SIMPLy ThE BEST! The UAE, and Dubai in particular, continues to garner accolades and draw admiring glances. The city’s achievements were celebrated time and time again at last month’s Business Traveller Middle East (BTME)2012 awards ceremony at Jumeirah Emirates Towers. Dubai International Airport was voted as the Best Airport in the Middle East, while Dubai Duty Free was awarded the Best Airport in the Middle East for Duty Free Shopping for the 11th consecutive year. Meanwhile, Emirates scooped four awards: Best Airline Worldwide, Best Regional Airline Serving the Middle East, Best First Class and the Best Frequent Flyer Programme, for Skywards. Dubai’s low-cost airline flydubai flew off with the award for the Best Low-cost Airline Serving the Middle East. Abu Dhabi also got in on the act, as BTME magazine readers voted the capital’s Etihad Airways as the airline with the Best Cabin Crew as well as the airline with the Best Economy Class. The Ritz-Carlton, in the Dubai International Financial Centre, won Best New Business Hotel in Dubai while Jumeirah at Etihad Towers won the Best Business Hotel in Abu Dhabi category. The Intercontinental Dubai Festival City was the BTME readers’ choice as the Best Business Hotel in Dubai and the Northern Emirates. Later in the month, at the annual World Travel Awards and the MENA Travel Awards, Dubai’s Meydan Hotel, the home of the Dubai World Cup was a winner three times over, as it was named as the Middle East’s Leading Sports Resort, the Best Conference/Convention Hotel and Best Five-Star Business/Corporate Hotel. In another success for the group, its desert resort and spa, Bab Al Shams, was crowned as the UAE’s Leading Hideaway Resort, for the third year in a row. As Dubai’s tourism providers and services continue to win accolades, the number of tourists visiting the Emirates is also on the rise. During the first quarter of this year, the numbers rose by almost 10 per cent to 2.6 million compared to the same period last year, while hotel revenue grew by 24 per cent to reach $1.46 billion. By the end of this year, it is forecast 10 million tourists will have holidayed in the country. Our congratulations also go out to the Etihad-sponsored Manchester City team who won the English Premier League title for the first time last month, placing the UAE firmly on the global football map. Magic of Madonna The queen of pop will be in uAe for the historic, Madonna Live in concert. Die-hard fans and music lovers have all been waiting with baited breath for the ‘True Blue’ singer to take to the stage. Madonna will perform on june 3 and 4 at du Arena, Abu Dhabi, as part of her World Tour. This not-to-be-missed, sold out concert is set to make dreams come true for thousands. There is a lot of excitement in the air as thousands of fans from across the Middle east and the rest of the world fly in to witness the magic of this musical extravaganza unfold in the capital. Tracks to brush up on before you head down to the concert include ‘Papa don’t preach’, ‘Material girl’, ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’, ‘Holiday’ and ‘Open Your Heart’. Meanwhile, Burjuman Centre in Dubai celebrates all things Madonna with the Simply Madonna exhibition. Featuring an exclusive collection of outfits, iconic jewellery, tour costumes, film props, photographs, awards and personal items that celebrate superstar’s 25-year career, it's definitely worth a visit. Balletic beauty Swan Lake, one of the most beautiful and revered ballets in the world, is back in Dubai. After selling out shows and wowing audiences with their spectacular Grand Gala Ballet in September last year, the First Group Theatre is showcasing Tchaikovsky’s famous masterpiece, the tale of a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse. Featuring 26 dancers, audiences should be prepared for two-and-a-half hours of pure elegance and grace. Performance will take place at 7.30pm from june 6-9 at the Madinat jumeirah. june 2012

Feel the beat Beats, melody, rhythm, soul. Under African Skies, a homage to the many melodies of Africa, is a famous South African musical production that is heading to Dubai after its four-month sold-out tour. The shows are at The First Group Theatre at Madinat jumeirah daily from june 27-30. This nostalgic musical will take you through the history of South African music starting off from the Fifties and Fifties, and progressing through the decades until nineties. Featuring the music of the pennywhistle and Kewla jazz as well as hits from the late Miriam Makeba along with Paul Simon, johnny Clegg, Mango Groove and many more South African legends, it promises to touch the depths of your soul.

