Lucky guests and What’s On readers enjoyed a supreme seafood spread...

On the evening of Wednesday, February 21, What’s On teamed up with the minds behind Finz at the Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi to introduce guests to a scintillating seafood feast at our latest What’s On the Menu event. The 14-course experience was served at the Rotana group’s pioneering property, and diners were taken on an exciting voyage of seafood specialties against the marvellous backdrop of Abu Dhabi’s Al Maryah Island.

What was on the menu?

We sailed through Chef German Huerta and team’s tastebud-teasing, one-of-a-kind, specially curated menu, in the company of dishes such as the balik salmon, neat portions of sea bass with wasabi Leche de Tigre, kumquat and shiso crisp, and a perennial favourite, the Canadian lobster, with quinoa crisp and viege sauce. To round things off on a sweet note, guests enjoyed a unique combination of mango-lime magnum with chili powder, strawberries and merengue with basil cremaux and clementine with camembert.

Remind me why I love what I do. Of course, the main event – crowning the winners of the awards across a breadth of leisure, entertainment and restaurant categories – is what we’re all there for. But standing under the bright lights of the W Abu Dhabi - Yas Island’s twinkling façade, surrounded by a 500-strong audience of the capital’s leading hospitality lights, is what makes the night so special to me. The excitement, the energy, the anticipation… guests reminiscing on the year gone by, animatedly sharing plans for the forthcoming months. This year, more than ever before, I felt such a positive feeling about the capital’s triumphs from the last twelve months, and the glittering future it’s confidently moving towards. There’s also something particularly touching about seeing the way brands show up for one another. There’s a real industry-wide respect and understanding that the way we grow is by lifting each other up. And to even play a small part in that, is a part of my job that gives me immeasurable joy.

We dined, we applauded, we celebrated – and we crowned winners across some 42 categories to recognise the crème de la crème of Abu Dhabi’s shining stars. And you can relive it all with us from p15.

This JBR-based oyster slurping shack is frills-free and simply finished, with loads of picnic benches dotted across the grass. THE HIDDEN DINING GEMS EDITION

When it comes to South Indian cuisine in Karama, it’s Woodlands or nothing for me. I have been going since I was a kid. My family and I were known by the staff and the owner, and were always greeted with a huge smile. And despite the fact the owner has left Dubai and the staff have all changed, it doesn’t stop me from returning. My go-to food order? Crispy sada dosa with sambar and the red coconut dry chutney. Pure deliciousness.

Bayt Al Wakeel

Located inside the textile souk in Deira, the restaurant-meets-museum is one of my favourite eateries (that I’m not gatekeeping). Bayt Al Wakeel has a pretty cool history – housed in what was originally one of the first shipping offices in the UAE. Their food is delicious, serving up quintessential Arabian dishes that you can eat next to the water and watch the abras sail across the Creek. wakeel.ae

Found at Mövenpick JLT, this isn’t the most hidden haunt on this list but I’m keeping it because it’s the most sparkling example of honest, French bistro flavours you’ll find in Dubai. There’s barely a day that goes by where I don’t think impure thoughts about their steak frites robed in the unnecessarily lascivious signature sauce. I fell in love with this hand-pulled noodle joint instantly. It’s not fancy, frilly, or fashionably overpriced, but San Wan is full of love – for food, for purity of craft, and for a joyful bowl of noodles. Everything is fresh and made in-house, including the divine chilli oil. @sanwan.dxb

Mercury Cafeteria

The Eastern European regulars of the no-frills Mercury Cafeteria confirm its status as a hidden gem. Located across the street from the Russian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, the eatery has a cute and cozy interior. There’s an impressive variety of traditional bites for well under Dhs50. My tip – order Uzbekistan’s unofficial national dish, the Uzbek plov. Long-grain rice, lamb chunks and veggies, it’s a proper party in a pot. @mercurycafeteria

Itadaku

For Japanese food lovers, Itadaku is likely the closest you’ll get to Japan in Dubai. The authentic family-run restaurant, overseen by a welcoming Japanese couple, is hidden inside Wasl Vita Mall in Jumeirah 1. It’s so authentic, every single ingredient on the menu is from Japan. Try the hamachi sashimi, kushiyaki shiitake, prawn tempura, and sweet potato robata and thank me later.

