Blessed with countless Guinness Record titles, rich heritage and cosmopolitan citizens, Dubai’s global popularity is rising, thanks to the opening of new landmarks and the growing vibrancy of the cultural scene. Fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld choose The Island, an exclusive purpose-built destination off the coast of the emirate, to unveil his latest cruise collection for Chanel, an event attended by Hollywood stars Freida Pinto, Dakota Fanning and Tilda Swinton, as well as fashion guru Carine Roitfeld and musicians Vanessa Paradis and Janelle Monáe. Football fans have had fun spotting Manchester City players out and about in Dubai, as the freshlycrowned Premier League champions spent time in the UAE. The Etihad-sponsored team hosted open training sessions for fans and played against Al Ain at the new Hazza bin Zayed Stadium, a match attended by large crowds of supporters. Dubai’s latest goal is to become the world’s most-visited city, a title currently held by London: the UK capital was visited by 16 million tourists in 2013, but Dubai is not trailing far behind, registering 11 million hotel guests in the same year. More attractions, events, hotels, world-leading infrastructure and services are in the plans, aiming to catch the imagination both of new visitors and returning travellers. A new beachfront development is to be created around Al Mamzar Lake, featuring residences, shopping outlets and water-themed leisure attractions. A Dhs2 billion waterfront development on the charming Dubai Creek has also been approved: it will include traditional souks, restaurants, art galleries, workshops for Emirati folklore arts and handicraft stores, as well as a floating market and hotels with more than 500 rooms that will be ready by the end of 2016. In the past five years, the UAE has established itself among the top five countries in the world for new hotel openings, with an annual increase of 5.3%; Dubai registers the region’s strongest occupancy levels, at 88.4%; and more and more world-class brands – such as Jumeirah and Rotana – are choosing to open new hotels in the city. Every effort is now leading to Expo 2020: 25 million people are expected to attend, and the city is getting ready with infrastructure works estimated to have a value of Dhs12.54 billion. A new website, app and social media platform will also be launched later this year, to help visitors make the most of their time in the city. Dubai’s approach is unique: where else can you take a break from shopping to ski down an indoor mountain, pet a penguin or swim with dolphins or sharks? dv

