EDITOR’S LETTER H

ello Mum, There shouldn’t be a specific day to celebrate mums or women in general, it should be everyday. Mums definitely have the hardest job in the world. That said, I do know that my mum cherishes her Mother’s Day card and flowers. To all mums out there, your children do appreciate your efforts, it’s just that they only remember to reward you for everything that goes unnoticed on March 21st. On this special day, enjoy that breakfast in bed, breathe in the scent of those fresh flowers, and save that thoughtful greeting card. It’s all about you this month. Turn to page 46 and treat yourself, your mum, or friends. In the March issue, we take a look at cover star, Elli Kasbi’s career switch, and journey from Sweden to Dubai (page 20). If your child has started mingling with kids at nursery and you find yourself scheduling playdates, read this (page 24) and this important letter about vaccines (page 36). New mums and those about to become parents again, make sure you are up-to-date with your vaccines too (page 38). This issue also focuses on new schools and nurseries, for those looking to find the right educational institute for their children (page 30). Since the weather is still amazing, and we’re hoping the cool breeze is here to stay, head out to Hatta and enjoy the great outdoors (page 58) or book a staycation at this renowned hotel (page 60). The usual hotspots to visit (page 53), stores to shop at (page 49) and spa treatments to try (page 48) will ensure you have an exciting month ahead.

Happy reading!

This month, I’m giving my home a warm and cosy vibe with this Amber and Vetiver soy wax candle from Maisey Candles Collection. WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE

Expecting About to become a mother for the first time? Here’s an honest month-by-month experience from a gorgeous mum-to-be September

It was our fifth wedding anniversary and we had invited our big Indian family to celebrate. I felt unusual the whole day and could not understand why. My husband and I decided not to cook and order instead a mix of Chinese and Thai food for the night – my favorite food (then)! By 9pm the house was filled with guests, laughter and music and I still did not feel like myself. I blamed it on my delayed period (a common occurring!). A voice kept asking me ‘Are you pregnant?’ but I kept nudging it off. We continued the celebration and weirdly I had a sudden resentment towards my favorite Thai Green Curry and jasmine rice. I went to bed that night joking to my husband that I might be pregnant. The next day, I continued to feel sick and less energetic. I convinced myself that a game of badminton with my friends would lift my spirit. I was wrong. I decided to take a home pregnancy kit the following morning and to my shock (at 5am!), there were two red lines on the stick! I jumped at once and opened the spare kit to try again. That turned out positive too. I woke my snoring husband out of bed and told him ‘We are pregnant!’. My husband has always wanted to start a family and was more excited than me. The first month flew by getting my blood tests, transvaginal ultrasound and of course breaking the news to our parents. There is nothing like seeing parents finding out they are becoming grandparents.

October

Jinith Joy

Senior PR Account Manager at AllDetails Middle East 14 | MARCH 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

My career is a priority, so I had to tell my (absolutely loving) boss I was pregnant. I was not sure how she would handle the news. The first question she asked me was ‘you are going to come back right?’ To which I replied, ‘Of course! what else would I do at home?’ Most pregnant women do not announce their pregnancy until they complete three months. In my case, I told all my closest friends and family

within weeks of finding out – I was way too excited! This came with a lot of advice “do not eat papaya, do not eat pineapple, don’t wear heels, avoid sushi (one of my few cravings!), drink a lot of milk, so on and so forth.” I began preparation for the unknown from downloading the movie ‘What to expect’ and BabyCenter mobile apps to get a hold of pregnancy books (from my mommy friends). I strongly recommend getting ‘What to expect when you are expecting’ by Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel, especially if you are a first-time mum. The book highlights what to expect month by month and you will be able to relate to 70 per cent of what is written in it.

November

Being pampered comes with being pregnant. I had my mother-law visiting this month to pamper me with delicious homemade food. I was showered with healthy food, fruits and greens. I remember feeling a lot more fatigued than normal, especially after a long day at work. So I hired help once a week for household cleaning, which was relieving. Contrary to what I was told, I did not have any crazy cravings. I did prefer savoury over sweet but nothing unusual. I was also one of those blessed women who did not have any morning sickness. The only pregnancy symptom I had during this time were bleeding gums for which my doctor prescribed folic acid and recommended to discontinue the use of my electric toothbrush. By this time, my husband and I were super excited yet worried at the same time. Your maternal instincts are on a high, making you emotional all the time. There is always that fear in your heart that something may go wrong. We had our first big scan – the Nuchal Translucency Scan. This is a prenatal screening to detect cardiovascular abnormalities in the fetus. This comes with a double marker test to reconfirm. We were worried until the reports came clear.

December

My favorite time of the year. The city is filled with the holiday spirit, festive celebrations

and it truly is the best time to be pregnant. I took some time off work to spend time with my extended family. I also decided to get some maternity pants this month and some tank-tops to show off my bump. I remember spending a lot of time googling things I did not know, which always caused me to worry. I had a big list of questions for my doctor “I have a family history of diabetics and high blood sugar; would this affect my baby? And my husband is diabetic, does this matter?” My doctor was patient enough to answer every question and this is what is important when choosing a doctor, especially first-time moms. At 20 weeks (which happened to be Christmas Day), I had my second biggest scan, the Anomaly scan, which takes a closer look at the baby and the womb. This is also when you find out the gender of the baby. I took my entire family so that we could all find out for ourselves. To our surprise, the umbilical cord was coiled up near the private area! As a result, we did not find out the gender. I also received my first Tetanus Shot this month – painful indeed. It is very important to watch what you eat especially sugar. Walking is also strongly recommended.I entered my second trimester feeling excited and filled with energy.

January

January happened to be the first time I felt the baby kick at 26 weeks. The truth is that until this moment, you are always worried if the baby is okay. This is the moment when you start believing that there is a little thing growing inside you. I decided to pamper myself this month with a pregnancy massage at Tips & Toes. These treatments are provided by trained masseuses with utmost care and patience. I strongly recommend it.

