ENJOY A SENSATIONAL SUMMER AT

SOFITEL AL HAMRA BEACH RESORT

Wallet-friendly staycation rates from Dhs799, a pool day for less than Dhs100, and so much more...

L

ooking to escape the city for a slower pace of life? Then pack your bags for Ras Al Khaimah’s newest five-star stay, Sofitel Al Hamra Beach Resort. The new hotel promises golden beaches, Ras Al Khaimah’s largest swimming pool, and walletfriendly rates that make those memorable family moments all the more affordable. Unrolling against the picturesque Al Hamra Village on the Ras Al Khaimah coastline, it’s a fusion of Arabian touches and Sofitel’s signature French flair. The hotel features 292 guest rooms, which range in size from the classic king; plus a collection of 47 suites of one- and two-bedrooms, some of which come with their own private pools.

This summer, you can enjoy rates from Dhs799 for two adults and up to two children. You’ll bed down in one of the garden or sea facing rooms, all of which come with all the five-star amenities you’d expect. The rate also includes a delectable buffet breakfast at chic all-day dining destination, East. Head here for all your continental classics, where plates of pastries sit alongside extensive cold cuts and fresh fruits, but you can also request made-to-order eggs like omelets and Benedicts. For relaxation, guests are invited to take a dip in one of four beachfront swimming pools, all of which gaze out to the waters of the Arabian Gulf. Little ones can make the most of the colourful splash area with water slides, while adults can enjoy the swim-up

bar in the lagoon pool. The beachfront is also lined with a collection of loungers, perfect for enjoying the sun with tranquil sea views. If you’re checking-in, you’ll get to benefit from complimentary access to all of them. If you fancy heading down for the day, passes are priced at just Dhs99, fully redeemable. Back at East, an all-day dining restaurant in hues of smart emerald, that fuses Sofitel’s French roots with a menu of largely Levantine dishes, guests can enjoy a la carte dining through the week, plus a Saturday dinner buffet from 6.30pm to 10.30pm, and a family-style sharing menu on Sunday lunch from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Guests shouldn’t miss a drink at Veritas, a speakeasy-style drinking den hidden behind a bookshelf, decked out in jewel-hues and presenting an impressive list of signature Negronis. Then there’s the Sofitel Spa, a tranquil space where Clarins treatments including relaxing or energizing massages done in light, breezy treatment rooms. And as part of their opening deal, there’s a 30 per cent discount on treatments daily from 10am to 3pm.

EDITOR’S LETTER

IF YOU’RE FEELING A LITTLE BIT SUMMER FATIGUED…

I hear you. We’re in the throes of scorch season, and I find myself gazing out of the window, longing to get back to evening walks around my local neighbourhood, jogs along Kite Beach (first rule of running club: tell everyone you’re in a running club), and midday trips to the coffee shop close to What’s On HQ, without returning dripping in sweat. But until those days return, we’re firmly focused on indoor pursuits – and Dubai stepped up to the plate with a string of new experiences to ensure your summer is filled with fun stuff, without having to take a single step outdoors. We’re talking in-real-life Mario Kart racing around one of the city’s neon-hued karting tracks, working on your swing on the virtual greens at just-opened Five Iron, and doing battle on JBR at the city’s newest laser tag experience. So round up your mates and head to p19 for some friendly competition. And while we’re over here looking at the positives of summer in the city, if you can look past the plus 40 degree heat, there’s plenty of perks to enjoy. You see, less visitors means instant access to the city’s top attractions. Your sign to be a tourist in your own town is on p27.

WHATSON.AE | AUGUST 2024 11

Pick n Icks This month the What’s On team share what’s hot, and what’s a major bummer about the UAE summer Alice Holtham-Pargin,

Group Editor PICK: Summer rates Forty-five degrees might be an unacceptable temperature for laying out in the sun for some. But I’m nine years in – I’ve got this. And if you’re also happy to embrace the heat, you’re rewarded with some brilliant discounts on pool days across the emirates. On my summer bucket list? SAL, High Society at The Lana, and Zeta Seventy Seven. ICK: An empty inbox My team are inevitably going to call me out for manifesting more emails, but as someone who likes to spin a hundred plates at once, being able to clear my inbox at least twice per day isn’t something I enjoy. Bring back the winter season madness (sorry team What’s On).

Aarti Saundalkar,

Online Reporter

Tamara Wright,

Online Reporter

PICK: Cold drinks

PICK: Slower living

I don’t mean a cold soft drink. I also mean a chilled coffee, a cold Pokka Vitaene C, a delicious cocktail, even a bottle of water straight from the fridge. Over the summer, that first sip of a cold drink just hits the spot.

It is hot. But I enjoy the slower life that summer in Dubai brings. Social calendars are emptier, roads and malls are quieter, and there’s more time to spend with family. That means beach mornings, sunset walks to see the peacocks, or road trips to Fujairah.

ICK: Sweat I was born and raised in Dubai, but I haven’t gotten used to the humidity. I break out into a sweat the second I step outside, even if it’s just for five minutes and it takes my body forever to come back to normal. Time to switch to the big handbag because I need to pack in the umbrella, tissues, deodorant and fan.

12 AUGUST 2024 | WHATSON.AE

ICK: Being indoors I need a daily dose of fresh air, nature, and the ocean. I’m that friend who wants to sit outside – rain or shine. Dubai doesn’t make that easy, with most things moving indoors and air conditioning becoming a basic (but begrudging) need for survival.

Miles Buckeridge, Deputy Editor

Dinesh Ramanathan, Deputy Editor

PICK: No mosquitoes

PICK: Family time

If you’re one of those people reading this and thinking “there aren’t any mosquitos in the UAE” how does it feel to be the universe’s favourite? Because there are. Mercifully, the hordes seem to retreat into a summer aestivation.

If you’re cooped up indoors during summer, that means a chance to spend more time with family, instead of running off in different directions. Just make sure you’re not texting each other while sat in different rooms of the same house.

ICK: Sea change

ICK: Dehydration

Like many who moved here for the weather, beach life is for me. And while I’m not put off August visits by the heat, anybody that has experienced the bizarre sensation of sweating in the bath temp ocean will understand my decision to temporary sea veto.

During the summer months, it’s important to make sure you’re getting all the water you need and more, and also take your electrolytes/salts to stay fresh, healthy and recharged. Carry water wherever you go, too. Simple things, big impact.

Shelby Gee,

Manaal Fatimah,

Junior Reporter PICK: Defrosting when you step out of any building There is nothing more satisfying than the feeling as my bones defrost when I step out of a freezing air-conditioned building in the summer. My entire body physically relaxes and I let out a genuine sigh of relief.

Junior Online Reporter PICK: Late-night ice cream runs You don’t really need an excuse to get yourself a chilled sweet treat, but summer is even more of an appropriate time. Sugar, ice and everything nice for me, please.