Top of the World Record-breaker. They have superhero powers. Skydive dubai-sponsored Soul Flyers World Champions Fred Fugen and Vince Reffet took the first leap off The burj Khalifa, 828 metres tall, in april, claiming the new Guinness World Record title for Highest base Jump – made from the World's Tallest building. “This was the jump of a lifetime and came after three years of hard training. i am glad we landed successfully, accomplishing a lifelong dream,” stated Fugen. “This was my best jump by far. it was a dream come true,” added Reffet. This is the second victory for sponsor Skydive dubai, one of the world’s premier skydiving facilities, located in the heart of dubai City. Fantasy island The great escape. in case you’ve missed it: for 12 months a stunning 3d billboard announcement display towering over dubai, between Mall of the Emirates and The dubai Mall, will give residents and visitors a showcase of the best of abu dhabi’s Yas island. Guests of all ages are welcome at Yas Waterworld abu dhabi, the uaE's first mega-waterpark, which boasts 43 rides and slides. The billboard also features the first and only Ferrari-branded theme park in the world, Ferrari World abu dhabi — complete with more than 20 rides and attractions. Health is wealth The old saying defines the relationship between medical innovation, technology and business in the 21st Century, and the dubai Health authority is creating a series of programmes to become the next competitive force in the industry. The city’s health sector currently includes about 2,500 facilities and in 2012 the number of medical tourists who visited dubai totalled 107,000 - with revenues reaching dhs653 million (uS$178 million). Looking to 2016, the city has created a new plan to become the premier destination for medical tourism. according to the city’s health chiefs, the first phase of the initiative, which will run until 2016, will include the launch of a dedicated portal for medical tourism, as well as special medical tourism packages for a global audience. The second phase, set to run until 2020, will aim to further develop and market available facilities. by 2016, medical tourist numbers are expected to rise to 170,000 and revenues to dhs1.1 billion; and by 2020 to 500,000 and dhs2.6 billion respectively.
The coolest workout Ski dubai, the region’s top ski resort, is offering free snow-aerobics classes to motivate people to get fit during a fun and unique 30-day fitness plan. The ‘Snow-robics’ will put participants (classes limited to 30) through a high-impact 45-minute session that will help them burn calories, while surrounded by snow-covered hills in sub-zero conditions. The four-week plan is designed to deliver weight loss via memorable work-outs; high-intensity circuit training using one’s own body weight; and other functional exercises, led by qualified instructors — as well as recommended healthy meal plans and nutritional guidelines.
On the ball Crazy for the World Cup. dubai’s in the grip of a football frenzy and Emirates, a partner with FiFa since 2006, was the first airline sponsor of FiFa World Cup™. This year, brazil will host the FiFa World Cup™ for the second time and Emirates will again be present to share the occasion with fans and players from around the world. For
those not flying to the event, and many of the city’s top hotspots will be screening the big games. The irish Village amongst others will be showing the games on multiple screens and offering their famous hospitality to football fans. This season was the uaE’s leading family entertainment and cultural destination’s longest year ever, bringing 190 days of festivity and fun to guests of all ages from around the world; welcoming over 2000 unique performers entertaining visitors; and putting on 60 firework displays throughout the duration of the season. Thanks to Emirates airline, visitors to The Village at The dubai Mall can experience flying like never before with the launch of the Emirates a380 Experience - the Middle East’s first public a380 flight simulator, which debuted in London to an overwhelming reception. His Highness Sheikh ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates airline & Group, officially launched the simulator, as well as the newest Emirates Official Store, also located in the famous shopping destination.
Ship shape Wind in your sails. Shahrazad, the 2014 winner of the first-ever Sir bani Yas Offshore Race, was recently crowned at an awards ceremony at dubai Offshore Sailing Club (dOSC). The world’s imagination was captured bythe premiere edition of the two-day nonstop race which brought 70 sailing enthusiasts aboard 11 boats together for a week-long event. Organised by Tourism development & investment Company (TdiC), in partnership with anantara Hotels Resorts & Spas, Rotana Jet, dOSC and Volvo Ocean Race abu dhabi Stopover, the event could help Sir bani Yas become the region’s foremost sailing destination. 12

Worldwide winner destination dubai. Tripadvisor, the world’s largest travel site, has named dubai as one of the top 25 places to go in the world, in the Traveller Choice awards 2014. The site highlighted 646 activities to try in dubai, including the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural understanding, The dubai Fountain and dubai Creek, as well as attractions in the city, desert and along the coast. Winners are determined using an algorithm using the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, attractions and restaurants, gathered over a 12-month period.

This is why the latest addition to the local leisure line-up is particularly exciting: just steps away from Jumeirah Beach Residence, located along the shoreline of Dubai Marina, The Beach is a complete package that’s resulted from a totally new approach to beach life in the city. The waterfront is buzzing with people playing volleyball and exercising, as fitness fans enjoy the outdoor fitness track that features unique state-of-the-art workout equipment; and the inflatable waterpark off the shoreline attracts children and adults alike, providing hours of sunny fun. Families have the choice of several play zones – such as the Kids’ Splash Pad, a shaded area featuring waterfalls, fountains and even a series of water-breathing dragons – while those who are looking to simply chill out can enjoy the manicured lawns, comfy benches, sunbeds, bean bags and, of

Australian sand artist Jenny Rossen (pictured right), known around the world as the ‘sandcastle girl’, created amazing sand sculptures for this new destination, which are still visible now on the shoreline and lit at night. “I have worked in many places around the world and this is, without competition, the best beach for sand sculptures,” says Rossen. “With the backdrop of the turquoise sea and the bright blue sky, it’s no wonder that pictures of my creations have travelled across the globe. The Dubai crowd is culturally diverse and the location provides numerous ways to enjoy the facilities.

