THIS IS MISSOURI SOUTHERN IMAGINE THE FUN Just like university students everywhere, you will find times when you need to “blow off some steam.” When you do, you will find that sometimes there is so much going on at Missouri Southern, it is hard to pick and choose. Free activities happen throughout the year: ball games, plays, music concerts, campus-wide picnics, lectures by famous people, intramural sports, and more. The Billingsly Student Center offers pool tables, the campus bookstore, and the ticket office with discount tickets to area concerts, attractions, and professional sporting events. The Campus Activities Board (CAB), a student-run group, plans concerts and special events for the campus. Joplin is also a fun place to live and learn learn.. There are movie theaters, restaurants, and a large shopping mall less than a mile from campus. And if you feel like getting away for a while, Kansas City, Mo. is a 2 1/2 hour drive from Joplin, and Branson and Tulsa, Okla. are less than two hours away. The Four-State Region is also a great place for hiking, fishing, camping, and canoeing.

JOPLIN COMMUNITY Joplin is located in southwest Missouri in the "four states" region encompassing Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Akransas. At the edge of the Ozark Mountain region, Joplin has a current population of 49,024. The daytime population swells to 270,000 while the population within a 40-mile radius of Joplin is 400,000, making it Missouri's fourth largest metropolitan area. Joplin combines the beauty and hospitality of country living, with the convience and commerce of city vitality.

THIS IS MISSOURI SOUTHERN The Mansion remains a tangible testimony to the past as well as the future. Just as it was a Home to the Buchanan and Wallower families before, today it gains new meaning as the Home to all Southern Alumni. After being an integral part of Southern's original 1967 campus, the Mansion remained idle from 1992 to 2006. The Missouri Southern State University Alumni Association created a strategic plan in 2004. One objective was to renovate the Mansion. Alumni staff and board members began raising funds to restore the 4,000 square foot building with a substantial gift from Mary Helen Harutun, restoration efforts began on the exterior of the Mansion. The facade enhancement was completed in 2007. After the exterior work was done the Alumni Association began to concentrate on restoring the interior. Through a most generous gift by Ralph L. Gray, the interior work began in 2009. After five years of planning and fund raising the Ralph L. Gray Alumni Center was dedicated on September 18, 2010.

The center opened in September of 2009. The center provides 71,000 sq. ft. of space for students and includes three multi-purpose hardwood courts, two aerobic workout rooms, spacious and modern locker rooms, two weight and cardio exercise areas are with more than 100 pieces of equipment combined, and a 10-lap mile elevated walking/jogging track. The beautiful building is constructed with many windows which allow for inspiring views of MSSU's Bodon Soccer field and the biology pond. Beimdiek Recreation Center is open to all students and faculty/staff/ alumni/university affilates with a membership.

The newly completed 85,000 square foot Health Sciences Building provides a state-of-the-art training facility for healthcare professionals. The Health Sciences building houses programs in Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Kinesiology, Medical Technology, Psychology, Radiologic Technology and Respiratory Therapy. The building was funded from the Lewis & Clark Discovery Initiative.

The Lions also had 133 student-athletes achieve a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher, with 64 carrying a 3.5 or higher and 10 with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Southern had an overall athletic department GPA

Athletic Excellence In Search of Excellence

It’s exciting to be a part of Missouri Southern athletics, both as a participant and as a fan. The Missouri Southern Lions have been Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Champions in football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and tennis. The football team has been a winner, claiming the NAIA Division II National Championship in 1972 and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association title in 1993. The Lions currently have two players on NFL rosters and two playing minor league baseball. The Lions softball team is a frequent participant in regional action, and in 1992 won the NCAA Division II National Championship. The men’s basketball team hosted and won the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament and advanced to the Division II Final Four in 2000, while the baseball team has made numerous trips to the College World Series, finishing second in the nation in 1991. Both MSSU men and women have had national champions in track. In all, Missouri Southern has claimed 44 conference crowns, including 33 since joining the MIAA.

Quality Athletes

Each year Missouri Southern student-athletes are recognized by coaches around the conference as All-MIAA performers, while several also are named to All-America teams. MSSU men and women have been named MIAA Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Yea r and Ken B. Jones Award winners (for outstanding student-athlete in the conference), and have also been National Player of the Year honorees, as well as finalists for national awards such as the Harlon Hill Trophy in football. In 2008 and 2009, the women’s cross country and outdoor track and field teams claimed MIAA titles with the 2009 cross country team finishing third in Division II. The Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country team was ranked the fifth best overall program by the Coaches Association in 2009-10. The men’s cross country championship was the eighth in the previous nine years. During the 2004 season, both the men’s and women’s track and field teams claimed MIAA Indoor Titles, the first in school history. The Southern softball team has appeared in 18 of the last 20 conference tournaments. Men’s basketball has earned 14 straight berths to post season tournament and has an overall record of 193-106 over last eight years. Women’s basketball has gone to the last seven of the last eight conference tourneys and in 2004 had it’s best season since 1996. The golf team was fourth at the regional in 2009.

