I’m a recent F1 convert. Ever since Drive To Survive landed on our TV screens, race weekends have become the principal reason to decline all invitations to socialise on a Sunday. If the F1 is on, you can be almost certain that my fiancé and I will be glued to the epic spectacle of rubber-burning racing, and all of the exhilarating action and drama that unfolds around it. Our household is strictly a McLaren fan zone this season – we love a comeback kid – but there’s no denying that all the teams have brought some epic moments to the track. Which is exactly what I’m hoping for, when arguably the biggest weekend in the Abu Dhabi sporting calendar returns this month. Sure, Max Verstappen might have already secured his third world championship title. But the final race of the F1 season is always a show-stopping spectacle of on- and off-grid action, pairing racing excellence with after-race concerts, yacht parties, culinary pop-ups and a legion of celebrity guests you’d typically find only really find at an Oscars party. Our ultimate guide unfolds from p19. Yas Island isn’t just serving as the stage for one mega event this month. Gateway South Park provides the backdrop for the welcome return of Taste of Abu Dhabi, a three-day, flavour-filled festival that puts the capital’s culinary greats firmly in the spotlight. Whether you’re looking to tuck-in to the culinary delights of top restaurants like Oak Room, Otoro and BB Social Dining, or you’re hoping to watch a master at work like José Pizarro or Marco Pierre White, you’ll want to bring your sharpest chef whites to p27.

WHAT’S ON Working up a sweat at… The Lab Studios The newest sweat-inducing studio on the Dubai workout circuit is The Lab. This upscale fitness studio is home to a trio of tough workouts that take place across a spin studio, hit room, and strength and conditioning lab. It’s the latter where I found myself this month, being led through a 600-calorie-busting class of weight lifting, erg-smashing, burpeeenduring fitness fun. @thelabstudios.uae – Alice Holtham, Group Editor
Getting excited about the return of… Global Village We here at What’s On are huge fans of Global Village. The pro league family destination opened its doors for the latest season at the end of last month, and we were there on opening day to soak it all in. The food, the shopping, the rides, performances, fireworks, pavilions and shows – they say it takes a village to raise a child, but it takes a new Global Village season to raise the bar of alfresco family entertainment. @globalvillageuae – Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter
Enjoying a joyride of Portuguese sauciness at… Tasca by José Avillez I don’t have a single sweet tooth in my mouth, I don’t do cakes or chocolate, what I am however, is a sauce guy. And for me Tasca is the Hogwarts of sauce-ry, in the UAE right now. The crudo cones, the brothy seafood rice dishes, José and his team have created something profoundly magical at Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai. @tascadubai – Miles Buckeridge, Deputy Editor, What’s On Dubai
Celebrating a special occasion at... Zeera by Buddha-Bar Zeera at Yas Bay is an absolute treat for Indian cuisine lovers, delectable grills and all the trimmings you expect at a fine Indian dining destination. Hey, I’m eating a sandwich here thanks to… Wise Guys When they first opened shop, the All American, mob-themed sandwiches took DIFC and the rest of Dubai by storm. The Godfather-esque sandwiches very quickly kidnapped my heart, tied it to a chair and stuffed it full of the most incredible fillings and sauces it could imagine or manage. @wiseguysdubai – Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter
Starting the week off right with a Pilates class at… Studio14 Nothing wakes you up in the morning like a full body reformer Pilates session. This week, I went to check out boutique eco-friendly Jumeirah studio, Studio14. It’s ideal for those of all fitness levels looking to switch up their workout routine in a calming environment. @studio14.ae – Tamara Wright, Online Reporter
Venturing into uncharted territory with... Steve Madden I don’t wear heels. Now, to clarify, that is not a statement of the ‘pick me’ variety. More that I’m unable to wear them and walk in a straight line. But now that I’m doing big girl things, strutting is part of the job description and strut I must. I recently added a second set, this time glittery, rose gold pumps by Steve Madden, to my possibly soon-to-be collection. Might need a box of band-aids to go with, but we don’t have to talk about that. @stevemaddenme – Manaal Fatimah, Junior Reporter 16 NOVEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
Through MY EYES
T H E UAE ACCOR D ING TO...
