IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE WE’RE IN THE FINAL FEW MONTHS OF THE YEAR
And what a year it’s been in Abu Dhabi. We’ve welcomed A-List stars, huge sporting events, music and food festivals, and so much more. And announcements for exciting new residential and hotel projects – as well as new museums and cultural icons – have ensured there’s still so much to look forward to next year and beyond. But before we start looking to 2025, the final few weeks of 2024 have so much to give.
Of course there’s all the joy and merriment that comes with the festive season, from shows and markets happening throughout December, to brunch buffets and gourmet dinners taking place from December 24 to 26, we’ve got your complete guide to silly season from p15.
Outside of festive, one of the biggest events in the capital’s calendar – the Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – is set to descend on the city for three days of exhilarating on- and off-track action from December 5 to 8. Whether you’re an F1 fan or not, the array of events, gigs and pop-ups that take over Yas Island promise something for everyone. You’ll find the very best bits from p23.
Then there’s the best of the rest: the beloved Mother of the Nation festival returns this month; as does Liwa Village, bringing an array of culinary and cultural experiences to the golden Liwa dunes. Plus December sees Saadiyat Nights kick off for a second season, a fabulous concert series that begins with star showman Robbie Williams. Read about all of these exciting events from p40.
From all of us at What’s On, we wish you a very Merry Christmas.
Enjoy the issue,

A proper party dress from… Odd Muse
For me, Christmas Day is less slouching about in pjs, and more glamming up and going out. This year, I’m spending it in Dubai, and my husband and I will be enjoying Christmas lunch at The Guild. For the big day, this Odd Muse dress (Dhs875) is at the top of my Xmas wish list. @oddmuseme

Another opportunity to wreck my knee with… a skateboard
We seem to be functionally incapable of achieving world peace as a species, so I’ll leave those wishes to the beauty pageant contestants. Instead, I’ve woken up and chosen the opposite. Just weeks after ruining my knee from a combination of poor form, weighted squats and running –I’m preparing to do it all again, from a greater height, with a skateboard. My son is getting one too, so at least we won’t be lonely on trips to the ER. @rageshops

Through MY EYES Farai Machingura
THE UAE ACCORDING TO...
Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their favourite places to hidden gems, must-try dishes and local brands they love. This month, we chat to Farai Machingura (@toqsic) event curator and co-founder of House of Yanos. Here he shares some of his favourite spots that you need on your radar.
My favourite place in the city is Sabaa Cafe in Al Seef. The food is exceptional, and the menu features Arabic, Indian and Mediterranean cuisines. Besides the affordable happy hour prices, what really impressed me was the attentive staff who always make me feel welcome.
@sabaadxb
I love the Al Seef area in Dubai, it’s currently my favourite. The hotels are stunning, and there’s plenty of beautiful things to see and explore like the souk and the Creek. Be sure to check out Skafos and Sol Sky Bar while you’re there.
@alseefdubai, @skafosdxb, @solskybar
@kizadubai
JA The Resort has always been my go-to destination for a relaxing weekend staycation. I think it’s because I’m accustomed to the hustle and bustle of the city, so escaping to a quiet and peaceful environment is a welcome change. I often visit with my team to unwind, brainstorm, and recharge in a calm setting. Plus, the large festivals held at Soul Beach inspire us to connect with other creative individuals.
@jatheresort
It’s tough to choose a favourite restaurant, because I go to a lot through work. But, if I had to choose I would say KIZA Dubai. I appreciate their consistent quality of food and dedication to providing authentic flavours. It has been my go-to for a while now and I always suggest it to others for an authentic African dining experience.
There’s a special feeling of serenity at the Jumeirah Al Naseem swimming pool, with its unobstructed view of the Burj Al Arab. It truly feels like a dream, making you believe that everything will turn out fine in the end. The nostalgia of my first job being at 360 next to the Burj Al Arab adds to the emotional significance of this experience for me.
@jumeirahalnaseem
Few issues are as symbolic of the UAE’s tolerance and warmth as our December 1998 festive issue, which saw Ramadan and Christmas fall over the same period. Out of respect for the Holy Month, many of the hotel’s brought forward their Christmas and New Year celebrations, with residents tucking into turkey and ringing in the new year two weeks early. That year, the highlights included The Irish Village’s week-long festive celebrations, which cumulated with the New Year’s Eve masquerade ball on December 17 – when an evening of free-bubbly and live entertainment saw residents forking out Dhs50. Mid-December 1998 also saw New Year’s Eve parties take place at The Dublin Arms at the Royalton Plaza and Rock Bottom Café at the Regent Palace Hotel, both popular watering holes at the time.
And alongside ensuring readers knew where the best early Christmas celebrations were taking place, that issue also provided insights into how Ramadan would be marked. Unlike in recent years, where life largely continues as normal during the Holy Month, in 1998, all entertainment and daytime dining would stop. But many Ramadan tents would spring up across the emirates, and Muslims and non-Muslims alike would gather for iftar, which remains to this day a wonderful way to embrace the season whether you’re fasting or not.
Interestingly, the festive season and Ramadan are set to overlap once more in 2031, which it’s hard to believe is only seven years away. But before that, we’ve got a fabulous season of festive frivolity to look forward to this year, and the very best of the holiday season can be found from p15. From myself and all of my Motivate Media Group colleagues, we wish all those celebrating a very Merry Christmas.