With three Arab films nominated in three separate categories for this year’s Academy Awards, the timing of Dubai Duty Free (DDF) and Jumeirah Group’s sponsorship of the inaugural Dublin Arabic Film Festival (DAFF) – created by six-time Oscar nominated filmmaker Jim Sheridan and Festival Director Zhara Moufid – was ideal. And with special guest star, legendary actor Omar Sharif, stealing the show, audiences flocked to the red carpet. Zhara Moufid, DAFF Festival Director said, “It was a pleasure to have Omar Sharif as our special guest for the inaugural Dublin Arabic Film Festival – he is a wonderful and classy man. We are also fortunate to have Jim Sheridan as president of the festival and we are very grateful for the support of our presenting sponsor, DDF. It was a really successful first edition; we are thrilled with the outcome and looking forward to next year already!” Sheridan’s festival brought the cinematic spirit of the Arabic world to the Light House Cinema and the Chester Beatty Library, two of Dublin’s cultural gems. Guests were greeted with an elaborate Arabian experience, including a red carpet greeting by a man in traditional Arabic dress with a Peregrine Falcon, Arabian canapés, wines courtesy of Bacchus Vinos, and a traditional Arabic henna artist. The film was followed by a question and answer session with Omar Sharif and Jim Sheridan, where Sharif revealed his fondest memories of his old friend and colleague, Peter O’Toole, and their time filming Lawrence of Arabia. Guests were then whisked back to the Shelbourne Hotel for a glamorous after-party which lasted until the small hours. The opening night was attended by the regions’ foremost arts supporters and cultural attachés, including: the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan; Sinead El Sibai, Vice President of Marketing, DDF; Austin Frost, Vice President Sales and Marketing, Jumeirah Group; H.E. Mr. Khalid Nasser Rashid Lootah, UAE Ambassador to Ireland, and his wife Mahara; H.E. Mr. Ahmed Abdel Razek, Ambassador of Palestine; and H.E. Anas Khales, Ambassador of Morocco, and his wife Mounia. The rest of the festival programme included the screening of nine movies over two venues, as well as a final-night screening of Omar, the Oscar-nominated film of special guest, Palestinian director Hany Abu-Assad. Other festival headliners at DAFF included Egyptian director Ahmad Abdalla, and Moroccan film and television director Nabil Ayouch, who has represented his home country at the Oscars with his movies Mektoub and Ali Zaoua. Dr Jim Swire, who tragically lost his daughter in the Lockerbie bombing and has spent more than 25 years fighting to unearth the truth behind the disaster, was also an honoured guest. JunE 2014

He explained that the launch of the festival coincided with “the first really good year for Arab cinema worldwide….I think we’re coming in at the right time. It’s not a political thing, they’re just the best films out there.” He has always been captivated by Arab cinema. “I really like the Arab culture and I was fascinated from the time I saw Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s movie Ali: Fear Eats the Soul in the 1970s. I think one of my favourite films ever made was Battle of Algiers, which I kind of used a bit in In the Name of the Father. So I’ve been very interested in Arab culture,” he added. “I really liked Wadjda, the new Saudi film. I also liked Five Broken Cameras, the Palestinian documentary. It’s good to get exposure to other cultures and I think the danger in the world is that you just get movies from one place, which is Hollywood. You need to find other ways to get movies in front of people,” he explained. dv 18

