From the Editor’s Desk Dear readers, Welcome back to this new edition of your Over 55s Newsletter for July, August and September 2015! In this issue you will find all the Saturday outing trips, the restaurant dates, our weekly activities and lists of our services and a diary of events of what’s coming up next! This time again we have a lot of exciting and interesting news for you. Mosman is celebrating the Guringai Festival, and it started in style with the Aboriginal themed luncheon at the Community Restaurant on Friday the 26th June! We had a fantastic luncheon and great entertainment! But the festival carries on through to the first week in July; check our website (www.mosman.nsw.gov.au) for more info / programs on what’s on during the festival! The winter season is here, make sure you keep warm, it could also be a good time to check your smoke alarms if you have not done so already! Don’t let yourself get too cold, join us for Tai Chi or for gentle exercise, join the Tuesday dance group and enjoy ballroom dancing or simply come in for a warm cup of tea! This year again, the Tax help service is back at Council. It will operate from the Seniors Centre as of mid-July. We have a newly appointed ATO volunteer, as John retired from this service after 13 years with us! This year, you will need to get a MyGov account for your tax return, make sure you look at the ATO website and get an account before you book with us. You will then need to contact Olivier on 9978 4128 to organise a time with our ATO appointed accountant. With the refurbishment being truly over and the activities entering term 3, we really hope to see you more often at the Centre. Winter is a good time to start an activity, have a look at our programs at the end of the newsletter, in the meantime, please call us if you need support or services. From the Editor and the Aged and Disability Services team.

News from the Community Restaurant Hello from the Community Restaurant.

Cheers to all!!! Well winter is well and truly here and the Winter Menu has some delicious lunches. I think we're all particularly enjoying the yummy desserts; such as apple and rhubarb crumble, warm sticky date pudding and warm chocolate mud cake!! Not so good for the waistline, but delicious none the less and what is winter about if not some warm comfort food!!? Our last few lunches have been great and very well attended!! Don't forget to book in early for these special lunches, as they sell out very quickly. Our next 'big' lunch is a French Banquet, on Friday 24th July and is always one of our most popular lunches!! Olivier will be very happy to sell you the tickets for this particular lunch I know!! At the end of August, on Friday 28th, we will be having a special lunch to celebrate the Mosman Festival and to welcome Spring! This will be followed on Friday 25th September by an Italian Lunch, always a fabulous event! We all love Italian food and culture and this year I have organised a fabulous group of singers to perform for us!! They promise me they love singing Italian and seem to be a very professional troupe!! I have taken some leave for a few months, but am leaving you in the capable hands of the wonderful volunteers, the ADS staff - particularly Katrina, Olivier, Angie and Vicki. Together they are an amazing team and will look after your every need!! Replacing me is Claire Mullins (see page 9), who has been a volunteer for the last couple of years and knows and understands the Community Restaurant very well. Please be supportive of Claire as she "learns the ropes". She is an amazingly capable and confident person and will do a wonderful job!! I will pop in to see you all from time to time and will miss you all very much! As always thank you for supporting the Community Restaurant! Bon appetit!! Cheers

Mary Magnus The Kitchen Fairy! 4

Meals on Wheels Are you eating enough nutritious food this winter?! Eating enough means being able to maintain a healthy weight and even having a little extra weight ‘in reserve’ for times of illness or stress. Good nutrition improves well being Good nutrition improves wound healing. Good nutrition helps to preserve bone mass and maintain muscle strength, reducing the risk of falls and fractures. Good nutrition is important for health, independence and quality of life. At Mosman Meals on Wheels we have a huge selection of chilled (refrigerated) or frozen meals to choose from. Unlike many of the basic frozen meals on offer in the supermarket, all our nutritiously-balanced meals include potatoes, rice or pasta and a variety of fresh vegetables on the side. We can deliver meals to your home every day or as often as required (Monday to Friday) ready for you to heat in your oven or microwave. Salads and soups are available every day and sandwiches are available on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. We cater for special diets (eg gluten free) and can provide soft, chopped or pureed meals for people with chewing or swallowing difficulties.

Our prices: Soup $1.40 Sandwich $4.00 Juice Salad

Meal $5.80 Dessert $1.40

$0.50 } Meal package (meal, soup, dessert, juice) $8.50 $6.30 } Salad package (salad, soup, dessert, juice) $9.00

If you’re unsure of when you’ll be at home to receive deliveries, why not come to Meals on Wheels and collect some frozen meals. Simply bring a cool bag to the Meals on Wheels kitchen between 11am and 1pm and you can choose from our extensive frozen selection. Have you thought about taking away some frozen meals after your activities in the Seniors’ Centre? If you, or someone you know or care for, would like to try our home-delivered meals or have a look at our menu, please contact either Katrina or Denise on 9978 4130 or email meals@mosman.nsw.gov.au We are a very flexible service, offering both long and short-term assistance. Community Support MEDICINE INFORMATION - DID YOU KNOW? It is estimated that each year more than 140,000 Australians have to go to hospital with problems caused by their medicine and older people are particularly at risk.

