festive ensembles. One of my favourite months of the year, December is full of joy and celebration, which this year kicks off with our 40th National Day on the 2nd of the month. In paying homage to the Emirates, we asked the country’s best photographers to shoot an image they think best represents the UAE – turn to page 86 to be truly inspired… We also present the winning women from the Emirates Woman, Woman Of The Year Awards – page 103 will reveal who won, as voted by you. ‘Tis also the month to shop and this issue of EW has it all, the outfits, morning-after survival tips, fashion lover’s gift guide and the best in beauty looks and buys for the party month ahead. Have a great month.

I was horrified to read that former Prada manager Rina Bovrisse, who has nearly 20 years of experience under her belt, was fired after refusing to sack or demote women labelled as too unattractive or old. Your article The Ugly Truth also revealed how she was asked to change her hair colour and lose weight to comply with the Prada ‘look’. This is utterly shocking and goes against what women have spent the past 100 years fighting for – freedom. Thank you EW for exposing the ugly truth and hopefully uncovering, and shaming, these backward bosses! Lisa Showington, Dubai

WEB OF LIES
I think your story Web of Lies, which looked at cyber-bullying, and their link to recent suicides, was insightful. This is such an important subject and it shouldn’t be avoided! People need to be aware of this. We need to take action and do something about it. Most people who are being bullied are afraid to talk, that’s why stories like these are so crucial. I hope to read more stories like this in the future. Alana Whittman, Abu Dhabi

It was so exciting to see Eva Longoria on the cover of your magazine. I’ve been a huge fan of hers ever since her small-screen debut in Desperate Housewives. She is a true style icon, always wearing classy outfits and remaining professional, and tight-lipped, despite the recent interest in her love life. Great role model and great cover choice. Well done. I feel EW is extremely well-written and I look forward to reading it each month. However, I wish there was more variety when it came to cover stars – it'd be nice to see someone who isn’t a Western celebrity. To truly represent women in the UAE it would be fantastic to see a successful Emirati woman on the cover. This would inspire Emirati females to even greater achievement. Best wishes! s the energetic 49-year-old took a bow on his A/W11 New York runway, it was hard to believe that this was his 30th year in ‘the biz’. Honouring his tenure, Michael Kors rolled out a collection that celebrated his all-time hit pieces. The designer referenced the bricks that built his empire through the finest, all-American luxe aesthetic of cashmere, slinky silk jersey, fox furs and evening-cocktail crystals. As well as applauding his mesmerising show, the front row editors and celebrity guests, including Michael Douglas and Catherine ZetaJones, were talking, and Tweeting, about actress Bette Midler’s ukulele serenade to the fashion king, who truly warranted all the attention.

ALL PRESENT
T
his month means one thing: ‘tis the season to be gifting. And for some that means stepping into the minefield of potential mishaps that shopping for festive presents unfurls. The pressure can be overwhelming. Soon, the malls will be filled with panic stricken, hapless shoppers — and you could be one of them, half-baked gift-list in hand and a look of desperation on your face. The pursuit of the ‘perfect’ present is a dangerous game to play as there are so many rules and etiquette to consider – and after all that hard work and effort you’ve put in to choosing the right gift, it could all come crashing down with the tear of its wrapping paper. The usual questions come into play. How much is ‘too much’ to spend? Would they spend the same on you? Should you even be 64

…anD CorreCt, when it Comes to your wish list? asks EllE Timms buying for that person in the first place? And what if you’ve bought them a gift and there’s nothing for you in return? Well, that’s just embarrassing. Quite frankly, the worry and stress that comes with purchasing so many festive gifts only serves to remove all of the fun from what should be a happy holiday season. But it needn’t be that way. With so many cool and kitsch stores these days, shopping for gifts can, and should, be enjoyable – honestly! The delightful O’de Rose on Al Wasl Road in Dubai (www.oderose.com) sells super-cute stocking fillers. Its Arabic and old-Hollywood themed purses, jewellery and trinkets
are perfect treats that are small enough to send in the post. But if you must venture to the heaving malls, check out the stands selling Ecoya – they’re popping up everywhere. The deliciously scented and handcrafted candles and bodycare products from Australia are good enough to give Jo Malone a run for her money (www. ecoya.com.au). However, as with all things shopping-related, it comes down to a game of skill – a skill only women tend to possess. Therefore when it comes to your other half doing his festive shop guidance is required. Trust me unless you want that completely insensitive annual gym
membership or grotesque, albeit pricey, gem, then point him in the right direction, or at the very least drop hints. In fact, ensure you make it as simple as possible for him so that he needn’t even leave his desk to get your treats. Just tell your man to check out www.theluxuryemporium.com, a site of chic, present-perfect pieces focussing only on shoes, bags, jewellery and accessories. Now there really is no excuse for him to go wrong… or at least you’d think.

sabel Marant is the go-to designer for pared-down Parisian cool. Having launched her eponymous accessories line in 1989, followed by womenswear in 1994, the lime-light-dodging Paris native became a star of casual dressing; think oversized boyfriend jackets, fringed boots and track pants – eclectic pieces with a bohemian edge.

Your top stYle tip: A woman should feel comfortable and truly ‘herself’ in her clothes, rather than someone who follows whatever the latest trend might be. Your stYle in one sentence is... Androgynous but sexy. For A/W11, I'm wearing an oversized jacket, sexy mini skirts and fringed boots. how do You define french stYle? Unique, carefree and elegant. French people love to mix chic and basic clothes. They do it so well that they end up looking very casual and decontractée (relaxed) – when in fact they’ve put a lot of effort into their look! shoes or bags? I strongly believe accessories are part of a silhouette – a shoe is a key part of the look. It took me quite a long time to create what I consider the perfect shape – the pointed toe in my previous collections. This season I wanted to create boots with great allure, so I added fringing that moves when you walk. favourite music I listen to music all of the time. My iPod is always fully charged! Recently, I’ve been listening to ESG’s Dance, Jungle Boy by Bow Wow Wow, and I’m an Indian Too by Don Armando’s Second Avenue Rhumba Band. are You a hoarder or a new season, new

wardrobe person? I’m concerned with real clothes, not something people will throw away in six months. I prefer garments you want to keep for years and always want to wear. I hate something that looks too new, so I create pieces that could be worn time and time again. has Your stYle changed at all? My style has evolved with time and in the early days I referenced my travels and foreign cultures, but today I get inspiration from much more subtle things. Your most annoYing habit... I’m unable to delegate. Your best trait: I’m a very honest person. Sometimes I think I speak too frankly, but I can’t help it. Your fashion wish list: I love my Navajo print trousers and the men’s jacket from my A/W11 collection. Right now, I’m already wearing the oversized cotton Tie & Die biker jacket from my S/S12 collection. favourite secret shopping destination: Galerie Downtown on 33 rue de Seine 75006, Paris. The owner, François Laffour, has been collecting furniture from my favourite designers for the past 28 years – I love timeless pieces like the Prouvé armchairs, Serge Mouille lamps and bookshelves by Charlotte Perriand. outside of fashion, what do You enjoY doing? I really enjoy spending quality time with my lovely family and friends. n

olf fashion. It sounds like an oxymoron, right? When most people think of fashion trends, they think of the runway, not the fairway. And, really, who can blame them? I was at a golf club last week and saw a man in his mid-30s (who had evidently turned the concept of the ‘Dubai stone’ into a franchise) sporting tightfitting white trousers and a matching belt. He looked like a backing singer in an Elvis tribute band. And the scary thing is, he wasn’t even the worst dressed man in the clubhouse. The curious world of golf – cherished by its disciples and mystifying to everyone else – remains a haven for fashion statements that would simply not be tolerated in mainstream society: Plaid trousers, visors, shapeless striped polo shirts and, most inexcusable of all, the mock turtleneck. However, if you can negotiate this minefield of fashion faux pas, it is in fact possible to play golf and look sharp at the same
swing in style finD the fashion fairway, says Golf DiGest MiDDle east eDitor, robbie GreenfielD time. Look no further than Aussie pro Adam Scott, who is also athletic, handsome and a world-class surfer in his spare time (I hate him). So if the man in your life has put some new golfing attire on his Christmas list, there are plenty of sartorial solutions that won’t force you to mentally disown him the second he reaches for his clubs. Regrettably, there's no place for a cashmere sweater in the UAE golfer’s wardrobe, but the popularity of the polo shirt in mainstream fashion means that golfers are spoilt for choice when it comes to stylish, colourful tops by labels like Lacoste, Pringle and Ralph Lauren (which even offers a bespoke ‘design-your-own’ service on its website). Pair a
bold polo with tailored, kneelength navy shorts and a classic pair of white golf shoes by Adidas or Nike and you really can’t go wrong. He might not look like Tom Ford, but compared to the rest of the golfers down the club your man will be in a class of his own. While for the ladies, there’s definitely something a little more forgiving when it comes to plaid on a pair of long, bronzed legs. And luckily the tartan army has marched into town. I hear from a fashionable friend that Burberry Prorsum, Moschino Cheap & Chic, Christian Dior and Sonia Rykiel all offer checks and plaids in various guises, and catwalk newcomer Altuzarra put a great spin on those classic Pringle of Scotland diamond sweaters, so you can look like
a professional on or off the course. However, real golf pros need some functional gear too. Both Ralph Lauren and Lacoste’s Golf range offer functionality and chic style in one nice package. A female semi-pro has just snapped up the crocodile classic – but in a men’s size, so it looks slouchy and cooler than most. It seems she does have all the gear and also some idea too. Happy swinging.

