No other watch is engineered quite like a Rolex. The Day-Date, introduced in 1956, was the first watch to display the date, as well as the day in its entirety. A powerful expression of elegance and style, its classic design quickly became a favourite among world leaders. The 36 mm Day-Date can display the day in a wide choice of languages and is presented here in Rolex-patented Everose gold.

THE EDITORʼS LETTER

L

iving in the Emirates, particularly Dubai, we are surrounded by luxury. With fast cars, five-star hotels and lavish homes de rigeur, we get all too used to this somewhat sparkly landscape. I recently had family and friends visit from around the globe who, even those who had visited before, were in awe of the way we live. The sun is always shining, streets are pristine and on a whim of any kind, can have all our wishes catered to in an instant. Last week, a friend of mine purchased a Rolls-Royce – a luxury for him. Another has just had a baby girl and now five minutes of precious sleep is a certain luxury for her. Richness, enjoyment, extravagance, whatever you want to call it, luxury means different things to different people. This month we asked some of the UAE’s most wonderful women to reveal what gives them the most satisfaction (page 90). For me, luxury is all about being comfortable. Comfortable enough to fill my home with the things I love, buy lots (and lots) of shoes, only eat organic food and be able to book a business class flight without using my air miles. Still a work in progress, as I am not completely there yet, working hard for these comforts makes attaining them all that much more rewarding.

I read your Little Miss Sunshine feature (EW, March) and was so pleased it wasn’t just about the horrors and tragedies of the child beauty pageant industry. My friend was very shy until her brave mother enrolled her in a local beauty competition. She didn’t win, but the change in her self-confidence was enormous – she became a different person and grew up to be a confident and happy woman. The greed and pushy parents of today have given these competitions a very nasty edge, but some of these young girls will still grow up to be level-headed ladies and it’s these that should be applauded. STOP THE PRESS

Honestly, who knew so much work went into creating your magazine each month? I’ve been reading Emirates Woman since arriving here six years ago, and reading A Week In The Life (EW, March), was such an eye-opener. Everybody’s jobs are busy in this current climate, but the lengths the team goes to in the name of a story or E LIFE A WEEK IN TH fashion shoot for us, the readers, is quite impressive. Thanks for all the hard work and keep it up! Jenny Davenport, Dubai

MAKE ME UP It’s been ages since a local magazine featured a good article on beauty trends and where to purchase products. Some women are more into beauty than fashion, but it’s hard to know where to source inspiration from. That said, I loved your runway feature last month (Beauty Blast)) and have it stuck to my mirror, so I now know exactly where to look – thank you. Alex Slocombe, Dubai

ALL ABOUT ME I found your feature Self-Love or Self-Loathe (EW, March) truly inspiring. I’m never one to be weighed down by self-image, but having taken a moment to think about other people’s perceptions of me, I’ve made some small adjustments. It was nice to see a feature uncovering something new, with tips on changing for the better. Marcia Romero, Abu Dhabi QTZDIPMPHZ TFMG JNBHF QTZDIPMPHZ TFMG JNBHF

The idea one has of – be it our sense of humour, oneself success at work or the crookedness of our nose – collide to give our self-esteem, with the all-important looks-based us image being a vital component selfof that, according to Martin, licensed CBT Anna psychologist and psychotherapist. But our self-image is not ruled by our physical attributes; layered into it are all the criticisms, judgements we have experienced accolades, adulation and throughout our lives internalise a lifetime of – we feedback, combine it with what we see in the mirror and produce what is often a very distorted sense of self. Our parents are often credited with making the greatest contribution to our self-image. Then as we grow up, we continuously assess and evaluate ourselves based on people’s reactions to our looks, our successes and failures, relationships and our position in society. However, some people say that events in our life directly affect how we rate ourselves, whereas others cite the that we have good self-esteem fact as being the trigger for things happening. By good projecting positivity, positivity returns to you. The comedian George Carlin famously ascribed to that school of thought when he pronounced: “Most people with low self-esteem have earned it. One thing that’s for certain is that self-image is dynamic; constantly evolving and we can chose to try to shift the emphasis from the negative to the positive; although it certainly helps if others constantly reaffirm that change, too. There is, of course, a fine line between having a good sense of self and being over-confident. Staying on the right side of that cusp will ensure realistic goals you are able to achieve, not to mention that you avoid coming across as arrogant. Self-criticism can also be the impetus needed for a change for the better. Tellingly, the American Psychological Association high self-esteem as the rated most important contributor person’s happiness; other to a attributes like power, money popularity were at the bottom end of the spectrum. or how important self-esteem Given is to our overall well-being, perhaps we should all be taking a deeply introspective, rather than glossy, look at ourselves.

BODY WORKS

Last issue’s fashion was absolutely stellar – such stunning shoots. And I loved thumbing through the catwalk guide. However, I’m a five-foot-nothing lady and sometimes can’t wear the trends, so I’d love it if you could do a ‘dress for your shape and size’ feature. Especially with summer coming up, where less clothing is more! Elisse Daumier, Dubai

amara (Tata) and Natasha (Naka) Surguladze are identical twins with a twist. Georgian-born, the girls arrived in London in 1996 to study design at the renowned Central St Martins of Art and Design, and by 2000 Barneys NYC had dedicated one of its coveted walls to the girls’ inspiring graduation collection. It wasn’t long before the line was picked up by the style team behind Sex and the City; Tata-Naka being regularly featured in the hit US TV series, not to mention the show’s obligatory official book that saw leading lady Carrie Bradshaw sporting a design by the twins. As the years have passed, the duo have been strongly supported by The British Fashion Council, which has consecutively presented Tata-Naka with the revered ‘New

The line is stocked exclusively in the Middle East by super-cute and kitsch, locallyowned UAE boutique S*uce. Elle Timms caught up with the girls when they arrived in Dubai earlier this month for a celebration to mark a decade in the business. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY, HOW DOES IT FEEL?

GBTIJPO UBUB OBLB SO, WHAT COMES NEXT? WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE IN ANOTHER 10 YEARS?

We love being a part of S*uce, it has its own unique style and identity, which complements the Tata-Naka aesthetic; and it has supported us almost since the beginning of our career. We see S*uce as part of the Tata-Naka family.

We would like to grow the business into a worldwide luxury brand, launch new lines and have our own boutiques where we can create a full on TataNaka environment, giving our clients a real taste of our style and ideas.

TALK US THROUGH THE ARCHIVE PIECES FEATURED AS PART OF THE EVENT AT S*UCE‌

The pieces are a representation of our 10-year career, and some date back the full 10 years, to our very first graduate collections. Each piece means a lot to us, for many different reasons. The prints all come from our original artwork. The pieces from the graduate collection were actually hand-painted directly onto the garments by Natasha, while the ‘stolen memories’ pieces are decorated with one-of-akind vintage pieces.

DESCRIBE THE TYPE OF WOMAN YOU DESIGN FOR?

She is adventurous and romantic, with a great sense of humour. She doesn’t feel the need to follow trends but is more than capable of creating her own unique style. TALKING FASHION, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE INDUSTRY IN DUBAI?

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST HIGHLIGHTS IN YOUR 10-YEAR CAREER?

t’s been almost 10 years since elfin Emma Watson left audiences spellbound as the bookish and bossy Hermione Granger in Harry Potter. The sixth and final installment of the saga is in the bag, and as if casting off the schoolgirl glamour for good with her new-look pixie-cut locks, Emma has effortlessly made the move from magician’s best friend to fashion designers’ must-dress muse. As the face of Lancôme and Burberry, and regularly draped in everything from Balenciaga to Chanel, Emma’s ability to dress with style and sophistication has made her hot property in fashion circles. Avoiding car-crash couture 68

and side-stepping the fashion faux-pas so many of her peers fall prey to it, Emma opts for a more classic look of understated elegance with lower hemlines and minimal make-up which allows her au naturel beauty to be statement enough. As proof that she’s not just a pretty face, Miss Watson has also been studying at Brown University in America, while rumours are abound that the actress is set to turn her hand to fashion design, with a collection of fair trade clothing in the pipeline. With such stellar credentials at the age of just 20, Emma is one to watch, both on and off the runway-cum-red carpet.

SHOPABILITY The open-plan 70,000-square-foot store is divided into sections that merge seamlessly into one another, yet are distinct enough to ease navigation. It understands the need to create a shopping ‘experience’ with two floors filled with fashion, as well as the quirkiest, most fabulously individualistic homeware and gifts. Not forgetting the seductively feminine feel with chart-friendly music, handmade signposts and silhouette design touches on the wall. While fashion here is by and large aimed at a teen market with trend-led styles at the fore, such as street and party glamour, there is enough to tempt a slightly older shopper. Smart trousers, tux jackets and pussy-bow blouses provide some great officewear basics, while the sportswear section is filled with brands including Adidas, Puma and Nike, and there’s also a plus size range, Inspire, with sizes from 18 to 26.

