From the Editor's Desk Dear readers, Winter is back, and it is freezing!!! Remember to be careful of burns if you are using water bottles! In this issue you will find the traditional articles for transport, community support, the restaurant, volunteering, and much more! This year again, we will have a Tax Return program here at the Centre with Clare and John, our fantastic volunteer experts. If you need assistance with your Tax Return, please contact Olivier on 9978 4128, who will book you in with them. This is a free service! Also, keep in mind that after 1st July the prices of our services change slightly. The restaurant will be $10 for a meal and $12 for the special big luncheons. Community Transport has also updated their costs; make sure you have a look at the new pricing in the transport article in this newsletter. We would like to mention again that we are trying to put together a chess group, please let me know if you are interested. We would happily host a little tournament if there were enough players around so call Olivier on 9978 4128 to get registered with the group. In the same way, some of the other activities, such as Mah-jong, Scrabble, the Tuesday exercise class, the bingo on Thursdays, are recruiting; we always need more people for those activities. We are also trying to put together a “movie afternoon” here at the Centre (on Friday afternoons after the restaurant) where we could feature classic films. For any information or bookings, any questions, suggestions, call Olivier on 9978 4128. Last but not least, you will have noticed that the Table Tennis on Tuesdays has been put on hold. We are very sorry for this situation for the moment. We are looking at another possible venue to welcome players, and will advertise the new details as soon as possible. We will also celebrate the Knitting Group’s fourth birthday in June. They have dedicated their time to looking after others by contributing so many blankets to the Wrap with Love charity. Congratulations to all of them for their amazing efforts and involvement! Last but not least, we hope you all have had the flu shots. The latest reports show that the Lower North Shore has been badly affected; safety comes first, go and see your GP if you are not feeling too well! The ADS Team

Dear Lord, So far today, I’m doing alright. I have not gossiped, lost my temper, been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish or self-indulgent. I have not whined, complained, cursed or eaten chocolate. I have charged nothing on my credit card. But I will be getting out of bed in a minute and I think I will really need your help then. Alison Hunt Grandma Suddenly elder status doesn’t feel so bleak, holding your grandchild is quite unique. The start of a wonderful time of loving and giving, all that warmth makes life worth living. You share all the heartaches and all the joys too, and help when you’re needed as families do. Always keen to do more but are wisely reminded, to step back a little and the stepping is timely. Sports days, prize giving, music, the arts, grand parents clapping with pride in their hearts, budding geniuses without a doubt, I’m sure some of my genes are lurking about. Happy kids growing up before your eyes. What a privilege it’s been to be part of their lives. The present we wrapped and chose with great care, swapped by vouchers — ”got to have the right gear!” Years pass quickly and your needing is done, the best times and we did have fun, Remember the magic when it all began, with those wonderful words “now you are a Gran” Long gone are the days when we played in the sand, but we will always hold close with our open hands. So you Grans don’t feel sad and sigh, we may be great Grans bye and bye. Stella Davis

One day Bill and Tom went to a restaurant for dinner. The waiter brought out two steaks for their approval and Bill immediately picked out the bigger steak for himself. Bill wasn’t at all happy about that. “You should learn to be more polite” he said to Tom. Bill replied “If you had a chance to pick first, which would you have chosen?” “The smaller one” said Tom. “Well then, what are you talking about? You’ve got what you wanted” said Bill.

Community Support Welcome to our new Community Support Officer. As you know at the beginning of this year, Ros McLoughlin resigned after many years of service with Aged & Disability Services. I would now like to let you know that a familiar face to ADS, Chantal Kerr has been appointed two days per week, Thursday and Friday in the position of Community Support Officer. Chantal commenced on the 12 May and I would like to welcome her to the role. I will continue to work 5 days a week and look forward to the assistance Chantal will be able to provide in ensuring that Mosman residents who are frail aged, those with a disability and their carers are provided with information, support and appropriate referrals. To ensure you get to know Chantal, I have asked her to write something about herself as follows:

Hello everyone, My name is Chantal Kerr and I am the new part-time Community Support Officer. In this new role, I will be assisting Lyn Kelleher, the full-timeCommunity Support Officer. My other role consists of coordinating the fortnightly Saturday Respite Service, another successful Council initiative, launched in 2008. Born and educated in Paris, France, I moved to Australia in 1982 and settled on the North Shore. Twelve years ago, I changed my career path, embracing community work, and I have never looked back. So far, my involvement with the community has included working with seniors, people with intellectual and physical disabilities as well as families and children at risk, with organisations such as Uniting Care Ageing, Centacare, The Benevolent Society, Willoughby Council and the French Benevolent Society of NSW. I completed a Welfare diploma in 2002. If you would like to discuss any service or support needs, please phone 9978 4119 or make a time to come to the office and Chantal and I will be available to assist you in any way we can. Lyn Kelleher Community Support Officer

Congratulations to our Knitting Group! It’s their fourth birthday in June. They have dedicated their time to looking after others by contributing many blankets to the ‘Wrap with Love’ charity. ‘Wrap with Love’ a non profit charity began in 1992 and since then has donated over 255,322 wraps to over 75 countries, including Australia, with the generous help of volunteers such as our Knitting Group. Congratulations to our knitting group for their amazing efforts and involvement! Unassembled squares received at the Wrap with Love warehouse.