hen it came to choosing our cover star this month, we wanted someone who represented 2011. A year when more than ever we began to live our lives in the realm of social media, when fashion’s big hitters swapped the catwalk for the high street, reality TV tightened its grip on our senses and Hollywood embarked on a feeding frenzy for vampire movies, transforming fang fans from gothic cliché to the new cool kids. With this in mind, Kristen Stewart was an obvious choice. Down to earth, subtly cool, firmly in the media spotlight and beautiful, she represents the zeitgeist of the era.

Type her name into Google and you’ll find over 75.5 million results. While she might not be the conventional Tinseltown star – she’s overtly ‘unstyled’ and shuns the bleached hair and fake tan norm of her peers – her overwhelming coyness and humble attitude has seen her become one of the industry’s highest paid and most soughtafter actresses. At only 21 years old she already has over 20 films under belt, several awards and a handprint immortalised on the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Stars. So, don’t let her shyness fool you, she’s blood thirsty when it comes to her career. Before taking on her iconic role as Bella Swan in the blockbuster Twilight franchise, Kristen was impressing Hollywood heavyweights Sean Penn and Jodie Foster as a child star. After starring in Sean’s Into the Wild, the actor praised her to director Jack Scott, stating: “She’s just so alive.” Kristen’s success isn’t really surprising, she was born into the industry – her mum is a script supervisor and her dad a stage manager – yet despite being nominated for a Young Artist Award for her first ever big role (Panic Room, when she was 12) Kristen still doesn’t know what all the big fuss is about. She admits: “The sad thing is that I feel so boring because Twilight is literally how every conversation I have these days begins – whether it’s someone I’m meeting for the first time or someone I haven’t seen in a while. The first thing I want to say to them is: ‘It’s insane! And, as a person, I can’t do anything!’ But then I think to myself, damn it, shut the hell up.” Though she is slowly starting to get to grips with the media’s obsession, she explains it came too suddenly. “It really erupted,” she says. “I used to be able to walk down the street alone. [The sudden change] was a weird thing to watch.” So petrified of the attention, Kristen reluctantly reveals she’s even scared of her

ìi don't even know myself.i do want a l i t tl e bit of ti m e to real l y fig ure out what i real l y want to do” fans: “I don’t feel very comfortable on the red carpet. I look out there at a thousand people and I realise they could rush me and assassinate me. No security could protect me.” Her fears are not to be confused with arrogance, and Kristen is aware that her shyness is something she needs to work on. “I have to work at being less nervous and apprehensive about being in the public eye and try to be myself and less awkward.” She even admits had she not been a child star, she would’ve been too terrified to join the competitive and often brutal movie industry as an adult. She admits: “I don’t think I would’ve been able to be an actress had I not started when I was nine years old. I would’ve been the last person to stand up and say, ‘I’d like to star in the play.’” It’s a shame that as soon as Kristen seems to have found a real connection with Bella – the role that thrust her in the limelight – the franchise is drawing to a close, with Twilight: Breaking Dawn 78

completing the story. Yet for the actress, who admits to struggling to let go of her character, this is far from the end on a personal level. “We’ve shared a destiny together,” she says. “Sometimes your characters in films do things that you wouldn’t do. You’re not playing yourself all the time, but for Bella, somehow I could not disagree with her ever. I think we’re pretty similar at times.” However, while her bond with the film is strong, Kristen’s ready to move on. “Right now is the first time in a long time that I haven’t worked or haven’t known what I was going to be doing, and I don’t want to know. I don’t want to rush it because I want time off to see what I’m interested in. I don’t even know myself. I do want a little bit of time to really figure out what I really want to do.” From vampire to princess, Kristen – who admits to feeling more comfortable starring in independent films – is pushing the boundaries in her next role as Snow White alongside Charlize Theron and Ray Winstone in Snow White and the Huntsman, a dark adaptation of the classic fairy tale. “I didn’t grow up on fairy tales,” she explains of her next challenge. “I know everyone says the reason this thing is so cool is that we’ve all grown up with these stories and it’s a retelling. But I’m like, ‘Nah, not really. I didn’t.’ I also didn’t grow up with Twilight. So, for me, these things are sort of being put on these characters.” And while Kristen is branching away from being stereotyped as every vampire’s fantasy girl after four years, one thing
continues to connect her to Twilight – Robert Pattinson, her on-screen lover. “Their romance has evolved and matured and that’s what really comes through in this film,” she says remaining tight-lipped about their off-screen relationship, only letting slip once when admitting: “My boyfriend is English.” It’s obvious Kristen prefers to keep her private life just that, private. She’s an actress not because she wants the attention, stardom or money – she’s into it because she’s passionate about her job. In fact, Kristen plans to contribute a large portion of her personal fortune to halfway houses to help people who’ve fallen on hard times to recover and get back on their feet. “That would be amazing. Right now it’s the thing I feel most connected to.” Despite her innocent appearance and natural beauty, Kristen is a regular tomboy. The sister to three brothers she spends her down time playing golf and feels more at home in a pair of jeans and a baggy lumberjack shirt than a Balenciaga ball gown. She’s as far removed from the artificial, fame hungry starlets who fill the pages of celebrity magazines as you can get. She’s smart enough to know the value of 2011’s obsessions – be that Facebook, celebrity endorsements or reality TV – and smart enough to work with them, but not be engulfed by them. Kristen may be a product of the times and its trends, but she’s savvy enough to know that time, and trends change and move on. For that reason she represents the zeitgeist of the 21st century – and we thank her for it.
tHe next President oF France? a law 'banning' women from wearing the burqa has caused outrage in France. now, one woman is prepared to take her protest all the way to the european court of Human rights. Kenza drider tells EW why she’s taking a stand and vying for presidency
O
Written by james pearsOn
n April 11, 2011, Kenza Drider boarded a train from her home in Avignon to Paris wearing a niqab, deliberately breaking a law passed the previous day that ‘banned’ the wearing of the outfit public in France, sparking a storm of publicity. Overnight Kenza, a 32-year-old mother of four, came to embody the cultural tensions festering in that country, highlighting unease between traditional Western and Arab values. With this single act of defiance, Kenza became, and remains, a personification of the problems multiculturalism throws up in countries that pride themselves on upholding the individual’s right to freedom of expression. Certainly, they are complex problems – ones the establishment in most European countries would rather not confront. On April 9, 2011 (one day before the ‘ban’ came into effect), Kenza was one of 61 people arrested in Paris for holding an unauthorised demonstration against the impending law, outside Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. “Nothing and nobody is going to stop me wearing my niqab,” Kenza says with determination. “I am getting on with my life and if they want to send me to prison, then so be it. One thing’s for sure, I am not taking it off.” The French government moved to outlaw the niqab, or the burqa, as part of a broader law making the wearing of any item of clothing that obscures the face in public places illegal. According to Jonathan Laurence, an associate professor of political science at Boston College and author of the upcoming book, The Emancipation of Europe’s Muslims, the legislation was largely the product of internal French politics, with President Nicolas Sarkozy’s centre-right party seeking

