and smug as I dismiss the hostess as she offers me a measly (and distinctly unstylish) blanket, in favour of something infinitely more cosy and chic. With warmth (and fashion) in mind, a far more forward-thinking woolly to be wearing, is a fine knit cardigan; thin enough not to kill you in the heat, easily removable during a meltdown, and offering protection from the hurricane air-con. A fitted style is key, and they look even better belted at the waist with something skinny. Especially good versions can be found at Dries Van Noten, while there’s a lighter than air peachy number at Nina Ricci. As a hangover from last season, I am also still sporting Alexander Wang’s genius sleeveless blazer, which gives you a sharp tailored aspect, but leaves arms free with room to breathe. This season, if the bank manager allows, YSL’s oversized waistcoat will be added to my hit list.

it to the car when the parking meter has expired, will no doubt confirm that this little saying is nothing but an urban myth. So, I’ve taken the proverbial bull by its horns, and gone cap in hand to the gentlemen’s section of Marks & Spencer for the ‘Cool & Fresh’ range. I steer clear of the pants and socks, and instead discover their nicely cut tank vests, which work perfectly with my boyfriend-cut trousers. Cool in both senses of the word. I’ve come to the conclusion that the ubiquitous pashmina is the fashion equivalent of a chocolate digestive – offering a certain degree of comfort, yet always leaving you hankering for something more fabulous. These cashmere wraps are now relegated to the office drawer and used in case of emergencies. The only acceptable place where I do proudly sport one is an aircraft cabin, where I can be both snug

And, while SJP may have sparked a trend for ‘city shorts’ in NYC, they are even more appropriate here in Dubai. They don’t break any nudity laws and are much safer than a flippy skirt in a sandstorm. There are so many styles out there to choose from: sleek and pageboy, preppy or pretty, print and plain, or safari-esque and tribal. The quirkier ones that have landed in a flurry are the leather versions from ChloĂŠ to Hermès, and Topshop to Zara, and even (gasp) Debenhams. But I have no intention of squeaking when I walk. I’ll maybe, just maybe, try them if I book into the Ice Hotel in Sweden, or if there’s a dramatic shift in climate here. But for now, I’ll stick to the easy-breezy styles that look hot and I feel cool wearing.

t’s July, and quite frankly I’m dressing for artic climates rather than the desert. One minute I’m the Wicked Witch of the East, melting into the sand under Dubai’s insane sun and the next‌ Under the air-con vent I’m shivering from hypothermia, while colleagues reach for the nearest electrical device to resuscitate me. A touch on the dramatic side, but you get the idea. In the UAE, we’re dressing for two seasons – indoors and out. I try to follow the age-old rule of wearing natural fabrics, such as cotton, linen and wool to help regulate body temperature, plus, the newer techie fabrics which also offer ‘cooling’ properties. However, much to my dismay, these are primarily found in the men’s section of department stores. Why? Because people believe that men ‘perspire’, whilst women only gently ‘glow’. Yet anyone who has bared witness to me hot-footing

