No other watch is engineered quite like a Rolex. The GMT-Master, introduced in 1955, was developed in collaboration with Pan Am to meet the needs of their international pilots. The GMT-Master II has proved to be even more invaluable as it features a rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel that allows those who travel the world to read three different time zones. Two simultaneously. The 40 mm GMT-Master II is fitted with a virtually scratch-resistant black Cerachrom disc and is presented here in 18 ct yellow gold.

n a recent trip to Paris with Hermès, I met women of all ages from all across the Middle East who had one thing in common – they all work. Some were single, some had children and one was pregnant, but with this common thread between us, there was never a moment were the conversation didn’t revolve around our daily deadlines; either in the office, the family home or in our sporadic social lives. It reinforced to me that single or married (and age aside) juggling a career and day-to-day life in general (wherever you are in the world) is a job in itself. So, how do some women succeed in having it all and making it look so easy? Turn to page 98 as we delve into the lives of Dubai’s doyennes of society who do it all – the family, career and sparkling social lives – in incredible style. On the other side of the world, our cover star, Cindy Crawford, is another working mother – albeit one who reached iconic status with her first sashay down the runway – who opens up about how her life has changed with age (and how her looks haven’t). Read on for first-class facts, fashionable finds and beauty secrets from the UAE and around the globe that will not only take the years off, but transform your life – whatever your age.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago and undergoing extensive chemotherapy, my self-esteem plummeted – as did my cup size. After reading your brilliant advertorial on Agent Provocateur, Size Matters, I was encouraged to go out and be properly measured. To my horror, I have been wearing a whole bra size too big, which cannot have been good for me. I decided to splurge on two beautiful sets of lingerie in Agent Provocateur and for the first time in a long time I feel sexy and secure. Thanks EW. Bridgette Otto, Dubai APRIL 2011

CATE THE GREAT
I really enjoyed your Cate Blanchett feature, All About Cate. I find her to be truly talented and elegant – the perfect EW cover choice. It was refreshing to read about an actress who often shuns the spotlight and enjoys theatre work as much as high profile movie roles. Cate’s grace is reminiscent of the stars of old Hollywood. Lisel Kawoki, Sharjah
I absolutely adored reading your Luxury Is feature last month. What a guilty pleasure to be given the chance to peak inside the lives of Dubai’s most glamorous personalities. I think you nailed the ultimate luxuries in life: travel, hosting family/friends, peace of mind, designer shoes and time with loved ones, what more could one want? It’s important to include UAE-based women in your magazine as it showcases our local talent in business, fashion and everything in between. Keep it up, EW! I thought I was well educated in the danger of sun damage, but your extensive information was shocking and productive. Who knew UV rays can shine through fabrics? TIPS FOR THE TREND ● Forget rules and rhymes – it’s OK
to clash. Repeat after us: pink and red, blue and green – these are the colours that should be seen ● A more tame way to dip your toe into colour blocking is with a pair of bright, well-fitting trousers. Try red or cobalt blue with crisp white tops for a less obvious look ● Steer clear of mixing too EMMA many acid tones, and if you’re STONE RADIANT going to include yellow – as ON THE BAFTA RED-CARPET most of the runways did – keep WEARING it daffodil or canary hued LANVIN MAY 2011

Elle seamlessly steals the lime light in a strapless, corseted black gown at the launch of IWC’s Portofino watch range in Geneva. Minimal accessories and a golden glow, bring a radiant touch to her statement gown.
ELLE MACPHERSON’S STYLE EVOLUTION FROM THIS... 2002
From tiered trousers, a blue stoned belt and gold sandals, Elle breaks almost every fashion rule going with a result that is more bag lady than ’it’ lady.

Elle’s makes a certain style statement in this citrus green Calvin Klein gown. Not many could get away with such a colour and length but Elle does it effortlessly and with her super model looks, makes an entrance to remember.

lle Macpherson first shot into the fashion limelight at the tender age of 18 during a year-long break in America. Her natural beauty and athletic figure, which earned her the nickname ‘The Body’, made her first choice for editorial campaigns, with the world’s most noted photographers clamouring to shoot this new Amazonian goddess. Even with such a sudden introduction into the fashion industry, she found herself catapulted into, and courted by, the world of couture and has taken to the catwalk for the likes of Azzedine Alaïa and John Galliano during her career. As the former face of Revlon and spokesmodel for Boots and Invisible Zinc, it was a seamless progression that saw
Elle eventually sign up to host (and executive produce) the popular reality modelling show Britain’s Next Top Model in 2010. As the perfect clothes horse, Elle favours a subtle yet flirtatious look, opting for demure outfits that skim her enviable frame, while maintaining a degree of modesty. Her red carpet appearances are approached with a nod to more mature and refined ensembles. Proving that brains and beauty do go together, the model-turned-entrepreneur’s Elle Macpherson Intimates lingerie range and The Body Skincare line are both hugely successful, making her a powerhouse off the runway, too. From catwalk to school run, this mum of two certainly does fabulous and 40 with aplomb.
TO THIS... 2010
Proof that looking fabulous in your 40s doesn’t have to mean frumpy, Elle pulls off Karl Lagerfeld sprayon effect PVC trousers with ease. A loose and simple T-shirt tones down what could be a fashion faux pas.

I possibly could. I wanted to know everything. I started in the family workshop, and then, after finishing my schooling, I decided to go to Italy to study jewellery design, which was a dream come true. I then graduated as a Gemological Institute of America (GIA) gemologist. AND SO TO YOUR NEW COLLECTION – WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

It’s made up of elements of strong Arabic symbols and is called Eyes Of Babylon. It’s made in Italy, in my small workshop there. The designs give me a sense of personal satisfaction, as it reinforces my culture and heritage. DO YOU HAVE A JEWELLERY ICON?
The late Elizabeth Taylor.

A
n expert in the creation of modern masterpieces, 30-year-old Iraq-born Farah Barakat began her own line of jewellery five years ago, taking her inspiration from a childhood submerged in the designs of sapphires and diamonds. But she wants things done a little differently. HAS BEING A JEWELLERY DESIGNER ALWAYS BEEN YOUR DREAM?
Yes, very much so – since childhood I always imagined ending up in this field. I was raised and surrounded by goldsmiths and jewellers; I’m fifth generation, in fact. However, all the success stories in this field within my family were men, it just seemed
dominated by males, and this gave me a stronger drive to succeed.
With Eyes Of Babylon, I imagine a modern woman who likes to play with her jewellery; dressing it up in different ways. The pieces are colourful, modern and daring, and can be dressed depending on mood. IN TERMS OF LUXURY JEWELLERY, WHAT ONE ITEM SHOULD A WOMAN OWN?
IMPRESSIVE DETERMINATION! HOW DID YOU MAKE IT HAPPEN?
I would say the foundations of a great collection are: simple diamond studs, a beautiful pearl necklace, a diamond studded tennis bracelet, and then build on that with different designs and colour.
I remember going to work every day during my summer vacations, just to learn and absorb as much as

irl-about-town Carla Atallah has been in the business of jewels for 12 years, creating dazzling design statements for the social set. First retailing in the Pink Powder boutique in Beirut, the 37-year-old’s work now glitters proudly in the UAE, stocked at Galeries Lafayette, as well as her own store in Dubai’s Gold and Diamond Park.
IS JEWELLERY DESIGN YOUR DREAM JOB?
Yes, absolutely, decoration in all its forms has always been something I’ve been interested in. HOW DID YOU QUALIFY TO SPECIALISE IN THIS FIELD?
I went to California GIA and graduated from there, with my qualification in jewellery design and gemology. FROM COLLECTION TO COLLECTION, WHAT ARE THE RECENT UPDATES?
I like to think that all of my designs have a touch of glamour – a fusion of classic and current. My recent Sing Me A Song collection is what I consider to be more statement jewellery.
H
ALLA CARLA AT
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Everyday life and fashion inspire me, but sometimes it can be a little more obscure. For example, my Pink Carpet collection is very much influenced by the Victorian era. WHOSE JEWELLERY DRESSING YOU DO MOST ADMIRE?
Queen Elizabeth, of course!
HOW SHOULD ONE WEAR YOUR DESIGNS?
Carla Line should be worn very simply. Although I do cater for all different kinds of women, each of them has their own particular style and my pieces work best when worn as statements of their own. Simple and elegant is the jewellery mantra I swear by.
AND YOUR FASHION STYLE ICON?
I would say Victoria Beckham.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF PERSONAL JEWELLERY?
A pair of simple, diamond studs in the shape of a flower. WHICH PIECE OF JEWELLERY SHOULD EVERY WOMAN OWN?
A diamond pendant. WHAT’S NEXT FOR CARLA LINE?
I feel like the next natural step for me is to franchise the name and take it abroad. Watch this space!