S

omething outrageous happened the other day; I painted my own nails. Now, to those of you who are new to the UAE or have lived outside of its endless (yet usually relatively hidden) nail salons, quick-stop mall hairdressers, and the chi-balancing abundance of five-star spa options, this do-it-yourself beauty statement probably seems more outrageous than the fact itself. If you have lived here long enough and you’re anything like me, however, you will understand completely. What can I say, I had dinner plans and red nails were absolutely necessary for my outfit, but time had simply run out; I was backed into a corner and the only option was a quick DIY fix. I’d not applied polish in so long that my hands were wobbling. My right hand in particular, applied by my unnatural left, was a total mess. Before moving to Dubai I lived in the UK, and a manicure was a treat – a preparation ritual saved solely for Christmas, New Year’s Eve and birthday celebrations. The same goes for the now-necessary blow-dries, they too fell into the ‘special occasion only’ category. Flash-forward a mere two years and how times do change. These days, my friends and I think absolutely nothing at all of fortnightly mani/pedis, weekly polish changes and perhaps the odd – cough – shoulder massage while we’re sitting in that comfy chair (thanks www.tipsntoeshaven.com). This is before we even get started on the obligatory hair salon appointments – I dread to think how much I’ve racked up at JetSet in Grosvenor House, and then there’s the fluttering eyelash extensions, teeth whitening sessions, eyebrow threading, and the continual scrubbing, waxing and tanning required as the season of being continually beach-ready gets into full swing. And before you know it, the entire process begins again; if it’s not unwanted hair removal, it’s the nails that need attention, and so on. Quite frankly, it’s exhausting, and in my defense, it’s all Dubai’s fault.

We’re living in a place where we don’t have to lift a finger, and the convenience factor here is provided across all levels, not just to facilitate beauty needs. Take, for example, a simple petrol station stop I made with my visiting mum sitting in the passenger seat last week. The pump assistants were chatting, and there was a small queue forming. We weren’t in a rush, yet “Oh, come ON!” I heard myself impatiently exclaim, which was met with a slow look of distaste from her that simply said, “You’ve changed.” But back to the matter in hand (pardon the pun), and I’m in luck this month

when it comes to aiding the manicure addiction. One of Dubai’s most-loved nail chains, N.Bar, has launched a revolutionary system called Gelish, using polish that applies smoothly as an enamel, and lasts like gel overlays, leaving a high-gloss finish for a staggering three weeks. Check out www.thegroomingco. com/nbar for more information. Trust me, if you do the maths, it’s a chiconomic manicure worth every fil of its Dhs140, and I can declare myself a convert. I figure that a visit to the salon every third week really isn’t so bad, I might even throw in a facial next time, too... ■ APRIL 2011

GET THE LOOK “This style will take a team effort and some pretty deft finger work – you probably attempted to make a basket or hat by weaving with long grass when you were a kid and this is similar. It may be a bit too intricate and detailed to attempt on yourself, but you can achieve a similar look using plaits and fishtail braids. Hair-pieces and wefts are used to create the contrasting colour, but you could also use ribbon.“ For the back: pull back half of your hair

into a ponytail, separate the hair into two, three or four plaits and/or fishtail braids (incorporate a hair piece or ribbon). Wrap around each

other to create a bun and secure with pins. For the front: using a centre parting, plait or fishtail braid (incorporate a hair piece or ribbon) down each side. For the adventurous create three

smaller plaits and wrap them around each other and secure. Mess the edges by gently pulling loose strands to create a messed up effect. Ali Murphy, stylist at Salon Ink

Models at the Alexander McQueen S/S11 runway show rocked basket-weave braids, intricately created by stylist Guido Palau. Their hair was divided into three sections before being laced over extensions and under natural strands for a woven effect, with each panel ending in a skinny braid. Back panels were folded flat against the head and pinned in place before being misted with hairspray. Many permutations of the technique have made their way onto the new season catwalks with clip-in extensions used to add length and to create that coveted two-tone effect.

I

t takes a certain something to be able to stop a crowded hotel lobby in its tracks, but Cate Blanchett does it with ease and not a bit of arrogance. Luminous, striking and stunning, when Cate enters a room it is easy to see that this Academy Award-winning actress has a star quality that transcends time. Dressed in a day suit and fresh off A plane from Singapore, I met the revered Cate in Geneva to celebrate a photographic collaboration she had taken part in with famed watch brand IWC Schaffhausen and shot by Peter Lindbergh. This recent project sees Cate recreating scenes from old Hollywood in Portofino with a star-studded line-up including Kevin Spacey, Matthew Fox and fellow Australian Elle Macpherson. Her relationship with IWC Schaffhausen began around four years ago when she met the company’s CEO, Georges Kern, at the launch of her movie, The Aviator. “We met in LA and just got on really well and I was fascinated by his passion for timepieces,” smiled Cate. “I have a friend who collects watches, he’s got one of those cabinets in which they all move and I just didn’t get it. But when I met Georges and began talking to him, well, he’s infectious. It’s a whole different, meticulous universe. The level of skill and ingenuity that goes into what he does – I really admire him.” Fellow Academy Award-winner Kevin Spacey was Cate’s mysterious companion in the shoot, and as old friends and colleagues she was happy to catch up with him. “Kevin and I worked together ages ago and we talk a lot. With him running the Old Vic in London and Andrew, my partner, running the Sydney Theatre Company, it was nice to hang out in Portofino and catch up for a few days. And also with Peter Lindbergh who I have shot with a few times – he is amazing. It was also so wonderful to have Elle there, and with Jean Reno and the other wonderful actors present, being in Portofino was absolute bliss – it’s been a

fascinating journey with IWC Schaffhausen.” Cate’s recent photo shoot with Peter Lindbergh was just the latest in a long list of shoots she’s taken part in throughout her career. A seasoned model, Cate has appeared in hundreds of fashion shoots and graced countless covers, including Vogue, Vanity Fair and W magazines. But Cate admits she still finds it difficult to see the images of herself post-shoot. “The whole thing about recording yourself is just de rigueur,” says Cate. “When you immerse yourself completely in another reality, which you do on stage and film, you have to give over a sense of the outcome, so I don’t think about the outcomes. You do get used to it, it’s part of your job. I have had the great good fortune to be photographed by Richard Avedon before he died, Irving Penn, Annie Leibovitz, Bruce Weber and Peter Lindberg, and when you work with those great photographers you realise that you are part of an image they are creating. That’s something I understand. You mesh yourself into something bigger than just trying to look attractive. When you’re only dealing with the surface of something, I get a little bit uncomfortable. It’s a very different experience.” Her face is flawless and can be transformed to accommodate any character, be it Queen Elizabeth I, Katharine Hepburn or royal Lord of the Rings elf, Galadriel. In fact, in altering her appearance in the name of her craft, she has become one of the biggest stars on stage and screen today. Also famous for being one of the most beautiful faces in Hollywood, interestingly Cate doesn’t see herself that way at all and laughs at the very suggestion: “Oh no… maybe by the blind and infirm! It took me a long time to feel comfortable in front of the camera. You know there is a reason why a lot of indigenous cultures feel that they don’t want to be photographed, because it robs their soul. If you work with a really great photographer they are not looking at the surface, they are seeing through you and I think that’s something I hid from for quite a long time. I think it’s very different if you have grown up being a great beauty, but that was never my calling card. I think the world of beauty

“IF FASHION’S GOING TO CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD, IT HAS TO TAKE RISKS. THOUGH I DO KEEP AN EYE ON FASHION AND ON WHAT DESIGNERS ARE DOING” is cliché, but it’s subjective.” Never getting it wrong on the red carpet, Cate is about as gracious as it gets when it comes to her style icon status. Easily the best dressed at this year’s Oscars and counting the world’s most fashionable designers amongst her friends, Cate prefers to dress herself and go sans stylist for her red carpet events. “Too bad for them [the media] if they don’t like it!” she states. “If fashion’s going to continue to move forward, it has to take risks. Though I do keep an eye on fashion and on what designers are doing.” Unlike other actresses of her time, Cate doesn’t care for the paparazzi and having been at the forefront of her industry for nearly two decades, she still makes a conscious effort to keep her private life exactly that. “I don’t hand my personal life up on a platter and I’m fine if people think it’s dull,” says Cate. “But you know, certainly at home [in Australia] there seems to be a respectful distance kept and I appreciate that. But I’m also out there doing things, I’m either with the kids, at the theatre company or, you know, in Portofino! There is stuff to be done!” Cate moved to Australia with her partner Andrew Upton and their three boys and is currently the co-CEO and Creative Director of the Sydney Theatre Company, alongside Andrew. “We moved back to Australia for family reasons and also because of the job offer, as obviously we can’t run the company living anywhere else. It is really important that artists run the company. It allows the artists to be financially responsible, not just creatively responsible. And I think it breaks down that barrier, that myth that artists can’t deal with money. I’m not willing to compromise and I think again that’s a generational thing.” Working as a theatre actress and film star, Cate doesn’t have a preference for stage or screen, stating that they are so very different and the challenges are incomparable. “I wouldn’t want to work exclusively in either,” says Cate “It’s been great doing a lot of theatre as it’s more difficult filming on location with the children and being away for

