From the Editor’s Desk Dear readers, Welcome back to the Mosman Council’s Over 55s Newsletter! In this issue you will find all the relevant information regarding our services and activities; we are open Monday to Friday from 9.00 am - 5 pm. Winter time might be the opportunity to join us if you have not been yet! We have tons of great activities to keep you busy and warm; why don’t you join us for a game of table Tennis on Wednesday afternoons or for a gentle exercise class on Tuesdays or for a Tai Chi lesson with a Tai Chi master on Mondays? There are also many other activities you can join, a simple game of mahjong or bingo for relaxation, or contributing to the very active knitting group for a good cause - read about Wraps with Love and the Mosman Knitting group in this issue. New residents often ask what is the best way to join; there is no joining fee and you do not need to be a member. You are welcome to attend most activities without booking, just come along! The community restaurant offers a great way to discover the centre and meet new people so keep the restaurant in mind. It operates every Tuesday and Friday between 12 - 2 pm and is free the first time you come, so bring a friend and join us! This Winter we will have the Tax Return Program returning to the centre; it will be official after 1 July so call Olivier on 9978 4128 to check eligibility for this service, then book a time slot for your online tax return with an accredited ATO volunteer. Keep an eye on new events and don’t hesitate to visit us or phone Olivier on 9978 4128. The end of May marked the beginning of the Guringai Festival which is on until 14 July. Have a look at the website on www.mosman.nsw.gov.au for more information. Until the next edition, Stay warm and see you soon!

News from the Community Restaurant Welcome to Winter!! Bbbrrrrrrr‌. The days are certainly getting colder, but the beautiful sun we've been having is really making the winter quite pleasant! We're into our winter menu and I haven't had too many complaints! Of course the hot soup is always welcome on a cold day and I love all the crumbles and apple pies that are available!! The Anzac Lunch was great this year, with the special entertainment by our friends Anne, Paul and Ben - his voice just keeps on improving!! The Hawaiian Lunch made a nice change in the middle of winter and I know you all enjoyed the tropical food!! I can't say that banjo playing is my favourite instrument of all times, but it did make you think of palm trees and hula girls!! Thank you for wearing those bright summery clothes! It really made a difference to the room and we had a couple of truly fabulous dancers among you, able to really bring the spirit of Hawaii into the room!! I don't think any of us will forget Brian in his bright Hawaiian shirt!! Lunch to celebrate the Guringai Festival was fun also. The Aboriginal family who joined us and played instruments and danced were really inspirational and I thank them for giving up their time to be with us! They are very much in demand!! Coming up we have our very favorite special lunch of the year! French!! This will be on Friday 26 July and it's very important you book in with Olivier for this one, as it fills up quickly and I really can't fit in extra people once we've closed the bookings! The lunch will cost $12.00, as with all our special theme lunches and try to wear "French" clothes! Beret's, stripes, red white and blue!! On Friday 30 August we are having a Russian theme!! We have never had Russian before, so it will be interesting! Cheryl went to Russia earlier this year and has brought us all back a little Russian treat! On Friday 27 September we are having a Mexican theme lunch!! We all love Mexico, so this will be fun!! 4

By the time you are reading this Newsletter we will have a new Seniors Centre Assistant, so I would like to use this opportunity to thank Doug for all the help he has given us in the gap between Paul leaving and the new person starting! I will miss your sense of humor in the kitchen, Doug! Even if you do hate washing up, you have been great company and lots of fun!! I know we'll still see you around! I would also like to welcome a new Volunteer who's started on Tuesday. Akiko Iwata has joined the group and is enjoying being a part of the Community Restaurant. Please make her welcome. The students from Mosman High who have been regularly joining us for lunch are really enjoying being with you all. So thank you for embracing the idea and making them feel so welcome. Apparently there is a waiting list at the school for kids who want to come up to the Seniors Centre!! Keep warm and keep up the fluids! It's easy to forget to drink in winter, but we need to drink just as much as the heating dries our bodies in winter just as much as the summer heat!! Cheers!! Mary the Kitchen Fairy!!