ICK: Burning my fingertips on my steering wheel Yes, I should probably get a sun visor, but I haven’t. So instead, when I get in the car, I burn my fingerprints on my steering wheel one drive home at a time.

ICK: Nest head days Curly hair and humidity do not get along; hence you might see me walking around with the monstrosity that is my hair for the entirety of the summer months.

Through MY EYES

T H E UAE ACCOR D ING TO...

Food Sheikh

ach month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their must-try restaurants and standout attractions, to favourite staycations and hidden gems. This month, we chat to Food Sheikh (@foodsheikh), anonymous restaurant critic and creative strategist in F&B planning and development. After living in Dubai for 21 years, he shares some of his top spots that you need on your radar.

Centara Mirage Beach Hotel. If you’ve got kids and need a quick, affordable weekend getaway, this place ticks many boxes. They have a lazy river, which is either super relaxing and chilled out, or as stressful as Hessa Street on a Monday morning, depending on how busy it is. @centaramiragedubai

Itadaku is a great date spot. The food is as good as it gets, it’s accessible, friendly, and inclusive. I love the attention to detail, and the care that has gone into the whole establishment. It’s the little things – origami cranes in the bill folder, menus valuing local farmers, and genuine welcomes for every guest. It’s kind of what every relationship needs – a focus on the little things. @itadaku_dubai 14 AUGUST 2024 | WHATSON.AE

I honestly don’t have a single favourite, but I’m drawn to home-grown venues that have personalities and a story to tell. Places like Lowe, Bait Maryam, 3Fils, Orfali Bros, Kinoya and Osteria Funkcoolio spring to mind. I love introducing these places to friends, watching as relationships form over shared meals and convivial conversation. These owner-operated venues are the heartbeat of our communities, super important in creating vibrant, liveable neighbourhoods. It’s been really exciting to see talented local restaurateurs emerge, especially in the last few years. Their passion and creativity keep our dining scene fresh and exciting. @lowedxb, @3.fils, @bait.maryam, @orfalibros_bistro, @kinoya.ae, @funkcoolio

Well, not really hidden, although big enough to hide in, my go to is Kinokinuya at Dubai Mall. I will make an early morning weekend dash for a few hours of escapism. It’s my antidote to a week of digital overload. It’s immersive and inspiring. My culinary equivalent is 1004 Gourmet, I love exploring the shelves and putting unknown products into my basket. @bookskinokuniyauae, @1004gourmet

Probably the response of many, but it’s got to be Pitfire Pizza. Although not for the pizza. A box of garlic knots, extra garlic sauce, and a guaranteed good night’s sleep. @pitfirepizzabakers

When What’s On began 45 years ago, my mission was clear: to create a platform that would champion the UAE’s restaurants, events, and community happenings. But in line with the exponential growth across the emirates, the brand has become so much more than that. What’s On is now an essential guide to experiencing the UAE. We’re on-hand to help you navigate those early days when you’re a newbie with our how-to guides. We’ve always got a recommendation for the best ladies’ night, Saturday brunch, or date night spot when you’re in need of a little inspiration. And we’ve got you covered as you move through the milestones in the city, with our top recommendations on where to celebrate your birthday, pop the question, or throw a baby shower. What remains as true now as it was when we first launched in 1979, is that What’s On’s superpower is its ability to remain at the forefront of this dynamic, ambitious, and ever-changing country. That was put centre stage with our August 2013 issue, where we introduced readers to ‘The New Dubai’. What was new 11 years ago? Paddleboarding, Claw BBQ, Jumeirah Village Triangle, HD Brows, and padel, according to our cover feature. It’s undeniable that everything in life goes through cycles, but that is especially true of Dubai. In the 46 years I’ve been here, the

hottest spots, coolest neighbourhoods and star attractions have gone from evolving year-on-year, to sometimes month-by-month, and we’ve been here reporting on it every step of the way. In fact, our new monthly feature, What’s On Trend, can be found on p50, spotlighting the names, places and faces to have on your radar right now.

GROWN-UP INDOOR FUN

WHATSON.AE | AUGUST 2024 19

GROWN-UP INDOOR FUN

W

ith outdoor temperatures rattling the spicy end of the thermometer, those remaining in Dubai for the summer have to get tactical about where to have their fun. It’s an ‘inside job’. Kids have long been cashing in on their playtime privilege – with access to a seemingly unending list of soft play adventures and air-conditioned clambering, whereas the traditional provisions for adults have centred around “I dunno” *shrugs* “could do the mall?” It’s a discrepancy that 2024 has been working hard to dismantle. We’ve seen a climatecontrolled cavalcade of new and genuinely exciting ventures opening up that cater specifically for grownups. These are just some of the best ways for grown ups to have some epic indoor fun in Dubai.

Chaos Karts A new entry from the Al Quoz adventuretainment laboratory, Chaos Karts is – as close as makes no difference – Mario Kart in real life. Just with none of the messy IP battles. Chaos Karts allows you to race across virtual-themed trackscapes, collecting gems and hilariously inconveniencing your friends with precision-timed virtual power-up projectiles – then driving past them to secure victory and a temporarily ruined friendship. All the best parts of Mario Kart. And with no physical obstacles on the track and anti-collision technology, drivers won’t need to wear helmets or driving suits. Ticket prices start at Dhs179 for a 20-minute session. Al Quoz, from Dhs179. @chaoskartsuae

Tiger Strikes Located within Megaplex Dubai, adjacent to the Grand Hyatt Dubai, Tiger Strikes is a brand new, adults-only, pay-per-play entertainment destination from Dubai Golf. Inside, a rich tapestry of competitive challenges and twinkling LEDs call for your attention. Earn your stripes and rack up strikes across six lanes of neon-lit bowling; or swing for slips-hit sixes with WIKIT, an impressive augmented reality cricket simulator featuring real-time immersive graphics feedback. The pub sports portfolio doesn’t end there. Darts has been given a futuristic retrofit with multiple, incredibly addictive digital game types for friends to try and hit the bullseye on; and for a little analogue palate cleanse – cue up some big break action on the pool tables. Dubai Healthcare City, games from Dhs30. @tigerstrikes.dxb 20 AUGUST 2024 | WHATSON.AE

Quiz Room

COMING SOON

Q: Which member of the What’s On editorial team has won an episode of The Weakest Link? A: Yes, it was me. Modesty is a precious virtue. And if, like me, you’re a fan of the TV quiz show format, The Quiz Room located (almost too perfectly) in Al Quoz (Al Quiz?), might be the answer you’ve been looking for. Set to open on August 15, teams of one-to-18 players (aged eight and up) will be able go head-to-head, and buzzer-to-buzzer in tests of trivia and musical knowledge. It’s been set up to simulate the quiz show experience, emphasising fun and the spirit of friendly competition. Not the spirit of flipping over the Trivial Pursuit board because “your questions were easier”. You know who you are. Al Quoz, pricing TBC. @quiz_room_ae

