AhLAN WA SAhLAN! Dubai’s life signs are extremely healthy: real estate prices are rising, unemployment is falling, consumer expenditure is growing and tourist revenues are encouraging. And the emirate’s 800+ metre tall Burj Khalifa is said to be 80 per cent occupied, enhanced by an influx of international investments in recent months. Furthermore, international financial woes and challenges do not appear to be reducing people’s appetite for travel – Dubai is enjoying a steady growth in the number of new arrivals each year… In the second annual Global Destinations Index released by MasterCard, Dubai took eighth place in terms of inbound international visitors, outranking New York, Amsterdam, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and Beijing. It’s estimated that 8.8 million international travellers will visit Dubai in 2012, making it the number eight destination city in the world. According to the MasterCard survey, visitors are expected to spend US$ 8.8 billion in Dubai this year – an increase of 15.3 per cent over 2011. The majority of Dubai’s visitors are expected to fly in from London (803,000 people), Paris, Munich, Frankfurt and Kuwait. Those from London are also said to be the highest spenders – recording an average of US$ 1,495 per visit. London, which is very much in the global spotlight following the highly successful hosting of the London Olympics 2012 and the ongoing Paralympics, is once again the world’s top destination city, with an enviable 16.9 million inbound passengers expected in 2012. Paris is expecting 16 million visitors, Bangkok 12.2 million, Singapore 11.8 million and Istanbul 11.6 million. Meanwhile, the UAE capital Abu Dhabi emerged as the world’s fourth fastest growing city in terms of visitors, beating Istanbul, Singapore and Toronto. With the downturn and summer behind us Dubai is poised to take the proverbial bull by the horns and forge forward in its quest to be the regional’s financial centre and business hub. Welcome back! US$92.56 per sq ft. Abu Dhabi, the UAE's capital, on the other hand, has seen a stunning 16.7 per cent plunge in office rental rates over the past year. The increase in momentum was reflected in property prices which rose nearly two per cent in the second quarter, according to the new Knight Frank Prime Global Cities Index. Prices rose 5.6 per cent over the past six months, the index said, adding that 12-month price growth stood at 2.3 per cent. The increase in prices puts Dubai in 12th position in the index – out of 27 real estate markets around the world. Perhaps Rajesh Kumar, chief executive officer of MyHiringClub. com is best able to summarise the situation: “Economic recovery and rising oil prices should help accelerate business and employment demand in the GCC.” This is all good news for talented, experienced professionals who come to Dubai to do business.

And it’s perhaps this enterprising nature, added to lifestyle and climate that makes Dubai officially the best place to live and do business in the Middle East. For employers, the news that the cost of office space is reasonable when compared to other capital cities provides further incentive for setting up business, or relocating offices. Hong Kong and London are the world’s most expensive office rental markets while the only Middle Eastern city to feature in the top 30 was Dubai, in 25th place, with overall occupancy costs coming in at

irls’ general appearances, "Should be modest and tidy. With discreet, minimal jewellery, and no make-up. Hair tied back. No torn clothing or other extremes." So reads the dress code to one of the UK’s most elite girls’ schools – Cheltenham Ladies College. The guidelines follow a summer of rule reiteration for seasonal, society events such as Wimbledon and Royal Ascot. At the latter for instance, “Dresses and skirts must fall just above the knee, Straps must be at least one inch thick, Hats must be worn and Trouser suits are welcome, but must be full length and of matching material and colour.” Don’ts include the banning of fascinators from the Royal Enclosure, as well as shorts and the bearing of midriffs. Many social commentators in the UK have applauded this return to etiquette, and with it, a blatant anti-Wag culture, where less is definitely not more.

Earlier this year a Twitter campaign in Dubai sparked a media storm, and quite rightly, a focus on the appropriate dress codes for foreign visitors and expatriate residents, and whether local customs and values were assimilated. The campaign which began with a hashtag - #UAEDressCode - and the Twitter handle @uaedresscode has evolved into an account with more than 600 followers. It’s worth bearing in mind that the local population comprises only 11 per cent of a total of 8.2 million and that they are incredibly tolerant of western dress. In fact the Twitter campaign has brought a lot of the residents together – whether Filipino, Asian, American, European or British – who all object to some of the more outrageous clothing favoured by transit holidaymakers. A key part of the debate has been the definition of decency and what comprises a universal dress code in a country with more than 100 nationalities. Those involved in the dress code campaign urge trying to respect or share the same values as their host country. In general most normal clothing is tolerated and accepted as long as it is not too outrageous. Most offenders are tourists so it’s best to follow a few guidelines and also use your own common sense when dressing and going to public places. A rule of thumb is that it’s better to cover knees and shoulders and everything in between. And as for the seasoned travellers’ approach to this debate? Do remember that the UAE places a premium on modesty and decorum Do dress with more modesty than usual during the holy month of Ramadan. Do dress appropriately in business attire when entering government buildings or visiting offices and hospitals. Do wear whatever you like in nightclubs and bars. Do remember there are no ‘fashion police’ in Dubai. Members of the public may make complaints and if a situation is not resolved then the police will be called. Do remember that some malls are more lenient than others. Some malls may issue a warning for wearing spaghetti straps and a low cut t shirt. Do remember that Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah are more conservative emirates than Dubai or Abu Dhabi Do remember to cover your hair when entering a Mosque, though otherwise covering your face and hair as a woman is not necessary Do be aware that for a man to wear very short shorts or in some cases cyling shorts may result in a warning or fine Do remember that “offending public decency” can result in a month in jail and then deportation