Community Support Could You Use Some Community Support As we are now half way through the year, I would like to remind everyone that help is at hand, whether via a phone call or a visit to your home or our office in the Seniors Centre. Chantal and I assist more than 200 individuals each quarter (this is information based on the statistical information we are required to keep and provide to the funding body, The Department of Health and Ageing). Sometimes finding the right contact for help is difficult, particularly if you are unwell or feeling a little stressed. As Community Support Officers, Chantal and I provide individual information and guidance to older residents, people with a disability, their families, carers and workers from the wider service network. We listen and ensure that people’s needs are heard, understood and dealt with in an appropriate manner. If you would like some information on services to meet your needs, we would be very happy to visit you, or if you prefer, you are welcome to come into the office but we would encourage you to ring us on 9978 4119 and make a time to meet, as we are not always available. Mosman Council has an excellent record of providing support to its older residents. I often have very positive comments from those who take advantage of the range of services and activities offered through the Council’s Aged and Disability Services. In fact I have also had positive feedback from sources, who, have become aware of the support available and are not Mosman residents. However there are still those who would benefit considerably from the support available but for their own reasons are not even willing to ‘give it a go’. I urge those who may be in this category, with the start of the last half of 2013 upon us, to consider the benefits and at least be willing to discuss how the support may enhance your lives. Chantal and I are just a phone call or a visit away. If we are away from the office or on the phone, your call may go to an answering service. We realise this can be frustrating, but don’t despair, just leave us a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Together we can look at services or other options that just may assist you in making decisions and choices. Lyn Kelleher & Chantal Kerr Community Support 8

Mosman Carers Group Caring for Carers Carers, take that first step ! Mosman Carers Group was established over 9 years ago, and during this time many Carers have told me how helpful the group has been to them in their caring role and also how hard it had been for many to take the first step and come along! “ I was under a lot of emotional pressure and learning to deal with the changes to our lives since my husbands diagnosis. My role had changed, tasks and decisions that used to be shared were now solely my responsibility and I felt very alone. I knew I needed support but had mixed feelings about attending a group, I felt that as a wife I should be coping and was worried I would be judged by others, but I knew I needed support so decided to give it a go. When I arrived at the first meeting I was apprehensive and concerned about whether I really wanted to discuss my feelings and tell people I hadn’t met before about my fears and worries, but I was greeted warmly and made to feel welcome from the start. I soon realised that I didn’t have to speak at all if I didn’t want to, but as I became more comfortable, found it helped me to discuss my concerns and the other Carers were so supportive and understood . The information provided by guest speakers was so helpful and the genuine warmth and support of the other Carers was invaluable and helped me feel less alone. I now know that although taking that 1st step into a room full of strangers was very hard, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I encourage anyone thinking about coming along to the Mosman Carers Group to do so, you won’t regret it.” More Feedback: “ Being a Carer can be hard at the best of times, but the information , support and new friends I’ve made have helped me enormously. Thank you Mosman Carers Group.” If you are a Carer take that first step and come along to the Mosman Carers Group, you will be most welcome. Please contact me if you wish to discuss the group or would like any further information. Warm regards Liz Nagel, Carers Group Coordinator, 99784089 9

Mosman Is Volunteering Council Celebrates and thanks you—Harbour Cruise 16 May 2013 Volunteers are the foundation of many important services in most communities around Australia and we are lucky enough in Mosman to have a large and dedicated group of people willing to give some of their time back to the community. So we’ve been busy the last few months making sure that all our volunteers know just how much we appreciate them. In May during volunteer’s week we hosted an afternoon tea harbour cruise. It was a glorious day on the harbour, the sun was out and everyone enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea as we cruised past some of Sydney’s iconic landmarks . The mayor of Mosman Peter Abelson gave a speech thanking Mosman’s Volunteers and handed out many long service awards, including a number of 20year

recipients. 10

Some of our wonderful Volunteers enjoying cruising the afternoon away; can you spot the Kitchen Fairy?? In June we also had the opportunity to hold a pamper day. Volunteers were invited to come into the Mosman Seniors Centre and choose between a massage, manicure or reflexology. We had a barista on site providing free coffee and some delicious sandwiches and cakes. Everyone who attended had a wonderfully relaxing time. We know that our many volunteers don’t give their time for any reward, but it is nice to be able to show our appreciation for what they give to the Mosman Community. Review of the show is below... Shakespeare’s Soliloquies meet Showbiz and Sequins

starring AIM premier graduate Julian Kuo with Sydney’s hottest Musical Director Mark Chamberlain If Shakespeare were alive today, commercial genius that he was, he’d be writing blockbuster musicals – which is exactly what we have him do. Each famous soliloquy is topped by the Broadway showstopper he would love to have written. ‘To be or not to be’ followed by … That’s the whole fun of this wicked take. “Imagine watching many of Shakespeare’s major themes with a Broadway show tune. You’re right, it’s almost unimaginable: seeing is the only possible believing. At its best, and in Kuo’s care, it is transporting and deeply moving. At its worst? There is no worst. It’s, by turns, sad, poignant, bitter, twisted, sarcastic. And downright hilarious” Lloyd Bradford Sykes, Crikey.com

Alzheimer’s – Safely Home Program NSW – SAFELY HOME Safely Home can help people living with dementia walk safely by providing rapid and accurate identification if they get lost. Safely Home is a joint partnership between Alzheimer’s Australia NSW and the Missing Persons Unit of the NSW Police Force.