Solid Students

Of course the primary goal of any institution of higher education is to graduate its students. At Missouri Southern that philosophy is no different. Student-athletes wearing the Green & Gold also get the job done in the classroom. In the 1990s, the Lions boasted a graduation rate of 77.3 percent. MSSU student-athletes also have maintained cumulative team grade-point averages above the 3.0 mark. For their efforts, Southern’s student-athletes are routinely named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll teams, as well as the Academic All-MIAA, Presidential Scholar Athlete, and Academic All-District and All-America squads. In all, more than 50 Lions have been named Academic All-America.

Contributors in the Community

Not only do they perform on the field and in the classroom, but Missouri Southern’s Lions are also involved in the Joplin community. They work with such organizations as the Special Olympics, the Ronald McDonald House, the Boy’s and Girl’s Club, Adopt-A-Street, and the Children’s Miracle Network, and are frequently contacted by schools in the area with requests for special visits. Missouri Southern’s student-athletes are frequently invited to serve as hosts and guest speakers for special events in Joplin and the surrounding communities.

Outstanding Facilities

Of course, to be competitive, teams need quality facilities. Missouri Southern has those. The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center, constructed in 1999 with seating for more than 3,200, contains three gymnasiums, an indoor competition track, an incredible weight room and state-of-the-art sports rehabilitation facilities. In addition, Robert Ellis Young Gymnasium includes courts for basketball, racquetball and volley ball, and a six-lane swimming pool. The surfaces for football and outdoor track & field at Fred G. Hughes Stadium underwent a major renovation in 2003. The football field was given a new, top-of-the-line artificial playing surface and the all-weather track was equipped with a new all-weather surface, upgrading it to a national meet-caliber facility. Other outdoor facilities include lighted tennis courts, several soccer fields, two softball fields and one of the finest cross country courses in the nation. The course hosted regional meets in 1999, 2001 and 2004, 2007, as well as the 1999, 2007 and 2012 NCAA Division II Championships. 2012 MSSU 2012 MSS SSU SU S U Women’s Women’s men’ss Soccer men Soc Soc occer cer Media Media Medi Me d Guide Guide Guid Gu de de

Hal Bodon Pitch

Hal Bodon, the first head soccer coach at MIssouri Southern, posted a career record of 138-74-21 from 1976-87.

Hal Bodon Field: Home of Southern Soccer When Dr. Hal Bodon first introduced soccer at Missouri Southern State College in 1972, he started with phone poles and chicken wires. Bodon, served as a professor of communications for 25 years at Missouri Southern, in addition to his position as head soccer coach. He posted a career record of 138-74-21 from 1976-87, good for a .637 winning percentage. He retired from Missouri Southern in the spring of 1996 and went on to serve as a missionary in Port-au-Prince, Haiti with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The Lions' men downed Bartlesville Wesleyan College 1-0 in the first match on the field officially named for the individual who brought soccer to Missouri Southern. Fittingly, the powers that be at Missouri Southern decided to honor the founder of Missouri Southern soccer, as Missouri Southern’s home pitch was dedicated “Dr. Harold ‘Hal’ Bodon Field” on September 9, 1998. Now the Missouri Southern soccer field is freshly adorned with a scoreboard, sound system, lights, and a chain link fence, thus making it an attractive and picturesque venue that is the home for the Missouri Southern Women's squad. In 1998, then Men's head coach, Geoff VanDeusen started the women's program as a club team and recorded their first win on Hal Bodon Field, a 1-0 victory over Allen County Community College on Oct. 1. Since then the Southern women have gone 51-52-12 (.496) at Bodon Field. In 2005 and 2006 the Lions' posted program bests as they went 9-1-1 in '05 and 7-1-1 in '06 at Hal Bodon Field in route to back-to-back second place finishes in the MIAA, also program highs, and their first NCAA Tournament berth (2006).

starts in the net for the Lions and held the opposition scoreless for the final 227 minutes of the 2004 campaign. She recorded 77 saves and three shutouts in her two years at Southern. Woolard also was a four-year softball athlete and was a finalist for the 2004-05 MSSU Female Athlete of the Year.

