Media Release Date: 17/11/2011 STAFF ON HAND TO ENSURE SMOOTH TRANSITION FOR AGED DAY CENTRE CLIENTS North Shore Ryde Health Service staff are working with a local non government service provider to ensure frail aged clients of the Mosman Day Activity Centre experience a smooth transition to the new service provider. The Mosman Day Activity Centre is for older residents living in the Mosman and North Sydney local government areas. The centre provides activities and social opportunities for approximately 40 older people who are isolated or have physical disabilities. It also provides respite for carers. The program runs four days a week and offers centre-based activities and outings including a gentle exercise program, arts and crafts, education sessions, guest speakers and entertainers. The centre is one of three aged day activity centres at Chatswood, Mosman and Ryde that were provided by the North Shore Ryde Health Service. From December clients of the Mosman Day Activity Centre will have the opportunity to transition to Anglicare Chesalon Services in Mosman. This organisation operates under the Home and Community Care (HACC) program funded by the Ageing, Disability and Home Care Department (ADHAC). Existing Mosman Day Activity Centre clients will be given priority placement with this service. Community based aged care is a core business of ADHAC and it is best placed to provide and conduct these services. Clients have been informed about the changes and will be kept up to date as the transition progresses. There will also be opportunities in the coming weeks for Mosman Day Activity Centre clients to visit the new centre and meet Chesalon staff prior to transitioning in December. Staff from Chesalon Services will visit clients at the Mosman Day Activity Centre in the coming weeks and the Mosman staff will be available to help resettle clients into their new surroundings. Media inquiries: Melissa Chain 02 9926 7199 or 0413 025 742.

From the Editor's Desk Dear Reader Welcome back to the Over 55s Newsletter! This is the December 2011- January 2012 issue, and therefore, we have much to celebrate as Christmas and New Year are coming fast!!! I should start by mentioning 2 important events that can not be missed: on Friday the 16th of December, there will be our traditional Christmas Lunch! Join us between 12 and 2 pm for a festive time at the Seniors Centre (cost is $12), entertainment, Christmas carols and fantastic food guaranteed! Please do not forget to book with Olivier on 9978 4128. Also, for the shopping enthusiasts wanting to find that special something, jump on board and join our Saturday Out And About trip to Leura (Saturday 10th of December) for some Christmas Shopping, the places are limited, so call Olivier soon (the cost is $20). I also wanted to take this opportunity to welcome John McGarry our fantastic new driver and welcome Douglas back as well, after his year off touring the world with his family. We are most grateful to have 2 new drivers and they will be a great help for community transport. She Hawke has also become the coordinator for the Mosman Rider, welcome to her too! In regards to 2012, you will notice that some of the activities are changing slightly. One of them is Table Tennis; we have had ongoing difficulties in catering for this group, both because of the space and because only the youth Centre had the tables. We apologise to everyone involved in this activity as it has been very difficult for our dedicated Ping Pong-ers to keep on playing despite their best efforts; as of January 2012, the activity will start again, this time every Wednesday between 10am and 3.30 pm and will be held… at the Seniors Centre (we are buying tables)!. In this manner, it will be easier to have this activity regularly and we hope that many more people join us. More great news, the “Friday afternoon at the movies” will become a regular feature as off February 2012. Join us every second Friday of the month after the community restaurant between 200 and 430 pm at the Seniors Centre to watch (for free, thanks to the Spit Junction Community Bank, Bendigo Bank!) some of the greatest classic films of all times such as “Orphee” (1949), “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962), “Citizen Kane” (1941), “A tale of Two Cities” (1935) to name a few… Keep an eye at the Centre for the flyers which will be announcing which movie is coming up next!!! We are really hoping that this activity will take off, and we are sure that you will be delighted with our selection of movies; bring some popcorn! A quick note on the men’s shed, it is coming along and has started being built, keep an eye on our next issue for more information, or call Ryan on 9978 4126 or Olivier on 9978 4128. It will be a new and exciting feature in the community for 2012! Finally, please remember that the centre will be closed on the following dates: Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 December (no community restaurant) as well as on 2 January 2012. The centre will be open the rest of the time as per normal, and if you are part of any of the activities, you might want to check with Olivier (9978 4128) when the activities will stop and start again. Finally, the entire ADS team want to wish you and your families an amazing Christmas and a fantastic new year 2012, and we hope to see you all back in January for more activities and great times!