Kelly Hodgkin
E
ach month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their favourite places to family-friendly spots they adore, must-try restaurants and standout attractions. This month, we chat to Kelly Hodgkin (@kellymariehodgkin), renowned business mentor and entrepreneur with a passion for empowering others. Here she shares some of her favourite spots that you need on your radar. Stay at the Ski Chalet in the Kempinski Hotel MOE. It overlooks the ski slopes, has a crackling (faux) fire in the room and gives you a cosy, winter feel any time of the year. The chalet comes with its own butler and ski passes for all the guests. It never disappoints. @kempinskidubai
Nurai Island. It’s so close to Dubai, yet you feel like you could be in the Maldives. The atmosphere is personal and exclusive, and the villas are so perfect that you don’t really need to leave them. We have been six or seven times and the kids’ club and water park are brilliant for all ages. What I love most about it is that there’s something for everyone. @nurai_island
Al Jiyad Stables is a magical place for horse lovers. The animals are mostly ex-endurance and very well cared for. The sunset and sunrise desert rides are my favourite experiences. You can spot oryx and gazelles out on your trek. It’s my happy place. @aljiyadstable
Zuma has been my top spot for the last 15 years. And I rate it 100/100 in terms service, food, and atmosphere on every visit. You can count on it to impress whether you’re taking family, friends, visitors, or clients. The dish that stands out for me is the salmon and tuna tartare with caviar. @zumadubai
The Lounge Spa in Jumeirah Golf Estates. You’re greeted by the most amazing smell as soon as you walk in, so you relax instantly and forget anything that’s been bothering you. My favourite treatments are their supereffective, advanced facials. @the_lounge_spa
The Guild – DIFC. It is a fantastic concept and truly different from anywhere I have ever been in Dubai. If you are a foodie then this one’s for you! It has so many different layers to it, making it a memorable choice for dinner, drinks, date night or a girls’ night out. @theguilddubai WHATSON.AE | NOVEMBER 2023 17

Welcome to the future of travel in the capital. Abu Dhabi International Airport’s state-of-the-art new Midfield Terminal will welcome its first flights from November. Fasten your seatbelts, here’s what awaits passengers… WORDS: ALICE HOLTHAM

hen the wheels of the first suitcases hit the ground at Abu Dhabi International Airport’s Terminal A, also known as Midfield Terminal, this month, they won’t belong to the first passengers. Despite only opening its doors on November 1, Abu Dhabi’s Midfield Terminal has already been seen by millions across the globe, thanks to its starring role in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which landed in cinemas this summer. The terminal’s strikingly curvaceous roof, covering some 315 metres, provided the backdrop for one of the most exhilarating action scenes in the film. It saw 762 cast, crew and suppliers embark on seven days of intense filming production back in 2021, including lead protagonist, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise). So, it was only fitting that back in June, the Hollywood icon arrived in Abu Dhabi on the very first flight to touchdown at the terminal. Those following in his footsteps have plenty to look forward to. The new terminal covers some 742,000 square metres of built-up area, making it one of the world’s largest airport terminals. In total, some 28 airlines will transition into the airport over three phases this month, with regional carriers like Etihad, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi and Air Arabia Abu Dhabi, all flying from Terminal A. With all that extra space comes plenty of additional capacity to welcome visitors to the UAE capital. Once fully operational, it’s equipped to handle some 45 million passengers annually, processing 79 aircraft at any given time – connecting even more of the world with Abu Dhabi. Designed to make your airport experience as fuss-free as possible, Midfield Terminal leverages best-in-class technologies that feel like you’re boarding a flight to the future. A super smart interconnected biometric system will have passengers breezing through the airport formalities at Ethan-Hunt-dashing-across-the-roof speed. the-art baggage handling system have passengers covered from airport arrival until the boarding gate. Which means ample time to enjoy the facilities now found within the new terminal. On that front, the line-up is an all-box-ticking array of leisure, dining and wellness offerings that almost encourage you to miss your flight. Two health and beauty spas ensure travellers are blissfully pampered and in full vacation mode by the time they board, plus there’s a modern open-air lounge where guests can enjoy authentic Arabian hospitality. For travellers with a layover, a 138-room hotel will be a contemporary spot to rest your head. Then there’s the dining and shopping options – no less than 163 of them – that cover a full range of tastes, budgets and occasions. For luxury fashion fans, stores like Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and Ferragamo are all putting down roots in terminal. For foodies, the options range from crowd-pleasers like Starbucks and McDonald’s to regional favourites like Jones The Grocer. In a world first, Todd English will debut his first airport restaurant in Abu Dhabi, which will offer a wide selection of cuisines from around the world. But it’s not just style over substance at Midfield Terminal. In keeping with the capital’s sustainability targets, this epic beacon of aviation infrastructure has been developed with an eco-edge. Inside, you’ll find energy-efficient lighting, advanced heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. Even the building design, a modern and bright one that floods the interior with natural light, has incorporated sustainable materials in its construction. As Abu Dhabi bolsters its impressive offering for both business and leisure travellers, the city is ensuring the wow-factor begins from the second you touch down. Passports at the ready…

Could Argentinian cuisine infused with Emirati flavours be a match made in culinary heaven?
