autumn NEWS Welcome back to your Active Healthy Engaged Newsletter for April, May and June 2019! The beginning of the year has been wonderfully busy with new programs running, continuous delivery of services and of course, our popular 2019 Seniors Festival. Thank you to everyone who supported Council and attended events during these two weeks of celebration. Over 500 people took part in the 15 events offered by Council! The Mayoral lunch and the cocktail party were both a resounding success and we learnt a lot from our inaugural Carnival day where we had good fun (and great coffee) despite very average weather. What’s new at the centre? We’ve started an amazing dance program called Let’s Dance - with Ros Tinker. Let’s Dance runs on Thursday mornings in term 2. Ros is also running a new Book Discussion Group on Friday afternoon in term 2. On 2 May, we have a FREE Tech forum focusing on Cyber security. We are also running the Be Connected computer program. Finally, we have a talk at our community restaurant from Holdsworth HomeShare on 17 May. You can find more details on all these events inside. If you would like any information on our programs, activities or care services, please pop in to the centre, call us on 9978 4128 or email us at community.care@mosman.nsw.gov.au.

purpose beyond self in older adults Here at Mosman Council Community Care we believe that older adults are one of society’s most undervalued resources. There is a need for purpose and connection at every stage of life. We all want something meaningful to do, something to look forward to and to be connected. We believe that our society needs new roles for older people to do what they do best, use their experience, passion and knowledge to mentor and guide the next generation as well as their own. If you are passionate about a subject and have experience in teaching, we would love to hear from you! Our Volunteers Coordinator, Jannat Ferdous, can assist you in starting something in your local community. Contact the Volunteers Office on 9978 4126 or email volunteer@mosman.nsw.gov.au. We want to see your ideas come to life.

“A society grows great when old people plant trees under whose shade they will never sit.” — Traditional Greek Proverb We are proud to introduce Ros Tinker, pictured here. Ros is a third generation ‘Mosmanite’ and skilled volunteer who will be facilitating two new programs here at the Seniors Centre. Ros has spent the last 55 years teaching high school and tertiary students and, more recently, students at Mosman Community College. She has taught a variety of subjects over the years in the health, communication and behavioural science fields. Ros has always loved to sing and dance and discuss the big questions of life. So it becomes her passion and pleasure now as a volunteer to facilitate healthy and fun activities with other folks her age. Join Ros’ Let’s Dance class on Thursday morning or her Book Discussion Group on Friday afternoon from the first week in May. We recommend you register early as numbers are strictly limited. Call today on 9978 4128 for registration and bookings.

your wellbeing

Remaining Healthy and Active as we Age! A “Supercentenarian” is a person who lives significantly past 100 years of age, typically past 110. Madame Jeanne Louise Calment (pictured below) was born in Arles, France in 1875, the same year Emperor Kwang-Su assumed the Chinese throne and the Kiowa Native American Indian tribe finally surrendered to the United States. Mme Calment lived to age 122 and remained physically active and mentally sharp right until the end. At age 85 she took up fencing, rode a bike until she was 100, lived alone until 1985 (when she was 110) and smoked two cigarettes a day. She enjoyed a glass of port wine with her evening meal and ate one kilogram of dark chocolate every week. She outlived her husband, her daughter, her grandson AND her solicitor! The nurses in the home where she last lived say that she walked faster than anyone else there, despite being at least 30 years older. Mosman Council recently invited Professor Sue Kurrle of the University of Sydney to speak about what the latest research is telling us about dementia. Professor Kurrle introduced the audience to Mme Calment’s life story to highlight the importance of exercise and an active lifestyle as preventative measures against dementia. Recent studies indicate that some simple lifestyle changes can help reduce the likelihood or delay the onset of dementia: • Do aerobic exercise for 30 minutes, five times a week. Think of it as flushing out your brain with wonderful oxygenated blood.

4

• Do resistance training 2-3 times a week. Start by doing 10 hand weight curls every time you make a cup of tea. Professor Kurrle also recommended seated-to-standing exercises. See how many you can do in 30 seconds and try and increase the number every month as you improve. • Do mental exercises - Continue to learn and be curious throughout life. Never stop! Try complex mental activities such as learning new languages, musical instruments, chess, computer games and keeping up your social contact. • Get good sleep - Not too little, not too much. Eight hours a night is just right. • Eat the “Mediterranean Diet”, high in poly-unsaturated fats and green leafy vegetables. • Get your hearing checked and if you need an aid, use it. Although still not fully understood, research has indicated that there’s a link between poor hearing and dementia. • Menopausal women should talk to their GP about hormone replacement therapy, as oestrogen improves memory function. If you would like a copy of Professor Kurrle’s presentation please send an email to community.care@mosman.nsw.gov.au. At the Mosman Seniors Centre we have several activities that can help keep your mind active, healthy and engaged, including: • Exercise classes. Try Zumba on a Friday morning to get your heart pumping, Gentle Exercises on Thursday, dance classes on Tuesdays, Thursday or Fridays and a walking group with Karen twice a month. See page 19 for our full calendar of activities. • Engage your brain by coming along to a University of the Third Age (U3A) lecture session on Wednesdays at the Seniors Centre, the Discussion Group on a Thursday, ‘Be Connected’ Computer training, Chess, Scrabble or Mahjong. • Hearing Australia visits the Centre once a quarter so book in to get your hearing aid tested for FREE. Our next Hearing Test dates are 26 March and 2 July from 1.30pm onwards. Call 9978 4128 to book your test.

older adultS: future research trials Macquarie University invites you to register to be a part of their research database for older adults interested in being a part of future research trials. As part of this database, you will receive information about research participation opportunities being conducted at the Macquarie University Centre for Emotional Health which aims at understanding mental health in adults aged over 60. People at our Care CafĂŠ Sketch Class have been getting creative thanks to our Art program that was introduced early 2018. We hope to hold an exhibition sometime in 2019. When: Monday 1.30pm - 4.00pm If you would like more information on our Art Classes, please call 9978 4119.

For older adults who enjoy the outdoors we have the Low Impact Walking Group led by our Community Care Support Worker, Karen. Cr Corrigan stressed how important the role of a carer is and congratulated those present for all they do for their loved ones, she said Council fully appreciated how hard a task it can be and was pleased to be able to provide support and information in the form of a weekly support group. The group has helped many people over the past 15 years and Cr Corrigan said Council looked forward to continuing this support, the regular guest speakers are so beneficial to those attending the sessions and the mutual support Carers give to one another is invaluable. If you are caring for a friend or family member and would like to attend the group, please ring Liz Nagel on 9978 4089, you would be very welcome to join this special and supportive