long periods of time. It also really depends on the role. I think a lot of times [in film] people don’t know how to rehearse. It makes a big difference and the pleasure is completely different. Often the experience of making a film is quite different than the outcome. For example, in spite of adoring both David Fincher and Brad [Pitt], making Benjamin Button was excruciating, just because of the hours and make-up – yet the outcome is fabulous. So the experience doesn’t always translate, because if you have a miserable time it can still be a great film and if you have a great time it doesn’t mean it will be a great film. “Another film that actually hardly anyone saw but the experience of shooting was extraordinary was The Missing, a western I made with Ron Howard and Tommy Lee Jones. It was in Santa Fe and I had never been down there before. There, in the snow, I went out riding every day and I just loved it. Andrew and I’s first child, Dash, learnt to walk there, so there were many milestones,” Cate adds. She also talks fondly about filming her latest movie, Hanna, which is due for release this month. In it she is again transformed, this time into redheaded CIA agent Marissa Wiggler who’s on the hunt for a girl named Hanna. In the movie Cate plays alongside another Australian silver screen veteran, Eric Bana. She says: “I loved filming Hanna in Berlin last year, and it also corresponded with a couple of theatre companies I really wanted to work with.” Having mastered so many roles and characters in her awardwinning career, is there anything Cate wouldn’t do for the sake of her art? “I do like crazy requests. It’s always those unexpected things that I’m drawn to,” she says. “Like where did that suggestion come from? Or, why I hadn’t thought of doing that! And that’s part of it, the love of my craft, as I do love being directed. Because then you feel like you’re in collaboration with someone and not in your hotel room creating something on your own, which doesn’t interest me so much. But I do think you can never say never.” And with a huge smile on her fascinating face, Cate reveals the one hurdle left in her golden acting career: “I haven’t been shot in a bikini. Nobody will film me in a bikini, I keep trying and they just won’t come!”

MARIA DOWLATSHAHI

OWNER AND DESIGNER OF FUSION JEWELLERY LINE AT S*UCE LUXURY IS… HOSTING FRIENDS AND FAMILY The hostess with the mostest is the only way to describe the eternally glamorous Maria Dowlatshahi. Dubai’s very own domestic goddess, with Nigella’s sexiness (and knack with an oven) and Martha Stewart’s party-throwing expertise distilled into one, Maria picks her extended family as her ideal dinner party guests, and especially adores entertaining her parents. “They all live in different parts of the world and it’s very special for me to have them all together in Dubai at the same time. My family would be my dream dinner party guests. Being surrounded by them is very emotional for me and they are my most special memories.” However, Maria does not delegate kitchen duties to others and prefers a more hands on approach. “My family’s favourite home-cooked dish is a special Iranian recipe, coquelet roasted with saffron and lemon polou (rice). The flavour is always astounding, the meat moist and bursting with zest, with the rice crispy and rounded almost like a cake. I also serve up a delicious ratatouille and a moreish, rich chocolate cake.” Other little touches include six small bouquets of roses (which she picks up from Art & Flowers, Choithram’s or Spinneys), that she arranges in crystal vases alongside Swarovski candles, to match her plate settings. “My favourite plates are from Christian Lacroix as they burst with colour; each plate is a different shade, from yellow to green to purple. Christofle cutlery and crockery completes the setting.” Her top tip for hosting the perfect party? “Enjoy yourself; from setting the table to cooking your meal, as that joy will permeate and uplift your guests.”

AMELIE TEISSIER

JEWELLERY PRODUCT MANAGER LUXURY IS… DESIGNER SHOES AND BAGS Amelie Teissier’s luxury credentials are stellar; alongside her innate sense of quintessential French style, her CV glitters with big-name jewellers (including De Beers). Yet glitz is not the way to this style siren’s heart. A modern-day Carrie Bradshaw, Amelie is most tempted by covetable, statement handbags and her Achilles heel is vertigous stilettos. Her indulgence for this spring? The ultra-classic, personalised Louis Vuitton ‘Neverfull’. Fashionistas have been tripping over their Choos in their quest to get their hands on these personalised pieces, and Amelie has bagged one. “I chose fuchsia and cream – I was literally dying for it.” She also sports the big Balenciaga weekender for work. “I also have three Chanel evening bags; in black, white and brown – they go with everything.” Of her other great love, shoes, she says: “I love Louboutin, Choo, Dior and Chloé. I was dying for the Sergio Rossi low boots in red and have been looking for them everywhere. I get quite dogmatic when I really want something and end up calling worldwide or trying Google or eBay desperate to locate them.” But where does Amelie get her inside track on what what’s hot? “French magazines are my addiction; I adore French Elle, Vogue and L’Officiel. In the UAE Harvey Nichols also has a great shoe and bag department.” Clothes are not so much of a passion, but she opts for Mage and Sandro at Galleries Lafayette as fail-safe sartorial bets. It also helps to have a best friend as head of buying at Paris’ Printemps. Not frivolous with her investments, Amelie religiously stores her beautiful shoes and bags in their original boxes for protection. And her favourite place to purchase? Paris, bien sur! 94

REKHA TOURANI SOCIALITE

LUXURY IS… PEACE OF MIND Socialite extraordinaire, Rekha Tourani, seems to be cocooned in luxury. Yet despite having a walk-in closet to rival the Vogue fashion department, and an enviable figure to show it off, Rekha’s luxury of choice is tellingly introspective. “What could be better than having peace of mind?” she asks. “Having worked hard all my life, I finally feel that I am at peace with myself.” She likens it to achieving a calm, spiritual state. “I have always known what I wanted out of life and ensuring I attained it was a long, arduous journey, but I can honestly say that I haven’t any desires or wants left to strive towards.” What gives her this satisfaction? “I have a husband, Mahesh, who loves me. I have two fabulous sons who are making a life of their own, who are happy, independent and successful. It is my close-knit family, who will do anything for each other, that gives me this serenity – that is my greatest achievement.” Despite having gained many column inches for her stunning new home, she is refreshingly modest. “I am lucky enough to have a beautiful, peaceful home to grow old in – a real sanctuary, and fabulous friends that support me constantly. But the bottom line is that my family is well settled.” Rekha’s inner serenity is something that every one of us yearns for, while retaining a sense of calm is her very special secret, and ultimate luxury.

perfect pick-me-up in Dubai? A spa day chilling out at the Presidential Suite at the pampering Raffles, or the chic Amara Spa at the Park Hyatt. “Their outdoor rain showers are fantastic!” she says. Further afield, she waxes lyrical about the exotic East: “The Bulgari spa in Bali epitomises luxury. Its location is breathtaking; overlooking the crashing ocean below, perched atop a dramatic cliff.” Her treatment of choice to ease away the stress? A hot stone massage. This socialista cannot spa alone, however; alongside friends, she chooses her partner at C’est Moi, Muskan Ta urani, as her prime pampering companion so that they can have time out and an escape from their hectic schedules. prah Winfrey calls her “One of the smartest women I know”, and with her PhD from Harvard, best-selling books and three children, it would be easy to view Martha Beck as one of those ‘has it all’ American mummy gurus dead-set on showing us why she’s best friends with the mighty Ms Winfrey, and why we’re slogging it out at a nine-to-five job and best friends with our sofa. However, a brief read through Martha’s resume reveals that the 48-year-old certainly didn’t pull herself up into her enviable position in life via golden thread bootstraps. A divorced, once bordering-on-bankrupt, mother-of-three – whose second child Adam has Down Syndrome – Martha’s earned a deserved reputation in the US as a straight-talking therapist and life coach, whose philosophy for leading a more fulfilling life can be broken down into her four bite-size principles of Peace, Purpose, Power and Practice. A dedicated believer in creating your own path to personal enrichment and enlightenment, Martha also advocates the importance of acting on what you discover about yourself.

“If I act on [my epiphanies], I know from experience they’ll sink deeper into my consciousness, until they’re intrinsic parts of my world view,” she says. “Then new epiphanies will occur to me… that’s the way everyone’s destiny unfolds.” And it’s a ‘practice makes perfect’ approach that’s echoed by UAE-based life coach and author Sahar Moussly, who stresses to her clients the importance of repeated affirmations and the continual need to question oneself so that life’s purposes reveal themselves. “I ask my clients to partake in affirmation exercises to help them to discover their life’s purpose,” says Sahar. “Positive affirmations on a daily basis can help people to tackle and come to terms with what are perhaps wrong beliefs about themselves that they may have had instilled as children. Once people become more satisfied with who they are, they find peace.” Summing up her philosophy of peace and fulfillment as “add nothing, just subtract what isn’t working,” Martha’s four Ps – a blend of Eastern beliefs, core values and good old-fashioned gut instinct – are proving the perfect melting pot of guidelines for anyone in need of a spot of enlightenment…

“I ASK MY CLIENTS TO PARTAKE IN AFFIRMATION EXERCISES TO HELP THEM TO DISCOVER THEIR LIFE’S PURPOSE. ONCE PEOPLE BECOME MORE SATISFIED WITH WHO THEY ARE, THEY FIND PEACE”

From John Lennon’s exhortations of giving it a chance to its intrinsic entrenchment in leading philosophical PEACE and religious movements, the concept of bringing peace into your life is a comforting notion in a world that is, in Martha’s words, ‘becoming more bewildering, unsettling, and unsure.’ Separating it from the notion of ‘peace and quiet’ and placing it in the arena of ‘inner peace’ – the sort of calm you can find within yourself, even if you’re sat in a traffic jam on the hottest day of the year with a broken air con and the kids wailing in the back seat – and working towards achieving peace is one of Martha’s 102

key principles, which sits nicely alongside one of her favourite rhetorical questions – Why worry? “These two words, considered sincerely, can radically reconfigure the landscape of your mind,” says Martha. “Worry rarely leads to positive action; it’s just painful, useless fear about hypothetical events, which scuttles happiness rather than ensuring it.” Identifying the triggers that divert us away from our pursuit of peace – fear, anxiety, insecurity – is the first lesson peace-seekers are encouraged to learn, along with reacquainting themselves with that ancient premise of gut instinct. Martha’s favourite quote is ‘when you trust yourself, you will know how to live’.

