health information

What is Sarcopenia? As we get older, our bodies undergo many natural changes that impact mobility, muscular, skeletal and cardiovascular health, not the least of which is age-related muscle loss, or sarcopenia. While even the most physically fit individuals are not immune to sarcopenia’s various effects on the body, physical activity can mitigate the degenerative process. Symptoms and Causes of Sarcopenia • Decrease in the body’s ability to convert protein into energy • Reduction in physical activity due to weakness or loss of stamina • Difficulty climbing stairs and keeping balance • Muscle atrophy and hypoplasia (decrease in muscle size/number of muscle fibers) The greater the reserve of muscle mass, the longer it will be before sarcopenia has the potential to impair functionality. Thus, it’s imperative to maintain a daily fitness and health regimen to help repair and rebuild your muscle mass. Here are some tips: Intake Proper Nutrients As you age, your body requires less calories, but has other nutritional needs. A balanced diet for older adults should include a variety of lean protein (including plant based sources like soy products), anti-inflammatory foods like nuts, broccoli, spinach, and blueberries, and plenty of calcium from dairy products and their alternatives. It’s also key to hydrate by drinking water throughout the day. Increase Reps You don’t have to overexert yourself by lifting heavy weights. It’s actually more beneficial to increase repetitions instead of weight, and perform an exercise until your muscles feel tired. Take Time to Recover Research suggests that an older person’s muscles recover slowly after a workout. This means that older adults run the risk of overtraining if they aren’t spacing out

their workouts with rest days in between. Engage in active recovery activities such as walking, yoga, stretching, and foam rolling. Try Something New Participating in different types of workouts or fitness classes is a good way to stay engaged with an active aging lifestyle. Attending activities at your local seniors center is also a great way to meet like-minded people to socialize and work out with. In short, proper nutrition and fitness are considered some of the best remedies available for degenerative muscle loss associated with age. Though the tips above are intended as a resource for those looking to pursue a healthier lifestyle, it’s always best to consult a doctor before starting any new fitness program.

WELLNESS EXERCISES FOR HOME Here are three low-impact exercises to improve balance, strength and range of motion. Please consider your fitness level and consult your doctor or allied health professional before commencing any new exercises.

1.

Sit to stand in chair: Place a sturdy chair against a wall. Sit in the chair. Stand up straight and tall. Sit back down, controlling the sit (do not fall into chair). Use your hands if you need to. Your aim is to be able to do this confidently without using your hands.

Calf raises: Stand behind a chair or bench and hold it with two hands. Standing straight, lift heels off the ground. Lower heels back to the ground.

2.

3.

Wall or bench push-ups: Place hands on the wall or bench, shoulder width apart. Lower yourself towards the wall/bench then push yourself away. Lower your whole body and keep your body straight. Copyright Š integratedliving 2016

your care team Social isolation contributes to ill-health In a recent study, older adults reported that physical health and more social contact were the two elements that would help improve their quality of life. Researchers have also determined that social isolation is a major contributing factor in serious ill-health for older adults. It seems that studies are now proving what most people intuitively know: spending time with other people does you a world of good! At Mosman Community Care we work hard to create activities and outings that will not just stimulate you mentally but help you to get fit. We also want you to engage more with your community and spend time getting to know other like-minded people from Mosman. For more information on how we can assist you to become more engaged with your community, please call the CARE team on 9978 4119.

art for fine motor skills

walking group

People at our Care CafĂŠ Sketch Class have been getting creative thanks to our new Art program that was introduced early 2018. Designed for people living with Dementia and their friends, the program helps people maintain fine motor skills, bond with other like-minded people and has seen members create some great works of art for the Centre walls. We hope to hold an exhibition sometime in 2019. If you would like more information on our Art Classes, please call 9978 4119.

For older adults who enjoy the outdoors we have the Low Impact Walking Group led by our Community Care Support Worker, Karen. This group helps people to be confident walking outdoors and is a great opportunity to socialise. Walking Group meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month 10.15am – 2.30pm. We eat lunch together after the walk. Bring your own or pre purchase a sandwich from our Mosman Meals Kitchen. For more information about the Walking Group, please phone 9978 4119.

carers program Happy Birthday to the Carers Group! Mosman Carers Group will be 15 years old in February. During that time many Carers have found that the meetings have provided invaluable support, understanding and information to help them care for a loved one, a relative or friend who has an illness, a disability or Dementia. The group was formed to provide Carers with the opportunity to learn more about the caring role and how to take care of themselves as well as those they are caring for. Most weeks there are guest speakers covering a wide range of subjects ranging from legal information, speakers from Dementia Australia and Carers NSW, to adjusting to the changes the caring role brings to your life and coping with grief and loss. There are also seated Yoga sessions which help you learn to relax and fun sessions such as Art Therapy. We have regular get togethers for morning tea in a local café and full day bus outings for lunch every few months which give the Carers some time out and the chance to relax and enjoy the company of other Carers, the chance to have a laugh and a good old chat; time just for you. A list of the weekly speakers and sessions is sent to Carers so they don’t miss information relevant to their situation, but there is no pressure to attend, just come when you can. So why not come along, there is nothing to lose and everything to gain! The information, support and friendship you get from this group will help with your caring role. If you are caring for someone with an illness, a disability or Dementia please come along to the group. We meet every Wednesday from 10am until 12pm in the Harnett Room at Mosman Council. You don’t have to attend every week, just come when you can. There is no charge and tea and coffee are provided. If you would like to discuss the Carers Program contact Carers Program Coordinator Liz Nagel, on 9978 4089 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

volunteering Meet Robin price:

Volunteer Robin Price

Robin has been volunteering with Mosman Meals (formerly Meals on Wheels) for over 15 years! “Volunteering is simply being part of the community and I have certainly enjoyed my 15 years working with Mosman Council. Being part of the fun Mosman Meals (formerly Meals on Wheels) team certainly enriches my life. This volunteering opportunity has given me many great experiences. I get to see people’s smiling faces and also the sad faces as well. I can remember a lovely lady who sadly passed away 8-9 years ago. Each time I delivered her meal she would give me flowers from her garden or something little to thank us. This incident always made me feel so happy and rewarded. “Our clients are always happy to see us and have a little chat. Sometimes we might be the only people they see all day.” If you would like to be involved with volunteering in Mosman like Robin has been, please give us a call on 9978 4126 or email volunteer@mosman.nsw.gov.au.

the benefits of volunteering Many medical journals and industry reports have documented the benefits of volunteering in recent years. They find that volunteering is one of the best things you can do not just for yourself, but for the wider community as well. The benefits of volunteering are countless. There are social, emotional, physical and even professional perks. Your volunteering will help you to: • Build your community • Reduce loneliness and social isolation • Provide better job prospects • Develop emotional stability and improve self-esteem • Improve overall health and lead to graceful ageing If you are ready to make friends, improve your mental and physical health and develop new skills along the way, why not get in contact with us and start volunteering today!