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their must-try restaurants and standout attractions, to favourite staycations and hidden gems. This month, we chat to Butheina Kazim (@butheinahk), founder of Cinema Akil (@cinemaakil), all-things-arthouse-extraordinaire, and Dubai dweller for over 30 years. Here she shares some of her top spots that you need on your radar.

I love spending time at the home I’ve created. But if I had to pick my favourite staycation, it would be the Park Hyatt Dubai. It’s one of my favourite hotels in Dubai because of the architecture, the facilities, and the sanctuary being by the Dubai Creek waterfront, which is one of the most underestimated spots in the city.

I truly believe there is no bad time to take a walk around the neighbourhoods in Satwa. If you wander around the back alleys and in between the houses, you will find not only some of the most interesting architecture in the city but also shops and little secrets within every corner.

Aside from visiting Alserkal Avenue and coming to Cinema Akil, I think everyone should experience spending time in the desert, especially if you have friends who are from town and know their way around. Everyone brings food and you start a bonfire, which is a beautiful way to appreciate how close the city is to nature.

A family favourite restaurant that I have been going to for decades now is Shabestan at the Radisson Blu in Deira. The experience is best accompanied by a walk around the neighbourhood and on the creek before heading for a hearty Iranian meal.

When the weather is nice, walking in the UAE is underestimated. One of my favourite walks is along the beach near the Mandarin Oriental. In that area, you can find what I like to call ‘neighbourhood beaches’ –patches of public coastline with connected boardwalks where you can easily wander for a few hours.

In Deira, near the Somali Mosque, there’s a street, almost like a strip, that has some of the best Ethiopian coffee shops, eateries, and braiding spots. This was a really cool find because it’s not only amazing coffee but also super cute and charming stores within the old shopping area of Dubai.

A long-standing ally of regional creative talent, What’s On has supported the annual Art Dubai festival since its inception in 2006. Dubai’s biggest art festival, which takes place each March, has been celebrated on the cover of several issues of What’s On A couple of highlights have included a graffiti version of the Burj Al Arab in 2013, and a recreation of Andy Warhol’s iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans in 2015. But the March 2016 cover, our 455th issue, was a particularly poignant dual-themed cover, which coincided with the annual art extravaganza’s 10-year anniversary.

The Banksy-inspired visual firstly marked a decade of Art Dubai, which that year saw the works of 500 artists from 70 nationalities displayed. The multi-dimensional festival combines galleries with exhibitions, talks and interactive experiences to leave even the most entry level of art enthusiasts inspired.

But the lance-yielding delivery driver emblazoned onto a wall in the artsy Jumeirah neighbourhood also gave a nod to another feature from the March 2016 issue, the battle of the food deliveries. Always keen to be at the forefront of culinary trends in the city, What’s On put the most prominent food delivery companies at the time through their paces with an anonymous take-out test, to see which would come out on top.

Fast forward eight years, and the rise of Dubai’s food delivery services has only contributed to the city’s footprint on the global culinary map. The Dubai Gastronomy Industry Report, published by Dubai Economy and Tourism (DET) last month, highlighted just how astronomically this sector has accelerated. In 2023, food deliveries accounting for a staggering 87 per cent of all online purchases made by residents in Dubai. Increasingly sophisticated ordering apps, paired with the enhanced accessibility thanks to innovative cloud kitchens, have brought the world’s flavours to our doorsteps at the touch of a button. And whether you’re going out or staying in, you’ll find the latest from the city’s food scene in this issue from p35.

I hope their lasting impression is having a great meal and feeling good about it and wanting to return to try more from the menu. I always say good food has to be gut-friendly good, too.

There are more miles of amusement ride track in the UAE than there are miles of canal in Venice. Probably. We haven’t checked the maths, but the very fact that you briefly entertained it as plausible trivia, proves a point. There are three big-dipper-packed parks on Yas (including a number of record breakers), a clutch of white knuckle, jowl-flapping roller coasters at Dubai Parks and Resorts, IMG Worlds of Adventure, and a very unM25-like London Loop at Global Village. There’s even one inside the Dubai Hills Mall, in case the need for simulated oblivion strikes you mid-retail splurge. Our favourite one though, has to be the Madagascar-themed Mad Pursuit at Motiongate – your journey begins with a canon blast into fractally-interrupted blackness, and only gets more intense from there.