CREATE HOLIDAY MEMORIES
Unwrap the magic of the season at Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi, where thoughtfully curated festive experiences create timeless memories in the vibrant heart of the city.
ELF THE MUSICAL
You’d have to be a cotton-headed ninny muggin to miss the live stage musical reimagining of Christmas cinematic great, Elf. The 80-minute-long seasonal spectacular by Olivier Award-winning producer Paul Taylor-Mills is an ode to finding your festive cheer and your own path in life. Join Buddy the Elf on his North Pole sabbatical in New York, along for the ride will be Santa’s (WE KNOW HIM) flying sleigh, an audience snowball fight, and – presumably – songs about core spag bol ingredients: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup.

YAS WINTER FEST
Yas Gateway Park North also lies in the path of the tinsel tornado. Its festive makeover for Yas Winter Fest is set to include a snow play zone for children, snow slide, traditional carousel and spinning teacups, caterpillar rollercoaster, swings, inflatable slides, ball pits, soft play and a zipline. All of the rides are chargeable, and priced between Dhs10 and Dhs25 each. There’ll be grand tree lighting ceremony every day, carol singing and a nightly Christmas movie. Ho-hohold your horses because we’re not done yet – the omnipresent custodian of the naught-nice list, Father Christmas is also setting up shop on Yas. A North Pole workshop to be precise where kids can honour their inner elf by making gingerbread houses, slime and festive canvases. Hopefully not at the same time.

WINTER WONDERLAND AT SNOW ABU DHABI
Snow Abu Dhabi is about the closest you’ll get, spiritually if not geographically, to experiencing the North Pole in the UAE. That means, in addition to the more 20-themed rides and attractions – you’ll also get the chance to meet Santa in his natural habitat. Bundle packages start at Dhs329 (with Grotto-only tickets from Dhs165), which includes a big ol’mug of hot chocolate, a gift from Papa Chrimbo and a pair of fleece gloves. The smiles on the faces of your little ones though, are likely to be absolutely priceless. Reem Mall, Reem Island, Abu Dhabi, December 1 to 25, tickets from Dhs165. snowabudhabi.com

Lights out, and away we go
It’s the final – and arguably biggest – race on the F1 calendar. Here’s everything you need to know about the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2024...
Thanks to a little injection of Netflix screen time, F1 popularity has increased exponentially, meaning that the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final race on the F1 calendar, is one of the world’s biggest sporting spectacles. Here’s your complete guide.
When is the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2024?
The Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2024 will take place from Friday, December 6 until Sunday December 8.
On Friday December 6, the first practice session will take place from 1.30pm until 2.30pm, followed by a second from 5pm to 6pm. On Saturday, December 7, the third practice hour begins at 2.30pm with qualifying for pole position flagging off at 6pm. Then, with drivers taking to the starting grid, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will officially get underway at 5pm, on Sunday, December 8.
What’s all the noise about?
The Abu Dhabi race is particularly exciting, as it’s the final event on the race calendar – which, this year, has packed in a record-breaking 24 races. As well as crowning a Formula 1 world champion driver, the end of the season also sees the crowning of a championship team.
Where does it take place?
Like every year, Abu Dhabi’s own Yas Marina Circuit will host the Abu Dhabi race. This exhilarating racetrack, on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island, will see 20 drivers gun it out for the spoils over 58 laps of the 5.281 km track.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has already clinched his fourth victory as of the night race in Las Vegas. In the race for the constructor’s title, McLaren took the lead from Red Bull after the race in Azerbaijan on September 15 for the first time since 2014. If they’re victorious, Team Papaya will win their first constructor’s championship since 1998.
Who is performing at the YaSalam Afterrace Concerts?
American singer and songwriter Teddy Swims and Korean DJ Peggy Gou will be the first to take to the stage, bringing electrifying performances to Yas Island’s Etihad Park on Thursday, December 5. The Lose Control star will bring his blend of R’n’B, soul and pop to town, before superstar DJ Peggy Gou puts on a fabulous performance with hits such as It Makes you Forget and Starry Night
On Friday December 6, global music powerhouses Maroon 5 will headline the Yasalam After-Race Concerts. Frontman Adam Levine and co. promise to deliver some of their most iconic tracks, with superhits such as She Will Be Loved, This Love, Sugar, and Moves Like Jagger sure to bring a motorsport-mad crowd to their feet.
What else is happening around the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?
F1 fever typically takes over all of Yas Island during the Grand Prix weekend, so we can expect brunches, parties, celebrity appearances and much more across the island.
Further upping the ante in the musical sphere on Friday will be Afterlife Festival, known for its iconic visual displays, thumping performances and cutting-edge sound as it lands in Abu Dhabi for the first time. Taking place at Yas Gateway Park, it invites music lovers to rave until the early hours, with a line-up that includes Tale of Us, Layla Benitez, Rebūke and Cassian.
Saturday’s post-race concert will see rap legend Eminem headline in Abu Dhabi. The 15-time Grammy Award winner and Academy Award recipient is expected to belt out hits such as Lose Yourself, The Real Slim Shady, Without Me and this summer’s hit, Houdini English rockers Muse, who were the first band confirmed for this year’s Yasalam After-Race Concert Series will perform on race day, Sunday, December 8 to close out what we’re certain will be an iconic celebration of motorsport and music in the UAE capital.

