From the Editor’s Desk Dear Readers, It is that time of the year again; spring is upon us and the end of the year festivities are just around the corner. This issue of the Over 55s Newsletter will cover October, November and December. Inside you will find all the information you are looking for: bus trips, restaurant dates, activities, services, etc… There are some changes in the office - you will see new faces around the Centre. We welcome Kazu, our new Aged & Disability Development Officer (she will be cosharing this role with Cheryl Morley) and Angela is the Seniors Centre Assistant; we are all so grateful they are on board. Read more about them in this newsletter! At the same time, Mosman Council farewelled Viv May, our long-standing General Manager. Veronica Lee, our new General Manager, commenced on 16 September and this is a small way to welcome her! During the next three months there are many events happening at the Seniors Centre, around Council and in Mosman in general. Of course one of the main items to keep an eye on is the Festival of Mosman which commenced on Saturday 28 September and will go through to Sunday 20 October. There are so many different things to enjoy, see, taste, look at and to get involved in, all around your neighbourhood, including the now well established “In-Situ” sculpture festival (5-20 October). One of the items that everyone is talking about is The International Fleet Review 3 –11 October, which included the pyrotechnics display and Lightshow Spectacular on the evening of 5 October. But this is only the tip of the iceberg! Get yourself a Festival of Mosman program, or check our website www.mosman.nsw.gov.au, where you can find all the useful information. Of course coming up is the exciting Melbourne Cup Lunch and shortly after that, our famous Christmas Lunch. Also we are trialing a Yoga class Thursday mornings. Contact 9978 4128 for details. We also have Scrabble, Mahjong and table tennis all at the Seniors Centre. Refer to our back page for all the activities. Merry Christmas and wishing you a fun and safe festive time.

Don’t forget the Rider is operating on the Summer Roster Summer October – April 2014 9 – 1pm & 2 – 6pm If you find the Rider a bit hard to manage, you may be eligible for Community Transport. Please contact our Transport team on 9978 4120 for further information. 3

News from the Community Restaurant Well.. my predictions of a cold winter were way off!! What a magnificent couple of months we’ve had, with beautiful blue sky days and a very pleasant, mild temperature! The Community Restaurant has been steadily filling up, which is great news for us all! The more of us there are, the more conversation and fun can be had by all!! Please, please make new diners welcome! Every one of you was new to the Restaurant once and I’m sure you remember how daunting it is to walk into a room where you know no-one, only to be told you can’t sit somewhere! Please ask Olivier to get me and I can seat people or simply add a table! It is not a hard task! It’s really important we make everyone comfortable. I know I can rely on your help in this area!! The last couple of ‘big’ lunches have been great fun! As always the French Lunch was totally booked out and beautiful young Ben and his friend were absolutely magnificent!!! What a magical voice he has and how wonderful that he could spare the time to come and sing for us! The Russian Lunch was also lots of fun, with everyone really enjoying the Borsch, Stroganoff and Romanoff!!! Our entertainer was good and everyone enjoyed the music, even if it wasn’t at all Russian!!!!! Mexico was great! We ALL love the food from ‘down Mexico way’!!

Coming up is of course Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday, 5 November with one of our biggest lunches of the year!! Get started on thinking about your hats for the Fancy Hat Parade! The categories: Most Sophisticated, Most Original and Most Creative!! We will be running a $1.00 & $2.00 sweep, so everyone should have a chance to have a win!!!! Remember to book in. Cost $12.00. We will be having an Aussie Spring Barbeque on Friday 25 October to celebrate the Festival of Mosman. No need to book and the cost is the same as a regular lunch $10.00. The last big lunch of the year will be CHRISTMAS!!! This year we celebrate Christmas in the Community Restaurant on Tuesday 17 December. Cost $12.00. Make sure you book with Olivier! That will be the last lunch of the year. The Restaurant resumes Tuesday 7 January 2014 It seems so early to wish everyone a happy and peace filled Christmas, but I do wish you all that, from the bottom of my heart. I want to thank you as well, for all your support throughout the year. Together; you, the clients, the volunteers and the staff make a very happy, cohesive group. Of course, the Community Restaurant would be nothing without the volunteers. I want to thank Helen, Henny, Pashma, Rhonda, Maria, Suzanne, Alison, Sandi, Akiko, Riad and Anne for all their hard work and happy, cheerful demeanor. They make our Community Restaurant the warm and happy place it is!! All our love for Christmas, from the Community Restaurant‌ Angie, Lilia, Vicki, Olivier and Mary the Kitchen Fairy!!!