A
rgentinian steakhouse with an Emirati twist. So says the Instagram page of MouzMari, which could sum it up. A passion project for Emirati owner Madad Eissa bin Ablan Al Mazrouei, who, together with his friend Chef Sergio have transformed a small space on the waterfront of Al Reem Island into a unique concept that’s Chef Sergio been attracting locals Cabrera all summer. Looking around the restaurant, the use of space is impressive. Despite the high ceilings, the dining room has a cavernous feel, with brick and black metal archways, wooden tables and brown leather chairs – but it’s still light and bright thanks to the large windows and waterside location. As for the food, it’s a real mix of stuff, 36 NOVEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
drawn from the kitchens of Argentina, with very subtle hints of local Emirati flair, but more on that later. Some of it is marvelous. Like the fantastically light, Abu Dhabi-caught fish ceviche (Dhs86), cured with lemon and aji Amarillo leche de tigre, and topped with chives and edible flower herb oil. Or the squid ink crab empanadas (Dhs70) stuffed with melted cheese and mixed vegetables, and boldly presented on a bed of black pebbles. Anything from the butcher section gets our vote, too. You could taste the fire on the beef short ribs (Dhs248) sous vide for 24 hours then heated on coal, ostentatiously presented with a bisected bone sticking out of it. It was embarrassingly rich and excessively indulgent, but we finished the
lot. The papa gratinada (Dhs68), was a worthy side dish and resembled a crispy potato mille-feuille with some 30 waferthin layers topped with a Parmesan foam and charcoal onion ‘snow’. A few dishes go overboard in style over substance. Case in point: the sandwich de tartare (Dhs121) – a brioche sando smothered in a tidal wave of mushroom sauce and truffle shavings. Still, MouzMari does justice to Argentina’s meaty cuisine. But what of the Emirati flavours we were promised? Where were the spices, the twists, the local ingredients? We’d have liked to have tried the only Emirati-leaning dish we could find on the menu – an interesting muhammar paella (Dhs220), which, according to the description, uses Abu Dhabi-caught fish served on rice infused WHAT’S ON with Emirati spices. VERDICT A slightly missed Big steaks and opportunity for it bold flavours. If not to appear on our MouzMari could tasting menu, but then lean harder into again, a worthy reason their Emirati to return. offering, then Marina Bay 1, Al Reem this restaurant Island, daily 2pm to could be really 11pm. BRUNCH AT THE SHANGRI LA’S SOFRA BLD Enter the Gardens of Babylon, Abu Dhabi’s own gastronomic wonder
W
alk into the lobby of the Shangri La Qaryat Al Beri, alongside Abu Dhabi’s endless coastline, and you already know this is going to be an experience like none other in the capital. Your feet lead you, almost instinctively, down the stairway to the lower level of the stunning property, which houses Sofra Bld, our hosts for the afternoon. We’re here at Sofra to sample their celebrated Gardens of Babylon brunch, and a welcome beverage has us satiated en route to their bustling buffet hall. Our excitement is evident and we’re in four minutes early, while the service staff are putting the finishing touches on things, as we the admire the décor, soak in the ambiance and get acquainted with their vibrant garden theme. This unique brunch, which draws inspiration from the ancient city of Babylon, has us excited to enjoy a lavish buffet spread that includes a multitude of exciting culinary concoctions. The staff take us on a full tour of the buffet once it’s all set up, and it is beyond impressive. There
are separate stations for seafood and sushi, mezze stations, elaborate trays with over five types of caviar, a fully equipped grill and steak station, endless bread varieties, and a Mediterranean table with all of the classics. As we’re filling our plates, crowds begin to pour in and a carnivalesque energy has permeated the air. Live entertainment is aplenty. Our musicians for the afternoon, Ayele Band, have our attention and everyone else’s but it’s when the Latin dancers and their skilled percussionist take to the floor that things get truly festive. Colour, fervour and beats take over as guests sit back and enjoy the entertainment, and after being whisked away a few minutes later, we’re told they’ll make an appearance every hour during the three-hour brunch experience. This is vibrance in all its glory. Our plates are decked with marinated salmon, sushi rolls, and varieties of mezze, including the beetroot moutabbal, one of our own favourites. That said, we’re compelled to go all out with our seafood
indulgence today, and the tiger prawns are to savour. At the end of two refills, we have just enough space to descend on the dessert table, with several flavours (and colours) of artisanal ice cream demanding to be consumed. The Gardens of Babylon experience at Sofra Bld also allows guests to enjoy a buffet-like experience with their beverages of choice, a unique spin on brunch that we’re introduced to for the first time. The Gardens of Babylon brunch overlooks the Qaryat Al Beri’s pool and the vastness of the city, with a magnificent backdrop of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. As we depart all kinds of happy, a rendition of the Eagles’ Hotel California rings out. Except, this is Hotel Shangri-La in Abu Dhabi, and we highly recommend you enjoy the sensory celebration that is the WHAT’S ON Gardens of Babylon. DAIKAN IZAKAYA
A homegrown success story making all the right moves
F
rom humble beginnings in Dubai’s JLT, this family-owned business has fast become one of the UAE’s most beloved homegrown, independent success stories. While this personality-packed eatery is adored for its soulful bowls of Japanese ramen, when the brand expanded into Abu Dhabi’s Yas Bay in December 2021, its menu offering expanded too, paving the way for Daikan Ramen to become Daikan Izakaya in the capital. The Yas Bay iteration, sitting neatly in a row of restaurants on The Pier that includes other Dubai exports like La Carnita and Asia Asia, is more grown-up looking than its 10-table original in JLT. Daikan’s first licensed outpost has the feel of a sleek izakaya that wouldn’t look out of place in the bustling streets of Tokyo, with its long wood and marble tables that encourage social dining, each neatly rowed with wooden bar stools. It might feel cold or industrial if it weren’t for a huge bookshelf that fills almost the entire back wall, which is laden with vinyls and coffee table books that further adds to the brand personality. There’s also a lovely outdoor area that overlooks the Yas Waterfront, which we eye-up longingly before concluding it’s still too hot for alfresco daytime dining.