PINCODE, AT THE GALLERIA AL MARYAH ISLAND
Enjoy the journey, destination, and everything in between…
PREMISE
Chef Kunal Kapur, of MasterChef India fame has brought the newest outpost of his sizzling eat, Pincode, to The Galleria Al Maryah Island. With a sparkling menu inspired by his travels across the country, we’re briefed ahead of its opening that “every dish is like a little postcard from every corner of India, inspired by his travels and love for regional flavours”.
AMBIANCE
Gorgeous interiors that speak of the country’s rich history and diverse cultural elements ensure you’re not just here for a meal, but to take a trip down memory lane. A quick glance of the framed art on their walls will introduce you to everything with tales of yesteryear, from horsemen ready for combat, to upholestry adorned with imagery of endangered species. Parties of enthusiastic lunchers fill up neighbouring booths, with the cuisine proving a draw for a multitude of ethnicities. The music is vibey and upbeat, but soft enough so you can engage in conversation, while the staff are attentive, don’t hover and can enlist the ingredients of every creation effortlessly – an ability they credit to 15 days of rigorous training ahead of the big opening.
I picked up from where they left off, and I was supported to pursue a career that then, wasn’t seen as a mainstream choice.”
MENU
Fall in love with the flavours of India at Pincode, where every last tastebud is awakened. While the venue is not licensed as yet, their refreshing pick of mocktails includes hits such as the Nubra (Dhs40), a grapefruit-infused, summery concoction, as well as our favourite, the Madurai Bloom (Dhs40). This ode to the Southern Indian city is served with a small rose, and while it isn’t sweet, includes gulkand, a fragrant paste of rose petals, and arrives in theatrical fashion.
Chef Kapur tells What’s On: “I grew up living around extended family, and it was the male members at home who would engage in friendly competition to see who could prepare the best dishes. Naturally,
For appetisers, we begin with the dhokla chaat (Dhs40), the westernIndian treat marinated in buttermilk and served with passionfruit gel and wasabi peas. It fares exceedingly well on warmer days, and is the ideal accompaniment when you pick starters such as the harissa paneer tikka(Dhs58), a roasted dish that skilfully marries famed cottage cheese and spices native to North Africa – served with a spattering of garlic sauce. If you prefer something a little milder, go with the bhutte ke kebab(Dhs55), delicate corn cakes that almost come apart upon being poked, and
served with sriracha.
For mains, we get a stalwart in Indian kitchens, the daal makhani (Dhs68), and what arrives as a seemingly unassuming dish with a portion of buttered naans, stars in this flavour-fired culinary caper on a Friday afternoon. This show stopper at Pincode is proof there’s specialty in simplicity, and whether it’s the texture, consistency, the dash of cream, the right temperature, or lentils cooked just right that make it the undisputable winner for us, this really is the embodiment of soultouching fare for us. If you prefer flavours from the South, try the paneer Chettinad (Dhs68) – sweet and spicy with a dash of curry leaves. Interestingly, they’re served in nostalgia-inducing, tiffin-style steel carrier boxes. Pincode does a stellar job at engaging all five senses.
For dessert, we’re served the rasmalai tiramisu (Dhs40). Get set to work your way through creamy goodness until you hit real rasmalai, a famous dessert from the Bengal region that I will transport to a big fat indian wedding. Pincode, The Galleria Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi, Sun to Thurs 10am to 11pm, Fri and Sat 10am to midnight. Tel: (0)2 234 0111. @pincode.uae
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
Amid incredible hues and cultural odes, Pincode flawlessly delivers a flavour fest in the UAE capital.
REVIEW:
GOLDFISH SUSHI AND YAKITORI AT MARINA MALL
The capital never tires of glorious Japanese eats… Words:
While it can sometimes feel like Abu Dhabi’s Marina Mall, a popular lifestyle and dining destination among long-time residents, is sometimes forgotten in the bustle of all the swanky new eats coming to town, brand new openings such as Beau, earlier this year, and now Goldfish Sushi and Yakitori from chef Akmal Anuar are shifting the focus back on to Marina Mall.
Located right opposite Cipriani Dolci on the ground level, Goldfish is now open for business, and welcomes shoppers, diners and loyal fans of the brand to head on over and enjoy a cosy interior, spacious outdoor seating under a dome of natural light and signature Japanese dishes. It adds beautifully to the mall’s portfolio of acclaimed dining
options, at one of the capital’s leading spots on the corniche.
Goldfish’s menu spells out all of its famed culinary creations, and whether you’re well-versed with such favourites as sushi rolls, sashimi and wagyu or a complete beginner, this is a great place to start, because the menu is simple to understand, while serving up a great iteration of these classic eats. While starters such as the yellowtail carpaccio (Dhs72), mains like the king prawn skewers(Dhs84) with red curry paste, and the adored wagyu sliders (Dhs115) are all mouthwatering mentions, they also introduce you to the world of Japanese cooking in controlled portions without sacrificing taste or indulgence.
We begin lunch with the corn and mizuna salad (Dhs35), bringing a healthy mix to the table with a welcome hint of sweetness and crunch, but this bowl keeps it lean to make way for the volcano sushi roll (Dhs52) with teriyaki salmon, crab and flamed mayo. This popular dish never escapes our eyes on a Japanese menu, and the flamed mayo finish is as delectable as it is theatrical.
If it’s skewers you want, you can also get the Australian wagyu (Dhs98) with tastebud-igniting wasabi salsa, or the flavour-packed shishito peppers (Dhs28). There’s also tori ramen at Dhs70 with Onsen egg and chilli oil, as well as the Chilean sea bass claypot (Dhs150), which should give you an idea of how diverse the menu is at this hotly anticipated opening in the capital.
For dessert, we recommend the chocolate bomber tart (Dhs45) or, if you want to keep with the Japanese dining theme, the matcha cheesecake (Dhs45) with almond parmesan. We round things off with the passion cooler (Dhs35) with passion fruit, and there’s also the Goldfish spritz (Dhs40), with non-alcoholic Aperol. Goldfish Sushi and Yakitori, Abu Dhabi Marina Mall, Al Kasr, Abu Dhabi. Tel: (0)2 665 6485. @goldfishabudhabi
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
Goldfish is simple and fuss-free, yet capable of drawing big numbers with authentic flavours and great service.
Available across all GMP stores.
LTHE FIVE BEST BITES OF 2024
It’s time to take some tough calls…
ooking back at the end of a year, we generally reflect, introspect and wonder about decisions made and what might have been. Then we look forward to how we could possibly do things differently, and better, in the new year.
Except at What’s On, we linger on the year that was, a little longer – with thought bubbles floating over our heads of the best dishes we’ve tried in town. And on that note, here are the best five Abu Dhabi things we’ve tasted in 2024.
FOR STARTERS
Beau Restaurant’s Long Potatoes
Chef Vincent le Moal brought this slick eat to Abu Dhabi’s Marina Mall right before summer, and while it’s hard to pick a clear winner, this minimalistic restaurant with hotel-inspired interiors caught our eye with their long potatoes (Dhs25), also available in a truffle variant (Dhs30). These potato pulp fries practically melt in the mouth, lightly salted and served with parmesan and honey lime mayo – and they’re like nothing we’ve tried prior, or since. Dhs25. @beaurestaurants
FOR BEVERAGES
La Petite Maison Abu Dhabi’s Tomatini
They’re What’s On Abu Dhabi’s Restaurant of the Year in 2024 for a reason, and while all of their creations impress, this iconic cocktail is a year-round winner for us – and clearly for a lot of others too, who joined us in wishing them Happy Tomatini Day on November 12. Goodbye tomato soup, hello tomatini.
Dhs48. @lpmabudhabi
FOR MAINS
Pincode’s Dal Makhani
While every course (and every dish, really) at the newly-opened Pincode at The Galleria Al Maryah Island was an absolute flavour fest, we’re still a little amazed at how a dish that’s generally considered homely and unassuming could be done so well. This culinary stalwart of Indian kitchens is served with a portion of fresh buttered naans, and was the show stopper for us at Chef Kunal Kapur’s Abu Dhabi outpost – real soul-touching fare. Dhs68. @pincode.uae
FOR DESSERT
Butcher & Still’s Cherry Pie a la Mode
While you’re making your way through incredible cuts inspired by the top cities in the US of A, try to save some space for this one. Butcher & Still at Four Seasons Abu Dhabi serves an incredible Cherry Pie a la Mode with a scoop of French Vanilla ice cream. Chef Marshall Roth takes you back to the American Midwest with this tastebud-arousing champion on their dessert menu, and the amarena and morello cherries’ scent is one you’ll catch yourself daydreaming about at 3pm on a Monday. That’s what time and day it is now. Dhs120. @butcherandstill
FOR ANYTIME
Majlis by Pierre Herme’s Pain Perdu Vanille
When the Rosewood Abu Dhabi’s lobby lounge vanished right before summer, that left us wondering what might take its place. Months later, the masterstroke that is Majlis by Pierre Herme opened its doors to Abu Dhabi, and we had the good fortune of trying their pain perdu vanille (Dhs105). Feel the subtly-sweet French toast melt away in seconds as you let the flavours linger. It’s served with a garnishing of berries, beautifully adorning your plate – and when your first thought upon biting into a dish is “This is happiness on a plate”, you know it’s going to make your top five for the year. FILM INTERVIEW:
A RED CHRISTMAS
We
hear from the stars of this year’s big festive blockbuster, Red One
Christmas traditions tend to be a dependable breed of conventions.
You know if there’s turkey, there will be trimmings; the time honoured ritual of defrosting Mariah Carey and Michael Bublé will begin in November without fail; the tree lights that have spent all year tangling themselves into increasingly tighter knots in your storage cupboard will have lost a few bulbs to the Ghost of Christmases past; and there will be a new slew of festive movies featuring some variation of the formula: man/ child/woman stops believing in the spirit of Christmas, experiences Santa-based epiphany, becomes a radicalised anti humbug evangelist.
There are some exceptions to this cinematic trope though, films like this year’s Red One – starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as the lead bodyguard of an impressively swole Santa (J.K. Simmons); Chris Evans as a morally dubious mercenary; Lucy Liu as E.L.F. (Enforcement, Logistics and Fortification) director Zoe Harlow; Kristofer “GOT” Hivju as Santa’s brother Krampus; and Kiernan Shipka who plays the films lead villain – the ice witch Gryla. The movie takes the form of an extraction saga, Santa is kidnapped and it’s down to Johnson, Evans and an elite unit of the E.L.F. protection force, to get him back. It’s a Papa Noel sack full of action, schlapstick lols and kid-friendly Yuletide fun.
And if you fancy stoking the fires of your own festive feels, it’s out in cinemas across the UAE now. Hungry for more? We were (virtually) present for a fireside chat with the cast and crew at a recent press conference. These are the things that were on their nice list...
Dwayne Johnson, talking about finding the heart in the movie: “I think the idea, and it’s one of my favourite parts of the movie, where
JK as Santa Claus reminds me that it’s our job to see the best in people... to look at the child, look beyond the fact they’re on the naughty list, like this guy [points to Chris Evans], look beyond it and look at the kid in everybody.”
Chris Evans, talking about whether people on the naughty list deserve a second chance:
“This movie does a great job of tapping into the the heart and humanity that you’re supposed to feel during the holidays, goodwill towards men. It is about remembering priorities, and certainly for the folks that are looking for forgiveness, offering them those second chances.”
Kiernan Shipka, talking about being deliciously evil:
“It was really fun. I loved it. I’ve never really played a proper villain before. I’ve definitely played people who are dark and twisted, but the film kind of hinges on this kidnapping ... So playing someone who is a villain, but also maintaining a sense of levity and fun with the whole thing, was really lovely. I’ll play villain anytime.”
Lucy Liu, talking about her Christmas traditions:
“We didn’t grow up with any traditions, but I have a child now, and I realise that you can start your own traditions. Of course, he gets gifts, but the most important gifts are experiences ... doing something together, even if it’s simple, like going to see The [Radio City] Rockettes. I didn’t think he would really remember, but he said to me last year, ‘Oh, remember going to the Empire State Building?’ And it really made me feel like, oh, this really works.”