“HAVING ALONE TIME MAKES YOU ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT YOURSELF TO WHICH YOU CAN THEN BEGIN TO FIND ANSWERS. BEING A SELF-HEALER IN THIS WAY IS A POWERFUL TOOL FOR SELF-DISCOVERY”

Martha is big on questions. More specifically, she is big on the questions you ask yourself to find POWER your life’s purpose. “At first I thought asking yourself ‘what should you be asking yourself ’ was redundant. It isn’t,” she insists. “Without this question, you wouldn’t ask any others, so it gets top billing. It creates an alert, thoughtful mind state, ideal for ferreting out the information you most need in every situation. Ask it frequently.” Martha acknowledges that purposes differ from individual to individual, whether you’re here to create worldwide prosperity, a beautiful family, or, as she puts it, one really excellent bagel. While a second step is in discovering your purpose and to consider the achievements you would like to be known for. Sahar agrees: “To start with, I ask my clients, ‘What are you aiming to achieve’? I ask so many questions and 70 per cent of the answers come from the clients themselves.” And self-questioning is a vital proponent of discovering your purpose. Martha adds:“How do I want the world to be different because I lived in it? Keep asking this question. Eventually you’ll glimpse clearer outlines of your destiny. Live by design, not by accident.”

For Martha and Sahar, power isn’t about wielding it over others. Rather, Martha’s power principle is based around letting go of the things that PURPOSE are stopping you from reaching your potential; and in the process facing up to your mistakes. “Where am I going wrong? This might well be the most powerful question,” says Martha. “Your ego wants you to avoid noticing where you may have bad information or unworkable ideas. But you’ll gain far more capability and respect by asking where you’re wrong than by insisting you’re right.” And power can also be attained in spending ‘alone time’, according to Sahar, who sets her clients the task of spending 20 minutes alone writing down thoughts, ideas and passions. “Having alone time makes you ask questions about yourself to which you can then begin to find answers. Being a self-healer in

104

EMIRATES WOMAN

APRIL 2011

this way is a powerful tool for self-discovery,” she says. And while you are working on harnessing your own power to enrich your life through banishing fear, Martha advocates relinquishing control. “How can I keep myself absolutely safe? You can’t. Life is inherently uncertain,” she straight shoots. “The way to cope with that reality is not to control it… but to develop courage.”

The concept of ‘practice’ was given a shot in the arm recently thanks to US professor Chua’s much-debated book Battle PRACTICE Amy Hymn of the Tiger Mother, in which she discussed the differences between perfection-expecting Chinese mothers and their ‘permissive’ Western counterparts, insisting, “My Western friends who consider themselves strict make their children practice their musical instruments for 30 minutes every day. An hour at most. For a Chinese mother, the first hour is the easy part. It’s hours two and three that get tough.” And Martha also believes that fulfillment requires total dedication to a pursuit you enjoy. “Some psychologists believe that no one is born with any particular talent and that all skill is gained through practice,” she says. “Studies have shown that masters are simply people who’ve practiced a skill intensely for 10,000 hours or more. That requires loving – not liking – what you do. If you want to excel, do something you’re passionate enough to practice.”

GBTIJPO TXJNXFBS PRE-HOLIDAY BEACH-READY BEAUTY TIPS?

A good exfoliation, or a Moroccan Hammam, is the best way to prepare your skin for the perfect tan. Although I find that losing any extra weight is the best way to boost your confidence on the beach, as confidence is the best look to have on a holiday. YOUR PERSONAL HOLIDAY STYLE IS…

I am not the type to sit and relax. I am always on the go and plan activities for the whole day through to the night. I love people and thoroughly enjoy taking vacations with my friends; my motto on holiday is ‘the more, the merrier’. FAVOURITE PLACES TO TRAVEL?

AUTY E B I N I K S I B AYEB,PRAIA OR DINA GH

I would be lying if I said anywhere other than Brazil. It has a certain charm that no other country has, and the kindness and friendliness of its people make it the best place in the world.

M

eaning ‘beaches’ in Portuguese, the fun, ultra-exotic and Brazilianinspired colour splashed designs at local boutique Praias are an eyecatcher for shoppers in Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates. Since it’s launch four years ago with business partner Simoni Santamarina, Dina has supplied the store with a creatively fabulous selection of beachwear, whatever the season. And who does a bikini better than the Brazilians?

DESCRIBE THE PRAIAS WOMAN…

We buy for all types of women. That is the beauty of Praias. There really is a swimsuit for every woman in our collection, from young and on trend, to chic and elegant. The common denominator across our range is definitely the Brazilian zest in each and every piece. Our swimsuits bring a piece of Brazilian soul to everybody they dress. BEST WAY TO ACCESSORISE A BIKINI?

Add a nice pareo or kaftan in a striking colour, ensuring that it brings out the colours in your bikini, of course. Oh, and nice slip-ons to show-off perfectly manicured feet. THREE BEACH ESSENTIALS?

A nice bikini, good sunscreen and an iPod full of good music are the only way to enjoy the beach. PRAIAS IS LOCATED AT MALL OF THE EMIRATES, DUBAI, (04) 3411167 150

DINA’S BIKINI BODY GUIDE CURVY: “A simple bikini without too much fuss is always good on a curvy body. I would suggest a solid, block-colour bikini, which keeps the attention focused evenly. In fact, sometimes a smaller style is actually more flattering.” PEAR-SHAPED: “As always, no matter what your particular body shape may be, the key to flattering is accentuating your

positive characteristics. Choose one with an eyecatching top, in a pattern or bright colour, and a bottom that’s darker. A well-padded top can also help balance a pear-shaped body.” BOYISH: “To accentuate curves on a boyish shape, look for high cut legs and a low, curve-enhancing neckline. Try to find something that

gathers around the neckline; these gathers will make flat chests seem fuller. Avoid dark-coloured, tankstyle swimsuits that draw attention away from the shape of the body.” ATHLETIC: “As with a boyish shape, I would definitely stay away from dark colours, as for the cut, a bandeau type bikini with a nice bottom that has a small back is good, as small appears more feminine.”

An oversized hat is always chic and makes a statement. BEST TREASURED HOLIDAY MEMORY?

It’s not actually a hot vacation, but at 16 I took a trip to Paris with my Mum – we sipped on hot chocolate in a chic café and went shopping in glamorous boutiques, visiting the Louvre Museum and strutting along the ChampsÉlysées. It was a bonding experience. FAVOURITE DESTINATION?

I love the beach; when I was child we used to spend months in the South of France, and now I like to explore new places, especially exotic islands and places that have a bit of flair.

ubai-based label Reina was created by Rana Al Naqeeb when she was a mere 17 years old. After studying fashion in London, before moving to the USA and getting a BA in finance, Rana combined her skills and set about launching her label. Fresh and affordable, and with a presence in America after the likes of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Mischa Barton were spotted sporting her designs, Reina is fast becoming the go-to brand for Hollywood beach glamour

TELL US ABOUT YOUR INSPIRATION…

HOW DID YOU COME TO DESIGN SWIMWEAR?

I personally love swimwear, and like to shop around to find the latest trends and cuts that fit my body type, and my love for the beach. Business-wise, it’s a niche market that is in demand, especially in this region, and there were few great swimwear brands around in the fashion industry when I started out. Ours are feminine styles with simple, chic pieces.

It varies; inspiration is endless, as it can be triggered by places I have travelled to and colours of flowers, to cuts I see on the fashion runways. There is no specific thing that inspires my designs, and that’s the beauty of creativity behind swimwear; it’s not defined. BEACH-READY BEAUTY TIPS?

Exfoliate to get an even and glowing tan,

RANA’S ONE-PIECE BODY GUIDE CURVY: “Choose a side cut-out to show off your waist and a V-shaped neckline. I think a curvy body can get away with any colour, so long as it suits the skin tone. If your midsection is fuller, opt for a ruched bikini with a rolled neckline, or go for a one-piece with a tummy control panel.