February

Everyone tells you that second trimester is the best time and that is indeed the truth. My bump was quite visible at this point which resulted in smiles from strangers and some even asking when I was due and if I knew the gender. I strongly recommend researching about prenatal classes happening across the city. This is a great way to meet other

expecting mums. I had the opportunity to attend a couple of prenatal classes at my Aster Hospital, and an open event hosted by Pregnancy Arabia. Such sessions are not just informative but also helps to get introduced to maternity brands and baby products.

It is funny when your pregnancy app states that your baby is the size of a cabbage but when in reality your bump looks like a watermelon. At this point, my speed of walking reduced drastically, my one-anda-half-year-old nephew walks faster. My second trimester has been amazing so far. Strangers offer to carry your bags, colleagues bring homemade food for you, and your husband offers to cook for you! I thought I would never say this, but I love being pregnant.

organize my day. I then head to the gym which helps to give me the energy and strength to complete my daily tasks. After spending an hour at the gym, I get ready for the day ahead.

9:00 AM

Not everyone likes to be a morning person, but I really like waking up early. It helps me to focus and get set for the day ahead. I then wake up my three kids aged 2,4 and 6; feed them breakfast and drop them off to school at 7.00 AM. Any mother will tell you this is the hardest part of the day. They don’t just spring out of bed, they tend to snooze, so getting them ready and off to school requires a lot of cajoling and love.

Founder & Creative Director, Piece of You

As I run my own personalized jewellery business ‘Piece of You,” I constantly receive requests for new designs. I go through my emails, attend meetings and visit the factory and supervise the production of my jewellery designs. I get personally involved in my business. I have a conversation with my clients to understand which favourite moment of their life they would like to celebrate through a jewellery keepsake. Some people want to create a pendant with their children or spouse’s name, others may want a ring with their loved one’s initials engraved. Once I understand their requirements, I design the piece myself and send to them for approval. The final design is then sent to my factory in Dubai for production. Once the jewellery is ready, I lovingly wrap it myself and arrange for delivery to my client. I feel happy and satisfied with a job well done!

12:01-12:30 PM After dropping them off to school, I have my only me-time of the day. I use this time to have my breakfast, check my emails and 16 | MARCH 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

It is nice to relive your childhood as we play and read together. I always try to keep track of their school performance to make sure they are up-to-date. When my husband comes home, we play family fun games such as uno, bingo and jenga.

3:16-4:15 PM

It is the children’s downtime and it is also time for me to spend some more time at work. I reply to client and supplier emails and work on creative designs that I share with clients for their approval.

Kids’ dinner time. I make sure they eat healthy. They have homemade meals three times a day, with lunch usually being vegetarian and dinners include proteins like chicken or meat. This is followed by pyjama and bed time, with endless story telling before they sleep peacefully.

It is bedtime for mommy! A well-rested mom and well rested kids are the key to managing both roles well. It is super important to accept and understand that you need help, as in general, moms want to do it all which is humanly impossible, so accept help and do the best to fulfill both the roles you have taken on! As a mumpreneur, I try to be organized so that I can enjoy both roles.

MY LITTLE

BlackBook Meghna Dixit,

Founder of lovelifelittleone.com, and mum to a 4-year-old girl Favourite coffee-shop (child-friendly spot) I live in JBR, so there are lots of good places to have coffee around me in JBR, JLT and Dubai Marina. The ones I like though are Tub of Butter, Café Bateel and the Lime Tree Cafe.

Top three play areas your child loves We Rock the Spectrum, Dig it at Springs Souk and Fun City at Ibn Batuta Mall.

When I relax, I head to… The Yin Yang Spa in JBR for a deep tissue massage, Glamstreet Salon for a blow-dry, or an Instagram-worthy coffee shop with my girl friend for some much needed girl talk.

Edutainment apps and shows your child loves? Décor store you love I love Pottery Barn, but I also think Ikea and Home Center have some value-for-money furniture and items for the kid’s room.

My last date-night was at…

Reel Cinemas. We watched Glass and headed off to Bambooda, Roda Al Bustan for dinner soon after.

My daughter learnt a lot from the Kidloland English and Maths app, both of which I reviewed on the website. On Netflix, my daughter loves, Ben & Holly. We also watch Masha & Bear. For activities, I highly recommend the “My Discovery Lab” subscription box for kids. My daughter and I love doing fun and easy science experiments, as it provides a good fun activity and bonding time for the family and friends.

Favourite fashion store for kids clothing I love buying clothes from small businesses, especially handmade pieces for my daughter. My two top favorites are Vays Kingdom and Roots & wings clothing. That said, I also shop at The Children’s place, H&M kids, Babyshop and Gap kids.

Advice for expecting moms A book I’m reading to my child is... The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss!

18 | MARCH 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Ask for help! Whether you need it from your lactation consultant, your husband, that nice lady in the grocery store, or the co-worker in your office, there is no shame in asking for help. Even a superwoman can’t raise a baby true to published books without some help, so cut yourself some slack and know that you are going to be a great mom, and your child will show you how.

We provide newborn and toddler care in the comfort of your own home, for any length of time and at any time of day or night. Each of our Babycare assistants holds a degree in Midwifery / a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and is trained in Pediatric First Aid and certified by Highfield U.K. Our private drivers pick up and drop off the Babycare assistants to and from duty.

