Old photographs are most people’s prized possessions. However, they are likely to be stored in closets, attics, basements or storage lockers and with time these photographs will deteriorate gradually. Today, you can preserve these precious photos and keep your memories alive with document scanning services. Outsourcing companies that provide these services use advanced techniques to scan and archive old photographs. If you are thinking of scanning and organizing your giant photo collection by yourself, here are some tips on handling the task:  Break down the project If you have more than one box of photographs to scan, take time to decide on which photos should be scanned first -- separate them into piles.  Choose a good scanner When you are choosing a scanner for photos, the most important thing to think about is the purpose for which you are scanning. Choose a scanner that can restore a faded photo to color one and has high scanning resolution. An important thing to remember when scanning photos, especially at high resolution, is to make sure that both the photo and the scanner glass are clean. This will ensure clarity in the scanned images.  Utilize the scanning software’s preview feature Most software has a “Preview” and “Scan” button. With Preview, you can get a rough idea about the scan. This will also help you to fix the scan image to color or gray scale.  Scan multiple photos rather than one at a time It takes about 2 to 3 minute to scan one image but scanning multiple images in one go will save time. Scan the photos by laying them onto a scanner bed with about a quarter inch space separating them.

This will help you to crop the

images into individual ones.  Stick to default colour and dust fix

Some software are best in color correcting and dust fixing and it is best to let the scanning software do its editing as it is precisely engineered to do so. If the picture has a white border, the scanning software may mistake the border color for the true white in the picture. The fix is to adjust the scanning rectangle so it is inside the image area thus cropping out the border.  Do not compromise on resolution Resolution is an important element when it comes to scanning old photos. The ideal resolution for 6x4 inches or smaller is 600 dpi, 400 dpi for 7x5 inches or larger. These settings should be changed if your want to reprint the photo to a larger size.  Save the scanned images in highest JPEG format Scanning software offer various formats for saving your files but it is convenient to save the files in JPEG format as it is much more manageable and lets you to set the compression level to maximum quality or lowest compression.  Do not stack the photographs on top each other Once when scanning is over make sure that you don’t stack your photos on top of each other. One solution is use an index car to separate them into stacks and then place the stacks in a box. This will help keep the photos safe for a longer period of time without color fade or deterioration. Preserve Your Memories Forever Digitized photographs can be easily stored on computers, memory cards, external hard drives and various types of free software.