Another option is a wrap-front one piece. If you are blessed with a full bosom, opt for a suit with underwire to give support, and stick to solid colours. PEAR-SHAPED: “Look for a suit with padded tops, and preferably a halter neck, as these will add volume to the bust

area, and balance a wider bottom. A suit with a mixture combing a patterned top half and a solid bottom will add balance, too.” BOYISH: “Ruffles and ties will add an overall feminine style, which will soften a boyish figure on the beach. Also keep it at least two-toned, especially when it

comes to patterns.” ATHLETIC: “Definitely choose a cut-out one-piece, avoiding halter neck styles as to not emphasise an already strong shoulder area. Also try to stick to darker toned colours. A twist-front midsection will help create an hourglass figure.”

efore launching her first collection, Melissa Odabash lived and modelled in Italy. Having worn more than her fair share of over-designed bikinis, she thought, “I can do better than this.” And so she did. “The stuff I had to wear was hideous,” Melissa explains. “I was modelling suits that were sparkly and tacky and I just had enough…” After making her first collection by hand (it’s her trademark to use fine twisted elastic discreetly sewn into linings instead of underwire and padding) she took them around the boutiques of Milan, starting a beachwear business that would soon see her own name brand grow into one of the most successful names in swimwear

TELL US ABOUT YOUR COLLECTION…

My collection is very much inspired by vintage prints, and 60s style cut bikinis. I love animal prints – they are part of my trademark, and they never go out of fashion, always looking great on every skin type. And, of course, my collection comes with matching cover-ups and hats that will give a woman the entire vacation look, right through to après beach.

TO ACCESSORISE A BEACH KAFTAN, WEAR WITH…

A hat, sunglasses, flat shoes and minimal jewellery – I especially like a long, thin gold chain necklace. HOW DO YOU PAMPER PRE-HOLIDAY?

I love getting a full body exfoliation, followed by a massage, which also helps tone the skin. Everyone

should do this a few times before they hit the beach, as it also helps keep water retention away from the legs. I usually have a spray tan from Vita Liberata (www.vitaliberata.com) pre-vacation, and I love SPFs that contain glitter, as they make your body look more toned. YOUR PERSONAL HOLIDAY STYLE IS…

I love my skimpy bikinis! I always wear one of my hats, as I don’t take a lot of sun, and when it comes to cover-ups I love white; it goes with whatever I wear underneath. I’m 5ft 10in and I always wear flat metallic sandals. However, it depends on where I am holidaying; in the States I wear short kaftans and in St Tropez or Sardinia I go for the long, animal print silk ones. NUMBER ONE DESTINATION?

Italy – I love every holiday I’ve ever taken there, the language, the food and the people. ■ TURN OVER FOR THE ULTIMATE SWIMWEAR SHOPPING GUIDE...

girls can wear just about anything in terms of cover-ups, so I would suggest something more fitted around the waist to show off an hourglass body. A maxi-dress always works well, too.” PEAR-SHAPED: “Look for a cover-up with more

detailing on the top to draw attention away from the hips; beading detail with cut-out shoulders will draw more attention to the top half.” BOYISH: “I would say choose something very feminine and floaty, nothing too tight. I have a style called Coleen that

is great for this body type, it’s a loose kaftan style maxi-dress.” ATHLETIC: “Again, I would look for something not too tight as this body shape usually has broad shoulders, so go for something shorter, too.”

ancy a touch of free-spirited chic, effortlessly blending fine Parisian style with New York cool? Catherine Malandrino, the native Frenchwoman who now calls Manhattan – where she shows her label each season – home, says her new collection was inspired by the works of ceramist Roger Capon, which she saw whilst on holiday in the South of France. This month, EW has two fabulous Dhs5,000 vouchers to spend at the region’s flagship Catherine Malandrino store in The Dubai Mall, where the collection of crackled and woven leather meets washed linen in soft ceramic tones of terracotta and clay, and sheer cotton gauze in loose, natural silhouettes.

ingerie should fit like a second skin. You should forget that you are wearing it. However, if you’re forever battling with unsightly strap marks or readjusting stiff underwire, then perhaps an underwear overhaul should be on the cards. “None of the ladies who come into the store know their correct size,” states Irina Litkova, and with seven years of experience at Agent Provocateur under her belt, this underwear-stalwart knows all there is to know about what lies beneath. “People tend to buy a smaller sized band round the back, but then they wonder why the straps are always biting into their skin, constricting their rib-cage and fitting so uncomfortably. They always opt for the wrong size.” Our perception of size, unfortunately, doesn’t always match up with fact. Irina’s top tip is to try every single item on. Each garment fits differently so you won’t have a standard size across the range, let alone from store to store, which is why Agent Provocateur doesn’t measure and give their clients definitive sizing. Irina insists that a few minutes spent in the dressing room will result in a splurge that leaves you with something covetable, rather than just plain uncomfortable. We’ve all gleefully pointed fingers at celebrities sashaying along red carpets with ill-fitting undies that create the dreaded bra ‘spill-over’ and rather than accentuating and supporting curves, they merely

create a paparazzi frenzy for all the wrong reasons. Never forget that underwear is as important as what goes over it; for special occasions, make sure you try on the underwear along with the dress well in advance and avoid any last minute panics. Put simply, the underwear you choose shouldn’t detract from the showstopper you’ve secured, but should merely enhance the overall ensemble. So whether you’re looking to enhance, minimise, show-off or support your bust, the right fit is crucial. Tans don’t necessarily mean that you will immediately glow and shimmer. In fact, some of the best tans come from products that are matte and actually meant for men. You could call them ‘working bronzers’, as they are great for the day, especially the office, and for events where you need everything to stay put, as they offer real longevity and set your base and concealer. Plus, they are wonderful for those with oily tendencies or T-zones. Try EstĂŠe Lauder’s Bronze Goddess Soft Matte bronzer, as it not only provides a great even tan without too much shimmer, it doesn’t feel drying on the skin either. And for an almost undetectable tan try Jean Paul Gaultier’s Monsieur Powder Bronzer or Guerlain’s Terracotta for Men Bronzing Powder – both are designed for males but work equally well on our fair faces, too. For the easiest application, imagine the number three and draw it from your forehead, over the cheekbone and along the jaw line, finish with a little down the centre of your nose.

A tan doesn’t start and end at the cheeks. Your glow factor can be upped by using a bronze-hued eyeshadow and lipstick or lipgloss. The great thing is you can apply your regular face bronzer just under the brow bone and over the eyelid to add depth and definition. And, when it comes to eyes, a really fabulous edition can be a golden shimmer swept over the centre of the lid and just on the tear ducts to make eyes appear luminous, and, amazingly, larger, too. As for lips – it’s about finding the perfect shade for you. If you like to wear cooler tones like icy blues, then pick a champagne or a pink beige, if you suit warmer colours then opt for a brown/orange-based beige. The best suit-everyone product is Bobbi Brown’s Sparkly Lip Gloss, as it comes in three different golden/nude shades.

Glowing hair can create a beautiful halo effect and lift any existing highlights, plus it works on the entire hair colour spectrum from darks to blondes. If you are going for a slicked back look, then use a shimmery gel like Goldwell DualSenses Sun Reflects Leave-In Protect Shimmer Gel; it holds fly-aways in place and offers an intense shine. For party nights, a golden shimmer courtesy of Alterna’s Glitterati Sparkling Shimmer Spray gives instant luminosity. Spray onto the crown of your hair and into partings. Oh, and always before you get dressed or else your favourite LBD will be covered with glitter particles, too. APRIL 2011

Bronzed limbs are the epitome of health, and it goes without saying you must opt for ersatz rather than actual rays. Wash-off bronzers are a brilliant and convenient option and especially good are the versions of ‘tan-in-a-can’ products. One of the biggest selling bronzer products Stateside is Sally Hansen’s Airbrush Legs, which covers like a mini foundation, doesn’t transfer onto clothes and gives a realistic tan hue. If you do need a little extra glow over the top, then you can’t beat NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Golden Shimmer, both for its subtle sheen and beautiful summery fragrance. â–

So next time you skip exertion in the gym for an excursion to the beach, don’t feel too bad; sunshine, when carefully enjoyed, is essential for your health, too.

FACTOR IT IN There are two types of harmful rays requiring our attention: UVA and UVB. The latter relates to the SPF labeling system in which the factor indicates the amount of radiation required to cause sunburn with sun cream on, relative to without; so if your skin were to burn in the space of 10 minutes a factor 15 could, in theory, protect you for 150 minutes. However, logic dictates that the cream doesn’t work at full capacity for X number of minutes and then suddenly just shut down. In reality, an SPF15 is screening 93 per cent of the sun’s harmful rays, whereas SPF30 screens 97 per cent, and SPF2 a measly 50 per cent.

e all know the aesthetic benefits of a little mild sun exposure: a gently tanned face arguably looks healthier, may well be less prone to break-outs, and will certainly make teeth look whiter. But there is far more going on if you dig a little deeper. Our principal source of vitamin D is through synthesis in the skin, which occurs with exposure to sunlight. Wellknown as a necessary component for bone growth, in recent years studies have also suggested that vitamin D could play a key role in the fight against cancer, heart disease, TB, and even multiple sclerosis. On a psychological level we should thank our lucky stars, too. With guaranteed sunshine we’re more likely to use the medical term ‘seasonal affective disorder’ to describe a high-summer airconditioner aided incarceration, than sunshine-starved depression.

