The Images of Mosman Bay From its wild and woolly days to the confines of urbanisation Mosman Bay has had a charm and mystery that continues to appeal to residents and visitors. A selection of photographs and postcards from the Mosman Local Studies Collection shows the various guises of Mosman Bay over the decades. This secluded bay served many uses and offered many attractions. In 1788 it provided a haven for the HMS Sirius and maintained a distance between the crew and the evils of the new settlement across Sydney Harbour. In 1831 the bay found a use as the location for Archibald Mosman’s whaling station, then the setting for a few essential but noxious industries and at one point it even resembled a junk yard with sinking discarded ships. When developer, H.S. Harnett subsidised a weekend ferry to the bay in the 1870s its other charms became more apparent. The bay was an ideal retreat for day trippers happy to picnic by the waterfall, drop into the small hotel or refreshment rooms, attend a dance in the dance hall, skate in the skating rink or walk across the exotically named Bolivia Bridge. The sheer variety of images that have been collected over the years shows not only the changing face of Mosman Bay but the value of a Local Studies Collection in recording a community’s heritage. Genealogy at Mosman Library Family history research has never been so popular and people of all ages are enjoying the challenges and rewards of learning about their ancestors. In order to keep up with this new leisure activity and satisfy the demand for the latest information available Mosman Library continually adds to its already extensive genealogy collection. The genealogy collection comprises numerous guides on how to search your family history and many Australian historic records on CD, microfiche and microfilm. Mosman Library also subscribes to two online genealogy websites. Ancestry.com (library edition) was the first site the library offered and noting its popularity with library patrons we decide to investigate the usefulness of other online databases and after much consideration decided on Findmypast.com.au. Findmypast.com.au allows access to over 650 million records from Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Papua New Guinea and the UK and is regularly updated with new records. Australian records such as cemetery registers, electoral rolls, police gazettes, government and military records, migration records, probate, land, court and religious records, biographical records and regional and general histories are just a few of the records now available. UK records include census collections 1841‐1911 and at the moment this is the only access to the 1911 UK census data. Also available are births, marriages and deaths records dating from the mid‐1800s to 2006, Divorce indexes from 1858 to 1903, Parish records dating from the early 1500s, and various war records such as the Boer War. Access to these websites is free of charge and all you need do is come into Mosman Library or call the Local Studies Librarian Donna Braye on 99784101 for further information.

Our Story
A Few Minutes With…
To kickstart the launch of the National Year of Reading 2012 the organisers are searching for 8 books (one for each state and territory) that sum up the typical Australian experience. A panel of independent experts has chosen a shortlist and it is now up to us to vote for the books that we think epitomize the people, culture and the land of Australia. In NSW the following titles are on the shortlist so if you haven’t already read them you better start. Voting goes from November 1st 2011 until January 6th 2012 and is as easy as picking up a form from the library desk or going online to the ABC website. www.abc.net.au/arts/yearofreading