Of course my house in Dubai, although one of my favourite places in the world is our beach house in Hacienda on the northern Mediterranean coast of Egypt. WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORK?
Everything! I’m always on the lookout for new ideas and things to inspire my designs. I’ve always loved jewellery and I notice it everywhere I go. I like to see what people wear every day and what they save for occasions.

ubai-based Ghada Sultan’s colourful creations reflect a designer with a real understanding of what women want. Of Egyptian heritage, a distinct Arabic influence is apparent across the three-year-old line of sparkling bangles and symbolic trinkets, boasting only the most precious stones. It’s a design style she describes as “classical, with a funky touch” explaining, “I think I have a little bit of an eccentric flair!”
YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE AS “CLASSICAL” DO YOU EVER FOLLOW STYLE RULES?
If you love something, wear it. I believe people have different tastes and people should stick to what they love, not what other people love. To have confidence is belief in oneself. AND WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
Jennifer Lopez. DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULARLY TREASURED PIECE OF JEWELLERY?
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR BUSINESS APPROACH?
THAT'S A LOT OF TRAVELLING, IS THAT SOMETHING YOU ENJOY?
I split my time between sourcing precious stones from all over the world, and in the workshops making sure that my designs are accurately realised. The best part about my job is when I go to the workshop and I see the final result.
Yes! I love to travel to Paris in particular, from where I’ve just returned actually. I was exhibiting my collection there, with S*uce. I’m happiest when I’m sat with a coffee in a really lovely outdoor café – anywhere in the world – but Paris is obviously perfect for this!

rom a grungy, long-haired student to the buff, tanned and tattooed star designer we see today, Marc Jacobs’ physical appearance may have changed, but his ability to predict exactly what women want to wear – whether that be his girly ‘mouse’ pumps, stripy knits or retro-style shift dresses – remains intact. Born in New York’s Upper West Side, the designer was raised by his fashion-conscious grandmother. As a teenager he immersed himself in the city’s club culture, observing society’s most eclectic dressers at Studio 54, the Mudd Club and Hurrah. After high school, Jacobs completed a fashion degree at Parsons School of Design; his graduation collection in 1984, which featured brightly-coloured knits, caught the eye of Robert Duffy, an executive who remains President of Marc Jacobs to this day. Together they launched the first Marc Jacobs collection in 1986, winning a Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) award the following year. By 1997, Jacobs’ star was in the ascendant once again, as he was appointed artistic director at Louis Vuitton. He has since transformed the luggage company’s image – not least through his collaborations with artists Takashi Murakami and Stephen Sprouse on seasonal handbag designs – and re-positioned it as a ready-to-wear fashion brand. Launched in 2001, Marc Jacobs’ popular secondary line – Marc by Marc Jacobs – is a creative playground compared to his intensely focused, heavily scrutinised main collection.
1987: Marc is awarded his first CFDA – the youngest designer ever to receive the Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent. He has since gone on to win seven awards, including Womenswear Designer of the Year, Accessories Designer of the Year, Menswear Designer of the Year and this year’s coveted Lifetime Achievement Award.

first really considered age-appropriate dressing when a friend asked my husband if I was happy in our marriage. “Your wife seems to be wearing an awful lot of leopard print, he said. ‘Is everything all right? Since you ask, everything is just fine, thank you very much. I just happen to have developed a penchant for leopard print. Or is it something more sinister? Am I going through some kind of crisis that donning leopard print soothes in some subliminal manner? It’s possible, I suppose. I do feel like purring when I slip on my leopard-print stilettos. If it feels good, what’s the problem? Well, the problem is, the older you get the more care you need to take. Because it becomes more and more difficult to dress in a young way, without looking like mutton dressed as lamb, or even a ‘cougar’ – both expressions women aged 40 and over would rather die than hear used to describe them. And there is nothing that screams ‘cougar’ quite as loudly as animal print. I have a friend who is in her early 80s. If there was any risk at all that she would read this, I would never publish her true age, because she would certainly make sure she murdered me before she hits 90, but as Emirates Woman is not readily available in Rome, I think I am safe. For as long as I can remember, this friend has dressed at least 20 years below her actual age. In fact, she now dresses around 50 years below her age. The last time I saw her she was teetering towards me across Piazza di Spagna wearing leather trousers, high leather boots and a big black Armani jumper and leather jacket. This would normally be a totally and utterly ridiculous look for an 80-year-old, and I have to say she did look slightly loopy, but the other effect (once you got over the loopiness) was that it made her look 60, or even 50, from a distance.
In Italian there are two truths; la verita and la verita vera. The truth and the real truth. The implication being that if you use the former, you are not really being untruthful, because it is only half a truth anyway. My friend obviously lives by that adage, because any 80-year-old in leather trousers (unless they belong to the vintage Harley-Davidson motorcycle club) is telling a whopping lie about how old they are simply by being seen in public. I am not about to wear leather trousers (I’m not that old) but even if it is damaging my reputation, I will stick with the animal print. There is no denying that leopard print
is anti-ageing, I guess mainly because it is all about sex appeal. Is that why we women of a certain age love it? Because being sexy means being young? Possibly. At least we have that option, and it still doesn’t look too ridiculous – assuming we use it sparingly, that is. How times have changed. When we dress nowadays we no longer ask ‘does my bum look big in this?’ we ask ‘does my bum look old in this?’ And if the answer is yes, we can always change into some leopard print. Or at least I do. ■Helena Frith-Powell is the Editor of the National’s M magazine MAY 2011

talian-born illustrator René Gruau worked on the front line of high fashion for more than 60 years; his beautiful sketches are a reminder of what the brush, pen and ink achieved before the camera took over. Capturing the luxury garb of the day in all its provocative glory for the likes of Balmain, Givenchy, Schiaparelli, Jacques Fath and Edward Molyneux, René stimulated an awareness of French fashion for a generation of glamourstarved, post-war women. It was his creative collaboration with Christian Dior, however, that stamped his reputation. Beginning with Dior’s New Look in 1947, René’s connection with the couture house continued well after Dior’s death in 1957, he continued to produce illustrations up until the late 1990s. Classic, elegant and with a touch of drama, Orlando Pita’s hair for the Dior Haute Couture S/S11 show replicated the iconic victory roll style depicted in many of René’s illustrations. Conceptual hairstylist Guido Palau modernised the look for Louis Vuitton, inviting the audience to enter a world of afterhours opulence to reflect the moneyed Far Eastern looks presented by designer Marc Jacobs. “This season was all about a strong woman and a rich, romantic glamour, but also a little decadence, too,” reveals Guido. “Shine for S/S11 is bold and almost wet-looking, like it’s painted on. This lacquered effect gives it impact on the runway, but can also work for everyday living.” For those who want to highlight their features (and channel fashion’s new jeunesse dorée), a sleek close-to-the-head look is the perfect choice, as seen on the catwalks at Nina Ricci, Prada, Versace and Louis Vuitton (pictured).

rankly, it’s a relief to watch Cindy Crawford cleaning dog drool off the couch. Otherwise, you might get the idea that things are a little too sunny in her corner of Malibu. Although she’s not modeling much these days, 45-year-old Cindy still has magazinecover looks and a near-perfect physique. And though she keeps busy with two young kids, from her marriage to nightlife honcho Rande Gerber, she manages to oversee a small empire of businesses, with signature skincare lines available on TV shopping channels and at Sephora, plus a vast collection of home furnishings for JCPenney. In short, you need a slobbering pup like Widget, Cindy’s cute Maltese Yorkie, to inject some reality into the picture. But as she wipes the cushion clean and sits down to chat, that intimidating first impression quickly gives way to the real Cindy – a woman who’s beautiful yet accessible, sincere but the first to poke fun at her famous self. “On Twitter the other day I accidentally

spelled Chile, the country, with an ‘i’ at the end, like the food,” she laughs. Cindy is comfortably chic in a turquoise V-neck T-shirt, stylishly ripped white jeans, and gold strappy sandals. “I went right back on and wrote, ‘Oops. Sorry. I was having a model moment!’ The good thing about people underestimating models is that the bar is set so low you tend to impress them more easily.” Not that Cindy ever fitted into the usual ‘airhead-model’ stereotype. Back in her hometown of DeKalb, Illinois, she was high school valedictorian and later studied chemical engineering on an academic scholarship at Northwestern University for part of a year before turning to fashion full-time in 1984. Her look – with that now-iconic mole – quickly became famous. While other models were enjoying the club scene, Cindy was producing fitness videos, securing corporate endorsements, and building a brand as host of MTV’s House of Style from 1989 to 1995. Today she’s at ease and articulate whether discussing Haiti relief efforts (she participated in her friend

George Clooney’s telethon, Hope for Haiti Now), the latest Malcolm Gladwell book, or her secrets for the best ways to stay fit. The real secret, though, may be that Cindy has reached a level of acceptance with herself that has less to do with her looks and everything to do with how she feels inside. As she puts it: “I think I’m holding up pretty well, but what I like most is the sense of power I have. So much of your life you spend trying to prove yourself, trying to make things happen, trying to get somewhere else. But then you get into your late 30s and 40s and realise life is pretty amazing right in front of you if you can just be present in it.” Previous generations had their Twiggys and Lauren Huttons, but Cindy was among the first to turn a pretty face on a magazine cover into a household name and, ultimately, a one-woman empire. By the early 1990s she helped make supermodels every bit as famous as A-list movie stars, and her fame went supernova when she married actor Richard Gere in 1991. Three years after she and Richard divorced, in 1995, Cindy married Rande Gerber and the couple now have two children: son Presley, 12, and daughter Kaia, nine. “I felt a real change after I had kids,” Cindy says, flipping through a scrapbook she grabs from her comfortable open kitchen. There’s Kaia and Presley with huge grins at the family’s getaway house in Canada. There’s Rande presiding at a barbecue alongside Cindy’s ‘still-youthful-looking’ mom, Jenny (“Half the secret to looking good is having great genes,” Cindy says with a laugh). Cindy delivered both her children at home with a midwife and without
drugs, and says those experiences gave her a sense of “owning my own body”. She adds: “More than anything in my life, it showed me how strong I am. And you need that strength when the kids aren’t babies anymore. Some days I’ll say to them, ‘Get dressed! Brush your teeth!’ 15 times and they’re still not listening.” Over in Kaia and Presley’s playroom, the shelves are piled with board games, there’s a rack of mini wooden mountain bikes the kids can probably ride indoors (there’s lots of space), and each kid has an Apple iPad. Mom has it good, too. Cindy begins most mornings in the Jacuzzi with a cup of green tea before the kids are up (“I need that half hour to collect myself before the craziness starts,” she says). There’s a pool and a gym at the California cliffside property, as well as a secluded beach below. “I like living here. It’s beautiful and it’s fun,” she says. “But we also have a house in Illinois on a cul-de-sac in a tiny subdivision near my mother’s place. My kids ride their bikes down the street to my mom’s. I'll often say to Rande, ‘I could live there. I don’t need all this.’ He’ll roll his eyes, but it’s true.” Cindy met Rande, best known as the brains behind the Whiskey Bar chain of high-end lounges in the US, at one of his New York watering holes. They struck up a friendship and decided to attend Cindy’s agent’s upcoming wedding together. “It was the first relationship where I was friends first and then [around the time her divorce from Gere became final] it turned romantic. I recommend that,” she says. “The other stuff goes up and down, but if you actually