JYes, Liwa Village returns this year, 30 per cent larger than last year, delivering a festival that promises 23 days of adrenalinepumping activities, cultural immersion, and non-stop entertainment. And for the first time, Liwa Village will extend into the new year, offering unforgettable New Year’s celebrations under the stars, and out in the desert. Here’s a look at what’s in store… CULTURE // LIWA FESTIVAL
LIWA COMES ALIVE
Experience the desert like never before at Liwa Village…
ust a short drive beyond Abu Dhabi, there’s a whole new world waiting to be discovered. Approximately 150km southwest of the city, the Liwa desert unfolds in a seemingly endless sea of towering dunes and serene oases. For most of the year, this landscape is a quiet escape for adventurous off-roaders and camel herds. But this month, the desert transforms, as Liwa Village Festival brings life and energy to this remote corner of the UAE, offering a rare blend of traditional Emirati heritage and modern experiences from December 13, 2024 to January 4, 2025.
SOUK
Liwa Village’s heritage-inspired Souk district is crafted to reflect the look and feel of old-world Emirati traders’ homes. Enjoy local dining options, pick up unique finds at the spice market, or dive into the art of henna painting. There’s also an array of workshops focusing on traditional Emirati crafts, allowing guests to learn skills that have been passed down through generations. For those seeking a truly exclusive experience, a VIP majlis offers a private space to unwind and enjoy the festival in style.
TARAB LIWA
As day turns to night, the village comes alive at Tarab Liwa, the entertainment hub where music and performances take centre stage. Concerts and stage shows bring top artists to the desert sands, making for unforgettable evenings under the stars. This year’s lineup features an exciting roster of artists, with Mutref Al Mutref and Mohammed Albakri kicking things off on December 14, followed by Hamad El Ameri and Aryam on December 21. Fans of Aseel Hameem and Mahmod Alturky can catch them on December 28, and Abadi Al Johar and Rahma Riad will ring in the New Year with a special performance on December 31.
WANASA
This family-friendly area is packed with exciting games, attractions, and off-road tracks, making it a place where kids and parents alike can embrace adventure. Whether it’s racing around the tracks, trying out new games, or just soaking in the lively atmosphere, the Wanasa zone ensures there’s no shortage of ways to have fun.
VISITOR TIPS
This event blends Emirati traditions, family-friendly attractions, and thrilling adventures, making it an experience suitable for everyone. Dress respectfully, keeping in mind the local culture. Temperatures drop at night, so be sure to dress warmly in the evening.