SPACED-OUT The question of how we will be travelling in the world of tomorrow is more relevant today than ever before. The dream of being in outer space has never been so close for one of the 680 Emirati nationals who took part in the competition launched by Aabar Investments and Virgin Galactic: the winner will get a place on board the UAE-backed SpaceShipTwo once it is up and running – which reports say could be as soon as the end of this year. Recent news also suggests that Oxfordshire-based company Reaction Engines is making progress developing a new space-plane engine that could take us from London to Sydney in less than four hours, and would use regular airports’ runways. Boeing is staying at the forefront of innovation by designing futuristic planes, such as the Phantom Eye, an unmanned aircraft powered by energy-efficient liquid hydrogen which means it can remain in flight for up to four days; and the BWB (Blended Wing Body), a tail-less experimental plane with a flattened body that promises extreme fuel efficiency and nearly silent cruising. Meanwhile, Airbus has unveiled its 2050 Smarter Skies vision, which entails more flights, fewer emissions and quicker passenger journey times. The focus, however, is not only on aircraft design but also on operations management, in a bid to shorten every flight around the world by approximately 13 minutes: this would save about nine million tonnes of fuel per year and substantially reduce CO2 emissions. Another new concept for a futuristic plane comes from Spanish designer Oscar Viñals. An aerospace and aviation technology enthusiast, Viñals took inspiration from blue whales to design the AWWA Sky Whale, which accommodates up to 755 passengers on three different levels. This ecologically-responsible and versatile plane sports an ‘intelligent’ structure featuring high-tech specifications such as wings with active air flow control system for extra stability, and a turbine producing electrical energy to power the hybrid engines.
ROAD TRIP Give it a few years: drone technology is going to be everywhere and we will ask ourselves how we ever lived without it.
Renault has launched the KWID concept car, which boasts a ‘flying companion’: a drone that can take off from the vehicle’s roof. Controlled by a tablet integrated in the KWID’s dashboard, it can be used to scout traffic ahead, take landscape pictures or detect obstacles on the road; the aim is to make the driving experience safer… and more fun. Remaining in the sci-fi realm, Land Rover has presented a concept car with an ‘invisible bonnet’: virtual imaging creates an augmented reality view of the terrain ahead, making the front of the car virtually invisible from inside the cabin. Hidden obstacles on the road are in full view, making manoeuvring on difficult terrain, Land Rover promises, child’s play.
DOWN BY THE SEA If on-water is your preferred way to travel, a new versatile vehicle comes from Italy: a compact boat, fully customisable down to the smallest detail, the Jet Capsule is designed for a range of uses, from leisure to transport and even security patrol. Completely handcrafted and available in a wide range of dimensions, finishing and structural details, it is permitted to navigate in any region of the world and can withstand waves up to four metres high. You can choose your engine, and whether you want a sofa, sundeck or – if you live the James Bond life – even bulletproof windows. Created by Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini, it was recently launched following five years of research and development. It is now available for sale worldwide, with prices starting at approximately Dhs763,000 (US€150,000). The sixth generation of the DeepFlight winged submersible series, the Black Hawk, has been also unveiled. Known as the largest green field music and performing arts festival in the world, this gathering is a hot spot for celebrity-sighting in the audience. The festival began in 1984, a year after the death of blues icon Muddy Waters, and this annual homecoming for blues artists from around the world takes place on five stages, with more than 500,000 blues fans gathering in Grant Park to enjoy the shows. Past performers include Bonnie Raitt, Ray Charles, B.B. King, the late Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy and the late Koko Taylor. A copy of the enigmatic portrait, hanging in the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, was recently restored with the help of infrared technology, bringing back to life a very similar background to the original, only from a slightly different perspective. The research suggests that one of Da Vinci’s students may have been working at the same time as the great master, but standing at a slightly different angle. When the two paintings are placed side by side, the optical effect is close to those of 3D images. Italian style is being celebrated this summer at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. A major exhibition called The Glamour of Italian Fashion 1945-2014 looks at the rise of the sector from the post-World War One era until the present day. The show follows the growth of the industry, from the first fashion shows in the Sala Bianca of Pitti Palace to the glamorous Hollywood stars who took Italian style to the movies, as well as the rise of some of the biggest names in the fashion industry, including Pucci, Valentino, Gucci, Armani, Fendi, Prada, Versace and Dolce&Gabbana. As more and more Chinese investment is being pumped into traditional Italian companies, the curator also asks: what is next for this industry that has generated so much wealth for Italy? Through social media, the incredibly brave and positive teenager set out to raise US$ 17,000 for the charity, in an ultimate bid to help others. His upbeat and determined approach won the hearts of over 165,000 generous people all over the world, including celebrities and politicians. Even after his passing, donations continue to flow in through his page on the Just Giving website. Such a truly remarkable, selfless young man who achieved so much in such a short time is an inspiration to us all. dv

dubai international (dXb) is not just well connected by air – it also has excellent ground transport connections. Read on to discover your options for getting into the city and beyond from the world’s second busiest airport. words nusrat ali