like the person it will hold you together.” She says their marriage takes as much work as any other successful venture. “When something’s wrong I’m all about talking things out. Rande’s philosophy is, if everything’s good, why talk about it, and if it’s bad, why talk about it? He sometimes says, ‘Relationships aren’t supposed to be this hard.’ And I’ll say, ‘Who says?’ It’s so easy to want things to be happy all the time, but happiness shouldn’t be the goal. It’s okay not to feel happy all the time.” What keeps them on track, Cindy says, is their commitment to the relationship itself. That means having once-a-week date nights, particularly now that carpools, soccer practice, and helping the kids with homework demands so much time and attention. At the height of her supermodel years, Cindy could work out two hours a day, six days a week. “I put pressure on myself because I have that mid-western work ethic, but it never felt unhealthy,” she says. Now time with family and her hands-on business style (Cindy selects every face cream, bed sheet, and sofa for her various product lines) keep her on a three-days-a-week gym schedule. She works with a trainer for one-hour sessions, starting with stretches, then 30 minutes of cardio (usually on the treadmill), followed by a 30-minute strength and endurance circuit training (squats, steps, and lunges). “I don’t expect to look the way that I used to,” says Cindy, who also goes on once-a-week hikes with her girlfriends, “because at best that would be deeply frustrating. I work out to feel good and get energised.” Of course, it helps to be strong when the paparazzi aim their zoom lenses your way. Unretouched, candid snaps of her splashing around in a bikini, stretch marks and all, surfaced in the tabloids a few years ago, but that hasn’t stopped her from hitting the beach. “If I put on a few pounds, it goes straight to my butt,” says Cindy. “I risk a picture in the National Enquirer with the headline, ‘Cindy Does Cellulite!’ but,” she shrugs, “I do have cellulite.” To stay slim, Cindy eats a mostly Mediterranean diet, typically filled with wholegrains, fruits and vegetables, some fish and meat. She

also allows for guilty pleasures, like dark chocolate and pizza. “If the kids want to go for ice cream, I’ll get ice cream too. I don’t want my daughter to think that being a beautiful woman is about depriving yourself. She sees me exercising. She sees me eating right. I want to be a good example for her.” Clearly, something’s working. Even in the Malibu sunlight, Cindy could easily pass for 35. Her daily regimen of sunscreen, moisturiser, and anti-ageing night cream helps. And she’s not above an occasional visit to the dermatologist for Botox injections. “When I was 30 I might have said, ‘I’m just going to age in a way that honours time and is completely natural,’ but I’m no longer so highbrow about it,” she says. “I’ve tried Botox, but it scares me. Plastic surgery is really scary, but as long as you don’t use these things to change your face, I think it’s okay.” The morning is wrapping up, and Cindy has a long to-do list. She’s approving packaging for her Sephora line, going over fall products for her JCPenney collection, and she has a beach date with the kids after school. And now Widget, the drooling lapdog, has come snuffling for her attention. Asked to sum up the key to her success, she says: “Luck has been the biggest factor. I’ve tried and failed a lot. But I’ve also been really clear about my brand. It is who I am. I’m a mom. I’m a wife. I’m 45 years old and from the mid-west. I have access to the worlds of fashion and beauty and I can translate that into what women can use in their everyday lives. I’m sexy, but not intimidating. I’m not the kind of woman who’s going to steal your husband.” Glancing over at a Herb Ritts photograph, taken some time during the 1990s, of herself arching her back on an exotic-looking beach, Cindy says: “I don’t long to be anywhere other than where I am now. I think that’s what happens as you get older. Life is where you are. Whatever you’re doing is enough. You don’t need to do everything well all the time. Just be your best self. When you start living that way, it’s a huge relief.”

I am, however, emotionally attached to all the pieces in my wardrobe. I can tell you where, when and why I bought each item. I am very organised, but how I get dressed varies depending on how much notice I have for an event. Sometimes, I will decide days in advance, and other times I will grab items and formulate a look there and then.” When the clock strikes 7pm, however, it’s family time and an opportunity for Jelena to satiate her Gossip Girl cravings. Ensconced in her favourite part of the house, the living room has huge sofas so comfy that “friends often fall asleep in them.” Jelena credits a wonderful extended family and close friends, as well as her staff, as integral to the smooth running of her household. “My girls are part of the family – they are always with us, and have been for 10 years. LINA SAMMAN
THE FACE OF NINA RICCI IN THE MIDDLE EAST Probably the most photographed lady in Dubai, it’s astonishing to hear the gorgeous, always perfectly-coiffed, Lina Samman confess, “I mostly do my own hair and make-up, not just because I know exactly how to, but also to avoid wasting time at salons.” Time is of the essence for this style ambassador and much-in demand social queen, although she admits to a rather hands-off, flexible approach to her household. “My two daughters have grown up to an age where each runs her own daily programme. I don’t follow a specific routine in running my home. Things tend to change every day and I will act accordingly.” When it comes to grocery shopping, she admits, “I have someone at home to take care of the daily supermarket shop,” although she professes to having a knack in the kitchen: “I cook for sure! I like to cook Middle Eastern food and can also handle other international cuisines. I admit I have a great love for snacks and for chocolates; I don’t mind having a chocolate bar, cinnamon roll, cupcakes or Pinkberry
yogurt every day!” Her home is her refuge from the perpetual party scene yet, ironically, it’s where she manages to tune in and stay in touch with what’s happening around the world. “It’s where I check my emails and watch TV; in particular the news as there are so many political and natural crises happening nowadays.” It’s also where she gets to play dress up as she insists on styling herself. “I enjoy wearing clothes from Nina Ricci, Chanel, Dior, Dolce&Gabbana, Missoni and many others. I have a very special relationship with Nina Ricci as I was privileged to be chosen as the face of the brand in the Middle East. They’ve designed a couture limited edition bag called Cabochon Lina, which is hugely flattering.” Even when dressed down, she’s relatively dressed up. “I’ll wear a pair of jeans with an interesting top, sometimes with a blazer or a Chanel jacket, a jumpsuit or maxi-dresses. It really depends on how casual I need to be, as well as my mood at that day.” Not one to take her A-list like clothing cupboards
lightly, she confesses: “I always keep my items well organised so I can easily select what I need, but I always wish I had much more space for my things. In general, I decide what to wear at the last minute, but for some occasions I do plan ahead as it might affect my hairstyle and influence my make-up.” Home is where she entertains, relaxes and works in equal measure. “I usually receive many of my friends during the day or host cosy dinners at night. When I am at home I like to wear comfortable yet elegant clothes. I usually prefer wearing my Juicy Couture training suit or dresses, or shorts and T-shirts. They’ll always be good enough to greet unexpected guest! We also invite friends over to watch movies at our movie theatre. Although I have a regular masseuse who comes to my home once a week, I enjoy going to spas too. That’s how I pamper myself, especially as this is the only sport that I do!” Does she have any pearls of wisdom for those who wonder how she can manage it all so effortlessly and stay smiling? “I have no special secrets, but I really like to keep myself well organised and always keep a detailed diary of important things to be done.”

SARAH BELHASA
VICE-CHAIRMAN OF SAIF BELHASA GROUP AND OWNER OF STUDIO 8
MAKE-UP COURTESY OF INGLOT
Just glancing at Sarah Belhasa’s daily schedule is enough to exhaust most people. This Dubai-based powerhouse is the owner of Studio 8 boutique on Jumeirah Beach Road, vice-chairman of the Saif Belhasa Group and mother to two boisterous boys, 12-year-old Abdullah and nine-year-old Rashid. She’s also one of the most prominent, and indeed immaculately turned out, personalities on the city’s social scene. Is there a secret to having it all? “There is a system to everything in my life; I believe in organisation and methodology; everyone is trained and everything clearly mapped out, whether it is packing for a trip, finding that perfect outfit or organising the children’s day.” She also sets out clear parameters: “I don’t entertain at home. Home is for family. Every Friday we spend time at our farm in Al Awir, which is a truly blissful place. There is so

much open space and we have deer and birds that we can feed; we always have a traditional lunch of ouzi, relax by the pool and spend time as a unit. I have no problems balancing time between my family and my work.” She insists that it is essential to “make time for everything,” adding: “I do my meditation and yoga daily – that is my ‘me-time’. I believe in positive thoughts influencing your life.” She’s also an accomplished cook. “I adore cooking during the holidays in our house in Evian, in France, I don’t have anywhere to rush to and the climate is perfect. Biryani features prominently on the menu, and I can dish up Arabic food or Chinese food, too. My father insisted his daughters be independent, so we were made to learn how to cook in our holidays.” The calm of Evian contrasts sharply with her fast-paced life amongst Dubai’s most
glamorous socialites. “My friends ask me how I do it, but I have always loved to dress up. It is not a chore; I do my own hair and makeup and can be ready in 10 minutes. Even sartorially, I am organised – I take care of my things and know every item that I have. I match my abaya with accessories and keep everything out, ready to wear. I don’t just throw on something in a hurry!” Her bedroom is where she escapes to for peace and quiet. “It is my favourite room in the house. My husband Saif keeps joking that he’s going to make it smaller so I don’t spend so much time in it!” And it is the men in her life whom she credits with helping her achieve her goals. “Saif is always there to support me and has made my dreams come true. My father educated me and gave me the motivation to succeed. A woman has multiple roles – we must live our lives to the fullest. I can’t sit at home. I need to be out there. I want to be known as someone who helped spread positivity and achieved something.” STUDIO 8 IS LOCATED ON JUMERIAH BEACH ROAD (04) 3443934

