ACTIVE, HEALTHY & ENGAGED

Spring NEWS Welcome back to your Active, Healthy and Engaged Newsletter for October, November, December 2019! Spring has sprung and the blossoms are out again. Why not take advantage of the beautiful weather to try something new? We’ve made a few changes to our timetable of activities so please take a moment to check the schedule at the end of this newsletter. The ever popular Wednesday Table Tennis group has grown so big that in early September we started a new group on Friday afternoons from 2:30pm-4:30pm (after the restaurant). This group is for people who haven’t had a chance to play on Wednesdays. If you are interested in playing, please give us a call. The Periodic Play Reading group has also changed time. They are now starting at 1.30pm (not 1.00pm) on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month in the Volunteers Lounge. Sadly, we’ve had to put our amazing Let’s Dance Program on hold for the time being. We do apologise and are hoping to have the group up and running again in early 2020. In the meantime, we have plenty of activities and outings planned over spring including lunches, a Spring Dance, bus trips, exercise classes and much more in the lead up to Christmas. We’ll also be releasing our program of events for the 2020 Mosman Seniors Festival soon so stay tuned. For more information on any of our events or programs please pop in to the Centre, give us a call on 9978 4128 or email us at community.care@mosman.nsw.gov.au.

caring for your mental health October is Mental Health Awareness Month. This year the theme is Share the Journey. Sharing the journey is all about ways we can connect with others, both for our own health and wellbeing, and their’s.

Sharing the journey can mean many things: • Reaching out to people who might be withdrawing from others • Working with someone to find and access services or support • Asking for help with day-to-day things when you need it • Popping into Mosman Seniors Centre and chatting with other local residents • Getting involved in group activities, like exercise classes, walking groups, Tai Chi, Discussion Groups and day trips to new places. Please speak to staff at the Centre if you are interested in joining one of our many activities. See page 19 for our schedule. “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members” - Coretta Scott King We have a number of regular, fun programs and events designed to keep you active, healthy and engaged. A great place to start would be joining our fortnightly Walking Group. Suitable for moderate levels of fitness, this enthusiastic group visits a wide range of breathtaking locations all across our harbour city. All you need is a pair of good walking shoes and a positive attitude. See page 14 for details. If you find yourself lacking the motivation to get out or feel a bit lonely, you might like to be a part of our Meal Mates program. Every week, for a 6 week period, a Meal Mates volunteer will pick you up and drive you to the Centre for a three-course lunch at a group table where you can meet and connect with other locals. After lunch you will be driven back home again. If you are interested in this program for yourself or someone you know, or if you would like any further information on how we can support you not just during October for mental health month but all through the year, please call the Care Team on 9978 4119. “I particularly enjoy the excellent speakers you chose. They were mindful of their audience’s needs and gave sage advice on keeping the carer healthy. Thank you for making my life so much more ordered and bearable. Carers Group a source of great support It’s hard to believe it is already September and Christmas isn’t far away! During October Mosman Carers Group will be celebrating Carers Week, so to acknowledge the wonderful job carers do there will be a special morning tea at Café Jam in Bridgepoint as well as a full day bus trip with lunch at the Pasedena Hotel at Church Point. The group will also be celebrating Christmas with a special Carers Christmas lunch on Wednesday 11th December at the Mosman Hotel. If you are a carer but not part of the group and would like to join us for any of these events, please give me a call on the number listed below and we can have a chat. The group has helped many people over the past 15 years. The regular guest speakers are so beneficial to those attending the sessions and the mutual support carers give to one another is invaluable. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all carers a wonderful Christmas and a healthy and Happy New Year. If you are caring for a friend or family member and would like to attend the group, please contact Carers Program Coordinator, Liz Nagel on 9978 4089.