38 NOVEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
The menu is now much bigger than the hearty broth-based bowls that made it a staple on the Dubai dining scene, but pleasantly most of its price points have remained in the comfortably affordable bracket. Upon recommendation, we pick something from most of the sections, with dishes arriving as they’re ready, a format that’s divisive, but one we personally enjoy. From the small plates, we order the shitake mushroom gyozas (Dhs42) and miso aubergine (Dhs35), both of which must be applauded for their portion size. A half dozen plump gyozas are flavourful and have a perfectly crispy skirt, while we love the melt-in-the-mouth texture of the miso aubergine, topped with smoked bonito flakes to give a little crunch to each bite. The spicy Korean wings are a steal at just Dhs35,
and a plate of four have impressive meatto-bone ratio, coated in a spicy sauce that’s nicely balanced by a bowl of cooling ranch. From the sushi section, order the build-your-own nori tacos (Dhs61), which arrive deconstructed so you can create your own mix from a bowl of spicy salmon tartare, pickled cucumber, avocado, onion, tobiko and ikura. It’s an invite to get a bit messy that we don’t need to consider twice, diving straight in to create our own mini nori tacos. Our only complaint is there aren’t enough nori pieces to eat up all the ingredients presented in front of us. There’s no dish we don’t like, but the standout undoubtedly comes from the charcoal grill, a pair of piping hot Wagyu steak skewers (Dhs62). Simply seasoned with WHAT’S ON salt, it lets the organic VERDICT flavour of the tender A natural Wagyu sing. evolution of the Daikan Izakaya, Daikan brand, The Pier, Yas Bay affordability and Waterfront, Yas Island, quality aren’t 12pm to 12am Sun compromised to Thurs, 12pm to at this grown2am Fri and Sat. up iteration of a Tel: (0)58 124 1529. DINNER TIME AT LEBANESE TERRACE
Get set for lovely flavours and royalty-sized portions…
D
inner time is here, and we find ourselves at the ultra-luxe Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental’s Lebanese Terrace, drinking in the regalia of this stunning property in the UAE’s capital. On a serene weekday evening, the crowds are yet to pack in as we’re promptly seated in a cosy corner and presented with our food and beverage options for the evening. Our meal shifts into gear with our beverage of choice, the Baklava Punch (Dhs80), with an iceberg sitting neatly at its centre. Served with authentic baklava rolls to taste and garnished with sliced pistachio, this is an innovative concoction that neatly
carries the essence of the region. Just make sure you request a straw prior to getting started. Service is prompt. Fast, really. In minutes our condiments arrive, soaked almonds and a savoury sauce, and with them a creamy, beautifully textured lentil soup (Dhs65). Croutons complement its texture perfectly, and we’re unable to look up from this brilliant bowl. We move on to our starter with the halloumi pomegranate salad (Dhs120), which arrives in a bowl of majestic proportions. Lebanese Terrace does not compromise on portion sizes, so make sure you’re not dining solo. Generous greens, squeaky, grilled cubes of halloumi, succulent pomegranate, and crunchy walnuts are in perfect harmony
amid tastebud-puckering dressing. Just another reminder that premium dining establishments in the capital are constantly upping their starter game. Melodic Arabic and Mediterranean tunes flood a thinly filled space, as we’re served our main for the night, a grilled shish taouk (Dhs160). This classic is the big highlight of our dinner, its texture perfect and served with house-made garlic sauce that makes its freshness felt the moment it touches your palate. It’s also worlds away from the bottle-poured garlic dip your run-of-the-mill eatery will deliver in a brown paper bag. We wrap things up with a hearty cheese kunafa (Dhs90), liquid sugar drizzled atop for taste. This year, during its 15th iteration, Abu Dhabi Art is displaying work from over 92 leading and emerging galleries from 31 countries as well as featuring a curatorially driven programme, including art installations, talks and performances taking place in different locations, making this its most comprehensive and diverse to date. 44 NOVEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
Exhibiting Galleries Each year, participating exhibitors are handpicked by an internal committee at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi. This year, the international modern and contemporary galleries chosen will present a wide range of pieces for sale by different artists, with each gallery choosing to focus on a difference angle. The focus sectors this year are ‘sustainability’, ‘Arab women artists’, ‘Latin America’, ‘Hong Kong’, ‘modern & contemporary’, ‘emerge’, and ‘special projects’. Art enthusiasts, collectors and visitors can meet exhibitors representing galleries from across the globe, including SC Gallery in Hong Kong, Mexico’s Pablo Goebel Fine Arts, Selma Feriani Gallery in Tunisia and Saudi Arabia’s Hafez Gallery.