Tax Return assistance will be available here at the Centre with Clare and John, our fantastic volunteer experts. If you need help with your Tax Return, please contact Olivier on 9978 4128, who will book you in with them. This is a free service but there are some restrictions to access.

MOVIES We are thinking of having “movie afternoons” here at the Centre (on Friday afternoons after the restaurant) where we would feature classic films. For any information or bookings, any questions, or suggestions, call Olivier on 9978 4128.

Caring for Carers Mosman Carers Group began more than 7 years ago in response to an identified need for a local support group. Service providers and carers were consulted about how the group should be set up. The outcome was a group that meets weekly in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere every Wednesday morning from 10am to 12 noon in the Harnett Rooms at Mosman Council. The group is an open one and those who attend care for family and friends with illnesses ranging from Dementia/Alzheimers disease to terminal illness and physical disabilities as well as mental health issues. There are weekly guest speakers and these important and informative sessions cover subjects such as Dementia/ Alzheimers disease, grief and loss, legal issues, relaxation and meditation and more. There are monthly support group/get togethers when carers meet to have chat over a cup of tea and every three months there is a full day bus outing. Carers find these outings a wonderful break and respite from their caring role. Feedback from carers has been very positive, saying they find the group extremely valuable,

appreciate the information, guest speakers and referrals as well as the relaxed, friendly atmosphere and laughter which plays a big part in the meetings, and wonderful friendships formed. A vital part of the group is the friendship and support carers give one another, they know only too well the highs and lows, frustrations and difficulties of being a carer and are able to listen and offer advice and understanding. One carer said “I would not have survived without the Carers group”. Another said “I value the group so much, I was never able to open up about my feelings but now find I can speak freely about how I feel, it has been an amazing help.” The weekly meetings are not only valuable for the information and support carers receive, they also act as respite, a short break or “time out” for carers, the full day outings are also a well needed, often vital break for carers. If you are caring for someone, or you know someone who is, please contact me on 99784089 for more information. Warm regards, Liz Nagel, Carers Group Facilitator Phone: 9978 4089 Mobile: 0419 784 089

What’s On at Mosman Library Mosman Faces, recently launched, is about people and places; a place on the internet to share your stories of Mosman. In this first series of Mosman Faces ten people tell stories that have shaped the Mosman community. The stories create a visual history of Mosman through film and through images from Mosman Library’s Local Studies collection. We aim to build on these interviews through your comments and responses to the stories and the snaps. Mosman’s story is ongoing and we need you to tell it with us, to bring it to life and preserve it for present and future generations.

Do you have a story or photo to contribute? History is not just the distant past. Mosman’s story is alive and we need you to help us tell it.  Post a head-and-shoulders photo to the Mosman Faces Flickr group  Add your story and photos to Mosman Memories of Your Street  Email Local Studies at Mosman Library If you do not use the internet, never mind, someone can help or do it for you! Contact Mosman Library on 9978 4090.

Author Evening: Jane Clifton, author of ‘The Address Book’. Where do you call home? What makes a home? Is home where the heart is? Child of a pukkah English officer and a very badly behaved daughter of the British Raj, Jane Clifton grew up perpetually on the move as the family followed her father’s army postings all over the world.

As an adult, living in the fast-moving worlds of anti-war demos, women’s lib, experimental theatre, rock ‘n’ roll, and TV, she kept up the family tradition of changing addresses without so much as a backward glance. Jane’s parents both died young, a loss that left her with many haunting questions. This is the story of Jane’s search for answers and a funny, frank, engaging memoir of her life along the way. Adults $10, pensioners and students $8 (passes must be shown). Enquiries 9978 4091.

What’s on at Mosman Art Gallery The Many Faces of Bungaree: Lecture by Dr Keith Vincent Smith Thu 23 June, 6:30pm The eminent historian, author and curator will discuss Bungaree’s life and story. Bungaree, known as the Chief of the Broken Bay Aborigines, was a central figure in early Colonial Sydney. As an Aboriginal leader, he was the first person known to have been called an ‘Australian’. His story presents a rich and layered history of one man’s remarkable exploits and ability to navigate calamitous times to become a highly respected leader, and bridge between Aboriginal and white cultures.

Flashback—1970 weather Over most of the country the 1970s stand in marked contrast to the normal - and generally well deserved - image of Australia as a dry country. Instead, continual rainfall and widespread flooding was the norm, in what was easily the wettest decade of the 20th century. Though 1970 itself was dry over much of the country, it ended on a wet note in the east, with record or near-record December rains from far southern Tasmania to Roma in Queensland. Wet, stormy conditions continued in the east in early 1971 - a La Niña year. In January flash flooding in Canberra’s Woden Valley took seven lives, and serious flooding also affected Victoria’s Gippsland District. Heavy rains fell across inland areas in March and April; and in June, cloudbands extending from the tropics dumped 150-200mm over normally arid parts of northwest Australia: nearly a year’s rainfall in a month. The 1971-72 Wet set in early over northern Australia, and record or near-record November rains affected large areas; in Melbourne, an intense depression early in the month generated the worst flooding since 1934. A “heavy track” at Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, a few days after the 1971 Melbourne Cup, following the worst flooding in many years. This scene was typical of large areas of Australia during the early to mid-1970s (photo courtesy of The Herald and Weekly Times Photographic Collection). www.bom.gov.au/lam/ climate/levelthree/c20thc/flip6.htm