Community Support A GUIDE TO SELECTING A HOME CARE PACKAGE PROVIDER

What do I do Next...

In recent times there have been changes to the way service packages are provided following an Aged Care Assessment, from the team at Royal North Shore Hospital. The following information may assist in understanding the new process and has been taken from an ACAT Fact Sheet. To start the process, as in the past, an Aged Care Assessment is required. This will require contact with the Intake Section of the Aged Care Assessment Team, Royal North Shore Hospital (9462 9386). From here you will receive a home visit from a member of the team, in a timely manner according to the urgency. They will at this time assess your level of care need. The types of packaged care available are currently: Home Care Packages Level 1 – 2 (low level care): in replacement of the Community Aged Care packages (CACPs) Home Care Packages Level 3 – 4 (high level care): in replacement of the Extended Aged Care at Home packages (EACH). Level 1 – 2 & 3 – 4 Home Care Packages will be complemented by new Supplements to support people with dementia or veterans with an accepted mental health condition. Step 1: The team member will then provide you with a Home Care Package Provider List. Using the list you should select a preferred provider, contact them as soon as possible to register your interest in receiving a Home Care Package approved by the Aged Care Assessment Team. You may elect to contact all of the providers, covering your area, to improve your chances of accessing a package and being placed on your preferred provider’s wait list. It is important to keep the Providers aware of your situation and level of need. Step 2: You need to supply your Medicare number and/or your Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) number to the provider, so they can access your Aged Care Client Record (ACCR) through Medicare. You would have previously been provided with a copy of the ACCR for your records. Step 3: It is recommended that you supply an additional contact name and phone number to the provider/s in case you are not at home when they call. This could be a family member, trusted friend or guardian. Step 4: When you are contacted with an offer of a Home Care Package, the provider will come to your home to discuss the services they are able to provide and the costs involved. It is highly recommended that you have a family member or a trusted friend with you to help discuss all the issues and clarify arrangements. 8

Please note that no Aged Care Assessment is required for simple service needs e.g. Domestic Assistance (for instance cleaning) and providers such as Home Care Services will continue to assist, directly. As usual the Community Support Officers at ADS would be happy of discuss any of your care needs. We are available on 9978 4119 Monday – Friday, or you may leave a message and we will return your call as soon as possible. Lyn Kelleher & Chantal Kerr

Mosman Carers Group Caring for Carers Mosman Carers Group meets weekly, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere every Wednesday morning 10am – 12 noon in the Harnett Rooms at Mosman Council. The group is an open one, those who attend care for family and friends with illnesses ranging from Dementia/Alzheimer's disease, terminal illness, mental and physical disabilities as well as mental health issues. There are weekly guest speakers and these important and informative sessions cover subjects such as Dementia/ Alzheimer's disease, grief and loss, compassion fatigue, legal issues, relaxation, meditation and many more. There are monthly support group/ get togethers when Carers meet to have a chat over a cup of tea and also regular full day bus outings. Carers say they find these outings a wonderful break and valuable respite from their caring role. Feedback from the Carers has been very positive, they say they find the group extremely valuable, appreciate the information, guest speakers and referrals as well as the relaxed and friendly atmosphere (also the laughter, which plays a big part in the meetings!) and wonderful friendships have formed. A vital part of the group is the friendship and support Carers give one another, they know only too well the highs and lows, frustrations and difficulties of being a Carer and are able to listen and offer advice and understanding. One Carer said that “I would not have survived without the Carers group”, another said “I value the group so much, I was never able to open up about my feelings but now find I can speak freely about how I feel, it has been an amazing help.” The weekly meetings are not only valuable for the information and support Carers receive, they also act as respite, a short break or “time out” for Carers; the full day outings are also a well needed, often vital break for Carers. If you are caring for someone, or you know someone who is, please contact me on 9978 4089 for more information. Warm regards, Liz Nagel, Carers Group Coordinator 9

WHAT IS SAFELY HOME? Safely Home provides a stainless steel bracelet, designed to be worn at all times by the person with dementia. Mosman Historical Society Meeting Date: Wednesday 13 November Time: 7pm Venue: Mosman Library ALL WELCOME. Members free. Visitors $5 each. Includes supper. SPEAKER: JUDITH DUNN SUBJECT: Colonial Ladies, Lovely, Lively & Lamentably Loose Mrs Dunn who was awarded an OAM, for services to History and Heritage will give a talk that has been developed from a five year study of the crimes of convict women and is a lively romp through their stories. These were crimes committed in the colony and the reason why they were incarcerated in the Female Factory or Convicts Women Gaol. Far from the weaker sex, meek and depressed, they were feisty, street wise and a bit lippy. Mentioned in dispatches to England as the most licentious women, the very dregs of society. Come hear the stories from the pathetic to the ridiculous and realize their ways were often their way of survival. Any queries please contact 0432 633 048.

