EDITOR’S LETTER
IT’S BEEN A PRETTY SPECIAL YEAR IN ABU DHABI
EDITOR’S PICKS
Red reindeer pyjamas, Next Dhs39 to Dhs125, next.ae
Of all the years I’ve been in the UAE, this one really stands out to me. I think 2023 will be remembered as the year where Abu Dhabi really showed people what it’s about. The memorable concerts, the fabulous festivals, the incredible sporting events. Plus all the new restaurant openings, and thrilling announcements about future projects that will keep making this city one of the world’s most exciting destinations to visit and live in. Abu Dhabi really brought it over the last 11 months. But there’s still one month remaining, and it’s probably my favourite month of the year. I love the holiday season. It’s the perfect excuse to get together with friends, to check out the city’s myriad festive events, ogle at the beautifully decorated hotels, and marvel at the twinkling lights that illuminate the capital. And as it has done all through the year, Abu Dhabi is set to deliver in spades this December. For all things festive, head to p17, where we’ve got our ultimate guide to where to spend those key Christmas days. But even away from the magic of the holiday season, Abu Dhabi has plenty to see and do this month. It’s the perfect temperature for dreamy desert days, and there’ll be entertainment, dining and shopping aplenty with the return of Liwa Village from December 8. Everything you need to know is from p25. Plus, a perennial favourite in the capital is back with the return of the beloved Mother of the Nation festival, bigger and better than ever before this year. Discover all you need to know from p29. Wishing you a wonderful festive season,

WHAT’S ON Getting my fill of authentic Turkish food at… Sirali
Showing support with... CPTN Shirts
There are a handful of people’s restaurant recommendations I trust above all others, and one of those in the circle, is my friend Nazli. She raves about the authentic Turkish food at Sirali, and so I had to go and check it out. Located in Habtoor City, it’s warm and inviting, just like the ever-hospitable owner, Fadi, who makes every guest feel like they’re special. The portions are generous, and the flavours are fantastic. @siralikebapdubai
This homegrown brand is usually my first stop when the midlife crisis shirt wardrobe needs a re-up, but their latest piece – the Keffiyeh Watermelon, resonates on a level far beyond the usual merry mix of tropical plants and paisley blooms. They’re donating Dhs100 from the sale of each Dhs250 piece to Emirates Red Crescent, to help fund the ongoing relief efforts. There is no freedom until we’re all free. @cptn_dxb

Satisfying my spice craving at… Yoko Sizzlers
Not spilling the tea with… Newby
Things I crave when it starts getting cold: hot pot, hot karak, and a piping hot sizzler from Yoko. As soon as the temp changes, I become obsessed with their Yoko chicken special – two spicy fillets of chicken on a bed of rice and vegetables and fries topped with a fiery sauce. It all arrives at the table on a sizzling plate, ensuring hot food and satisfying ASMR. @yokodubai
If you’re a tea connoisseur that is constantly looking to unravel an incredible new flavour, Newby is your brand. Pick from three categories, including their speciality teas, rare teas and ultra-rare teas, and flavours such as their Royal Kahwa, the Delicate Oolong and the Gulshan. You’ll be tipping the teapot in record time. @newbyteas

Taking up a new hobby thanks to… Tabchilli
Giving my skin a muchneeded boost at… Biolite
I’ve always been a little apprehensive about Kombucha. But with homegrown kings of the fermented chilli paste, Tabchilli recently dropping their own cloudy brew – the time felt right to take the plunge. I will report back on the taste, fizz and overall feel of kombucha in good time. @tabchilli
Biolite is one of my favourite wellness escapes in the city, located in Umm Suqeim in the heart of Jumeirah. This week I tried one of their magic facials: the injectable skin boosters – essentially micro-injections of hyaluronic acid into the face. The results were immediately visible: smoother, hydrated, glowing skin togo. @bioliteuae