Adventure Island

COMING SOON

Adventure has a new name in the UAE, or a new surname at least… Adventure Island at Bahar Plaza on JBR has its phasers set to stun, offering a pair of attractions – Laser Island and Pixel. The former is a rootin’, tootin’, pew pew-shootin’ version of laser tag, set between neon paint and black light – and cast across an intersecting network of nooks and camping-friendly crannies. Inside groups of up to 24 can lock and load for a battle royale – running and gunning in justfor-fun free-for-alls or team-based firefights. Pixel plays out on a series of touch-sensitive LED-lit-blocks on the floor of an enclosed room, players must leap around in co-op and versus challenges, collecting points and avoiding the dreaded ‘floor is lava’ red blocks. JBR, from Dhs59. @adventure.island.ae

Swingers This crazy golf-fuelled, above-par, exclusively adult leisure attraction will open on Bluewaters imminently. Originally from London, it’s golf for people aiming at the 19th hole and ‘clubbing’ for people who want to be in bed by 10pm. The Dubai version drops in with three bars, three nine-hole courses and like its British counterpart, will feature street food, cocktails, live DJs and almost certainly – some dubious score recording. Bluewaters, pricing TBC. @swingers_uae WHATSON.AE | AUGUST 2024 21

GROWN-UP INDOOR FUN

Real Madrid World On the surface, a football team might not seem like the best study for a theme park. But ask any fan – and they’ll tell you that the ups and downs, the heroes and villains, the ceremony, the drama and adrenaline – all make for fever pitch thrill rides. Maybe less so if it were Nottingham Forest, but fortunately for Dubai Parks and Resorts they chose Real Madrid, home of the Galácticos, as the first name on their squad list. Real Madrid World comprises three zones (Champions Avenue, Celebration Plaza, Stars Universe) and a licensed store. It’s packed with rides that promise to bend you like Beckham, a museum, skill tests, roller coasters, restaurants and big-match Bernabeu experiences. Dubai Parks and Resorts, Dhs295. @realmadridworlddubai

Brass Monkey The Brass Monkey brand is now two caverns of visceral entertainment strong with a second location in City Walk’s C2 district, joining the Bluewaters original. The new C2 version brings the same chic bar-meets-amusement-arcade energy with a 12-lane bowling alley; billiards; epic sharing snack platters; craft mixology; axe throwing; frantic buttonsmashing fun via a connoisseur’s collection of retro arcade games (anyone for Street Fighter II fisticuffs? No Honda, no Blanka); there are VR attractions; and foosball tables. Promos include a brunch, taco Tuesday, ladies’ night and a happy hour. The perfect squad night rumble in an electric urban jungle. C2, City Walk. @brassmonkeysocial

Five Iron There’s more indoor golfing action on the way, this time making a dogleg up the JBR and sailing towards the lush virtual fairways of The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina. Five Iron is a global leader in indoor golf and entertainment set to open in August. The huge space features 17 simulators, each fitted with a multi-angle camera system to make side-eyes at your swing. Six bays will be equipped with TruGolf Multisport technology capable of creating dynamic sporting scenarios. F&B highlights include four bars, a kitchen helmed by a star chef, an outdoor bunker-themed bar, and a VIP lounge. There’s more leisure pleasure from the nine-hole mini golf course, indoor putting green, table games and sauna. The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi. @fiveirongolf.uae 22 AUGUST 2024 | WHATSON.AE

Arte Museum For a more cultural outing this summer, Arte Museum comes from the world-renowned digital media design company d’strict. It’s perfect for the set that have had their attention span so ravaged by social media that they can now only enjoy art in perpetually evolving panoramic 4D. Their projected performances cover 13 immersive spaces allowing you to get up close and personal with moving images. In both senses of the word. Even the on-site tea house has its own blizzard of digital flora to pair with your cuppa. Dubai Mall, Level 2, from Dhs129. @artemuseum_dubai

BattleKart The UAE’s latest hub of augmented reality karting has just screeched through the chequered flag at DIP. BattleKart is another adherent to ‘the ministry of blue shell’. Shh, it’s a Mario Kart thing. Here duelling kartists can face off and sling virtual missiles at each other in four different game modes that involve a classic destruction derby race; a version of Nokia’s classic Snake; tagging the floor with digital graffiti; or hoofing 30yard screamers in a quick-fire round of rocket football. Dubai Investment Park, Dhs200. @battlekartdubai

Vertical Design Combining the arcane arts of glassblowing and neon lighting, Vertical Design’s Neon Discovery workshop is an illuminating voyage into new skills and take-away wall art. The 90-minute course takes you through the fundamentals of how neon works, the essentials for neon sign making, and a hands-on practical of creative glass blowing. Once you’ve finished crafting your lit masterpiece you have the option of purchasing it. Is the class worth the Dhs950 price tag though? All signs point to yes. Urban Nest, Al Quoz, Dhs950. verticaldesigndxb.com

COMING SOON

Loco Bear

Boom Battle Bar Technically not a new space, but this ode to bar-based gaming has just undergone a comprehensive makeover. Adding to the existing augmented axe throwing; nine-hole crazy golf course; shuffleboard; interactive, projection-enhanced darts; and beer (/prosecco) pong – there’s now a DJ booth and a private Boom Box karaoke. There’s a thick menu of pub grub tapas, and promotions throughout the week that help keep prices low and vibes high. DoubleTree by Hilton JBR, The Walk, games from Dhs65. @boom.dxb

This 70,000 sq ft leisure colossus is self-described as an “indoor entertainment hub and theme park” in Al Quoz 2, created to enthral all ages. Loco Bear is rammed to the rafters with unique activities, including the unprecedented mess of whatever the Slime Universe is; a soft play zone; VR games; a ball pit with a splash of Squid Game energy; and challenging wall climbs. There are adrenalin-courting attractions too – Takeshi’s Jump and Leap & Faith. And there’s more: an 18,500 sq ft interactive Trampoline Arena; Ninja Warrior and parkour challenges; a Wipeout Area; an indoor roll glider; two futuristic laser tag arenas; a six-lane first-of-it’s-kind in the UAE interactive bowling set up; shuffleboard; arm wrestling; air hockey; and pool. Al Quoz 2, pricing TBC. @goloco.dxb WHATSON.AE | AUGUST 2024 23

GROWN-UP INDOOR FUN

The Smash Room If the very idea of meditation makes you want to flip tables, do we have the stress relief for you. The Smash Room is essentially rage yoga. Select your weapon and then enter a cage to theatrically dismantle assorted mundane objects. The puzzle themes run the gamut from horror to Agatha Christie inspired murder mystery, there’s a Wizarding World hat tip and several of the challenges have live actors. he 33rd Summer Olympic Games is here and Team UAE is officially set for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Last month, the National Olympic Committee (NOC) unveiled the full roster of the UAE’s participation, a team comprising 14 athletes competing across five sports: cycling, equestrian, judo, swimming and athletics. Here’s a closer look at the key individuals representing the UAE on this prestigious international stage…

UAE OLYMPICS BY NUMBERS 11

1984

Year the UAE participated for the first time, at the 23rd Summer edition in LA.