Lunchtime is all business at this pretty waterside spot

One of Abu Dhabi’s exciting new openings that’s descended on the capital in the last quarter of 2023, Mika brings elegant dining, Mediterranean classics, and signature Yas Marina elegance to the dining table.

We’re here on a breezy weekday afternoon to try their business lunch, and while a brief, yet elaborate menu has a dazzling line up of offerings on display, what is likely to catch your eye is an incredibly affordable price point. The twocourse option is served at Dhs95, while the three-course experience comes to you at Dhs125.

Before you take a seat either indoors amid earthy Mediterranean, elegance or on their sun-soaked terrace overlooking the marina, make sure to pop into their secret garden that houses some of their most fragrant, flavourful ingredients including on a flourishing lemon tree. You can even rent this space for private functions, and the first place it takes

us back to is a typical North American summer patio.

Back at our table on the terrace, we opt for their three-course business lunch option, and begin with the Mika house bread, a basketpacking a selection of sourdough, focaccia, and five-seed rye varieties. While this is the first time we’ve polished off the entire bread basket, the real star is the accompanying condiment, a dish of absolutely divine tomato sofrito and green chilli paste doused in olive oil. Our servers happily inform us two other tables have requested a second serving. A second starter arrives, the fresh, fruity plum carpaccio. Delicately sliced plum adorns their china, topped with a hearty mound of feta, taggiasche olives and strawberry that really underscore the Mediterranean factor in this afternoon’s business lunch.

With aged parmesan and truffle skillfully mixed in, this main is rich and wholesome, but the portion sizes are just right so you don’t fall prey to a gastronomyinduced mid-afternoon crash. For dessert, we’re recommended a timeless Italian classic, Nonna’s tiramisu. A surprisingly generous serving arrives, and this coffee infused, cushiony treat will have you poking, prodding and digging into it for a good while.

With attentive staff, enthusiastic management and a chef and owner that is proud of, passionate about, and committed to his craft, this fairly priced, generous, Mediterranean marvel, tucked away in Yas Marina is guaranteed to have you going back for more.

Michelin Star dining at one of Abu Dhabi’s iconic landmarks…

One of the biggest takings from the 2024 Michelin Star unveiling in Abu Dhabi was the single new entry onto the Michelin Star list: Erth. Curious to see if this restaurant is really worth its salt – or star – it’s where we find ourselves on a cool Monday evening.

The setting, within Abu Dhabi’s Qasr Al Hosn, is placid and enchanting, set amid planes and an idyllic lagoon at the capital’s oldest stone structure. True to its name, the restaurant aesthetic is best described as… earthy. With muted tones and dimmed lights, Erth draws you in with a calm energy, one that surrounds a clientele who evidently enjoy their alfresco experience as much as, if not more, than the indoor seating. As you arrive at the property, you’re greeted by architecture that tells stories spanning generations. Sink into a plush chair and marvel as efficient service staff dart around the property in a way that’s attentive, but not overly so.

As we’re seated, we’re informed Erth has just put out a new menu, and we’re eager to see what it packs. For starters, we’re served the beetroot and chami salad (Dhs55), roasted beetroot slices served with Greek feta and chami cheese crumble. Topped with toasted pine nuts and a drizzle of honey, this is a light starter whose purpose is simply to open your palate. So if you’re expecting a breadbasket style opener, this isn’t it. Light and flavourful, the pine nuts add great character. Other options on their starter menu include the healthiest salad on Erth (Dhs45) with grapefruit, avocado, and lime achar vinaigrette.

The main arrives, and rightly, it’s included under the ‘Indulge’ section of Erth’s new menu. Enter the Farid-inspired ravioli fusion (Dhs85), a savoury combination of slow cooked lamb and vegetables with whole-wheat regag bread and lamb emulsion sauce. Served in neat yet satisfying pockets of four, the creamy sauce will have you scooping and savouring till the last drop. For dessert, we’re recommended the

chami cheese pannacotta (Dhs50), a silky pudding blended with vanilla and caviaresque mango pearls. There it is again. A quick search suggests chami is one of the Emirates’ oldest cheese varieties, a form of cottage cheese. It blends in well with starters and desserts alike.

Erth also serves up an array of dishes under its Share section. Pick from the loumi black rice with char-grilled oyster mushroom (Dhs50), or the Emirati spiced hasselback potatoes (Dhs35), to name just a couple.