or decades, Jennifer Lopez has been in her element as the poster girl for a generation of trailblazing women – determined, driven, passionate and, with one look at her Latina figure, ‘all woman’. Propelled into the spotlight through Fox’s 1994 South Central TV show and the 1995 drama My Family, she hit the ground running, a force of nature to be reckoned with. A dancer by trade, an actress by passion, a singer by talent and fashion icon by default, her abilities, then and now, transcended genres. Add to that her glamour and suddenly Jennifer Lopez was a bankable commodity, turning herself, and her adopted alter-ego JLo, into a highly successful self-made brand. Since those first days as backing dancer to Janet Jackson, Jennifer has danced, sung and acted her way into the affections of critics, fans and peers alike, whilst working tirelessly to ensure the lightbulb of fame never went out. But come 2006, after a sea of number one albums, Hollywood boxoffice hits (she lauds the title as the highest paid Latin actress in Hollywood history), and numerous side-line projects, and the 41-year-old Latina lady from Castle Hill, California was through. A selfprescribed ‘life-sabbatical’ was undertaken, whisking the diva instantly out of the searing glare of the media, affording her time away from sets and stages, to lead a relatively quieter life, focusing on what had begun to matter most to her – marriage and motherhood. However, skip forward to 2010, babies have been born, the career hiatus is over, and Jennifer is back and it’s business as usual. “Crossroads come at many times during your life. For me, it was a choice to take some time off,” she says. “Being famous is mind-blowing and it enriches my heart and soul, but it can make you lose touch a little bit. Everything had become so much and I realised there was a way to pull back from that.” And so the ‘sabbatical’ started, with her husband of six years, Marc Anthony, for company. “Marc and I are home-bodies and we revelled in just being us and being together as a couple.” However, come 2008 and the couple had to make room for two additions to their family, with the birth of twins, Max and Emme. Priorities undoubtedly shifted for the notoriously hard-working entertainer, and whilst motherhood is clearly her proudest achievement so far, the passion she has for her work became an everincreasing, yet welcome pulling on her apron strings. “I’ve always been working and to have left it for a couple of years to have my kids and spend time with them has been a big deal for me, but I love being back at work.” And back she is, looking every bit the Latina goddess – real woman, real curves – that she has become so famous for (though she still laughs off rumours that her infamous behind is insured for US$1 billion). Though, for a woman who has outwardly embraced and actively promoted her curvaceous Latina figure (nicknamed La Guitarra because her body is shaped like a guitar), personal concerns regarding baby weight and post-pregnancy pounds plagued her, just as they do most mothers. “People often equate being voluptuous and sexy with promiscuous. And before I had children, they’d think that because I’m shaped this way, I must be scandalous. But it’s just the opposite. And it’s hard to get back in shape after having a baby. I’d been in shape my whole life, so I naively thought the weight would drop but it wasn’t easy,” she laughs. In fact, it was an uphill struggle for the diva who had gained 60 lbs. “I trained for a triathlon and then after that it took a lot of dieting.” Proving to any doubters that even the rich and famous aren’t immune to the body insecurities that befall us mere mortals. “Part of my business is about being in shape and looking good. You can’t lie to yourself about that,” she adds. “But you get past your 20s, you’ve got kids and you’re

Not only is Jennifer back on the music and movie scene (her seventh studio album Love? and new movie The Back-up Plan are both out now), her recent returns to the red carpet have been nothing short of stunning. Spotted on a boat in the south of Spain, flaunting an enviable and very much in shape figure mere months after her twins were born, she didn’t fail to impress the judgemental eyes of the fashion police either – at the 2008 Met Costume Gala in a beautiful one-shouldered Alberta Ferretti number, or the 2009 Golden Globes draped in a plunging gold Marchesa dress. “I’m only human and I can’t always look my best, but I do take care of myself,” she says. “I do work at it, of course I do. I eat well and sleep is my weapon. I don’t take sun, or drink or smoke, I drink water, I use a good cleanser… that all helps.” And when we broach the taboo subject of the possibility of plastic surgery, she says: “I don’t see myself having it, but I don’t want to judge as I don’t know how I’ll feel when I’m older. I know ageing is tough but I am more of a natural person and I feel the same way now as I felt when I was in my 20s. Beauty isn’t an outside, physical thing.” Whatever the source of Jennifer’s beauty, it doesn’t go unnoticed that she is indeed easy on the eye (and the one time face of L’Oréal) – surely going at least some way in securing not only leading roles i n Ho l l y w o o d , b u t a l s o numerous leading men in her life. Her tumultuous and much scrutinised love life has seen her engaged four times and married three times, all alongside a string of high-profile relationships. Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs touted Jennifer as arm candy during the early stages of her career – all eyes were Jennifer as she stepped out in ‘that’ sheer green Versace dress at the 2000 Grammys, which did to her career what ‘that’ Versace safety pin dress did to Liz Hurley’s in 1994. While the monocle ‘Bennifer’ was born after her much-publicised romance with Ben Affleck in 2002/2003, having met on the set of their movie, Gigli. Yet, despite years of dating that greased the pockets of hacks and camera-poised paparazzi, it was down to Marc Anthony, a fellow Latino singer she’d recorded a duet with in 2001, to finally ‘put a ring on it’, to coin a Beyoncé phrase. “People made me out to be a serial marrying person or something, but I’m not – I’m actually a die-hard romantic,” she says. “But you read what they say, get upset a little and move on. There are certain people that are marked for death,” she laughs. “I have my little list of those that treated me unfairly!” However, it’s easier to cope with acid tongues and column inches laced with arsenic when you have millions in the bank, a devoted husband and two beautiful children. And so to them, a topic that creeps in to every conversation. “Life is definitely better now. It’s harder, but better,” she states. “There’s nothing in the world bigger or better than having a child. There is no bigger success. There is no bigger love. There is no deeper joy than having your own child.” Motherhood very much agrees with Jennifer and it’s a role, although taken on relatively late in her life, that she has taken to with a

