Doing our bit: Mosman and the Anzac Centenary

Cayley & Son Book Launch

The long‐awaited publication of a book on two of Australia’s most renowned bird artists Neville Henry Cayley and his son, Neville William Cayley was launched at Mosman Library on Monday 8 April 2013 to an enthusiastic crowd of art and bird lovers. Presented in a fun way as an interview with the author, Penny Olsen and Cayley collector, David Crane we were given an evocative peak into the lives of these two men. We also opened the exhibition of Cayley paintings which fascinated and intrigued the audience. And as I wandered around the exhibition I heard stories of people growing up with much loved Cayley birds on the wall, of Cayley art rolled up in the bottom of wardrobes, of Cayley prints purchased that turned out to be originals and originals that turned out to be prints! To celebrate the book the Library gathered many works by Cayley & Son borrowed from private collections. There are even works by Cayley Snr’s copyist Tom Flower and we invite you to pick the differences! Also on view was an amazing collection of ephemeral material including postcards, playing cards, Christmas cards and booklets such as those commissioned by the petroleum company Shell in the 1930s. These art works had not been on public exhibition before and will never be exhibited together again. So it was a rare opportunity to see these original paintings.

On the eve of Anzac Day, the Mayor launched mosman1914‐1918.net, an online resource to collect and display information about the wartime experiences of local service people. “By 2015,” said Councillor Peter Abelson, “the website will be a rich resource not only for the Mosman community during the centenary of Anzac, but a keeper of stories and traditions for those who follow us in the years to come.” 'Doing our bit, Mosman 1914‐1918' was funded by a State Library of NSW grant, and led by historian Dr Tim Sherratt. The website takes an innovative approach to linking names, official sources and community‐ contributed materials and memories. Importantly, the relationships defined in the database can be connected with information held by national institutions like the Australian War Memorial. Dr Sherratt couldn’t be at the launch as he was in Malmö, Sweden, delivering the keynote address at a European conference on cultural heritage. He joins the National Library of Australia this month as the manager of Trove. The future of Mosman’s project is in good hands. The website lists names sourced from local memorials and honour rolls. Mosman Library needs your help to identify the men and women named, and link them to official records. Register on the website and do your bit. The Library will be holding workshops over the next few months for those who would like some assistance. http://mosman1914‐1918.net

NEWS & VIEWS Triva Night

Library and Information Week 2013 Each year during May Australian libraries celebrate the unique role they play within the community. It is a week where we showcase the services and facilities we have to offer by engaging the community in interesting and fun activities.

Banned Books Display

During Library and Information week we held a display of banned books in the Library to raise awareness of the censorship issue in relation to the theme “Share Your Story’. There are literally thousands of banned books and we only had the space to include a handful in the display. Here are some of the more surprising banned books. Black Beauty by Anna Sewell – banned in South Africa because of word ‘black’ was in the title. The Lorax by Dr Seuss – banned in Laytonville, California for portraying the foresting industry in a negative way. Tarzan by Edgar Rice Burroughs – banned in some schools in America because Tarzan and Jane were not married before they cohabitated. The Where's Waldo? series by Martin Hanford – banned in some schools in America because a topless woman in the crowd, caused offence. The Diary of Ann Frank by Otto Frank – challenged on numerous occasions for its sexually explicit content but in this case the Alabama textbook committee had it banned it for being “a real downer”!

‘Share Your Story’ competition The lucky winner of our ‘Share Your Story’ competition Maureen Vinalon was thrilled to be taking home a Sony e‐reader and will now be downloading e‐books at her leisure. Here’s how libraries have changed her life…. As a mother of two, I love this place. Resources on parenting are abundant. The fiction books, CD/DVDs, magazines are great for my "me time". The numerous activities for children are amazing too. My children have gained invaluable access to literary resources. I'm raising 2 happy and eager little readers. Maureen Vinalon We like stories of how libraries have changed people’s lives so we have published two other stories. My English was too basic when I came to Australia. Over a decade later, when people say my vocabulary seems quite rich for a second language speaker, I know how much I owe to the libraries that gave me access to reading all the books my pocket could not afford. Isabel Garcia A self‐published author, libraries allowed me to share my story with the public through author events. News spread and my memoir‐ Under A Starless Sky‐ was published in 2008 with Hachette. I continue to write and be published. But I will never forget how I got my start. Banafsheh Serov
