Since completion in 1942, the Alaska Highway has held a fascination for visitors and residents. The building of the Alaska Highway is an epic tale that involves mystery, hardship, and intrigue. In 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This significant event forced the American and Canadian governments to re-evaluate their security and they found there was an obvious need to shore up and protect the sovereignty of North America. In response, a secure land transportation link was needed to transfer military goods, materials, and men from the continental states to Alaska.

1942, Mile 1061 (known as Soldiers’ Summit) saw the ribbon cutting ceremony that officially opened the “Alcan” Highway. The 1528 mile road included 133 major bridges and more than 3000 culverts. The cost of this construction was approximately $140 million U.S. wartime dollars. This remarkable achievement has developed into a major transportation link in North America, stretching from Mile ‘0’ at Dawson Creek, British Columbia, through the Yukon Territory, and into Alaska. Since the completion of the Alaska Highway in the 1940’s, a continuous program of upgrading, widening, and straightening has been underway.

As one part of the wartime measures, 1,500 miles of road needed to be punched through the vast untamed wilderness of northern Canada and Alaska. Building in these northern areas would not be an easy feat. For eight months, men and women would battle mountains, mosquitoes and muskegs to finish this vital artery. On March 9, 1942, Dawson Creek, a small northern Canadian community with a population of 600 people, bustled and swelled with activity when the first train carrying American troops arrived. In a matter of weeks the town’s population exploded to 10,000.

Landmarks + Attractions Northern Alberta Railways Park

This is the location of the true Mile ‘0’ of the Alaska Highway. Within the four-acre Northern Alberta Railways Park, you will find the Railway Station Museum, the Dawson Creek Visitor Centre, the Mile ‘0’ Cairn, and the Dawson Creek Art Gallery. Available on-site is plenty of large vehicle parking, free internet access for your laptop, public washrooms, pay phones and gift shops.

Why is this area called Northern Alberta Railways Park (NAR Park)?

The Northern Alberta Railways Company out of Edmonton, Alberta bought this property from the Canadian government. The company built the railway to Dawson Creek and its terminal in 1931. When this area was taken over by the City of Dawson Creek for the complex, it was named for the railroad company.

The Mile 0 Cairn

Take a souvenir photo here as you embark on your adventure to follow the footsteps of the U.S. soldiers of 1942. The Cairn was erected to commemorate the exact spot that the United States Military surveyed as the very beginning of the construction of the Alaska Highway. All mileages on the Alaska Highway were (and still are) measured from this point.

Railway Station Museum

Occupying the original 1931 Northern Alberta Railways Station, the museum offers a glimpse into the notable past of Dawson Creek. Railway memorabilia, pioneer artifacts and wildlife displays are all here. A must see before you leave Dawson Creek! Open year-round; bus and group tours are welcome.

Traffic Circle Surveyor Statue

The statue in the traffic circle, adjacent to the Art Gallery, is a portrayal of a surveyor that worked on building the Alaska Highway. His clothing and survey equipment are true to the 1942 period and he is pointing the way to Alaska. Karl Mattson, a local artist, created this amazing statue by welding and shaping scrap metal that he found discarded on farms in the region.

The Story of the Mile 0 Post

The Mile 0 Post is the internationally recognized and the most photographed landmark of the Alaska Highway. The original 1942 stake that American soldiers surveyed for ground zero was located at what is now the traffic circle and marked by the surveyor statue. In 1946, this was destroyed and the local Junior Chamber of Commerce decided to replace it with a new Mile 0 icon. Located at Mile 1 of the Alaska Highway, this park has many attractions. In the park, you will find Walter Wright Pioneer Village, Rotary Lake, and Mile 0 RV Park and Campground.

This outdoor man-made lake is unique and a very popular spot in Dawson Creek for summer swimming. Located in Mile 0 Park, it is also a perfect place to enjoy picnics and a leisurely time outdoors. The lake has no lifeguard. Public washrooms and telephones are located at the park entrance building and Sudeten Hall.