Through MY EYES
T H E UAE ACCOR D ING TO...
Keith Dallison aka Santa Claus
E
ach month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their favourite places to family-friendly spots they adore, must-try restaurants and standout attractions. This month, we chat to the real Santa Claus (@santa_claus_kd) who will of course be coming to town this month. Here, he shares some of his favourite spots to visit with Mrs. Claus and his elves in the UAE.
Maisan15 is a cosy, friendly cafe that is unlike anything else in Dubai. Mrs. Claus and I go there for a chilled breakfast. Chef Rita creates everything from organic ingredients and it’s simply scrumptious. Maybe I should not be mentioning it here, because then it’ll not be such a hidden gem anymore... ho ho ho. @maisan15
My favorite staycation is Atlantis, The Palm, simply because I find myself enjoying all the fantastical fun filled activities like Aquaventure, The Lost Chambers, and those friendly sea lions, guess I’m still a big kid at heart. I’ll be there this Christmas for sure. @atlantisthepalm
The most festive places are where you find Christmas cheer – it comes from the heart of everyone and those special moments they create. Being Santa, I make it my mission to share that sentiment, so wherever you find me, you’ll find the Christmas spirit.
My chill zone is to take a paddle board at sunrise from Ignite Water Sports and head out around Palm Jumeirah. Out there on the water, I find it’s the most peaceful and natural way to recharge my zen after all the noise and bustle of the workshop. Elves can be quite noisy you know! @ignitewatersports
For our special nights out, Mrs. Claus and I head to Orfali Bros Bistro. It is an imaginative cuisine that sums up the essence of Dubai. Chef Mohamad and his brothers blend together a tantalising experience inspired by the sophisticated multicultural vibe of the city. It’s sheer magical genius and we like magic. @orfalibros_bistro
December is my busiest and yet favourite month simply because I get to engage with lots of children in Dubai. Christmas activities like gingerbread house making and decorating, talking about the latest toys and sharing festive stories, seeing their happy faces is what makes it all extremely worthwhile. here’s a world beyond the city limits, a virtually uninhabited desert, approximately 150 kilometres southwest of Abu Dhabi. You might stumble upon the odd verdant oasis between the magnificent mountainous dunes, a wandering camel perhaps or weekending off-roaders, but for much of the year, it remains a vast and quiet landscape. All of that changes this month as Abu Dhabi’s Liwa Village Festival makes its welcome return. Taking place from December 8 to 31, this mini-oasis city weaves together authentic Emirati heritage with ‘made for Instagram’ activities, exciting culinary kiosks, live music and a splash of urban fashion. Here’s a look at what’s going on…
26 DECEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
SOUK Chanelling the energy of the UAE’s history is the ‘Souk’ district, a heritage area within Liwa Village, built to resemble traders’ homes topped by traditional wind towers. You’ll find various dining options and live Emirati cooking demonstrations, retail outlets, an on-site spice market, henna painting, workshops focusing on traditional crafts and techniques, and an enchanting rooftop restaurant that overlooks the entire village.
MAIN STAGE
CARNIVAL Welcome to the family-friendly zone, a neon-lit amusement park with a carousel, trampolines, virtual reality fun, street performers, fairground games, and a general sense of ‘step right up!’ revelry.
OASIS Exactly as it sounds, the Oasis is Liwa Village’s chill zone. Find a sofa to relax with friends before ordering some grub from a local kiosk. Last year’s options included Emirati-owned burger hotspot High Joint, among others including Let’s Café, Culinary Boutique and DRVN, so expect much of the same this year.
PAVILION Liwa Village’s answer to Expo 2020’s Wasl Dome, Pavilion is in the heart of the festival. A serene and tranquil environment, encompassed in greenery, serves as a picturesque rest-stop.
The biggest zone in Liwa Village is also the loudest. Last year, the Main Stage hosted live performances, which had a largely Arabian flavour, with special shows from talented regional artists as Abdullah Ruwaished, Khaled Al Mulla, Abadi Al Johar, and Mutref Al Mutref. There was, of course, an enormous curveball last year with a special performance from multi-award-winning American rapper Ludacris. The musical roster for this edition is still under wraps, but organisers promise a “thrilling line-up of performances across four weekends featuring A-list talents, both regional and global”, so be sure to keep an eye out on whatson.ae for the latest.
NYE CELEBRATIONS In search of the antithesis of a luxury hotel NYE gala dinner this year? Consider heading for the dunes on December 31 as Liwa Village rounds out the festival by ringing in the New Year with an as-yet undisclosed concert, and a breathtaking fireworks display.

