From the Editor’s Desk Dear readers, After some much needed rain in August the lovely sun is shining as we welcome Spring. In this newsletter you will find all the information about activities and services taking place at the Seniors Centre. Once again, the next few months are full of events and surprises. The Community restaurant will celebrate Melbourne Cup in style on Tuesday 4 November so make sure you book well in advance as the theme lunches are increasingly popular. On that note we know some of you missed out on the French and Scottish themed lunches and we are sorry but please remember to book early to avoid disappointment and be able to join the fun . Coming up we have great Saturday bus trips to; Wollombi, Rhododendron Festival in Blackheath, and the classic Christmas shopping in Leura bookings essential. In the meantime, keep an eye on our programs at the Centre. Besides the regular activities we are organising a new Balance Class scheduled for November, bookings essential. If you have not lodged your Tax Return you may qualify to have until end of October to submit your form through an approved ATO accountant, such as our Tax Help specialist John who visits Thursday mornings (by appointment) and every Friday afternoon until end of October. Seniors Centre scheduled refurbishment looks more likely to be at the beginning of 2015. Due to renovations some activities will relocate temporarily - any queries regarding your activities please see our friendly staff prior to the refurbishment starting. The result will be fantastic for all seniors, visitors and staff; our centre will have a new stereo/sound system, plus other new items and overall will have a more functional layout. Throughout the renovation period we endeavor to keep disruptions to a minimal but please understand any changes will be temporary. Chinese Mah-jong led by Jeffery has started meeting every Thursday 2pm in the Seniors Lounge. This new group are enjoying learning a new game and challenge - feel free to watch or join in the fun; Jeffery would be more than happy to assist you to learn the basics, so come and join us. Although a couple of months off, we wish all our clients a fantastic Christmas and wonderful New Year. Visit us in 2015 at the Centre for more activities, films, outings, fun and information that our department offers. For bookings and enquiries please contact Olivier on 9978 4128. Enjoy the warmer months and have a festive Christmas.

Community Support CENTRELINK PAYMENTS & CONCESSIONS If you receive a Centrelink pension and plan to live or travel outside Australia for more than 26 weeks, please read on‌ Centrelink has advised that since 1 July 2014 the rules on how much pension you can be paid while living or travelling outside Australia have changed. If you intend to leave Australia and receive an Age Pension, or in limited circumstances a Disability Support Pension, Wife Pension or Widow B Pension, you may be affected. The changes apply if you are travelling outside Australia for more than 26 weeks or are paid under the terms of one of Australia’s Social Security agreements. To continue receiving your full rate of Australian pension you will generally need to have spent 35 years of your working life between the age of 16 and age pension age in Australia. This is an increase from the current 25 years of Australian working life residence. You do not need to have worked or paid tax during this period. If you have less than 35 years Australian working life residence your rate of payment will be reduced. For example, if you have 27 years Australian working life residence, you will get 27/35ths (77 per cent) of the maximum means-tested rate of payment. If you are planning to travel outside Australia, you should check how these changes may affect your payments before you go. For more information go to humanservices.gov.au/paymentsoverseas or call 132 300.

Claiming a Foreign Pension... Have you ever lived and worked in a country other than Australia? Then you may be entitled to receive a pension from that country. To work out if you are eligible and how to claim your foreign pension you need to contact Centrelink on 132 300. It is the only appointed organization within Australia that can officially lodge claims on your behalf. If you are receiving a foreign pension, this may affect the amount of age pension you are entitled to. For any general information you may require on the above, please contact Lyn Kelleher or Chantal Kerr, Community Support Officers, Mosman Council 4 Aged & Disability Services Ph: 9978 4119.