Community Restaurant Happy Christmas one and all! I can’t believe it is that time of year already! Where has the year gone?? It’s certainly starting to feel like Christmas, with the weather getting hotter every day. Please remember to drink a lot of water. It is so important to keep yourselves well hydrated. A lot of the small health issues that affect us as we get older can be corrected by keeping up your fluids! What a wonderful year we have had in the Community Restaurant! It would not all flow so smoothly without the help and support of our wonderful Volunteers! Thank you so much to Riad, Henny, Helen, Pashma, Rhonda, Mary, Alison, Suzanne, Sandra, Maria and Anne. We couldn’t continue without you! I also want to thank the Staff who help out all the time; both when we are short staffed due to ill health or holidays or in an emergency!! Olivier, Denise, Maria, Lyn, Dianne and Ryan. Cheryl and I appreciate you all so much. Special thanks to Lillia who works quietly in the background, keeping everything flowing smoothly in the kitchen. Lillia is replacing Hannah, while Hannah is on Maternity Leave and she is doing a fantastic job!! Thankyou Lillia! The Melbourne Cup lunch was fabulous this year! I can’t thank the members of staff enough who stepped in to help. Denise and Lyn for running the sweeps so professionally and Katrina for helping out behind the scenes. We have a great team here in the Seniors Centre!! The Fancy Hat Parade was such fun. Thank you all so much for making such an effort with your hats! Everyone looked great, but the lucky winners were Clifton Haynes, Whitney Oey and Joan Horton. Thanks to our Manager, Niki Atmore and the Director, Dianne Lawrence. This year our Christmas Lunch will be on Friday 16th December. I have some, or all, members of the Palumbo family coming to sing Christmas carols with us. (Remember they sang at the Anzac Lunch and the son, Ben, sang at the French Lunch). It should be lovely. Now! I know I don’t have to remind you to book in with Olivier for this lunch! It is always very popular and we would hate anyone to miss out at Christmas. Olivier will be coming ‘round at the next few lunches taking bookings. Be sure to tell him if you want to sit somewhere special. The Australia Day Lunch will be on Friday 27th January, so book in with Olivier for that lunch as well. The special lunches will remain at $12.00 for the time being. Please take care over the busy Christmas period and I hope you enjoy some special time with family and loved ones. Wishing you all the best for 2012 and a happy and peaceful Christmas. Special Love From Mary, the Kitchen Fairy!

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO START – JUST ASK MARY Name: Mary Age: 94 Lives: Mosman Attends: Upright & Active Class at Mosman Senior’s Centre Mary has been attending the Upright and Active class at Mosman Senior’s for four years now. She was prompted to join the class because she felt it was time to have some regular exercise. Mary also likes the social aspect of being in a group class. So take Mary’s advice “Make the decision and try it out.” Go on, make a New Years resolution to start exercising - the Upright & Active class will recommence 2 February 2012. Community Support AN OVERVIEW OF RESIDENTIAL CARE In the role of Community Support Officer we are often called upon to discuss the pros and cons if a client, carer or a family member, wants to know more about residential care. Of course we also stress the benefits of remaining in your own home, by utilising services available in the community, what is available and how you can access these services. In this article, however, we will provide an overview of residential care and try to clarify some details of this often complex area. The information provided has been taken from the Aged-Care Rights Service (TARS) website. TARS also provides an Older Persons’ Legal Service. Low level and high level care aged care homes provide residential aged care to permanent residents. They are subsidised by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing. These homes are regulated by the Commonwealth Aged Care Act 1997 and Aged Care Principles as well as some State legislation eg for building regulations, food handling provisions and registration of staff. In order to access an aged care home it is necessary to have an assessment by an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) to determine if the person requires low or high level care. The team at the Royal North Shore Hospital would provide this service to those living on the lower north shore. Low Level Care The accommodation is usually a single room with basic furniture and sometimes an ensuite bathroom and/or kitchenette. The resident is provided with supervision, meals, laundry and cleaning services. Other services available include social activities, diversional therapy, and allied health care, for example, physiotherapy. Personal and some basic nursing care is provided in accordance with specified services. Low Care Fees Fees and charges are set by the Department of Health and Ageing. All residents pay a Basic Daily Care Fee which is 84% of the aged pension. This fee is varied according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the same way as the Age Pension. Residents who are part pensioners or self funded retirees and have a private income, may be assessed by Centrelink and be required to pay an Income Tested Fee. This fee is capped and is reviewed quarterly. Almost all residents, depending on their assets, may be asked to pay an Accommodation Bond to secure a place in the hostel. This is an amount