feature/global report to defend its flank against a more hard-line right wing. However, French Prime Minister Francois Fillon recently defended the ban as simply being in keeping with national values. “The French Republic lives in a bare-headed fashion,” he said in an official government newspaper explaining the law. It was a sentiment echoed by Interior Ministry Claude Guéant who confirmed, “The ban does not target the wearing of a headscarf, head gear, scarf or glasses, as long as the accessories do not prevent the person from being identified.” For years, the French establishment has been opposed to the wearing of niqabs or burqas on the grounds that they aren’t so much pieces of clothing as tools of repression by men against women. President Sarkozy called the burqa “a sign of debasement” and Immigration Minister Eric Besson called them “walking coffins.” The French establishment argued that no woman would wear these garments of her own volition, rather that she would only wear them if she had been co-opted, or forced, to do so. Not so, says Kenza, revealing she did not wear even a headscarf in her youth, and only began wearing a niqab 13 years ago after reading that the Prophet Mohammed’s (PBUH) wives covered their faces and subsequently feeling that something was missing from her own worship. She bought her first niqab without telling her husband – in fact, she surprised him with it. She says: “There was no mosque telling me to wear it. There was no pressure from anyone. It is not a religious constraint since it is not laid down in the Qur'an or in the teachings of Islam that I have to wear a full veil. It is my own personal choice to wear a niqab. How I dress has always been my own personal choice, and it will always continue to be.” Under the current law, it is illegal to hide one’s face in public places, and people caught doing so can be fined up to 150 euros (Dhs758) and made to attend ‘citizenship courses.’ Senior police officers in France have stated publicly that the law is virtually unenforceable, and voiced concerns that it has effectively stirred up racial tensions. Kenza agrees. She says: “When President Sarkozy told the nation ‘The burqa is not welcome in France’, the president, my president, opened the door for racism, aggression and attacks on Islam. This is an attempt to stigmatise Islam and it has created enormous racism and Islamaphobia – that wasn’t the case before.” She laughs at the notion of citizenship courses and says she will never pay a fine for wearing a niqab. 82

"this is about basic and fundamental human rights and freedoms. i will go out in my veil and i will fight. i am prepared to go all the way to the european court of Human rights and i will fight for my liberty"
“This is about basic and fundamental human rights and freedoms. I will go out in my veil and I will fight. I am prepared to go all the way to the European Court of Human Rights and I will fight for my liberty. Fines do not bother me. For me, this is about women’s liberty, the liberty to wear what I like and not be punished for it. “I don’t object if women want to walk the streets half naked, or in jeans so tight you can see their underwear. But if they are allowed to
do that, why am I not allowed to cover up?” It would be easy, perhaps, to dismiss Kenza as a radical; a woman prepared to stand up to the might of the state on an issue as frivolous as clothing. However, Kenza is well versed in the arguments that rail against a democratically elected government legislating against an item of clothing simply because it does not like what it represents. “It is my personal choice to wear what I like. The same as it is your personal choice. In a country that supposedly values ideals such as freedom, democracy and human rights, what right does anyone have to tell me what I can and can’t wear? This is a very important point.” Kenza’s argument is clear; Western governments cannot have it both ways. How can they enshrine in constitutions, written or unwritten, the right of the individual to do as he or she pleases, so long as doing so is not to the detriment of others – that is, the right to express oneself freely, without fear of persecution – and yet legislate that a form of dress is unlawful because the establishment finds it offends its collective sensibilities? In a nutshell, Kenza is arguing that the right to freedom of expression is intended exactly as a safeguard against this sort of legislation, or else it is worthless. By

outlawing a form of woman’s clothing, there are many who believe the French government has both tied itself in a knot and opened itself to accusations of, at best, double standards and, at worst, racism. Naturally, this is a point the government vehemently denies, feeling their stance is far softer than what’s being reported. Interior ministry Claude Guéant says that since the law came into force in April there have been 91 incidents of women in niqab being stopped by police outside Paris and nine incidents in the Paris region. Each time, police file a report, but so far no judge has handed out a fine or citizenship course. The French justice ministry says “fewer than 10” cases are currently going through the courts and the lack of fines shows the state favours “dialogue” not punishment. However, professor of political science at Boston College, Jonathan Laurence, feels it’s a war the government really didn’t need to enter. “Fewer than 2,000 people in all of France and its possessions wear the garments,” he said. “It’s an unnecessary confrontation, this is not an epidemic.” Kenza says she loves her country. She says this love is part of the reason she is taking her stand. “This law makes the whole of France look ridiculous. I never thought I would see the day when France, my France, the country I was born in and love, the country which says it values the right of the individual to the ideals of the revolution – liberte, egalite, fraternite – would do something that so 84

obviously violates people’s freedom.” Since taking her stand, Kenza has decided to run for the Presidency of France when Nicolas Sarkozy’s term in the Elysee ends in spring next year. “I am not so concerned about winning the Presidency,” says a defiant Kenza. “Winning isn’t the point. The point is to make people see what is going on. To make everyone understand that the politicians in this country
are violating their own laws, that they are violating the very laws upon which this country is founded.” Kenza knows her chances of winning the French Presidency are slim, to put it mildly. Before she can even stand, she must get an endorsement by collecting the signatures of 500 elected officials. She knows she will be lucky if she can collect even 100. But in the lead up to the election, she will give as many interviews as she can, to publications all over the world, and by doing so she will continue to generate publicity for her cause and scrutiny of this law. “I want to raise awareness. I want everyone to know what is going on. I don’t have to win the Presidency of France to have succeeded.”

what Does the Uae meaN to yoU? When I think of the UAE
I conjure up images of rolling desert sand dunes whipped into magical corrugated shapes by the wind; camels and their curiously, clumsy gait; Islamic traditions and culture, and how they are so lovingly embraced. I also think of the diversity of the ethnic mix and how we all live together in peace and harmony… and, of course, the architecture. craZiest shoot? Engineered for men who reinvent the world piece by piece.
Portuguese Perpetual Calendar, Reference IW502306, in 18 ct red gold with dark brown alligator strap
A
s if life weren’t complicated enough already, our watchmakers develop me chanical complications that continue to break down barriers of what is technically feasible. It is a fascination with the perfectly smooth intermeshing of wheels, levers and springs that inspires our designers to achieve what lies way beyond the ordinary. IWC Schaffhausen has the capacity to develop and produce individual masterpieces of haute horlogerie such as the perpetual calendar, minute repeater and moon phase display from start to finish. This is the reason for its po sition as a leading international brand in the luxury watch segment. The Portuguese models are a far cry from the illustrious age in which Portuguese seafarers with their outstanding nautical expertise and ground breaking technical inventions, discovered new continents and oceans. Ever since the 1930s, when two Portuguese watch importers or dered wristwatches from IWC with the same precision as a deck watch, watchmaking achievement of the highest order has been part of the Portuguese watch family’s DNA.
One of the most intricate and admired com plications of them all is the precise repre sentation of the lunar period of 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 3 seconds. The moon phase display on the Portuguese Per petual Calendar Reference 5023 depicts
both the current state of the moon and its mirror image, thus showing how it appears in both the northern and southern hemi spheres. In 577.5 years, the display diverges from the actual state of the moon by just one day. And that is an impressive achievement

for a symbol on the dial that is around 700 million times smaller than the real thing. The countdown scale shows the number of days remaining before the next full moon. Another example of IWC’s mastery of movement in miniature is provided by the perpetual calen dar, which is mechanically programmed until the year 2499 and has displays for the seconds, minutes and hours, the day, date, month and the year in four digits. The bal ance completes over 12.5 billion oscillations before the century display moves just once. The century slide transforms the change from one century to the next into a minor event in its own right. For IWC, time is more than mere figures: time is a rhythm. Like the beating of our hearts. Like a waxing and waning moon. Like the barely perceptible movement of the century slide. IWC watches transform the abstract notion of time into a sensory experience. And as complicated as our watches may be, the secret of their success is quite simple: they are among the best mechanical timepieces in the world. IWC. Engineered for men.

Party TIME
‘Tis the season to adorn yourself in cocktail dresses, box clutches and plenty of sparkle WRITTEN BY ANNAH CUTHBERT
C
ome the party season, we’re expected to attend every cocktail reception we’re invited to, which is all very glamorous until those events start straight after work – what is a girl to wear? While most women will agree that finding that perfect office-to-bar outfit is a near impossible feat, Ted Baker has come to the rescue with its latest collection that is equably suitable for both the boardroom and the cocktail lounge. Selling row after row of reassuringly reliable LBDs, pussybow blouses, sharp tailoring and glistening cocktail dresses, it’s no surprise that the UK brand has a following of ardent celebrity fans including Taylor Swift, Kourtney Kardashian and Carrie Underwood, making it the choice for partywear essentials.