confident contentment. “Everybody says it, but the best thing about motherhood is just how much you love them.” Love, a word that drips off her tongue at every turn these days, is also the subject of her latest album, Love?. “We’ve all had a love of our life and failed love affairs. This album is about everything to do with love – about how confusing it can be and all the things that everyone wonders about. People need love for survival almost as much as they need air.” Jennifer, however, once a girl who looked like she was so desperately scrabbling around to find the ‘one’, now has him in her grasp. And she’s not letting go. “You don’t find Prince Charming when everything is perfect,” she states. “You shouldn’t be with someone if they make you feel less than who you are. We [Marc] truly love each other. There’s a deep respect and admiration and we make each other better people.” All this intoxicating ‘love’ stuff may seem in a word, ‘gushy’, but she’s quick to remind us that she’s all too aware of the trials and tribulations that come as a package deal with love. “Anybody who’s successful at relationships needs a pat on the back – they’re hard work. Women need to find a balance between individual power and becoming “us” in a relationship. Latina women are raised to cater to their men, and I find joy in that, but he’s gotta appreciate it!” she laughs. Her latest Hollywood endeavour, The Back-up Plan, focuses on two key factors taking priority in Jennifer’s life – motherhood and men, and acts almost as art mirroring life. The romantic comedy, about a woman who conceives twins through artificial insemination the day she meets the man of her dreams, really struck a chord with the actress. “I loved it because I could relate to the story and it was different. The idea of the conflict, the whole obstacle of the relationship being a pregnancy, a child, and how serious that is and how life-changing it is.” Life-changing it has indeed been in reality too, and so to the next phase of life… With several reinventions behind her (morphing from backing dancer, into JLo the singer, to ‘Jenny from the Block’ the R‘n’B diva, to Hollywood screen goddess, and now to wife and mother) what path will the supernova be trail-blazing next? “I’m at that point in my life where it’s time to take the next step, to go to the next level,” she says. “I’m planning a tour – well, first promote the album, then the tour – and I have a new fragrance coming out this Fall called Love and Glamour. And philanthropy is also key.” And by this, she refers to the Maribel Foundation (named after Marc’s sister), which she and her sister Lynda set up in 2009, providing paediatric healthcare services to remote areas around the world. “When you become a mom, your perspective and view on life changes. You want to be able to provide for your child as a mother and this is something we’re hoping to help with.” And, of course, amongst all this somewhere, somehow, she’ll take it back to the grass roots of what brought success in the first place – her desire to entertain. “Basically, everything I wanted before I want twice as much now. Not material things. As an artist I don’t know exactly what I’ll be doing, but I know I’ll still be doing it, because you are who you are until the day you die.” ■

uffering from jealousy isn’t a rare emotion, in fact it’s an all too common affliction that grips most women at various stages throughout their lives. Old, young, rich, poor, mothers, business women… few women can proclaim to never having fallen under the spell of this powerful, and sometimes crippling, emotion. Some women grapple with the feeling on a daily basis, for others it is more sporadic. But the most illuminating fact is that jealousy and envy are both common and natural emotions and that no matter how successful, confident, content or composed you are as a woman, wife, mother or friend, no head or heart is immune from them. While different relationships generate different emotional reactions, jealousy and envy can be, according to Emily Cheyne, founder of Know How Life, a Dubai-based professional life coaching service, be split into five categories: competition (pushing self-improvement), egotism (where the need for esteem and respect from others must be satisfied), exclusion (a fear of being left out, usually stemming from childhood), possessive and fear (which both usually are associated with a relationship and the possession of someone you fear losing). The question is, though, where do these emotions stem from? To begin with, there are two specific entities – envy and jealousy. According to Jared Alden, Psychotherapist at the German Center for Neurology and Psychiatry in Dubai, the former is a more specific emotion of the pain of not having something you see in another (such as physical attributes or material belongings). While the latter is the fear of losing something that you already have (such as your looks or your husband). However, in modern common language both terms have become interchangeable, with each emotion mirroring the other’s aspects. However, whether these feelings manifest themselves in jealousy or envy over qualities, possessions or achievements towards a friend, partner, colleague or sibling, according to the experts they