8

negotiated between the resident and the provider and is refunded when the resident leaves the home; a pre-determined drawdown amount is retained by the provider, as well as any interest earned on the investment of the bond by the home. The care provider receives a subsidy from the Commonwealth Government for each resident based on the level of care they require. High Level Care This consists of care based on the resident’s assessed needs. A registered nurse is available on duty 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Medication management is also available, delivered by qualified nursing staff. Meals, laundry and housekeeping services are provided. An assessment is required by an Aged Care Assessment Team before entry into a nursing home. High Care Fees High care residents pay the same Basic Daily Care Fee and Income Tested Fee as hostel residents. Some residents, depending on their assets are required to pay an Accommodation Charge as well. This fee is capped and reviewed according to the CPI; it is payable for the duration of the resident’s stay in the home. Some residents may be assessed by Centrelink and be required to pay an Income Tested Fee. This fee is capped and reviewed quarterly. In a nursing home the Commonwealth Government subsidies are paid at a higher rate to reflect the higher level of care provided. Supported Resident The Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing makes provision for hostel and nursing home residents who cannot afford to pay an Accommodation Bond or charge. These residents pay only the Basic Daily Care Fee and the government pays an extra subsidy to the provider on their behalf. An asset assessment is needed to access this assistance. Ageing in Place A resident receiving low level care whose needs increase may receive high level care in the same home if that home provides ageing in place. It is necessary for the home to have met certain standards in order to be able to provide ageing in place. If you would like to know more about residential care or have other enquiries please make a time to see Chantal and myself by phoning 9978 4119. The Aged Care Rights Service is available on 9281 3600 or to access the website go to www.tars.com.au. We would like to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and look forward to assisting you in 2012. Lyn Kelleher

Stella’s 90th Birthday Poem To celebrate my 90th year I thought now don’t be a wuss, Sky diving would be fun – it soon became a must. I’ll take all the tests that the Dr suggests, She said start with a psychiatrist, that would be best, “For a ninety year old lady to jump from a plane, You will break something for sure, you must be insane.” My family agreed and the subject was banned. I diligently followed the exercises the physio planned. Down to Wollongong on “the day” – here at last! I arrived pushing my walker, the other divers looked aghast. The reaction was mixed: “This cant be right!” “She is so old, she’ll die of fright!” Instructions on the bus were brief and easy to understand, Bend back when you jump, bend your knees when you land. I could not climb the ladder to enter the plane, So was hoisted aboard by two gorgeous young men. No seats! Legs apart, two rows of eight. Like a Roman orgy – but I am sure not as great… Thick white clouds filled the sky, We kept on climbing, “Is 14 000 feet really so high?” At last we levelled out, and up went the door, My instructor said “good luck, we are number 4.” Icy cold, upside down we spun, For a whole 83 seconds, it wasn’t much fun. A tap on my back and I stretched like a star. Then a thud on my shoulders, the best moment so far. The parachute opened and as it unfurled The sun came out – I thought “What a wonderful World!” We swayed and circled as free as a bird, I was floating in heaven and then suddenly I heard: “Pull your legs up, Stella, as high as you can.” I was glad my instructor was a nice strong man. Sadly it was all over, it was truly grand. He had landed me safely, with my bum in the sand! My instructor got hugs as he unhooked my gear, And I thought “this is a perfect way to spend a ninetieth year!” There was my family, all smiles and forgiving. They understood how much I appreciate living. And now it’s all finished, and no more fuss, I have been skydiving – and I am not a wuss!