FARAH GOKAL-GHAZZAWI
CO-FOUNDER AND CO-OWNER OF SWEET STUFF “There’s nothing like a good home-made lobster mac‘n’cheese! I adore making comfort food when I get time in the kitchen,” divulges Farah Gokal-Ghazzawi, founder of American dessert emporium Sweet Stuff and mother of four. It comes as no surprise that Dubai’s answer to Nigella Lawson, who “loves cooking”, is a dab hand in the kitchen, as well an all-round domestic goddess who skilfully avoids any meltdowns when the staff have the day off. “Daddy and the kids take over the kitchen on weekends. My husband’s must-have creation is raspberry cream-cheese French toast... it has tonnes of sugar and syrup, but I pretend not to notice. Chocolate chip pancakes are another classic. We are all pretty creative in whipping things up.” When glammed up for events, Farah dons 106

Ayesha Depala, but seeing as she tries to “never to leave home before all the kids are asleep” being on time can be tricky. “I’m always fashionably late to evening functions. That’s also why my make-up and hair is always done at home.” The only way Farah, who claims to live “mostly in track-pants,” can juggle everything is to base her work out of home. “My office is the dining table, a few propped pillows on the bed, the floor during playtime, and under the tree at the park,” she says. “My trusty MacBook, iPad, BlackBerry and iPhone are my support staff! I’m lucky that my parents help out with the kids so my husband, Adel, and I get time to travel together.” Aside from trips with her husband, she relaxes by watching TV. “Our evenings
are filled with our favourite shows. We are addicted to Alias and 24.” Far from being a serene haven, she admits her home is simple, cosy and always filled with lots of noise. “With the kids and their friends, at any given time you will find a tea party in one corner while a sword fight or Wii game is happening in another.” Keeping lists of tasks helps her stay in check, especially when it comes to the mammoth task of grocery shopping for six, which,“is done on a mass scale every week”. This goes some way to explain her ultimate foodie wish; “I wish there was a WholeFoods in Dubai! I would be in heaven as it’s my absolutely favourite place to eat and shop.” Farah’s top tip for those trying to achieve it all? “Everything has to have its time, but remember to breathe when things don’t go according to plan. It doesn’t always work out the way it’s supposed to, and that’s when I have to remember to laugh!” ■ WWW.LOVESWEETSTUFF.COM

LALE ANSINGH, FOUNDER AND MANAGING DIRECTOR OF RAWAJ INTERNATIONAL, AND LIZZY ANSINGH, 25, STUDENT LALE: Lizzy was one of the easiest and most down to earth children, but she loved to challenge my authority and use smart antics and humour to get her way. It rarely worked, but her mischievousness made me smile. The discipline fell to me, and it was hard keeping a straight face at times. Her father was a different story – she’s always been his princess. My Turkish heritage is an important aspect of our lives, and from that Lizzy has a real sense of family; she’s compassionate, strong, intelligent and incredibly loyal. She’s always had a positive approach to life, regardless of what’s thrown her way and I admire that hugely. She sees the good in any situation, and has taught me not to sweat the small stuff, to look at the bigger picture and to count my blessings. Wherever we have lived, home has always been filled with the sound of laughter from her and her friends – she has such a contagious zest for life. As parents, we highlighted the importance of working and playing hard, and Lizzy was very independent with regards to getting schoolwork done and her capacity for creativity is endless. That said, her childhood wasn’t always a settled one. She was born in Holland, but before her first birthday we’d moved to Argentina for her father’s work. We lived in over five different
countries while Lizzy was growing up, meaning she had to leave school and friends behind a lot. This definitely brought us closer as a family over the years – each move just reinforced our closeness. The diverse experiences also helped to create the open and well-rounded 25-yearold she is today. When Lizzy was a teenager she was at a stage of ‘rebellion’ and I became her worst enemy! My approach to motherhood has been one of affection, caring and love, with constant encouragement and support. I do have a bark, but Lizzy’s always known I’ll never bite! Luckily, when she hit 15 things started to calm down, we communicated with each other better and now I can easily say Lizzy is my best and closest friend. Not one day goes by where I don’t need her advice. I remember when she left home for the first time to move to Holland for her studies – I thought my world was going to end! It created such a void in my life. But now, after five years, she’s back with a Masters degree in her pocket and I’m so proud of her. As a mother, your capacity to worry about your children is endless. At 18, Lizzy was involved in a terrible car accident. The phone call that came at 3am one morning was the most heart-wrenching moment I’ve ever experienced. It’s times like these that you realise you can’t protect your children forever. But relationships change and now she worries about me – showing her compassion and loyalty once again. Now she’s back home, we cook, go to the beach, watch movies…We laugh at absolutely everything and have so much fun together; isn’t that what life’s all about?
LIZZY: My mother has this vibrant, funloving zest for life and an unparalleled energy that I truly admire – she’s a go-getter in all senses of the word; honest, loyal, strong and so hardworking. She is my rock and such an inspiration. Growing up, my father’s work took us around the world, so we were constantly adapting to a new home every few years, from Argentina to Saudi Arabia. I have such amazing memories and feel very privileged. Because of the travelling, my parents were the only constants in my life, and this reflected in the incredible bond we have. They always supported and encouraged me and turned every new experience into a fun and exciting adventure. My mother’s always been hugely affectionate and attentive, spoiling me with a million kisses and hugs. Even now, when I’m 25 years old, she can’t stop herself sometimes! Despite her constant support, I think I challenged her
patience when I was a teenager – I slammed doors and mastered the art of talking back. She was a tough cookie, and we simply didn’t understand where each other was coming from, but, luckily, it didn’t last long. We now have a mutual respect for one another and an understanding that goes way beyond the normal mother-daughter dynamic. Passion is something my mother exudes – about work, family, friends and her life in general. She puts her heart into everything she does. The initial stages of starting her own PR company weren’t always easy, but she never gave up. It’s that passion and perseverance that has made her the successful businesswoman she is today. She is a living example that if you want something, why shouldn’t you go after it? She taught me that the best way to end a day is to go to bed with a clear conscience. She also lives by the mantra ‘what goes around, comes around’ and that goodness and giving is a gift. If I could be half the woman she is, well, it would be an honour. MAY 2011

SISTER ACT
DINA: Rima and I have an older sister/ younger sister relationship – she’s very caring and spoils me and I have a lot of respect for her. When I was little, she always took care of me, but she hated it when I started to want to be like her! Though as soon as we moved past that phase, she was back to being over-protective! Fashion was the big thing we shared, with Rima experimenting on me for hours with different hairstyles and make-up. We grew up by the beach in Marbella, Spain, surrounded by sun, sand, good food and ice cream. Anything goes in Spain, so we never had any concerns about being judged or worrying about what people thought. Even now, my year isn’t complete without a Marbella summer! When we moved to Dubai, Rima was 14 and I was nine, so we had completely different lives and interests. I was still a kid, while Rima was rebelling and driving my parents completely nuts! Looking at her now, you’d never think she was a rebellious party animal, but she was! When you’re young a four-and-a-half-year age gap feels huge and it’s difficult to relate to one another, but the gap has slowly become less noticeable and we’re now much closer. Our major strength is our mutual respect for each
other, though a weakness may be that we’re very different individuals with separate personalities and a completely different way of doing things. Rima’s taught me to give without expecting anything in return and also how to deal with social situations better – I used to be terrible at that, while she was always a social butterfly! She’s kind, caring, punctual, supportive, a workaholic and beautiful inside and out. I have lots of fond memories of my sister, but my most recent is of us working, acting silly and laughing together; busy creating a success of our clothing line, Dinz. It was a huge moment in our relationship, but these memories are priceless and brought us even closer together; she’s one of my best friends. There’s still an element of older sister/ younger sister to our relationship, but there’s more balance now. Don’t tell her this, but I’m also a bit scared of her – she has zero patience, she’s always right and when she’s angry, it isn’t pretty! However, we both go out of our way to help each other. And, at the end of the day, material items perish and family is what truly matters – as long as you have good health and relationships, that’s all you can ask for, and so, for my relationship with my big sister, I’m truly thankful.
RIMA: Although Dina is a little diva, she’s one of those people who’s always been smart without trying! Our relationship dynamic has changed over the last few years and now I have to admit I ask my little sister for advice all the time. She was a real goodie-two-shoes growing up – always reading and doing puzzles. I used to play dress up with her but when I hit my teens and became too ‘cool’, I kicked her out of my room. I feel awful about that now. Our relationship developed when we discovered similar interests such as fashion, art, and sarcasm! Now, we have an amazing relationship and we rarely fight. Dina’s very chilled out, unlike me! And we’ve definitely got closer since moving to Dubai. Partly as you
stick to family here, because it’s hard to find genuine friends. I remember when my husband was seriously ill a few years ago and I was stuck in hospital in London with him for months. Dina left everything in Dubai to fly over and support me – she stayed with me throughout. Dina’s taught me to be more accepting and relax more. She’s always telling me to watch the news more so I can see what’s going on in the real world and appreciate what I have; she’s a wise little sister! That said, she does infuriate me; she treats her bags, shoes and clothes like people and puts them all in boxes, going crazy if something happens to them. It’s funny as it’s the total opposite of me – I have no value for things as they are just things at the end of the day.