are all reactive, natural and normal emotions, with the origins all stemming from the same place. “The root of all jealousy comes from the same source – fear,” says Jared. “We fear what we don’t have and we fear what might be taken from us. But just because these thoughts don’t necessarily make sense to our head, may not automatically make them wrong.” Yasemin Demirtas, Certified Co-Active Coach and Certified Relationship Coach for Effect Coaching in Dubai, adds: “Jealousy is a natural instinct and, in all scenarios, serves to protect what we have and also comes down to the fear of not feeling good enough, that someone else is better or has the things we don’t have, alongside the constant dissatisfaction with ourselves.” Emily also believes that a lack of self-confidence, low self-esteem and low self-image are all factors that play a part. “People believe if they had someone’s else qualities, they’d become a more successful or attractive person and often look for validation, approval, respect and attention from someone else. Women also have an underlying wish or desire to be different from the way they are, or the way they perceive themselves, as well as having an underlying wish or desire to have something they do not have, which is often prompted by a sense of personal success or professional inadequacy in life.” According to Emily, other influences can also often be attributed to the origins of the fear and/or insecurity. “Our childhoods play a huge role in developing our beliefs and perception, and thus influence our tendency to feel jealous or envious.” Yasemin adds: “Any emotion that is built around childhood gets connected with those memories, so when events occur that conjure up similar memories, they will trigger the same emotions.” Yet more interesting still is why women, even those who from the outside seem confident, composed and together, suffer from the same afflictions and feelings of inadequacy than those who outwardly appear to be shyer, less confident and perhaps less successful? “Everyone experiences jealousy, yet those with low self-esteem or confidence will just find themselves dealing with it on a more regular basis,” says Emily. “While others who are

Are you dissatisfied with a certain area in your life that your partner’s

success is highlighting? Or is their success making you feel inadequate and therefore fearing losing them? Convert your emotions into positive reactions, and use their success as motivation for yourself. JARED: All relationships go through changes, but don’t set yourself up to fail, because there are some battles you can’t win. Step back and see how else your needs might be met, and work out how you want to be valued as an individual, not in response to someone else.

SCENARIO 3 SIBLING RIVALRY Despite being confident of your own achievements, there is a part of you that feels like you don’t measure up to your sibling. EMILY: Sibling jealousy stems from childhood, where you grow up comparing who has the best toys, the most attention… which transfers into

adulthood and more relevant social models. However, life isn’t a head-to-head competition and the individual needs to learn to value their own talents and successes. JARED: If you spend a lot of time with your family, it’s easy to lose sight of the outside world. But opening your eyes to the bigger picture will allow you to gain perspective about what really matters where family ties are concerned.

SCENARIO 4 WORK CONCERNS At work, people seem to be forever more successful than you, constantly garnering praise whilst rising up the ranks far faster than yourself. EMILY: Psychologically, the work place is an extension of our schooldays, where you want to be the best at everything because it’s what you believe society expects of you. It’s important to work out where these

emotions originate – are you jealous of the colleague themselves or the external factors associated with that person’s success? Letting these emotions get out of control will affect your productivity, potentially gaining you a negative reputation. Manage your feelings, act on them, turning the negative reaction into a positive action. JARED: By changing your attitude, you can be the change you want to see in others. hose of us who keep a trained eye on the fashion world will undoubtedly, at some point, have wondered how designers find their inspiration. However, this season, when it comes to fashion houses such as Hermès, Bottega Veneta, Lacoste and Loewe, the fog was lifted as a clear case of tennis fever took over. At Bottega Veneta the looks served-up had a glamorous and altogether ‘just got off the court’ vibe; at Lacoste it was the turn of tennis whites for shorts, skirts and blazers accessorised with stylish sweatbands, but it was left to the masters of fashion, Hermès, to really make this trend sparkle. Over at the French fashion house models sashayed, and even played tennis down the catwalk swathed in tennis JULY 2010

CANCER RATES ARE ON THE RISE TRUE: Cancer is still one of the world’s leading causes of death, and according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the number of global cases will rise by 45 per cent by the year 2030. “Part of this trend stems from better diagnosis and better records,� explains Dr Mahir Al-Hilali, Specialist Haemato-Oncologist at The City Hospital in Dubai. “But there is also a genuine increase in cancers, because of the way we are living, and also because average lifespans are getting longer.�

I’M TOO YOUNG TO GET CANCER FALSE: Sadly, cancer can strike at any age. “Locally we see a lot of cancer in younger patients,� says Thomas Adrian, Professor and Chair of the Dept of Physiology and Chair of the Oncology Research Group at the United Arab Emirates University Faculty of Medicine. “In the UAE we’re seeing incidences of breast cancer on average a decade earlier than in Western Europe, and it’s often more aggressive. So there must be certain environmental or genetic factors that are triggering the illness earlier in the Emirati population.�

IF A FAMILY MEMBER HAS CANCER, THEN I’M MORE LIKELY TO GET IT TRUE AND FALSE: Only five to 10 per cent of cancers are clearly linked to an inherited gene change, says Macmillan Cancer Support, one of the UK’s leading cancer support groups. However, for certain types, such as bowel or breast cancer, there is an established link to family history. “If a person inherits a particular gene mutation for breast cancer, their risk of developing breast cancer is 87 per cent by the age of 70, compared to seven per cent for the average population,� says Dr Sanjida Ahmed, Counselor in Molecular Biology at diagnostic specialists Eastern Biotech.