Roles

Mother-of-two girls, Founder of Elli Junior, and investor at Kidz App, there’s plenty on Elli Kasbi’s plate at the moment. Here she tells us her recipe for success

B

orn in Iran, Elli Kasbi, founder of Elli Junior (e-commerce site and kidswear retail store) left the country when she was a baby, due to the war, and was raised in Sweden, Stockholm – a place that will forever be home. “Sweden is a beautiful country with lots of great advantages, but the winter is very dark and depressing and we wanted to enjoy our life to the fullest. My husband sold his business in Sweden and I resigned from my job that I loved. I worked for one of the biggest banks in city of Stockholm and had the best manager and colleagues,” says Elli, who has a masters in computer science and a bachelor’s degree in finance. Her move to the UAE in 2014, was a spontaneous one as Elli and her husband were looking to try something new. “None of us had a job or amazing packages when we left our beautiful life and great jobs in Sweden to try our luck in Dubai. At the time, my youngest was six-months old,” she says. However, when you have that feeling in your gut, you listen to it. And that’s exactly what MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | MARCH 2019 | 21

they did. “We had a tough time until we settled and found jobs, since Dubai isn’t the cheapest country to live in.” After months of not being able to find a flexible job, Elli made the career switch to a media role. “Two years on, I felt that I had built enough experience to start my own business and as I have always been a huge fan of the Swedish brand Elodie Details, I decided to bring this brand to the GCC region and that’s how Elli Junior started in the retail market,” she tells us of her success. As for taking the chance and moving out here, Elli says she now calls Dubai home, and absolutely loves it. “I love the weather, the opportunities, the diversity of all nationalities and most of all I love the beach.” Her venture, ellijunior.com operates as the exclusive online distributor for some of the best Swedish brands: Elodie Details, JaBDaBaDo and Kids Concept. Some of the brands are stocked at high-end shops around the GCC too, and she just opened her first retail store in AbuDhabi at Yas Mall, inside House of Fraser. “My dream is to one day develop my own collection under the Elli Junior brand. We have already started with our personalised posters, but more items will be developed shortly.” The start of 2019 saw Elli expanding her portfolio to now include Kidzapp, the ultimate digital guide to familyfriendly activities and events in the UAE. “I believe in timings and when an opportunity arises, you can’t turn your back on it,” she says. Elli found herself investing in Kidzapp as she saw a huge potential, since it’s a great platform for making family life easier. “I have the right background to make the app an even bigger success. I think a technology-based business is the future and I always wanted to have an app. I’m super excited about this new partnership.” Elli currently has a lot on her plate, from being a partner for the app, to her own venture. But she couldn’t be happier with her decisions. “It’s all about prioritizing and time management. I love running my own business because I get

drops them off, and heads to the gym at 8 or 9am (two to three times a week), It’s chock-a-block with meetings until 2pm, school pick-ups at 3pm and extracurricular activities for the kids while mum works. She spends the most time with them at home, after which it’s back to admin work from 8pm until midnight. “That’s just a regular day,” she tells me while giggling. What’s the key to perfect balance? “Separating your work life from your personal life is crucial if you want to be both successful and spend time with your family and friends. It’s all about prioritising. Its tough and I’m still trying to get better at this.” As we chat about the kids, Elli mentions she never had any help with the children. “I have cleaning help, but never a nanny. I believe that I need to form them, and I don’t trust a nanny, so this makes it even harder. But with good time management and focusing on things that are important, it is manageable,” she says. Her kids have become accustomed to her lifestyle, as she takes them everywhere, from client meetings to the printers, and the bank. Lucky for her, they are very wellbehaved children.

to enjoy more time with my girls and its important for me to be with them when they are small,” says the mother of two. “They will grow fast and go their own way and follow their own dreams, just the way I did,” she says thinking ahead. But even though Elli makes it look easy, she says it is difficult to balance work and home life. “Relationships, health and hobbies are often overshadowed by long hours and endless stress.

Its hard and I need to get better at it, but I run like a headless chicken from back-to-back meetings while they are at school,” she says being absolutely honest about her situation. Elli finds herself being the most productive when they are asleep, and confirms most mums would agree. The busy mum’s day begins at 6am, when she prepares the kids for school,

Elli calmly adds in, “we only live once, it’s so important to do what makes you happy. Spend time with people that give you positive energy. You can do anything you want if you work hard and don’t give up.” This happens to be the motto she lives by too. After hearing about her successful ventures, and how the young mum followed her dream, I had to find out if she had any helpful tips for other mums. “Follow your dreams. Work with things you love, and you will be successful. Just be focused, have a goal and be prepared to work hard. Nothing is impossible. At the same time, it’s okay to just enjoy time with your baby and take a break from your carrier, you will have time later, but your baby won’t be a baby forever,” she ends our chat on a light, hearty note. Surviving Your

Child’s Playdates

Carla Buck, Expert on Child Behavior at Play:Date (an app for your little one’s social circle) and Founder at Warrior Brain shares essential tips for mums 24 | MARCH 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

With the weather being enjoyable again in Dubai, there is always something to do outdoors. Whether it’s a meet up with another family at the beach, or a play date in your own home, your child is bouncing off the walls with excitement. That is, until the fighting starts, and you hear the usual, “he/she doesn’t want to play with me, or he/she doesn’t want to do this or that,” fight amongst siblings. As a mother, your job description includes many, many things. Not excluding a referee, a mediator and a conflict resolver. When you know you have a play date coming up for your child, here’s what you can do to prepare: Keep the play dates short and sweet. Your child won’t feel overwhelmed and his/her friend will

have such a fun time in a short period of time, they’ll both be asking for more. Everyone leaves on a high note (including you!) and it won’t take long for everyone to be itching for the next one. After the play date, take a moment to talk to your child about it. Ask them what their favourite part was? What made them feel like they were a good friend? What made them think they could be a better friend? Why? Having this conversation with your child will help you apprehend your child’s understanding of empathy and how comfortable they are in making new friends. It’s a great opportunity for you to encouragingly reward and praise positive behaviour. And you can let

your child know that their social life is important to you. It's important to be accessible and get involved only when asked. Remember, it’s your child that is socializing, learning about empathy, and how to get along in society. Not you! Be in the background. Prepare some fun snacks and be ready to listen when they ask you to. Surviving play dates does not always have to end up with you and the dog hiding in your bedroom. Play dates are likely to become your child’s everyday life. Much like traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road, you may as well accept it and start making the most of it. I mean come on… you, your child and a few of their friends - what could go wrong? MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | MARCH 2019 | 25

TECHNOLOGY AND

THE CLASSROOM The value of technology as a tool to accelerate, enrich or transform learning is a current and future focus for Kings’ Education

The line-up of advanced learning technologies at Kings’ schools across Dubai ranges from robotic and top-drawer virtual reality (VR) kits to iPad-controlled Bluetoothenabled electronics but it’s the innovative application of these technologies that is key to a successful learning framework. Assistant Head Teacher Scott Johnson from Kings’ School Al Barsha shares some examples: “This includes providing support opportunities for students outside of lessons that can’t otherwise be offered through virtual learning environments and using VR in Biology to allow students to gain unique insight into the human body.” According to his colleague and Deputy Head Teacher, Brett Girven, technology is a great tool to use to accelerate, enrich or transform learning, but one that Kings’ only employs where and when appropriate.

