NEW HORIZONS A new airport and hotels, theme parks, shopping malls and more are all on the horizon as the cooler post-summer climate ushers in a season of exciting new activities and opportunities… Dubai is bracing itself for a full agenda that is kick-started this month by a number of top exhibitions, including the Hotel Show, which is always a favourite of the ever-expanding tourism sector. Over five million visitors visited the emirate during the first half of this year, pushing hotel revenues, guest numbers and room occupancy rates up to all-time highs. The recent opening of the UAE’s first Oberoi Hotel, in Business Bay, brings yet another sleek option for the holidaying businessperson. Construction of the world’s largest indoor theme park, set to cover an area of 140,000 square metres, is also well under way in Dubailand. The IMG Worlds of Adventure park, featuring Marvel Comic heroes including Spiderman, the Avengers and the X-Men, is expected to open next year. The newly announced first Paramount Hotel from Damac will offer holiday-makers the opportunity to invest in a holiday residence on the increasingly popular destination of Jumeirah Waterfront. Meanwhile, a luxurious Sofitel resort is expected to open on The Palm Jumeirah in the near future, further enhancing the island development’s touristic appeal. For those keen to explore the Emirates, the stunning new Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah, less than an hour’s drive from Dubai, has just opened and another will open on The Palm Jumeirah in Dubai next year. Dubai’s second airport, Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International (DWC), is also gearing up for an end-of-October opening, when it will add significantly to Dubai’s attractiveness as an aviation hub as well as a business and leisure destination. The UAE’s bid to host the World Expo 2020 is in full swing, with the French Premier, Françoise Hollande, offering his backing. Dubai’s ambitious bid for the major international event already has the support of Bill Clinton, Bill Gates and the UK government, among others. SHAIKH MOHAMMED LAUNCHES RESEARCH CHARITY a newly-established medical charity aims to raise dhs100 million this year for research into the arabian Gulf's most prevalent medical conditions. NOW COURTING THE UAE Sports fans are in for a treat as top tennis stars head to the uaE. World number one and winner of the 2013 dubai duty Free Tennis Championships, Novak djokovic, will be returning to the uaE this winter for the Mubadala World Tennis Championships. undoubtedly, the Serb will be looking to continue his arab winning streak here. He celebrated his 4th consecutive ddF win this year and is also the reigning champ at the Mubadala event where he has never lost a match since his debut in 2011. “i’m really excited to be coming back to abu dhabi this year and it was an easy decision for me to make. The Championship is proving to be a great way to kick-start my season, and gives me the chance to get warm-weather play in against some of the best guys in tennis ahead of the australian Open,” said djokovic. Wimbledon winner andy Murray has also confirmed his attendance at Mubadala. "i've always received great support when i've played in abu dhabi and i'm looking forward to getting back on the court and trying to win the title again - like i first did back in 2009," he said. Four more of the world’s best male players will return alongside djokovic and Murray to play in the unique format created for abu dhabi - a single elimination series of matches with two players being given a bye on day one matches. The annual tournament - now in its sixth edition - sees six of the world’s top players battle it out for the uS$250,000 ‘winner takes it all’ prize. ART FOR EYES a charity art auction in dubai has helped raise dhs1.2 million to prevent and treat blindness across the globe. Forty arab and international artists donated work to the art4Sight exhibition, held to support the Noor dubai Foundation. Now in its third year, the programme is inspired by the story of a 12-year-old girl from Mali called Fatoumata, who had her sight restored thanks to surgery from the Noor dubai team. as well as offering practical support to those suffering from blindness, art4Sight aims to raise general awareness of preventable sight conditions worldwide.

AT THE PEAK a group of nine students and three teachers from the abu dhabi Women’s College, an HCT college, has become the first Emirati team to summit the 4895m peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in africa and fourth highest of the Seven Summits. battling temperatures of between 10 and 28 degrees below zero and low oxygen levels, the team completed the arduous climb in six days. Sponsored by abu dhabi’s Mubadala development and the Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies Sports academy, the trip marked the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) and is part of efforts to promote healthy lifestyle and physical fitness among Emirati girls.