FOLLOWING A HEALTHY DIET CAN PREVENT CANCER TRUE: “Diet plays a very major role,” says Prof Adrian. “We know that certain components can be protective, while others are harmful.” He recommends a healthy diet high in fibre, with a wide variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, and a lower intake of fats. While regular consumption of anti-oxidant rich foodstuffs, such as tomatoes or black grapes, can potentially lower cancer risks. BECOMING A VEGETARIAN WILL REDUCE THE RISKS FALSE: While excessive red and processed meat consumption has been linked to bowel, breast, lung and prostate cancer, it doesn’t mean you have to avoid meat altogether. Lean white meat and fish are good sources of protein and can be part of a healthy diet.

BARBECUES ARE LINKED TO CANCER TRUE: Certain cooking methods have been found to increase the chances of developing cancer. Burned or blackened food, such as barbecued, contains higher levels of carcinogens known as heterocyclic aromatic amines, and a recent study from the University of Minnesota in the US has linked the consumption of charred food to a 60 per cent increase in the risk of pancreatic cancer.

CASUAL SMOKING WON’T HURT FALSE: There is no questioning the link between smoking and lung cancer, but can the occasional cigarette pose a problem? “Yes,” says Dr Hilali, “Smoking is harmful full-stop, whether it’s active, passive or just one or two cigarettes each day.” And while shisha might appear healthier because of the fruit flavours and water filtration, in fact it’s even more harmful. “Smoking shisha for one hour is the equivalent of smoking 70 to 100 cigarettes,” he warns.

SUNBATHING IS FINE IF I USE A HIGH ENOUGH FACTOR… FALSE: Unless it’s out of a bottle, there’s no such thing as a ‘safe’ tan, and even the lightest of tans indicates damage to the epidermis. An estimated 60,000 people die every year from skin cancers caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security by SPFs on suntan lotions – while they may prevent the discomfort of burning, they do not stop cancercausing UVA rays from penetrating the skin. And there’s no proof that getting a ‘base’ tan can prevent burning or skin damage – in fact, an initial session on a sunbed for those under the age of 35 can increase their risk of skin cancer by up to 75 per cent.

THERE’S NO WAY TO PREVENT CANCER FALSE: According to the WHO, more than 40 per cent of cancers can actually be prevented. Cervical cancer is one such example: the third most common cancer in women, more than half a million are affected across the world each year, with a mortality rate of 52 per cent. Yet regular pap smears are an effective defense, detecting the presence of abnormal cells, which can be treated before they develop into cancer. Doctors have also now established a clear link between cancer of the cervix and the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The world’s most prevalent sexually transmitted infection, figures from the WHO show that globally more than 11 per cent of women harbour the disease. However, there are now two vaccinations to protect against it – Gardasil and Cervarix – and the UAE was the first country in the region to offer the vaccine to girls over the age of 17.

BEAUTY PRODUCTS CAUSE CANCER TRUE AND FALSE: The US Food and Drug Administration has debunked recent scare stories about the ‘cancer-causing’ effects of anti-perspirants and hair dyes. However, a study by the UAE University in Al Ain recently discovered a link between synthetic ‘black’ henna and an increased rate of certain types of leukemia among Emirati women. If in doubt, opt for the natural version, which should not contain harmful carcinogenous chemicals such as benzene.

…BUT WE NEED SOME SUN EXPOSURE TO PREVENT AGAINST OTHER CANCERS TRUE: “Adequate levels of Vitamin D are very important for protecting against cancers, but you need sunlight for that,” explains Prof Adrian. “Here in the UAE, we’re in a society where many women are covered for cultural reasons, but this means that they may not get sufficient exposure to the sun. Just five or 10 minutes light exposure per day is sufficient, otherwise they may require extra Vitamin D supplements.”