An immersive new attraction is opening this December… CULTURE // BUBBLE
WHAT’S POPPIN’?
Abu Dhabi has a plethora of new openings coming up in the next couple of years. On Saadiyat Island alone we have the Natural History Museum, Zayed National Museum, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, to name a few.
But while we wait for these megaprojects, we have one spot opening its doors on Manarat Al Saadiyat this December, and it promises to keep our Instagram accounts busy for a while… Bubble Planet is an immersive new experience and it’s sure to be poppin’. It
first launched in Milan before floating away and landing in other bustling cities around the globe, including London, Barcelona, Brussels, New York, Toronto, and Singapore. And now, finally, the fun is all set to land in Abu Dhabi.
Meet Bubble Planet
On the inside, you can expect as many as 11 rooms packed with immersive fun, and of course, plenty of opportunities for you to get your phone out and give in to your snap-happy instincts. We’re quite confident that you don’t have to be under a certain height requirement to enjoy, which means the experience is ideal for both little ones and adults.
You’ll also go on a journey through the world of bubbles, all uniquely themed across almost a dozen rooms.
Encounter balloons, both big and small, soap balloons, lights shaped like balloons, and even heart-shaped balloons - perfect
for that photo with your partner.
We haven’t floated on over yet, but if the experience is anything like what the renders showcase, we can expect a supersized bubble bath ball pit room, a world of illusions which will transport you to a dream land and a room with swings, where you will be one with the balloons through a cool VR experience.
P.S. Don’t forget to look up… Bubble Planet, Manarat Al Saadiyat, Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi, Dhs95 adults, Dhs75 children from December 15. bubble-planet.com