Don’t wear t-shirts with provocative slogans which are bound to upset others Don’t cross dress if you are a man, even in jest, as this may lead to an arrest. t’s a truth universally acknowledged that you can take the UAE resident out of the UAE but not the UAE out of the resident, so on holiday favourite pastimes include shopping (42%), trying out new restaurants (32%) and chilling out on the beach (30%). The survey also shows that they’re careful travellers who show substantial concern for the environment, opting for an eco-friendly destination or hotel. While the hotel credentials may be a priority, one real problem is detaching themselves from work and emails, with 67% on the grid most of the holiday. On the whole though they’re a bunch of savvy tourists who can spot a scam artist and are very careful with their property; only 7% have been pickpocketed or robbed. The aim of the amusing survey by LivingSocial is to help people around the world find, share and enjoy great local deals and new experiences whilst on holiday. dv

globalvista From new world skydiving record pursuits to glamorous new hotels on the edges of the world’s highest pistes – Globalvista flies high this month… words Catherine belbin More than 5,600 metres above Illinois, 138 skydivers joined hands and formed a massive 45-metre wide human snowflake-like formation, propelling themselves into the world record books. By simultaneously jumping out of six aircraft at an altitude of 18,500 feet and at speeds of 220mph (355km/h), the daredevil thrill seekers broke a new vertical skydiving record. Following 15 jumps over three days the 138-member group from Skydive Chicago surpassed the previous record of 108 skydivers, which had been set in 2009 over three days and 15 attempts. Video and still footage of the record-breaking jump has been submitted to the Federation Aeronautique Internationale jury. The Cube, the iconic bubble wrap-esque Aquatic Centre where the Beijing Olympics was held, has undergone a make-over and just re-opened as the Happy Water Park – Asia’s newest and biggest water park. Following a 10-month renovation at a cost of US$ 20 million, The Cube ‘s Olympic pools and spectator stands have been transformed into a colourful emporium of thrilling water rides that include a lazy river and 13 water slides with titles such as Bullet, Bowl, Speed Slide and Tornado. For those who want the ultimate aquatic adrenaline rush the Aqua Loop is a must: this ride literally pulls the floor from under your feet, sending you freefalling from the top of a 12-metre red tube into a aquatic roller coaster! A huge jellyfish is suspended from the ceiling of the park, whose interior design was inspired by the fantastic set of the Avatar movie. Paying tribute to the Mughal Dynasty, Fairmont Jaipur Hotels has made its debut in India’s so-called Pink City. The 255-room luxury hotel that opened in August is situated at the heart of India’s Golden Triangle – home to historic palaces such as the iconic Taj Mahal, the Amber and Jaigarh Forts and the Jantat Mantar Observatory. Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, which manages over 60 leading properties globally including New York’s The Plaza, the Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai and the Makkah Clock Royal Tower in Saudi Arabia, will also open new properties in Kiev and Manila this year. Dubai’s multiple award-winning airline Emirates recently announced that it will offer daily flights to Phuket, Thailand soon. From December Emirates will fly direct to the country’s largest island on the Andaman Sea, which is an increasingly popular holiday destination. Emirates also flies daily to the Thai capital Bangkok. The new destination for skiers this winter will be the Alpina Gstaad, the first luxury hotel to be built in the quintessential Swiss mountain resort in 100 years. With hill top views over Saanenland, the 56-room, US$ 37 million luxury development also has two apartments and two chalets. The renowned Japanese restaurant MEGU will make its European debut as part of the hotel’s F&B mix, which also includes a traditional Swiss stubli. The 5-star luxury hotel, which will have a 2,000 square metre Six Senses Spa, a 25-metre swimming pool and a private cinema, is scheduled to open in December. dv

BUSES The three terminals of Dubai International are interconnected by a free bus shuttle service, allowing passengers who need to hop between terminals to do so without any inconvenience. But to venture into the city there is the public bus service, and with a recent report by the RTA revealing that the punctuality rate of Dubai’s bus service has jumped from 19 per cent to 80 per cent in the past two years, you are guaranteed a great service. The Airport Road (D89) leads directly into Dubai’s city centre, which is a 10-minute drive away. Bus stations are located opposite both terminals and these buses serve all parts of Dubai, departing every 10 minutes between 6am and 10pm. Bus numbers 4, 11, 15, 33 and 44 connect with Terminal 1, while bus number 2 connects with Terminal 2. Dubai International also has its own special buses that provide services to the most popular corridors in the city centre. Most hotels also provide shuttle buses that are well connected to the public transport system.