MR. MOTO Yas Marina’s new Japanese eatery makes its mark
A
mid Abu Dhabi’s first thunderstorm of the winter, we’re relieved to step into Mr. Moto on picturesque Yas Marina. We come hungry, and excited, expectations high for a multitude of lip-smacking flavours to make every last thunderclap a distant memory. In a space of Japanese cultural icons, intimate booths, smiling service staff and an incredibly knowledgeable sommelier, we grab a seat before one look at Mr. Moto’s menu has us pleasantly surprised. Despite the location, most of these super specials are priced at a little over what you’d be shelling out for a run of the mill cheeseburger combo. Which is great news, since it allows for us to be introduced to 34 DECEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
an array of smartly-portioned bites. The Japanese are big on minimising waste, and that is evident at Mr. Moto. Sticky calamari (Dhs43) makes it way to our table, a beautiful mix of this popular seafood favourite and a spicy sauce. The secret’s in the sauce, and you’re tucking in to a brand new snack. Despite the diversity of flavours and offerings on the menu, we’re the kind of people who believe a trip to a Japanese restaurant without sampling their sushi would be a shame. We order the tuna sushi (Dhs21), dry, delicate, almost jelly-like. The authentic sushi lover gets what they come for. We’re tempted to take things up a notch on the Scoville scale, and order plates of the Nashville karaage, with spicy sauce, taste-bud puckering pickles and good old ranch sauce. At Dhs38, this is a deal to savour, and one snack you don’t want to miss out on. Sink your teeth into these wonders once you’ve bathed them generously in ranch. We’re starting to have fun with the fireand-ice effect, and almost synonymously,
lightning makes an appearance. Flash all you want out there, but our attention is firmly on what’s happening on our plate. We move on to the shishito peppers (Dhs21): jalapenos, yuzu-kosko Mayo and ginger that arrive on a neat dish as we let a cooling beverage coat our palates in anticipation. Strangely, we’re not breathing fire. The trick is to chew along the skin and avoid the seeds. It’s funny how you can try dish after dish at Mr. Moto and not feel remotely full yet be strangely satiated. The Tokyo street corn (Dhs28) has us strolling the streets of the Japanese capital, lightly seasoned and bursting with flavour. To round things off, we’re strongly recommended the baby gem gomae (Dhs32), a healthful heap of WHAT’S ON salad with anchovies, VERDICT sesame dressing and Mr. Moto katsuobushi. Bringing together wine connoisseurs in the capital, a 200-plus strong guestlist packed the airy alfresco terrace of the stunning five-star property to enjoy sips, bites and engaging conversation around all things grape. Lovely November weather and the gorgeous Al Maryah Island served as the ideal backdrop for the evening. Guests enjoyed a fun-filled Friday night with a stunning selection of premium wines, cheeses, and
cold cuts at a wonderful walletfriendly experience to kick off the weekend. Attendees comprised both newcomers to the wine world as well as seasoned pros, as nine beautifully decked-out counters served up an array of red, white, rosé and sparkling. Guests also enjoyed and learned about great grape varieties, vineyards and regions, at a cheerfilled experience that had one and all raising their glasses at What’s On’s first dedicated celebration of wines in the capital. We extend our thanks to all those that helped make the evening such a fabulous success, and look forward to welcoming you to our next wine night.