TEAMLAB PHENOMENA: 8 FACTS AHEAD OF ITS OPENING
This immersive stunner will redefine Abu Dhabi’s megaproject landscape…
After a long wait, we’re at the brink of the opening of teamLab Phenomena in Abu Dhabi. Here are eight interesting facts ahead of the big opening:
01 The incredible sensory phenomenon has been billed as “the home of infinite curiosity”, and will be located at the ambitious Saadiyat Cultural District on Saadiyat Island. The District itself is planned to house Zayed National Museum and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, in addition to teamLab.
02 The Abu Dhabi megaproject is created by globally-acclaimed, Tokyobased art collective teamLab. teamLab was created in Japan in 2001, and consists of a team of artists, programmers, engineers, animators, mathematicians and architects – and that should give you an idea of how minutely the Abu Dhabi facility has been planned.
03
TeamLab Phenomena
Abu Dhabi will be designed as a multi-sensory exploration of experiential artworks. What that means is, rather than displaying completed works of art like your regular museum would, the art you’ll see at teamLab will evolve and form in your presence. The environment produces phenomena and stabilises their structureand it’s these stabilised phenomena that create the artworks.
TeamLab Phenomena
04
Abu Dhabi will cover an area of 17,000 sq.m on Saadiyat Island, offering inspirational spaces at a wondrous intersection of art and technology. The artist’s impression-backed imagery really presents the building as an architectural spectacle –and that’s before you even step inside to embark on a journey like you’ve never been on before.
05 The collections within will be curated around a theme of ‘environmental phenomena’ – with a striking feature of this engineering, architectural and artistic marvel is that every piece will be designed to respond to its specific local environment and the interactions it encounters. What does this mean? For one, every guest will yield a different experience, as exhibits grow and evolve mimicking the subject matter.
06
The exhibits at teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi are said to incorporate all five senses. Some people that have already been call it a sensory overload, while many others call it fulfilling and joyous.
They describe the experience as being “transcendental”, “therapeutic” and “surreal”.
07
While the lion’s share of the art at teamLab are formed and influenced by their environment, objects that maintain a stable structure on their own at teamLab are stones and man-made creations.
Elements like air, water, and light that play a huge role in our daily lives are transformed by their environment into unique phenomena that become works of art, whose boundaries of their existence are ambiguous and continuous. So the works of art will continue to exist as long as their environment is maintained, and on the contrary, they disappear if the environment is not maintained.

WORLD TENNIS LEAGUE ACTION RETURNS TO ETIHAD ARENA
Serving up an ace show both on and off the court…
December is that time of year when the festive feels are upon us, and while that means hopping on a jet to some, and walks on the corniche to others, some of us are itching for a good show during the slower time of the year. So the great news is, Season 3 of World Tennis League is about to come to town, and with it, a galaxy of tennis stars and accomplished superstars from the world of music from December 19 to 22 at the Etihad Arena.
Last year’s edition of the World Tennis League brought some of the biggest names to town from both the men’s and women’s game. We witnessed stunning performances on court from stars such as World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev, 5-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek and women’s No. 3 Aryna Sabalenka, who brought their signature, high-intensity style of play to Yas Island. They represented four exciting teams, namely the Honor FX Falcons, Hawks, PBG Eagles and the SG Mavericks Kites, who will gun for glory once again at the ‘Greatest Show on Court’ – gunning for glory. As opposed to a grand slam or Master’s tournament, World Tennis League will be staged in a round-robin format.