Dermatologist Dr Nick Lowe recommends a minimum SPF30 plus UVA for exposure to direct sunlight. But suggests SPF15 plus UVA can be sufficient for dark and olive skin. Apply sunscreen 10 minutes before exposure to allow for absorption, and reapply throughout the day (particularly after swimming or exercise). As a rule of thumb use a handful of cream to cover the whole body on each application. Dr Nick Lowe recommends: Ambre Solaire Sun Screen, SPF30 with UVA Nivea Sun Spray SPF30 with UVA Piz Buin SPF 0 with UVA L’OrÊal Solaire Expertise Spray SPF30 with UVA

It’s well worth knowing that make-up and moisturisers with significant SPF ratings may not offer sufficient, or even any, UVA protection. Just as you ask your sun cream to go the extra mile, make sure you keep a beady eye out for UVA filters in your facial products, too. LET’S GET PHYSICAL

BACK IT UP

What actually stops the sun’s rays from harming your skin? There are two answers: chemical and physical. According to a study at the University of California “Chemical sunblocks work by absorbing the energy of the UV radiation before it affects your skin. Physical sunblocks reflect or scatter UV radiation before it reaches your skin. Physical sunblocks provide broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection, are gentle enough for everyday use and rarely cause skin irritation. On application they can appear thick and white – avoid this by patting on rather than vigorously rubbing. Most chemical blocks only work against a narrow region of the UV spectrum; so several different chemicals are usually combined to provide broad protection. Only a few can block UVA rays at all, and many of these have been banned due to concerns that they may cause cancer. As a result, most broad-spectrum creams combine both chemical and physical blocks.

UV radiation is one of the major creators of free radicals, which age our skin. Products packed with anti-oxidants aim to counter these effects by ‘neutralising’ the free radicals. Vitamin C is a powerful anti-oxidant, and applied in a concentrated serum can boost your sun care routine by helping skin repair itself after exposure. Try SkinCeuticals Serum 10 with 10 per cent pure vitamin C or La Roche Posay Derm AOX Intensive Serum. Another great product is Nimue Vitamin C Spray found at Aesthetica Clinic, JW Marriott, Deira or Dubai Healthcare City.

POP A PILL The world of ingestible tanning products is split neatly in two: those that dye your skin, containing carotenoids (the colour pigment in carrots), and those that aim to boost your body’s production of melanin, the naturally occurring pigment which causes a tan. The second is based on the amino acid tyrosine, which is an essential ingredient in the

By changing colour from purple to pink and then yellow, you know when to reapply, and then when to get out of the sun. (www.uvsunsense.com) If you were under the impression that simpy covering up was protection enough, think again. UV rays can shine right through fabrics and a wet white T-shirt may only provide SPF3 according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. A whole host of companies offer SPF protection rash vests perfect for kiddies, but for a more fashionable option try Coolibar’s crisp white beach shirt (www.coolibar.com). or the past three years Givaudan perfumer Olivier Pescheux has been on a quest to capture the scent of the perfume house where the story of Diptyque began. As the story goes, in 1961 three friends (Christiane Gautrot, interior decorator, Desmond Knox-Leet, painter, and Yves Coueslant, theatre administrator and set designer) banded together to open a shop, 34 Boulevard Saint Germain. Initially, the concept of the store was to showcase fabrics, later becoming a treasure trove full of one-of-a-kind pieces they had acquired on their travels around the globe. It was when they introduced scented candles that they struck a chord with their customers. Over time this developed into a line of scents that persuaded the friends to make the art of perfume their trade.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE CONCEPT BEHIND DIPTYQUE’S 34 BOULEVARD SAINT GERMAIN SCENT?

PERFUMES PLAY SUCH AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN A WOMAN’S LIFE – WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS?

Fragrances have the ability to conjure up deep emotions that are uniquely linked to our senses.

IS THERE A STORY BEHIND YOUR LOVE AFFAIR WITH PERFUMES?

ANY TIPS ON CHOOSING THE RIGHT PERFUME FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL?

I was around 10 years old when I saw a movie starring Yves Montand. He was a perfumer and I saw him smelling and writing down the formula of a perfume. I thought it was magic and it was at that moment I decided to become a perfumer.

First, you have to make the decision to choose the one you feel comfortable with. It has to represent a small piece of your personality. I also recommend spraying no more than three fragrances on your skin at any one time. It’s essential that you live with the chosen fragrance for a day as they evolve over time.

There is no rule. I can be inspired by somebody I meet, a beautiful EMIRATES WOMAN

painting, an exquisite place like Corsica, something I eat, or a movie.

I started looking at some of the signature scents of Diptyque and combining them together to make four strong stages of scent. I used the perfumes Phliosykos and Ombre dans l’Eau, alongside combinations of the candles figuier (fig) and maquis (a plant found in Corsica), thÊ (tea), musc (musk) and finally the perfume Eau de Lierre and the candle mousses (moss).

t’s the eternal skincare dilemma: do you go natural and gently nourish your skin with botanicals, or opt for scientifically proven efficacy by slathering it in artificial ingredients? While the sleek packaging, devoid of depictions of leaves and bunnies, might lead you to place Elemis firmly in the later camp, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Now Britain’s leading luxury spa skincare brand, it was formed in the late 80s with the aim of crossing that divide and creating a collection that really gets under the skin and achieves results whilst being ‘as near to nature as possible’. Elemis Trainer Betty Gichimu explains: “The range was designed on the principle of harnessing the power of nature’s ingredients through a scientific approach, and this remains the reason why the formulations are so effective. Many products on the market claim to be ‘natural’, although simply using botanical or herbal ingredients does not guarantee that they will have the intended benefit to your skin. The extensive clinical testing and re-formulation of Elemis products ensures that each new product has a specific prescribed use with the benefits of each ingredient having been thoroughly researched.” Not just content with popping a little bit of active ingredient in and crossing their fingers for luck, Elemis ensures sufficient levels for real therapeutic activity.

A promise we wish all skincare brands adhered to. Anti-ageing should be both proactive and DAY reactive, “a good AND regime will help to NIGHT minimise existing signs of ageing and delay the development of lines and wrinkles,” says Betty. The secret? Collagen – the elusive protein that endows skin with all the tenets of a youthful appearance: firmness, smoothness, and elasticity. The Pro-Collagen range uses collagen boosting plants and marine extracts to re-invigorate the skin and shore it up for the anti-ageing fight ahead. Why use different products for day and night? The answer has more to it than just creating a smooth base for make-up during the daylight hours. “At night the skin is at its most receptive, and therefore we should apply a richer textured cream to deeply nourish and feed the skin,” Betty explains. With laminaria digita (a brown sea algae) and red coral extracts, the Pro-Collagen

“THE RANGE WAS DESIGNED ON THE PRINCIPLE OF HARNESSING THE POWER OF NATURE’S INGREDIENTS THROUGH A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH” “Cleansing is the foundation CLEANSE of good skincare, and too often is ignored or AND neglected,” cautions Betty. HONE “A good cleanser should deeply clean, balance the pH of the skin, and not strip away essential moisture levels which are naturally present.” The Melting Cleansing Gel achieves all three, and is packed with protective vitamin rich Argan oil, rosemary leaf to purify, and rice silk to mattify. It also bears the Elemis promise, a reassuring guarantee that you won’t find unnecessary and potentially harmful ingredients such as parabens (artificial preservatives), mineral oil (a by-product of the distillation of petrol), SLS (a surfactant used in floor cleaners

Oxygenating Night Cream protects the skin against environmental aggressors, and does exactly what it says on the tin by stimulating oxygen levels in the skin. Its daybreak successor, the Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, protects against the daily ravages of free-radicals and comes with a lighter texture which is readily absorbed, allowing for make-up application, or an invariably essential SPF cream, to be layered on top immediately afterwards. “The eye area is especially fragile, so any hardALL IN working eye cream THE should have a suitable EYES texture and consistency to meet its different demands.” Not only does it have significantly thinner skin, the under-eye region is also subject to increased wear and tear, even with the most gentle eye make-up application and removal, and is put to the test daily with the constant movement of facial expressions and blinking. Every product in Elemis’ Pro-Collagen range contains the active ingredient Padina Pavonica, another collagen boosting marine extract. In the cream-gel Pro-Collagen Eye Renewal it’s combined with the green algae Chlorella and Buckwheat, to reduce puffiness and dark circles, in a formulation carefully designed for this delicate area. Boasting some serious empirical backing, it has been proven to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eye by up to 60 per cent (Independent Clinical Trials 2005). With skincare’s trade-off between nature and science apparently resolved, you’ll clearly have to find something else to worry about. ■

RAW DEAL Eating more raw food every day can be a great health boost, as you take in vitamins in their purest form. “Raw foods are a great source of fibre and the vitamins B and C aren’t destroyed, as can happen when they’re cooked, says Stephanie Karl, nutritionist at Dubai London Clinic. And raw needn’t be timeconsuming or boring – head to vegetarian restaurant Magnolia at the Madinat Jumeirah for a fantastic selection of fresh and tasty raw dishes. DIY details: Magnolia, Madinat Jumeirah. (04) 3666730

NO SLOUCHING “It’s important to mind your posture when working at a desk, says Dr Javier Magnago, Specialist Registrar, Emergency Department at Dubai Hospital. “The position of your spine should be relaxed, but keeping its normal ‘S’ shape. Rest all of your back, from shoulders to buttocks to feet, when you are trying to relax and adjust the height of your chair, monitor and arm rests. Use a foot stand if necessary to keep your feet on the ground.

SOCIAL NETWORK If you feel like meeting your friends for coffee or a catch-up, don’t underestimate the positive impact it could have on your health. Studies show that people who make time for regular social interaction have better general health with less likelihood of blood pressure irregularities, heart disease, respiratory disorders and even cancer.