From kittens to witches and Cadillac cars, the imagination behind these shoe designers is creatively mind-blowing WRITTEN BY ELLE TIMMS
I
don’t know who invented high heels, but all women owe him a lot,” said Marilyn Monroe – and she sure had a point. The way to any true fashion follower’s heart is through her feet, with shoes holding the power to transform any below-average outfit by, quite literally, elevating the style. So, with shoes having such an impact on fashion, why shouldn’t they have a concise theme of their own? This season, we’ve noticed a pattern emerging when it comes to the more fanciful end of the spectrum of fashionable footwear, and designers are stretching their imaginations like never before…

Fashion’s love of cats is nothing new, the majority of Miu Miu’s S/S10 collection was covered in them, and who hasn’t noticed Chanel’s playful campaign featuring Freja Beha Erichsen’s whiskered visage this season? But our favourite feline friendly designs come courtesy of Charlotte Olympia’s To Die For collection, with references provided in the form of the ‘velvet kitty’, also available in flat and leopard styles. Miaow! Since the launch of her London-based brand in 2007, Charlotte Dellal’s designs have become famous for their classic shapes and meticulous attention to detail. Her amazing creations focus on femininity and vintage glamour. Charlotte says: “I like a nostalgic feel. The accessories of the past had a certain humour to them. They were more a part of the outfit and the look. When you look back to previous decades, like the 1940s and 1950s, they’d wear a fantastic hat, a funny little bag, like the poodle bag for example. It was so accessory-oriented, it was more fun.” Kitty heels Dhs3,155 at Symphony

With a jagged ‘saw’ edge sole as her established signature and an exploration of the witches ‘tail’ last season, Camilla Skovgaard is more than ‘having a moment’ – “I elope on something I picked up on in the season before. I don’t sit with a mood board and say ‘Africa!’ It’s more of a feeling,” describes the Danish designer of the thought process behind her iconic, sharp-collared shapes. Discussing her design edge, Camilla says: “I’m not a colour person. If I could run a business on it, everything would be terribly stark colours and more subversive, but I love seeing the shoes sell and I can find colour attractive on other women.” While Camilla is fast making her label known in the shoe industry, her career in fashion actually started in the UAE when she designed for the region’s Sheikhs’ wives and daughters.” 174

Move over Manolo, Sultan Al Darmaki is set to steal your King of Footwear title. The Emirati designer launched his line, Darmaki, after finding inspiration from meeting his ‘muse’, Princess Fatima Al-Qu’aiti, a graduate and international corporate lawyer at an Abu Dhabi art exhibition two years ago. “Her confidence, ambition, eye for detail, and love for art in its many forms epitomises the woman I want to design for,” he explains. “The twist of exotic roots is perfectly encapsulated by my ‘Arabesque’ designs.” Following the philosophy that a woman’s personality is revealed in her shoes, Sultan is “inspired

The green lighT whether your eye is drawn towards tourmaline, emerald or jade, green is undoubtedly the beauty world’s latest colour crush. as globally renowned make-up guru Pat mcGrath confides: "i actually find that green is the most universally flattering shade to all colours of skin and eyes. it makes the whites of the eyes look whiter and contrasts (or harmonises) with all colours of irises beautifully." and who are we to argue? Light up your eyes with m.a.c’s crayon Kohl (Dhs88) in rosemary&thyme a beautiful golden-flecked green, and follow with a wash of shadow for an unrivalled high-shine finish. Pat also advises “vibrant shadows look great with black,” so add a little extra smoulder by blending m.a.c’s eyeshadow (Dhs84) in carbon matte into the eyelid creases. a trademark beauty secret is to place a lick of gold shadow on the inner most corners of the eye for a little added sparkle. 184

Picture tom Fords' archetypal runway Gucci Girl of the 1990s, all sooty-eyes and flawless skin. no one loves a cat-like eye more than British make-up artist charlotte tilbury, a firm favourite of Kate moss, who recommends for a feline eye to “use a light colour eyeshadow in the inner corner of the eye,” and “always apply mascara by dragging the lashes outwards, rather than up, to exaggerate the shape of the eye.” For a foolproof application, the Dolce&Gabbana Femme Fatale palette (Dhs322) should be shortlisted for a beauty award. with its four contrasting shadows, incased in a ruby inspired compact, it’s a powder room treasure. to give the illusion of pore-perfect skin, a dusting of make up Forever’s hD microfinish Powder (Dhs140) should be your finishing touch as you’re running out the door.

beauty/interview OU’RE INCREDIBLY BUSY WITH WORK AND YOUR TWINS, HOW DO YOU FIND THE TIME TO LOOK SO GLAM? When I’m home with my kids, there’s not a glam moment in sight! I’m lucky enough to have make-up artists and hairstylists who work magic when I need to look my best. WHAT'S YOUR BEST BEAUTY ADVICE? Sleep well, wear sunscreen and laugh and smile as much as possible. WHAT’S INSIDE YOUR COSMETIC BAG? A moisturiser with SPF. Right now I’m in love L’Oréal Paris Total Repair 10. It fights the 10 signs of ageing so it’s my multi-tasking product. I also carry L’Oréal Paris Million lashes Luminizer and my favourite lipstick is L’Oréal Paris Infallible Le Rouge Shade #212 – once you put it on it stays for hours. WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON COSMETIC SURGERY. IS IT SOMETHING YOU’D CONSIDER? I believe in growing old gracefully. I truly believe that a woman’s face, as she ages, tells a story and gives incredible character. Laughter lines, frown lines, the works. Of course, you take measures to prevent these but retain the natural look. I’m not against cosmetic surgery, but I just don’t think it’s necessary. DESCRIBE YOUR BEAUTY REGIME? I love going to the hair salon and having deep-conditioning treatments. Soft, shiny, clean hair is something I love. YOU’RE BLESSED WITH FLAWLESS SKIN, WHAT’S YOUR SECRET? I have to thank my mother for teaching me that I must take care of my skin. Aside from skin care, I try to maintain a healthy sleeping pattern, which is often hard when travelling a lot. I also drink a lot of water. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO EAT HEALTHY WHILE ON TOUR? It’s difficult, but we have some amazing people who make sure we’re eating well so we can perform at our best. HOW DO YOU KEEP IN SHAPE? Having twins to run around after is a wonderful form of exercise but, of course, I also work out. I enjoy running, yoga, and my trainer keeps me challenged so I don’t get bored. As for diet, I don’t cut anything out, I just believe in moderation. WHO DO YOU ADMIRE AS A STYLE ICON AND WHY? My mother, as she taught me so much about glamour and I blame her for my obsession with extremely high heels!
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO GET READY FOR A RED CARPET EVENT? It all depends on my schedule. If I have to travel to the event, if I have rehearsals, or family commitments, it can be anything from one to eight hours. YOU’VE PULLED OFF SOME GREAT STATEMENT GOWNS ON THE RED CARPET, WHAT DESIGNERS DO YOU FOLLOW? Marchesa and Versace always seem to fit me perfectly and make me feel like a glamorous, classy woman. Recently, Zuhair Murad has been catching my attention – his designs are so detailed and feminine. His latest collection is like a fairy tale. DANCING, SINGING AND ACTING – WHICH ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT? I really couldn’t choose one, each one provides me with a different outlet to express myself and I love each for many different reasons. Dancing makes me feel so free, singing is where you express your feelings and acting is how you learn about yourself. HOW DO YOU PREPARE YOURSELF PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY BEFORE GOING ON STAGE? For singing, I have a voice coach who runs me through some warm up exercises but to get in the zone for a performance you really need to feel the atmosphere – once you’re out there it’s incredible. DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN FIVE WORDS? Blessed, compassionate, strong, sensitive and ambitious. FINALLY, WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR AGENDA? If I knew, I would tell you. But for now I’m just focusing on my kids and me. ■

The weigh-in
t was whilst holidaying with friends on the Côte d’Azur in Monaco in 1921 that Gabrielle Chanel first had the idea to create a fragrance as an addition to her growing empire. It was not until her introduction to celebrated nose Ernest Beaux that her idea was brought to life. Beaux created a fragrance described as a floral bouquet and a symbol of all things Chanel – femininity, modernity and simplicity. The activity on Joseph Mul’s farm in the town of Grasse in Provence is based on timehonoured tradition. Monsieur Mul’s great-great grandfather started the longstanding relationship with Chanel. Mlle Chanel was rumoured to be so delighted with the scent of the Mul’s Farm that she contracted them to work only for her. A day on the farm starts early as the picking of the jasmine begins. With such delicate flowers time is of the essence as once picked and weighed the flowers are on their way to the lab where they are bottled into Chanel N° 5. If feminine charm could be bottled then, this would be it. The hearty notes of the perfume are inundated with flowers, ylang ylang, the May rose and jasmine, with both the latter being harvested at Mul Farm in the months of May and September respectively. It is in the laboratory that the magic happens. A series of extraction, distillation and evaporation sees the raw ingredients transformed into liquid form and ready to be bottled and stamped with the signature interlocking C’s.