Beyond Emerging Artists This annual Beyond: Emerging Artists initiative gives three emerging UAE artists a platform to realise ambitious art projects, where their works will be shown at Manarat Al Saadiyat as part of Abu Dhabi Art. This year’s Beyond Emerging artists are Almaha Jaralla, Latifa Saeed, and Samo Shalaby curated by art historian, publisher, and curator, Morad Montazami.
MUSIC AND TALKS During the fair, Abu Dhabi Art also hosts a series of cultural talks, plus site-specific performances commissioned in different locations throughout the city. Highlights include performances by Nujoom Al Ghanem, Bait Al Gahwa, DJ BCM and DJ Ukiyo, among others.
Visual Campaign Artist Each year, Abu Dhabi Art collaborates with artists for a visual campaign that sets the tone for the entire fair. For 2023, renowned Emirati artist Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim was selected. He is part of the UAE’s first generation of contemporary artists from the late 1980s, whose work has been inspired by a lifelong relationship with the environment of Khorfakkan, his place of birth.
Samo Shalaby
“This year’s Abu Dhabi Art represents a significant moment in the fair’s history due to its sheer size, with double the number of galleries participating since its early days. The presence of so many new galleries at the Fair signifies how dynamic the local and regional art market has become over the last 15 years.” – Dyala Nusseibeh, Director of Abu Dhabi Art
Abu Dhabi Art invites established artists to create site-specific works in historic sites in Al Ain and the wider Abu Dhabi emirate to draw new audiences. The works created by the commissioned artists are revealed during Abu Dhabi Art fair and remain on show to the public for two months. This year sees special projects from Italian multi-disciplinary artist Marinella Senatore at Manarat Al Saadiyat and Al Hosn, alongside commissioned works by Abdullah Al Saadi, plus special pieces from Nujoom Al Ghanem, and Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim.
Nujoom Al Ghanem
NOURI AT THE FROZEN FOREST Returning to the fair this year is a special exhibition curated by Nicolas Bourriaud, which investigates the relationship between the visual and culinary arts. The long, roundabout version will have you taking a deep, potentially no-returnstyle dive into the world of K-Pop. some context, the landscape of K-Pop is dominated by groups – crews that can go up to seventeen or more members. These groups can do just about everything. Singing? Of course. Dancing? You haven’t seen better. Setting global trends and pulling in millions of screaming fans? You best believe it. The production value of the K-Pop experience is what makes it stand apart. It shines a spotlight on them that showcasing their incredible stage set-ups, their coordinated costumes, their continued love of hair dye and their ability to perform high-octane choreography without missing a single beat, all while belting out hits for hours on end. It’s a spectacle, with a formula. Hyperound K-Fest, the capital’s offering of this magic, is the evidence of it all. Coming to the Etihad Arena on November 11 for one night only, the second edition of this festival is all set to bring forth that K-Pop experience in epic proportions. The line-up is an impressive entourage of young, big and boldly authentic acts that, if there’s a playing field, are the competition. Boybands, girl groups and solo stars – the mix is eclectic and not just in terms of the artist variety. Last year saw 10 of the biggest sensations across different genres, including pop and hip-hop, and this year is no different. Whether you’re firmly planted into the K-fandom, or just looking to take your baby steps in, this is a night you don’t want to miss. Get your tickets now…
CENTRE STAGE
The names of the game this year…
1. Epik High Hip-hop trio Epik High has been riding the scene since 2001, having released several commercially successful albums and establishing themselves as one of the leading hip-hop acts in the country. Their music is heavily inspired by social issues.
3. Sunmi Solo performer Sunmi needs no introduction, especially if one knows their K-Pop onions. Starting off in a girl group back in 2007, she went solo in 2013 and has since been acing the game as a singer, songwriter, and record producer. Consider her a legend of sorts.
5. Cherry Bullet Another septet, this girl group originally had 10 members. Cherry Bullet is all about that bubblegum-teendance pop and has garnered much popularity since their debut in 2019, with a reality show created especially for their launch.
2. XG Surprisingly, this sevenmember girl group is actually Japanese, which is not uncommon in the Korean arts world (there are loads of performers hailing from overseas). Relative new kids on the block, they made their debut in 2022.
4. ENHYPEN ENHYPEN is part of the newer crop of massively popular K-Pop boybands that are taking the world by storm right now. Featuring seven members, the group is the poster of the full-frills, supercharged K-Pop showcase.