Mischa Barton in Dubai American actress and model turned fashion designer Mischa Barton was in Dubai recently for the world premier of her lastest clothing line. Best known for her role in O.C, she launched her contemporary line of clothing at Rivaage Boutique in Dubai Mall. The signature collection, which she designed with her mother, who accompanied her on this trip to the Middle east, takes inspiration from the retro Bohemian style. A colourful mix of functional and easy to wear apparel, the collection features feminine dresses, vintage style skirts, cardigans, jumpsuits, leggings and signature pieces like the ‘Mischa’ jacket to the store. “Dubai is such a great city, i am so glad i was able to bring my mother out here with me so we can enjoy a bit of a girl’s holiday because back in the States we don't get to spend that much time together. We are planning on going to the hotel pool and enjoying the sun here.” According to Barton, Dubai was chosen for the launch of the collection in appreciation of the love and support that her many fans here have given her.

Rock on With dark melodies and a searing rock sound, evanescence are geared up for their first ever stage performance in Dubai. They will play at the Dubai World Trade Centre on june 22 and the audience can look forward to all time hits like Bring me to Life and My Immortal. 14

ueFA euRO 2012 kicks off on june 8 with the opening match taking place in Warsaw and the finals on july 1 in Kyiv. Matches will be broadcast live in more than 200 countries, including the uAe where many hotels and clubs have set up large screens for the event. Football fever is on an all time high in the country following the news that the uAe’s national team will play at the London 2012 Olympics coupled with the recent Barclays Premier League win by etihad sponsored Manchester City Football Club. “The variety of life is truly alluring,” says a quote in the book about the simplicity and ambience in the culture of its muse: the UAE. And if a glimpse into this country’s 66-year history is what you’re after, look no further than the captivating illustrations found within – a collective canvas of 170 images (picked from more than 1,000 submissions)

takes you on a pictorial journey, from the early Trucial States through to the UAE as we know it today. Its evolution is documented through the eyes of 43 photographers of different backgrounds, each capturing the country’s many facets through their own unique aesthetic. There is an eclectic assortment as works by veteran photographers Ramesh Shukla, Ronald Codrai, Noor Ali Rashid and renowned explorer Wilfred Thesiger stand alongside images by several talented amateurs. There are contemporary skyscrapers, quaint palm-front huts and traditional dhows, colourfully chaotic bazaars, iconic structures such as the Burj Al Arab and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque as well as undiscovered corners and untapped landscapes. Photographs that depict people at different

times of the country’s development are the most memorable: a boy caught in a locust storm circa 1953, a fisherman in Fujairah gathering his nets as the sun prepares to set, women displaying their wares at an old souk, the countless construction workers who played a key role in Dubai’s architectural transformation and close-ups of the many faces that make up this increasingly diverse society. This coffee table book was recently unveiled in the courtyard of the historic Bastakiya district, with canvas prints of each of the images evoking a sense of nostalgia in passersby. Available in four cover options, it marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of the nation and the 25th anniversary of Motivate Publishing’s books division. It is just one of more than 300 books that celebrate the UAE’s unique identity and explore the Arab region as a whole.

EDGE OF ARABIA BOOTH-CLIBBORN EDITIONS

For many, Saudi Arabia remains a land shrouded in mystery, but Edge of Arabia: Contemporary Art from the Kingdom of Saudi

Arabia helps to demystify areas of the country. Launched by the Edge of Arabia initiative at Art Dubai 2012, this hardcover volume is the first book to explore Saudi Arabia’s fascinating and rapidly growing contemporary art scene. It sheds light on a group of pioneering Saudi artists who are boldly expressing themselves in a country with few art institutes and little art infrastructure, and in doing so, are shaping their society’s ongoing transition. The art may only be exploring their country’s cultural and political facets, yet it is accessible to a global audience, thereby enabling dialogue between the Kingdom and the rest of the world. At the heart of this 286-page book are in-depth profiles of Saudi Arabia's leading contemporary artists, along with interviews and illustrations of their groundbreaking

works. Among the 12 featured are Shadia and Raja Alam, sisters who last year became the first Saudis to represent their country at the Venice Biennale; Abdulnasser Gharem, a conceptual pioneer and lieutenant colonel in the Saudi Arabian army; and Ahmed Mater, a doctor whose striking works have been showcased at the British Museum and the LA County Museum of Art. It also documents milestone Edge of Arabia exhibitions held in London, Venice, Berlin, Istanbul, Dubai and, most recently, the initiative’s homecoming to Jeddah in January. Adding a new perspective are written contributions from a wide range of international figures such as the founder of Cuadro Gallery, Bashar Al-Shroogi, art critic Roxana Azimi, author Henry Hemming and art historian Salwa Mikdadi.