BROTHERS & SISTERS PRIMROSE SKELTON, 33, EDITOR OF LOVESTYLE. COM AND HENRY SKELTON, 29, KEY ACCOUNT MANAGER FOR MMI PRIMROSE: Henry and I are close, but that wasn’t always the case when we were younger. I took on quite a ‘mumsy’ role, and was often telling him off or bossing him around – he was definitely like a little toy! We had quite an outdoorsy childhood, with Henry, our sister Thea and I all playing in the garden. He was always fishing or playing cricket, though he probably felt like one of the girls, as we used to rope him into games that involved dressing up, cooking and shopping! As a teenager he was a bit of a nightmare, but who wouldn’t be in all female household – can you imagine the nagging! In hindsight, I probably should have been a bit more patient… As we got older, we got closer, bonding over our social lives when we both moved to London in 2000. Now we’re really close and at 29, Henry’s such a nice young man. We love to party together or eat in fine restaurants. Henry’s definitely got the gift of the gab and can light up a room with his conversation and wit. He’s also a handsome man – but he is vain, so the only time there’s any rivalry is when it comes to looking good! He also spends too
IMAGE VIKRAM GAWDE
HENRY: Primrose has always been the organised and caring one, arranging family meals and things like that, and she makes an effort to stay in touch with the whole family. Growing up, she was a great older sister. I know she really helped my mum out with the cleaning and housework, and generally taking great care of her siblings. I have two older sisters and, to be frank, I didn’t always enjoy it! Growing up in a house with three women and no brothers for company could be quite frustrating and a bit of an emotional roller coaster! On the positive side, they were always there to iron my shirt or cook me dinner before I went out, so I shouldn’t complain! We’ve always been close, though music probably brought us even closer – it’s what we bonded over as teenagers. Although we’re very different, we rarely argued and when we did, it was over typical brother/sister stuff like the remote control! When I hit about 16 years old, Primrose became increasingly helpful in matters of style. I think one of the best pieces of advice she’s given me is the importance of being well presented, and, as we share a common interest
much on clothes, but who am I to talk! Henry’s strengths are his charisma and quick wit, while one of mine is confidence, so that makes for a nice combination. He’s taught me that if you put your mind to it, you can be anything. Today, he has an amazing job with MMI and is full of confidence. Plus, his job involves going out a lot, so I see him at lots of fabulous events, which is great. I still worry about him, though – it’s my duty as his big sister! When he moved here in 2010, I worried about him driving on the crazy roads and finding somewhere nice to live… And when our auntie died six years ago, it probably affected Henry more, as he was travelling at the time, so it was hard to leave him, and everyone else, when I moved to Dubai. But we’re a positive family, so we picked ourselves up again. When I got married two years ago, Henry was an usher and I was really moved when I saw him get quite emotional during the service. It was the best day, and seeing Henry looking all dapper in his amazing designer suit made me so proud.
in fashion, I’ve always taken her advice onboard. She also became very helpful in dishing out good advice regarding the fairer sex and, over the years, I’ve taken her advice on everything from work to finances. When our auntie died, it was incredibly distressing for both of us, however, Primrose seemed to cope much better than I did. In terms of celebrations, we’ve had loads over recent years – Primrose’s wedding was a fantastic event and one of the happiest days of my life. I’d like to think that I’m a good brother – we’re both very reasonable (her more so than me!) and I can’t remember the last time we argued. There’s little than annoys me about her, though because she’s so organised she leaves little to chance, so maybe that. When Primrose moved to Dubai just over five years ago there were thousands of miles between us, but we made a real effort to see each other when either one visited. Now we live in the same country, we spend more time together eating out and as a family. She’s usually the catalyst, so I’m grateful for that and I know she’ll always be there when I need my next piece of advice! ■ MAY 2011

Playing on his previous work under his own namesake line, often referencing Oriental silhouettes, Christophe Lemarie balanced a fresh insight with respect for the establishment for A/W11
n the heady and always changing world of fashion, Hermès has remained a constant, an institution. The house has over 170 years of heritage, it’s a French force – rich in a history of equestrian glamour, and boasting followers of the Birkin brandishing diehard variety when it comes to presentations during the Paris collections each season. Earlier this year, the label officially changed hands creatively when 45-yearold designer Christophe Lemarie took his end of show bow – his first step into the Hermès spotlight – following a runway of clean, creamy, snowy luxury for A/W11. It takes a certain level of strength to step up so seamlessly to this level of pressure, not to mention taking the reins from Jean Paul Gaultier only late last year. Following the show, Elle Timms spoke to the man who, after his 10-year post at Lacoste (and close identity with the brand’s resurgence), has been given the challenge of helming Hermès. Christophe’s attitude and approach to the task has always been about one thing, respect. “I’ve always been fascinated by Hermès” he says, “and, of course, I already had images in my mind. I went to the archives to explore the brand’s culture. You have to put yourself at the service of an existing heritage.” And how did he feel about his revered predecessor? “Of course, it was a lot of pressure. But I’ve been welcomed by

Pierre-Alexis Dumas (Artistic Managing Director of Hermès), the whole house, the different designers and teams. So it was a mix of excitement, anxiety and confidence.” Jean Paul Gaultier’s sign off S/S11 collection was a firm and fabulous nod to the label’s equestrian roots. We wonder whether that gave Christophe a point to depart from, to symbolise his beginning, to which he swiftly answers: “As soon as I started thinking about the collection, I actually had in mind the nomadic spirit of Hermès, incorporating a kind of sporty spirit, which is my reference also to the beginning of Hermès.” He goes on to say: “I thought about a mix of different influences, from Mongolia, to the Hermès heritage, across the leather and colour of the 20s... in a contemporary way.” It certainly translated through the physical show, with a peaceful and dreamily oneiric affair, Christophe selected Chinese musician Wu Fei to play a traditional ‘ghuzeng’

GBTIJPO IFSNoT FYDMVTJWF (a traditional Chinese string instrument), “and she did so in a very modern and avante-garde way…” he adds. The music acted as a mirrored aural accompaniment to the looks on the runway. Having previously worked for Christian Lacroix, Yves Saint Laurent, Thierry Mugler, and, of course, Lacoste, it seems apparent that the French designer is extremely patriotic, although Christophe insists, “It really has never been a conscious decision to only work for French fashion houses, it’s just by chance.” But surely a seat on the throne at Hermès is the ultimate post? “I’m very honoured and proud. Hermès has a long story in ready-to-wear, and I want to write a new chapter in its history, following the talent of designers like Martin Margiela and Jean Paul Gaultier.” He enthuses. When queried over his vision and method to achieve this, he explains how a return to elegance, classicism and quality is the future. “The Hermès woman is a woman who travels; whether in reality, or in mind. She’s a woman who looks for a timeless, convertible and essential wardrobe.” And his parting style-over-fashion advice to her? “Build a personal uniform, a woman should have her own style vocabulary to reveal her personality. That is what will help her to feel confident.” ■

bold explosion hit this summer, splattering nails, lips, cheeks and eyes in bright hues. In a way it harks back to the good old 80s where ‘putting on your face’ really did mean a liberal application of colour all over. Our foremothers may well remember this as a time when make-up practically preceded the wearer into a room, accompanied by the heady scent of hairspray solvent, of course. One’s armoury most certainly required a dedicated vanitycase en vacance (probably exceeding current cabinbaggage limitations) and heaven forbid the notion of travelling light. The decade’s Vogue cover girls paint a pretty conclusive picture: Brooke Shields with lilac lids, ochre lips and carefully shaded bronze cheeks; Kim Alexis with coral pout, rosy cheeks and heavily kohled eyes shaded with fuchsia and finished with thick black brows; and Rachel Williams with shiny pink lipstick, orange bronzer and pastel dusted eyes with lashes to die for. Just for the record these ladies weren’t donning sculpted LBDs and minimalist jewellery either. Think dangling earrings, a la Alex Carrington, and rainbow bright ensembles – colour, and lots of it, ruled the news stands and the wardrobes du jour. Natalia Vodianova for Guerlain this spring wouldn’t have looked out of place on those covers (although admittedly, the chandelier earrings were in absence) with her carefully executed cat’s eyeliner,

PRE-LIPSTICK, LINE LIPS PRECISELY WITH A SUPER-SHARPENED LIPLINER IN THE EXACT COLOUR MATCH, MAKING SURE TO COLOUR IN YOUR ENTIRE POUT WITH THE LINER AS WELL TO AVOID THAT VERY 90S AFFLICTION OF THE CONTRAST OUTLINED LIP peony blush cheeks and amaranth lips. Meanwhile, Clarins’s new Neo Pastel ‘watercolour palette’ might well have been designed specifically for aping Shields’ lavender dusted eyes. This season’s bright obsession adds darker drama for night by steering away from the pop-kaleidoscope options. And honestly speaking, the evening is where this look truly belongs: packing as much product as this during the day, even if one is on trend, might just scare one’s co-workers. Matte brick red lips are worn with eyes contoured and shaded in an effusion of cobalt and powder blue shadows, set against a milky white complexion. Or amethyst-deep purple eyeshadows make an unlikely partnership for precision outlined orange-red lips. Bobbi Brown’s new Rich Lip Colour formulation “combines pigments with a colourless lipstick base; the result is crisp, clear colour and full coverage without a heavy feelingâ€?, explains the make-up artist herself. And it is the intensely concentrated pigment that is key to this new take on the 80’s bold lip. Shine is out, matte is in. Pre-lipstick, line lips precisely with a super-sharpened lipliner in the exact colour match, making sure to colour in your entire pout with the liner as well to avoid that very 90’s affliction of the contrast outlined lip. LancĂ´me make-up artist Eman Al Haj offers the following advice on executing a smoky purple eye to go with those bold lips: “Blending colours is all you really need to do
to. The first step is to prepare the eyelid. Eye make-up can get stuck in creases and start melting, so keep your eyelid oil free by applying a base. Apply the eyeliner along the border of your upper eyelashes; you can use purple eyeliner, but black works, too. Draw a thicker line in the middle and smudge the liner so that the bottom of your lid is darker than the remaining part, but without a distinct line visible. Sweep a lighter shade of eyeshadow through the middle of the smudged liner. Add a dash of purple on the centre of the lid and smudge and blend upwards again. Finish with an eyeshadow as close to your skin colour as possible to give the smoky eye a distinct shape. Peter Philips at Chanel is the azure hue’s secret backer, dubbing it “the ultimate universal colour. Les 4 Ombres in Lagons includes shimmer-infused Prussian blue, pale periwinkle, grey tinged blueberry and the palest cornflower. Shade, blend and contour over the socket and well beyond the minimalist confines of the lid. Dolce&Gabbana’s Secret Garden collection brings some pretty daytime interpretations of the latest pigment-rich colours: an intense matte shadow in spearmint green (Eden) or indigo crayon liner (Lilac) look current, yet not too drastic for daylight. Do steer clear of their purple lipstick though; the look may well have elements of an 80s revival, but it’s not a fancy dress party.