6. DPR Ian Like many, Christian Yu, also known as DPR Ian, started off in a boyband. The Australian singer, rapper, and director made his solo debut in 2020 under his own co-founded label, Dream Perfect Regime or DPR. Along with fellow artist Live, also part of his label, he became one of the first Korean artists to create music for a Marvel soundtrack album with Diamonds + and Pearls from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
7. Peakboy The rapper, record producer and singer-songwriter has been in the industry since 2017, having uploaded his debut single on SoundCloud. He dabbles in hip-hop, R&B and electronic genres and has three albums to his name. DPR Ian

bu Dhabi, get set to welcome the FIM World Supercross Championships (WSX) on November 4 and 5 at the Etihad Arena, as the inaugural Abu Dhabi edition of this gripping Grand Prix is finally here. It will kick off the capital’s thrill-filled motorsport season, backed by adrenalinecharged excitement, electrifying pyrotechnics and jaw-dropping stunts that promise to have fans on their feet. But what is Supercross? At the epicentre of dirt-strewn colosseums, engines roar and an adrenaline-fuelled world of extreme athleticism and death-defying stunts comes to life. Supercross, the high-flying motorsport sensation, has 50 NOVEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
captivated audiences around the world, in showcasing a brilliant blend of precision, athleticism and a certain X (short for extreme?) factor that only daredevils possess, to bring you the show of a lifetime. As they strap on their helmets, pull on their gloves and rev the throttle knowing uncertainty looms large, supercross riders bring you a work of art that you’ve likely never seen before. Intricately crafted courses feature chilling challenges that require the riders to harness courage, skill and the will to match mind with machine to overcome every obstacle they face. What might initially seem like highpowered chaos will eventually begin to make sense, as you begin to gain a deeper understanding of the sport and what it takes for the rider, nay, the artist to put on the show that they do. Discipline, patience and timing need to be in perfect harmony so the rider and the ride can be one, with the dirt bike almost an extension of the rider’s own physique. With style, personality and finesse headlining the stunts, turns and leaps you witness, rider and ride are both pushed to the limits time and time again, with no compromise on the spirit of competition that powers them to take to the dirt over and over again. This is a world like none other, even for the most seasoned adrenaline junkie. All the world might be a stage, but behind the curtains lie techs and mechs who make all of it possible, ensuring the machinery that eventually takes a beating to bring you a show of a lifetime is in prime condition before, during and after every show. Riders perform daring feats, one after the other, sometimes victorious, other times letting gravity bring them back down to earth. Precision, practice and a skill level developed through years of training sketch the blurred lines between pain and gain. Abu Dhabi is about to witness a spectacle that has traversed the planet, both in terms of events staged as well as the talent it has attracted. Riders from around the world bring their signature styles, skill levels and personalities to the dirt, and they’ll be thrilling us, right here in the capital. CARLOS MENDEZ
This spiritual guru is now a lauded yoga and Pilates teacher at the Bodytree Studio
When did you realise you wanted to be an instructor? I guess, all my life, I have been an instructor for something. In college, I was a tutor teaching maths. As an engineer, I trained my team on new equipment. When the time came to choose a new path, it was an easy transition into the world of health and wellbeing. I love to pass knowledge to new students; to improve their lives, and see them change. I believe being a teacher is my reason for living. You teach lots of different classes. Which provides the toughest workout? HIIT has to be the toughest in any modality. You can do it on a bike, dancing, reformer Pilates, anything. Just doing interval training in the right way can turn the simplest discipline into the toughest workout.
What sets Bodytree Studio apart from other studios? I see Bodytree as the centre of high-quality knowledge. Bodytree has valuable experts in many areas. Each class is a learning experience for everyone. You can learn so much about your body and it’s a fantastic place to train your mind, body and improve your well-being. What’s on your playlist? I have an eclectic taste – I shuffle between all genres of music. Right now, I love intricate, complicated music. There’s a wonderful choir I’m really into at the moment called Voces8. It’s so emotive. Carlos teaches Animal Flow yoga and Pilates at Bodytree throughout the week. @carlosfit4life
NADER MUSHARBASH
Swapping Glastonbury’s main stage for gut-busting personal training, this hardcore personal trainer is ready to make you hurl What sets you apart from other personal trainers in the city? For me, it’s not just about the physique, it’s the mindset. I train your mind as well as your body so that you are able to take on everyday life fresh and ready to tackle life’s hurdles. How would others describe a PT session with you? Clients would say that I help them show up and become accountable for themselves. By pushing them physically and mentally, I drive discipline, so their mind is as strong as their body. It does mean most throw up in their first few sessions as they get to grips with the intensity. I like to start with shocking the body and pushing my clients to see how far they go, which helps me understand their weak and strong points. It’s a little militant, but my workouts come with a twist of good humour and character. And by the end of the session, how do clients usually feel – still queasy? By the end my clients feel empowered and loved that their session was so different from what they’re used to. Although my workouts are tough, they are fun and creative. What’s your favourite restaurant in Abu Dhabi? Nando’s – anywhere in the world. I’ve even got my clients onto it. Random fact about you... I was a professional dancer and choreographer for twenty years. I’ve performed around the world, including on Glastonbury’s main stage to over 100,000 people with Rita Ora. Nader offers personal training sessions across the city and throughout the week. @nader_m316

Get ready for a vicious cycle with this pizza-obsessed trainer at Crank Do you remember your first time going to a Crank class? I’ll never forget it. I went in thinking it was just going to be a regular workout, but I felt euphoric after. The staff at reception instantly made me feel welcome and the instructor was so helpful. How would you describe a class there? Extraordinary. Its layout and lighting are so unique – you honestly can’t find that anywhere else. The dark room makes it easy for you to stay focused and escape reality for 45 minutes. The instructors speak from the heart and teach from the heart – but we also have a beautiful community. A big part of the reason I got hooked on Crank as a client before becoming an instructor was because of how safe I felt.