Chef Faisal Al Harmoudi turns his attention to a peaceful corner of the city, Mina Zayed, for exciting seafood concept, Ryba. When we arrive, Abu Dhabi’s own storm makes its presence felt intermittently, with strong gusts knocking over terrace chairs, potted plants, and more in the vicinity.

Once indoors, however, things couldn’t be calmer. Friendly staff inform us the restaurant was named Ryba, Russian for ‘fish’, inspired by the chef’s travels.

Ryba is airy and spacious, dimly lit with a grown-up feel. With generous seating on the outdoor patio ideal for calmer days, we’re envisioning this a spot for memorable afternoon lunches here with the vastness of the Arabian Sea providing the ideal backdrop.

The Inshad master and ‘Sheikh of Egyptian chanters’ will take to the Louvre Abu Dhabi for a soulful presentation of The Carpenter’s Daughter, a series of famous poems in praise of the Prophet Muhammad, Peace Be Upon Him, from Egypt, Sudan, Tunisia, and the Maghreb region.

El-Tohamy is known well for his skill in mixing chanting in classical Arabic with a variety of musical cultures. It may be a fusion, but the originality of each art form is preserved in its traditional manner. The performance will take place for one day only, from 9.30pm to 11.30pm. POSTERS FOR GAZA

A powerful artistic rally against injustice

In a stirring display of solidarity, Zawyeh Gallery in Alserkal Avenue has unveiled its latest group exhibition, Posters for Gaza. This compelling showcase features the works of 26 talented Palestinian and Arab artists, each contributing their unique voice to shed light on the ongoing atrocities in the Gaza Strip.

The heart of the exhibition beats with an impassioned call for a cease-fire and the recognition of the fundamental rights of Palestinians to live freely. What makes this exhibition particularly poignant is that four of the participating artists hail from Gaza, lending an even more personal and heartfelt dimension to their creations.

Uniformly sized and designed in a simplified manner, the posters reflect uniqueness in terms of style, materials, and the underlying narratives. Steering away from the digital norm, participating artists poured their effort into producing those posters, utilising a variety of materials, including acrylics, inks, charcoal, collage, and mixed media.

Tapping into the posters’ subjects, the themes vary, yet all the artists call for humanity to prevail. Themes that address human rights violations in Gaza, are evident in the works All Rights Not Reserved by Hosni Radwan and We Are Doing Fine in Gaza… What About You? by Khaled El Haber. Gazan artist Mohammed Joha encapsulates anxiety and worries towards his family living in Gaza in his poster Sleepless, and the heavy weight of grief and melancholy also manifests in Gazan artist Hazem Harb’s poster. Wadei Khaled and Iraqi artist Reda Alyasari, focus on the warmth of family and motherhood.

A nod to history, the exhibition revives a longstanding tradition in Palestinian activism. Political posters, a potent form of expression, were prolifically produced during the ‘70s and ‘80s by the Palestinian Liberation Organisation, drawing contributions from Palestinian, Arab, and international artists. These visual narratives played a pivotal role in garnering global support for the justice of the Palestinian cause, championing values of freedom, dignity, resilience, and the unyielding pursuit of independence.

Original posters are for sale from Dhs3,000. Poster copies are available to purchase online for Dhs300 with proceeds providing much-needed medical aid to affected children in Gaza through the Palestinian Red Crescent.

What’s

On speaks to the director and stars of Dune: Part Two

ou’d have been given galactically long odds on Dune: Part Two being a stinker. Sure, it is a sequel and they are traditionally tricky customers, but with the six-Oscar wins and box office blitz of the opening entry, the almost universally praised performance of its cast, the saga being led by a director who is widely regarded as one of the modern greats – and the fact that this follow up is taken from the same source material as the first... Dune: Part Two had the implied dynastic security of a royal heirdom.

But it still would have been a brave soul insisting ahead of time, that this sequel would dramatically improve upon the first. And yet here we stand, at the ornate gates of a science fiction masterpiece. With the run time-consuming chores of backstory building and character establishing swept into the sands of Arrakis, director Denis Villeneuve has two hours and 46 minutes to burrow, giant-worm-like, into the spiceladen narrative dunes of Frank Herbert’s opus.