CYCLING Safia Al Sayegh has already etched her name in UAE sports history as the first female Emirati cyclist to qualify for the Olympics. Riding for UAE Team ADQ, Safia’s journey to the Paris Olympic Games is a testament to her dedication and passion for the sport. Balancing her recent graduation in graphic design from the University of Dubai with a rigorous training regimen, Safia is gearing up for the grueling 158km road race in Paris. Her goal extends beyond mere participation; Safia aims to make a lasting impact, showcasing the UAE’s cycling prowess on a global platform. As a multiple UAE national road cycling champion, Safia is familiar with the thrill of crossing the finish line after arduous races. Her qualification for Paris follows an impressive 2023 season where she made her mark on the World Tour with Team UAE ADQ, performed admirably at the World Championships, and demonstrated her skill at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. With a strong sense of responsibility to inspire future generations of Emirati athletes, Safia Al Sayegh embodies the spirit of determination and excellence as she prepares to compete in her maiden Olympics.

LOCAL LEGEND:

BOCA

As it nears 10 years of operations, Boca continues to prove why it’s so much more than just a restaurant “

T

hese salicornia are probably some of the last we’ll get this season, you have to try them,” Omar Shihab, the founder of Boca tells us passionately, presenting two small bowls of what look like skinny asparagus heads in front of us. “They’re a potentially very exciting new super food, and they come from right here in the UAE,” he explains animatedly. These salicornia have come from Umm Al Quwain, and are a type of halophyte, which Boca is currently exploring the use of across its menus. It’s the latest addition to this pioneering restaurant’s industry-leading sustainability initiatives, that look to further the use of local produce not only in their own restaurant in DIFC, but across the city. With intrigue and some apprehension,

38 AUGUST 2024 | WHATSON.AE

I take a bite. They’re a little briney, a little citrusy, and a little salty. I probably wouldn’t eat a bowl of them by themselves, but I can certainly imagine them fitting in well on Boca’s menu. The restaurant is coming up to a decade of operation, which in Dubai years is no mean feat. When Boca started out in 2014, they looked to include a dish or two that featured seafood from the local fish market. But over the last 10 years, the sustainability programme has expanded to a 30-page, five-pillar sustainability manifesto covering everything from local sourcing to their energy consumption, which has resulted in Boca being recognised with a Green Michelin Star in the Dubai Michelin Guide for the last two years. And while its eco-efforts must be applauded, how does the Spanish restaurant’s menu measure up in DIFC’s ever-competitive culinary landscape? We start with the refreshing Manzanilla olives (Dhs35), stuffed with local lemon that adds a zesty touch; and the quintessentially Spanish tortilla de patatas (Dhs40), which transports us to a cosy tapas bar in the back streets of Madrid with every bite. Then there’s the gambas al ajillo (Dhs70) another

staple of Spain, where the powerful garlic and chilli flavours sing through the fresh and flavourful ingredients. The kokotxas de bacalao (Dhs125) is prettily plated, with a cod jowl set in a parsley velouté and peppered with peas but doesn’t have the high-impact flavour of some of the other dishes. We return to more impressive territory with the seared confit artichokes (Dhs105), a veggie dish that’s the surprise hit of the meal, with dried cherry tomatoes, a tangy vinaigrette, and crispy sunchokes. And when the gulf seabream (Dhs120) arrives, a piece of flaky fish, crunchy bok choy and a creamy green curry sauce, both the textures and flavours are note-perfect. It’s hard to find space to squeeze in a dessert, but we’re glad we force ourselves to when the tocino de cielo (Dhs55) appears. This rich caramel dessert is given Boca’s sustainable twist, with a pineapple sorbet WHAT’S ON created from pulp VERDICT and a gel made from While Boca’s pineapple skin, dotted sustainability on a plate with a swirl initiatives of creamy labneh deserve to be and crunchy mini shouted about, meringues. it still remains Boca, Gate Village 6, an all-round DIFC, 12pm to 3am excellent daily. EAT // BRUNCH REVIEW Words: Miles Buckeridge

BRUNCH REVIEW:

LA COMIDA AT LA NIÑA

Can this Spanish brunch weather the storm of DIFC competition?

T

hose who shout the loudest don’t always have the most to say. That might sound like the sort of casual cliche you’d find in a fortune cookie, but as is often the case with biscuit-buried wisdom, it seems to be a pretty reliable rule of thumb. And it’s no less relevant when directly applied to the hallowed high-end foodie district that is DIFC. If you’re looking for a Saturday brunch at that end of town, you’ve got quite the choice. Big names in the Dubai culinary game all call loudly for your brunching business. But it’s one of the, we’d argue, softer voices that caught our attention when they announced their new brunch, La Comida. Iberian-Latino restaurant La Niña, located to the rear of ICD Brookfield Place, is a stately vision clad in azulejo tiles. During daylight hours the interior space is lit up by the venue’s floor-toceiling windows running the full width of the outer walls. The aesthetic keystone comes from the blue and white naval murals that tattoo the restaurant’s backdrop. La Comida, which translates as ‘principal meal’, is a serenade of sharing Spanish tapas and more substantial mains. And you don’t have to journey

too far before you’re given a declaration of intent. A simple dish within the opening salvo of ‘picky bits’ – the pan con tomate (basically bruschettastyle bread and tomato) forcibly demonstrates La Niña’s commitment to best-fit sourcing. The unmistakable tongue-top tango of Spanish tomatoes is a rare and exquisite pleasure in these parts. The house package comes with all the usual beverage inclusions as well as one of La Niña’s signature blended drinks – Agua de Valencia. It’s a sparkling sangria that we enjoy immensely. The cold entrada high point is undoubtedly found in the salpicon de pulpo, an octopus confit served with criolla – a citrus-cured salsa. The Latin accent pulls the octopus in delightfully unconventional directions and contrasts effusively with the accompanying artichoke salad. The warm starters speak a deeper tapas truth. The braised short rib canelón is an artist’s interpretation of a sausage roll; the oil from the garlic tiger prawns will result in an immediate bread shortage on your table; and the wild mushroom and manchego croquetas are fully reminiscent of the Ramblas. As two chilled gazpacho soups slink towards our table, a wider palate cleanse is going on around us. The music shifts