Away from Crank, where do you like to work out? My love for fitness goes way back. I love it all – lifting weights, swimming, boxing, dancing, the list goes on. But honestly, if I’m not scheduled to teach a class I’m training at Crank – I love getting competitive and seeing my name on the scoreboard. Do you have a favourite restaurant in Abu Dhabi? If you know me, you know I love my pizza. I probably mention Domino’s and Flat Pizzeria at least a thousand times in my classes. So, where are you when you’re not working? This is a funny one, as my work requires a lot of physical movement. So, when I’m not working or working out, I choose to live a very sedentary life. I’m probably on my couch watching Netflix or I’m at the beach frying myself under the sun. However, on payday, we go shopping.
Random fact about you... No matter how active I know I’m going to be throughout the day, I will never skip out on a morning walk. Mia runs Crank sessions in Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Park on Mondays at 7am and 4.30am, Tuesday at 4.30pm, Wednesdays at 6am and 7am, Friday at 4.30pm and 5.30pm, Saturday at 10.30am and Sunday at 10.30am and 12.30pm. @mias.fitness
BRAD ROBINSON
When he’s not building muscles of his own, he’s coaching at F45 helping clients reach their peak fitness When did you realise you wanted to be an F45 trainer? As soon as I got to know what the F45 family stands for. The community feeling within every class and the genuine passion shown by the coaches and members alike – that’s when I knew I wanted to be part of the team. How would others describe a class with you? Always fun and motivational with top-tier tunes. What is your favourite part about being an F45 trainer? The interaction with the members, getting to know the F45 community from across the world and meeting new people every week. I am a real people person and I feel like I can shine in this role. Away from F45 where do you like to work out? I am slightly obsessed with Warehouse Gym at Yas Bay. I’m a bodybuilder at heart and Warehouse has everything I need.
54 NOVEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
Do you have a favourite restaurant in the city? More of a cafe than a restaurant, but I do love Art Market at Yas Bay. I could eat their eggs royale for breakfast, lunch and dinner and never get tired of it. Random fact about you... I once played Billy Flynn in my school’s production of Chicago – I love musical theatre and singing, although mainly in the shower these days. PATRICK “THE IRISH WIZARD’ DOHERTY
A formidable force in the boxing world, Patrick now heads up coaching at Khabib Gym
Khabib Gym is a new space in Abu Dhabi. What makes it special? The Khabib Gym is a facility like no other. The name obviously speaks for itself and so do the facilities. The last time I worked and trained in a place like this was when I won the Irish National Championship for boxing when I was training at the National Performance Centre in Ireland. How do you think boxing compares to other exercises? Boxing is my life. I live, eat, and breathe it. I first fell in love with it because of its natural ability to relieve stress when I was a boy, but as I’ve grown older and shared my passion with people across the world I’ve realised it’s much more than that. I also think it’s the best form of self-defense and brings communities together with it being a universal language in so many different countries. What does it take to be a great boxer? The ability to focus under pressure and love for hard work.