POWER PLAYERS
Leading names descending on the UAE capital will include Polish women’s world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and this year’s champion in Flushing, Aryna Sabalenka, as well as top names from the ATP including 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, and hugely entertaining Aussie, Nick Kyrgios, who will be returning to the court after a hiatus. If you’re wondering about the collective star power of the confirmed line up, Abu Dhabi will welcome two Olympic gold medallists, five Grand Slam champions, six of the top 12 male
players, and six of the top 10 women’s tennis players. Talk about star power.
But there’s more. This past summer’s winner of the Venus Rosewater Dish in London, Czech Barbora Krejčíková and Women’s Doubles Gold Medalist at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Jasmine Paolini from Italy will make their debut at the World Tennis League. The confirmed lineup also includes Women’s Doubles Silver Medalist at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Mirra Andreeva, immensely popular World No. 4 and Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open champion Elena Rybakina, Paula Badosa (Women’s World No. 19), and Caroline Garcia (Women’s World No. 36).
On the men’s side, 2024 US Open runner-up Taylor Fritz, World No. 8 Hubert Hurkacz, and 2022 US Open finalist, Casper Ruud will also be in town, and you’ll be able to see the very exciting Greek, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and his single-handed backhand in action.
WHAT’S
While Season 2 attracted 20,000 attendees and was broadcast live across 125 countries, the post-play concerts were just as big of a deal.
This year, the UAE capital will welcome R’n’B icon Akon, and the chartbuster factory known for hits such as Smack That, Lonely, Locked Up and Beautiful, will put on Akon-cert you won’t want to miss. He’ll take to the stage on December 21 with reggae superstar Sean Paul, who once dominated radiowaves with hits such as Get Busy and Temperature
Kicking things off after play on December 19 will be Canadian rockstar Bryan Adams, who will be bringing more than his first real six-string to town with hits such as Summer of ’69 and Run to You all but guaranteeing an arena-shaking performance. The following evening, you can roll back the years with Chicago native Anastacia in a nostalgia-inducing performance.
Off-season tournaments have become increasingly popular in several sports, providing a valuable training window for players once they’re finished with their on-tour commitments. While that almost means being on the go 12 months of the year, it’s helped build exhibition sport significantly, proving for an absorbing entertainment spectacle and letting you watch doubles and team combinations that you’d never otherwise be able to witness in a sport that chiefly has competitors going for the win on their own.
With free entry for children, events such as the World Tennis League also help grow interest in the sport, from the grassroots to the massroots. See you there this December…

Aryna Sabalenka

FIM WORLD SUPERCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE BACK
Welcoming the roars, cheers and champions for a second edition…
Motorsport-mad fans in the UAE capital will want to pop on their helmets and welcome the FIM World Supercross Championships to town, as the gripping adrenaline-fuelled extravaganza returns to the UAE capital for a second edition on December 4, at Etihad Arena. The Championships will serve as the ideal precursor to the season-ending Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend, ready to take centre stage from December 5 to 8 with the world watching.
What’s On?
You’ll be able to witness the best talent on two wheels, delivering all the off-road motorcycle racing thrills when the Etihad Arena transforms into a dirt-track to host these high-flying daredevils. Last November’s remarkable show of supreme
skill and electrifying excitement just might be topped this time around, with the season finale in 2024 promising even more action, with 32 riders vying for two championship titles. You’ll be able to witness a highoctane spectacle with both the WSX and SX2 champions being crowned on the day, and tickets will also let you meet the riders and enjoy a pit lane walk, available as an add on.
Crash course (or not) …
If you’re wondering what Supercross is all about, here we go: it’s a show of motorsport blended with death-defying stunts, roaring engines and an adrenaline-fuelled world of extreme athleticism. Contrary to a rider on the street, these stuntmen rarely take the saddle on their
mean machines, and perform stunt after stunt to captivate audiences around the world with a stunning blend of precision, athleticism, and showmanship. The sport has traversed the planet in recent years, both in terms of events staged as well as the talent it has attracted. Riders from around the world bring their signature styles, skill levels and personalities to the dirt, contributing to the global appeal of supercross.

COME HOME TO Hyderabad
This glittering time capsule will tell you – the nawabs never left…
If you walk down the lanes of Laad Bazaar, there is a sense of otherworldliness. Maybe because this city is not exactly top of the bucket list lot of holiday destinations – the lines in Schengen visa offices are long and treacherous, but the charms of European civilisation and Balearic island parties never wear off. If, however, you’re looking for an urban adventure steeped deeply in history and comforting unfamiliarity, this is it.
Once upon a time, Hyderabad was a city of nawabs – rulers, royalty and the red-blooded elite made of status, money and envy, who lived in havelis and kept
armies of servants. The early nawabs were real governors of the Mughal Empire, but in later years a social evolution transformed them into glorified socialites, families with generational wealth and genetic ties to those who reigned over a princely state.
The Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, was the last nawab to survive in the new Republic of India, where princely states were stripped of power and unified democracy took its place. He was shockingly wealthy – he used the Jacob Diamond as a paperweight and had a Rolls Royce in his entourage of cars solely to pick up the palace groceries. His governance was golden, and all that’s gone now, but the imprint of that era will perhaps never fade.
EAT THIS…
Mutton Dum Biryani at Shadab (with jalebi after)
The most authentic Hyderabadi biryani only comes with mutton – a sentiment the locals feel quite stongly about. Head over to Shadab, located near the High Court, for a steaming plate of flavourful biryani laden with melt-in-your-mouth chunks of meat and fluffy basmati rice. Spots like Shadab serve throughout the day, no matter what time you show up at. While you’re in the area, skip over to the jalebi stalls pitched outside the High Court walls for some dessert – you’ll find the best jalebi in the whole of Hyderabad here, and paired with malai or cream from any bakery, it’s divine.
Bonus tip: Gatecrash a wedding – you won’t be disappointed
Paya Nahari Haleem
Paya Nahari at Nayab and Irani Chai at Ruman
Irani chai holds another story of legacy, brought to Hyderbad by Persian immigrants and made popular in the streetside stalls. It’s a sweet kick of energy, a bomb of sugar and caffeine in a small glass, over-simmered for a creamy, rich texture and flavour – this is the Hyderabadi pick-me-up. Paired with nahari, a slow-cooked stew of goat feet, aromatics and a lot of fat, it’s the breakfast of champions – pick a sunny morning and dip some munshi naan at Nayab, with chai at Ruman afterwards.
Haleem at Pista House
A mix of meat, wheat and ghee, and slowcooked to perfect, creamy, fusion, Haleem is a porridge of sorts and is a culinary staple of the local cuisine. It’s a hearty meal you can have on its own, and Pista House is the most popular spot to savour it. They have branches all over the city, so you can pick one closest to you and smash a few bowls. Don’t forget to garnish with lemon and fried onions.
EXPLORE THIS…
Laad Bazaar and Charminaar
Locally, Laad Bazaar is called the bazaar of the brides – you’ll find every single thing a Nizami bride could possibly need, right here, from the jewellery on her neck to the canopy of her bridal party and it’s a wonder, how such a big universe can fit into four or five small, winding lanes. Here, the lights are bright and glass bangles, bead bangles and sequined bangles glitter and clink from open displays.
Bangle-making is a historic craft of the city – preserved in these very shops, as one shopkeeper tells me. These adornments are moulded and cast in workshops above the displays, where women bustle and keepers offer cups of chai. Outside of his shop, at the edge of the bazaar, the Charminaar stands, the most recognisable symbol of Hyderabad.
Bonus tip: This is the best place to take home some bangles of your own
Salar Jung Museum
The collection at Salar Jung, one of India’s three national museums, is really the private collection of one man – the namesake Salar Jung III, a minister of the Nizam and a near fanatical patron of fine art. Over a period of 35 years, he spent his enormous wealth collecting rare relics, artefacts, antiques, manuscripts, paintings, sculptures and every imaginable element of tangible art possible, from the The Double Statue of Mephistopheles & Margaretta to a personal dressing table of Queen Victoria. You’ll need a whole day to cover the entire museum
HOW TO GET THERE: Emirates flies direct to Hyderabad starting at Dhs1,270 or IndiGo at Dhs1,141.