from up-tempo Cubano lounge to higher-tempo Latin drum beats. We’re suddenly at a fiesta brunch, unexpected but not unwelcome. We’ve just got a few more important meetings before we can truly let the rhythm take control. Of the main plates, the lobster and octopus paella is the high-net-worth-individual. Scooped up from a central dish, the rice bears the sweet caramelisation scars of a truly authentic paella. Alongside your Iberian biryani (a term I’m fully expecting hate mail for coining) you get a choice cut of striploin asada style, robed in a vibrant chimichurri; and pisto manchego rehashed and remastered for fine dining elegance. Sweet send-offs abound from the suspiciously mellow 12-month-aged WHAT’S ON manchego cheese flan VERDICT and seasonal shave You leave ice. But we’re already decision out of our chairs, last making in La orders beckon, and Niña’s hands the DJ has the entire when at their venue on their feet. brunch, and La Niña, ICD doing so will Brookfield Place, DIFC, likely be one 12.30pm to 4pm, Sat, of the best Dhs325 soft, Dhs450 decisions you house, Dhs550 bubbles. make in a given Tel: (0)4 395 1300. weekend. @laninadubai WHATSON.AE | AUGUST 2024 39

TATEL

Does Tatel’s renowned Spanish flair translate to the Dubai diner? The answer is yes, but not in a way you would expect…

W

hen a restaurant backed by the likes of the Cristiano Ronaldo and the Rafael Nadal comes to your city, you don’t really know what to expect. You assume it’s going to be grand and expensive, a bit pretentious, maybe with an air of intended exclusivity for the highly enlightened. That was Tatel for me. When you step inside, it presents like a Dubai restaurant. You know the template – lavish aesthetics and Asian-fusions or parallel of every palatable variety are rampant. But something is different. There is a warmth there, a genuinity that makes you feel welcome immediately – a shadow of homely Spanish hospitality, perhaps. AMBIANCE The theme is red, with crimson in the curtains and low orange lighting, elevated by huge abstract chandeliers, marble tabletops and dark, velveteen furniture. The tables are packed with couples and groups, the space is high and buzzing with music and conversation – I can easily see it becoming a date night or special occasion hot spot. The bar has a life of its own. Standing tables, bar chairs and a window-esque design with dollhouse curtains. Here, you come as you are. In my line of sight, I spot the bartender dancing behind the bar to the strains of live saxophone and a luxurious voice as he shakes and stirs. A patron joins him from across the other side. It’s Friday indeed. FOOD For our starters, we order the ensaladilla Tatel con gamba (Dhs85), the ensalada de aguacate (Dhs90), as recommended by

our lovely servers, and the pulpo a la parrilla (Dhs145). The ensalada is my favourite – chilled, creamy avocado nestled in crispy, lamb’s lettuce, flavoured with mascarpone cheese and earthy pine nuts. The ensaladilla tastes and looks a bit like tuna mayonnaise with a trust fund. It’s good, but the shrimp carpaccio feels like a vanity excess – it barely shows up. The pulpo is an interesting, delightfully textured dish – the octopus is perfectly smoky, the potato adds some depth to the bite and parsley mayonnaise and Canarian mojo sauce bring all the zest. Of course, you don’t dine at a Spanish spot without trying the paella (Dhs360). Rice back home is a symbol of celebration and sharing, and the joy of togetherness. Tatel wins with this one – as is usually, an enormous metal dish of unadulterated, crispy-bottomed rice topped with hearty helpings of shrimp, squid and sea bass. The seafood bisque flavours the grains so

perfectly, you can’t not go for seconds. I also try the solomillo madurado a la brasa (Dhs225), a prime grilled tenderloin – the sauce is rich, salty, slow-cooked goodness and the mash cuts the fat well. We end our meal with the nuestra famosa tarta de queso, a cheesecake that has garnered awards, we are told by our server. The inside so creamy, almost oozing out of the perfect pyramid of its malty base and ice cream to go with. A sweet, sweet ending. When we’re done with our meal, I feel a sense of satisfaction. Tatel is expensive, but it’s worth it. The generous portions, the old-money decor and the from-the-heart service gives it a touch of comforting, unassuming class. Tatel, Hotel Boulevard, WHAT’S ON Autograph Collection, VERDICT Downtown, Sun to Tatel is that Wed, 7pm to 1am, rich friend that Thurs to Sat, 7pm to never makes 2am, Tel: (0)4 215 you feel poor. 2121. @tatel.dubai WHATSON.AE | AUGUST 2024 43

ICE ‘N’ SPICE Words: Tamara Wright and Manaal Fatimah

ICE ‘N’ SPICE ICE The quintet of summer steak tartare at Couqley (Dhs79)

Nuestro Gazpacho at La Niña (Dhs65) A specialty of Spain and Portugal, gazpacho is the soup of the summer – a refreshing, cold pour made of raw blended vegetables, with the star ingredient being the humble tomato. It’s eaten widely in the Iberian peninsula during the summer, so it’s a summer dish through and through. At La Niña, this household staple gets a dressing up, elevated with grapes, chilli, croutons and avocado ice cream. Some people might argue soup isn’t a meal, but we think it is, and especially when it’s hearty like this. @laninadubai

Sample not one, not two, but five variations of this glorious chilled French dish, with a timeless history going back to the 1900s. Neighbourhood favourite French brasserie Couqley is bringing the essence of this regional tradition – with a Dubai twist – at the Steak Tartare on Ice Festival, featuring French steak tartare, the beef tartare Méditerranée, the chipotle Latino beef tartare, the wagyu shiitake miso truffle, and the summer fresh garden tartare. A solid savoury contender. @couqleyuae

The Maguro crudo at Kokoro (Dhs75)

Hokkaido cheese ice cream with roasted strawberries at Maison de la Plage (Dhs100) Any good list of cold dishes absolutely must have a sweet entrant, and this hokkaido cheese ice cream at Maison de la Plage is a mighty monster (a very delicious one) to demolish. What could be better than some ice cream by the beach on a humid evening? There’s a salty, malty-ness to the soft serve, almost like salted caramel without the excessive sugar and paired with the almost-strawberry puree, it strikes the perfect balance between the heaviness of the cheese and the floating tartness of the fruit. A summer win. @maisondelaplage_ 44 AUGUST 2024 | WHATSON.AE

Hiyashi chuka at YUi (Dhs67) A step ahead from just starters, this is a full blown entree, guaranteed to fill you up. Hiyashi Chuka is a traditional Japanese ramen noodle mixed with a dressing and served cold with a rainbow of toppings from across the landforms. It’s typically a summer main, given the variety of bright and light ingredients and the chilled nature. YUi’s version comes with 100 per cent Japanese flour thin noodles with homemade ponzu-tare, atsu-yaki egg, carrot, daikon, cucumber, wakame, sweet corn, cherry tomato, kikurage, dried bean noodles, and prawn. @yui_dxb

