Remembering Miss Sykes – A day of Celebration

MONDAY MATTERS AT MOSMAN LIBRARY

Ralph Penglis conducting one of his popular "Cryptic Crossword" workshops.

Mosmanfaces.net is a Mosman Library website that tells stories by and about people who have shaped the Mosman Community. Our next ‘Face’ to be added is Mosman ballet teacher Mavis Sykes (1909-1997). As ‘Miss Sykes’ is no longer with us we are relying on memories and memorabilia from former students, friends and colleagues to tell her story. And on Saturday 29 March that is what happened…From 10am the celebration of Mavis Sykes life began! Mavis Sykes fans poured into the Library and shared their memories, on film and through their costumes, tutus, toe shoes, pointe shoes, medals, certificates, concert programmes and photographs. Clifton Haynes describes performing with Mavis Sykes in the 1948 production of Desert King, Hilarie Lindsay remembers living next door to the Sykes family in the 1930’s, student Shane Carroll talks about Mavis Sykes’ influence as she forged a dance career at home and on the international stage, and Judy and David Plomley reminisce about a lifelong friend that taught their three daughters ballet from a very early age. These stories are just a taste and just the beginning. Stay tuned as we merge together your memories, your photos and your memorabilia with an audio recording by Ian Campbell (Mavis Sykes’ son) to honour and celebrate the remarkable life of Mavis Sykes on Mosman Faces.

Monday mornings are always busy at the Library, but especially so on the first Monday of the month when "Monday Matters" takes place. "Monday Matters" is an informal talk or workshop on a different topic each month. Speakers are invited to talk on their area of expertise, and as audience numbers are limited, the sessions are quite informal, with plenty of time for questions and discussion. "How to Solve Cryptic Crosswords" was one of the more popular events, in fact we have decided to hold another workshop later this year. Also coming up are the Mosman Home Gardeners' Society and Live Poets from Don Bank. Opera buffs are in for a treat too! We also have authors talking about their books and the writing process. For example in June, Margaret Rose Stringer will talk about her memoir "And then Like My Dreams". Margaret Rose is the widow of Charles 'Chic' Stringer, who was one of the Australian Film industry's most respected stillsmen of the 70s and 80s. Wherever your interests lie, you're sure to find a "Monday Matters" that you won't want to miss. The sessions are free and must be booked in advance, either in person, by phone or online. Keep your eye on the monthly "What's On" and the website for upcoming events.

NSW PUBLIC LIBRARIES FUNDING

Fair Deal for NSW Public Libraries Mosman Council is supporting the joint funding campaign by the NSW Public Libraries Associations. This campaign aims to obtain better funding for public libraries from the State Government. NSW State Governments have short changed public libraries for years. Funding for public libraries is now at a crisis point and if the State Government doesn’t contribute more, public library services in NSW will be at risk. Here are some facts: Library Funding was once split 50:50 between State and Local Government The State Government currently only puts in 7 cents out of every dollar and local councils now have to fund 93% of the cost of providing public libraries. The NSW Government’s contribution is the lowest of all states in Australia. In the run up to the last state election, the current State Government said they would increase ongoing funding for public libraries. To date they have not. Successive NSW Governments have contributed less and less in real terms every year Families, seniors, students, children, job seekers and other library users will be hit if the State Government doesn’t put in its fair share. For more information or to become involved please visit: http://nswpla.org.au/nswpla-communityfunding.html.

ROVING LIBRARIANS

You may have noticed that there are more librarians roving about the Library offering to help you find that great read, use the catalogue or locate the information on a particular subject. Please feel free to approach any librarian you see wandering around the Library, we are only too happy to help you. Of course you can still ask at the Customer Service Desk if no-one is roving in the vicinity.

Technology Tuesday Drop In Sessions

Last month we introduced our new Technology Tuesday Drop In Sessions. Held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, the sessions are an informal way for you to get help with your smart phone, tablet or laptop. The librarians who help out at the sessions have a wealth of expertise and knowledge in all aspects of technology so if you can't figure something out - they will help you. Sessions run from 10.30am - 12.30pm. No need to book, just 'dropin'.

Write@ Mosman Library

READ, REVIEW & WIN The popular Reading Incentive Program for adults, Read, Review & Win, is back again. What better time to curl up with a good book than a cold July night. And it's so easy to go into the draw to win one of many fabulous prizes, which will be awarded weekly.

Aleesah Dalison conducting Write@ Mosman Library

In February the new Children’s Library Program, Write @ Mosman Library commenced. The program is designed for school children aged 8-12 years old and is held on the first Wednesday of the month during the school term. The first three workshops conducted by Aleesah Dalison, author of the Unicorn Riders Series, were very popular with over thirty children attending. “We were very excited about introducing this new program for children at Mosman Library. We hope to improve their writing skills and it was perfect timing in the lead up to this year’s Mosman Youth Awards in Literature. Hopefully it gave the children who attended more confidence in their writing skills and encouraged them to enter the competition this year” said Simin Reyhanian, Children’s Librarian.

You can submit your review in one of two ways. Simply fill in a review card from the desk, or alternatively post your review on the catalogue. To do this look up the title on the catalogue, then click on "write a review". Log in with your library card, and write a few lines with your recommendation. Everyone who enters has a great chance of winning. All reviews also go into the draw for the major prize at the end of the Program. During the summer program the lucky winner was presented with a hamper laden with gifts. By writing a review you will also be helping others to find a great read. READ, REVIEW & WIN runs

The program continued in May with a workshop on illustration for stories. This backed up the writing workshops for those budding illustrators of the future. Write @ Mosman Library will continue throughout the year, focusing on writing skills within different genres and a few author visits!! Stay tuned for more details! The Write @ Mosman Library Workshops are free but bookings are essential at www.mosman.nsw.gov.au. Alexandra Mencinskyj winner of the Summer 2014 RRW