Adds Scott: “If technological innovation doesn’t result in significant impact for our students, then it doesn’t belong in our classrooms or curriculum. When educational technology (edtech) is used in our classrooms it is solely to enhance learning

When considering the value of technology as an academic subject, and STEM disciplines in particular, not all schools are on the same page. Says Brett: “At secondary level, a lot of schools are moving away from having technology, or are

“At Kings’ School Al Barsha we are actually expanding our DT block and have invested significantly in technology and DT specifically.” The school is also looking to the future to grow and develop learning and teaching opportunities for both its students and teachers, as Scott explains; “We are also looking at ways to strategically accelerate some of our key principles of teaching and learning through edtech and differentiate Kings’ from other schools. “At leadership level, we consider how teachers can utilise technology to encourage whole school teaching and learning goals. This is where the next level of edtech needs to go – it’s not necessarily about the ‘bells and whistles’ of having the kit, but about how we leverage it to really enhance learning for our students and teaching for our staff.”

The Right Vaccinations for Your Child Dr Elwaseila Hamdoun, MBBS, MSc and Consultant Pediatrician at Dr Sulaiman Alhabib Center – SZR writes an open letter about vaccines

Dear mum, Childhood vaccinations are intended to protect health by training your child’s immune system before encountering potentially dangerous diseases. These routine vaccines, recommended by doctors and health authorities around the world, including Dubai Health Authority, target diseases known to cause great risk to health. Nowadays, we hear some parents question the usefulness of administering vaccines to their children, asking why give immunizations? why the pain and the cost? To help you understand the rationale of use and dispel some myths about vaccines, I have prepared this brief letter. Among the long list of facts about vaccines, there are two which I want you to bear in mind when discussing the role of immunization in maintaining health. First, dangerous and often life-threatening childhood infections have become less commonly seen in our communities because causative microbes do not find unprotected hosts, thanks to vaccines - a concept known to experts in the field as “herd immunity.” Second, the magnitude of the negative and long-lasting health complications that could arise from these diseases highligh the great need for ways of prevention including delivering effective and safe vaccinations. Talking to parents in my clinic overtime, I have come to realize that learning about these immunizable diseases often making it easy for them to appreciate the value of offering vaccines to their children. Let’s walk through a few examples: Diphtheria, Tetanus, and pertussis vaccine Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection. It often starts by involving the throat and narrowing the airway by a thick membrane (covering). This can cause breathing difficulty. It can also involve the heart. Tetanus is another life-threatening infection. It causes tense painful muscle contractions including the face and the jaw (locked jaw). Whooping cough, or pertussis, affects the respiratory system causing repetitive cough. It is potentially a deadly disease in younger children. It is highly contagious. Measles, Mumps, and Rubella vaccine Measles is a known contagious viral infection, while mumps is often remembered by swollen cheeks. It is characterised by a fever, rash, and a runny nose. It can also

36 | MARCH 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

ADVERTORIAL

progress to pneumonia and cause harm to the nervous system. Furthermore, it has the potential to be a deadly infection. Although it can be mild in some individuals, serious complications like inflammation of brain coverings (meningitis), the brain itself, pancreas, and reproductive tissues may occur. Rubella often presents itself as a rash and fever or with no symptoms. Rubella infection is particularly dangerous during pregnancy due to the known risk of birth (congenital) defects and miscarriage. Hepatitis B vaccine This virus has the potential to infect the liver leading to chronic (long-lasting) inflammation and a damage to the liver. Children, who acquire this infection from their mothers, are particularly at risk of disease progression and complications. There have been a tremendous amount of scientific attention and research aimed to ensure effectiveness and safety of vaccines. Of course, there is no medicine or vaccine pure of side effects. However, significant and proven side effects of vaccines are rarely encountered. Sometimes, symptoms or illness may be co-incidental with the time of vaccination without true relation to it. Lastly, I should remind you that in this era of widespread information via means of internet and social media, it is especially important to stay informed by using reliable sources about vaccines and when seeking medical advice. I strongly encourage you to follow your local health authority guidelines for childhood vaccinations and discuss your questions or concerns directly with your healthcare provider. I hope I have made the case for supporting the use of vaccination for the benefit of your child.

Best Regards,

Dr Elwaseila Hamdoun

The Vaccination Guide Aetna International’s Medical Care Consultant, Dr Aakriti Malla advises new parents on vaccinations they need to take to ensure optimal family health

Cribs, baby clothes and diapers are all essentials for an expecting parent’s checklist. As a new mom, eating correctly, getting extra rest and taking prenatal vitamins are all part of ensuring a healthy baby. But another important precaution to remember are vaccinations for parents, grandparents and anyone else in the family who plans to spend time with the new addition. Newborn babies do not have a fully developed immune system, making them particularly vulnerable to infections. Vaccines are vital for protecting the baby from lifethreatening diseases like pneumonia, measles, meningitis, pertussis and tetanus to name a few. Vaccines are among the safest and most effective preventative measures. Protecting the newborn baby’s health is paramount to all new parents and giving the baby all the recommended vaccines by the age of two is the best way to

protect them from severe childhood diseases later on. When it comes to keeping the baby healthy, one of the fundamental things a new mom and dad can do is make sure they are up-to-date on their vaccinations. When a baby’s parents, family members and caregivers get vaccinated, they form a ‘cocoon’ of disease protection around the newborn baby. If you’re worried about getting vaccinated while pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s worth knowing that there is no risk to the mother or baby when vaccinated with an inactive viral or bacterial vaccine while pregnant. The benefits of vaccinating while pregnant usually outweigh any potential risks. Receiving the MMR, Flu and Pertussis vaccinations while breastfeeding will not affect the mother or the newborn baby. In fact, the antibodies will circulate to newborns through their breast milk protecting them in early life.