Last season saw the Lions start 0-7-1 before they would tie a school record with five straight wins. In that stretch Southern defeated Emporia State 2-1, conference rival Southwest Baptsist 2-1 (2OT), Fort Hays State 2-1 (OT), Washburn 2-0, and Missouri Western 2-0. The win over Washburn marked the second straight year that the Lions have won in Topeka against the Lady Blues. Southern would then win another four straight as the Lions would make their first appearance in the MIAA Post-Season tournament as the number three seed. Missouri Southern would face sixth-seeded SBU and win in the first round 1-0 and go on to play second-seeded Truman. The Lions would use a goal in the final seconds to tie the Bulldogs at 1-1 to force overtime and then defeat Truman 2-1 in OT and advance to play Central Missouri for the tournament championship. In her first year at the helm Woolard led the Lions to a 5-8-5 overall record and tied the school record for ties in the season with five as well as setting a school conference record with the five draws. The 2010 season also saw three streaks broken. The Lions scored four goals in a game for the first time with a 4-1 defeat of Emporia State since a 5-1 defeat of ESU on Oct. 2, 2008 and the 2010 season also saw the winless streak at Washburn University get snapped as the Lions won 2-0. Their last win in Topeka, Kan. was on Sept. 10, 2004, a 1-0 OT win. The final streak broken was a seven year winless draught in Maryville, Mo. as the Lions defeated the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats 2-1 on Oct. 2. Prior to her coaching stint, Woolard enjoyed a solid two-year playing career under former head coach Trevor Wachsman. Woolard made 14

In 2005 Woolard had one of the most productive seasons offensively in Lions history leading the team in batting average (.351), runs (40), hits (61), doubles (9), triples (3), home runs (9), RBIs (37), slugging percentage (.592), and on base percentage (.392). Her nine home runs in that season is still a single-season record for Southern. Woolard also holds a NSCAA State and Regional Goalkeeping Diploma, as well as an NSCAA Advanced Regional diploma. Woolard graduated from Southern in 2005 and holds a Master of Education in Workforce Development Education with an emphasis in Adult Education from the University of Arkansas.

Michelle Dimza Assistant Coach Dimza is in her first season as the assistant soccer coach under Alese Woolard, making the transition from the field to the coaching box after a stellar career at Southern. Michelle started in 69 of her 70 contests for the Lions and recorded six goals with three assists on 86 shots, 39 of which were on goal. Michelle’s 86 career shots ranks her seventh all-time

in Missouri Southern soccer history. She is a three time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and was a two-timeMIAA Scholar Athlete while earning Honorable Mention All-MIAA in 2009. Majored in Pre-Med finishing with a 3.94 GPA, she was a member of Alpha Chi Honors Society, a peer mentor and a biology tutor. Michelle was also named the 2011-12 Outsanding Graduate for Missouri Southern.

2012 Preview After opening the 2011 season 0-7-1, the Lions were able to turn the momentum around during the second half of the year and close the 2011 season with a 9-3 finish. That strong finish vaulted them to within a game of reaching the NCAA Tournament and provides third-year head coach Alese Wolard plenty of motivation for this fall. “That is a huge motivation knowing that, in all reality, we were a game away from the national tournament.” “I have a number of returners on my roster, a lot of them that played quite a bit last year, so for them it is that motivation that I do not really have to do. They know that we are close and we have the talent. They know that we can be there. It is not out of reach for us.” Coming into 2012 as the MIAA preseason number five team in the conference, Wolard feels that is right where her team belongs in the 15-team league, “I was not really surprised to see us there. Definitely with the new teams coming into our conference, with Central Oklahoma being the only team ranked and historically a very good team, Northeastern is a very good team as well and so I was not surprised with being number five.” “Definitely with graduating seven players and six starters and one of our leading scorers among those six, for us it is a little added motivation (being predicted number five). They feel like we should have earned a little bit more credit and they know how hard they worked and to not get that recognition kind of stings a little bit, but it gives them a little bit of a fire to say hey this is what we can do.” The Lions welcome a familiar face to the sideline in 2012 in former Lion Michelle Dimza. After finishing up a stellar career in 2011, Dimza returns to the Lions as an assistant coach after a stint with a semi-premier league team in Seattle this year. That experience helped her improve her knowledge of the game and the game from a coaches’ point of view. Wolard knows Dimza brings a lot to the table, “It is a great fit for me this year. She obviously knows the returning players having played with them and she has played at such a high level and her ability. The girls trust her and do not doubt her knowledge.” Despite the loss of seven seniors, Wolard does not have to look far for senior leadership as she returns six seniors to the squad this fall. “They are my steady rock here. A lot of them have played the good majority of the minutes the last few years. The seniors are pretty much the center of my field with Corinne Tebbs and Cortney Sanders being my center back and stopper positions, and then Alicia Vonderheid and Candis Clark being my center-midfielder’s, and then Natascha Lord