News from the Community Restaurant I can't believe this is the last newsletter of the year! We have had a great year in the Restaurant, tinged with sadness of course, with the passing of our friend and volunteer Pashma. The French Banquet was a great success, as always. This year was particularly special with our friend Mercedes putting on a great show. Your participation was fantastic and everyone enjoyed the singing and dancing. Another successful event was our Scottish theme lunch, Dave the Wild Scotsman playing his bagpipes with great enthusiasm and teaching a few Scottish jigs! Some of you have a hidden talent that I may be tapping into down the track! The Japanese Lunch in September was beautiful, with a lot of help from our volunteers. Thank you to Mary for making all the lovely little origami swans and turning the serviettes into fans! Also Akiko for travelling to a special Japanese shop to find some yummy treats for you all! Once again our friend Kay Tong and her special group of dancers from Chatswood entertained us beautifully. It seems they can turn their hand to anything, Japanese dances as well as Chinese. Coming up is the inimitable Melbourne Cup Lunch, the highlight of our year! Get your thinking caps on for what sort of a special hat you will wear on the day. We will have a Fancy Hat Parade but trying to keep up with previous years fabulous creations is going to be a challenge! Next is the Christmas Lunch, Friday 19 December please remember to book in early for both these lunches as they sell out very quickly! I would sincerely like to thank all our volunteers for another wonderful year of hard work. We can't do without them, they are the soul of the Community Restaurant! Wishing you all a safe and Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2015! Mary the Kitchen Fairy The Community Restaurant closes after 19 December and re-opens 6 January 2015. Remember that the first Tuesday of each month is ‘Cheap Tuesday’ $7.00 meals! Please continue to book for Theme Lunches scheduled last Friday of each month at $12.00 per person for a three course meal. We look forward to seeing you back at the Community restaurant in 2015.

Our new summer menu Our new summer menu starts in November. With a range of tasty meals for you to choose from - including fish, casseroles, frittatas, pasta, rissoles, roast dinners, vegetarian and glutenfree options - there really is something to suit all tastes. We also have delicious summer desserts, salads, and fresh sandwiches. Our fresh, refrigerated meals are delivered direct to your home, ready for you to heat in your oven or microwave when required. Frozen meals are also available for your convenience. We are a very flexible service, offering both long and short-term assistance (for example following surgery or a hospital stay). We can deliver once, twice or five times a week, so please give us a call to discuss your requirements.

Take-away

If you’re unsure of when you’ll be at home to receive deliveries, why not bring a cool bag to the Meals on Wheels kitchen and collect some frozen meals. Come between 11am and 1pm and you can choose from our extensive frozen selection or phone ahead and we’ll have the meals packed and ready for you to collect at a convenient time.

Christmas and closure dates

Looking ahead over the next few months, the Meals on Wheels office will be closed from the afternoon of 24 December and will re-open on Monday 5 January 2015. Our volunteers will not be delivering meals while we are closed but frozen meals can be ordered in advance. From 15 December, we will be offering our delicious Christmas Day dinner (frozen) - available for delivery or pick up – roast turkey breast, leg ham, roast potatoes, roast vegies, gravy and cranberry sauce, together with traditional Christmas plum pudding with brandy custard for dessert all for only $8.50!! Due to the high demand for these Christmas dinners, there is a limit of one meal per person – so be quick, call the MOW office and reserve yours soon. If you, or someone you know or care for, may like to try our home delivered meals, or if you would just like to have a look at our menu, please contact either Katrina or Denise on 9978 4130 or email meals@mosman.nsw.gov.au 6

WORKING WITH VOLUNTEERS For the past 20 years I have been working with volunteers at Mosman Council, the last 15 as the Volunteers’ Coordinator. During this time I have had the privilege to meet and work with many incredible people who so generously give their time to assist others. Mosman is not only a beautiful suburb to live in, it also has a wonderful community feeling and this is demonstrated by the fact that the volunteer programs run by Council are so enthusiastically supported by the residents; we seldom need to advertise for volunteers as we are contacted regularly by those who wish to contribute by helping others. Over the past 20 years there have been many changes in volunteering, especially to the regulations surrounding the volunteering process and I am extremely proud that here at Mosman Council we have not only been able to meet the criteria required but we have also tried to make this process as smooth and easy as possible for those applying. Our goal is to provide varied opportunities for those who wish to participate in our volunteer Programs - we want our volunteers to enjoy their experience. Council runs many programs in the community and many of these would not be possible without those wonderful people who give their time and energy to help others. I would like to thank all of you, you do an amazing job and Mosman would be a much poorer place without you. I will miss my Volunteers Coordinator role, it has been very rewarding over the years, but I will still be here working in my role as Carers Program Coordinator, something that I am very passionate about. I look forward to being able to catch up with you soon. Warm regards, Liz Nagel

