GHADA AMER. BORN 1963. EGYPTIAN. LIVES IN NYC. MFA FRANCE
“S?ch by s?ch, a Daughter of Islam Takes on Taboos” wrote the New York Times, in 2001, about Ghada Amer. Born in Egypt, educated in France and living in New York City, Ghada Amer’s interna&onal ar&s&c trajectory is inspiring, fascina&ng and bold. Her extraordinary por^olio of work, that con&nually challenges conven&on and turns tradi&ons on their head, placed Amer as one of the top female ar&sts in the world. Painter, sculptor, garden designer, performer, installa&on ar&st, Ghada Amer’s body of work spans all media – although her abstract expressionist works, embroidered with ero&c mo&fs cons&tute her most famous signature. Amer seeks to depict the major idea of female pleasure, using texts or images that speak of women's sexuality, desire and happiness, subtly exposing the contradic&ons inherent in religious and feminist forms of extremism. Raised in a conserva&ve family, Amer uses art as a tool to rebel and express her inner anxie&es. "I would have died if I didn't make art. It's kind of a salva&on for me." The very act of s&tching cloth reflects the ar&st’s play with popular understandings about feminine work, gender stereotypes and empowerment. The submission of women to the tyranny of domes&c life; the celebra&on of female pleasure; the incomprehensibility of love; and the foolishness of war & violence cons&tute the territory that she explores in her art. About Cairo, she states: "I go there to get angry and make art”. At the same &me, her patrio&sm could make many blush.