ON THE SCENT
Sheldrake Christopher Christopher Sheldrake with Elizabeth
he quintessential English gent, Christopher Sheldrake is upholding the tradition and prestige of Chanel’s fragrance house. And as the right hand man to famous nose Jacques Polges, he stands firm in his role as perfumer and director of research and development for Chanel. Working to safeguard the formula of the original Chanel N° 5, he is also an integral part of the evolution of the fashion house’s fragrances. Here he divulges his inner most thoughts about the scent...
character much like Gabrielle Chanel and this is reflected in the fragrance.
WHAT IS YOUR FIRST MEMORY OF SCENT?
It has been around for 90 years and throughout all this time none of the original ingredients have been changed or have gone out of fashion. Chanel's perfumers have to safeguard the fragrance and its formula so it remains in its original state. Right down to picking the raw ingredients from the jasmine fields in Grasse, France, ensures the perfume remains the same.
WHAT DO YOU COUNT AMONG YOUR INSPIRATION?
Perfumers are inspired by many different things; by new places, meeting people or even a raw ingredient. In terms of my own inspiration I get myself in the zone to create by listening to Mozart or even Queen. WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY ON WHY PEOPLE WEAR PERFUME?
We wear perfume to express ourselves and we choose a particular perfume to express how we feel. It gives us an inner confidence and is an extension of us. Often when you like somebody, you like the way they smell. The sense of smell is extraordinary. WHO IS THE CHANEL N° 5 WOMAN?
I envisage her to be very feminine and elegant with lots of taste. Yet, she has a strength of 196

IN YOUR OPINION, WHY IS CHANEL N° 5 SUCH A SUCCESSFUL PERFUME?
WHAT SETS CHANEL N° 5 APART FROM ITS CONTEMPORARIES?
Our tastes have changed over the years. Fashion and perfume I believe are directly related and as fashions change so does fragrance. In the 1980s there was a tendency towards strong perfume, so we created the eau de parfum with the introduction of vanilla and sandalwood. The success of this fragrance is dependent upon it having a recognisable character. HOW HAS THE FRAGRANCE CHANGED WITH THE TIMES?
We created Eau Premiere in 2009. It is our modern version of the original N° 5. This
WHICH ARE YOUR THREE FAVOURITE INGREDIENTS TO CREATE WITH?
Jasmine from Grasse, as it has a sweetness almost akin to strawberries and a green tea note. Sandalwood for its feminine quality, it has a creaminess that lasts a very long time on the skin and amber notes like vanilla and oud that are warm and animalike. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT SCENTS FROM THE MIIDDLE EAST?
I’ve always considered the Middle East to be the birthplace of perfumery – I love oud when it burns it creates a very warm and intense atmosphere. It is very unique. WHAT'S NEXT ON THE AGENDA?
To keep happy. I've always believed if you’re happy in your life it shows. I get most compliments when I’m content.

I have a distinctive memory, and there are certain scents you never forget. I grew up in India and when I think of it, it takes me back to the market place with all the different spices. We used to head to the mountains in summertime and I can still recall the strength of the Eucalyptus.
WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL INTENTION BEHIND THE PERFUME?
is the first time we rewrote the formula completely yet keeping the essential ingredients of the rose, jasmine, ylang ylang and sandalwood in the mix.

HEAD
TURNER Surrounded by an air of mystery, EW decided to meet Romano Ricci, the man behind Maison Juliette Has A Gun WRITTEN BY ELIZABETH WHISTON-DEW
WHAT SPARKED YOUR LOVE OF PERFUME? I grew up surrounded by perfume and fashion with my great grandmother, Nina Ricci. My grandfather, Robert Ricci, was also a famous perfumer, creating the revered L’Air Du Temps – a signature perfume of the fashion house. WHAT IS YOUR ALL TIME FAVOURITE SCENT? My grandfather always wore Signor Ricci. In fact, he didn’t just wear it, it was as if he took a bath in it. His perfume permeated the whole house! It was so elegant and had such an impact on me – I can still smell it now. WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO WORK IN THE PERFUME INDUSTRY? From the ages of 15-20 I was a racing car driver, but the pull of perfume was too strong. My story is unique as it is one based on generations. I had a very special relationship with my grandfather, who was the only son of Nina. He too had one son, my father, and my father had me. WHO IS JULIETTE? It is the Shakespearian
R
omano Ricci cuts a striking figure in his signature fedora, which has become a symbol of his style prowess and a reflection of his upbringing in a world where fashion and perfume rules. The modern day fragrance prince, Romano is the new generation of his family’s dynasty – he is the great grandson to Nina Ricci, founder of the eponymous French fashion house and perfume emporium. From birth, Romano was destined to follow in his relatives’ creative and scented footsteps. However, it wasn’t until he was 20 years old, and after a brief flirtation with car racing, that he decided to set himself apart as sole creator of his own fragrance house, Maison Juliette Has A Gun. Juliette I am referring to in my work. I believe every woman has two very different sides – extreme femininity versus power and strength, and this is reflected in every scent I create. PERFUME IS IMPORTANT TO YOU BECAUSE… I love the way perfume influences us all subconsciously. The sense of smell is the most powerful and yet the least analysed sense. It’s almost impossible to describe a scent with words, but once you’ve been hit by a scent it is almost impossible to forget it. GIVE US AN INSIGHT INTO YOUR BRAND: MAISON JULIETTE HAS A GUN? This is a very seductive set of fragrances. My perfumes are replicas of a woman’s characteristics. I like to create personalities, for example I have Miss Charming, Lady Vengeance and now the Vengeance Extreme. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I am curious about many things. I am a traditional person at heart but feel I have a modern twist, for example, I love classical music like Mozart and Chopin but I also love electronic music. I’m very eclectic!
CAN YOU EXPLAIN YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN THE CREATIVE PROCESS? Perfume is my whole life, with the creation being the most important part. I create perfume in the same way I would a painting. When I start a fragrance it is like I am a composer, I do all the formulas myself so I am at liberty to choose between the heavy woody notes and musks right through to the innocent white florals. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR THE BRAND? We’ve been in the Middle Eastern market for seven years and I’m determined that the brand will remain exclusive. I believe that small is beautiful. ■

BEHIND THE
RED DOOR EW takes a trip back in time to celebrate Elizabeth Arden’s 100-year reign in beauty Written by Cherith niCholl
marilyn monroe, elizabeth taylor and Jackie Kennedy onassis were all dedicated fans of elizabeth arden, with elizabeth taylor becoming one of the first celebrities to launch a fragrance with the brand.
THE rEvIval of a classIc in 1989, one of elizabeth arden’s most successful perfumes was created by carlos benaim; a scent that would become an icon both for its recognisable floral bouquet and bottle that pays homage to the beginning of the brand. this month sees the signature scent getting a bit of a revamp and a re-launch with a bolder bottle to accompany it, giving it a new lease of life for younger generations to discover and continued support from die hard fans. hen Elizabeth Arden opened the iconic red door to her first salon in New York in 1910, she began to take the beauty industry in a direction that was fresh, new and revolutionary. With a passion to create products that had a scientific background and results that could be seen, she had a tough job on her hands in an era that saw women at home and certainly not in a lab. Elizabeth worked tirelessly until she shaped a product that can still be found today in the cosmetic kits of top make-up artists, Hollywood’s elite and beauty buffs across the globe – the Eight Hour Cream. Named after a customer’s comment that the balm healed her son’s scraped knee in just eight hours, this advance in cosmetics kick-started a range of products that were to reach cult status. Soon after, a trip to France opened up another world to Elizabeth – a world of lipstick, rouge and mascara that was introduced into her line, creating best-selling products such as the Smoky Eyes Powder Pencil and a range of lipsticks to create the classic Elizabeth Arden red lip. Elizabeth continued to keep a hands on approach with the brand right up until her death in 1966, where her true age was finally revealed as 88 – her youthful looks were a firm testimony to the brand. Today Elizabeth Arden beauty continues to be a force to be reckoned with as her motto of ‘to be beautiful and natural is the birth right of every woman’ lives on.n

ever far apart, fashion and music’s long-standing partnership has always been admired. Just think of Duran Duran’s supermodel-packed music videos, or more recently Kanye West’s designer debut in Paris. But never like this… Always a step ahead of the pack, quintessentially British ‘it’ brand Burberry has teamed up with The Feeling to release a bespoke single entitled Rosé, in conjunction with the fashion house’s latest fragrance. Creative director Christopher Bailey chose the UK-based band to provide the soundtrack for the Burbery Body scent advertisement, with the tune remaining true to the fashion house’s much-referenced British heritage. “Music is a hugely important facet of the Burberry world,” he explains. “And with the launch of this fragrance we wanted to create an iconic soundtrack that reflects its

sensuality and attitude.” Bailey’s decision to use The Feeling was a simple one. “They are a band I have always admired, they have incredible musical talent, an addictive energy and a unique sound. We worked on an unique, exclusive string recording of Rosé in Abbey Road, the famous studios where The Beatles recorded.” Burberry’s long been a supporter of British music, and its fashion show soundtrack selections always reflect this, most recently with songs from Kill It Kid and Adele. Once again flying the patriotic flag, Burberry selected supermodel-of-themoment Rosie Huntington-Whiteley to front the aptly-named scent and Mario Testino to shoot the campaign. Rosie, whose envy-inducing body was wrapped in the label’s iconic trench coat for the ad, said: “It’s a huge compliment, a real confidence boost and makes me feel special.” And after one sniff of the sleek, sexy scent full of freesia, green absinthe and peach, we agree! ■