Carers are wonderful people who care for relatives or friends who have an illness, Dementia or a disability and all Carers deserve to be recognised, congratulated and thanked for all they do.

Computer Pals Poem by Margaret Szalay The computer swallowed grandpa. Yes, honestly it’s true! He pressed ‘Control and Enter’ and disappeared from view. It devoured him completely, The thought just makes me squirm. He must have caught a virus, Or been eaten by a worm, I’ve searched through the recycled bin And files of every kind, I’ve even used the Internet, But nothing did I find. In desperation, I asked Mr. Google My searches to refine. The reply from him was negative, Not a thing was found ‘online’ So, if inside your ‘Inbox’, My grandpa should you see, Please ‘Copy, Scan’ and ‘Paste’ him And send him back to me. This is a tribute to all the Grandmas and Grandpas who have been fearless and learned to use the computer. They are the greatest!!! We do not stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing. Never be the first to get old!

What’s on at Mosman Art Gallery Open Air Saturday 29 October – Saturday 31 December 2011 Open Air by Chris Caines is a project in two parts, a responsive video installation at Mosman Art Gallery and a companion locative audio essay iPhone application for the Curlew Camp Artist’s Trail at Little Sirius Cove. The project is a meditation on the tradition of landscape as a subject for artists in Australia from 19th century painting to the media arts of the present day.

Ship to Shore: Australian Society of Marine Artists exhibition. Saturday 26 November – Saturday 31 December 2011 Marine art is a time honoured genre that in western cultures has evolved from the Dutch painters of the 16th and 17th centuries who portrayed fishermen and traders of the North Sea. This, along with the discovery of the New World and the advances in ship building and navigation produced great painters on both sides of the Atlantic including John Turner and Winslow Homer, who revelled in maritime subjects. The first marine artists in Australia were the Aboriginal people who witnessed and recorded the activities of Indonesian and Malay fishermen in our North West, followed by the arrival of the first European ships. In the First Fleet there were artists who recorded the growth of the colony and the other colonies that followed. Today marine art incorporates any theme or subject that is related to the sea, river or estuary, including people and activities both past and present which are linked with the sea and its environs. Ship to Shore: The 11th National Australian Society of Marine Artists exhibition showcases a range of marine imagery including seascapes.

The term broadband refers to a telecommunications signal or device of greater bandwidth, in some sense, than another standard or usual signal or device (and the broader the band, the greater the capacity for traffic). Different criteria for "broad" have been applied in different contexts and at different times. Its origin is in physics, acoustics and radio systems engineering, where it had been used with a meaning similar to wideband. However, the term became popularized through the 1990s as a vague marketing term for Internet access.

Broadband for seniors!

For anyone interested in knitting The Mosman Knitting group has been actively contributing to a charity organisation called Wraps with Love. WWL dispatches quilts and covers to the four corners of the world, involving thousands of knitters all across Sydney and Australia. In November, the count for 2011 was already nearly 27 000 blankets and since 1992, WWL has helped distributing over 250 000 quilts worldwide. Volunteering Mosman is extremely proud of its volunteers, and rightly so. Many have been volunteering in the Mosman Community for more than 20 years, and recently three of these special people were invited to join Cr Anne Connon, the Mayor of Mosman, for afternoon tea. It was a wonderful opportunity to get together and Mrs Helen Egan, Mrs Jill Mercer and Mr Bruce Wallace shared memories of their volunteering experiences and discussed how volunteering has changed over the years. Many of Councils programs could not function without the support of our wonderful and greatly valued volunteers.