One for the seafood lovers – the Maguro crudo at the relatively newly opened Kokoro Hand Roll Bar is the summer starter of this season. Featuring bluefin tuna, pickled cucumber and ponzu, not only is the is the fish incredibly fresh, it’s packed with bright, acidic flavours while still staying light and palatable. Essentially, everything at Kokoro is served cold, but the crudo is colder still, because of the liquid content. You’ll be left craving more. @kokoro.dxb

When the weather’s hot outside, do you try and get your insides to an ambient match or attempt to cool things down? Whichever you choose, hot or cold, we’ve got the remedy for the summer chaleur

SPICE “Reaper” chicken tenders at Dave’s Hot Chicken (Dhs21) Embrace the summer heat with cult US fried chicken brand, Dave’s Hot Chicken. With three locations across Dubai, spice lovers can choose from tenders or sliders, both of which come in seven different spice levels ranging from No Spice to Reaper, which requires a signed waiver for those who dare. @daveshotchickengcc

Dry pot Sichuan wings at Jing Ding Xuan Sichuan (Dhs68) This underrated Chinese restaurant, located near Union metro station in Deira, has three different menus ranging from mild to extra spicy. On the extra spicy “red” menu you’ll find the lethally hot yet moreish dry pot Sichuan wings.

Cucumber salad at Hawkerboi (Dhs45) Beginning life as an anonymous-chef-led supper club, Hawkerboi opened a permanent restaurant in JLT last year, serving spicy South East Asian cuisine. The punchy cucumber salad smothered in tomato chilli dressing and peanuts is not for the fainthearted. Fiery, fresh, and crunchy with just the right burst of acidity. @hawker.boi

Isan-style papaya salad at Café Isan (Dhs40) Papaya salad (Som Tum) is a Thai national dish and home-grown Thai eatery Café Isan has more than 10 kinds on the menu. To test your spice levels, the “Isan-style papaya salad” comes with (very) spicy sliced papaya, carrot and tomato salad tossed in a fermented fish sauce. @cafeisan_thai

Rajasthani laal maas at Trèsind (Dhs150 business lunch menu) Home-grown, Michelinrecognised restaurant, Trèsind, serves modern, fine dining Indian fare at the One&Only Royal Mirage hotel. A recent discovery on Trèsind’s business lunch menu is the Rajasthani laal maas, a très spicy mutton curry made with garlic and a burst of red chillis. @tresinddubai WHATSON.AE | AUGUST 2024 45

DESIGN Access, through the mall, isn’t the slickest start to our evening, as we navigate the elevators and escalators to reach this new spot. But once inside, it’s like we’re teleported to a different time. The large, double height ceiling offers high-impact grandeur, as does a rainbow-hued stained glass that backs the bar. The space is rich tones of emerald and rust, with textures of leather and velvet across the booths, bar stools and curtains. Super-sized. Vases of flowers are ornate additions to the décor, and the space feels fancy but still accessible and inviting. It’s a fine line, but they get it just right. MENU In the opening weeks, we’re told the menu is a more concise version of its final version, but we’re still impressed with the variety. We opt for the warm goat cheese salad (Dhs65) to start, as well as the beef

carpaccio (Dhs105). Both are generous portions, the former arriving as a bed of lettuce leaves tossed with a rosemary dressing and grilled peach, three hot, moreish discs of breaded goats cheese set atop it. The beef carpaccio is flavourful and well executed, and tender slivers of beef are served to us with rocket, pecorino cheese and a drizzle of balsamic wrapped inside. For mains, we try two of the three cuts: the tenderloin (Dhs250) and the ribeye (Dhs325), as well as sides of smashed Brussels sprouts (Dhs30) and fries (Dhs30) with a red wine sauce (Dhs20) on the side. The meat comes exactly as we order, and the piece of black Angus tenderloin cuts effortlessly, each mouthful tender and buttery. The red wine sauce lacks a little punch in the flavour department, but we still enjoy it drizzled over the meat. While we eye up desserts like a golden WHAT’S ON chocolate mousse and VERDICT sticky toffee pudding There’s little (Dhs55 each) we not to like conclude we’re too full about Three on this visit. H OT O R N OT Words: Shelby Gee

There’s a lot going on in this fast-paced city of ours, with new openings, fresh special offers, and a relentless hype machine behind it all. Because of that, it can be difficult to take it all in and sort the destinations of note from the noise. To help, we’ve broken down what’s hot or not with a month-by-month guide to what’s trending and worthy of your attention. From dishes you should be eating to places you should be visiting…

AUGUST 2024

What’s Trending:

THE PACKED LUNCH This summer we’re saying out with ordering unhealthy lunches to the office and in with home-cooked leftovers that are absolutely delicious. Enter, Hello Chef, the one-stop shop for all of your cooking needs, the recipes are easy to follow, come with all of the ingredients and it means there will be yummy leftovers for lunch to bring to the office the next day. @hellochef THE SUNDAY LUNCH If there is one thing you don’t need to convince us of here at What’s On HQ, it’s a rosé lunch. And few places are better for it than CE LA VI. Enjoy a Sunday lunch with gorgeous food, beautiful views, and unlimited glasses of crisp rosé for Dhs350 every Sunday. @celavidubai

THE BITE Based on childhood memories of cooking with his nonna in the kitchen, where she would sneak Chef Rinaldo a small meatball to taste, the iconic polpetta at Monno is the one bite you have to try this month. Vouched for by Italian expats (so you know it’s good) Monno is an authentic European restaurant we’ll be Roman back to again and again. @monnodubai THE NIGHT SWIM Night swims are very much in this summer, they’re at the top of our musttry list for you this August. All of the best and prettiest beach clubs and pools are doing them – but if you’re going to try one, we recommend checking out Maison De La Plage for a moonlit swim. @maisondelaplage_

What’s (NOT) Trending:

INCONSIDERATE PARKING Why do some people struggle so aggressively with staying in the lines of a parking lot? They’re not stopping suggestions or ironic tarmac art – the lines are there to make sure the parking space is maximised. And whilst you’re at it, maybe don’t get out of your car like you’re kicking through the saloon doors of the O.K. Corral. NON-REDEEMABLE BEACH CLUB FEES We won’t name names but, whilst many of the city’s pool and beach clubs have dropped their entrance fees for the summer, or are offering credit against the charge – some are steadfastly refusing to budge. We understand that you’re running a business, and you have overheads – this refusal to match the market just means we’ll take our sunscreen and prosecco thirst elsewhere. KIARA

The elusive bar atop Kaspia is a stunning drinking den for those in-the-know…

T

he hidden bar scene in Dubai has bloomed recently, with discreet drinking dens popping up all over the city. Among the newest is Kiara, an opulent and glamorous spot hidden above Kaspia, in DIFC’s perennially popular Gate Village. Walking through to the back of Kaspia makes you feel as though you’re a part of the inner circle – an exclusive patron. The elevator doors close on the restaurant and when they reopen on the first floor, we feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of the DIFC dwellers.