CELEBRATING HOSPITALITY That dubai’s hotels are the most opulent was proved at the recent Middle East Hotel awards 2013. The city’s Jumeirah, atlantis, Hyatt and Hilton hotels went on to win some of the most coveted titles at the second edition of prestigious award ceremony. The event was held at the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel – which also went on to win the ‘best Lobby’ award. Though the Six Senses Spa in Oman took home the coveted title of best Hotel, the uaE secured the highest tally of awards overall, claiming 6 of the 11 awards presented. The Westin abu dhabi was recognised for its superb outdoor area while the remaining five awards were courted by dubai. The Middle East Hotel awards is the first event of the busy programme of The Hotel Show, which will open its doors at dubai World Trade Centre this month.

Island hoppIng Stockholm’s 14 islands are best understood by boat. Strömma offers one of the best tours: the Under the Bridges of Stockholm cruise. Over the course of almost two hours visitors pass under 15 bridges and through two locks that connect the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälaren, seeing the layout of the most important districts: Old Town, Södermalm, Lilla and Stora Essingen, Hammarby Sjöstad and Djurgården. Those with more time should take a day trip to the surrounding archipelago islands, or the Viking city of Birka.

desIgn star Founded in 1924, the design shop Svensk Tenn has a cult following of design addicts and enthusiasts from around the world. Founder Estrid Ericson recruited Austrian architect Josef Frank to become part of their original team—and is still producing his designs. The shop offers their own sought-after furnishings and textiles, and still collaborates with the world’s top artisans and designers to produce new classics.

raIse a glass Opening its doors in 2012, the Museum of Spirits is located in the two remaining 18th-century naval buildings on the island of Djurgården (near other popular attractions like the Vasa Museum, Skansen and Gröna Lund), its permanent exhibition offering a multisensory journey that explains the how vodka, schnaps and other spirits are part of the cultural life of Swedes. It also offers its own restaurant and bar that feature authentic Swedish delicacies and drinks (also non-alcoholic).

Conquer the past The Vasa Museum reveals that Swedish design expertise spans the centuries. Since its inauguration in 1990, the museum's ship masts have been a part of Stockholm’s skyline and it has become one of Scandinavia’s most visited museums. Home to the only 17th-century warship ship that is almost completely intact, here visitors can peruse exhibitions that document the origin and recovery of the ship, and see the intricately designed sculptures with Roman emperors, Greek gods and Gothic warriors meeting mermaids, angels and demons, and as well as over 60 lions.

ir travel can be tiresome for even the most seasoned travellers. Walking distances and long queues for check in or document checks can take the fun out of travelling. DXB – currently the world’s second busiest airport for international passenger traffic – understands the need for all passengers to complete their travelling formalities in the minimum time possible. At DXB passengers will find not only state-of-the-art facilities but also cutting-edge technologies that have been seamlessly incorporated to make travelling through this mini-city of an airport a breeze.

You can apply for the eGate card at any of the GDRFA offices which can be found at DXB or in the Dnata offices on Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai Media City, Dubai International Financial Centre and Jebel Ali Free Zone. The applicant has to be physically present at the GDRFA office along with his/her original passport (with at least six months' validity). The smart gate card costs Dhs200 and is valid for two years.

SIMPLIFIED SECURITY CHECKS

REDUCED CHECK-IN TIME The starting point of any journey is the check-in process. DXB offers passengers a variety of ways to avoid queues and cut down on processing time. One of these is the common check-in desks at all the terminals, which means that passengers can check-in at any counter and do not have to search for dedicated airline desks. Passengers can also beat the queues by checking-in online or using the self-check-in kiosks located in the departures halls of all the terminals. Passengers with baggage then just need to approach the quick-baggage drop counters, while those carrying only hand luggage can proceed directly to Immigration.