BEING OVERWEIGHT INCREASES MY RISK OF DEVELOPING CANCER TRUE: Obesity comes with a number of health risks, one of which is a higher chance of developing cancer – the WHO says that it’s the second highest preventable cause after smoking. It’s been linked to an increased prevalence of cancers of the bowel, uterus, kidney and oesophagus. USING MY MOBILE PHONE IS LIKELY TO GIVE ME CANCER UNCOMFIRMED: “Obviously they are sources of radiation, but in spite of the many studies on mobile phones, the results are still inconclusive,” says Prof Adrian. “My view is that if there is an effect, it must be very minor, otherwise the data would be much more obvious, especially when compared to other environmental factors such as smoking or pollution.” CHEMICALS IN PLASTICS SUCH AS WATER BOTTLES ARE CARCINOGENOUS FALSE: “It’s urban legend that plastic bottles contain carcinogens known as dioxins, but that’s certainly not true,” says Prof Adrian. “There’s certainly no danger about freezing plastic water bottles, and items such as Tupperware are generally microwave safe and strictly controlled to not contain any harmful substances.”

BREAST-FEEDING CAN OFFER PROTECTION AGAINST CANCER TRUE: Not only is breast-feeding good for healthy babies, it can also have health benefits for nursing mothers too. A recent long-term study from the University of North Carolina discovered that women with a family history of breast cancer had a significantly reduced risk of developing the disease if they breast-fed their babies.

HIGH STRESS LEVELS CAN MAKE CANCERS WORSE TRUE: A recent study from the University of Texas discovered that stress hormones such as adrenaline could actually directly encourage tumour growth and spread, while general stress can weaken the immune system’s defenses against the disease.

A POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE IS ALL YOU NEED TO BEAT CANCER FALSE: Research has discovered no link between optimism and survival rates, yet a positive attitude can have a knock-on effect to a cancer patient’s general well-being, by staying active, accepting support from family and friends and having the mental strength to emotionally deal with the prognosis to create a better quality of life during the illness.

BY TAKING VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS, I CAN PROTECT MYSELF FROM TUMOURS TRUE AND FALSE: Anti-oxidants such as Vitamin C can offer some level of protection against the oxidants caused by smoking, says Dr Hilali. But supplements should not be substituted for a healthy diet full of fresh fruit and vegetables. A recent survey, which reviewed the results of nearly 70 clinical trials, discovered that if used incorrectly, some supplements could actually have a neutral or even harmful effect.

INJURIES CAN LEAD TO CANCER IN LATER LIFE FALSE: “Cancer is generally sporadic, so it can happen to anyone,” says Dr Ahmed. But it’s cell damage from environmental factors such as absorbing carcinogens into the body rather than specific injuries that can lead to an increased risk, she explains, from smoking and alcohol use to exposure to materials such as arsenic. CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY EFFECTIVE TREATMENT FALSE: Not necessarily, it’s all about the best solution for each individual – and weighing up outcomes against risk and side effects. Surgical removal of a tumour can also be an option, depending on how much it has spread, or radiation therapy, which aims to destroy cells or keep them from multiplying further. I PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN PROTECTING MYSELF TRUE: “Aim to live a well-balanced life, avoiding things that can harm your health, such as smoking or alcohol,” recommends Dr Hilali. But regardless of how healthy your lifestyle is, it’s still important to be pro-active with self-examination and regular screenings and Pap smears, says Dr Ahmed, and to report anything unusual, however small, to your physician. “The main problem is when people are scared and postpone seeing a doctor,” adds Prof Adrian. “The likelihood is that something can be done if it is caught early enough.”

A CANCER DIAGNOSIS IS A DEATH SENTENCE FALSE: This may have been the case half a century ago, but today the outlook is generally positive. “Oncology has progressed enormously over the past 20 or 30 years,” says Dr Hilali. “A lot of people who suffered are now cancer-free thanks to surgery, radiation treatment or chemotherapy. It may have been a difficult experience, but they have managed to live through it and survive and go back to leading a normal life.” There is certainly reason to be optimistic, adds Prof Adrian. “Nowadays something like 75 per cent of cancer patients are long-term survivors.” ■

Patrons of the Elephant Family, Tanaz Dizadji and British socialite Tamara Beckwith, hosted the evening’s festivities and guests included Heather Kerzner, Kelly Hoppen and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson. A colourful display of Sacha Jafri’s art and his very own elephant sculpture set the scene for this stylish and sophisticated soiree held at the home of Dutch computer tycoon Jan Mol in London’s Covent Garden. Sacha’s donated art works were later auctioned off by Sotheby’s, raising over US$750,000 for the Elephant Family.