History - The name “Pouce Coupe” is both musical and intriguing, and various tales are told of its origin. The most authentic is “The Land of Twelve Foot Davis” by J.C. MacGregor, McLeod’s Fort Dunvegan Journal, 1806 reads: “Sunday 17 August, Pouce Coupe with a few others arrived. They have made a poor hunt”, referring to an Indian Chief Pooscapee of the Beaver Tribe.

While walking or driving around Dawson Creek, you will see a number of murals depicting our historical and agricultural roots, local wildlife, and the building of the Alaska Highway. These murals have been growing in popularity over the years. Each summer, more murals are created to celebrate the history of Dawson Creek.

Take a photo of the restored 1930 train trestle (after the train tracks that cross the road and on your right). • Continue east to Pouce Coupe. Visit the town museum located in the 1930’s railway station building

A stop further down the street at the Hart Hotel will show you charming 1928 period style decor and hand carved life-sized statues. • Leave Pouce Coupe and travel north on Highway 2 for (2km/1.2m), turn right at the Rolla/Spirit River Road sign, travel (4.4km/2.8m), watch for the road sign with the binoculars, turn left to the parking lot for McQueen’s Slough. Stroll the boardwalk and trails and view over 100 species of bird life. • Exit from McQueen’s Slough by turning left (north), stop at the historic Rolla Pub and view heritage photos of the area. • Continue north for (26km/16m) to Rylette Road (Road 226), turn right for Sewell Valley Game Farm. Head (2.4km/1.4m) for an exciting end to your day.

Day Trips Excursion 2: Outdoor Art, Antiquity & Architecture

Time: leave 10:00am - return by 6:00pm Features: Chainsaw Carvings, Dinosaur Museum, Dams, Original Alaska Highway & Historic Curved Bridge Your Itinerary: • Drive Highway 97 South to the community of Chetwynd (100km/60m). Take a walking tour through the community and view 85+ original chainsaw carvings.

• Leave Chetwynd, drive Highway 29 to Hudson’s Hope (65km/40m). Stop at the museum, a former Hudson’s Bay Company store that is chock-full of phenomenal dinosaur bones, skeletons, tracks, and fossils. You can also explore the rich Fur Trade, Pioneer and First Nations histories. A short jaunt will take you to the W.A.C. Bennett Dam and Williston Lake. Take an underground tour of the dam, watch a video on its construction and peruse the interpretive centre. Have a meal at the Look-Out cafe or pack a lunch and picnic at the site by the lake.

Excursion 3: Fossils, Falls & Footpaths

Time: leave 10:00am - return by 6:00pm Features: Waterfalls, Dinosaurs and Hiking Trails, Chainsaw Carvings Your Itinerary: • Take Highway 97 South, turn left at Highway 52 junction to Tumbler Ridge which is (115km/68m) from Dawson Creek. Join a guided dinosaur trackway tour and visit the amazing Dinosaur Discovery Gallery exhibits.

• Travel north for (86km/53m) on scenic Highway 29 to Fort St. John. Drop into the museum and enjoy the area’s culture and past or stroll through downtown’s Pioneer Pathway. • Leave Fort St. John and travel south on the Alaska Highway to return to Dawson Creek. Turn left at historic Kiskatinaw Bridge sign (46km/29m). Detour for (10km/6m), travel on a piece of the original Alaska Highway and drive across the historic Kiskatinaw Bridge, (the only original Alaska Highway bridge still in use). Return to your Dawson Creek home.