Walking around the corner, and into Kiara makes a high-impact first impression. Gorgeous chandeliers hang low and twinkle in the dim but welcoming area, and candelabras are lit with wax slowly dripping down as the night has gone on. Low-lying velour stools and glass-top tables add to the allure and elusive feel of the intimate venue. From the drinks menu, we order a couple of classics: espresso martini (Dhs65) and a spicy margarita (Dhs65), plus one of Kiara’s signatures – the rhubarb rouge (Dhs70). The latter is light and fruity, with a delightful zing. It goes down with ease. The menu is concise, it’s not meant for extensive dining. You come to Kiara because it’s a classy late-night homecoming. You can order cold and hot bites, or dessert if you’re really rounding out your night.

Our order? Mini beef tartare tacos (Dhs45), which were delightful lettuce cups filled with a flavourful wagyu tartare. The lettuce added a refreshing element to an otherwise rich dish. We also greatly enjoyed the tuna ceviche (Dhs65), which was punchy with its honey yuzu dressing and welcomed a wonderful crunch from the Cancha corn. On the warm bites front, we all sighed a happy sigh of relief when biting into Kiara’s version of the croque monsieur (Dhs55) which comes as bite-sized layers of toastie, coated in comte cheese, turkey ham, creme fraiche and fresh truffle. If you’re up for it, the menu also offers up burgers and fries, a proper late-night, last-orders kind of meal. Kiara is not designed for a dinner experience, but the food that comes out of the kitchen is perfect for late-night grazing WHAT’S ON as you sip your way VERDICT through the cocktail Kiara is that menu. quintessential Kiara, inside Kaspia, DIFC girl who is Gate Village 2, DIFC, always up for a daily 5pm ’til late. late-night party. @kiara.dubai WHATSON.AE | AUGUST 2024 51

EAT // THE GREAT DEBATE Words: Alice Holtham-Pargin and Dean Curtis

THE GREAT DEBATE:

SHOULD PHONES BE BANNED AT GIGS? What’s On is dedicated to getting to the bottom of the debates that matter. This month, we’re talking phones at gigs. Coldplay called for a phone-free sing-along of A Sky Full of Stars at Glastonbury. Hï Ibiza has a no-phones-on-the-dancefloor policy at two of its summer residencies. So is it time to silence screen? Dubai-based DJ Dean Curtis goes B2B with Alice Holtham-Pargin, What’s On’s Group Editor… THE CASE FOR: Dean Curtis, DJ Think about a singular moment of the best gig you’ve been to. It’s probably the music building, the lights, the pyro, the CO2 cannons, singing along, smiling, feeling good and experiencing a shared energy that extends beyond you and your friends group. When we are distracted by our phones or capturing the ‘moment’ for

THE CASE AGAINST: Alice Holtham-Pargin, Group Editor I’ve been to my fair share of gigs over the last decade and a half. And there’s a part of me that’s pretty smug that my early clubbing days weren’t documented with 11 Instagram stories, three snaps and a Tiktok. But as I’ve gotten older, and those gigs, DJ sets, and club nights have gotten more distant and less frequent, they’ve all blurred into one compilation of dancefloor-dominating fun. And sometimes I wish I could revisit a specific

the ‘gram, we usually miss the small stuff. Gigs need to have crowd participation in order for them to be epic. So, if the crowd is distracted, it can lose the overall effect. If phones are banned, everyone can just enjoy the moment. Just think about it, imagine you’re filming to show your friends what an epic party you’re at and the majority of other people are filming also. Your video will be rubbish. It will be rubbish because instead of showing an epic party, you will be

moment or time through an out-of-focus video, or dancefloor selfie that really could have benefited from flash (and a filter). You see, I see those photos and videos as time capsules, reminders of moments that meant something: seeing Alesso for the first time with my high school best friend after we’d spent years dancing around our bedrooms to his music; hitting up Defected in Dubai to remind me of the years I spent at their club nights in Manchester as a student; hearing Perfect by Ed Sheeran live a few months before my husband and I made it our first dance song at our wedding. I’m not saying people should be out here recording entire

showing a group of people looking at some flashing lights and loud music through their individual small screen. Are there any exceptions to the rule? Perhaps if Martin Garrix comes up to you and asks for a selfie, then maybe you can get your phone out. But overall put the phone away and enjoy the moment and music. @djdeancurtis

90-minute performances, but capturing a video of a moment you’ll look back on for years to come? I don’t see the harm in that. @alice_louise01

AntiiMuse ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:

From college dropout to a Barsha Banksy

54 AUGUST 2024 | WHATSON.AE

The antithesis of a muse Despite carving out a niche as one of Dubai’s most intriguing Instagram personalities – the mysterious masked photographer, AntiiMuse’s expat journey may be more relatable than you think. The anonymous artist moved to Dubai six years ago for a university course, with hopes of becoming an architect. A ‘plan B’ had to be hastily hashed out after one of his university professors told AntiiMuse that this probably wasn’t for him. During the pandemic, AntiiMuse filled his time with watching point-of-view photography clips, where artists would take photos of people randomly in public along with street photography. “For obvious reasons in Dubai that isn’t possible, so I kind of fell into portrait photography. I like taking a moment in time and freezing it.” He then formally dropped out of university and became a full-time photographer. “I don’t create content for an audience, I know a lot of people would, but I do whatever I like, or think is cool and move from there.”

“I don’t know what it feels like to not know what you want to create” When we talked to him about his inspiration, AntiiMuse – the artist “too lazy to learn Photoshop” – insisted that his creative process is very simple. “There will always be stuff to take pictures of. I don’t draw inspiration from things. I just do what I think would look cool and bring it to life.” While on a shoot at JLT hotspot Soon Dubai, AntiiMuse learned that two of the chefs could breakdance and he knew he had to capture it. “It sounds like I’m being selfish, but I cater to my needs and what I like and I think that’s where the inspiration comes from.”

want his face shown. To help solve the anonymity dilemma, his brother suggested he buy a replica of the mask worn by the now deceased British-American rapper, and “unless the Doom Empire comes at me, I’ll keep rocking the mask.” But why ‘AntiiMuse?’ The genesis of the name comes from a friend’s response to his ex-girlfriend claims of being a source of inspiration. “Muse?” came the query. “She was more like an anti-muse”. But it was a lyric from one of his favourite artists – ‘pain sips for good art’ – that really breathed meaning into the moniker, “and looking back, if that hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have gone in that direction at all.”