38 | MARCH 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Anyone wanting to be close to the baby should be willing to vaccinate themselves against infections that could cause serious harm. Understandably, it is not an easy discussion to have but vaccinations should be discussed as early as possible. If family members refuse to get vaccinated, it is crucial to monitor those close to the newborn until they are able to be adequately vaccinated or are bit older (six months old). Explaining the importance of the newborn baby’s safety and health, emphasizing that vaccinations work to reduce any complications and future illness, will make the conversation an easier one to have with loved ones who may simply be unaware of the potential risks. Vaccinations are safe for all, unless there has been a severe reaction in the past. It may feel more comfortable to have an expert help with the conversation when discussing it with family members. It would be beneficial explaining that a vast majority of serious

infections for newborns can be prevented through the family getting vaccinated. Here, Dr Aakriti Malla, General Practitioner from global health insurance provider, Aetna International, takes us through the key vaccinations parents need to get:

Planning for pregnancy

When planning to conceive and start a family, all vaccines should be up to date to protect the mother and child from serious diseases. Rubella is a contagious disease that can be very dangerous if caught during pregnancy, as it could cause a miscarriage or serious birth defects. MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine is the best protection against Rubella. Most women are vaccinated as a child with the MMR vaccine, but it should be confirmed by a doctor before getting pregnant. If the MMR vaccine is needed, it is advised to avoid becoming pregnant until one month after receiving the MMR

vaccine and the immunity is confirmed by a blood test.

The Flu vaccination

This should be taken by expecting parents, especially moms, as the flu can cause serious complications during pregnancy. With pregnancy-related changes in the immune and respiratory system, there is also an increase in vulnerability to the flu. By getting the Flu vaccine while pregnant, antibodies generated by the vaccine will circulate to the baby and protect the baby in early life. This is crucial as babies are unable to get the Flu vaccine until they are six months old. It is also advisable that all those in close contact with the newborn should be vaccinated with the annual Influenza vaccine at least two weeks before meeting the baby.

Pertussis Vaccination

When one member of the household

has a respiratory illness, others are at risk of getting ill too. Researchers have identified that siblings and parents are the most common source of Whooping Cough (Pertussis) infection in young infants. The highly contagious respiratory tract infection can be detrimental for anyone, but for newborn babies it can be life-threatening. Tdap Vaccination is a combination formula that protects against Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis. The vaccine should be taken in the 3rd trimester of the pregnancy to protect the mother and generate antibodies which will circulate to the growing baby. New parents should encourage everyone in the family to be up-to-date with their Whooping Cough vaccine and anyone who needs it should get it at least two weeks before meeting the new addition to the family. Those who have already received the Whooping Cough booster shot do not need to get vaccinated again.

What do you love the most about motherhood?

How instrumental are you in your Sienna's wardrobe decisions?

Getting a front row seat to their constant growth and development. Every lesson we have taught, every story we have read, every discipline and every hug and kiss has played a part into the people that they are, and the people they will grow to be in the future - it’s incredible to witness. The fact that at the end of the day, I can be there for them like no one else is also a great feeling. I’m their doctor, teacher, boss and best friend. It’s such a magical bond. And of course, the cuddles. All the cuddles.

We love shopping. It’s our bonding time. My daughter has a very strong opinion on what she prefers to wear. She recently coveted some moto boots and for two weeks she wore them with everything. Literally everything. Motherhood is the intricate balance of picking and choosing our battles and that one I let her have. If she wanted to wear them with her summer flower dress, that was her choice. Battles. Plus, they were super cute. For the most part, she likes my style. Even though I do hear “gross” when it comes to my style choices here and there, we are almost always on the same page. For now, I can’t say I’m looking forward to the pre-teen phase of motherhood.

What do you love the most about motherhood?

How instrumental are you in your son’s everyday decisions?

I love seeing my children grow, change and develop into little people with their own personalities. Seeing how similar they are to my husband and myself, and how remarkable it is to have these little “mini me’s” is always a delight. It’s the simplicity and beauty of their love, how it’s so pure and rewarding to have their love and adoration, that’s perhaps one of the most wonderful gifts.

I’m as instrumental as he’ll let me be depending on what we are doing. When it comes to shopping, he usually only wants to wear football kits, but when it comes to smarter outfits and winter clothes for travel, he’s happy for me to help guide him. Now that my son Barney is older, we like to go shopping together. It’s fun and definitely a bonding experience because we are both learning about each other’s taste and style.

What do you love the most about motherhood? The cuddles, hugs and overload of “I love you momma.” Most importantly, I think it’s the feeling of knowing that you mean the world to someone, and the joy of watching your little reflection grow every single day.

Tried & Tested Pamper yourself and enjoy ‘me-time’ at the spa

Hydrafacial and LED mask by Dr. Rita Willow Stream Spa, Fairmont The Palm

To thoroughly deep cleanse your skin, and address all skincare needs with just one facial, look no further than the Hydrafacial treatment to begin with. Tackle everything from fine lines and wrinkles to skin texture, elasticity, tone, congestion, pigmentation and enlarged pores. The treatment begins with a gentle face scrub to get rid of any residue or leftover makeup on your skin and is followed by lymphatic drainage to effectively get rid of unwanted toxins, reduce puffiness, and aid with the removal of dead skin cells. This is followed by a suction pipe that literally pulls out all the gunk from your skin – it’s quite a relaxing feeling as the therapist moves upwards from your neck to your cheeks and forehead.

