Meal Mates aims to connect people who have never been to the Centre before with other local residents and volunteers. Every week, for a 6 week period, a volunteer will pick you up and drive you to the Centre for a three-course lunch at a group table where you can meet and connect with other locals. After lunch, the volunteer will drive you home. Please call 9978 4119 for more information.

the secret to pauline’s success Pauline is 81 years of age and experiences short-term memory loss. Despite this, every week she catches public transport to her local Community Centre and has lunch with her regular table of friends. She also exercises regularly, goes to the library once a week and attends U3A (University of the Third Age) lectures. Pauline’s shortterm memory loss makes it difficult to form new memories, but her long-term and procedural memories work well. So what is the secret to Pauline’s success? It’s her routine. Pauline wakes up and knows what’s in store for her. Her whiteboard in the kitchen tells her what’s on. Every day starts in the same way - with a walk to the newsagency to buy a paper to read over breakfast. Pauline’s routine means that her days are anchored in activities. She knows where she is going, who she’s seeing and what she will be doing. Pauline enjoys her independence and not having to rely on family to look after her. The social aspects of her daily routine promote positive wellbeing, and the regular structure of Pauline’s days means that there are few or no unexpected changes to her schedule (which can create anxiety and stress in someone with shortterm memory loss). At the Mosman Seniors Centre we pride ourselves on creating a genuine community, where everyone knows your name and you’re valued and respected. We encourage you to get involved in activities and form social groups. In the month of June we kicked off Meal Mates, a new six week program run by volunteers. Meal Mates aims to connect people who have never been to the Centre before with other local residents and volunteers. Every week a volunteer will pick you up and drive you to the Centre for a three course lunch at a group table, where you can meet and connect with other locals. After lunch, the volunteer will return you home. At the end of the six weeks we hope you will have adopted a new home-away-from-home with familiar faces and a comfortable environment - a place that you will feel comfortable coming to on your own to meet your friends. Like Pauline, we hope that you will make Meal Mates part of your routine. If you are interested in this program for yourself or someone you know please call the Care Team on 9978 4119.

carers program caring for carers progam Every Wednesday 10am - 12pm

“I was at the end of my endurance. I am a long term carer of 30 years with the last five being 24 hours a day/7 days a week. The availability of support on the phone and the weekly meetings have saved me completely. When I am down, I can think of the group from the meetings and get a little laugh out of our talks. That keeps me going. It has helped to stop me feeling so isolated and alone. The friendship of the other members is so rewarding as we all understand what each of us are going through.” - Carers Group participant feedback.

Harnett Room, Mosman Council

You will find a list of guest speakers on Councils website: www.mosman.nsw.gov.au/community/carers. In May during National Volunteer Week, Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan hosted an afternoon tea for Council’s volunteers to thank them for their invaluable help to the community. At the event, the Mayor recognised those who have donated their time to support the community over many years. She also highlighted the changes the Volunteers Office has gone through in the past 12 months in order to provide better support to volunteers. New volunteers can now attend four introductory workshops and will recieve a new Volunteer handbook as well as a Comprehensive Volunteer Manual. Our volunteers enjoyed their time with Mayor Carolyn Corrigan at the afternoon tea. One of our lovely volunteers wrote: “Last Wednesday’s annual Volunteer Afternoon Tea at the Gunners Barracks was absolutely beautiful. The venue was perfect and the Mayor’s lovely words of community and appreciation were wonderful. Thank you to the team for all you did to make the volunteers feel thanked. Volunteering is truly a gift to all those involved and I am thankful that I am involved.”

Meet olga - volunteering since 1999!

Community Links volunteer Olga Munoz (pictured left) with Mosman Council Mayor Carolyn Corrigan.

On a visit to the Mosman Library many years ago, Olga saw an ad requesting volunteers to take books to people living in a retirement facility. That was the beginning of her volunteering journey. She enjoyed it so much that she also started volunteering to visit residents in nursing homes. Her personal gain from this role was huge and these relationships lasted for many years. Olga’s next role was as part of a team rather than as an individual one, when she joined the Saturday Social Club, which she enjoyed immensely. Since last year, she has been part of the Saturday respite program which is a great team of volunteers and Council staff. Olga feels that being a volunteer has given her a better understanding of life. If you are interested in finding out more about volunteering opportunities, please contact the Volunteers Office on 9978 4126 or by email at volunteer@mosman.nsw.gov.au.