HERE ARE SOME USEFUL TIPS YOU CAN DISCUSS WITH YOUR PHARMACIST Ask your Pharmacist for a Medicine List The more medicine you take, the more difficult it can be to remember important information about them. A Medicines List can be a useful way to keep all the information about your medicines together.

A Home Medicines Review (HMR) A Home Medicines Review involves your GP and an accredited Pharmacist of your choice. Your GP sets up the review by writing a referral to the Pharmacist. A Pharmacist conducts an interview, preferably in the comfort of your own home, and then writes a report back to the GP. The GP will discuss any recommendations with you and may make appropriate changes to your medication regime.

Home Medicines Reviews are particularly useful for people who: - take more than five medicines per day - have recently spent time in hospital - are concerned about their medicines - do not always remember to take their medicines The Pharmacist's review and report are paid for by the Australian Government, so it will not cost you anything. Your GP may bulk-bill or charge you for the GP consultations. If you (or someone you care for) might benefit from having a Home Medicines Review, talk to your GP or Pharmacist about organizing one.

The tea was hosted by the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Roy Bendall who acknowledged the priceless contribution made by our valued volunteers. Mosman Library Naming Ceremony Barry O’Keefe Library 10 June 2015

Barry O’Keefe would have been “absolutely chuffed” to know the Mosman Library building had been renamed in his honour, his son Andrew O’Keefe said at the renaming ceremony. It was Mr O’Keefe’s love for Mosman that drove him to run for council, Andrew said. He was a councillor for 23 years from 1968, 10 years of which he served as mayor. Mr O’Keefe, who passed away in April 2014, will forever be fondly remembered for his love for Mosman and his service to the Mosman Community. Representing the Prime Minister, Bronwyn Bishop MP described the vital role Mr O’Keefe and his wife Jan had played in Mosman’s cultural life. Members of the O’Keefe family along with close family friends and distinguished guests such as Dame Marie Bashir, Mosman Mayor Peter Abelson, The Hon. Jillian Skinner MP, Mayor of Manly Jean Hay and past and serving councillors attended the naming ceremony and unveiling of a commemorative plaque.

Hitler’s Lost Spy: Mosman’s Nazi Spy Monday 10 August 2015 7pm—8.30pm Greg Clancy tells an engrossing and curious story about Swiss born, Annette Wagner. Wagner arrived in Australia in the late 1930’s and within months had her own program on commercial radio. What better way to transmit coded messages. Wagner lived at The Manor, Clifton Gardens and remained in Australia for two years. In that time she was privy to a world of espionage including clandestine meeting of Nazi sympathisers at the Hydro Majestic, Medlow Bath. The evening promises to be a fascinating look at the story of Nazi spy, Annette Wagner. FREE PH: 9978 4101 Or get tickets online

What’s on at Mosman Art Gallery THE CLOUD: Biljana Jancic & Alex Munt Saturday 30 May - Sunday 23 August 2015 The vapour cloud is entrenched in art history, in the painting, sculpture, photography, cinema and architecture from both Eastern and Western traditions. Any talk of clouds today, is less likely to be in reference to those amorphous vapour structures drifting high above us, and more towards cloud computing, and in particular the infamous 'iCloud'. These data clouds on remote servers, form the site of our rapidly expanding dataverse. This collaborative new media and installation work by artists Biljana Jancic and Alex Munt questions our contemporary interactions with the physical, metaphorical, virtual and omnipresent cloudscapes. Poet’s Corner These are two beautiful poems submitted by Helen Anderson. If anyone is interested in forming a Poetry group please contact Olivier on 9978 4128.

Rain at Cobar Overfed clouds sulked, Rumbled with indigestion, Spewed their contents to the ground A feathered bush littered with birds Stretched upwards to gulp the feast A pup jumped alert as lightening flashed Tried to follow it with his eyes Tasted the air Then ran to smell this new thing It’s three months since it rained Somewhere a bamboo flute Played descant to the rain’s continuo

Cloud Burst Clouds burst Rain came Pelted my roof Played drums on my roof Rain lashed Lightening flashed Thunder crashed The pup growls The wind blows Trees bow Clouds burst Rain came Pelted my roof Played drums on my roof 32

Drops of rain Played Chopin Compound the din Gutters overflow Tanks overflow Rivers overflow Clouds burst Rain came Pelted my roof Played drums on my roof A flower unfolds The soil holds Shoots of gold Birds swing With open wing Shower and sing.
