We kick off the Out&About – Springtime Events calendar in Mosman with all the four-legged fun of Pet’s Day Out on Sunday 24 October. Pet’s Day Out takes place on Allan Border Oval and promises to be a non-stop day for pets, kids and adults alike. Register on the day and be a part of the shows and competitions, dress your pets for the occasion or show off your unusual furry or scaly friends. Also on 24 October, Sacred Heart will be running an Environmental Fair and Blessing of the Animals at the church from 12–4pm. As part of the Blessing of the Animals by the Franciscan monks a public appeal will be launched to commission and erect a public artwork to celebrate and commemorate Companion Animals in Mosman. The proposed artwork is to reflect the bonds between animals and humans, in the spirit of St Francis of Assisi. On the same day headline act Hayley Warner, an Australian Idol finalist, is set to rock Mosman. Talented local youth will also take to the stage in an afternoon of music, dance, vocal and comedy, as part of a free Beat the Blues community concert aimed at raising awareness of mental health issues affecting youth. The event is supported by the Black Dog Institute and other youth mental health organisations that will be providing information and resources throughout the afternoon. Other events in October are about bringing people together and these events include the fabulous Children’s Fair on Friday 29 and Mosman’s first Big Lunch, Sunday 31. At the Children’s Fair parents, carers and young ones will have a chance to interact while also enjoying entertainment options galore. Amusement rides, face painting and an animal farm are just part of the fun. Mosman’s Big Lunch promises to bring together people of all ages in around the central themes of friendship and food. Mosman Home Gardeners’ Society and Mosman Community Gardeners have joined with Council to promote beautiful home-grown produce on the Village Green. The ever-popular Hunter Valley Uncorked will be back at Balmoral on Sunday 7 November. This event provides a relaxing afternoon for all ages, set amidst the beautiful surrounds of Balmoral. Guests can enjoy quality produce and wine from the Hunter Valley. Don’t miss all the fun!

Recent Acquisition for Art Collection A 1946 Archibald Prize portrait of Mosman identity Corporal William Smith by the artist William Manuel has recently been accepted into the Mosman Art Collection. It was assessed by the Gallery’s curatorial panel as a striking painting with excellent provenance and good links with Mosman. The following description provided by the artist’s son, Bruce Manuel provides some background to the work. “My father, William Antoni Manuel, was for many years the manager of a well known local business in the ’40/50/60s era... ‘the Mosman Meat Service’ – situated in Military Road, Mosman Junction, facing the entrance to Avenue Road, about six shops down and on the same side as Tony/Dom Lopez’ fruitery. He was a ‘minor celebrity’ in the area and well thought of by his clientele – from noted politicians and sportsmen of the time, the then Head Master of Mosman High School, (a Mr. Dixon), as well as a wide range of loyal customers. What most people did not know about William (Bill) Manuel, was that he was a talented artist in all the mediums of the day, and held his own in comparison to many prominent artists of the time. This was proven on a number of occasions, notably when he was accepted for an early Mosman Art Prize and on two occasions the prestigious Archibald Prize. This 1946 painting is a study, in oils, of William Smith, a younger relative of my father, who served in New Guinea with the then Australian Commonwealth Forces.” Image: Bruce Manuel with his father’s painting of William Smith.
