Meet the team Steven Walker, Volunteers ph: 9978 4126 e: s.walker@mosman.nsw.gov.au Who I am: I am from the Central Coast and have spent most of my career in landscape gardening. The move to Sydney brought with it a career change, and after finishing a degree in Social Research and Policy I sought a new direction in community services, specifically working with volunteers What I do at Mosman: I am the main point of call for all current and prospective volunteers at Council. I am able to provide information on volunteering opportunities available and run the recruitment process to bring new volunteers on board. I also coordinate the Community Visitors Scheme, where volunteers visit residents of residential aged care homes to provide social support What I can assist you with: I can provide information on all things volunteering. Should you need advice on where to start or what to do, I can help steer you in the right direction.

Lyn Kelleher, Community Support (Social) ph: 9978 4119 e: l.kelleher@mosman.nsw.gov.au Who I am: I have been working in the community sector for over 25 years. After completing a Diploma of Social Science I commenced work at the Northern Beaches Neighbourhood Service in 1991 as the Co-ordinator of the Community Information Van. We took information out into the community, visiting local shopping centres and groups. In 1994 I moved into the centre as the Centre Co-ordinator and also relieved as the Manager of the centre over several extended periods. In 2006 I came to Mosman Council in the role of Community Support Officer. What I Do at Mosman: I work with my colleague Chantal Kerr, to provide information, referral and social support. We receive funding for the program which delivers support to Mosman residents who are frail aged, those with a disability and their carers. What I Can Assist You With: Chantal and I are available at the Seniors’ Centre to assist with information on services and support available in the community. In the provision of Social Support, we work with a team of volunteers who assist people with friendly visits, outings, companionship, assisted shopping and small tasks. You can visit us at the Centre or contact us by phone and e-mail. We are also available to provide home visits to discuss your needs and support you to access the most appropriate services. 4

Claire Mullins, Community Restaurant ph: 9978 4123 e: c.mullins@mosman.nsw.gov.au Who I am: I was originally a Volunteer for over a year in the Restaurant and was keen to take on the position of Restaurant Co-ordinator when Mary retired. My background is in Catering and School Canteens providing children with nutritious and delicious meals. What I do at Mosman: I organise the Community Restaurant which takes place every Tuesday and Friday and I also co-ordinate the fabulous Volunteers that serve you. Once a month when we have our special 'Theme Lunches', which are always so much fun, I source the entertainment and decorate the centre so you can sit back and have a fantastic time. What I can assist you with: If you have a special dietary requirement I am more than happy to help, please come and see me or let Olivier know before the lunch date. If you know of someone at lunch who is having a birthday, let me know and we will sing them 'Happy Birthday'. If you are wanting to dine with a large group, this can be arranged for you beforehand with a bigger table. I am always happy to receive your feedback on the Restaurant and what we could do to improve.

Olivier Strobel, Centre Activities ph: 9978 4128 e: o.strobel@mosman.nsw.gov.au Who I am: I am from Paris 13, France, my background is in Social Sciences and I have been at the Seniors Centre for 7 years. I enjoy spending time with my children aged 2.5 and 6.5 years old, and I love football! What I do at Mosman: I coordinate activities at the Centre, organise programs and liaise between people, group leaders and the office. I make sure that the Centre operates nicely and can assist you with enquiries at reception or over the phone. What I can assist you with: I might often be the first point of contact when you call or come to the Centre; I enjoy helping people and assisting them with what they need. Come and talk to me if you need any assistance, if you need computer classes, if you think of organising an activity, or if you have feedback. I am always happy to try to help!

Liz Nagel, Carers ph: 9978 4089 e: l.nagel@mosman.nsw.gov.au Who I am: I have worked at Mosman Council for many years, first coordinating Volunteers and then working with Carers. I love reading, travelling and entertaining friends and family. What I do at Mosman: I facilitate the Carers Group which meets every Wednesday in the Harnett Room at Council and provide information and support to Carers. What I can assist you with: If you are caring for someone with dementia, an illness or disability the caring role can sometimes seem a little overwhelming. Our group has regular guest speakers covering a range of subjects and friendly discussions in an informal atmosphere. 5

CARERS PROGRAM Be active, healthy and engaged The caring role can sometimes be physically and emotionally draining and many carers put their own needs last. Carers may also find that due to their caring role they need to develop new skills and knowledge, and at times may often feel alone or unsupported. This can be overwhelming. It is important that carers make their own wellbeing a priority and keep healthy, both mentally and physically. One way to do this is to come along to the Mosman Carers Group. The group provides ongoing support, information, advice and assistance for carers, and the opportunity to talk things over with others in a similar situation is invaluable. If you are a carer I strongly urge you to come along, I think you will find the experience very valuable. The group meets every Wednesday morning from 10am to 12pm in the Harnett Room at Mosman Council. The meetings are relaxed and friendly and there are regular guest speakers covering a range of topics. For more information contact Liz, Carers Program Coordinator (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) on 9978 4089 or e-mail l.nagel@mosman.nsw.gov.au

VOLUNTEERING We are looking at a number of new opportunities for volunteering at the moment. Whether you are interested in becoming a volunteer, or already volunteer, or if you are interested to see what other opportunities are out there please call Steven Walker on 9978 4126 or email s.walker@mosman.nsw.gov.au for more information. 14

Mosman going Plastic Free in July This year, Mosman Council is getting serious about single-use plastic waste. Mosman Council is partnering with businesses and schools to highlight the issues surrounding single-use plastics and their persistence in our natural environment. What is Plastic Free July? Plastic Free July is a fun challenge that gets us thinking about the amount of plastic packaging in our lives. Why Participate?  Australians send 1 million tonnes of plastic to landfill each year and too much plastic ends up as litter  Chemicals in plastics can have harmful effects on our health  Join the PFJ network and join us at events, workshops and online discussion forums at www.plasticfreejuly.org

Let’s work together to reduce single-use plastic in our community! Free Event

Happy snaps

Our themed restaurant lunches are a huge success. We had a Mexican extravaganza in May and in June were joined by The Hon. Mr Tony Abbott Member for Warringah for our Guringai Lunch. If you have any photos of our events that you can share please e-mail them to us and we will try and feature them in our newsletter. E-mail O.strobel@mosman.nsw.gov.au

Here is our very first Albert Smart electronic payment user Nan (pictured). We were so excited to receive this technology at the centre that we had to take a photo. It took a second to process and issued an instant receipt. So next time you come to the centre and you have forgotten to go to the ATM to get money, don’t worry, you can now pay with your debit card or credit card on the spot. We encourage everyone to try it. It will make our life and YOUR life much easier!