While security checks are of utmost importance, it is universally agreed that they can be effective without being time-consuming. DXB has now done away with the screening of luggage prior to check-in in all terminals. The security-check has been made easier with the introduction of the automatic tray return system which means no more looking for trays as you approach security – they are automatically queued up for you. Even the roller beds have been extended so that you have more time to prepare for the security check. Once you have passed through the check point and pick your belongings, the tray then automatically goes back to the start point for the next passenger.

EASY IMMIGRATION Passport control has traditionally been a time-consuming process. DXB’s smart eGates go a long way in cutting down time taken for the immigration process. The smart eGates allow passengers to clear immigration formalities in 20 seconds flat using their passports, ID cards or eGate cards. Head to the gate and just swipe your card or passport. The gate then uses facial and eye recognition technology to identify and verify the user and compare the biometric data with the traveller's details saved in the system. First-time users will have to have their travel documents verified by an immigration official. Once the checks are made, the gate opens automatically for travellers to pass through to the baggage reclaim areas. Currently, the smart gates are available only for passengers travelling through Terminal 3. By the end of this year, smart gates will be installed at Terminals 1 and 2 as well.

HOw TO GET YOUR EGATE CARD? Anyone who visits the UAE can apply for an eGate card. Firsttime users need to go to the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigner Affairs (GDRFA) counter after undergoing the facial and iris scan but afterwards they can simply go through the smart gate using their passport, Emirates ID or UAE eGate card.

TRAVEL SMART DXB is doing its best to make your travelling experience better. However, there are simple things you can do to ensure that your transit through the airport is smooth and pleasant. 1. Ensure that your cabin baggage complies with the set rules and allowances. Allowances vary depending upon route and class of travel. Check with your airline prior to departure. 2. Restrictions on liquids, gels and aerosols in hand baggage now apply to all customers boarding from or transiting through DXB as well as many other airports around the world. Keep in mind to: a. Not carry liquids in excess of 100ml in hand baggage b. Seal containers in a clear, re-sealable plastic bag 3. Ensure your check-in luggage does not exceed your allowance.

OPEN BOARDING The introduction of ‘open boarding’ – which means that passengers can now board flights directly from the concourse – not only reduces waiting time prior to boarding but also means that passengers no longer have to be ushered into closed boarding areas. At present, open boarding gates are available only at Terminal 2 and will be rolled to other parts of DXB gradually, including Concourse D which is currently under construction.

THE AIRPORT TRAIN AND MOVING wALKwAYS Moving walkways across major expanses of all the terminals and concourses make traversing DXB quicker and easier. The airport train - the first of its kind in the Middle East - offers a fast, smooth connection between Terminal 3 and Concourse A. The upcoming Concourse D will also have a train linking it to Terminal 1, cutting down on transfer time. dv

FLYING UP THE GLOBAL RANKINGS DXB is throttling ahead to become the world’s busiest airport. Preferred not only for its extensive global network but also for its facilities on the ground, DXB currently ranks as the world's second busiest hub. Since the beginning of 2013, DXB has moved up two positions in the global rankings, according to ACI statistics. To keep up with the demand, Dubai Airports has launched the world’s most significant airport expansion programme known as Strategic Plan 2020. SP 2020 is a US$7.8 billion ten-year master plan which outlines aggressive expansion plans for airspace, airfield, stands and terminal areas at DXB. The newly opened Concourse A, refurbishments of Terminals 2 and 1 and the upcoming Concourse D are all part of this plan. Apart from infrastructure, DXB is also constantly upgrading its passenger-based services to meet the growing demand. Later this year, Dubai Airports will launch passenger operations at Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC).

THE GROWTH CONTINUES… record passenger movements at Dubai International (DXb) and the introduction of services at Dubai World Central - Al maktoum International (DWC) prove that Dubai is the world’s preferred aviation hub.

