MAD! – a mature age contemporary dance project for the young at heart but not so young of body. The MAD! Dance idea was formed towards the end of 2017 as part of Mosman Council’s Creative Ageing Celebration. The group hopes to recruit members and rehearse at the Mosman Square Seniors Centre every Friday morning during term time and hope to perform at many local events in the future. If this sounds like you, and if you would like to learn how older bodies can move creatively - with energy, beauty and grace, then join the movement today.

DEAR READERS Welcome to our Autumn edition of ‘Active, Healthy and Engaged’. After the very successful trials for MAD! (Mature Age Dancing) last October, we are starting a Contemporary Dance class here at the Centre on Fridays from 10.15am-11.15am from June and hope this will be a very popular program. Research has found dancing improves strength and muscle function in older adults, as well as increasing balance and flexibility, leading to better stability and fewer injuries. It also improves your cardiovascular health. For more information call 9978 4128. Classes start in June and spaces are limited! In late May we will have a technology forum at the Centre, where we will explain social media and help you learn how to use your electronic devices (phones, tablets and iPads). This forum will be as practical as possible and we are sure it will prove helpful! Contact us for further info and to book in advance. Last, but not least, we are fortunate to have Australian Hearing coming to the Centre on Friday 27th April (straight after our special Anzac Day lunch) and again on Wednesday 16th May from 1.30pm3pm. Not only can you get a FREE hearing check, which only takes a few minutes, Australian Hearing are also offering FREE on the spot, minor repairs for implants. Call now to book your space. If you need help with anything, if you know people that need support, or if you simply want to get more involved in the Games 2 call us or Support community or with one of our programs, please come to the centre in person. We are here to help. Your team at Mosman Seniors Centre.

care programs The Australian Government’s My Aged Care (MAC) service is the main entry point for subsidised services for those Australian citizens over 65 years of age looking for assistance. Assistance comes in two forms, either through the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) or through a Home Care Package (HCP). At Mosman Council we provide 4 services through the CHSP program: 1. Home delivered meals and social meals through our community restaurant; 2. Community Transport (individual and group); 3. Social Support Services through activities and volunteer programs; and 4. Respite care for older adults with memory loss with our Saturday Social Club.

As our client it is important that you are given ongoing opportunities to inform us of your changing care needs. This comes in the form of a Care Plan review every 12 months. That way, if there is a need for a change of services, be it an increase in services due to poor health, or a decrease in services after recovering from an injury, we can tailor your personalised Care Plan accordingly and adjust the services you need. Reviewing your Care Plan means that you tell us how we Support can support you in the best way possible, keeping you at home and living an independent, healthy and happy life. If you have been receiving services for the past 12 months, a staff member from our friendly Care Program Team will be contacting you to schedule a convenient time for reassessment. We can meet you in your home or at the centre. Alternatively please contact us on 9978 4119 to make an appointment.

Sally Severino

Care Programs Coordinator Hello! I’ve recently joined Council as the Care Programs Coordinator. I’ve been a local Mosman resident for 15 years and love living here because of its natural beauty and also because it’s such a closeknit community. I believe I have the best job in the world because I have the loveliest clients! I have a degree in psychology from Macquarie University and I am particularly interested in the importance of social connection and the quality of human relationships versus the quantity – who needs 300 ‘likes’ on Facebook (sorry Mr. Zuckerberg). I am in the Centre most days so please come up and say ‘Hi’. I would love to talk to you about some of the programs and activities we have planned for this Autumn. You can contact me on 9978 4119 or email community.care@mosman. nsw.gov.au.

carers program Over the past 14 years many Carers have attended the Mosman Carers Group. The idea of the group is to provide weekly support, information and interaction with other Carers. The group is informal, relaxed and friendly and there is no pressure to attend. Some Carers come weekly and some less often. A full list of guest speakers can be sent to you, or you can access it on Councils’ website whatever is easier for you. Our guest speakers range from Dementia NSW (previously Alzheimers NSW) talking about ‘Effective Communication’ to a range of other speakers covering topics such as Continence, Medications, Advanced Care Directives and Plans, Loss and Grief, Art Therapy, Understanding and Supporting a Person with Dementia, and Compassion Fatigue. We have regular morning teas and, every few months, take a full day bus trip together. The group is welcoming and relaxed. We meet every Wednesday morning from 10am until 12 noon in the Harnett Room at Mosman Council. There is no charge. If you are caring for a relative, friend or neighbour who has an illness, dementia or a disability, please come along. We’re sure you will get a lot out of these sessions. We also have an evening forum coming up on Wednesday 6 June from 6pm-7.30pm on ‘Understanding and supporting a person with memory loss and Dementia’ run in partnership with CCNB (Community Care Northern Beaches) hosted here at the Seniors Centre - so save the date. If you would like to discuss the Carers Program further please don’t hesitate to contact Liz Nagel, on 9978 4089 on Tuesdays and Wednesday.

community Transport Although this phrase is at a risk of becoming a fad because of the countless times it has been used lately, we would still affirm that there have never been more exciting times here at Mosman Community Transport! Our Wednesday and Saturday excursions have never been more sought after; our Seniors Walking Group has done more steps than we could ever imagine when we first started this service almost an year and a half ago; Transport for NSW has finally given us the go ahead for Centralised Trip Allocation and a Booking System popularly known in the industry as CTABS and last but not least, we have had a new addition to our team in January when John Carroll, our diligent colleague, was appointed as permanent driver. We have some exciting plans for the next quarter. For the first time ever, and in keeping with our constant endeavour to offer value added services, we are inviting expressions of interest for group transport to visit the ever popular Vivid Sydney Festival. We are also planning a trip to the often overlooked Cockatoo Island to visit the Biennale which, after all, occurs only once every two years. So don’t ponder too long before you call our number to book your place! On the technical side of service delivery, soon you will see drivers go super-tech with tablets. You will also start receiving automated phone calls reminding you of your next day’s transport booking. This all is part of CTABS scheduled to be functioning at Mosman Community Transport in the last week of May. This technology is being introduced to assist TfNSW contracted organisations become more efficient and to stay relevant and competent in a changing environment. CTABS strictly addresses data protection, security of communications and storage of data and fully complies with TfNSW standards and legislative requirements. So as the saying goes, Winter is Coming! And this one will be full of warmth and happy beginnings. For more information contact Nitesh Gurbani, Community Transport Coordinator on 9978 4120.

social activities At the Centre we are dedicated to making the most of the space, facilities and the time we have, so please be mindful of small changes in the calendar. We are always trying to accommodate the greatest number of people and we are conscious that changing times can be difficult for some participants. We appreciate your help and support in making the Seniors Centre accessible for all. Here are some of the changes to keep in mind for term 2: The Tai Chi times are slightly changing. Level 1 Tai Chi will be between 9.00am-10.00am and Beginners Tai Chi between 10.15am-11.15 am. Tai Chi will be followed by our new Dance For Parkinson’s Class (call us for bookings and details). Lunchtime Movies are back on the 2nd Thursday of the month from 12.002.30pm. The new format has been working well with the $8 price including a lunch pack. Finally, we are delighted to welcome the Periodic Play reading group on the 1st and 3rd Mondays at 1.00pm. This group is meeting again at the Seniors Centre after a few years in the Library. These changes are all reflected on the new calendar and diary of events for the next three months.