• Get your camera and drive (60km/36m) further to be awed by Kinuseo Falls, a 197 feet (60 metres) high waterfall. Bring your lunch and picnic at the falls or stay longer and hike one of the many trails in the area. • Return to Tumbler Ridge, drive Highway 29 to Chetwynd (89km/47m) and end your day with a leisurely drive home. Travel Information Weather & What to Pack

Dawson Creek is definitely a four season climate. Bring your sunglasses and sunscreen to Dawson Creek any time of the year! Summer is very sunny with long daylight hours and winter can be dazzling with sunshine over crisp white snow. For the most part, summer is hot and dry, making tees and shorts the most comfortable choice. It does rain, so carry a sweater/sweatshirt and a light (possibly fleece lined) weatherproof jacket to layer (an umbrella is optional). Pack the footwear you are most comfortable in: sandals for the hot days and sneakers/ walking shoes for the rest of your adventure.

Spring and fall can have cool mornings, warm daytimes and often chilly nights. Winter can range from very chilly to bitterly cold and snowy and will call for heavier coats, gloves and warm boots.

What time is it in Dawson Creek? Dawson Creek, British Columbia does not observe daylight saving time (DST). This, and the fact that the city is only 20 miles west of the Alberta border often confuses travelers as to what time it actually is when they are in Dawson Creek. Not adjusting clocks in the summer makes Dawson Creek adhere to Pacific Standard Time which is the same time as Vancouver, most of British Columbia and Whitehorse, Yukon. People traveling from the province of Alberta should set their wristwatches and clocks back 1 hour. For example, if it is 12pm (noon) in Grande Prairie or Edmonton, Alberta, it is 11am in

Dawson Creek. Cell phones will usually switch automatically when the Alberta/British Columbia border is crossed. In the winter, Dawson Creek adheres to Mountain Standard Time: the same time as Alberta and 1 hour later than Vancouver, most of British Columbia and Whitehorse, Yukon. Why does Dawson Creek and the surrounding area not change its clocks for daylight saving time? Every time DST has been suggested, and at some points instituted, the area residents have rejected it. 1918 was the first

time DST was brought in and the farmers were strongly opposed arguing that the dew still remained on the crops and the cows still needed to be milked at their regular time and DST was thrown out. In the 1940’s DST was brought in again. Because local telegraph operators and the railroad schedules were on Alberta time, there was huge confusion over which time to use, so DST was cancelled again. The time change debate continued off and on up until 2002 where for now, the story ends with no changing of clocks in Dawson Creek and surrounding area.

Pick up a free self-guided walking brochure, stroll the city centre for an hour and re-live Dawson Creek’s history with original photos, murals and interpretive text. Next door to the Visitor Centre is the one-ofa-kind Art Gallery - a renovated 1930’s Grain Elevator. See fantastic local art, crafts, a display of historic Alaska Highway photos and the exceptional gift shop. Drop into Alaska Highway House and see how the history of the highway unfolded. Farmers’ Market – Every Saturday, March to December, 8:30am-12:30pm - home cooking, arts & crafts, farm produce, and lots more at 1444 102nd Avenue. Shop the eclectic downtown in quaint antique, second hand, and boutique stores. At McQueen’s Slough, stroll along the mile of boardwalk, view hundreds of bird species and a great nature photo-op.

With a complimentary walking tour, stroll the street at Walter Wright Pioneer Village and discover the area’s pioneer past. Swim, picnic, loaf, bask in the sun and read a book at the man-made Rotary Lake - free admission! Go for a power walk or saunter the Dawson Walking Trail – a 7km/4.5m nature trail that follows the meandering creek from one end of the city to the other. Work out at the Seniors Outdoor Fitness Park - complete gym equipment outdoors with instructional signage - free to all. Walk or reserve a hayride at Sewell Valley Game Farm to visit face-to-face with wild critters such as muscox, elk, big horn sheep, buffalo and more. Do laps, leisure swim, hot tub, sauna, steam bath or make use of the indoor walking path at the Ken Borek Aquatic Centre. Bear Mountain Wind Park: driving and trail maps available at the Visitor Centre - get up close to the turbines, explore the area, picnic, take amazing photos and go for a hike on the Rim Rocks Trail.