BROADWAY, EMIRATES PALACE MANDARIN ORIENTAL Does this restaurant make a high-impact debut?
I
f a restaurant is supposed to transport you somewhere, then Broadway is a hop, skip and an Emirates Palace taxi ride to New York City. Think blinding lights, yellow Ford taxi cabs, copies of the Wall Street Journal and for fans of caped crusaders, Gotham City. The latest addition to this palatial address has arrived, bringing a slice of the Big Apple to the UAE capital. It seems like every time we visit this regal hotel, there’s something new to see. As we head through the doors of its latest offering, Broadway, we’re greeted by prompt service staff clad in hues of showmanship, in neatly pressed pants and deep reds akin to curtains flanking a Broadway stage. But that isn’t all. Stop by and appreciate their vinyl collection. Head down the hallway and be greeted by
the ultimate hitmaker, a jukebox. The show begins the moment you arrive, and carries on through the night. We sit down on a brisk Friday afternoon, the first day of business, and are recommended a beautiful selection of handy bar snacks and refreshing beverages to combat the seaside mugginess. We’re quick to order the Broadway sliders (Dhs95), which are presented as a trio of toasted buns, each filled with crispy chicken, fish fingers and aged beef. Our favourite is undoubtedly the crispy chicken, but all three go down well. Our server also recommends the blooming onion (Dhs50), a greasy, crunchy hit with carnival and pub goers, served with classic barbecue sauce. If you want barbecue to play the lead, don’t miss out on the Broadway fried chicken (Dhs80), that appears with a side of tamarind BBQ sauce. Great flavour and very tender. Other specials on the Broadway
menu include the escargots (Dhs95) with a rich garlic butter; as well as the USDA prime New York strip (Dhs320), cooked just the way we like it and well seasoned. For beverages, we’re served the sweet, sour and slightly salty Brick Me In (Dhs80), with lemon juice and vegetable salt, and would order it again. If the novelty of this carefully curated, beautifully built bar and restaurant begins to wear off, that’s because there’s much more to come after you’re done polishing off its craveable comforts. Get set to be entertained while you dine, as the next string to this entertainmentbased bar’s bow is a jaw-dropping exhibition of illusionism. Head here on weekends, and you’ll get to witness the show-stopping mastery of illusionist WHAT’S ON Drummond MoneyVERDICT Coutts. Manar Abu Dhabi lights up the city…
Rafael Lozeno-Hemmer, Thermal Drift
T
he bustling art scene in Abu Dhabi has come to life with an enchanting art exhibition illuminating the city like never before. Manar Abu Dhabi is a citywide light art exhibition that’s a shining highlight in Public Art Abu Dhabi’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the capital’s public spaces. Using our city’s gorgeous natural landscapes as a blank canvas, it’s enriching destinations around the capital with breathtaking installations that need to be seen to be believed. And best of all, it’s running until January 30, 2024. The inaugural exhibition is held under the theme Grounding Light, an apt name to showcase the concept of grounding and self-enlightenment and the belief that light is a reflection of our inner selves, body, mind, nature and spirit. The theme is evident in each of the exhibitions on display from the sitespecific commissions to the light sculptures, projections, and immersive artworks. The key locations in the city to marvel at these luminescent showstoppers include Corniche Road and Beach, the Eastern Mangroves, Fahid Island, Jubail Mangrove Park, Lulu Island, Saadiyat Island and Al Samaliyah Island. These Abu Dhabi vistas are already stunning in their own way, but the ‘glow-up’ shines a light on just how beautiful these capital neighbourhoods are. The group exhibition features over 20

local, regional, and international artists, each presenting their own interpretation of the Grounding Light theme. As well as impressive entries from the region, visitors can admire pieces from artists commissioned from Argentina, Germany, France, India, Palestine, the United Kingdom and more. The best news? It’s all free to visit.
Here’s what you can see at this open-air art exhibition change. It is presented in three languages: Arabic, English, and Urdu, set against the beautiful Corniche. Here you will also be able to spot a fourmetre-high sculpture titled Coral Alchemy (Acropora Grove) – which promotes environmental awareness, highlighting the endangered acropora coral species.