What does a session with you look like? As most of our members at Khabib Gym will tell you, I usually warm them up to some sort of Rocky song then it’s onto conditioning. I like to think I’m tough but fair with my students. Boxing by nature is a tough sport, so I try to give them the tools that can carry them through, whether that be mental or physical challenges. Where are you when you’re not in the gym? I’m either recovering in the pool or in our newly added ice baths that we have at the gym. Yes, even when I’m not working in there, I’m there. I do tend to spend my weekends with my girlfriend after a long week of working/training. Random fact about you? I’ve always fancied myself as a bit of an actor. There could be a career in it for me after my boxing days are over. Patrick runs private boxing lessons and group classes at Khabib Gym. @patsboxing
ENRIQUE GONZÁLEZ
This Latino globe-trotter is ready to put you through your paces in the Red Room at Barry’s When did you realise you wanted to be an instructor? My whole life has been about sports and fitness. I love to share my passion for sports and a healthy lifestyle, so I believe that it’s something that’s always just been within me. What is your favourite thing about being a Barry’s instructor? Barry’s is a one-of-a-kind concept that allows you to engage more with people and inspire them to achieve the best version of themselves. I would say that the community that we build in Barry’s is unique and that’s what I love the most. What do you have on your playlist? I describe my playlist as a mix of Latin music and remixes of popular songs. I love music that most people know; songs that remind them of beautiful moments in their lives. Do you have a particular standout class memory? Yes, I will always remember my first Barry’s class. I was very excited and nervous at the same time. I probably made some mistakes but people were so nice and the feedback was so positive. When you’re not working or working out, where are you? If it’s my cheat day, you’ll find me in a restaurant eating a big burger. If it’s not my cheat day, I love going to the beach or pool when the weather is good, reading books or in the cinema watching a good movie. Random fact about you... I have lived in seven different countries in the last 10 years. Enrique runs Barry’s sessions on Mondays at 7.15pm, Tuesdays at 12.30pm and 3.30pm, Fridays at 3pm and 5pm, and Saturday at 11am and 12.30pm. @enriqueglez7

Radisson RED Tbilisi
Where to stay Radisson Red Tbilisi
In keeping with the cool and playful tone of the Radisson RED brand, Radisson RED Tbilisi brings together a blend of the past and future. In the room, you will find standout elements from days gone by, from a red rotary phone to a large decorative panel above the bed showcasing correspondence letters of a Georgian public figure – a sweet ode to the post office. Outside the hotel, the avenue, which bears a 19thcentury classical architecture style, is dotted with cafes, restaurants, a 24-hour grocery store and there’s a souvenir store right opposite the hotel for that lastminute shopping before you depart. The best news? The hotel is also pet-friendly so you can bring your cat or dog with you on your Tbilisi adventure. Room rates start from Dhs428 per night in November. radissonhotels.com
Nestled in the heart of the city, at first glance, the newly opened Radisson RED Tbilisi doesn’t seem to slot neatly into its surrounds. Standing out baring an almost-museum-worthy architecture, the hotel set up home in a 100-yearold former post office building which is considered a cultural heritage monument on the iconic Davit Aghmashenebeli Avenue. The post office, also previously a residential house, dates back to the 1920s. It was one of the many houses and buildings with historical importance that underwent renovations as part of the government-led, citywide New Tiflis project, tasked with transforming the city. Now, it is home to 111 chic rooms and suites combining historic elements and bold designs.
Take a walking tour of Tbilisi, Georgia If you’re visiting Tbilisi for a short trip, here are five spots you must not miss Bridge of Peace An attraction that’s hard to ignore in the heart of the city is the Bridge of Peace. The pedestrian bridge stands out thanks to its blue hue and has a unique contemporary bow-shaped design. But don’t just admire it from afar. Step on the bridge for some of the prettiest views of Tbilisi and get from the historic old town of Tbilisi to Rike Park for some more exploring. During the weekends and at night, performers fil the air with music, and every day just before sunset, the bridge twinkles beautifully when the 10,000 LED light bulbs are switched on.
Sulphur Baths
Tbilisi Cable Car This is ‘how we met the Mother’. Head to the Tbilisi Cable Car and once you’re at the top, you’ll also be treated to beautiful views of Tbilisi, including the Mother of Georgia. Here, you can also explore the fortress of Narikala, which served as a military stronghold throughout Tbilisi’s many military conflicts – another visceral emblem of the city’s resilience. Heading back? You can use the marked hiking paths to make your way back down, or hop back on the cable cars.
Sulphur Baths Did you know that Tbilisi derives from the Old Georgian word ’Tbili,’ which means warm, and it extends beyond the hospitality of the cobblestoned old town. The site of the city features a dense network of naturally occurring sulfuric hot springs, which were often used as baths, and it was for this reason that an ancient King of Georgia decided to put a defensive ring around it and establish a formal settlement. Visitors can head to any of the central public baths for a soak, scrub and a massage under the domed roofs. The alleged medicinal properties of the water are said to help with a number of skin problems, arthritic pains, and more. You won’t have to look hard to find them, just keep your eyes peeled for brown brick domes.
Mother of Georgia
The Leaning Clock Tower
The Leaning Clock Tower
Mother of Georgia Whether you get the chance to visit Mother of Georgia up close or not, don’t worry. She’s always watching you from atop of Sololaki hill. Also known as Kartlis Deda, this monument was erected in 1958. Baring the Georgian national dress, she holds in her left hand a bowl of wine to greet those who come as friends, and in her right hand is a sword for those who come as enemies. It is a testament to the spirit of Georgians and their determination to preserve their identity.
GETTING THERE flydubai flies from Dubai to Tbilisi thrice daily from Dhs1,385. flydubai.com
Created by the renowned Georgian puppeteer Rezo Gabriadze, the leaning clock tower stands out as one of the city’s most unusual buildings. It leans to one side and is ‘propped’ up by an iron column. If you time your visit just right, on the hour a screen pops open and an angel strikes the bell.
