Happy Snaps of Mosman families August was the annual Family History month. Mosman Library usually participates by showing our wide and varied range of family history research resources held in the Mosman Local Studies collection. This year it was time for a change and we set ourselves the challenge of finding photographs of local families. Photographs are an important part of family history research providing a much needed visual record for the family historian. Ancestors all too often only appear as names listed in official records such as census and immigration documents, probate indexes, electoral rolls or as names on certificates purchased from the registries of births deaths and marriages, so finding a photograph can be a bonus. Family photographs have been donated, over many years, to the Local Studies collection. There are many benefits to these kind donations including the pleasure of sharing personal family stories and memorabilia; adding to the overall picture of our local community and ensuring that records are never lost or accidentally thrown out. The exhibition was a success and we had some great images – one set of family snaps dated from 1908 up to 1962. However, the favourite of many was the photograph of a young Percy Lever, with three of his five sisters, on board the ship 'Lady Elizabeth' taken in 1900. The children had been born 'under sail' and brought up on board ship until they turned 12, as their father was a mariner. Percy then went to an English boarding school and his sisters to a French convent in Belgium. At the age of 18 Percy's mother was widowed and the family came to live in Mosman as her sister was living in Boyle Street. At 21 Percy enlisted and was sent to Egypt, Gallipoli and back to Egypt. He contracted enteric fever was hospitalised in England and returned to France where he was killed in 1916. An added dimension to the exhibition was that we also provided links from the selected photographs to unique Mosman sources of information, such as oral history interviews found online at our