The most stunning art exhibition is a snapshot of the bioluminescent Abu Dhabi beaches called Luciferin Shores. The beautiful display will lead you to reflect on the interconnectedness of all living beings. Manar Abu Dhabi even features a drone and light painting show called Chasing the dance of Alfay at the Corniche, offering sky gazers a preview of Saadiyat Island’s stunning architectural future. On Fahid Island, it’s hard to miss monumental land art installation, Self Similar by Jim Denevan, which features 448 pyramids that form a mandala pattern. While it’s a sight to behold when the sun is up, head over at night as the exhibition is illuminated by 432 solar lanterns complete with shadows and warm glows. For sculpture fans, check out the visual display at The Corniche, Abu Dhabi Viewpoint, which will make old-time dwellers of the UAE reflect on their experience growing up in the country they call home. Showcasing just how much the UAE has offered up to countless number of expats, Directions on Al Samaliyah Island is a circular arrangement of numerical coordinates signifying a land of unity and boundless opportunities. And lastly, Saadiyat Island will be celebrated as a rising cultural district in the making with a display called Rise, with the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Museum rising in the horizon providing an iconic backdrop.

As part of the exciting new additions, teamLab will unveil startling immersive artworks that transport viewers into a world where nature and technology converge in harmony. Another immersive experience you won’t want to miss is One with the Soil, One with the Cloud in Jubail Mangrove Park, which will illuminate the life cycle of mangrove trees through a floating swarm of lights. If the art exhibitions have ignited the spark within you, and want to get creative yourself, there are a number of workshops taking place across the exhibitions to partake in. Additionally, a number of public talks and performances will take place across the city.

The shows you don’t want to miss this December THE BEST SANTAS ON THE BIG SCREEN p46 WHATSON.AE | MONTH 2022 45
CULTURE // FILM Words: Miles Buckeridge
Billy Bob Thornton Bad Santa
Tim Allen
Bottom of our round-up, and definitely getting coal for Christmas, is the star of 2003’s alternative black comic take on the Christmas movie. Thornton’s mall Santa is more hobo than ho-ho-ho, an inveterate womaniser, petty thief and schnapps fiend whose festive crime spree is interrupted by, for once, a more wholesome sort of holiday spirit. Against all odds the movie ends with Bad Santa caring about people other than himself. It’s a bottom-ofthe-sack kind of Xmas miracle, but we’ll take it.
The Santa Clause movies
David Harbour Violent Night I imagine the studio pitch for this movie included the line ‘a traditional Christmas tale, with a little sprinkling of John Wick.’ It’s filed under the (absolutely legitimate) Die Hard subsection of the festive film genre and features Harbour’s grizzled St. Nick meting out jolly justice to a gang of single-manifesto-pledge, pro-humbug kidnappers. He might not be the most cuddly iteration of festivecheer-personified, but sometimes you need to sleigh, to save Christmas Day.
This franchise – placing a reluctant Tim ‘the Toolman’ Allen in the titular man-in-red role – ran to three movies across the nineties and early noughties. The premise is simple, Scott Calvin (Allen) plays a Grinchy big-toy exec, who inadvertently kills old Father C while he’s doing the chimney shimmy on his roof. Following the Santacide, Calvin puts on the suit and finds himself contractually obliged to deliver toys (a legal ‘Santa Clause’) until such time as he too shuffles off this tinselly coil. Scott eventually accepts the reality he’s present-ed with and embodies the Yuletide spirit with ‘bowl-full-of-jelly’ gusto.
RANKED Claus for applause
46 DECEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
David Huddleston Santa Claus: The Movie
Kurt Russell The Christmas Chronicles movies I’m not sure who had ‘seeing Kurt Russell as Santa’ on their Christmas wish list, but I think we can all agree on being grateful to them and Netflix for the manifesting. The two Christmas Chronicles films pay homage to the traditional feelgood festive format, which tackles the cognitive dissonance behind adults not believing in Santa; of Christmas cheer having tangible, actionable value; and flying reindeer. There’s also a big song and dance number, Russell’s real life wife Goldie Hawn playing Mrs Claus – and after a long career in action movies, you instinctively back Kurt to secure the sack.
Originally released back in 1985, the film opens with a Papa Noel origin story – how he got his powers (no, it wasn’t being bitten by a radioactive reindeer) and why he embarked on his toy delivering mission. There’s also a confrontation with that big 80s movie theme of ‘greed is good’ when an outcast elf (Dudley Moore) is co-opted into toy retail hell by a deliciously malicious John Lithgow. Huddleston’s Santa comes across in a joyously authentic way, and he probably would be the ultimate big screen Santa if it wasn’t for...
Richard Attenborough Miracle on 34th Street (1994) Some people may remember this Attenborough brother from his velociraptor bothering stint on Negligence-Suit-Island but for us, it’s all about his appearance in the reboot to the 1947 Christmas classic, Miracle on 34th Street. The film dives surprisingly deeply into the concept of belief and the importance of occasionally suspending disbelief. It’s filled with heartwarming interactions, powerful performances and knee-sat requests of Peter Pollywog Patrol Frogs. The whole experience being given an extra mistletoe and logs on the fire boost by the, now sadly deceased, Dickie Attenborough who embodied the spirit of Santa so well, that we’re still not 100 per cent sure he was acting.