The experts found that their Jamaican case studies took a simple approach to running – pounding grass tracks rather than treadmills. well-heeled The festive season generally entails dancing the night away in toe-cripplingly small shoes – as long as they look great, you can ignore the pain. However, osteopaths and chiropractors warn this ‘fashion over common sense’ attitude is actually damaging with cases of lower-back problems soaring. Dr James Boyle, chiropractor at the California Chiropractic & Sports Medicine Center, Dubai (www.cccsm-center. com), said: “Make it a daily habit when you get home in the evening to soak your feet in warm water and give them a massage to ease pressure. If you have a bunion, soak your feet in ice water for 10-minutes to ease the pain. Also try putting a golf or tennis ball under your instep and roll it back and forth for a few minutes – it’s good for releasing tension.” If you insist on wearing heels then vary between the heights, leaving the skyscrapers for special events only. Also, opt for specialised cushioned insoles that help distribute weight evenly on the foot, reducing pressure on the nerves in the lower vertebrae. Dr Boyle says: “There are a variety of cushion pads, insoles and bunion protectors available in pharmacies – invest in a pair or two and protect your feet!”
family battles It’s imperative to keep a sense of humour during the festive period. Tempers are frayed and relationships tested during this tumultuous period when families

reunite, especially if you have in-laws. The best thing to do in this situation is smile and be content in the knowledge that it’ll all be over soon. If you really can’t contain your contempt, then call a friend and have a good old moan – anything to avoid a fight. Carole Spiers, stress management expert and author of Show Stress Who’s Boss! says: “Emotions are high on the surface during festive periods. We end up spending time with people whom we might not normally see and so this is a time for keeping your cool. Not everyone does what we would like them to do and so the festive period is a time to stand back and not get too emotional over small things. It’s amazing how many things get out of hand so easily.”
not detox Come January, everyone will be detoxing, however, the key to surviving the party season is actually pre-toxing – avoiding the hangover altogether. Roohi says: “The pre-tox is not everyone preparing your body, and Does what we woulD possibly your mind, to handle like them to Do anD so the excesses of the season. It the festive perioD is a would be better to maintain a time to stanD baCk anD particularly regular and healthy not get too emotional approach to food, exercise and over small things. it’s rest. Exercise 30 minutes a day, or at least putting in an hour at the gym three times per week. This makes your body better at handling the stresses of the season”.
the festive diva Surviving the festive period is an endurance test, with mounting tensions causing your inner diva to rear its ugly head. However, temper tantrums, huge demands – particularly when it comes to unrealistic present requests and catty behaviour – only lead to embarrassment in the new year, when everything simmers and all that is left is memories of your crude attitude. So, when you feel you’ve reached boiling point, take a step back and breathe, count to 10 and don’t snap. And if someone else is being the diva don’t tell them to calm down, this only antagonises the situation. Carole advises: “Take a step back and accept people for who they are. It doesn’t mean that you may like how they are behaving but do your best not to respond to them in an overly emotional way.”

fatigue More time partying and less time sleeping depletes the body of its essential nutrients making you lethargic and moody, which is why in the run up to the festive season you should start conditioning your body with vital and natural vitamins. Nutritionist Roohi Hamlani (www.fitnessandfood.ae) says: “Artificial boosts are never recommended and are often detrimental. Endless cups of coffee are not good either because they can cause the jitters, high blood pressure, insomnia and a host of other unpleasant ailments, especially for those particularly susceptible to the effects of caffeine.” However, before you throw out your kettle she adds: “For those regularly consuming just two to three cups a day, it can actually have a positive lift with a host of protective benefits too. If coffee isn’t your thing, choose green tea for a pick-me-up – it has the added benefit of being packed with antioxidants.” If you must take supplements, Roohi recommends CoQ10, a nutrient that occurs naturally in the body and plays a vital part in cellular energy production, combating fatigue in a safe way. Roohi insists that keeping hydrated is also important: “Dehydration and fatigue go hand-in-hand. Some studies suggest even mild dehydration can slow down the metabolism and sap energy. Drink plenty of water at regular intervals.”

Start slow, with a small quantity of beet juice to ensure that the detox occurs at a gradual pace. Too fast and you you’ll feel bad.” Also a protein-rich breakfast such as eggs and a strong coffee will help as will L-glutamine, an amino acid powder that can be added to water and help detoxify the body.
The festive period should be fun, not an endurance test. Yet, unfortunately, the season often induces stress and anxiety, testing our immune system and leaving us more susceptible to illnesses. “It’s all about planning ahead, especially the shopping and cooking,” says Carole. “The holiday period can be a time of creativity when you’re not rushing around from place to place and meeting to meeting. It’s only at times of quiet that your brain has a chance to be creative, so go for that long walk but take a thought with you of something that you really want to do.” Roohi also insists that maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help you keep your cool. “There are a host of nutrient-rich foods that can help restore a physical and mental balance,” she says. “Blueberries in your christmas on the plastic particular are high in antioxidants and vitamin C – both proven to The pressure to buy presents, and good presents at that, is play a vital role in relieving stress. SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT: Try Western Tanzania – the Mahale Mountains National Park is one of the least visited, but most beautiful, parks in Africa and has our favourite ‘beach’ hideaway – Greystoke Mahale (www.nomad-tanzania.com). A/W11 MUST-DO'S: Either a SubSaharan safari, as the end of the dry season makes for excellent gameviewing. Or Iceland for its overwhelming raw, natural beauty. For a city stay book in at Hotel 101 (www.101hotel.is) and for the Northern Lights, stay at Hotel Ranga (www.hotelranga.is). HOT NEW PLACE: Lesotho in Southern Africa. The ‘Kingdom in the Sky’ is a great alternative (and empty) ski resort, but also beautiful for hiking in the summer through the Drakensberg Mountains, staying at Maliba Mountain Lodge (maliba-lodge.com).

WRITTEN BY CHARLOTTE COLQUHOUN
Elegant and seductive with a ragged edge, Buenos Aires isn’t perfect – but that’s part of its charm. Its people are beautiful, the buildings vary from downtrodden to slick and its atmosphere is constantly buzzing – at any moment it feels a street party may erupt. Buenos Aires is split into several neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct identity. In downtown Recoleta, head for Plaza Francia with its colonial Iglesia del Pilar and the Recoleta Cemetery. The Patio Bullrich offers a serious serving of retail therapy. Palermo Viejo is a younger, edgier area full of cute bars and restaurants. Enjoy brunch at Oui Oui (www.ouioui.com.ar), sushi at Little Rose (Armenia 1672), sleek Scandi-fare at Olsen (Gorriti 5870) or substantial salads at Mark’s Deli (www.markspalermo.com). The oldest part of town, San Telmo is full of slightly faded but stunning buildings that were abandoned by their wealthy inhabitants during a 19th Century yellow fever epidemic. San Pedro Gonzalez Telmo Church, in particular, has a wonderfully decorative exterior. This is antiques heartland: Sunday sees a fabulous market in Plaza Dorrego. Meanwhile, Puerto Madero is a modern hub, yet home to the historic Monumento Las Nereidas. Adjacent is La Reserva Ecologica, with grasslands, riverbanks and abundant wildlife – it’s a lush escape from the bustling city. Heavy hitting sites include the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires, Casa Rosada (home to the government), and the Cabildo (old colonial city council building). Walk down the Avenida de Mayo to the Plaza Congreso and gaze at even more spectacular, architecture.