There’s space to go deep and lock swords with musings of prophecy and destiny, revenge and freedom, colonialism, hegemony, and rebellion. There are, if you choose to see them, religious overtures and many

discernable references to Middle Eastern culture (look at the language). And on a more intimate level, we are invited to grapple with the frailties of love, familial favouritism, harmony with nature, utilitarianism ad absurdum, and faith relationships with pariah messiahs. And it’s all set against the haunting beauty of a wild desert planet, much of it filmed right here, amongst Liwa’s own shifting sandscape.

This movie begins where the last one left us: following the almost-wholesale decimation of his family, our protagonist Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), has found sanctuary with the marginalised indigenous population of Arrakian ‘Fremen’. The more time Paul spends with his hosts, the more he seems to fit the Messianic mould of their prophesied liberator, Lisan al Gaib. At least for a certain contingent of them.

The prophecy, whether Paul truly believes in it or not, provides him an opportunity to exact revenge on the Harkonnens, who so nearly extinguished his entire bloodline. And should he choose to use the prophecy for his own selfish ends, his ultimate goal would mean the incidental fulfilment of the prophecy. Freedom, and the vanquishing of tyranny.

I was in the rare and extremely fortunate position of being able to share, what I took out of the movie with its director. I asked Denis whether his own beliefs around “free will, flavoured the movie’s dealing with prophecy and destiny”. Because those were the subjects playing on my mind long after the credits rolled. His answer suggested a focus shift.

“If you look at the movie, you can absolutely view it from a scientific point of view where you can explain almost everything. It was important for me that it’s more about characters struggling with the impact of colonialism than anything else”.

Colonialism in the desert. For those watching in this region and beyond, it’ll be almost impossible not to draw certain parallels with what’s going on in a galaxy not so far far away.

Villeneuve is often praised for his grandscale cinematography, but this movie demonstrates his skill at manipulating the other end of the spectrum too. In literature, it’s relatively straightforward to communicate the inner workings of a character to an audience. You can just spell out their thoughts, right there on the paper, which may of course be contrary to

what they say, and the way they behave. It’s difficult to replicate in cinema without it emerging as contrived. Instead, filmmakers and actors have to rely on subtle facial gestures, conversations with confidants and the vacuum of inaction.

Credit must go to Timothée Chalamet for this too, he puts down a (what seems unfair, at 28, to say) career-defining performance. Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem and Dave Bautista all contribute magnificently, but it’s an unrecognisable Austin Butler who steals the support crown with his layered portrayal of a nepobaby sociopath. Multiple Oscar nominations are once again all but assured.

Speaking to Brolin, I asked him which of his huge scenes he was most concerned about getting right. He responded with “you never really know which ones you’re going to be nervous about. You think you’re gonna be nervous

about the battle scenes, and then you end up doing it, and you just want to be in the right condition. There was a scene that I did with Timothy in the cave. And I got super nervous before it. But it’s what excites you about acting because it just happens. You’re motivated by the fear. You want to get on a helicopter and leave. But there’s no helicopter. And then finally, once you settle into the scene, you go, wow, there’s something really special about this. But you’d never know when it’s coming.”

I asked Dave Bautista what aspects he enjoyed most about working in science fiction. He replied: “I just look forward to interesting layered characters. I never really set out to be a sci fi star. I’m always pursuing working with great directors and great actors. That’s how I measure my success. I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of some great franchises.”

FASTING AND FITNESS

Wanting to keep up with your workout regime? We tapped 1Rebel Master Trainer Sarah Stoneley for the dos and don’ts of working out during Ramadan…

How do you advise working out during Ramadan, considering the sudden change in diet and rest patterns?

It depends on your usual training schedule and intensity. Working out during Ramadan is not bad, but it is not the time to try anything new or too intense. Drop the intensity down, listen to your body but some gentle exercise will be good for you and for your mood during this time.

Is it possible to make progress during Ramadan, or is it more a question of

maintaining your healthy habits despite the change in lifestyle?

Realistically, it’s not going to be the best month to improve strength and fitness while your eating and sleeping pattern is so different. But that’s not to say you should put your goals on hold. Find ways to adapt your workouts to stay on track without pushing your body too hard. Focus on maintaining healthy habits so that you don’t feel like you take 10 steps back. My advice is to reduce the intensity and/or duration of your usual

training schedule but don’t stop completely. It is also a good time to sub in a light walk or something like a Pilates class where you might usually be doing something more high energy.