PUSH IT TO THE LIMIT AT THE
SPARTAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP Get ready for a grueling test of endurance and grit…
T
he 2023 Abu Dhabi Spartan World Championship lands this month, and attributes such as strength, skill, grit and determination will converge from December 8 to 10 in Al Wathba to bring you an annual event in the capital that puts all its competitors to the test. The yearly event, born from the Spartan Race Series and now a regular feature in a multitude of countries across the globe, will witness contestants put on a relentless display of mental and physical fortitude. As you might have gathered, this contest is not for the faint of heart, and an endless challenge that is often peppered with gruelling obstacles including barbed wire crawls, spear throws and more will require aspiring spartans to tap into the depths of their physical and mental reserves as they employ a combination of strength, agility and a high-performance mindset. While it is usually the will to conquer what lies ahead and the willingness to emerge victorious in the face of adversity
that sets the winners apart from their counterparts, discipline and resilience borne from the people that the event is named after will also drive contestants to forge ahead at the 2023 Abu Dhabi Spartan World Championship. The adrenaline-soaked action in the Al Wathba desert will include new additions at this year’s edition, like a 3km obstacle course and a first-of-its-kind night race that will kick the event off on December 8 over a fully illuminated 5km Spartan Sprint desert course. The 3km course will include a 1km course loop and an
array of 10 challenging obstacles, which will determine whether athletes make it to the next round or not. The grand finale, however, takes things to a whole different level with triple the challenges in store. It’s a taxing 3km loop, that is three rounds of the original 1km loop, and a whopping thirty obstacles that will test the athletes’ will to push through against the odds. Only the top 15 male and female competitors will advance to the final and if you’re among the top three winners in the male and female categories, you get to dip your hands in gold, or rather, go home with a piece of the generous $85,000 (Dhs312,000) prize purse. For those of us that are playing spectator at the event, day one of the championship concludes with an entertaining display of live music, the official Parade of Nations, and an inspiring athlete panel discussion on the main stage once the night session comes to a close. This historic contest in Abu Dhabi promises a thrilling display of physical prowess, stamina, and resilience, and we can’t wait to be inspired… Spartan World Championship 2023, Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi, December 8 to 10, 5.30pm, from Dhs275. @spartanarabia

They weren’t alone: schools of fish came into view the moment we jumped into the sea. A kaleidoscope of colour coming at us from every angle. We followed our guide as he traversed the creature-rich waters just below the surface of Musandam’s enormous mountains. Most come to Musandam – located at the northeastern most point of the Arabian Peninsula in the Sultanate of Oman – to get close to nature, either by scuba diving, rock climbing or hand-line fishing as the locals do. Others make the two-hour journey from Dubai to spend a luxurious getaway in one of the region’s most stunning properties – the award-winning Six Senses Zighy Bay. The 82 all-villa beach resort is laid out like a traditional Omani village featuring individual stonewalled villas complete with private plunge pools; the craggy mountains cradling the resort from the back, and a panoramic view of the sapphire blue waters of Musandam’s fjords at the front.