READ IT IF YOU WANT TO: RECONNECT WITH A NEARLY EXTINCT TRADITION ARISH: PALM-LEAF ARCHITECTURE SANDRA PIESIK You may know Dubai’s architectural scene for its post-modern skyline and gravity-defying skyscrapers… but one curious architect by the name of Sandra Piesik has boldly ventured into its unknown side, delving into the complex history and traditions of Arish (palm-leaf construction methods). In fact, the 240-seater palm hut that hosted her session on the subject at this year’s Emirates LitFest was also her brainchild. This 192-page hardback edition is the result of three years’ research into the indigenous, and ingenious, structures made from palm leaves that provided shelter from the harsh climate of the Arabian Peninsula for several decades. It has been described as "the first comprehensive publication dedicated to recording the special place of date palm-leaf architecture in the UAE's cultural heritage".

With Western-style architecture now dominant in the Gulf, the book aims to draw attention to the region’s rapidly dwindling craft traditions and link its historic heritage with the contemporary environment. With black and white imagery depicting palm leaf houses across the UAE, the book opens with a photographic overview of Arish’s steep history. At its heart is an examination of the distinct architectural techniques across each of the seven emirates, which leads to a dedicated chapter on design details. Taking a realistic approach to an ancient art, the issue of sustainability is then addressed as contemporary applications of Arish in architecture and product design are explored. Filled with detail and vivid illustrations, the volume is sure to inspire the future face of a rich cultural past.

READ IT IF YOU WANT TO: TAKE A CULINARY JOURNEY THROUGH ARABIA POMEGRANATES AND ROSES: MY PERSIAN FAMILY RECIPES ARIANA BUNDY As one of the oldest civilisations in the world, Persia’s culinary influence throughout the world is undeniable. Yet finding a decent Iranian cookbook has remained nearly impossible… even stranger if you consider the country’s sizeable expat population in Dubai. Enter Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef and TV presenter Ariana Bundy’s latest endeavour, summed up perfectly by food writer Madhur Jaffrey: "If you dream about being whisked into a world of gentle, aromatic Persian delights… where fruit, nuts, green herbs and flowery fragrances combine beautifully with meats, vegetables and grains, look no further than Pomegranates and Roses.” Paying tribute to her family roots, PersianAmerican Bundy spent time in the kitchens of relatives and travelled back to Iran to update the recipes that had been handed down from generation to generation. With pomegranate seeds and juice, rose water and rose petals, fragrant herbs and spices featuring prominently, they’re sure to appeal to those who love Middle Eastern flavours and fragrances. 22

Peppered throughout the 224-page book are old family photographs, anecdotes about growing up in Iran, Farsi script and illustrated prints taken from poetry books belonging to Bundy’s grandmother; it feels as much like a trip into her early childhood as a crash course on the evolution of Persian cuisine. Of particular interest is the ancient Unani system, which classifies food as garmi (hot) or sardi (cold). Iranians believe that each person’s body type leans towards one of the two categories, and that a balance between the two is needed to stay healthy. The vibrant collection of recipes covers everything from preserves, condiments and cold soups to hearty mains such as saffron-tinged rice with chicken and barberries, roast leg of lamb with saffron and yoghurt, and meatballs with rice, herbs and plums. The richly illustrated cookbook was launched at this year’s edition of the Emirates LitFest, with Bundy recently returning to the city for a cooking demonstration and book signing session. dv

Paying tribute to voluntary, nonremunerated blood donors and raising awareness of the need for safe blood is World Blood Donor Day. It occurs on the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the creator of the ABO blood group system. The first edition of this global observance took place in 2004 following the success of World Health Day 2000, which focused on blood donation. This year’s theme is “Every blood donor is a hero”, reinforcing the idea that every one of us can become a hero by giving blood. The WHO estimates that if one per cent of a country's population donates blood, it would be sufficient to meet its basic requirements for blood for transfusion.