BRILLIANT BERRIES The most antioxidant of all fruits, blackberries can do wonders for skin, nails, hair and overall health. Just add them to cereal, yoghurt and muffins. “Blackberries are full of antioxidants, especially vitamins C and E, fibre and lycopene which protects against some cancers and is good for eyesight, says Stephanie. “They are also a very low glycaemic food and contain the fruit sugar fructose which has little effect on blood sugar levels but tastes sweet.

GO IN FOR THE WORKS For a total body tune-up, the Wellness Services at Talise Spa, Madinat Jumeirah, are designed to seek out any health problems with a mixture of tests and recommendations from the resident GP and naturopath. Their internal diagnostics laboratory can test blood, cholesterol, liver function, heart disease and hormone levels. Even psychology consultations and lifestyle coaching are available. “The focus is on identifying strengths and weaknesses to provide practical solutions to maximise health, says Jaclyn Harris, resident naturopath at Talise. “This is useful for anyone who is interested in their current health and how to improve it or for someone who has a particular health issue and is looking for holistic ways of treating it. DIY details: Talise, Madinat Jumeirah, (04) 3666818

CHEMICAL CLUTTER While having a spotless home might make you feel like a domestic goddess, too many chemicals could actually be damaging to your health. Avoid mixing cleaning products as this can release toxic fumes and try investing in some environmentallyfriendly products. Take it one step further and make your own household cleaning products, with helpful ingredients like club soda, vinegar and salt. DIY details: visit www.eartheasy.com

ANIMAL MAGIC For a health boost, pets can be an unlikely tonic. Known to reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, boost immunity and even help fight depression, you’ll find even your fitness improves if you have a dog that needs to be walked. Even if you don’t have the time or space for a pet, you can still enjoy some benefits – organisations such as Feline Friends and K9 Friends are always looking for volunteers to help look after and care for their residents. DIY details: www.felinefriendsdubai.com or www.k9friends.com

SCREEN SMART When using a computer, try to look away and focus on a distant object at least every 15 minutes. Also blink often, stretch and try to make time to walk around each hour. This can prevent eyestrain, sore muscles and headaches.

LEMON HEAVEN

You may have poured lemon juice on your hair in an attempt to get blonde highlights, but did you know that this approach can also help lighten dark skin patches, too? Just dab it on with a cotton bud twice a day and watch the progress over a few weeks. If you find neat lemon juice too harsh for your skin, try using well-brewed pure chamomile tea. It should have a similar but more gentle effect.

JUICE BOOST

If you struggle to reach your five-a-day fruit and vegetable quota, fresh juice will bump up your intake. But don’t make the mistake of buying processed juice; it’s best to go to a juice bar or, even better, squeeze carrots, oranges and apples yourself.

ALMOND ASPIRIN Almonds have a similar effect to aspirin as both contain the chemical compound salicin, the active ingredient in the tablets. Twelve almonds should have a soothing effect on a headache within a few minutes.

PILLOW TALK Your aching shoulders might not be caused by stress – it could simply be your pillow. People who sleep on their side or back can benefit from a ‘scoop’ shaped pillow, with a dip for your head in the centre. This helps to contour the position of your neck, reducing pressure on the back and shoulders. Try Ikea for a huge selection of different pillow heights, shapes and densities. IFBMUI EP JU ZPVSTFMG USJDLT ORGANIC CHIC We all know that eating organic equals a healthier life, so why not take it further? Brands such as Esprit, Victoria’s Secret and Stella McCartney use organic cotton, free of harsh chemicals – better for you and the environment, too.

PAMPER MAKES PERFECT You know how the saying goes – a little of what you fancy does you good. Having some time to yourself – painting your nails, reading a book in the bath, or an hour indulging in your favourite pastime – will provide you with a moment of calm in a hectic schedule, so don’t ignore the power of pampering

WATER WISE We’ve been told time and again to drink more water, but it’s not always that simple. Pure water can flush rapidly through the body, leaving you with little benefit. Slow down its progress with herbal teas – green tea, chamomile, ginger and mint promote weight loss, relaxation and digestion

TOMATO TWIST Raw tomato may be delicious, but once cooked it releases a nutrient called lycopene, a powerful antioxidant known to protect against cancer. Get your lycopene from tomato pasta sauce, soup and even humble tomato ketchup – sugar-free, naturally.

BRUSH BENEFITS Brushing your teeth two or more times a day will give you more than pearly whites. Recent Scottish studies have shown that gum disease is also related to heart problems, as inflammation in the mouth can play an important role in the build up of clogged arteries which can lead to heart attacks. Get brushing!

SWEET DREAMS If you have trouble sleeping, sometimes your grandmother’s remedies truly are the best. Chamomile tea has been proven to aid blissful sleep, as has the scent of lavender. Dab some oil on your pulse points or your pillow to induce relaxation.

MORE MASSAGE FOR YOUR MONEY Massage does wonders for sore muscles, but often the relief is gone all too soon. In the week following your massage, keep your problem areas in check with a simple tennis ball. Simply apply gentle pressure and roll the ball over muscles in need of attention for a soothing remedy that mimics the hands of a therapist.

MINDFUL MEDITATION Meditation is an ancient stress-busting practice that can easily be achieved at home. Invest in a meditation CD, light a candle and benefit from increased concentration and energy levels.

WELL OILED If you suffer from dry skin on your hands and feet, abandon your creams in favour of olive oil – it works hardest and best when applied overnight and covered with cotton gloves or socks.

QUARTER CONTROL Proportions, rather than weights and measures, are an easy and effective way to control your food intake. If you’re confused about how much of each food group you should be eating, imagine your plate is divided into quarters – two should be filled with vegetables, one with protein and one with carbohydrates. Meat should be served in portions the size and thickness of the palm of your hand.

VITAMIN STRESS Stress getting the better of you? Vitamin B deficiency can cause anxiety, so a vitamin B complex tablet could help. Lack of the vitamin can also contribute to mouth ulcers, so if you suffer with these painful sores at times of worry try upping your intake. “B vitamins are found in green leafy veg, wholegrains, fish, chicken and other meats, shellfish and eggs. Marmite and yeast are also very good sources, says Stephanie.

SOW YOUR OATS Oatmeal is astonishingly good for you in a number of ways – when eaten for breakfast it keeps you full and less prone to snacking, aiding weight loss. But when mixed with honey and applied to the face it makes a fantastic remedy for acne, with the oats absorbing excess oil and exfoliating, and the honey toning the skin.

GET MOVING You might not be enthralled at the prospect of going to the gym, but any exercise is better than none, says Dr Javier: “It’s proven that we should accumulate at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week. Have fun doing it or you won’t persevere. Try walking, gardening, dancing, group activities or even games consoles such as the Xbox Kinect or Wii Fit.â€? â–

I DRESS TO… Be functional. everybody in switzerland dresses for functionality against the cold, so whilst i wear jeans and boots, i also like to mix it up in my winter coat and leopard print scarf.

Zurich’s a real multi-cultural city, so I love this African restaurant called Mama Africa – it’s where loads of young, fashionable types go for a mid-week dinner.

For BeddinG down, Book in at the romantik hotel santis in appenzell. it’s a very traditional swiss B&B, very tasteful and refined, but very warm and welcoming, too.

A few of Thomas’ beloved books

Providing the accents and accessories to some of the UAE’s most fashionable homes via his THE One furniture and furnishing stores, it’s comforting to discover that Thomas Lundgren describes his own home style as “eclectic” – a perfect reflection of the pieces he designs and sells. “It’s a real mix of items, from one-off samples of designs that didn’t make it into the store and pieces we’ve picked up whilst travelling,” he adds. “We constantly change it up. It’s never static – just like me.” And the perfect foil to all that inner energy is Thomas’s prized inner courtyard at his Emirates Hills home. “There’s always a breeze there,” he says. “On an evening, it has an amazing atmosphere, so calm. When we opened the door and walked in, my first words were, ‘We must live here’.” APRIL 2011

MELINA MITRI When you’re surrounded by beautiful things as part of your PR and marketing work at celebrated Dubai boutique S*uce, it’s no wonder that the things you love, on a daily basis eventually wind their gorgeous way into your home. And Melina’s distinct home style of “clean and comfortable, with a sense of humour, and anything personalised,” coupled with her approach to sourcing pieces for her Barsha home – “I have to love it, that’s the only criterion” – saw her fall in love with a Sugarboo piece of art she found at, where else, S*uce. “I love anything that uses words as a means of expression,” says Melina. “I also love lyrics, especially when taken out of context. This piece of artwork is so clean and symmetrical and perfect. Is love all we need? In the broadest sense, undoubtedly yes. And who are we to argue with John Lennon anyway?” 214

DR KARIM FEKIH

The Kourosh Shishegaran painting provides the wow factor

Touchable textures and warm tones play a huge role in 32year-old Dr Fekih’s sanctuary away from work. “I love the luxury of brown leather and the warmth that a beautiful beige brings,” says the youthful founder of The Clinic dental surgery in DIFC. “I go in for a mix of textures at home, white varnished furniture, chairs covered in fabrics, silk carpet and a huge pink-gold sofa.” A self-confessed entertaining guru, when guests come to Dr Fekih’s home, the ‘wow’ factor is provided by the Kourosh Shishegaran painting he has hanging above the sofa. “It was love at first sight,” he admits of the piece. “I love the explosion of colour and the calligraphy. As soon as I saw it I simply had to have it.” He adds, “It was like when you see a beautiful woman and you just step back and go ‘wow!’” APRIL 2011

It also reflects our taste in art.” Spending most of her time in the living room – “my favourite room because it’s filled with books, music and art” – it’s also here where you’ll find Melika’s most treasured items, her foutas. “A fouta is traditionally a hammam towel,” she explains. “In my home they are used for everything – throws, day bed covers, beach towels, as hanging decorations. My children grew up with them, and we have at least 20 out at any one time.”

