From the Editor’s Desk Dear Readers, Welcome back to this new edition of the Over 55s newsletter for January, February and March 2014! We would like to wish our readers and their families an amazing and prosperous new year, and welcome you back to our Centre in 2014 for more services and activities. The programs are changing slightly; make sure you have a look at the weekly planning (page 35) at the end of this newsletter. As an example, Healthy Lifestyle is starting a Yoga class at the Center. Why not begin the New Year with some fun exercising? All the regular activities will be back; Table Tennis, card games, U3A, computer classes… and much more. And we will of course continue supporting you this year through direct services such as Meals On Wheels, Community Transport and Social Support. The restaurant is back again with many great lunches. Join us on 31January for the Australia Day Theme Lunch, it be will fantastic. Mary has organized some great entertainment and the food will be tantalizing and piquant as always! Check out the full list for our 2014 Themed lunches on page 16. The Community Restaurant operates every Tuesday and Friday, also don’t forget the first Tuesday of the month is “Cheap Tuesday” - lunch for $7.00, so come along and enjoy lunch with us this year. We are also listing all the new movies planned for 2014 check out page 26, and the Diary of Events has all the important dates for the next 3 months! Please note that there are a few changes around the center this year, the official opening time is 9am and the only access will be via the doors of the main hall. There will not be direct access to the offices, so please make sure you call us to make an appointment if you need direct assistance. We have a lot of exciting things coming up this year, there is a complete revamping of the computer programs, and we will welcome new activities. We wish you all a very happy New Year for 2014 and are all looking forward to having you at the Centre. 3
Community Restaurant: NEWS... A warm welcome to 2014 from the Community Restaurant. We have another wonderful year planned in the Restaurant and all staff and volunteers are full of enthusiasm and rearing to go!!! The last few special lunches for 2013 were a huge success! Unfortunately for a lot of our regular customers, they were booked out very quickly and there were quite a few disappointed people. My sincere apologies for this, I dislike it when our regular customers miss out, but I guess it's a gentle reminder to BOOK IN nice and early for those special lunches!! We have a great lineup this year, starting with a lunch to celebrate Australia Day on Friday 31 January. I have found a new entertainer, so please come along and join in a good sing-a-long and remember to book your seat and bring some friends!! Our second special Theme Lunch for the year is a Chinese Banquet to celebrate Chinese New Year in February. It is the Year of the Horse! This lunch is on Friday 28 February. I would encourage you to dress up for the Theme Lunches if you feel like it! eg; wear an Akubra hat or an Australian cap for Australia Day, or your best Chinese pajamas for the Chinese Lunch! In March we have Seniors Week and, as usual, we will celebrate with a Cocktail Party. This is on Tuesday 18 March from 4.00pm - 6.00pm and is complimentary; however you do need to let Olivier know if you're coming! There is no lunch in the Community Restaurant on this day! On Friday 21 March is the Mayor's Lunch, to which I would love you all to come to meet our Mayor, Councillor Peter Abelson. You must book in for this lunch and like our other special lunches, the cost is $12.00. In 2014 we will continue with our "coffee card" system. This means we stamp your card every time you come to lunch and when you have 9 stamps you get a free lunch!!! "Cheap Tuesday" has been a big hit, so this will continue on the first Tuesday of every month. This lunch costs $7.00 for a main course, dessert, juice, tea and coffee, but no soup! The arrangement we have with Mosman High School students was another success of 2013. This will continue on into 2014. The students will come about once a month and entertain with singing, music, art, poetry reading, or just join us for lunch and a chat! The teachers and students love coming to the 4 Community Restaurant and I know you enjoy their company!
Attached to this newsletter is a list of all the special lunches for the year. I hope you and your friends can come to as many of these theme lunches as possible; but don't forget to BOOK IN! Remember to seek out and make welcome any new faces in the Restaurant. We were all new once!!! If there are ever any problems in the Restaurant, if you need extra seating or place settings; or you have any suggestions to help us make it even better, please see Angie, Lilia or myself!! From Mary the Kitchen Fairy Dates for the diary Friday 31st January: Friday 28th February: Tuesday 18th March: Friday 21st March:

Christmas Lunch 2013 – Community Restaurant Everyone enjoyed our joyous annual traditional Christmas Lunch. Carols echoed throughout the Seniors Centre, which inspired some to spontaneously get up and dance! Delicious food and fun was had by all. Thanks for coming. We hope you enjoyed it as much as our wonderful staff did.