More than 60 countries mark Father’s Day annually on the third Sunday of June, celebrating fathers and their influence on society. A woman named Sonora Dodd of Washington, United States, conceived the idea while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. She wanted a day to honour her father, a war veteran who was left to raise his six children alone after the death of his wife. With the help of the town’s ministers, a day in June was chosen in 1910 because it was the month of Dodd’s father’s birth. Father's Day was officially recognised as a permanent national holiday in the US when then president Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

Created by Pet Sitters International (PSI), this event celebrates the great companions dogs make and encourages pet adoption from shelters and humane societies. PSI believes that through this day, people without dogs will see the human-animal bond and will consider adopting orphaned pets for their own. Prominent companies such as Google, Amazon and (of course) PETA allow dogs in the office on this day, to the delight of employees and their furry friends. TYDTWD was first celebrated in 1996 in the UK and in America in 1999; it is held annually on the Friday following Father's Day. Recent years have seen increasing participation in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

With a worldwide audience of over 500 million, Wimbledon is considered the most prestigious of all tennis events; it’s also the only one of the four Grand Slam tournaments still played on grass. Held in the London suburb of Wimbledon since 1877, the 126th edition will see the finest players from over 60 countries competing to be champion. As the world’s oldest tennis tournament, Wimbledon is steeped in traditions such as an all-white dress code for players, the eating of strawberries and cream, and Royal patronage. oncourse 3, the world’s first purpose built A380 facility, is due for completion by the end of this year. Dubai Airports has launched an intensive operational readiness programme to prepare the new facility for its opening in the first quarter of next year. “Concourse 3 will be opened to the public in the first quarter of 2013 once Dubai Airports is completely satisfied that it has passed all operational and service readiness tests with flying colours,” Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, announced at the recent Arabian Travel Market. “We will not compromise on service.” Dubai Airports recently kicked off its 28

operational readiness and airport transition programme together with its stakeholders – Emirates, dnata, police, immigration and Dubai Corporation for Aviation Engineering Projects. It will take over the responsibility of Concourse 3 in phases, as the contractors complete their work.

Bringing it together Some key elements of the facility, including the baggage handling system and train system linking Terminal 3 to the new concourse are already in place. Most of the structural work on Concourse 3 is also complete, and the activation of airport systems and completion of the internal structures is all that remains.

Stringent simulation tests of every aspect of the facility from the baggage handling system and lounge facilities will be carried out to ensure they are able to cope with the millions passengers that will eventually use them. The trials and tests will grow in intensity and scope, until they simulate the full operation of Concourse 3, including the boarding and disembarking of aircraft, use of lounge facilities, restaurants and flight connection facilities. “Over the next few weeks, our preparatory work will move into high gear. We learned a lot from our experience with Terminal 3,” Griffiths said. ”We learned that the big bang theory is not the best approach when it comes to opening an airport… soft launches following rigorous testing and operational trials is the only way to go.”

Passengers from Terminal 3 will be able to connect with C3 using the train, another first for Dubai Airports in the Middle East. “As Emirates continues its rapid expansion, ensuring that we have the right infrastructure in place to support it is key,” Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, said. “As the largest operator of A380s in the world, having a dedicated concourse that is built to exclusively accommodate this aircraft, will transform the airport experience for Emirates’ customers. Philippe Starck, the father of democratic design, has designed the Mama Shelter, a quirky new hotel that recently opened in Marseille, France. Starck, who designed the famed Ghost chair for Kartell and in so doing produced high design at affordable prices, has created a fun and edgy 127-room boutique hotel that allows travellers to indulge in the stylish Starck experience on a budget. Conceived by the Trigano family, the co-founders of Club Med, and French philosopher Cyril Aouizerate, the first Mama Shelter opened in Paris more than three years ago, and it is a concept Starck describes as “the jeans of the hotel business, following new social values of discipline, honesty and humour”. The designer has sought to create an informal hotel with an eclectic and electric ambiance, and the Mama Shelter in Marseille has a wide selection of room sizes ranging from just 15 square metres to 42 square metres in five different categories and colour schemes, with rates starting from just under US$95 per night. Located near Cours in a district that has an urban art vibe, nestled among galleries, andthe hotel’s interior reflects the cool colours of the Mediterranean and the bustling energy of the port city. A focal point of the hotel is the four-metre-long foosball table that allows for up to 16 people to play, close to the custom built stage complete with a collection off suspended musical instruments. Well-known chefs Alain Senderens and Jerome Banctel have created a unique and simple menu filled with sumptuous dishes, giving the hotel everything you could possibly need. Model helicopter enthusiasts will soon be seen piloting their own personal A.R. Drone, which features high-definition cameras from Parrot. Wi-Fi controlled using a smart phone or iPad, the new generation high-tech quadricopter, fitted with a HD camera that allows flyers to take photos or record videos, which can be viewed in the pilot’s device screen in real time – giving them a bird’s eye view. However, would be spooks will be disappointed to know that this drone is not suited to any spy activities as the parrot-shaped devise can only fly within a radius of 50 metres from the pilot. The French-made A.R.Drone, will be launched in Dubai next month. The 100 per cent recycled FedEx Express Envelope have been elevated to an even higher eco standard with the launch of the companies new carbon-neutral shipping programme. FedEx, one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, is the first company in the sector to launch a carbon-neutral shipping option. It is part of its EarthSmart, sustainability programme, which aims to deliver benefits to the planet while improving the company’s environmental performance. Every year FedEx will calculate the tonnes of carbon dioxide released though the shipment of all its envelopes across the world (of which more than 200 million are shipped annually) and purchase the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide offsets from BPNeutral, which will neutralise the equivalent amount of its emissions by investing in alternative energy or conservation projects. dv