DXB SEES 32.6M PASSENGERS IN FIRST HALF Dubai International’s (DXb) passenger traffic hit 32.6 million in the first half of this year, making it the busiest six months in the airport’s record-studded history, according to a report by airport operator Dubai Airports. A total of 5,537,908 passengers transited through DXb in June, an increase of17.5% from the 4,714,746 who passed through the airport in June 2012. since the beginning of the year, DXb has handled passenger traffic in excess of five million each month bringing the total number to 32,662,103 – an increase of 16.9% over the same period last year.the average monthly passenger traffic recorded in the first six months of the year stood at 5.44 million compared to 4.65 million during the corresponding period in 2012.

DWC IS EMIRATES, AIR FRANCE-KLM FREIGHTER HUB Dubai World Central – Al maktoum International (DWC) will witness continued growth in 2013 with emirates skycargo and Air France-KLm introducing daily cargo flights to that airport over the next 12 months. emirates skyCargo recently confirmed that all its dedicated freight flights will take off from its new base at DWC when it opens in may 2014 while Air France-KLm will relocate its regional hub to the airport from August this year. DWC is now also Air France-KLm-martinair Cargo’s new middle east Freighter hub. From August 1 2013, Air France-KLm as started operating 14 weekly freighter flights to and from DWC. the main hub will connect flights between europe, Asia, Africa, India and the carrier’s middle east freighter stations in muscat, Doha, bahrain, Dammam and Kuwait. “the introduction of daily scheduled cargo flights by emirates skyCargo as well as Air France-KLm will provide a significant boost to growth,” said Dubai Airports CeO paul Griffiths.

Year to date aircraft movements totalled 182,911, an increase of 7.4% over the same period in 2012. During the first half of 2013, air cargo volumes rose 10.2% compared to the same period in 2012. “the first half this year has been very satisfying with doubledigit growth across all markets, boosted by the launch of 84 new services to 25 destinations. A major driver of growth was emirates airline’s tie-up with Qantas and consequent launch of the Australian carrier’s operations into Dubai. A number of major events are lined up for the remainder of the year – including the opening of the passenger operations at Dubai World Central-Al maktoum International (DWC) in October followed by the Dubai Airshow 2013 in November – making the second half even more promising,” said paul Griffiths, CeO of Dubai Airports.

STYLISH FINISH TO DDF RACING SEASON After sponsoring some of the most exciting European horse races such as the DDF Irish Derby, DDF Shergar Cup and DDF Stakes, the world’s leading airport retailer will end its international racing sponsorship season with the DDF International Weekend at Newbury. The two-day meeting – known for attracting bumper crowds – will be held on September 20 and 21 and will be graced by leading owners and trainers along with top horses and jockeys competing not only for glory but also huge prize money. The event will be DDF's second visit to Newbury this year with the multi-award winning retailer having sponsored the 'Spring Trials' meeting in April. Though DDF sponsors several races during the weekend, the traditional highlight of the Newbury meet is the Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes, an important Group 2 event for two-year-olds that is run over six furlongs. The much-awaited race commemorates Mill Reef, winner in 1971 of the Derby, Eclipse Stakes, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Over 29,000 race enthusiasts flocked to the Ascot Racecourse to watch the highly anticipated Dubai Duty Free (DDF) Shergar Cup - the world’s premier international jockeys’ competition. The challenge saw 12 top riders, male and female, from the world’s top racing nations battle over six races in teams of four representing Great Britain & Ireland, Rest of the World, Europe and the ‘Girls Team’ featuring the world’s top female riders. This year the Shergar Cup was lifted by French ace Gerald Mosse who was leading Team Europe. Mosse also picked up the DDF Ride of the Day Award for his victory aboard Blue Skies in the Shergar Cup Classic, and the Silver Saddle for top individual rider. French jockey Ioritz Mendizabal and German veteran Andrash Starke were the other jockeys in Team Europe, who amassed 91 points. Great Britain & Ireland came in second place with 61, Rest of the World scored 46 and ‘The Girls’ came in fourth with 40 points. KING OF COUTURE He’s dressed Lady Gaga, Chris Brown, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and Sofia Vergara. Michael Cinco draws inspiration from Hollywood, London, Paris and Russia to design what he calls ‘couture gowns’. dv talks to the Dubai-based Filipino designer.