Do you advise easing back into your regular routine after Ramadan, or can you go straight back to normal with your calorie intake and sleep schedule? After fasting, you must give your body time to adjust back into your usual schedule. Listen to your body and be kind to yourself. You may lose a little strength or cardio fitness but just getting your consistency back with your higher energy levels and muscle memory… it won’t take long! Depending on how much you reduce your training will depend on how quickly you build it back up but remember: quality over quantity here, focus on getting in a few high quality sessions in per week when getting back into it, and just build up from there.

What would be three tips do you have for those working out while fasting?

1. Keep moving, drop the intensity and if you need to pull back slightly that’s ok. As I’ve said, the main thing is to listen to your body.

2. Appreciate what your body CAN do. Be positive and try and do the things you enjoy to keep you on track.

3. Always let your trainer know if you are fasting. We are there to support you in any way we can so if we know you are fasting we can help you get the most out of the workouts you are doing.

POFF-SEASON BLISS IN Salalah

Laura Coughlin travels to Oman’s southernmost province to experience Salalah outside of its famous Khareef season, and finds it better, and more beautiful, than ever

lenty of guidebooks wax poetic about summertime in Salalah. Temperatures dip, the rain clouds loom and there’s a magical mist in the air. It’s a hugely popular time, when visitors fly – or drive – down from nearby countries to embrace the cooler, fresher climate while the rest of the GCC roils in the heat of summer. I’ve done it myself and revelled in the uniqueness of a misty and damp August.

But there’s more to this sub-tropical spot than its mystical monsoons. The winter months – November to March –are drier in Salalah and are technically considered the off-season for tourism. I kind of love that post-Khareef exhale when the tourists leave and hotel prices drop. In fact, it’s pretty close to perfect, whether sunbathing on secluded beaches, wading through crystal-clear rockpools, or picnicking by serene waterfalls, Salalah unveils its best without the rain or the ruckus.

DIVE INTO THE OCEAN

During Khareef, the ocean waves are high, the currents dangerously strong and it’s generally prohibited to swim in the sea. Not so in winter. During the off-season, visitors are encouraged to take the plunge into the calmer seas. The ocean is marine-rich, too, making it a wonderful location for dolphin-spotting, snorkelling and scuba diving.

DO GO CHASING WATERFALLS

There’s an element of luck involved in seeing the cascading waterfalls of Salalah, and depends solely on the level of rainfall in the area during Khareef. But, if you are lucky – and you visit Wadi Darbat in the wake of monsoon season (around December to March) – you might just see the stunning waterfalls in full flow amid the green valleys.

WADE THROUGH WADIS AND ROCK POOLS

In summer, you’d have to share the wadis and rock pools with hordes of visiting families. In winter, it’ll be you and a handful of other intrepid explorers able to enjoy the aquamarine waters in peace.

PICNIC BY SWIMMING CAMELS

As UAE residents you’ll have seen your fair share of camels: in the desert; strolling beside a quiet road; or galloping at the racetrack. But never swimming. In Salalah’s Wadi Darbat, you’re bound to spot a camel or two making a beeline for the cool waters for a drink or to cross over to reach new pastures. It’s a surreal sight.

RAK TO THE future

A huge glow-up is underway in Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) has always been known as the ‘outdoorsy one’ of the seven emirates. A proud ambassador for the ‘North Face jacket and carabiner clip’ crowd. Its flavour – ‘hydration salts and... the taste of adventure’. It’s a reputation justly earned, RAK is of course home to the country’s highest peak – Jebel Jais, its chief UAE USPs include such pioneer pursuits as record-breaking zip-lines, wadi hikes, a via ferrata, a mountainside toboggan ride, survivalist camp, rockface abseiling and rugged off-roading routes.

But it is also an emirate that’s trekking through the foothills of some monumental change. The pulsing neon of Vegas is on the way, in the form of the Nevada-imported Wynn Hotel and Casino currently under construction on Al Marjan Island. Alongside that, the territory’s leisure portfolio is being given

a dramatic boost with the addition of such similarly twinkling luxury icons as Nikki Beach (which actually has two projects in the works), Le Meridien Marjan Island Resort & Spa, an eco-lead Earth Shore hotel and a Nobu Hotel.