he launch of Rouge Coco Shine sees the multitalented singer, actress, model and all around French beauty Vanessa Paradis placed in the spotlight as the face of the lipstick line. Photographed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino,Vanessa is the embodiment of the perfect Chanel ambassador. A starlet since the age of 14, Vanessa has lived her life on the celebrity stage. She prefers to retain an air of mystery around her relationship with long-time love Johnny Depp by escaping the limelight of Hollywood in favour of spending time on their farm in Plan-de-la-Tour in the rural south of France. Come with us as we take a glimpse into Vanessa’s beauty philosophy and step behind the scenes on the set of her photoshoot for Rouge Coco Shine.
CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING THE FACE OF CHANEL’S NEW ROUGE COCO SHINE
Thank you – it’s a beautiful product. In fact, I almost use it as a lipbalm. Lipgloss can be sticky, whereas Rouge Coco Shine melts. We barely feel it, it’s like a second skin. IN TERMS OF LIPSTICK, WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR?
I always opt to wear colours that suit my complexion. I like real reds or very natural shades. The new line makes me want to dare to wear pastel colours. COULD YOU PICK A FAVOURITE SHADE?
I love Boy, both for the name and the shade. WHAT DOES THE IDEA OF LIPSTICK EVOKE TO YOU?
A lipstick is a very sensual gesture. WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH PETER PHILIPS, THE GLOBAL CREATIVE DIRECTOR FOR CHANEL MAKE-UP?
I met Peter for the first time during the shooting of the Rouge Coco campaign, he is much more than a make-up artist; he is a real artist, with the talent of a great painter. 168

Happiness to me is being surrounded by the people I love.

thoroughly effective cleansing is just as crucial to beautiful skin as any good moisturiser. Don’t be tempted to simply use a baby wipe and hope for the best. Although it may be gentle on your skin, it just isn’t appropriate. As beauty expert Laura Mercier succinctly clarifies, “a baby’s butt isn’t covered in make-up that requires special ingredients for proper removal. Make-up is often the least of one’s problems anyway; general grit and grime, pore-cloggingly thick sun-cream, skin’s natural sebum secretions and dead skin cells all need to be delicately wiped away to achieve a crystal clear complexion. The drying effects of the sun and air conditioning encourages oily skin and this, combined with a sandy atmosphere, results in a thin layer of dusty grease coating your poor visage at the end of a hard day’s work. Your cleanser should remove all this in a gentle way, without over-drying the skin or disturbing its natural balance: the last thing you want is to over-stimulate your skin into producing even more excess oil. With an effective cleansing product you should never need to vigorously rub your face in order for it to feel clean. Sweep your hands over it with a feather light touch and reserve a slightly more energetic approach for the weekly exfoliation. So next time you return home a little tired, dying to flop into bed without tending to your cleansing routine with due care, consider this as a word of caution: allowing old mascara to reside on your lashes can cause them to dry out, become brittle and prone to breaking off; leaving old make-up on can clog pores, leading to unwanted congestion; and omitting thorough cleaning of the T-zone can result in bacteria-based breakouts. Now that’s what we call cause for cleansing.

CFBVUZ TQSJOH DMFBOJOH You might think that anti-ageing is a big claim for a cleanser which is essentially washed off, but the modus operandi of your cleaning products can have a significant impact on the ageing of your skin. A good cleanser will remove certain elements whilst leaving the overall integrity of the skin’s balance intact. Strip too much moisture and hydration levels will fall, resulting ultimately in less plump contours. MMP (matrix metalloproteinases) are a very specific target for many anti-ageing cleansing products. These enzymes play an important role in the body’s own cell recycling processes and are essential in wound healing and clearing pathways for immune response cells to reach infected areas as they break down other proteins. However, over the course of normal ageing the MMP levels in the skin rise, which means existing collagen is broken down faster than one might like leading to fine lines and wrinkles. The methodology is simple: reduce MMP levels and slow the rate of collagen breakdown. Every beauty house has its star products and while Touche Éclat is undeniably the jewel in YSL’s crown, it’s no exaggeration to say that the Temps Majeur skincare collection is rapidly earning some stellar stripes. The precious Ganoderma Lucidum fungus, used for centuries in Chinese medicine for its antiageing and regenerating properties and described as ‘the mushroom of eternal youth’, is key to the product range. The cleansing balm Tempe Majeur Baume Nettoyant morphs from a balm into an oil that will loosen even stubborn make-up when massaged into dry skin. Add water and it becomes a soft milk, which rinses off easily. The result? Skin that is clear, smooth and un-irritated.
ANTIAGEING
(artificial preservatives whose widespread use in skincare is increasingly controversial), sulfates (found in numerous toiletries but implicated in eye and skin irritation), synthetic dyes (some have carcinogenic links), phthalates (which can have adverse effects on the reproductive system), or triclosan (an anti-bacterial agent which has been linked to contact dermatitis). What the Supreme Cleansing Foam does include is a polysaccharide, naturally derived from the Indian plant Cassia Angustifolia, which leaves a protective barrier on the skin’s surface to harness and retain moisture throughout the day. Other extracts specifically target the causes of blemishes: cactus flower is known for its anti-inflammatory properties; ginseng is included for toning and antipollution strengths; and camellia provides astringent and toning powers. Remove eye make-up, including waterproof mascara, with the Supreme Cleansing Oil, which cleanses without leaving a greasy residue. And finish your routine with the Smart Dual Action Exfoliator used once a week, which combines a gentle gel texture, for most of the face, with a heavier-duty scrub, specifically to target congestion in the T-zone.
WHEN LOOKING TO RID YOUR SKIN OF VISITORS, IT IS JUST AS WORTH LOOKING AT WHAT ISN’T IN A PRODUCT AS WHAT IS
When looking to rid your skin of unwelcome visitors, it is just as worth looking at what isn’t in a product as what is. Sephora’s new, extensive skincare range comes with a sizeable array of cleaning products ranging from the Gentle Exfoliator Cleansing Cream to the Soothing Cleansing Milk and the Triple Action Cleansing Water. It is formulated without any parabens

Cleaning skin that is already prone to dryness can be a minefield. Elemis’ new Melting Cleansing Gel combines numerous extracts to ensure the cleansing process is gentle yet effective, and that hydration is maximised throughout the day. The gel glides over the skin, without dragging it, and flows off rinsed with warm water. As with all their cleansers, the aim is to deeply cleanse using botanical extracts without resorting to harsh, synthetic detergents. The wonderfully effective argan oil is incorporated as a rich source of minerals. The light oil provides a tensor effect to the skin, helping to support the existing cellular networks and boost visible firmness. Assai fruit, a wellknown super food, is a potent source of anti-oxidants, which help maintain the skin’s natural oil barrier against excess exposure to environmental stressors. Rosemary leaf further stabilises the sebaceous gland function and oil flow, helping skin to effectively moisturise itself, but without over-producing oil. The inclusion of rice silk helps to eliminate any excess shine or moisture, which may rear its head throughout the day as a result of skin challenged by the all too familiar varied assaults of air conditioning, humidity and heat, and bright sunlight.