ach year over 10 million happy holiday-makers make a beeline for the sunshine emirate, looking forward to visiting Dubai’s many attractions and landmarks. While arriving in a new city is always exciting, it can also be challenging. The first question most tourists find themselves asking is how do we get to our booked hotels and resorts and then around the city? It is reassuring therefore to know that the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013-2014 has rated the UAE’s ground transport network 8th in the world. And nowhere is this accolade given more justice than in Dubai, which has an extensive public transport system comprising buses, taxis and the sleek Dubai Metro. All public transportation in the emirate is looked after by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). In conjunction with the RTA, Dubai Airports offers its passengers reliable, convenient and economical ways to head out into the city and even between the airport’s terminals. BUSES With over 1500 buses crisscrossing the city, the bus service is a great way to reach your destination. For the convenience of passengers, bus stations have been set up outside each of DXB’s terminals: at T1 and T3 they are located near the Metro station, while T2’s is just outside the terminal building. The air-conditioned bus stops have route maps to help commuters plan their journey. The RTA also runs two buses from DXB to help passengers travel into the city. Airport Bus 401 runs from the airport to the Deira section of Dubai via DNATA Airline Centre, Al Maktoum Road, Deira Taxi Station and Al Sabkha Bus Station. Airport Bus 402 passes through Deira City Centre, Al Karama, Golden Sands, Al Mankhool and Al Ghubaiba Bus Station. All buses are air-conditioned, have comfortable seating with seats reserved for ladies and the elderly, and are also equipped with ample baggage holds. These buses serve the most popular corridors in the city, providing easy access to more than 80 hotels and furnished apartments. Fares start at Dhs1.80 and go up to Dhs5.80 for a single one-way trip. TAXI A taxi is one of the most popular ways to get around the city. Special airport taxis are available outside each terminal and are easily distinguishable by their DXB signage. Passengers can choose between sedans and station wagons (suitable for those travelling with bulky luggage) and even ladies’ taxis. The pink-roofed ladies’ taxis are perfectly suited for lone female travellers. All taxis are metered and fares start at Dhs20 for sedans and Dhs25 for station wagons and ladies’ taxis.

GET YOUR NOL CARD TODAY If you are planning to use the Metro, bus or water bus services in Dubai, it is worth getting a Nol card. This pay-as-you-go card lets you pay for various RTA transport services in Dubai with a single card. RTA offers different types of cards to meet everyone’s unique travel requirements. The Blue card is a personalised card that can be loaded with up to Dhs500 of credit. It costs Dhs70 which includes Dhs20 of e-purse credit. The Blue card is ideal for frequent travellers. The Silver card is perfect for visitors as it can be used immediately. The card costs Dhs20, of which Dhs14 is the e-purse value. This card can be loaded with up to Dhs500 of credit. The Gold card has the same features as the Silver card but gives commuters privileged access to Dubai Metro’s Gold Class seats. The Red ticket is a paper-based ticket that has no e-purse functionality and can be used for a maximum of 10 trips.

DXB TERMINAL TRANSFERS Passengers who need to transfer between terminals will be relieved to know that DXB operates free inter-terminal shuttle buses. The shuttle service runs between Terminals 1, 2 and 3 every 20 minutes, 24 hours a day, and takes between 5 and 10 minutes. You can also use the Dubai Metro to shuttle between Terminals 1 and 3. AL MAKTOUM INTERNATIONAL at DWC Two city bus routes, F55 and F55A, serve Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC). F55 starts from Ibn Batuta Mall and makes several stops, including The One&Only Royal Mirage hotel, Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort & Spa, Al Waha Beach Hotel and Hilton Jumeirah hotel. Route F55A runs from Al Satwa Bus Station and passes through areas such as Hilton Beach Club, Jumeira Beach Garden, Jumeirah Mosque, Umm Suqueim Garden, Wild Wadi and Burj Al Arab. SKY BUS Getting to your hotel is now even more convenient thanks to Sky Bus, RTA’s latest addition to the city’s public transport offerings, which will provide shuttle services to 26 hotels across the city. Priced at Dhs15 per person, the shuttle service is currently being offered at T3 and will be extended to T1 soon. The bus has been designed with the traveller in mind and has large baggage holds and free WiFi. Travellers can also buy fresh snacks and juices on board. To enjoy the Sky Bus services, passengers need to purchase a Nol card from the RTA information kiosks at DXB. The buses operate every 30 minutes and passengers can choose from four routes which cover Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Barsha 1, Karama, Mankhool and Garhoud. 32