All those Argentinean references in Ralph Lauren’s collections could easily have come from Cardon (www.cardon.com.ar). La Martina is synonymous with leather polo goods. Its hold-alls are smart, even if you don’t know a stirrup from a saddle.

wHY Go: Thanks to its status as a thriving cultural hub – the city is home to a major art scene and hosts the renowned International Film Festival – and its portfolio of luxurious hotels, including Trump Towers and Shangri-la, Toronto is firmly on the radar for hipster travellers. wHErE to sHoP: The city offers two types of shopping experiences: luxury and vintage. For high end goods, department store Holt Renfrow is a unique treasure trove in the middle of Bloor Street, aka ‘Mink Mile’. Be sure to look out for some of Canada’s up-and-coming designers such as Pink Tratan, Jeremy Laing and Smyth. For vintage items, Queen Street West is full of great boutiques. wHErE to sLEEP: By far the coolest hotel in town is The Drake (www.thedrakehotel.ca). Its retro interiors make it a huge hit with visiting trendsetters and film execs. Another favourite that sleeps everyone from rap stars to royalty is the quietly grand Windsor Arms (www. windsorarmshotel.com). wHErE to PartY: The latest phenomenon to hit Toronto is the ‘supper club,’ where the hassle of moving from dinner to dancing is eliminated. One of the hottest and
most successful is the Art Deco Roosevelt Room (therooseveltroom.ca) where dining tables transform into party tables at the click of a button. Serious fun-seekers head to Muzik, where revellers can escape the Canadian winter under a vast glass dome and then break out their designer swimsuits at its outdoor summer pool parties. wHErE to Eat: Cananda benefits from excellent local produce, as evidenced in fine dining favourite Scaramouche (scaramoucherestaurant. com) where minimal-yet-hearty choices such as elk wrapped in smoked bacon are served up in sophisticated style. A favourite among brunch fans is the eclectic Saving Grace, its simple but sumptuous cuisine means queues are to be expected. wHat to sEE: Toronto has so much more to offer than its iconic CN tower, city zoo and other well-known sights on the tourist itinerary. For a real slice of history, Casa Loma (www.casaloma. org) in midtown is a Medieval-style castle designed by Sir Henry Pellatt – a well-known Canadian financier and soldier – in 1911. As well as its impressive architecture, its grand gardens are truly something to behold. Meanwhile, film buffs should head to Ontario Place and catch a movie at the world’s first IMAX cinema. Concert halls, art galleries and theatres abound, so there’s no excuse not to imbibe in the Canadian culture.

DEstination wHY Go: Breathtaking beaches, a healthy outdoor lifestyle and an innovative culinary scene are just three of the many reasons why Sydney consistently rates highly as one of the world’s most liveable cities. wHErE to sHoP: Home-grown designers, including top names Sass & Bide and Alice McCall, have seduced even the most critical international fashionistas. The best place to discover designs by emerging talents is at the fashion-forward boutiques along Oxford Street and William Street. For quirky, hippy beach-inspired pieces and vintage finds head to the Bondi Markets on Sundays. For big-name luxury brands, walk to Castlereagh Street, Sydney’s answer to Fifth Avenue. wHErE to sLEEP: While there are plenty of five-star hotels surrounding Sydney’s famous harbour, the privately-rented Darling Point Pad is a must-visit. High above Rushcutters Bay, its private views of Sydney’s harbour and Opera House are unparalleled. A favourite retreat for Sydney’s glam crowd is Jonah’s Whale Beach – a high-end boutique perched atop the cliffs and overlooking the Pacific Ocean. However, don’t be distracted by its laid-back atmosphere, state-of-the-art essentials including LCD TVs, iPod docks and Bulgari products fill each of its 10 rooms (www. jonahs.com.au). wHErE to PartY: Most of Sydney’s clubs are concentrated in Kings Cross. as popular for its themed nights as its mischievouslynamed cocktails. Around the corner, Sapphire Lounge is so hip it hurts with achingly cool bartenders and private booths for skinny models and cashflashing hedge-funders (www. sapphirelounge.com.au). wHErE to Eat: Sydney offers much more than ‘shrimp on the barbie’, Vegemite and outback steakhouses. ‘Mod Oz’ is the catchphrase being used to describe Australia’s contemporary new take on cuisine. Places like est. and Mark Best’s Marque restaurant (www. marquerestaurant.com.au) have helped transform the city’s gastronomic scene. Duke Bistro also serves up great, modern Aussie food in a more laid-back environment (www.dukebistro.com.au). wHat to sEE: The city’s real culture lies in it’s lifestyle, whether it’s swimming or surfing on Bondi Beach, sipping a beer at an outdoor pub or playing an easy game of cricket. However, its artistic flair can be seen in its independent galleries, including Firstdraft (firstdraftgallery.com) and Tap Gallery (www.tapgallery.org.au). A must-visit is the exclusive boutique Casa das Vellas Loreto, this house of candles has been open since the 18th century. wHErE to sLEEP: Boutique hotels, including the Orient Express owned Lapa Palace, are located on the outskirts of Lisbon’s wealthy Lapa neighbourhood. After 10 years of restoration, the Carlton Pestana Palace, formerly the palace of the Marquee de Valle Flor, is easily the most impressive hotel in Lisbon with picturesque botanical gardens (www.pestanapalacelisbon.com). wHErE to PartY: A plethora of formerly illegal drinking dens now form the nucleus of much of the city’s vibrant nightlife. The earliest ruins, underneath the Castelo de Sao Jorge, date back to 138BC and the Roman occupation. wHY Go: Abundance is the best word to sum-up Beirut – there’s always a party, and way too much delicious food to be eaten. Don’t be afraid of the ultra-glam appearance of its locals, they are the most welcoming hosts, greeting visitors with open arms. Just be ready to join the party. wHErE to sHoP: Almost every designer brand can be found in the redeveloped area of Solidere, amongst the pre-war sandstone buildings and wide, cobblestone streets. Aishti is Beirut’s equivalent to Harvey Nichols, where you’re sure to find blinged-out females splashing out on the latest designer duds. For traditional Arab and Lebanese handmade clothing, try Assyla in downtown. Saifi Village also houses some amazing up-and-coming Lebanese designers. wHErE to sLEEP: By far the most charming hotel in Beirut is the Albergo Hotel (www.albergobeirut.com). Located in the posh area of Achrafieh, Albergo’s décor is ornate with tapestries, Persian carpets and Damascene wood ceilings. For a more modern vibe, the recently opened Le Grey has been widely applauded for its chic stylings. wHErE to PartY: Beirut is the party capital of the Middle East. In summer the action takes place closer to the beach in outdoor clubs like Sky Bar (www.sky-bar.com) and White (whitebeirut.com). Evenings usually start at one of the bars in Gemmayze, where restaurateur Mouraz Mazouz recently opened Momo. bunker-turned-nightclub BO 18 (www. b018.com) is also one not to be missed, especially if you’re a fan of tribal house and techno. wHErE to Eat: Eating is a passion for the Lebanese. The famous Abdel Wahab is always a favourite for local dishes. For those looking for a midnight snack, Al Falamanki does food and shisha 24 hours a day. There are also numerous roadside bakeries serving traditional Lebanese takeaway fodder. Surprisingly, Japanese cuisine is extremely popular, with the fashionable Le Sushi Bar perpetually filled with the city’s most fabulous people (www. lesushibar.com). wHat to sEE: With its multi-lingual population, numerous mosques and churches, Beirut lives and breathes cosmopolitan culture. The famous Pigeon Rock is a must-visit during a leisurely stroll along the corniche. The city’s Roman ruins stand in startling contrast to its glistening new buildings. wHY Go: As China’s ancient capital enters the second decade of the new millennium, it’s clear the city is a global leader in modernisation. Any resident can tell you that the city’s famous skyline changes almost weekly – skyscrapers appear as if out of thin air, neighbourhoods disappear, and trends come and go in an instant. wHErE to sHoP: No trip to Beijing is complete without trying your hand at haggling like a local at one of its many markets. For authentic goods, visit Gaobeidian Furniture City where you can pick up a Mandarin duck quilt – found in almost every home in China. For new and exciting fashions, head to the Gulou and Dashanzi 798 districts. wHErE to sLEEP: For a touch of old Beijing, there are a number of delightful courtyard hotels to choose from. 3+1 Bedrooms (3plus1bedrooms. com) is a hidden gem as is The China Club (www.thechinaclubbeijing.com), owned and designed by Sir David Tang of Shanghai Tang.