With the rise in the number of transit passengers at Dubai International, the Big Bus Company launched a groundbreaking initiative in 2010 to allow these visitors to see Dubai while waiting for their onward connections. The aim is to provide a window on the city, with the goal of encouraging passengers to return for a longer stay in the future. Departing from and returning to the airport, the Big Bus tours, with open-topped and fully air-conditioned buses, depart frequently and each tour lasts two hours. It’s a great way to see the city and use the transit time in a meaningful way.

SHUTTLE BUS Dubai International operates a shuttle bus service between Terminals 1, 2 and 3, linking all parts of the airport. The airport shuttle bus runs between T1 and T3. The city bus service stops outside each terminal. Airport buses serve over 80 hotels and furnished apartments in the city centre.

TAXIS A taxi stand outside the arrivals hall is open 24 hours a day and there are three different types of cars available – sedans, station wagons (suitable for bulky baggage) and the Pink taxis (driven by women drivers and suitable for women passengers). Limousine services are also available.

THE DUBAI METRO The world’s longest driverless Metro line, the Red Line has stations at Terminal 3 and Terminal 1. The trains currently run at 10-minute intervals on the Red and Green lines to stations located across the city, between the hours of 6am and 11pm during the week and from 2pm to midnight on Fridays. With special carriages for individuals with special needs, women and gold-class users, these Wi-Fi enabled monorails are the best option for smooth and hassle-free travel across the city’s popular destinations and shopping areas.

To use the Dubai Metro, a travel card (called NOL) can be purchased at the station before each journey, credit can be topped up as required, and all day travel passes can be purchased for as little as Dhs14. In conjunction with Dubai Taxi, the Road Transport Authority (RTA) has recently launched a taxi booking service for Metro users. By simply sending an SMS and the code of the station you are using to 4774, passengers can now ensure a taxi is waiting for them once they leave the Metro. hen Concourse 3 opens in the first quarter of next year it will cater solely for Emirates A380 flights and will be spread over a staggering 500,000 square metres and 10 levels. It will increase the airport’s capacity from 60 million passengers per annum to 75 million and meet the demand for more gates able to accommodate Emirates' growing fleet of A380s. The new building will have entire floors dedicated to business and first-class passengers, allowing them to board directly from the lounge facilities. Of prime importance in such a facility are the retail and food outlets, and Dubai Airports has just announced the full list of food and beverage concepts passengers can look forward to sampling. These range from Giraffe, the popular international family restaurant that will open its first outlet in the Middle East at Dubai International, to more familiar brands such as Paul. There will be a total of 16 food outlets and bars. “As the quality and choice of food and beverage outlets is an increasingly important measure of any airport’s overall reputation, we considered it essential to provide the right mix of trusted brands appropriate to Dubai International’s diverse passenger

base,” said Eugene Barry, senior vice-president commercial at Dubai Airports. “We believe that we have come up with a portfolio that will not only ensure high standards of quality, value and service, but will also inject excitement into a very special terminal. We hope that our customers’ experience on-board the Emirates A380 will be reflected through the environment on the ground.” The final food outlets were selected through a highly competitive process bringing Concourse 3 in line with the cosmopolitan profile of the passengers who will use the facility. There are also several new brands to Dubai, including Umaizushi Bistro and Picnic, as well as Costa Metropolitan – a more urban version of the already popular Costa Coffee. UAE brand Wafi Gourmet will add local flavour and hospitality to the international environment. The full list of concessions consists of Paul, Umaizushi Bistro, Picnic, Wafi Gourmet, Carluccio’s, Cho Gao, Pulp Juice Bar, McDonalds and McCafe, Shake Shack, Costa Metropolitan, Starbucks, Le Pain Quotidien, Giraffe, Heineken Lounge, Jack’s Bar & Grill and Moet & Chandon Champagne Bar. Rest of the WoRld Wins Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup if there were an ‘Olympic’ stadium for horseracing it would have to be ascot, where a crowd of 30,000 gathered on 11 august for the Shergar Cup, the international jockeys’ competition, which dubai duty Free has been sponsoring for a decade. The racing comprised a six race card and a stellar line-up of champion riders. For the first time a Girls’ Team also participated. Hayley Turner from britain, Chantal Sutherland from the uSa and Emma-Jayne Wilson from Canada took on The Rest of the World, Europe and a combined Great britain & ireland team. Yutaka Take, captain of the Rest of the World, is the Japanese champion and he teamed up with aaron Gryder from america and Matthew Chadwick from Hong Kong. Great britain and ireland were represented by Kieren Fallon and Johnny Murtagh, plus the up-and-coming James doyle. Team Europe comprised champions andreas Suborics (Germany), Cristian demuro (italy) and Captain Frankie dettori, who were much favoured to win. Chadwick picked up the dubai duty Free ‘Ride of the day’ award judged by former derby-winning jockey John Reid MbE. Medals and trophies were handed out to his Rest of the World team-mates Take and Gryder for their combined success in winning the competition. “We are delighted to be able to play our part in bringing some of the sport’s top riders together to compete on one of the world’s greatest stages,” Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman, ddF, Lt said of the event. InternatIonal Weekend at neWbury The two-day International Weekend at Newbury (September 21-22) sees the culmination of Dubai Duty Free's extensive annual sponsorship programme of thoroughbred horse racing. The traditional highlight is the Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes, a six-furlong contest named after the 1971 Epsom Derby hero, and designed to attract horses with Classic race potential. Dubai Duty Free's Executive Vice Chairman, Colm McLoughlin, said, “The race programme at the September meeting at Newbury is of very high quality, creating plenty of media interest, and providing a platform for us to showcase Dubai as a centre of excellence for business, sport and leisure.”