A serum is applied to target pigmentation and congestion on the T-zone and chin, after which the extraction takes place. This time around, it’s with a stronger suction pipe and you will feel every blackhead being pulled out – gross, but the results are incredible. Once done, the therapist uses the removal tool to extract anything too deep. Skin is cleansed with a warm towel, followed by serum and then the ultra-cool, celebrityloved LED Phototherapy mask is placed on. I began with the yellow setting for ten minutes, to activate toxin elimination, improve decongestion and stimulate lymphodyte production, followed by the green mask to regulate melanin production, reduce pigmentation

and redness. The results are instant. Once serums, eye cream and lip balm is applied on, skin looks hydrated, cleansed – take a look at your nose after – and radiant. Details: Dhs650 per person, contact +971 4 457 3545

Mum's Escape Tips & Toes

Mums are in for a treat at this neighbourhood-friendly spa. Head straight in for a full body massage that begins with pressure placed on various points of the entire body, followed by a quick oil rub to warm the back and legs. The masseuse begins the massage from the feet, pushing down and heading upwards with the palm of her hands and elbows to release tight muscles and strain on the calf. Legs are then folded to work rigorously on the front and back of your thighs. Once the lower half is done, the masseuse gets on top of your body to work on your upper back with full strength. Pressure is placed on the lower back, with all tension pushed upwards and out. To release knots, more oil is placed on the back and the masseuse goes over your shoulder blades with her elbows, using long strokes. The entire process takes 60 minutes, after which a warm towel is placed on your back, making you feel incredibly relaxed. Up next, pick your nail polish and get pampered. Calluses are scrubbed off your feet, before you relax back and enjoy a mini massage on your feet and hands before the manicure and pedicure takes place. To save time, you can have your blow dry done while doing your nails. Make sure you bring along your favourite book, or listen to music while you relax back with this two-hour package. MUM’S COFFEE MORNING WITH BABYSHOP

Over 50 mums gathered at Le Gourmet, Galleries Lafayette, for an interactive coffee morning with Babyshop. Were you there?

We hosted our first Mum’s morning of the season in association with Babyshop. The event saw 50 mums gather with their little ones for a fun morning, where they got to mingle, discover Babyshop’s latest products, and get expert advice from Healthbay’s Counselling Psychologist Dr. Linda Sakr. Mums tuned in to get smart wellbeing tips, as Dr. Sakr focused on the four pillars of Babyshop’s newborn collection: health and wellbeing, feeding, sleep solutions, and travel and safety. Little ones were kept occupied at the colouring station, under the supervision of Babycare Nurses from Elite Babies and Tots, after which they headed off to Le Petit Palais; an indoor playground that resembles a French-style children’s town packed with fun and creative activities. Mums got to participate in a raffle draw too, out of which three winners got their hands on a Babyshop gift voucher, while one mum took home a Mother, Baby and Child magazine annual subscription package. All attendees were gifted a goodie bag packed with a gift voucher, our latest issue and plenty more. 52 | MARCH 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Dining In The City Hotspots ideal for all ages

Weekend dining

RĂœYA DUBAI, GROSVENOR HOUSE

Spend your Saturday afternoon feasting on a concise, and absolutely mouthwatering menu featuring Turkish specialties, as you take in the cool breeze on the terrace of Ruya. The Lazy Saturday brunch menu begins with a spread of fresh olives, apricot jam, a selection of cheese, borek, and pita

bread. For entrĂŠes, take your pick from egg dishes. My dining partner opted for the roasted asparagus with a slow cooked egg, dukkha and moreish nut-brown butter sauce, while I opted for the Menemen (scrambled slow cooked eggs with roasted garlic yoghurt and chilli oil). The venue offers

Date-night

AMMOS, RIXOS PREMIUM JBR Giving you a taste of Greece and making you feel nostalgic of your last holiday on the islands, is this eatery down at JBR. Family-friendly, but equally intimate for a date-night, Ammos offers a white-and-blue colour scheme, plenty of sunlight during the day, cool seaside breeze in the evening, and a Greek menu for an authentic experience. Our meal began with a selection of salads and spreads, featuring tender grilled octopus, deep fried calamari, Melitzanosalat (smoked cold eggplant spread with crispy shallots, pine nuts, parsley served with grilled garlic bread) and of course a Greek salad with fresh Kalamata olives. For mains, my dining partner was in the mood for fish and ordered a whole roasted sea bream fillet that is beautifully presented with the roasted vegetables carved into the meat. I opted for fall-of-the-bone lamb that was quite indulgent and paired beautifully with the accompanying bulgur. For dessert, we shared an incredibly gooey mastiha ice cream with a side of baklava. MANGO TREE THAI BISTRO, HILTON DUBAI - THE WALK Thai-food lovers are in for a treat as this well-loved restaurant re-enters the Dubai market. Previously at Souk Al Bahar Downtown, Mango Tree now features a casual-dining setup with an expansive terrace that can be accessed through the LP level of JBR. Vibrant, vintage posters adorn the walls of the terrace, with the interiors boasting tropical wallpaper, printed yellow and purple lighting fixtures. We sat out on the terrace, which is segregated into a lounge/smoking section and nonsmoking dining area, to enjoy the cool breeze while the weather permits. Our meal began with a ginger ale, mint and mango mocktail to accompany remarkably crispy larb chicken wings, soft and meaty Hua Hin crab cakes with a delectable yellow curry mayo dipping sauce, and a traditional fresh green papaya salad topped with a spicy dressing. All dishes are sharing-style, and since we were dining at a Thai restaurant, we had to order the green curry. Ours was with chicken, eggplant and basil leaves, adding robust flavours to our curry eaten with steamed rice. The Jungle curry shot ribs was another dish we shared, where slow cooked chunks of meat melted off the bone onto accompanying hot garlic flatbread topped with cheese. The pungent red curry is flavoured with kaffir leaves, and if you can handle the spice, this is definitely one to try. To balance the meal and again, put this Thai restaurant to the test, we ordered Phad Thai with chicken. The noodle dish features small pieces of tofu, as well as bean sprouts, peanuts and chilli flakes on the side, that you can mix in to suit your taste. Top with lime juice and tuck into this traditional Thai dish. We were too full to try one of our favourite desserts, sticky rice with mango, but we’ll definitely be going back soon for a fun family day out. TANUKI DUBAI, DUBAI MALL

