Newsletter now available on-line at www.mosman.nsw.gov.au
From the Editor's Desk Dear Readers, Welcome back to the Over 55s Newsletter from the Mosman Council Aged and Disability Services! As you may have noticed, the Newsletter now covers 3 months; this issue is for April, May and June 2012. This effectively means that we will only have 4 newsletters a year instead of 6, and we are hoping that this will help the distribution process and will be more informative for readers with more condensed information. This is why you will find out that the diary of events (at the end of the Newsletter) will run all the way to the first week of July, listing the different lunches, outings and movies. We are hoping that this new formula will contribute to a more comprehensive and effective newsletter for our seniors in the Mosman community and on the Lower North Shore. In this issue you will find all the important information that you need for Transport, meals on wheels, Social support, etc‌ as well as detailed programs of activities and outings‌ please, do not hesitate to call Olivier on 9978 4128 if you need further information. Seniors Week 2012 went really well, the cocktail party on Tuesday the 20th was an outstanding success, and the Health and Safety Forum on the Thursday was also well attended. We concluded the week with a Mayoral lunch on the Friday where the food was great and where Mosman Mayor Anne Connon said a few words to celebrate seniors as well as harmony day (orange theme). The entire ADS team would like to thank everyone involved in the different events, staff, volunteers and speakers for the Forum, and all the dancers who joined in during the cocktail party. Many thanks also to Jeffery for his help with the music and the dancing, his swift moves on the dance floor illuminated the afternoon, we never realised that there was so much talent in Mosman! Last but not least, we would like to extend our thanks to all clients who came to our events at the council and actively took part in Seniors Week. Finally, many thanks as well to Healthy lifestyle for accepting kindly to organise a free try-out session for the gentle exercise class, and to Tim for his presentation afterwards during the morning tea. Please keep an eye on our activities and remember that after the end of the financial year, the dedicated team of volunteers helping with the tax return will be back on board if you need assistance. For more information on the tax return program or for anything else, contact Olivier on 9978 4128. We wish you and your families a wonderful Easter break and are looking forward to the next edition in July.

NEWS FROM THE COMMUNITY RESTAURANT! As always, welcome to Community Restaurant patrons, both current and new!! The weather is getting cooler (not that it ever got particularly hot!) and soon we will switch to the Winter Menu… more roasts and warming comfort food!! Our celebration of Chinese New Year was lots of fun, with Kay Tong and the ladies from Chatswood Community Centre entertaining us with their elegant cultural dancing. They are such a lovely group and we are so lucky they are happy to come and join us each year! Seniors Week was fabulous, with the Tea Dance/Cocktails a great success! Wonderful to see so many of you on the dance floor showing us (not so) ‘young ‘uns’ how it should be done!! The Mayors Lunch, as well, was a great success. Many thanks to Mayor Ann Connon for joining us and handing out the lovely flowers. We always welcome her to our midst. As the Newsletter is now going to be once every three months I have a lot to remind you about!! Coming up on Friday 27th April we have the Anzac Lunch. Please remember to book in with Olivier as this is one of our best attended special lunches! On Friday 25th May, due to a special request by Cheryl we are having a Canadian Lunch! Cheryl will be deciding on the menu, and I’m sure it will involve pumpkin pie!! On Friday 29th June we will be celebrating the annual Guringai Festival, a celebration of all things Aboriginal and a tribute to the original land owners of our great country. It would be great if you could wear something red, black and yellow to signify our respect. On the second Tuesday in May, ie; Tuesday 8th May we are having another Friendship Lunch. This is a really important day to help spread the news about the Community Restaurant. I would like to encourage you to bring along your friends on this day! Anyone who has not been to the Restaurant before will not have to pay for lunch on that day. Of course we hope that they love it and then become a regular attendee!! If you are bringing friends, please let Olivier know, so we can organise the seating arrangements and have plenty of room at the tables so you can sit with your friends! I would really love your support on this special day. Keep coming and keep eating and keep up the friendship!! That’s what we’re all about! Love always from Mary the Kitchen Fairy!!