What was the best and worst part about growing up with a Mormon mother and Palestinian father? The best is the exposure to different cultures with different beliefs. The worst is that they push their beliefs on you and are always trying to get you to be like them. I never felt like I fit into either culture or religion so it’s a blessing and a curse… but mostly a blessing.

What aspect of your first ever stand-up gig can you distinctly remember? There were maybe 10 people in the crowd during an open mic night in a coffee shop. My eyes sort of blacked out on stage and I got tunnel vision; it made my hands shake and I was so nervous.

Strangest venue you have performed at? Tough question because there have been so many weird bars, nightclubs, hotels, private events in weird places etc… I performed in a barn once during a sort of farmer wedding and was asked to roast the bride and groom.

THE JOKE’S ON US With a Palestinian father and Mormon mother, Aron Kader was practically born with a lifetime’s worth of inspiration for stand-up comedy. A popular fixture at the legendary Comedy Store in Los Angeles, he rose to fame by joking about life as an Arab in post 9/11 America during his stint on the Axis Of Evil Comedy Tour... and doing those genius George Bush impressions. Samia Qaiyum caught up with the comedian after his hilarious performance in Dubai. During your first trip to Dubai, you described the city as “Vegas if the theme was Miami”. Has your impression changed? Actually I think I said it’s like if Los Angeles and Vegas had a baby with a Miami theme. Dubai is one of the most unique cities on Earth and over the past five years, I’ve developed so many great memories and friendships. I love returning to Dubai; it has a special place in my heart.

How does the audience here differ from other cities? Sometimes the crowds can be a bit disconnected but because Dubai is so international, it’s a great place to do international-type jokes. There aren’t many places where you can do Arab, Indian, UK and US-themed jokes all in the same night. Some say Dubai audiences can be too laidback but I don’t know. I’ve seen so many crowds and all of them have their own challenges. 74

What is your favourite destination as a comedian? Washington, DC. Besides it being my hometown, the audiences are very smart, politically aware, ethnically diverse and young… and also starved for entertainment since it’s a very stuffy and politically correct city. They love off-colour humour.

How do you explore a new city? The best thing to do is to go to a city’s oldest part to get the best idea of the culture and see its real side. In Dubai, people need to see the old city and Gold Souk. You see funny people that talk funny, get into funny conversations and pick up a few jokes here and there.

What have your world travels taught you? Besides not bringing liquids and gels to the airport? I’ve learned that you can do the same jokes everywhere, and that humour is truly universal. Also that people have good hearts.

Has your job as a comedian gotten harder since George Bush’s presidency ended? How does Obama compare in inspiring new material? I retired my Bush stuff, but will break it out from time to time. Obama is much more boring for comedy… plus it’s harder to make fun of someone you like. Bush was a gold mine for jokes; he was a joke, a very horrid one. But I'm finding my way with Obama jokes and if he gets a second term in office, I'm sure it will get easier.

Do you think the Axis of Evil comedy tour has helped tackle negative stereotypes of Arabs in the West? Yes I do, but even more, I think we helped inspire a young and flourishing stand-up comedy scene. Just five years after the tour, you see so many local comedians doing well. This is what I am most proud of. You can't change stereotypes overnight but when Americans see young comedians in the Middle East, I think it helps to change their notions of the culture.

How would you describe the current state of politics to an alien that’s just landed on Earth? Crisis!!! Cultures clashing, religious fanatics, violence, corrupt politics and financial problems are the plague of our age. People can communicate so fast now with YouTube and Facebook, it should be able to bring them together. However, I'm an optimist and believe people can overcome the problems and rebuild a better world, but we need more smart people to work in government. dv