The waterfront leisure development, Mina Al Arab represents an exciting epicentre of this RAK glow-up. Here you’ll find the just-opened Anantara Mina Al Arab. It’s almost impossible to refrain from remarking on the Maldivian-ness of its aesthetics. It’s deliberate of course. The dense thatch work on the top of its buildings, the boardwalk out to a string of over-water villas, the focus on minimumimpact hospitality, pristine cabana-strewn beach, and the island chakras of its exotic spa and conservation centre all feel plucked from an Indian Ocean atoll. But look a little deeper, and the local is just as authentically preserved. Those spacious over-water villas (featuring a plunge pool), sit atop a verdant patchwork of mangroves, placing you right in the centre of the indigenous wilderness. Amongst the stone spires of Jebel Jais, you’ll find a congregation of adventure attractions that are just the ticket for fidgety, gravityphobes. You can take a flight on the world’s longest zipline (from Dhs550), Jais Flight; hop aboard the Jais Sledder – an on-rails sled ride down the mountain (from Dhs50); or for something so palm-sweatily vertiginous that it’s outside the comfort zone of mountain goats, there’s the Jais Via Ferrata (from Dhs130). LOCATION

Hudayriyat Island is looking to establish itself as an adventurous escape, with attractions like glamping chalets, Circuit X adventure park, and soon-to-open Surf Abu Dhabi. But they’re upping the luxe with a new collection of villas, that push the island’s luxury quotient to a new level.

LOOK AND FEEL

With a private, 1.4m deep pool in your ‘backyard’, and only a brief strip of beach separating your island paradise from the vastness of the sea, the villas make you feel as though you’re worlds away from the city. From your private terrace, you get to drink in a view of the glorious sunset to the West, either lounging by the pool or laying in a hammock.

We’re struck by how spacious the villas are. Indoors, you can seat three in a roundtable setting with a three-seater couch and two seats in the drawing room. Ramadan is likely to begin on March 11 (depending on the sighting of the crescent moon), with Eid al-Fitr celebrations expected to commence on April 9. Even if you’re not personally observing Ramadan, it’s still important to be respectful towards those who are. Here’s what you need to know...

What is Ramadan?

The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is a time when Muslims around the world abstain from eating, drinking or smoking between sunrise and sunset.

Lasting about a month, it marks the time when the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Extra tarawih prayers are performed at the mosque throughout Ramadan and each evening 1/30th of the holy book is recited. By the end of Ramadan, observers will have read the entire Qur’an.

Why is Ramadan so important to Muslims?

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, considered mandatory by believers. The pillars are the framework by which Muslims everywhere

live, and Ramadan is considered the holiest time in the Islamic calendar. It is a time for prayer, reflection and religious devotion, to cleanse past sins and to focus on Allah through good deeds.

Why do Muslims fast?

Fasting, or sawn, loosely translates as ‘to refrain’. So during Ramadan Muslims commit to not eating, drinking or smoking during daylight hours. But sawn isn’t just about physical restraint, it also refers to bad thoughts, actions and words.

Ramadan is often a time to spend with family, breaking fast at sunset. The fast itself is intended to help Muslims learn about selfdiscipline and enable them to empathise with those who have less.

KNOW YOUR STUFF

Must everyone fast?

For Muslims, everyone is required to fast, but there are exceptions. Young children, pregnant women and the elderly and infirm are not required to fast due to possible health complications. Women on their monthly cycle do not fast, nor do people who are ill. If there is a temporary break in the fast, Muslims are required to make up the missed days after Ramadan. Non-Muslims are not required to fast. However, they should behave sensitively throughout Ramadan, and be consierate of those around them who may be fasting during the Holy Month.

Does everything close during the day?

Restaurants largely remain

open during Ramadan, but may change their opening times, so it’s best to call ahead at the venue. Everything tends to happen much later in the day during Ramadan. Malls stay open later than usual. Some restaurants also may stay open later, to accommodate for suhoor. Ramadan tents are also a popular addition to many restaurants and hotels.

Do I need to do anything differently during the day?

It’s important for everyone to dress and behave appropriately during the Holy Month. Even those who aren’t fasting should make sure that their clothes are modest, covering shoulders, chest and knees. Keep music levels down to a minimum and, of course, no public displays of affection.