and Megan Stueve being my forwards. They are pretty much right down the middle of my field in those critical areas and I expect a lot of them this year and to carry our team. They are going to have to carry the load, they know this is their last chance and they know that for them in the four years that they have been here, this is our best chance we have to reach our goal of making the NCAA Tournament.” Position Breakdown With all but one of the players on the roster expecting to see playing time, Coach Wolard will hope to use a deep bench to keep everybody fresh during the game. Next, we will breakdown each position group and get Coach Wolard’s thoughts. Forwards (2 starters): Between seniors Lord and Stueve, Missouri State transfer Tiffany Laughlin, sophomore Katelyn Roberson and freshman Karley Thomas, Wolard plans to cycle these five players through quite a bit because as Wolard calls it, forward is a “pretty endurance position.” “They got to have a pretty high endurance level, so all of them will see some playing time.” Center Midfielder’s (5 starters): Being the catalysts for the offense, the five midfielders are very important to having a successful attack. “They are very important. Their responsibility is kind of two-fold; they are the bulk of our defense and then the bulk of our offense. I expect them to defend and get behind the ball and make sure it slows the other teams attack, but also be the transition people to get forward. I expect a lot out of my outside midfielders, they are going to be running a lot. My four center midfielders are all very sound technically in seniors Vonderheid, Clark, and freshman Kayla Clark and Hannah Ishmael. We do not have the speed we have had in the last couple of years, so we have got to work through our midfield a little bit more than we have in the past and the team knows that and recognizes that.” Backs/ Defenders (3 starters): With five players expected to see playing at time at this position, Wolard will look to returning second-team All-MIAA senior Corinne Tebbs for leadership. “She is our anchor, has been for the last couple of years.” In addition, the Lions will have senior Cortney Sanders, junior Megan Jensich, sophomore Samantha Zoltanski, and freshman Kimberly Hulse, and Kacie Hulse to add depth to this position. 2012 MSSU 2012 MS SSU S SU I Women’s Wo men’swe men Soccer Soc occer cer Media Media d a Guide Guide de “They are the last line of defense, so feel have

Wanting to prepare her team as well as she can for the rigors of conference play, Wolard makes a point to schedule tough non-conference opponents and this year is no exception. The season kicks off for the Lions with a

very smart group this year. They are very smart soccer players. They get themselves in good positions and do not get beat too often. I am excited to get going and see how it all works together out there.”

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA student-athletes have won 12 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, 149 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and eight for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball and tennis. The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State University and Washburn University became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri State University, Truman State University, and Northwest Missouri State University still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest, Southeast Missouri State University and Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State). Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: the Missouri School of Mines (now University of Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln University in 1970, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1980. School Lindenwood University Missouri Southern State University Missouri Western State University Nebraska-Kearney, University of Northeastern State University

Joined 2012 1989 1989 2012 2012

The 1980s brought the biggest changes in the conference. In 1981, Southwest Missouri State University opted to move to NCAA Division I and the MIAA appointed its first full-time commissioner, Ken Jones, in July. He would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Former Gulf South and Metro commissioner Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year. Bob Boerighter was named commissioner in 2010. Southwest Baptist University brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern State College (now University) and Missouri Western State College (now University) – formerly members of the Central States Intercollegiate Conference – began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season to move on to NCAA Division I, and was replaced by Emporia State University in the 1991-92 season. In August 1991, Judy Willson was hired as the MIAA’s first full-time sports information director. She left in 1994, and was succeeded by Matt Newbery, formerly the assistant sports information director at Pittsburg State. He became the assistant to the commissioner for media relations in 2005. A third full-time staff member was added in 2005, as former Emporia State track and field athlete Natasha Oakes was hired as the assistant to the commissioner for compliance. The current membership of the MIAA is at 15 schools, with the departure of Nebraska Omaha for NCAA Division I in 2011, and the addition of the University of Central Oklahoma, Northeastern State, Lindenwood and the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 2012.