Mosman Carers Group Mosman Carers Group provides not only information, referrals and support but it enables you to meet others who are caring for a relative or friend who has an illness or a disability. The support and understanding Carers give to one another is invaluable, they understand only too well that although you love and care for the person who is unwell you can often feel lonely, frustrated and downright fed up ! This doesn’t make you less of a Carer, just human! The Mosman Carers Group meets every Wednesday morning from 10am until 12pm in the Harnett Room at Mosman Council. You don’t have to attend every week just come whenever you are able, you can even arrive late and leave early! There are regular guest speakers providing a wealth of information on a range of subjects, morning teas and every few months a full day bus trip. The support, information, friendship and understanding has made a great difference to many Carers as they say that attending the meetings has helped enormously and they don’t feel so alone or overwhelmed. For more information about the Mosman Carers Group please contact Liz Nagel, Carers Program Coordinator on 99784089 or l.nagel@mosman.nsw.gov.au As the festive season will soon be here I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Carers and their families a wonderful Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. I hope you have the chance to relax over the holiday break and look forward to seeing you in 2015. Warm regards Liz

Adventures by Bus by Di McK The 55+ bus trip to Swansea Our bus left Mosman under blue skies, heading off to the Lake District of NSW - Tuggerah, Budgewoi, Munmorah, Colongra, Mannering and Macquarie Lakes. The road led through the leafy north shore with many trees dressed in autumn tones of gold and red. Onto the Sydney/Newcastle freeway, passing between cut sections of hillside showing the local geology. Down across the Hawkesbury, past the turn off to Gosford, Wyong and Tuggerah Lake, the bus then turned onto the Pacific Highway at the first stop, Budgewoi. Tuggerah Lake feeds into Lake Budgewoi between Gorokan and Toukley and then Lake Budgewoi is subsequently fed into Lake Munmorah via the Budgewoi Creek by which the town now stands. Down at MacKenzie Park, a notice states Lake Munmorah’s seabed is covered with sea grass, which is food, shelter, breeding ground and nursery for the fish in this area, including the yellow Bream which is indigenous to Australia. Looking across the Lake, one could see the tall stacks of the Delta State Electricity Power Station which lies by the Endeavour Colliery. Back on the bus we continue on the Pacific Highway between Lakes on the left and the sea but tall trees and scrub obliterated both, until the bus turned on to the scenic drive above Caves Beach with its golden road and rolling surf. The beach is named after the sea caves at the southern end of the beach where children like to explore the rock pools at low tide. The bus then turned inland to stop in front of the Swansea RSL where a number of the group enjoyed a delectable luncheon.

Coach Builders and Farriers Picnic, Swansea, NSW, 24 March 1898 29

The Swansea Township is situated by the Swansea Channel which links Lake Macquarie to the sea. The Pacific Highway crosses the Channel from the main street northward, by a bridge. Initially, the crossing was made by row boats with the horse swimming behind: fare was 6 pennies! The first bridge was built in 1871, the second in 1886 and the present one in 1955. Awabah tribes were indigenous to the area. In 1972 an archeological excavation found an old campsite which when carbon dated registered 7,800 years old! One of the first land grants was made in 1833. In the 1850’s the first Chinese arrived and their cured fish went as far afield as the Goldfields and Sydney. Boat building started in the 1860’s. By 1865 there was 65 people in the area – 40 Chinese, 10 Aboriginals and 15 Europeans. In 1887 the name of the area was changed from Pelican Flats to Swansea as Mr F.R. Talbot said this area reminded him of Swansea in Glamorganshire, Wales, UK. The aboriginal name was Galgabba. Partaking lunch by the Swansea Channel, which lies 2 klms from the sea and is the out-pouring area from Lake Macquarie, one of Australia’s largest salt water lakes (twice the size of Sydney Harbour). I chatted with the local scuba diver who told me that the Channel had a sandy bottom filled with a large variety of fish and a few seahorses. On inquiring about the turn of the tide, I was told all divers need be ashore by then as the exodus of waters is very great, quite dangerous. A group of children stopped to proudly show me their catch for the day. Looking east to the sea (2kms away), I beheld a tranquil scene of two stationary yachts on a flat sea, a speed boat and two jet skiers making waves, and, looking back up the channel, a number of canoes with fishermen and dangling lines. The sun had gone behind the clouds, lunch was over and the group were happy to enter the bus for the return journey to Sydney after an enjoyable trip north!