Mosman Meals on Wheels would like to wish everyone a happy 2014! We would also like to say a big thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who helped out over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. We were very busy packing and delivering extra meals and, as always, we are very grateful to everyone who offered their help at this hectic time of the year. Once again, our delicious Christmas dinners were hugely popular this year. We were swamped with more than 100 requests for our roast turkey breast, pork and crackling dinners and plum puddings with brandy custard! Over summer, our menu offers a choice of high-quality meals each day as well as fresh salads, sandwiches, soups and desserts. Our fresh, refrigerated meals are delivered directly to your home, ready for you to heat in your oven or microwave when required. Frozen meals are also available for your convenience. Vegetarian, gluten-free and special diets are catered for. Not only are our meals fresh and delicious, they also comply with the Dietary Guidelines for Older Australians. Our menu is regularly reviewed by a dietician.
6
We provide a wide variety of nutritious foods, from the 5 food groups
Our menu offers protein-rich foods every day
Unlike many frozen meals from the supermarket, a broad range of vegetables are included
Our milk-based desserts, including custard and yoghurt, assist with meeting daily calcium requirements
Salt is kept to a minimum in all recipes
The majority of our meals are low in saturated fat. 86% of our meals contain less than 10 grams of fat per 100 grams
If you’re unsure of when you’ll be at home to receive deliveries, why not come to the kitchen and purchase some frozen meals? Simply bring a cool bag to the Meals on Wheels kitchen between 11am and 1pm and you can choose from our extensive frozen selection. If you, or someone you know or care for, may benefit from having homedelivered meals, or if you would just like to have a look at our menu, please contact either Katrina or Denise on 9978 4130. We are a very flexible service, offering both long and short-term assistance. There are no contracts or minimum orders and you can cancel service at any time. We can deliver once, twice or five times a week, so please give us a call to discuss your requirements. Kind regards, Katrina, Denise, Lilia, Elizabeth & Vicki, Meals on Wheels team
Blessing of the Nativity – Seniors Centre People were spilling out of the Seniors Centre to witness the wonderful annual event on 12 December for the Blessing of the Nativity. The audience was treated to the sounds of young children from local schools singing many Christmas carols. Everybody joined in and the Seniors Centre was filled with joy and love. Mayor Peter Abelson lead the Blessing, and now the Nativity scene is displayed in the Civic Centre Mosman Council.

Community Support PLAN AHEAD FOR EVERYONE’S SAKE The latest edition of The Senior News included an article on a familiar topic. We have covered this area in the past but there is now an updated website www.planningaheadtools.com.au which we would like to draw your attention to. The article goes on to encourage NSW people and their aged parents to plan ahead. The NSW Government’s campaign is entitled ‘Get it in Black and White’. Ageing and Disability Services Minister John Ajaka said only 5 per cent of adults clearly understood the three essential documents – wills, powers of attorney and enduring guardianship – which were available to plan ahead in case people could no longer manage their financial affairs or make health and lifestyle decisions. “Research shows people are not prepared for the possibility that something adverse could happen to themselves or their loved ones,” he said. “We like to believe things only happen to other people and that somehow we’re invincible but the truth is we are not and we should all prepare for the future. “Planning for later life is like having an insurance policy in place, except it covers your health and financial requirements and ensures your loved ones are looked after when you are no longer around.” While about 85 per cent of adults with aging parents expect to be involved in some aspect of decision making for their parents, 71 per cent had not discussed how their finances would be managed, 64 per cent had not spoken about what medical or health treatment they would or wouldn’t want, and 58 per cent had not spoken about how their parents wanted their estate distributed after they died.
8
“When someone suffers a sudden illness or loses mental capacity, it is often left to our courts and tribunal to decide who will make decisions about their life,” he said. “It is much better to put plans in place early.” If you would like to discuss this or any other service needs, please make a time to come and see us, phone contact 9978 4119. We hope that everyone enjoyed a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and we look forward to offering our assistance in 2014. Chantal Kerr & Lyn Kelleher Community Support

Mosman Carers Group Caring for Carers It’s our 10th Birthday
February 2014 is a special time for the Mosman Carers Group In 2004 Council responded to the requests and need for a locally based group to assist local Carers and so the Mosman Carers Group was formed. The group meets every Wednesday morning 10am until 12noon in the Harnett Rooms at Mosman Council and provides information, support and referrals in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Over the years many Carers have found that a vital part of the group is the friendship and support Carers give one another, they know only too well the highs and lows, difficulties and frustrations of being a Carer and are able to listen and offer advice, empathy and understanding. Guest speakers weekly discuss a range of subjects ie. Dementia/Alzheimers disease, grief and loss, compassion fatigue, legal issues, relaxation, meditation and many more topics. Monthly support group/gatherings are for Carers to have a chat over a cup of tea. We also offer regular full day bus outings. Carers say they find these outings a wonderful break and valuable respite from their caring role. Yes, there are sometimes tears, but laughter plays a big part at the meetings! The group is an open one, those who attend care for family and or friends with illnesses ranging from Dementia/Alzheimers disease, terminal illness, mental and physical disabilities as well as mental health issues. The weekly and monthly meetings and day trips are not only valuable for information and support but also act as respite, a short break or “time out” for Carers, often vital break for all. If20 you are caring for someone, or you know someone who is, please contact me Liz Nagel on 99784089 for more information.