SHUTTLE FROM DXB TO DWC As DXB undergoes its scheduled runway maintenance, selected airlines have shifted their operations to DWC. Dubai Airports is offering a complimentary shuttle service between the two airports until 20 July 2014. The DXB-DWC shuttle stops are located at T3 Departures (in front of Entrance 3); T1 Departures (in front of Area F) and at the kerbside between Departures and Arrivals at T2. At DWC, the shuttle stop is in front of the Departures area near the terminal building. Shuttles depart every 30 minutes. The 49-seater luxury bus is equipped with toilets for passenger comfort. The two airports are roughly 65km apart and the average trip duration is two hours. in full swing Since the opening of the new passenger terminal on 27 October 2013, passenger volumes at Al Maktoum International at DWC continued to gain momentum, with 102,137 passengers passing through the airport in the first three months of the year. This was the first full quarter of operations since the new terminal was opened. “Passengers appreciate the simplicity of using the new terminal, which allows them to move quickly from the kerb of the airport to the gate,” says Paul Griffiths, CeO of Dubai Airports. More and more airlines are now operating at Dubai’s newest hub: Qatar Airways is the latest international carrier to take advantage of the new facilities and, starting from March, it has been offering twice-daily flights to Doha. The leading airline joins Wizz Air, Al jazeera Airways and Gulf Air, whom already operate through the new airport. The steady growth registered in the first three months of this year is expected to continue, and from 1 May this year DWC has been hosting several services that have temporarily moved flights
from Dubai International, where essential refurbishment and upgrading work is being carried out on both runways. Among the airlines to have moved is flydubai, now operating flights from DWC in addition to the ones regularly scheduled from Dubai International’s Terminal 2. Freight volumes at DWC are also enjoying healthy growth: 76,816 tonnes passed through the airport in the first quarter of 2014, marking a 42.3 per cent increase over the 53,974 tonnes achieved in the same period last year. The rising numbers are due to the increase in weekly scheduled freighter flights, which now number more than 60. emirates Skycargo is the latest to have moved all dedicated freight services to the airport, while Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, ethiopian Airlines and Cargolux have all moved dedicated freighter flights to DWC since the end of last year. As a result of this increased activity, aircraft movements in the first quarter of 2014 reached 9,965 – a staggering increase of 142.8 per cent compared to the 4,104 movements in the first quarter of 2013. june 2014

LIFE-CHANGING OPENING Over 700 children in Haiti will now be able to enjoy free education and an amazing US$1.5 million sport complex thanks to donations by Dubai Duty Free, an active supporter of the Hand in Hand for Haiti project, a charity set up after the country's 2010 earthquake. The Dubai Duty Free Sports Complex, completed thanks to a US$500,000 donation by DDF, has been officially inaugurated on the campus of the Lycée Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable in Pont Leocan, near the city of Saint-Marc. The school, which offers free education, opened in 2011 with just over 150 pupils, but today already caters for 250 children aged 3 to 8, and a further 50 are due to join this autumn. The hurricane-proof, anti-seismic, sustainable school can cater for over 700 students, ranging from preschool to baccalaureate ages, providing trilingual education (in Creole, French and English). The facility also provides two meals a day for the students, as well as after-school programmes and day camps during holiday breaks. The DDF Sports Complex includes an international regulation football pitch with artificial turf, a basketball court, two volleyball courts

