Mosman dances on…

There were no plies or pirouettes but the spirit of Mosman ballet teacher the late Mavis Sykes was alive when former students, family and friends gathered to celebrate the life of ‘Miss Sykes’ on Monday 18 August. The occasion was the launch of her story on our Mosman Faces website, a site that brings Mosman’s stories to life on screen through filmed interviews, images and music. Memories created the film and memories will continue to keep the Mavis Sykes story alive, a story that spanned 70 years of teaching children ballet, examining and choreographing Mosman Musical Society productions. So share your memories or just be entertained as Mosman dances on with the Mavis Sykes story on mosmanfaces.net

Family History month at Mosman Library

During this year's Family History month the Library mounted a display of some of the most widely used genealogy resources available in the Mosman Local Studies Collection. These include cemetery records, births death and marriage records, probate indexes and shipping lists as well as guides on how to go about tracing your family's history in different countries and over many centuries. This time it seems the most popular resources which aroused the greatest curiosity were the online databases Ancestry.com and

The Balmoral Beach Club Celebrates its Centenary

This exhibition recently held in the Mosman Room was of great interest to both club members and the general public with a continual flow of people coming in to take a peak. The club was started in 1914 by a group of young men known as The Smugglers who met regularly at the weekend Euroka Camp. On view were items from the club's large archival collection dating from early days including records of the first meeting, minute books, early video footage, trophies and hundreds of photographs. However, the most popular items were the club's monthly newsletter which would chronicle the club events and relay stories of the comings and goings of club members. Many of those who visited the exhibition would exclaim with joy when they read of their father's record swim or the barbeque where they met their husband!

Mosman High School Visits Mosman Library

In the month of June, 210 Year 7 students from Mosman High School walked through the doors of Mosman Library in a program organised between the Promotions and Youth Services Librarian and the Mosman High School Librarian, Carolyn Davey. This outreach program aimed to engage the students with the Mosman community, promote the Library for Young Adults, raise awareness of our services and resources for teenagers as well as develop information literacy skills. The library visit focused on areas of relevance to teenage borrowers. The students were taken through the catalogue and shown how to search for items. Relevant areas of the Library website that was looked at included, the teen page, Mosman events page and the wired4teens blog. We took a tour of the non-fiction section of the Library on our way down to the Young Adult section of the Library. The student’s newly acquired skills were tested in "The Amazing Library Race". In this activity the teams had to race around the Library collecting clues, each clue lead to a book, there were 7 to find and the first team to arrive at the book would also find a treat waiting for them. The students were very engaged in the activity and had to utilise their newly acquired skills using the Library catalogue and the internet. The students thoroughly enjoyed their visit vowing that they would be back and as there was an element of fun attached to their experience they left with a positive image of the Library as a fun and friendly place with cool books.