Use a gentle clarifying shampoo for colourtreated hair once a week or every four shampoos.” Rona O-Connor, hair colourist to actress Blake Lively, www.lukaro.com SKINCARE “According to dermatologists, 80 per cent of all ageing can be directly related to exposure to sun light. Stick to a simple routine, including the biggest part of all; sunscreen. Try Dermalogica’s fantastic SPF30 Solar Defence Booster. However, numerous studies confirm that breakfast skippers smoke more, drink more alcohol, take less exercise and consume more calories per day than breakfast eaters. HAIR “When blow-drying your hair, use a low EMF, ceramic ionic dryer. These dry the hair quicker and are actually less drying to the hair. They also emit negative ions, which are good for you and the environment. Conventional dryers emit positive ions which are found in polluted areas and are not healthy for you or the environment.” John Masters, beauty brand founder and hairstylist, www.johnmasters.com SKINCARE “Skin becomes drier as oil glands become less active. The skin around your eyes starts to thin and collagen and elastin are breaking down, causing more fine lines and wrinkles to develop. Cellulite rears its bumpy head and fluid retention is more common. If you eat too much salt, cut this down to reduce fluid retention. Watch your alcohol intake – too much will bring on spider veins. Also, get your eyes tested; too much squinting can quicken the onset of wrinkles.” Dr Maurizio Viel, London College for Aesthetic Surgery Gulf, www.lcas.ae HEALTH “When you are in your 30s you tend to have huge commitments to family and work and fitting in exercise becomes problematic. People tend to do one huge workout at the weekend, and unfortunately that’s not going to do much. Try and fit in a couple of 45-minute sessions of resistance training which will be much more useful.” Josh Salzmann, celebrity fitness trainer

Very dark matte colours or flat beige will make your lips look thinner, so they’re not really advisable over a certain age unless you’ve got incredibly full lips. I tend to look for colours that are a few shades more intense than your lip colour – beautiful rosy pinks and rich apricots.” Lisa Eldridge, make-up artist, www.lisaeldridge.com HAIR “In some cases, once a woman gets into her mid-40s and beyond, she can find that she has half the amount of hair as before. I believe we should approach haircare as we do skincare, with the inclusion of anti-oxidants and ceramides like those found in expensive skin creams.” Frederic Fekkai, hairstylist, www.fekkai.com SKINCARE “Did you know that the majority of sun damage caused on the hands is from driving with your hands on the steering wheel? Front windshields do little to filter out UVA/UVB rays, so when you’re driving in the car, your hands are getting a lot of sun damage. ’ve had long hair for as long as I can remember. It defined me. I was the type of person who would have nightmares about having my hair cut off. Occasionally, though, I would fantasise about bobbing it (remember when the bob emerged as a strong trend in 2009), but never had the guts to do it. So instead, I bought wigs in different colours, which I would wear on special occasions or when I travelled. I had a black one, a blonde one, and a red one. But over the past few months, my hair has slowly grown into an obsession. Every time I saw a beautiful woman, I would imagine how much better she’d look with a bob. I started noticing bobs everywhere: in photoshoots, ad campaigns, movies. Suddenly, long hair seemed so Kardashian. So I decided to… do it. But because it was such a big deal, I didn’t want to go with my usual hairdresser. I wanted someone totally new – a fresh new look deserves a fresh new approach. A few friends suggested a salon that was meant to be very good, however, it was pretty far from where I live, but I called, booked an appointment and voila, the wheels were set in motion. The night before my appointment I couldn’t sleep. I was overwhelmed with anxiety and excitement, like the night before the first day of school or a new job. So you can imagine the epic anticlimactic frustration that occurred when I arrived at the hairdressers (having cancelled all my other plans that morning) only to find that there was a misunderstanding with my booking, and I didn’t have an appointment that day after all! I walked out, and burst into tears. Feeling splendidly sorry for myself, I made my way towards my car; feeling deflated by my existential fashion and beauty crisis.
The good news was, however, this little ‘incident’ made me more resolute than ever. The following week, I did a random Google search, picked a place I’d never heard of and went early one Saturday morning without telling a soul. The place was empty. It was just me, the lady who washed my hair, and the stylist. It was all over in under an hour. My hair? All gone – well, almost. I felt reborn, liberated, a new me. It was as if a load had been lifted
off my shoulders. I felt like I could now be anything I wanted to be because I was no longer attached to my long hair, or the person at the end of it. To cut a long story short (pun somewhat intended): if contemplating a bob, my advice is to do it. You may just end up having a pseudo religious or existential experience. And if not, as a dear friend once said to me, the great thing about hair is, it will always grow back. ■

REDEFINING NATURAL BEAUTY A LIGHTWEIGHT, LUXURIOUS LOOK THAT’S GOOD FOR YOUR SKIN Natural make-up is the latest rave in the beauty industry and it’s no surprise. It’s been long known that natural ingredients are great for your skin, often used to restore it to its healthy glow. So, what happens when you replace heavier synthetic ingredients with natural ones? “Max Factor’s new Xperience is expertly designed to give you naturally luxurious polished coverage that feels like it’s barely there. I love that it’s filled with natural ingredients and your skin will love it too,” says Samira Olfat Max Factor make-up artist.
EXPERT TIPS AND TRICKS NATURAL INGREDIENTS Mango, cucumber, rosehip, jojoba! Your skin loves these super hydrating, ultra moisturizing and often revitalizing ingredients, and the Xperience collection has got them all. The Xperience Foundation’s formula contains jojoba, cucumber water and rose hip, instead of the often-used heavier synthetic polymers and emollients. The result is a naturally lightweight, luxurious foundation that goes on smoothly, covers evenly and leaves skin feeling soft and silky. Xperience Sheer Gloss Balm’s formula is enriched with mango-butter and shea-butter - renowned for their fastaction conditioning benefits, which create a dazzling, naturally luxurious pout with soft supple lips. Xperience Mascara has an innovative formula with carnauba wax that volumises lashes up to 3 times vs.

NEW bare lashes. Coupled with Max Factor’s award-winning IFX brush for sleek and smooth application from root to tip, it leaves your lashes feeling lightweight, lifted, and free to flutter.
SUN PROTECTION Protecting our skin against the sun is extremely important. Overexposure to the sun can cause premature aging, including wrinkles and age spots. The Xperience collection’s foundation and sheer gloss are equipped with SPF 10 to help protect your skin against the sun’s harmful rays throughout the day.
For a dewy, airbrushed look, use your fingertips to dapple Xperience Foundation lightly and gently over your face and blend. This will not only ensure even coverage, but also give a soft, natural look. I love pouty lips – for a little extra poutiness, dab some Xperience sheer gloss balm just in the center of the upper and lower lips. This will give more of a heart-shaped effect. For a glamorous evening look, use a pair of fake eyelashes and coat them with Xperience Mascara. The mascara’s smooth, mousse texture will glide evenly, making the long lashes look like your own! For more information on the new Xperience collection, visit www.MaxFactorArabia.com.

EXPIRED SPERM
While women over a certain age are tying themselves in knots over the knowledge that they’d better not wait too long to have a child or their time will run out, most men seem to blithely assume there’s never an end point for them. But scientists have now discovered that a man’s biological clock starts ticking by age 30, a fact that most men, admits Dr Pankaj Shrivastav, Infertility Expert at Conceive – The Gynaecology and Fertility Hospital, aren’t aware of. “There are many examples of men fathering children at older ages, especially in this part of the world, so the idea of a male biological clock has never been particularly worrying,” he says. And while menopause signifies the end of a woman’s fertility, in men the clock isn’t so well defined. “Rather than stop altogether, as it does with women, it slows down,” he adds. Some of this ‘slowing down’ occurs in the sperm, with particular emphasis on levels of sperm production. Dr Samir Shirodkar, Specialist Urologist at Welcare Hospital, points out that an undefined, but probably high, proportion of men over 50 have unrecognised defects in sperm production and/or function. “Agerelated changes in the testes cause a decrease in sperm-producing activity and increased sperm cell degeneration in elderly men,” he says. In short, as men age, the percentage of damaged sperm they carry in their testes tends to increase. Sperm movement also begins to get sluggish with age, adds Dr Shrivastav. A 2006 study by scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and the University of California Berkeley, found a steady increase in sperm DNA fragmentation with increasing age of the study participants. Earlier research by the same team indicated that male reproductive ability gradually worsens with age, as sperm counts 190

decline and the sperm lose motility and the ability to swim in a straight line. Studies worldwide have found that with each passing decade, a man’s fertility decreases, while genetic risk to offspring slowly mounts. The findings are staggering: research by bioengineer Narendra Singh at the University of Washington in Seattle in 2003 compared differences in the sperm of older and younger men and found that while both develop damaged/unhealthy sperm, usually a process called apoptosis (a type of programmed cell death) eliminates any defective sperm. However, in older men, apoptosis didn’t occur as efficiently and therefore there was a higher percentage of damaged sperm in men aged 36 to 57 years than in those men aged 20 to 35 years, thereby increasing the risk of birth defects in children.
CONCEPTION
Despite Donald Trump and Rod Stewart becoming dads well into their golden years, they most likely took years, not months, to get their partners pregnant. A study published in the medical journal Fertility and Sterility in May 2006 led by Dr Elise de La Rochebrochard of the French National Health Institute, interviewed nearly 2,000 women about how long it took them to conceive. Among women aged 35 and older, those whose partners were 45 and older took five times longer to conceive than those whose partners were 25 or younger. One such case is 45-year-old Stan Sullivan, a British expat residing in Dubai whose son is 13. “My wife Emma is 38 years old and we’ve been trying for another child for two years. The doctor said Emma’s eggs were healthy, but it turned out my sperm was sluggish and therefore causing problems. I was shocked because being a personal

But the doctor said that my age, along with my excessive exercising, could be contributing factors in the problem. If I’d known how my age can influence my sperm health, we would’ve tried far sooner.” Even the rate of miscarriages and pre-term births, says Dr Shirodkar, increases with advancing paternal age when the maternal age was more than 35 years. In August 2006, researchers from the Columbia University School of Public Health in New York, led by Dr Karine Kleinhaus, conducted a study of nearly 14,000 women and found that the risk of miscarriage to expectant mothers was a whopping 60 per cent higher when the father was aged 40 or over compared to if he was 25 to 29 years old.