STAYCATION SPOTLIGHT: FIVE LUXE
The third installment of hedonistic hotspot FIVE looks to provide an elevated experience on JBR. But does it?
LOCATION
On a prime stretch of sand on the JBR beachfront, FIVE LUXE is sandwiched between the Rixos Premium and RitzCarlton. It’s got a grand entrance off The Walk, and we know we’re in the right place when we spot the row of rainbow-hued supercars parked out front.
LOOK AND FEEL
The bright and breezy lobby area has instant wow-factor. It’s got the same glamourous and modern feel as that of FIVE Palm Jumeirah, largely due to the triple height glass window that faces out to the central swimming pool, accentuating the shimmering marble floor, and oceanicinspired glass chandelier that cascades dramatically from the ceiling. It’s all lovely and modern, and the calming neutral and seaside-inspired hues ooze Miami-cool.
FOOD AND DRINK
The ninth floor houses most of the culinary action, and the newly opened Tête à Tête features photo-friendly décor, a ceiling covered in lavender and jewellery box private dining rooms, but also a beautiful terrace where white wire chairs with
Tiffany blue cushions are arranged to face the sea. Here, fine French fare like juicy escargot in a rich garlic butter can be enjoyed either a la carte or sharing style. Enjoying similarly fabulous views on the 9th floor is Paradiso, a Barcelona export that’s renowned as one of the world’s best bars. Signature cocktails, priced from Dhs85 and creatively packaged into spaceships, trains and kryptonite green, are perhaps a bit more style than substance, but are befitting of this wonderlandinspired bar.
ROOMS
There’s almost two dozen room categories to choose from at FIVE LUXE, with a mix of hotel rooms and serviced apartments ranging from studios to four bedrooms. We check-in to the ‘Gorgeous Sea View’ room, a spacious 60 square metre space that follows the same contemporary, grown-up feel of the rest of the resort. We love the big seafacing balcony, that overlooks the pool and makes you feel like you’re right in the heart of the action, and the grand mini-bar - one of the room’s crowning features.
FACILITIES
There’s a welcome balance of detox and retox at FIVE LUXE, and whether you’re here to party hard or chill out, there’s something for everyone. For the latter, the ReFIVE Spa has plenty of appeal. The floor above is where you’ll find an indoor spa pool, with marble and gold accents, a bubbling vitality pool, and double day beds for chillingout post massage.
Those looking for a livelier spot to perch up poolside should head to Playa Pacha. A space to see and be seen, it’s dotted with the iconic Pacha cherry motif, and comes with three pools – including one for in-house guests and families, a middle option, and one right in front of the DJ booth. We pick a two-person day bed in the shallows of the water – and enjoy grazing on bites like crispy squid and a burrata salad, swaying to the rhythmic tunes that make you want to stay until sunset.
RATES
Entry level Superior Rooms start from Dhs1,575.
VERDICT
FIVE LUXE brings together the best bits from its existing hotels, and the resulting property is lively, but less party hard than its predecessors. It laces haute hedonism through its culinary and leisure experiences, ensuring it stays true to the brand DNA. But the elevated, grown-up vibe of FIVE LUXE is drawing a new crowd of guests that like to dip in and out of the party.