and a 400-metre-long six-lane running track. The outstanding sports and leisure facility will also be open to other schools and the wider local community. The new state-of-the-art sports complex was inaugurated in the presence of Michel Martelly, President of Haiti, along several other members of the local government, as well as officials from the DDF Foundation, Estée Lauder Companies, DFASS (Duty Free Air and Ship Supply), Starboard, Onboard Media and The Moodie Report. WINNERS CIRCLE Teaming up seems to be a successful trend, according to the latest Dubai Duty Free (DDF) Millennium Millionaire results: Abdul Rahiman Mundanpulakkal Hameed will share with 32 work colleagues the US$1 million he won with ticket No. 4080/Series 165, while Khalid Noushad has 14 colleagues with whom he’ll divide his US$1 million prize, won with ticket No. 4109/Series 164.
AWARDS ACCOLADE DDF has recently received four international awards based on passenger satisfaction and the choice of leading associations in the travel industry field. FABULOUS FOURTEEN Another repeat success for DDF comes from the Duty Free News International (DFNI) Asia/Pacific Awards for Travel-Retail Excellence, where it has been named for the 14th time Middle East Travel Retailer of the Year. The ceremony, held at the Tax Free World Association exhibition in Singapore, unveiled the results of online voting forms sent to a special industry ‘academy’ of retailers, suppliers, agents and distributors serving the region, recognising excellence in service, innovation and quality within the airport retail field. THIRTEEN IS A CHARM Dubai Duty Free is the Best Airport in the Middle East for Duty Free Shopping, according to the Business Traveller Middle East Awards, a title DDF has now won for 13 years in a row. The award, decided by the readers of Business Traveller magazine, follows record sales of US$1.8 billion in 2013 for the airport retailer, which has been acknowledged as the largest single airport duty free operation in the world. The award ceremony, organised by Motivate and Panacea Publishing, was held just ahead of the Arabian Travel Market Exhibition, at the newly opened Waldorf Astoria Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, in the presence of more than 300 travel industry executives. LONDON’S BEST Dubai Duty Free took centre stage also at the Europe Business Assembly’s Socrates Award Ceremony, where it was named Best Enterprise, while Colm McLoughlin, DDF Executive Vice Chairman, was named Best Manager of the Year for his 30-year-long world-class leadership. The awards are organised and presented by the International Socrates Committee of the Europe Business Assembly which is supported by non-governmental organisations, professional and creative bodies from around the world. 40

iscovered at eight years old, Obaid Al Jasmi has been making headlines ever since with a long list of national record-breaking times. The passion for swimming runs in his family: Al Jasmi and his brothers gained a Guinness World Record as the first set of siblings to compete together as a foursome in the Short Course Worlds. Despite his busy schedule, Al Jasmi also takes part in charity events, such as the Wild Wadi's Swim, in support of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). After undergoing surgery for a heart ailment, Al Jasmi is now back on top form. To see him in action, you can follow him around the world in the FINA Swimming World Cup 2014 (in Dubai from 31 August to 1 September) or cheer him at the 12th FINA World Swimming Championships in Doha in December.
How did you become a professional swimmer? I started by coincidence, but I became a professional with hard work and sacrifice, winning many competitions and striving to be one of the best swimmers in the world.
How was the passion for sports encouraged in your family? Having brothers that also swim brought 74

a challenging yet positive spirit to home, which encouraged us to give everything we have, both in training and in the races. This can also encourage the younger generation in our family to take up swimming like we did.
How was your Olympic experience? Being in the Olympic Games was a dream come true. I swam at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. I was very close to London 2012 but I lost the opportunity because of my heart surgery. I will try my best to be in Rio de Janeiro 2016.
Can you tell me more about the Wild Wadi's Swim? It's a great charity swim around the Burj Al Arab – one of the best hotels in the world: I really feel happy when I help people in need.
How do you prepare before a competition? I try to relax, I focus on my training, I eat healthily, I listen to my coach's advice and I try not to think much about it until 15 minutes before the race.
How do you overcome jet lag? I stay hydrated and I set my watch to the
time at my destination as soon as I am flying. This helps me to mentally prepare for the new time zone. When competing, we travel 10 days in advance to overcome the jet lag.
What is your favourite holiday destination, and why? Switzerland, especially Interlaken. I loved the Jungfraujoch mountain, which is 3,454 metres above sea level; I really enjoyed the view and the snow.
What would be your main advice for keeping fit whilst on a long plane journey? Drink water, and encourage blood circulation while seated by lifting and rotating toes, ankles and knees. Repeat these exercises every hour, especially on a long journey. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they dehydrate the body, and only eat lightly and when hungry.
What is your favourite sports venue in Dubai? The Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex (HSC) is one of the best sport venues in the world: there you can watch a wide range of sporting events. dv