While Cape Town has become a magnet for celebrities, the city still maintains its unpretentious atmosphere. wHErE to sHoP: Cape Town has produced some incredibly talented designers, artisans and craftsmen. The centre of this creativity sits in the City Centre and De Waterkant. Here, Pan African Market is an ideal place to pick up traditional crafts. Serious shoppers should contact Sandra Fairfax at Blue Bayou (www.bluebuyou.co. za), who will put together a personalised shopping tour. wHErE to sLEEP: Without a doubt the most incredible views of Table Mountain and the V&A waterfront and marina, Cape Grace (www.capegrace.com) is the most stunning of settings for your South African stay. WHAT MAKES YOUR DESIGNS SO UNIQUE? It’s based on personal passion and not a trend. I want to touch people on a sub-conscious level, making them feel better when they see what I’ve made in their home. WHAT ARE THE CLASSIC PIECES IN INTERIOR DESIGN? Dimmer switches. I’m so shocked at how badlylit some houses are, lighting is very important. I also don’t like the current trend of photographs being blown up on big canvases! YOUR BEST EVER INTERIORS PURCHASE? A lovely French antique mirror. I’ve had it for 16 years, it’s come with me to all my houses and always fits. ... AND YOUR WORST? I bought some black furniture for my bedroom. It had to be shipped from New York and when it arrived I couldn’t get the sofa in my bedroom. It was lacquered and fragile, so damaged easily. It also liked to collect dust! LUXURY IS... Warmth, scented candles, fresh flowers, lighting and a sub-zero fridge filled with bubbly! WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT DESIGN IN THE MIDDLE EAST? I love the historic arches and domes with mosaic tiles – the strong colours complement the dry climate.

This Seventh Avenue stalwart, the daughter of a tailor and a showroom model, had fashion in her blood. Inter-changable, well sculpted yet easy-towear pieces were her USP. Her design empire, which initially started as a clothing concern in 1984, now stretches far beyond its initial cashmere-heavy and iconic bodysuit-bound borders and encompasses all aspects of living; from perfumes to cushions, makeup to menswear, children’s wear to sunglasses. Her fans can ‘Donnafy’ every facet of their lives. In 2001, she sold her publicly traded company to LVMH, for US$643 million. Also in 2001, Donna took on the home with the launch of the Donna Karan Home Collection; and her personal taste is reflected in every piece that formulates the collection. Luxe fabrics abound with leather, cashmere and silks vying for centre stage with candles and bedding in always soothing, cool beiges, creams and whites. Natural woods, matte surfaces and textured stone form the basis of the colour palette. Niche workshops, gifted artisans and age-old techniques are highly regarded, where Donna says: “Every item is about artistry and function, modernity and soul.” Donna’s real estate portfolio is Über-impressive. Along with a 7,000sq-ft Central Park West pad, and a swathe of land in the Turks and Caicos alongside her already impressive home there, she’s also buying up some of East Hamptons’ premier property – on Hedges Banks Drive to be specific; her four

lifestyle/interiors adjacent beachfront homes with views of the serene Gardiner Bay, add up to US$20 million. There is a harmonious contradiction to Donna’s work that is often reflected in her homes. Her interiors are organic yet glamorous. Luxurious but far from slick. She has always been closely associated with New York; the pulse of the city is the inspiration behind her diffusion labels. Yet she is a globally astute, internationally-savvy businesswoman and there is a restrained nomadic element to her interiors. Whilst speaking about her home in Parrot Key, Turks and Caicos, she said: “Three hours from New York, I have this amazing cocoon of serenity that reminds me of the two places here I feel happiest: Africa and Bali.” Chic metropolitan hues combine with natural, achingto-be-touched shapes in obviously-expensive and luxurious finishes. Her properties reflect her professional interior choices; they could be adverts for her home collections. The deeply spiritual, un-showy Karan set out to make her homes stylish sanctuaries; and seeing the natural light spill in through the wide windows in her East Hamptons home, there is no question that she has utterly succeeded. Her interiors are master classes in creating restrained, tranquil, relaxation zones.

Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Falah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club in Abu Dhabi rolled out the pink carpet in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness. The event was supported by Emirates Woman, and as both the ADCB and Estée Lauder polo teams saddled up, EW was fieldside searching for the best-dressed nominees. After being entertained by skydivers, falconers and musicians, guests were treated to a delicious helping of high tea while the game got underway. One of the day’s highlights saw hordes of pinkclad guests take to the field to fix the grass divots during the break from each of the chukkas. The ADCB team was victorious on this occasion, beating their opponents 5-3. As for the best dressed woman, judged by Nour Sabbah, Lisa Sterannesten and EW’s Elizabeth Whiston-Dew, Natalie Mason took the top spot while El Reem Mohammed and Charlotte Rydstrom took second and third place respectively. n

CANCER (JuN 22 – July 23) Expect some drama in your love life this week, especially if either one of you has to meet or face an ex-partner over the festive period. Try not to let your anxiety cause sleepless nights, instead think of it as dealing with a situation, once and for all. A close friend is offering all the emotional support you need. This month’s memo: Empower your love relationship by facing the past.
Horoscopes your forecAst for the MoNth of DeceMber
Sagitarius
(nov 22 – dec 21 )
It seems as if you'll have to fight for your piece of the action this month. This is especially true in a work situation where the competition is fierce. Although you ought to have concerns about the financial implications, try not to obsess about this at the end of the month. Life becomes much more manageable once Mercury comes into your sign on the 14th and even better when Jupiter does the same on the 26th. This month’s memo: You're entitled to defend your territory. Birthday wish: Equilibrium in a relationship.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – JAN 20) In one way or another, you’re being reminded of the past this month. It may not be a bad idea to revisit something in particular, even if just as a reminder of how much you’ve moved on. Once a family dynamic is sorted out you’ll be more relaxed and sleep more soundly. This month’s memo: Draw a line between the present and the past. AQUARIUS (JAN 21 – feb 19) Something is bothering you, but you just can’t put your finger on it. Somehow or other, it’ll work its way to the surface between the 1st and the 29th. In the meantime, you need to deal firmly with a friend who’s being too aggressive for your liking. Love looks fabulous from the 20th. This month’s memo: Invest in a new outfit that makes you feel sexy. 256

DeceMber 2011
PISCES (feb 20 – MAr 20) Your partner’s sharp words are probably not going to fall on deaf ears this month. However, it’d be good if you can show some resilience. A close friend can teach you a thing or two about being thickskinned. A weekend or longer away from your usual surroundings will feel like an overseas holiday. This month’s memo: Give yourself greater financial freedom.
TAURUS (Apr 21 – MAy 21) It’s understandable that you’ll get annoyed if people around you are continually bickering. As much as you’d like to step in and sort things out, it’s best left alone, especially when it involves in-laws. Sit back and wait for your turn when Jupiter moves into your sign on the 26th. This month’s memo: Let other people fight their own battles.
ARIES (MAr 21 – Apr 20) The atmosphere at work is tense this month. Perhaps this is driven by a certain expectation of results, so it’s little wonder that you’re being pushier than usual to attain the pole position. Have patience with travel plans that might go awry during the first half of the month. This month’s memo: Go for what you want wholeheartedly.
GEmINI (MAy 22 – JuN 21) Domestic tension dominates your life during the early stages of this month. Instead of agreeing for the sake of peace, stand up for what you believe in, even if you have to argue your point. Anticipate and expect some misunderstandings up until the 14th. This month’s memo: Stand your ground for what you believe in.
LEO (July 24 – Aug23) If you have concerns over your health, this would be the time to make some fundamental changes that could lead to a better and quality of life. Seek expert advice if you don’t know how, but chances are that you just need motivation. As a result, you’ll feel more energetic and will grab new opportunities that arise at work. This month’s memo: Your health is in your own hands. VIRGO (Aug 24 – sept 23) This is a passionate month for you, especially since you very seldom get carried away or lose your self-control. This is probably due to the strong feelings you have for someone special and this is enabling you to show your true feelings. A mutual understanding is forthcoming when your planet, Mercury, moves forward on the 14th. This month’s memo: Passion can change one’s perception of life. LIbRA (sept 24 – oct 23) You’re facing a bit of an uphill battle at home this month. Instead of having harmony and agreement, it seems some family members have their own agendas. Remember, you can’t please everybody. Your partner is supportive of your point of view and gives you the freedom to do what you feel is best. This month’s memo: It’s time to trust your own judgement. SCORPIO (oct 23 – Nov21) As early as the 1st, you realise that the usual strategy of dealing with family squabbles is not going to work. Instead of finding solutions, step back and see if the situation can right itself without your intervention. This month’s memo: Treat the family as a self-regulatory system. n