Michael Cinco woman may not be born into royalty but she’d better be married into it,” says the designer whose creations have been the highlight of many international fashion and entertainment events, the most recent being Paloma Faith’s Swarovski crystals gown at New York’s Met Gala – the fashion event of the year. Behind her dramatic look was the talented Dubaibased designer Michael Cinco. Celebrating his 20th year in the fashion industry, Cinco also opened this year’s Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2013 with his couture collection called 'The Impalpable Dream of Russia – a collection inspired by the glamorous czarinas of the opulent Russian empire and the classic ballet, Swan Lake'. Cinco’s sartorial sense has won him many awards, including Breakthrough Designer in the 2011 New York WGSN Global Fashion Awards. He has been chosen twice as guest judge and designer on US reality show American’s Next Top Model. He moved to Dubai in 1997, following sojourns in Paris and London, and launched his own couture house in 2003.

Any plans for a new line? Right now we are in the process of making a pret-a-porter collection which is more for the young and trendy market. It still has the same Michael Cinco aesthetic but is more affordable. And I call it 'luxe couture'.

Are you planning a boutique in Dubai? Dubai has just revealed its plan to create Dubai Design District. I think it would

be nice to open a boutique in that area. Meanwhile, I am planning to open a bridal boutique in Moscow this year.

Your advice to budding designers? Fashion is not all glamour and fantasy. It is a cruel world where you will be judged, rejected and criticised. My advice is to just believe in yourself, work hard and focus on your craft. Believe that anything in this world is possible. Follow your improbable dreams.

The next fashion trend? While the '60s has been a popular expression for the past few seasons, we have never seen it appear so graphically, with a strict monochromatic palette. I think it will allow traditional new silhouettes with ethnic prints and patterns to take centre-stage for the next season.

A life-changing experience? When I appeared in America's Next Top Model for two seasons. It paved the way for me to be recognised in Hollywood where I got many celebrity clients like Paris Hilton, Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks. The other was when I won the Breakthrough Designer Award at the 2011 WGSN Global Fashion Awards in New York.

Which celebrity is a fashion disaster? Some celebrities wear outrageous outfits to get attention from people and make a fashion statement - like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj. If so-called fashion disasters helped catapult artists to fame, then I think it is ok for them to be fashion victims.

Do you travel a lot in your line of work? I travel a lot. I visit different cities to get inspiration and do research for my designs.

Where was your last holiday? Manila. I always believe that it's more fun in the Philippines. But before going to Manila I was in Paris and had a show in LA.

How do you explore a new city? I visit the museums and art galleries; watch opera, ballet and plays. Then when I get tired I sit in a coffee shop for hours and talk or watch the local people on the street.

What are your must-haves when you travel? Aside from my couture outfits...I always wear my attitude when I travel...hahaha... just kidding!

Do you travel light? Of course not! I have to bring all my couture outfits with me, even during summer.

Name a celebrity you would love to dress?

How do you overcome jetlag?

My ultimate dream is to see my favourite actress, Cate Blanchett, wearing a Michael Cinco mermaid silhouette dress on the red carpet...probably on Oscars night.

I travel most of the time so I easily adapt to the time patterns. Sometimes if it really hits me...I go to the sauna.

You never leave home without? I never leave home without my huge dark glasses.

What’s the biggest misconception about Dubai? Before, people used to think that Dubai is all about camels and desert, and that women in Dubai are conservative and have no taste or interest in fashion. But now people's impressions of Dubai is that it's all about the tallest, the biggest, the highest and the grandest.

What's your favourite place to socialize?

I usually have dinners with close friends in our favourite hang-out: Zuma. But I prefer to spend my nights alone with the music of Maria Callas, enjoying Sauvignon Blanc and caviar in my balcony, admiring the majestic Burj Khalifa. dv