Deaf Smoke Alarms Sound Warning with SASS Mosman residents who are deaf or hard of hearing can now sleep more safely with visual and tactile smoke alarms from the NSW Smoke Alarm Subsidy Scheme (SASS). The SASS, a joint initiative of Deaf Society of NSW, Fire and Rescue NSW, and NSW Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care, makes visual and tactile smoke alarms, worth up to $650, affordable for people in NSW who are deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing. A standard smoke alarm, which costs $50, is financially manageable. The SASS ensures that the cost of a smoke alarm is equitable for everyone with a $50 fee, which can be waived for people in financial difficulty. The Law in NSW requires smoke alarms in every home, caravans and mobile homes, but standard smoke alarms are not effective in alerting people who are deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing to a house fire. Further information about the different alarms available, as well as how to apply, is available from Deaf Society of NSW at www.deafsocietynsw.org.au/smokealarms. Alternatively people may contact the Deaf Society of NSW by voice on 8833 3600, TTY on 8833 3691 or fax on 8833 3699. 21

ADVENTURES BY BUS – September to Warragamba Dam – Report By Di McK As we traveled through the city, South West along the M5 the grey clouds gave way to blue. The motorway led through built up areas and out into the countryside, with tall timbers by the roads and pastures leading towards the Blue Mountains. Turning off the Hume Highway at the Cross Roads we travelled along Camden Valley Way. By the roadside we saw the Stardust Circus, Australia’s largest animal circus which was opposite the Panthers Club 15 Sep – 7 Oct. Turning up Northern Road we passed Bringelly and Badgery’s Creek Airport site. If this comes into fruition, one will need to take a cut lunch for the trip there. Our first stop was Luddenham for morning tea at the Village Café, with its large array of delightful cakes. Luddenham this year is celebrating its bicentenary on 30 November. The area was owned by John Blaxland who received 6,710 acres granted 30 November 1813. The famous Gregory Blaxland was his elder brother and Luddenham the name of the Blaxland’s property in Kent. We then turned down Park Street passing down Wallacia with its mock Tudor Hotel Wallacia to the Warragamba dam. Situated by Lake Buragarrang, the Gunyunggalugg speaking people believed that during the dreamtime, this area was gouged out during a fight between Mirragah a large tiger-like cat and Gurangatch a part fish, part reptile. The need to organise water for Sydney goes back to 1788 when Capt. Arthur Phillip found a stream of freshwater flowing into what is today known as Circular Quay. In 1789 he ordered tanks to be hewn out of the sandstone to make sure water was kept for dry seasons and it became known as the Tank Stream. With more convicts arriving in 1826 this was abandoned in favour of the Bushby Bore, a convict-built 4km tunnel from the Lachlan Swamps (Centennial Park) to the South East Corner of Hyde Park. In 1859 with the increase in population the water source was changed to the Botany Swamp Scheme and this source was changed to the Upper Nepean System when completed in 1888. It continued to supply Sydney into the 20th Century. With the severe droughts of 1934 and 1942 it was decided a larger dam was needed – Warragamba Dam started in 1946.1,800 men from 25 countries completed the dam which was officially opened on 14 October 1960. Today, it is one of the world’s largest dam systems. To make sure the waters are pristine, about 28% of the catchment area is classified as a special area restricting public access. It is a haven for wallabies, wombats, microbats, possums, nearly pure dingoes, bush tailed rock wallabies, long nose potaroos, platypus and squirreled gliders. After wandering around the lookout, the water and the Visitor’s Centre with its audiovisual and inter active displays, the group retired to the Warragamba Workers and Sportsman’s Club for lunch before returning to the bus for our trip back to Mosman, arriving around 4.30pm. An interesting and informative day thanks to Andrew’s expert driving. 33