It was his favourite chair to sit in, watch TV in, enjoy a drink in and shout at me from,” Essa adds with a smile. “It was his throne.”

ake-up artists have an eye for aesthetics – what hues marry well, whether rainbow brights or neutral tones are on trend and how to work wonders with a blank canvas. As make-up artist to the stars and CEO of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Bobbi Brown is known for her simple ‘no make-up make-up’ vision, with a beauty and skincare empire that is sold in over 400 stores in 20 countries around the world. Her expertise, eye for detail, never-ending quest to find the right shades, textures and colours that work on a wide range of complexions and her ability to create her own signature style has seen her become the exclusive beauty editor of The Today Show, a frequent talking head on E! and Style channels, and author of both beauty books and makeup manuals. After 20 years in the beauty business, Bobbi’s name is synonymous with style, sophistication and natural, refined glamour. However, it’s not just the face that Bobbi turns her artistic hand to – her homes benefit equally. Living mainly in Montclair, New Jersey, with her husband, Steven Plofker, and their three boys, it’s her beach house holiday home in Bayhead, New Jersey, that truly embodies her style. Known as ‘a country village by the sea’, Bayhead is a beautiful seaside resort, with views of Barnegat Bay. Her home is a picturesque, rustic family beach house that is cosy, warm and oozing with a home-grown, earthy feel. “Each year my husband and I went to Bayhead to celebrate our anniversary, she explains. “We hoped that someday we would buy a house there, and, luckily for Bobbi, her dream came true. The interiors have fully embraced the location’s rustic nature with wood panelling, pieces made of driftwood, sea and beach-inspired accoutrements and a palette of neutral tones paired with the familiar white and blue marine-esque hues. “The house is situated right by the sea. I love the beach, as it’s where I feel most relaxed, she says. “I wanted a house that allowed me to spend as much time there as I wanted. With a location so perfect, the retreat that provides the perfect bolthole for her family is never short of a fond memory or two. “There are so many to choose from! she laughs. “Honestly, I am so happy with all the times I’ve spent at the beach house with my husband and my sons during the summer months. It just makes me feel so relaxed, alive and creative, she explains. “The sand and the sound of the water relaxes me and I spend most of my time there with my husband and sons, and that makes me feel lucky to be alive. Consequently, feeling alive and feeling relaxed helps me to think creatively.

The decorative design came courtesy of a team effort from herself and Steven, a real-estate developer. “My husband and I carried out the interior design work together. We both wanted the house to remain simple and classic, an aesthetic that clearly mirrors that of her makeup line. In terms of furniture and objets d’art, it’s an eclectic mix of local and international curios. “My husband and I bought most of our furniture at local stores like Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn, but sometimes I bring trinkets back from my travels and I like to add them to the house. They remind me of all the wonderful trips we’ve made. And with the interiors came the mission to create a home away from home. “The great thing about this house is that it serves many different purposes! I like to spend time alone with my family or host people for all kinds of events, whether it’s for a big party on the beach, or a small, relaxed dinner with friends. Oh, we do like to be beside the seaside

Our one-stop shop for all things exquisitely stylish, Harvey Nichols has dressed us for many an occasion and it’s hard to imagine Dubai pre-HN – and luckily for us, we don’t have to. In honour of the Dubai store’s fifth birthday, the city’s most stylish flocked in their finery to the Oasi terrace at The Armani Hotel to watch the celebrations unfold in the shadow of Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain. The evening’s entertainment took a creative turn as lycra clad dancers tripped the light fantastic on the balcony bedecked in crystal helmets, while magicians dressed in silver worked their slight-ofhand on the crowd. Celebratory fashion pieces JAMIE PHOENIX AND stood on display, while models sashayed amidst the LOVESTYLE.COM’S guests in the latest floor-sweeping gowns in electric PRIMROSE SKELTON blue – the colour of the night. With celebrations like this, plus a goodie bag worthy of the Oscars’ gifting room, we cannot wait to see what Harvey Nichols has in store for us in the coming year.

The pick of Dubai’s art connoisseurs and fashion elite attended the Art Dubai Closing Party sponsored by Belvedere, with the magical Fort Island in Madinat Jumeirah as the setting. The party was held to honour the four-day long celebration of contemporary art, held under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, which saw 81 galleries from 34 countries participate to make Art Dubai the largest exhibition of its kind to be held in The Middle East to date. With exhibits from up-and-coming artists juxtaposed with museum pieces, including sculpture, portraiture and installation, all corners of the art world were covered. The Van Cleef & Arpels exhibition, Les Voyages Extraordinaires, added a whimsical fashion edge, showcasing the latest pieces in their fine jewellery collection. At nightfall the Believe Belvedere party was the name on the lips of every art enthusiast, as towering stilettos tottered over the bridge to the awaiting white carpet and marquÊe on the other side. The hot topic of conversation was art savvy, of course, before discussions gave way to dancing as the DJ, accompanied by an electric guitarist, provided the evening’s beats.

SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV 22)

Take the stabilisers off and learn to trust your abilities – you can’t rely on support forever. This lesson will be put to the test come Sunday 10th, but let go and you’ll surprise even yourself. The sun is beating hard this month but there will be more than one reason why you need to cool off – hot-headed isn’t becoming of you. SAGGITARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 23)

(Mar 21 – Apr 20)

There’s much ado about nothing this month, and the longer you stew the less results you’ll see. Fine, not everything’s going quite as it should, but who said change was a bad thing? And, while we’re on the subject, a meeting on Monday 11th will bring about the good side of change and you’ll be all wrapped up before the month is out.

TAURUS (APR 21 – MAY 21)

When is enough enough? When you say so, that’s when. Enough of being bossed around and playing second fiddle. Time to take it on the chin, step up to the plate and prove you’re quite capable, thank you very much. Look out for a mood change on Thursday 21st – not necessarily yours, and not necessarily a bad thing.

in different directions and at the moment you’re split in two. Rarely is it advised to take sides, but come Sunday 3rd, you’ll have run out of options – just choose wisely. A proposal offers an insight you have been patiently waiting for, so sit back, put your feet up and enjoy the new road ahead.

required the most. Someone in your life needs you – ignore the signs and risk losing a dear friendship. Greet challenges with your usual enthusiasm, because one towards the end of the month will require you to channel all your energies. But with your track record, it’s one-love to you.

LEO (JULY 24 – AUG 23) GEMINI (MAY 22 – JUN 21)

Practice what you preach, isn’t that what they teach you? Play by the rules, heed your own advice and witness everything fall neatly into place by Friday 8th. Cupid’s arrow is aimed and ready to shoot, you just have to choose if you’re ready to be love struck. Remember, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Everybody deserves to be selfish and this is your month, so be frivolous with your time, your money and your wanton abandon. A question arises on Tuesday 6th and though the answer may not be clear just yet, patience will reward you. An unresolved work issue threatens to bubble over if you don’t confront it – be brave. LIBRA (SEPT 24 – OCT 22)

Invest in the best and the path will be golden, venture off into unchartered waters and who knows what will be dished up next. You’re always fair game when it comes to living life to the max, and putting your all in is second nature to you. Ease off a touch towards Monday 25th, as a slower pace will work better and will give you time reflect.

How many times do you need to be told? I want never gets, and everything worth wanting is worth waiting for, be it the latest ‘it’ bag, a new job proposal, or this month’s eye candy. Hard work will be rewarded, so head down, please. Take advantage of some peace on Wednesday 13th, it’s a rare commodity these days. CAPRICORN (DEC 22 – JAN 20)

Long ago a relationship important to you fell by the wayside, but an opportunity to rekindle it is about to make its presence known. Tread cautiously, but once you’ve tested the water, throw caution to the wind. Saturday 30th is the day to look out for – a much warranted pat on the back is due. AQUARIUS (JAN 21 – FEB 19)

Charity begins at home, so when you stumble upon a lost cause on Wednesday 20th, scoop it up and take charge. A little bit of philanthropy will stretch a long way. An admirer paying you attention shouldn’t be brushed aside. You’ve been waiting in line for romance to pay you a visit and your number has just been called. PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20)

Stock up on compliments while you can, because for a few weeks things are set to get rocky and the memories will carry you through. Make a call on Sunday 24th, regardless of the courage it takes to make it. If you don’t try you’ll never succeed, and you’ve got nothing to lose and all to gain – but only if you fully commit. ■

I’m very involved in my charity projects. The Naked Heart Foundation was set up in 2005, following the awful hostage siege in Beslan. I wanted to help those children and improve their lives. When children play they forget everything that is happening around them.
