowledge I obtained and the friendships I’ve made, this has helped me through a very difficult time.” “It is so comforting to know that there is help and support out there.” “Caring can be a lonely task, sharing with others in a similar situation is very helpful.” “Thank you to Mosman Council for recognising the need and providing the support.” “ I just keep coming back because the group is so supportive and the speakers invaluable.”
In term 4, the guest speakers will talk about: "Dysfunctional Doctor/Patient Relationships“ “Yoga for Beginners“ “Transitioning to Residential Care“ "Quality of Life, How is Yours? Find Out Ways of Improving Your Thoughts and Bodily Health” Dates For your diary: Wednesday 29 November: Full Bus Trip celebrating Carers Week Wednesday 13 December: Christmas Lunch For more information, contact Liz Nagel on 9978 4089 or 9978 4128 (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) or by email: L.Nagel@mosman.nsw.gov.au or check Council’s website www.mosman.nsw.gov.au/ community/carers

AGEING WELL Can dance and art keep the mind and body young? Proponents of the arts have long argued that creative therapy can help ageing patients. Now, scientists have begun investigating that claim. Shula Strassfeld holds back the emotion as she describes dancing with her 92-year-old father, a wheelchair-using victim of dementia. "I went to visit him for his birthday and we danced. We put on some music and I moved his wheelchair around. The look on his face was absolutely priceless," she says. "Even though the next day he didn't remember it had happened, his soul remembered. His body remembered. There was something in him that had changed because of that experience. He was more alert, he was more active - and I just wish I could do that every day." Strassfeld, 66, is a professional dancer, teacher, and member of Dance Exchange, a Washington DC-based company that has collaborated with neuroscientists and independent health organisations to explore the benefits of music and movement for older people. She says the anecdotal evidence of these benefits is overwhelming. Now, researchers are beginning to suggest that her attempt to connect with her father through dance may have scientific merit. Studies show that dance might benefit dementia sufferers through its ability to stimulate many different functions of the brain. "A choreographed dance is not only one in which a person is gaining physical aerobic capacity, but they're also listening to music and moving their body in unison with that," says Thomas Prohaska, dean of the College of Health and Human Services at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. "What's happening is that participants are beginning to understand the nature of movement and sequencing. As a function of that they improve cognitive skills that don't normally show up in other forms of intervention." "The healthcare system really needs to pay attention much more than it has in the past to primary prevention among older adults, to improve the health of individuals and help them maintain it," says Prohaska. "I would suggest that art has a major role. Where it stands in the scheme of things is yet to be determined." And as the need for cost-effective healthcare increases, Hanna believes the arts will play a greater role in healthy ageing. "The evidence for the arts and humanities has grown exponentially over the last 20 years," she says. "Just 20 years ago, the field of physical activity and aging was in its infancy and now everyone recognizes the potential impact on chronic conditions, primary prevention, and cognitive status. It turns out that the arts could have a beneficial impact too. "Hopefully it won't take us 20 years to get to that level." Source: By Jane O'Brien, BBC News, Washington , March 2013

MOSMAN SENIORS BUS TRIP Here are some amazing sketches drawn by Peter Turnbull in late 2015 to 2017, when on the Community bus outings organised by Mosman Council. If you would like to share your talent, please give us a call on 9978 4128. The sketches below were done either in biro or felt pen, and were coloured in at home mainly with Aquarelle water based pencils, a lazy way of water - colouring! “The Hunter Valley Gardens are always a pleasure to visit. In our grandparents’ day they would have actually been designed as Pleasure Gardens. A fairly new installation is the reorientation of the local creek to make what is called “The Sunken garden”, with ponds, rocks and waterfalls and a goodly display of waterresistant planting. “ (23/01/2016)
“Fitzroy Falls was far from being a torrent in August 2016; in fact it had dwindled to two small but gushing “swallow’s flights”. The Cambewarra ranges were very dry and the cliffs sparkled in the heat. “ (27/08/2016) “On the right, The Warragamba Dam was very impressive, especially the memorial to all the men who had died during the many years of its construction. “ (25/02/2017)
