Dear Readers, Welcome to our latest newsletter! We at the Mosman Community Centre hope you all enjoyed the year-end festivities. Our Christmas lunch is always a great way to end the year with friends and volunteers and another example of the importance of sharing friendship with those in your community. Last quarter we sadly said goodbye to three of our team members: Chantal Kerr and Lyn Kelleher from the Community Intake Team who have retired after a combined 22 years of service and Steven Walker, our Volunteer Support Officer. They will be missed by all. Early next year, we will be seeing some new faces coming on board so come to the centre and say hello. In 2018, you can expect even more from Mosman Community Centre. We have moved the Movie Matinee from Friday to every second Thursday of the month starting from 12noon. You can now enjoy a movie with a light lunch for $8. So grab a friend, family member or maybe even a grandchild and stay cool and entertained. The beginning of the year is always a great time to start a new activity. Why not think about joining one of our many exercise programs, the Laughter Therapy group or speak your mind at our weekly discussion group. Note there are some time and day changes from last year’s program so please call us to confirm dates and times on 9978-4128. Please ask at the reception desk for our events calendar or subscribe to our electronic newsletter to be informed of all the latest news and events. Along with new activities and programs we will also continue our information sessions where presenters will be discussing topics such as coping with memory loss and dementia, and understanding the Federal Governments aged care system known as My Aged Care. If there’s an area you feel you would like more information please let us know. We appreciate all feedback as this allows us to tailor programs and continue to grow and serve the community of Mosman in the greatest way possible. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a safe and Happy New Year and we hope to see you soon at the centre!

COMMUNITY SUPPORT The importance of connecting to people Being connected to your community increase your happiness, well-being and prospects for the future. When you interact with a group of like-minded people you build and strengthen your links to the community around you. Mosman Council has many programs that provide seniors with opportunities to connect through shared purposeful activities. We currently have a thriving discussion group chaired by our volunteer, Joy Annand. This group meets twice a month to discuss everything from local and international politics to ethical scenarios to literature and the arts. For our twice-yearly outings in 2018, we'll be visiting the Kimbriki Eco House and Garden Centre and the North Head Quarantine Station. Due to high demand we are looking to kick off a second discussion group in 2018. Please call 9978 4128 to register your interest. Saturday Social Club is an outing for frail elderly people and/or those affected by memory loss. A door-to-door pick-up and drop-off service that visit local points of interest such as museums, art galleries, parks and scenic spots. In warm weather we have picnics in local parks. If rainy we return to the Mosman Square Seniors' Centre to have a lunch, play games and do exercises. Call us on 9978 4119 for bookings. For older adults (individuals or couples), the Care CafĂŠ offers a break with tea, coffee and cake for a gold coin donation every third Tuesday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Come in and enjoy chatting with friends in a relaxed environment. We'd love to see you, the more the merrier! Mosman Community Care is always looking to connect our clients to their community. We offer the above programs and more for local Mosman residents to take advantage of. Please come by and see us sometime!

News! We would like to introduce you a new staff member Marina Whitting who will be taking over the CARE Programs Officer position commencing on January 2, 2018. Marina replaces Chantal Kerr in this role. Originally from the UK, she arrived 31 years ago when she decided to make Australia her permanent home. She holds Diplomas in Community Services and Case Management, as well as Cert IV in Information, Advice & Referral. She worked for over 6 years in each of her last two positions with not for profit organisations gaining extensive experience working in the aged care sector, with carers and in mental health. Marinas role at Mosman: Provide support, information on the wonderful services available through Mosman Community Care, in-home assessments and referral to other services that will assist local residents to live a full and independent life in the community. Marina will also facilitate the Saturday Social Club and the Care CafĂŠ. We hope you make her feel very welcome!

CARERS PROGRAM About 1 in 9 Australians are carers. They provide unpaid care for family or friends who have an illness, dementia or a disability but often people don't see themselves as carers, but as wives, husbands, parents etc. However you see yourself, you will definitely benefit from attending the Mosman Carers group which meets every Wednesday morning from 10am till 12pm in the Harnett Room at Mosman Council. The group provides information, support and referrals in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The benefits are enormous, if a carer has strong support and is able to feel comfortable asking for help and advice, they will be able both physically and mentally to continue in the caring role. VOLUNTEERING Leading the Good Life Through Volunteering Studies have shown that volunteering is just as beneficial for the volunteer as it is for the recipient. Volunteering is good for your mind and body, develops skills, advances your career, connects you to others in the community and can give you a sense of joy and fulfilment from helping people. Mosman Council has a vibrant volunteer program. We are currently seeking volunteers to assist with social support for the elderly. This could be as simple as helping with the shopping at the local supermarket, taking someone to an appointment, or just dropping by for a cup of tea and a chat. If you’d like to make a positive difference to someone in your community then we would love to hear from you. Please contact our Volunteer Office on 9978 4126 or e-mail voluteer@mosman.nsw.gov.au

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” Elizabeth Andrew
