From the Editor’s Desk Welcome back to the Over55s Newsletter for this April May June 2014 edition. Let’s start by thanking everyone who got involved during Seniors’ Week in March; the Centre was packed with activities, and people came from all over Sydney to enjoy some of the events we put together. Once again, the cocktail party was really well attended, we had the joy to see many of you stand up and dance, and we are very grateful for the great music from Greg Poppleton and his band, the Bakelite Broadcasters. What a great afternoon it was! The free trial exercise classes were also well attended, and this is very good news for our exercise programs. The Healthy Eating and Healthy Ageing forum on Thursday had a cooking demonstration , and very interesting talks from Dieticians and food specialists which all in attendance enjoyed. Overall, Seniors’ Week was excellent, we are all also very grateful for our Mayor, Councillor Peter Abelson and Councillor Libby Moline to have joined us on the day. It was a busy week, and a successful one, and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves. Going into the Second Semester for 2014, keep in mind some of our activities might be changing and some need a boost in numbers. The Monday art class would love more of you wonderful creative people to attend. We are calling on all Mosman artists/would be artists and dabblers of all kinds to join us on Monday afternoons for a load of fun and a little learning. Brian has started a group for Chinese Mahjong; come and join him on Thursday mornings and learn this fascinating and ancient game of skill, strategy and chance. Please contact Olivier on 9978 4128 for any info on activities. In June – July, the Tax Help Program from the ATO will resume, please make sure you book your time if you need help from a specialized accountant. It is likely that the days for Tax Help will be Mondays and Fridays (to be confirmed); once again, call Olivier for booking or for any information. Finally, keep an eye on our diary of events; there are more outings, more Big Lunches and more events happening! Do not miss the Guringai Aboriginal theme lunch and make sure you keep warm in the coming months. So come and join us, we’d love to see you in one or many of our activities on offer, meet new people and have fun. Also keep in mind the services we provide; Meals on Wheels, Transport, Social Support, etc… See you soon at the Centre! 3
News from the Community Restaurant Welcome to the second trimester of the year in the Community Restaurant. We will be moving onto the Winter Menu shortly, so I ask for your patience as we try out a few different meals to see what we all like best!!! I'm quite looking forward to some yummy roast dinners and warm apple pies!!! Our first two Theme Lunches for the year were good fun and Seniors Week was great!! I know how you all loved the Cocktail Party!! Greg Poppleton and his band were fantastic and it was wonderful to see so many of you up on the dance floor! The small 'Charleston' exhibition given by our much loved Mrs Zara Grayspence nearly brought the house down!! Those of you who didn't dance were so encouraging to those who did and I know enjoyed it all as much as we (the staff) did!! Coming up this month we have our Anzac Day Lunch on Tuesday 29 April. This is unusual to have the Theme Lunch on a Tuesday, but the previous two Friday's are public holidays!! Good Friday and Anzac Day! Please book early for The Anzac Lunch as it will fill quickly! In May we are really branching out by having a Brazilian Lunch, a culture and food we've never done before!! This is on Friday 30 May. On June 27 (Friday) we will be celebrating the Guringai Festival, which is celebrated every year in Warringah Shire to remember and celebrate the original Aboriginal people who lived in this area. It is always a terrific lunch and I have some great dancers coming! Remember to book in for all of these lunches. Once again I have been in touch with Mosman High School and some of their students will be joining us for lunch. They will entertain us with music and various demonstrations or just chat to us about school and how different their schooling is to ours!! They also love hearing your stories and where you have all come from. Please help us by participating in this program. It is so worthwhile for both generations! Below are the dates Mosman High is coming; put them in your diary, so you remember to come!! Fri. 11th April Fri.5th September
Fri. 2nd May Fri.24th October
Fri.20th June Fri. 28th November
Fri.18th July
The sad, sad news I have to report is that our beautiful, funny, enthusiastic and kind volunteer, Pashma Gupta passed away very unexpectedly in January. 4
Vale Pashma Gupta On Tuesday 14 January after a very bad fall in December, our beautiful friend Mrs Pashma Gupta passed away quietly in North Shore Hospital surrounded by her family. This would have been Pashma's fifteenth year as a Volunteer in the Community Restaurant. She came to us very soon after moving with her husband, Bishamber, to live in Australia. Pashma loved her work in the Restaurant and was always full of ideas and suggestions to make it better. She had made very good friends among the other volunteers and amongst many of the clients. We all miss her greatly. On a personal level she had become a very good friend and confidant to me. She had taught me to cook many Indian dishes and took a great interest in my family. I am very sad about her passing. I have just been to India and Pashma had been very excited about this for me; giving me much advice about where to go, what to do and what to eat! I saw her on every corner in India... Thank you for your love and interest Pashma. You will always be a part of our Community Restaurant.