The race has produced many good horses since its introduction in 1972 when it was won by Mon Fils - who went on to join racing's elite with success in the 2,000 Guineas the following year. The meeting also features the Group Three Dubai Duty Free Arc Trial, run over eleven furlongs, which went to Green Destiny in 2011. Yet another highlight is the Dubai Intenational Airport World Trophy, which also enjoys Group 3 status, and drew a field of high-class sprinters last year when the ever-popular Frankie Dettori brought home the winner, Deacon Blues. Newbury Racecourse’s poular season of concerts has been extended this year to include the Dubai Duty Free International Weekend and international singing star, Lionel Richie, will take to the stage after racing on Saturday.

As the most celebrated face of contemporary Indian cuisine today, he is a television host, author, restaurant consultant and recipient of several culinary awards. His dream of making Indian cuisine number one in the world is matched by his social responsibility and desire to ‘give back’. He has been empowering women in India, through his venture Wonderchef, to be become self-sufficient through the power of cooking and starting their own businesses. He has also been working regularly for children with autism. His website features more than 6,000 recipes has an impressive seven million viewers per month. WORDS PENNY MCCORMICK

How many languages do you speak and what’s the best method of learning languages? Hindi, English and Punjabi fluently. I can understand Marathi and Gujarati as well. I’ve found the best and quickest way to learn a language is by staying with the people and practising.

What have your world travels taught you? Travel is the best way to learn. It is not only learning about other culture and nationalities; travel teaches you to respect mankind as well as how to live better.

How do you explore a new city? I explore a new city through its food and by visiting famous restaurants, road side eateries and food markets.

Where have you been this summer? I went to Georgia (Eurasia) with my wife Alyona and we stayed for a few days in Tbilisi and then went around to nearby places like Batumi by road. There is huge potential for Indian cuisine there.

Which cooking instruments do you recommend? As I travel a lot I select the best of the cookware available. Through my company Wonderchef, we are empowering Indian women to be independent through the sales 66

of unique kitchen equipment sold directly to consumers. Personally, my most precious possession remains my own set of knives.

Which professional international chefs do you admire and why? I like the work of all contemporary chefs around the world. Recently I spent some time with world renowned chef Rene Redzepi of Noma in Copenhagen and we had some interesting cooking sessions together, which were shown on CNN.

Who were the formative influences in your career? My parents always supported me in my pursuits. My dad led by example and I try to follow in his footsteps. In the kitchen, my mother has always shown that cooking should be done with a lot of love and that it what I do always. My elder brother Rajeev is my guide and advisor, and my life partner Alyona has been giving me support and encouragement since we got married nearly two decades ago. In my formative years in ITDC, my mentor Anil Bhandari encouraged me to do something different and has led me to where I am today.

When you cook for yourself, what is your favourite dinner party recipe? I have a long list of my favourites and they will vary from biryanis to kadhi-chawal to the modern one-dish meals like laksas and pastas. And if it’s for my family, I cook whatever they order!

What is the biggest misconception you’ve encountered about Dubai? That it is too hot!

Are you a big collector of holiday souvenirs? I like to collect kitchenware from across the world.

How do you overcome jet lag? I don’t have time for jet lag.

Do you travel light? When I leave home, yes I try and travel light but on my way back, my bags are full.

What do you never leave home without? Wallet and credit cards.

What is your favourite bolt hole in Dubai? Most of my time is spent in my restaurants, namely Signature, Options and Khazana. dv