But nothing beats sleeping outside, and the daybeds on the upper deck provide the most picturesque platform for stargazing. The next morning as we’re out kayaking across the calm waters before breakfast, another huge school of fish surfaced, soared and splashed back in the water. “Shame we don’t have our fishing lines as there’s a lot of fish below us,” said Humaid. Onboard, the 90-foot vessel is able accommodate up to six people, and features three bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms. As we set sail, our head waiter Rahul is on call to bring us Dhahab master bedroom bathroom fruit or a refreshing smoothie as we lie on the huge sand-yellow loungers admiring the scenery. Put all that together and you have the blueprint to a Christmas market. These kiosked hubs of festive fun have been around since the Middle Ages, drawing crowds from far and wide. We’ve ‘mulled’ it over and these top our marketleading recommendations for you to have a merry, happy, jolly, cheery, wonderful Christmas, this year.
Christkindelsmärik Magic of Advent Market The Christmas markets in Vienna date all the way back to the 13th century and to this day, are still regarded as one of Europe’s finest festive fairs. The Magic of Advent Market at Rathausplatz is a must-visit. Featuring more than 145 stalls amidst a network of alleys and lights, you can sample some mulled wine or gluhwein, grapple with bratwurst and revel in local Austrian cheer. This year, you can enjoy all of its festive magic until December 26.
Strasbourg is called the ‘Christmas Capital’ of France, so you already know it’s going to be good. The Christkindelsmärik in Place Brogilie is known as the oldest one in France, founded in 1570. Here, over 300 chalets hawk festive trinkets and the gastronomic traditions of the region, including Alsatian pastries and the ubiquitous warm winter wine. The markets in Strasbourg generally begin around late November and end just in time for the big day.
Union Square Christmas Market The Union Square Christmas Market is the Big Apple’s big star on the Christmas tree – indeed the largest, and most extravagant one in the city with more than 150 vendors. The holiday spirit runs rife here, from the white Christmas vibes to the twinling lights and the festive nibbles. Flanked entirely by local and small businesses, it’s perhaps the best spot to visit to have a taste of that fairytale New York Christmas cheer. This year, the market runs until December 24.

TRAVEL // FESTIVE MARKETS
Frankfurt Christmas Market The Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market is a firm favourite for UK residents and visitors alike, and a fairly significant part of the city’s festive calendar of events. It comes to life on Victoria Square and stands proudly as the the largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany or Austria. Here, you can sample German classics like pretzels, schnitzels, bratwursts, and roasted almonds, all of which can be washed down with gluhwein, weissbier (wheat beer), or hot chocolate. There’s also loads to pick up in the way of presents – it’s as Christmas market-y as a Christmas market gets.
Christkindlesmarkt In a world of modern Christmas markets, be a Renaissance Christkindlesmarkt. This one is a veteran, one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe and still retains much of the character from yesteryear. The wooden stalls are constructed locally, and most of the goods sold by the 180 vendors are made entirely by hand. Consider it a time capsule of sorts. Sample local gingerbread, Nuremburg’s most famous festive export, and get yourself a little Prune person – traditional figurines made with prunes.
Winterfest As it turns out, no one does Christmas Eve quite like Hong Kong, where the annual Winterfest brings the community together in an amalgamation of eastern and western Christmas customs. If you happen to find yourself in the West Kowloon Cultural District this month, make sure to a pay visit witness the tallest Christmas tree in the city, and try their traditional Yuletide dish, congee. This wholesome rice porridge is seasoned with chicken broth and drops straight down the chimney into the food-that-tastes-like-a-warm-hug category.
62 DECEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
Grote Markt The centre of all the festive action in this chocolate box Belgian city is the Town Square, where the Bruges Christmas Market attracts the greatest number of visitors. While the roots of this spot’s history don’t go very far back, it is still a gorgeous attraction, serving straight out of a Hallmark holiday movie vibes. The many rows of wooden chalets stock gifts, crafts and festive decorations, such as knit and crochet, nutcrackers, candles, manger scenes, toys and ornaments made of handblown glass and other little bits. While there, sample some local specialities like warm waffles and hot chocolate.