Mosman Carers Group Happy 10th Anniversary! Wednesday 12 February was a special occasion for Mosman Carers Group. To celebrate our 10th Anniversary we held a special morning tea attended by the Mayor of Mosman Cr Peter Abelson, Mosman Council General Manager, Veronica Lee and Director Community Development, Diane Lawrence as well as other staff members and most importantly of all, the Carers themselves! Current and former Carers mingled and chatted and all enjoyed the delicious cakes, sandwiches and fruit platter. The group, which meets every Wednesday morning in the Harnett Room at Mosman Council has been a wonderful source of support, friendship, referrals and information for Carers over the past 10 years. If you are caring for someone with an illness, ranging from Dementia/ Alzheimers disease, chronic illness, mental or physical disability, or if you know someone who is, please contact Liz Nagel on 9978 4089 or email l.nagel@mosman.nsw.gov.au for more information.
Have a laugh… The Old Days A grandpa was telling his young grandson what life was like when he was a boy. "In the winter we’d ice skate on our pond. In the summer we could swim in the pond, and pick berries in the woods. We’d swing on an old tire my dad hung from a tree on a rope. And we had a pony we rode all over the farm." The little boy was amazed, and sat silently for a minute. Finally he said, "Granddad, I wish I'd gotten to know you a lot sooner!" Biscuit Fun Mum, can I have an animal biscuit?” asked 3 year old Rob. “Sure Rob,” said his mum. “Open the box and take a few.” Forty five minutes later Rob’s mother walked into the kitchen. “Rob, why did you tip out all the animal biscuits, what are you looking for?” 8“It said on the box not to eat if the seal is broken.” Rob replied “I tipped them out so I could find the seals but I can’t find any!”

Community Support Mosman Council Saturday Social Group for Seniors
?
Did you know…...
Weekend community-run social activities for Seniors, on the Lower North Shore, are almost non-existent. A few years ago, Mosman Council undertook a community consultation which revealed that there was a need and desire for a Saturday group for Seniors. It has been observed that regular social interaction as well as physical exercise and cognitive stimulation helps us all, and Seniors in particular, maintain or improve our physical, emotional and cognitive ability. It also promotes self-esteem and helps reduce anxiety and depression. As a result, in November 2008, Mosman Council introduced its first Saturday Social group for Seniors. The benefits of such an initiative are twofold: to enable Lower North Shore residents to remain engaged in their local community while providing their carer with a break (for those with a carer). Here is recent feedback from a family member: “Our family is so lucky to be able to access this service and we are very grateful. One of the best things about it is that it is on a Saturday. A weekend when things for my mother are fairly quiet. The Saturday group helps to keep her focused otherwise the time would pass slowly for her. I have attended the last two Christmas parties and again this year. I marveled at the generosity of spirit of the staff in this department. Managers included! It was also good for me to meet other carers and share their ideas. Thank you for the opportunity, it was a special morning and it is so good for Mum as it helps her get into the spirit of the season”. Registration is currently open for new members to join Council’s Saturday Social Group for Seniors so please contact Chantal Kerr or Lyn Kelleher on 9978 4119 for further information. 10

Robert Wainwright — Sheila Robert Wainwright's latest book, Sheila is about an extraordinary woman unknown to most Australians. Vivacious, confident and striking, Sheila Chisholm met her first husband, Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, a first lieutenant and son of the 5th Earl of Rosslyn, when she went to Egypt during the Great War to nurse her brother. Arriving in London as a young married woman, the world was at her feet, and she enjoyed it immensely. Edward, Prince of Wales, called her 'a divine woman' and his brother, Bertie, the future George VI of England was especially close to her. She subsequently became Lady Milbanke and ended her days as Princess Dimitri of Russia.

Aboriginal Heritage Bushwalk Saturday 28 June 2014 10.00am – 1.00pm
Mosman has a rich Aboriginal heritage with over one hundred recorded sites in the area. Join us for a bushwalk lead by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, and hear the stories of how the indigenous people lived in harmony with nature, their rich food sources, the equipment they used, the links to the many different groups who once called Sydney Harbour their home and begin to understand the cultural significance of the archaeological materials still evident today.
