Meet the team Katrina Jolley, Food Services ph: 9978 4130 e: meals@mosman.nsw.gov.au Who I am: I moved to Australia 21 years ago but still can't shake this Pommy accent! I have a background in community services, graduating from University with a degree in Sociology. I also owned and ran a busy cafĂŠ in the city. What I do at Mosman: As Food Services Coordinator, I am responsible for Mosman Meals (packaged meals delivery and take-away service) plus overseeing the Community Restaurant. I supervise a small team of fantastic staff and a huge team of amazing volunteers! What I can assist you with: If you are looking for fresh, healthy and nutritious meals, call me or pop into the Mosman Meals kitchen to discuss our take-away, home delivery or restaurant options. I can assist you with any special dietary requirements and refer you to a community dietician if required. You can browse our current menus on Council's website or they can be emailed or mailed to you.

Vicky Kornman, Food Services Assistant ph: 9978 4130 e: meals@mosman.nsw.gov.au Who I am: I started as a Volunteer in the Meals-on-Wheels kitchen 16 years ago when my children first started school. More recently I moved to a part-time position assisting with Mosman Meals four mornings per week. I enjoy working with our team of volunteers that distribute meals throughout Mosman. What I do at Mosman: Each morning starts with receiving fresh food delivered from various professional catering suppliers. I then organise the delivery runs, and pack the Eskies in preparation for the arrival of our great team of delivery volunteers. After that it is following up orders, organising meals for the following day. On Tuesdays and Fridays I help Claire Mullins to keep our busy Community Restaurant running smoothly. What I can assist you with: I love chatting with our volunteers and clients, especially the fast growing number of clients who drop in to pick up their meals. So when you’ve had a busy day out and about, U3A, exercise or bowls drop by to pick up a quick and easy dinner. You can visit us at the Centre or contact us by phone and e-mail. We are also available to provide home visits to discuss your needs and support you to access the most appropriate services available to you. 4

The Community Support Team (Angela, Chantal & Lyn) is your first point of call for linking to the services you need to remain living independently at home as long as possible. We work WITH you to identify your needs, and then make appropriate connections. We can speak to you over the phone, arrange a friendly home visit, or meet you here at our Centre or anywhere in the community you feel comfortable. If you are new to the area, or perhaps you feel you can benefit from knowing more about what is available to you, we are here to answer your questions. We can also help you register with My Aged Care, the Federal Government’s gateway to all aged care needs.

Mosman VIP Membership Become a Mosman Square Seniors’ Centre VIP cardholder We are introducing VIP membership forms for the centre very soon Mosman Square Seniors' Centre is part of Mosman Council. It is a community space providing access to a variety of activities and groups such as exercise classes, movie matinees, special events, music, educational talks, discussion groups and chess, scrabble and Mah-jong groups. Our Mosman Meals, Community Transport, Carers' Group and Volunteers' Office are all based at the Centre. Mosman Meals delivers nutritional meals daily with the help of wonderful volunteers and our popular Community Restaurant is a "must visit" especially on our themed lunch days. Community Transport is available for travel to medical appointments or social events, and runs a variety of popular day trip programs. The award winning Mosman Carers' Group has been running for 11 years and provides weekly support for community members in a caring role. Friendly volunteers supported through our Volunteers' Office visit people in their homes or in residential care as well as helping with environmental, art, library and community projects.

Who can become a VIP? Users of the Seniors' Centre and services are eligible to join the Mosman Square Seniors' Centre VIP Program, if they  are over 65 years  care for someone who has dementia or a disability, or  are under 65 and living with a disability themselves. Becoming a VIP will give you access to special offers, newsletters, a calendar of events and exclusive invitations to special events. The VIP Program Form have been developed so we can improve our planning and service delivery. We also need the information we ask for on the form, on occasions when we need to contact family or carers, for example if someone is taken ill on one of our programs. And, because we receive funding from the Commonwealth Government to provide our services, we need to report back to them about who is using the services. The information we provide to the Commonwealth does not identify individuals as only numbers are reported.

Are you eligible to become a VIP? Speak to our friendly staff to find out more and sign up today! 7

Do Brain Games Reduce Alzheimer's Risk? Could brain games lower your risk of Alzheimer's disease? Preliminary research presented at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference in Toronto suggests the answer is yes. Experts at the University of South Florida re-analysed existing data and found people who played brain games that dealt with speed training had a reduced risk of getting Alzheimer's disease. Mayo Clinic neurologist Dr. Ronald Petersen visited Australia recently to promote his research. He spoke about importance of brain games, early screening and prevention at Alzheimer's Australia Dementia Month Awareness Symposium at the NSW Parliament House. Two of our staff had a pleasure in attending Dr. Petersen's lecture and took some notes on importance of memory games.

Here are three BRAIN GYM APPS you might like to explore

Lumosity Brain Training

Challenge your Memory, Attention, and more. Games adapt to your unique performances helping you stay challenged in a wide variety of cognitive tasks.

BrainHQ

CogniFit Brain Fitness

All Apps are available through iTunes and Google Play for your smartphone devices. Ask our friendly staff to show you how to add them when you are next in at the Centre.

COMMUNITY CARERSTRANSPORT PROGRAM

Be active, active, healthy healthy and and engaged engaged Be

The caring role can be physically and emotionally draining and many carers put their own needs last. Carers may also find that due to their caring role they need to develop new skills and knowledge, and at times may often feel alone or unsupported. This can be overwhelming. It is important that carers make their own wellbeing a priority and keep healthy, both mentally and physically. One way to do this is to come along to the Mosman Carers Group. The group provides ongoing support, information, advice and assistance for carers, and the opportunity to talk things over with others in a similar situation is invaluable. If you are a carer we strongly urge you to come along. You will find the experience very valuable. The group meets every Wednesday morning from 10am to 12pm in the Harnett Room at Mosman Council. The meetings are relaxed and friendly and there are regular guest speakers covering a range of topics. Save the date: 26 October Dementia & Memory Loss Informative evening for family and friends!