While shopping around Dubai Mall, you can’t miss the robot at the entrance of this modern Asian eatery. If you’re feeling peckish, stop by, have a chat with the robot – who entertains you with a song or dance – and get a ticket or voucher that can be redeemed at the restaurant. The restaurant sprawls out onto the expansive terrace that boasts views of the Dubai Fountains and Burj Khalifa, but indoors, the all-wood décor is brought to life with cherry blossoms that lend a cosy, intimate vibe. The menu features everything you

would expect from an Asian eatery – sushi, dim sum, and wholesome noodle and rice bowls. Our meal began with the signature Arigato; a soft textured maki roll featuring shrimp, argula, avocado, cucumber and unagi sauce, and Tempura Nori (warm crab mix, avocado, tempura, yuzu and unagi sauce) for those who want a crunchy bite. Since it was cool and windy out on the terrace, we tucked into warm truffle and chicken XLB, and beef dumplings with a warm soup-y broth inside. For mains, my dining partner and I picked a

bowl each, beef teriyaki for me and the yakisoba for him. The mouthwatering beef is drenched in teriyaki sauce, which perfectly complements the steamed rice and vegetables on the plate. The yakisoba on the other hand showcases buckwheat noodles with beef, zucchini, sweet peppers and carrots for crunch and flavour. Both portions are quite generous but there’s always room for dessert. Try the mango mochi for a blissful bite, or the chocolate dumplings for a pocket of hot Nutella. Details: +97152 104 4618

It’s All Happening

IN HATTA

Hatta isn’t just a campsite anymore. The city, just an hour and a half from Dubai, has transformed into a familyfriendly destination with activities for all ages. Here’s why you need to head down there

Twin Zipline

Ever wanted to go ziplining? You and a friend or your child can now try the twin zipline, which offers stunning views of the Hatta Wadi Hub and mountains.

Mountain Cart

This biking experience looks scarier than it is. Head to the top of the mountain, gear up with a helmet and knee-and elbow-pads, and hop onto your bike to ride down the winding slope. The bumpy ride twists and turns as you head for the sandpit below, giving you an instant adrenaline rush.

Zorbing

Change your outfit, head to the top of the hill, and get ready to get drenched as you step into a massive inflated ball filled with tepid water. You can go in groups of three to make your experience all the more hilarious as you roll down, sliding 58 | MARCH 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

and jumping from side to side in the sealed ball.

Hatta Dam

Hatta was once filled with wadis, but ever since the construction of the Wadi Hub, all the water has been pushed into the Dam. Rent a kayak, take a boat out, or step onto a donut float to maneuver through the shimmering waters and mountains. This water-based activity is hands-down one of the most calming experiences as you relax back and listen to the birds chirping and splashes of water.

Freefall and Bag Jump

A giant bag set-up to let you run, jump and allow your body to fall freely. Once you’re done with the bag jump, get fitted with cable ties for the freefall. While it may look slow and easy from down, the tower is actually quite high, and you get the jitters as you are asked to take a step to freely fall down. From age 10+

Other activities to try • Cannon (kind of like a human cannon where you are the one being flung) • Axe Throwing • Archery • Wall Climbing (from age 6+) • Mountain biking (age 6+) • Drop in: Large water slide that tilts up before you land in the water (age 6+) • MTB training with a skilled coach • Log swings • Net Walkaway • Small plunge • Big plunge • Palm course (age 6+)

TRAVEL

MAKE A WEEKEND OUT OF IT

Planning on staying the night? You don’t have to cart your tent along. Hatta is home to plenty of accommodation options with new exciting launches in the pipeline:

Sedr Trailers Resort

The first trailer hotel site in the region is now open, and mums, you don’t have to lug along your amenities, water, and the usual camping gear, as these lavish trailers are fitted with everything you will find in a hotel room. Bathroom, Wifi, TV – check! You don’t even have to give up sleeping on a comfy bed to enjoy camping. Each trailer boasts a sink, hairdryer, mini bar, digital safe, tea and coffee making facilities, and baby cot (upon request). All trailers look out to the gorgeous dam and offer access to the common area equipped with a fire pit and barbeque facilities. Bring your own food as there’s no room service. The trailer accommodates two adults and two kids.

Hatta Damani Lodges Resort

Nestled just over the Hatta Wadi Hub are three distinct types of cabins that offer the idyllic mountain lodge experience. Each includes a terrace where you can relax back with a coffee while taking in the views, and similar to the resort, boast a shower, toilet amenities, plush bed and lounge seating.

You can pay for each activity as you go along or buy a pass. The Hatta Adventure Day Pass (Dhs250) includes ten activities with a set number of attempts and minutes for each, while the Hatta Thrill Day pass (Dhs500) includes unlimited access to ten activities. The SuperKids Day Pass is for Dhs150, for ages 6+. Kids below the age of six can still roam around the premises under adult supervision. The Hatta Wadi Hub has a prayer room, F&B outlets, mountain bike rentals and services, gift shop, parking and a first aid station. For more information and to book a stay, head to visithatta.com

Caesars Resort Bluewaters Dubai Relax back like Caesar would. This family-friendly destination has one of the best pools in the city, culinary offerings to suit all taste buds and spa treatments unlike ever experienced before

children and teens (yes, you read that right), we checked into Caesars Resort Bluewaters Dubai. After admiring the column wallpaper, stunning column LED fixture in the lobby, and quenching our thirst with a cool mint beverage, we checked into the Ocean King Suite.