Santurantikuy Every year, since the 16th Century, this market has been coming to life on Christmas Eve in Cusco’s Plaza De Armas. It’s an opportunity for local artisans from across the south of the country to bring their renditions of Niño Manuelito, the Andean version of baby Jesus, to the steps and sidewalks. The highlight of Santurantikuy is the authenticity of its spiritual connection, the name literally translating to ‘saints for sale’. If you visit, make sure to get yourself a Retablo – a three-dimensional box depicting a religious scene, which is the speciality of the region.

FACILITIES
A great escape LOCATION
The term ‘escape’ is often used interchangeably with holiday. It can be deployed in the quite literal, geographical, sense – as in flying away to some distant dreamy shore. But escapes don’t have to come with jet lag. Destinations like Bab Al Nojoum Al Mugheirah offer near total immersion into the natural, default settings, side of the UAE. Located in Al Dhafra, around a 90-minute drive from downtown Abu Dhabi, the Al Mugheirah glamp site, is a low-impact facility – a pearl on the mangrove coast, with rugged, remote, wilderness all around it, and indeed inside it. It’s such a thorn-scrubbed contrast to city living that it’s almost impossible to think of it as anything less than a truly great escape.
LOOK AND FEEL Everything at Bab Al Nojoum Al Mugheirah has been designed to blend with the surrounding natural world, or at least not distract from it. Even the communal spaces are lowrise, ecologically respectful, wood-toned and endowed with an authentic, earthy chic. Safari-core aesthetic is a recurring theme here, seen most playfully perhaps in the uniforms of the resort staff. But always with a conscious understanding that the Gaian spirit is the main character.
ROOMS You may be hundreds of kms from the nearest Nando’s, but just because this is remote, it doesn’t mean remote from convenience. You can book into the slickly renovated classic silver Airstreams – with snug double beds, powerful air con and a genuinely surprising inventory of modern trappings (kettle, fridge, shower, toilet) arranged with the sort of efficient spaceusage that feels innately Scandanavian. There are one and two-bedroom cabins, razzed-up shipping containers which in addition to mod cons also come with
66 DECEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
Bab Al Nojoum tends to attract guests who are seeking out an inbox sabbatical and want to plug directly into nature. And there’s plenty of that. Whether powered by foot or pedal, there are acres of fenced-off, sandy Savanna-esque terrain to roam through. You can go on nature trails through the neighbouring mangroves, take part in a variety of wellness activities, and there’s a gorgeous outdoor pool to wallow in the shallows of.
FOOD AND DRINK There are a few dining options on-site (and because of its distance from city lights, not a huge amount off-site). The brand’s Argentinian asado-inspired dining concept, 28 Degrees restaurant, has an outpost here, and there’s a menu of classic bar snacks available at the pool. There are also locally-sourced picnic hampers available, a perfect romantic pairing for midnight stargazing.
ROOM RATES Rates for the double occupancy Airstreams start at around Dhs730, with all-inclusive options from around Dhs1.200 per night. Two bedroom cabin prices start at Dhs1,200 for bed and breakfast or Dhs2,200 for the all-inclusive package. Bab Al Nojoum Al Mugheirah, Al Marfa, Abu Dhabi. Tel: (0)2 895 3777. babalnojoum.com