WHAT IS SAFELY HOME? Safely Home provides a stainless steel bracelet, designed to be worn at all times by the person with dementia. It features an engraved toll free telephone number and personal identification number linked to the NSW Police Missing Person’s Unit database. The confidential database includes a detailed description of the person with dementia, including a photograph where provided, contact information, previous residential addresses and locations the person may visit. The database is accessible by police at all times. Safely Home is suitable for anyone with intellectual disabilities at risk of becoming lost.

HOW DOES IT WORK? When someone finds the lost person, they telephone the Missing Person’s Unit and quote the identification number on the bracelet. The police will make arrangements for them to be returned home. * Carer’s can use Safely Home to instigate a search for the person with dementia by contacting their police station and filing a Missing Persons Report. * Safely Home is ideal for use both in home situations & aged care facilities.

IS THERE A COST? Safely Home has a nominal registration charge of $39 for a member of Alzheimer’s Australia and $54 for a non-member.

HOW DO I JOIN? To obtain an information kit, download the Safely Home brochure which includes the registration form for the Missing Person’s Unit and instruction guide to filling in the registration form or contact National Dementia Helpline 1800100500.

HOW DO I REPLACE A LOST BRACELET? Fill in the Safely Home Bracelet Replacement Form. A fee applies to cover cost of replaced bracelet. For useful ideas on how to encourage a person to wear a Safely Home bracelet see out tips sheet. 17 https://www.fightdementia.org.au/content/nsw-safely-home

ADVENTURES BY BUS

Southern Highlands / Harpers Mansion In May, the 55s + bus left Mosman on a Sunny cool morning saying farewell to traffic lights as the bus turned onto the bridge – the next stop would be in Mittagong. Andrew steered the bus through the CBD and on passing Mascott the bus went under an overpass that proved to be a runway with a Virgin Airplane. Then, out onto the countryside, with tall timbers, rolling hills and quiet valley’s with grazing cattle. As the bus entered the southern highlands one could see autumn had splashed gold, red and russet across the landscape. Through Mittagong and along the Old Hume Highway to our first destination – the home of James and Mary Harper overlooking old historic Berrima, which was known to the local aboriginals as Dharawal. James, the son of ex convicts, came to Berrima as constable for Sutton Forrest in 1829 and built his Georgian Styled brick residence on sandstone foundations – situated on 100 acres of land. It was the largest and most imposing home in the district for some time. In 1835 James resigned his post to open the Surveyor general Hotel which stayed in the family till 1924. In 1849 James died, Mary was unable to keep the house which was subsequently sold top the R.C. Church, used for many purposes before being fully restored by the National Trust for all to see. Old Berrima is just down the Hill from the house with most activity on the eastern side of the curving town road. For those with historical interests, there were many 19th century buildings, including the 1850’s bakery, a number of churches, the house of corrections, court house, and Berrima Goal which took 5 years to build by convicts in leg irons and was used during WWI as a German internment camp. Berrima’s main road also has a bevy of delightfully artistic shops – the wares spilling out on to the pavement, adding color and interest, just the place for the group to wander.

33

The award winning gum nut Cake shop with its sculpture like cakes was ideal for the sweet tooth, and the Surveyor General hotel with its solid sandstone walls and log fires blazing have given a warm welcome to Cobb & Co Coach passengers in the past and still exudes a warm welcome. It is the oldest continually licensed hotel in Australia. Then, back on to the bus, to pass new Berrima, started near the 1960 s near the Boral cement works, traveling near the South east to our next stop – Moss Vale which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. Charles T Throsby was one of the first local large land owners to subdivide some of his land. The first lot was sold in 1863, four years later, the great Southern railway opened bringing new growth and services. From the 1870s to the 1950s Moss Vale was the official stop for NSW Governors traveling to the Sutton Forest Governor’s retreat used as a summer residence. Sutton Forest was named by Governor Macquarie as he passed through the area after Sir Charles Manners Sutton, the speaker of the House of Commons and Moss Vale is named after James Moss, an ex convict and servant to Charles Throsby. Andrew the driver dropped part of the group at one end of long winding main road and the rest at the RSL at the other end of town. For those wandering down the street, there was plenty to see, with an abundance of shops, some interesting antique outlets and numerous relaxing restaurants. Those who decided to go to Moss Vale’s RSL had a fabulous and very affordable smorgasbord before the whole group returned to the bus for the return trip to Mosman arriving just before 5.00 pm. A very enjoyable day in the Southern highlands. Over 55’s Bus Trip—By Di McK