ACCOMODATION

Dubai’s got yet another family-friendly destination brimming with culinary offerings and activities. This time, it’s an entire island known as Bluewaters. On the bridge to Bluewaters Island, your eyes meet glass-façade residential apartments, restaurants and cafés, narrow streets, and of course Ain Dubai (The world’s largest observation wheel). Perched at the corner of the island is the renowned Caesars Palace and Resort that needs no further introduction. To get an understanding of the activities, and spa treatments for 60 | MARCH 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

STAYCATION Our suite opened up to the lounge and direct unrivalled views of the temperature-controlled pool, outdoor jacuzzi, The Palm Jumeirah in the distance, and the ocean. It was tranquil and still the afternoon we arrived, so we quickly toured the suite – plush bed, expansive terrace with outdoor seating, bathroom with rose-gold fixtures, rain shower and tub, and Italian amenities – before slipping into our soft, cosy robes and furry slippers. Fueled by Nespresso and the fruit basket in the room, we headed out for a stroll on the private beach.

If you are staying at the resort for longer than a night, or just want to experience the hotel’s culinary options, a visit to Hell’s Kitchen at Caesars Palace for dinner is a must. The décor is slightly reminiscent of Gordon Ramsay’s show ‘Hell’s Kitchen’, with high-ceilings, pitchfork lighting fixtures, and a red-and blue-open kitchen layout to watch all the action. For appetisers, order dishes cooked on the show such as plump pan-seared scallops on a bed of pea puree, and butterpoached, juicy lobster tail atop creamy saffron risotto. For mains, we highly recommend the Côte de Bœuf (thick, bone-in rib steak) that has just the right amount of fat and meat, and pairs beautifully with the roasted garlic, and béarnaise and peppercorn sauce. Sticky toffee pudding is in on the menu for dessert, and the decadent sweet treat is one not-to-miss.

FACILITIES

CULINARY OFFERINGS The resort is home to six restaurants and lounges, and we opted for a meal at Cleo’s Table to begin with. The two-storey restaurant features a wooden deck with unrivalled views of JBR, exceptional cocktails, and a mouthwatering menu that’s as exquisite as the service. Begin with baked oysters on a bed of spinach topped with torched béchamel and cheese, followed by the hand cupped pappardelle pasta mixed with mushroom tapenade pasta and crème fraiche – a dish that’s still on my mind. For mains, you can go down the meat route, with a beautifully-presented, succulent lamb shoulder accompanied by apricots and Moroccan spices, or try the perfectly glazed and cooked Cedar Plan Scottish salmon served with blistered cherry tomatoes. By the poolside, the nachos come in highly recommended from the Venus Pool Bar staff. It may be an impeccable choice, but you have to be in the mood to have nachos, was my first thought. After serious convincing (they mentioned it twice!) I caved in and was incredibly impressed. Crisp and crunchy homemade nachos are topped with a generous helping of cheese, guacamole and chilli. Never have I ever tasted nachos cooked to perfection, and this dish is definitely one of the reasons I’d head back.

Qua Spa has opened its’ first outlet outside the US, at Caesars Palace, and if you’re a spa-enthusiast, you are in for a treat. The Japanesethemed space has none of the cliché spa suspects, with the décor being minimal, with tones of green, gold and nudes. If you have time for a few treatments, opt for the Royal Massage, where you sleep on a warm bed of rose-quartz sand, massaged with the oil you pick, either to revive or detox. The 90-minute treatment begins with pressure placed on various acupuncture points, followed by long strokes to release knots. Pads are filled with smooth rose quartz crystal and are heated and applied onto the body to instantly relieve stress. Another treatment worth trying is the Iyashi dome, the first in Dubai, inspired by the traditional Japanese practice ‘Suna Ryoho’ – where locals bury themselves in the sand near hot springs on the beach to eliminate toxins. The treatment uses cutting-edge technology to deeply cleanse the body, restore its balance and gain efficient and long-lasting slimming effects. You can lose approximately 600 calories per session. At the resort, kids and teens are kept entertained at their dedicated clubs and the family pool. Parents can head to the adults-only pool while their little ones are taken care off by babysitters. PET

SERVICES

GROOMED & Gorgeous To make sure your pooch gets a trim, wash and styling, while you carry on with your day, call in a mobile pet groomer for a stress-free and convenient service. This month, our Editor’s American Cocker Spaniel walked down to Dogs Deluxe to review the Spoil Me package bronze lighting fixture, gold scissors and an elegant nail set being a few attractive elements that catch the eye.

The package:

First impression: After scheduling an appointment via What’s App, we eagerly waited for the day as Coox, my American Cocker Spaniel was well due for a trim, wash and styling. Dogs Deluxe stayed in touch via What’s App, providing great customer service throughout, until we finally walked down to see the bright yellow van. I could tell, by the wagging of his tail, he knew he was in for something exciting. Once Coox and I stepped in, I took a quick look around to see each station. The spacious van is quite industrial at first, upon looking at the at the stainless-steel shower station, but the vibe changes to a sophisticated retro look on the other end, with wooden walls,

Channeling a grey coat, after running through the hills of Hatta, Coox was in desperate need of a trim, shampoo and styling. I opted for the Spoil Me package; a relaxing full body pampering experience with custom coat styling to suit your pet’s personality and lifestyle. It also includes a massage, bath, blow out, brush and fluff, clean ears, trimmed nails, and tear stain removal.

62 | MARCH 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

The verdict: When I picked up Coox, he was the fluffiest he ever looked in his life. His white coat with brown spots was silky and smooth, all knots were combed out, and he smelled fresh and clean. His fur was trimmed around his paws, the back, belly and near his eye area, but the experts managed to retain his adorable Cocker spaniel look. Ears were cleaned thoroughly, the little droplets below his eyes were wiped away, and his nails were trimmed down. As for his blow out, one look at his fluffy coat and after taking a look at his story on the Dogs deluxe Instagram page, I could tell he enjoyed it as much as I enjoy my Brazilian blow-outs. Your pet even receives a little report card on his/her behavior and condition of his/ her nails, skin, and coat, along with a gift.

Details: The Spoil Me package is priced at Dhs250 for small dogs, Dhs280 for medium dogs and Dhs315 for large dogs. The service is available for cats too, for Dhs250. Contact +97150 336 0183