Community Support Can We Assist You?
As circumstances change in life, gradually you may experience some of the following: a lose of confidence; difficulty in going out, even down the road to the local shops, only to find this is a big effort and you come home exhausted; or you may find it difficult to get to activities you love doing, maybe going to the Art Gallery, your game of Bridge or exercise class. These changes can come about gradually or suddenly, after a hospitalisation, a fall in the street, the loss of family or good friends – any number of things. Suddenly you are staying home more, becoming more isolated. Look through this list below and see if you answer “YES” to any of these questions: √ √ √ √ √ √ √ √ √
Are you unable to drive or user public transport? Are you experiencing declining health and now feel you need help? Would you like ‘to get out and about’ more often but can no longer manage it? Would you enjoy being picked up and taken on bus trips and outings? Have you had a recent loss, such as the death of a loved one or friend? Do you feel unsafe in your own home or when you go out? Are you in a situation where you have no one to call in an emergency? Would you like more contact with people at times? Would you like to know about local services that can help?
If this is you or someone you know and the answer was “YES” – Can We Assist You? We are not trying to take away your independence, at times there can be that long-held belief that if I accept help that will be the ‘end of me’. Our goal is to keep you independent in your own home, with the offer of a little help, to take away some of the isolation that can come with age and also to reconnect you to your local community. We can assist you in looking at what might help, by talking through some of the issues and explore possibilities. Give us a call on 9978 4119 so you can discuss what would help you most – we can talk to you on the phone or you can make a time to meet with us in the office. We are also able to visit you in your home. Lyn Kelleher & Chantal Kerr 8
Mosman Carers Group Mosman Carers group began more than eight years ago in response to an identified need for a local support group. Service providers and Carers themselves were consulted and asked for input about how the group should be set up, and the outcome was a group that meets weekly, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere every Wednesday morning from 10am to 12 noon in the Harnett Rooms at Mosman Council. The group is an open one, those who attend care for family and friends with illnesses ranging from Dementia/ Alzheimers disease, terminal illness and mental and physical disabilities as well as mental health issues. There are weekly guest speakers and these important and informative sessions cover subjects such as Dementia/Alzheimers disease , grief and loss, legal issues, relaxation and meditation and many, many more. There are monthly support group/get-togethers when Carers come together to have chat over a cup of tea and there are regular full day bus outings. Carers say they find these outings a wonderful break and respite from their caring role. Feedback from the Carers has been very positive, they say they find the group extremely valuable, appreciating the information, guest speakers and referrals as well as the relaxed and friendly atmosphere (also the laughter which plays a big part in the meetings!) and wonderful friendships have formed. A vital part of the group is the friendship and support Carers give one another, they know only too well the highs and lows, frustrations and difficulties of being a Carer and are able to listen and offer advice and understanding. One Carer said “I would not have survived without the Carers group”. Another said “I value the group so much, I was never able to open up about my feelings but now find I can speak freely about how I feel, it has been an amazing help.” The weekly meetings are not only valuable for the information and support Carers receive, they also act as respite, a short break or “time out” for Carers, the full day outings are also a well needed, often vital break for Carers. If you are caring for someone, or you know someone who is, please contact me on 99784089 for more information. Warm regards, Liz Nagel

Striped Anglerfish Female angler fish can eat a meal twice their size in one huge split-second gulp. That’s the equivalent to a human eating about 750 hamburgers. The current human record according to the International Federation of Competitive Eating (yes it exists!) is 11 in 10 minutes. Despite her portly appearance, when she goes for a bite, it’s just about the fastest motion in the ocean – she lunges at her food with an ’elastic’ mouth and body that allows her to swallow a fish much larger than herself. This region of Australia is one of the only places in the world where angler fish are found in shallow water, and Sydney is possibly the easiest place in the world to encounter one. What’s on at Mosman Art Gallery Gallery update and temporary closure The temporary closure of the Gallery has allowed the much needed maintenance works to be done and these works are well underway. The maintenance works will be followed by additional refurbishment works between April – June which will impact on some services on the Ground Floor.
EXHIBITIONS Safe from the city's haste: Mosman Vistas from 1838-1955 Wednesday 11 April – Sunday 13 May 2012 In the early 1900s, Henry Lawson wrote the poem Mosman’s Bay and captured the area’s unique aspects.
Dora Toovey, Building the new Spit Bridge c.1953
From the red-tiled roofs of comfort, And the gardens and lawns of taste; Safe from the city’s clamour, And safe from the city’s haste; From a vision of range and ocean, And a hint of the sea-cliffs grey, Look down from the heights of Mosman To the depths of Mosman’s Bay
This exhibition which takes its name from Lawson’s poem, presents works from the Mosman Art Gallery collection which have been acquired over many years through donations and bequests. Together, these paintings reveal the delight artists have taken in Mosman vistas over a hundred year period from 1838 to 1955.

What’s on at Mosman Library AUTHOR EVENING Monday, 16 April at 7pm. The Censor's Library: Nicole Moore at Mosman Library When Nicole Moore discovered the secret ‘censor’s library’ in the National Archives – 793 boxes prohibited from the 1920s to the 1980s – so began a journey that resulted in this, the first comprehensive examination of Australian book censorship. For much of the twentieth century, Australia banned more books and more serious books than most other English-speaking or Western countries, from the Kama Sutra through to Huxley’s Brave New World and Joyce’s Ulysses. Federal publications censorship was a largely secret affair and deliberately kept from the knowledge of the Australian public until the scandals and protests of late last century. Censorship continues to attract heated debate, from the Henson affair to the national internet feed. Combining rigorous scholarship with the narrative tension of a thriller, The Censor’s Library is a provocative account of this scandalous history. Nicole Moore is Associate Professor in English at the University of New South Wales. Bookings in advance essential. Book online or book and pay in the Library. Adults $10, pensioners and students $8 (passes must be shown). Enquiries 9978 4091

Have you been to see the remediation and restoration works at Balmoral, behind Balmoral Oval? The site is now well and truly settled and there have been no defects in the There are frogs present in the sediment ponds built into the stormwater lines which can be heard during the day and night. Tadpoles are also frequently spotted swimming in these waters. The vast majority of the vegetation planted on the site including the macrophytes and terrestrial vegetation species have established. The site is covered in Angophora costata seedlings derived from the remnant mature specimens surrounding the site. The threatened plant species Acacia terminalis subsp. terminalis (Sunshine Wattle) and other local species have colonised the site on their own. 30