But that’s not all; according to Dr Shirodkar, men over 40 are also more than twice as likely to have a child with schizophrenia as men in their 20s, referring to an analysis in April 2001 of over 85,000 people by researchers from New York University School of Medicine, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. This study showed that men aged 45 to 49 are twice as likely to have children with schizophrenia as men under the age of 25 who become fathers, while the risk tripled for men over the age of 50. The autism findings are even more disturbing: a study recently published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, the journal of the American Medical Association, in September 2006 from the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in
New York, found that the offspring of men over 40 are more than five times more likely to have autism spectrum disorder than the offspring of men below 35 years. The team, however, couldn’t find a link between a mother's advancing age and autism. One individual who was surprised to hear about the male biological clock is 38-year-old Ali Jabber from Dubai, who’d delayed having children until he was financially secure. “My wife, Mona, and I have been married for the past year and we both agreed to start a family only when we were more settled in our careers. But after she turned 34 in October, she started insisting. Her doctor said that it’s not only her age that can increase the likelihood of miscarriage, but mine also. Like most men, I’ve perhaps naively always assumed I could make babies until I die, but after reading research on the male biological clock, it’s shocking to think that my choice of waiting could potentially be endangering the lives of my future children.”
DOWN’S SYNDROME
Although increasing maternal age has long been known to be associated with increased incidences of birth defects, the age of the father has been seen as irrelevant. Yet paternal age, says Dr Shirodkar, is also now very much a factor in half of Down’s Syndrome cases when the maternal age exceeded 35. The risk of having a child born with certain congenital problems may increase with the father’s age, American and Danish researchers say. A study of over 70,000 births, published on July 8, 2005 in the journal Human Reproduction using records in Denmark of mothers under 29 and men of any age, found the risk of a number of syndromes went up with increasing paternal age. A 45-year-old man is almost three times more likely to father a Down’s child than a man under 30, while for men over 50 the risk is almost fivefold. Down’s Syndrome and other conditions begin to increase in children fathered by men aged over 35. Another abnormality, Apert Syndrome, where a child is born with fused bones in their heads, hands, and feet, afflicts one in every 70,000 children, reiterates Dr Shirodkar. “It’s been LITTLE BLACK BOOK reported that men in U Dr Samir S. Shirodkar, Specialist their 50s and 60s are Urologist at Welcare Hospital, (04) 10 times as likely to 2827788 carry, and pass along, UÊDr Pankaj Shrivastav, Infertility the mutation as men Expert at Conceive – The Gynaecology under 30.” and Fertility Hospital, (06) 5771822
MALE BIOLOGICAL CLOCK FACTS 20s
A study based on sperm analysis of 100 men ranging from ages 22 to 80 conducted by the University of California Berkeley found that sperm began to deteriorate during a man’s 20s and sperm function, including motility, slowed down 0.7 per cent annually. 192

30s
In February 2001 in the journal Fertility and Sterility, researchers SA Kidd, B Eskenazi and AJ Wyrobek published a review based on studies conducted in the US of male fertility and found that between ages 30 and 50, the average man’s sperm declines by up to 30 per cent in volume, swims up to 37 per cent slower, and is five times more likely to be misshapen.
40s
Due to increased risk of genetic abnormalities in the offspring of older fathers, Dr Shirodkar points out that the American Society for Reproductive Medicine has set an upper age limit of age 40 for semen donors.
50s
Children of men aged 55 years and older are 1.37 times more likely to go on to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder than those of men aged 20 to 24, according to Dr Shirodkar.
IMAGE ISTOCK
THE AGE ISSUE
‘Advanced maternal age’, or AMA, is stamped on a woman’s medical files if she’s aged 35 or older at the time of delivery of her baby to call attention to the higher risks she faces, but doctors appear to be in no rush to include ‘advanced paternal age’ for would-be fathers. According to Dr Shirodkar, advanced paternal age should be discussed while counselling a couple for fertility. “But the male age limit is debatable as blood testosterone levels decline with age in most men, even in those who are healthy, and this decline probably begins around age 30,” he says. However, this rate of decline varies greatly between individuals. So while fertility declines along with testosterone levels as men age, it doesn’t drop to zero and essentially sperm can still do its job. One person who never imagined he’d become a father is American Julian Ward, who became a first-time dad to Jonah at age 50. “My first marriage, to Pam, lasted 20 years but was childless as she’d been diagnosed early on as infertile. Later Pam succumbed to ovarian cancer. Two years later, I met Amanda and we married after a year. Amanda’s 36, but to our delight she became pregnant a few months
later. In the seventh month of pregnancy, she had contractions and Jonah was delivered early; very small but completely normal. I immediately became a hands-on dad at an age when my friends were retiring. Now he’s five and sometimes I worry if I’ll be around long enough to see him graduate from college. Still, I’m fortunate to have experienced such joy in my life, especially when I’d thought it would never happen at my age... ”
ADVICE
Despite the growing research on a male biological clock, Dr Shrivastav maintains that it’s wrong to tell a man ‘if you’re 45 you shouldn’t have children’. “Ideally, men should have kids before then as there’s a definite decrease in sperm quality and motility, as well as the increased risk of miscarriage,” he stresses. But as the research shows; infertility isn’t just a woman’s problem and with the new awareness of a male biological clock, couples and their physicians can more accurately proceed with proper testing, diagnosis and treatment to help increase the chances of having healthy children. ■ MAY 2011

Decorated like a scene from Alice In Wonderland, S*uce boutique in The Dubai CARLA ATALLAH AND Mall invited the region’s most fabulous AYMAN FAKOUSSA fashionistas to a tea party celebrating its 10-year anniversary working with Tata Naka. Pastel-hued hors d’oeuvres and creamy smoothies with names such as Love Potion were served as guests mingled and fawned over the latest frocks on offer. The S*uce glam squad, including Zayan Ghandour co-owner and head buyer and Melina Mitri PR and marketing manager, looked utterly ethereal in floral headpieces and glittering jewels. Dressed as chic woodland nymphs, the designers behind the eclectic brand Tata Naka, identical twin sisters Tamara and Natasha Surguladze, described their creative relationship TAMARA SURGULADZE, with S*uce as nothing short of “a pleasure.” ZAYAN

Dubai’s premier gentleman’s club, The Capital Club in DIFC, opened its doors to an evening of style and sophistication to celebrate three years hosting the emirate’s movers and shakers. With a James Bond theme, members and selected guests donned 007 attire and mingled with budding Bond girls as they spied their competition in the fashion stakes. The impressive threetiered venue overflowed with delicious drink concoctions and culinary treats of banquet proportions. As dusk fell, dancing was on the agenda and after the announcement of the best-dressed couple, the competitive spirit gave way to dance floor camaraderie. The live band played a succession of hits that not even the most staunch ‘non mover’ could resist. All in all, the evening proved to be a classic affair that won’t be forgotten in a hurry.

Praise is being lavished on you at present and it’s well-deserved – the long slog is finally about to pay its dividends. There’s a difference in how you carry yourself, too, and friends will like this new streak of confidence, as you replace an easy-go-lucky attitude with just plain aptitude come Thursday 5th. There’s no telling some people, and that someone is you this month. Being stubborn, strong-willed and determined is all well and good, so long as ignoring others’ sage advice isn’t to your detriment. Thursday 19th brings about the start of a new health regime – you’d be better advised to channel your determination into that.
GEMINI (MAY 22 – JUN 21)
Nobody has all the answers, so go easy on yourself and learn how to wrap your tongue around the words ‘I don’t know’ – admitting defeat is often half the battle won. Sunday 29th sees a newborn idea grow legs and this is when the boardroom becomes your safe haven. Stop wrestling with doubt and embrace your own certainty. CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 23)
If you can’t say anything nice, it’s better to say nothing at all. What’s got your goat this month? If this saying was true, May would be a month spent in silence. Dig deep to find the source of your woes and stop attacking the world. That said, Tuesday 10th smiles in your favour and all won’t seem so lost.
the sake of family? To the ends of earth and beyond, is the answer, because nothing is as sacred as the bonds that tie you – remember that. It’s time to put your foot down on career come Tuesday 31st – any more procrastinating and you run the risk of never making that promotion.
Jabber, jabber, jabber – sometimes we can talk so much nobody actually listens. Your advice this month is to do the polar opposite, as somebody needs your bended ear. Look smart on Monday 2nd – there’s somebody you need to impress. Your clothes may do the walking, but it’s your brains that will do all the talking. LIBRA (SEPT 24 – OCT 22)

When the well is dry, it’s time to dig deeper for reserves. You may feel like you’re running on empty, but rest assured you’ve got plenty more in the tank. The going ahead may be arduous for a while, but it won’t last forever. A stranger brings a little ray of light into your life on Friday 27th.
Everyone has off days, yours just seem to be lasting longer than normal at present. To dodge the rain clouds that have been lurking, compartmentalise your issues, process them, then tick off fixing them one by one. But all is not lost – Sunday 15th serves up an opportunity almost too good to be true. SAGGITARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 23)
When did you get so good?
It’s time to hole up and focus on yourself come Monday 23rd – learn to use the word ‘no’. Spreading yourself too thin won’t benefit anyone, least of all you. Look ahead to a longer plan and see where that takes you. Brighter shores and greener pastures might be just what you’re searching for. PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20)
You’re all sweetness and light at the moment – but are you covering something up, or are these genuine emotions? Something challenges the equilibrium on Sunday 15th and reality packs a weighty punch. Talk proud towards the end of the month – you’ve got something worth saying. ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)
Hope floats, and that’s something to hold onto when the going gets too tough. A positive approach will be imperative on Tuesday 17th. Nothing beats family and friends when you need some support – learn to lean on them, otherwise you’re set to go it alone, and that’s something ill-advised when you have better options. ■ MAY 2011

DRESSING UP
I never wear too much make-up and like to play with clothes. It’s a question of balance.
BODY BEAUTIFUL I always cleanse my face well, which is very important, before applying make-up. Then I use moisturiser and sunscreen. I also eat healthy, take vitamins and try to give my skin a rest from make-up when I can.
MY STYLISH LIFE .&("/ '09
THIS IS ME I always say what’s on my mind and do what I want within boundaries. I take risks and I know who I am, which gives me a certain confidence.
IMAGES GETTY
A light foundation and, for colour, a touch of blush and lipstick. I’m a fan of ‘Eyes to Kill’ mascara, which really gives intensity to the eyes. My must is a red lip and a plain eye. I try to keep my make-up routine fresh and clean looking, but pretty. EMIRATES WOMAN