“It was chaos but it was so much fun and I’m so proud” When he was starting out, AntiiMuse did a lot of, what he calls, community service. Photoshoots and work that is for his community and friends to create a portfolio. One of his favourite shoots was Staff is 86 where “we took up the whole space of Papa in the V Hotel and just caused chaos, ate food in the kitchen, popped bottles behind the bar. It was so much fun”

“It’s important to separate the artist from the art”

“He saw flashes going off at the event but nobody was holding a camera”

Keeping himself and AntiiMuse separate is very important for the artist. His trademark MF Doom mask became part of his disguise through a simple twist of fate. AntiiMuse was asked to do a live recording of a podcast but was “dodging them” because he didn’t

When he’s out capturing shots, AntiiMuse is “heavy on candid”. He recalls an event, where one of the House of Yanos founders was searching the crowd to find the source of a series of flashes despite seeing nobody with a camera. Eventually, after following the trail of illuminated breadcrumbs, he discovered AntiiMuse using the guerrilla photography technique, of quickly lifting a camera for a shot and then moving on to the next target. “I like things being organic, I like that what you get is what you get.”

“I LIKE THINGS BEING ORGANIC, I LIKE THAT WHAT YOU GET IS WHAT YOU GET”

The Ballard of Buster Scruggs (2018): Netflix

his month Miles and Manaal are helping you make the most of your summer hibernation with a list of their favourite movies from the UAE’s combined library of streaming services. Fire up the microwave popcorn, construct the duvet fort and get comfy...

MILES Fight Club (1999): Netflix

1

We are Jack’s broken heart. The danger, when talking about this movie, is giving too much away – a contravention of Fight Club’s first two rules. Edward Norton plays a guy-next-door type, stuck in a dead-end job that he hates, crushed by the crippling banality of an Ikea flat pack existence, whose life is changed beyond recognition when he meets charismatic soap salesman Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt). Norton’s character finds inspiration in Durden’s contempt for authority and lust for chaos, and sets up a ‘Fight Club’ – a bare-knuckle boxing group, that eventually develops loftier goals. 58 AUGUST 2024 | WHATSON.AE

First time? A compilation of six loosely connected Western vignettes directed by the inimitable Coen brothers. Dark humour and delicious twists star in tall tales of bank heists gone wrong, prospecting woes, travelling shows and singing gunslingers.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006): Disney+ This directorial debut for Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris can be neatly boxed away as a wholesome family road trip movie. But that paints over a lot of what makes the movie so magical. The Hoover family are driving across the country to take the youngest member of the clan, Olive to the “Little Miss Sunshine” beauty pageant. The real sunshine, however, comes from the growth of each of the cast members along the way, the resolving relationships and the Kanye-tier audacity of Grandpa Hoover.

Gladiator (2000): Netflix

4

He’s General Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, a loyal servant to the true emperor of Rome, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. The story of a man, stripped of all he holds dear, rising up as a gladiator through the brutality of the ancient Roman Colosseum, to challenge an evil despot and claim his vengeance, in this life, or the next.

Forrest Gump (1994): Netflix

8

MANAAL

6

13 Going on 30 (2004): Netflix

Interstellar (2014): OSN

5

This epic sci-fi caper set in an apocalyptic near-future is built on the creative nebula of two Nolan brothers, with both Jonathon and Christopher (who also directed) on the writing credits. Earth is dying, and Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is appointed as pilot of Endurance, a manned space mission that becomes humanity’s last desperate hope for survival. Their objective – to traverse a wormhole and find a habitable host planet for earth 2.0. Cosmic peril ensues and the team are forced to make some difficult decisions with Cooper finding out just how deep a black hole goes.

9

I’m such a sucker for a solid rom-com, and 13 Going on 30 is just that, but not at the same time. It’s a typical romantic comedy, with all the ingredients of a young, beautiful, successful heroine, the boy next door and a series of events that will bring them together and you to rosy tears. And what’s more romantic than literally the entire universe conspiring to bring star crossed lovers together? Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo are absolute sweethearts in this fresh but still comforting take on love, and being given a second chance to make things right.

Oppenheimer (2023): OSN If you’re one of the small minority of people who haven’t seen this megablockbuster yet, now is your chance. Oppenheimer was the biggest release of 2023, and earned main man Cillian Murphy a well-deserved Oscar for his performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb. While the world was finally awoken to the genius of this man after six seasons of Tommy Shelby and his dirty, delicious charisma, the movie itself is an epic. From the cast to the visuals and the sound effects to the performances, Nolan has done it again. Order some Chinese food and settle in for the ride.

7

Lootera (2013): Rent on Apple TV

This one is a classic of movies and one that will tug at your heartstrings with the echoes of run Forrest, run! Through the years, the Robert Zemeckis directorial has become an absolute cult favourite and a cornerstone of thoughtful cinema rooted in realism, with a delightful hint of running away with the wind of imagination. The simplicity of Forrest’s internal universe, held together by a fierce passion of love, compels you to fall for him and cheer him on as he proves anyone who ever doubted him wrong. Tom Hanks in his career best – doesn’t get better than that.

Forgotten (2017): Netflix

South Korean movies, particularly of the thriller variety, are severely underrated, as you will learn from this flick. Jin-seok and his family move to a new home after which his brother is abducted and subsequently returned, but he comes back somewhat different. Jin-seok is irked with this change and his quest for answers reveals some shocking truths about his life he knew nothing about. This one is a mind-bender and will leave you utterly shocked at the twists and turns coming your way. Nothing is what it seems and the truth is hidden between too many lies.

One of my favourite Bollywood movies of all time, Lootera is one picture everyone needs to see. Based on O Henry’s beautiful short story The Last Leaf , the plot follows Pakhi, a bright-eyed Bengali girl and the daughter of an aristocrat, and Varun, a mysterious, charming archaeologist. They meet, not by chance, and unexpectedly fall in love, but Varun harbours secrets that threaten to destroy their lives. Never have I seen the aching pain of longing captured with such tenderness in a film, mixed with the hatred of betrayal and the guilt of love despite, amidst the stunning, vintage landscape of a newly-independent, 1950s India. It will break you heart and it’ll be worth it.

That’s what you’ll get (plus your teacher) at the bi-weekly sound healing meditation sessions. Taking place at 8am on Wednesday and Friday, you’ll lie down on a yoga mat against the backdrop of the turquoise glow of the main Ambassador Lagoon, and zone into a relaxing meditative state as fish, rays, and sharks drift by. The 45-minute session uses therapeutic gongs and singing bowls to send sound frequencies and vibrations through your body. TRIED & TESTED

Paws and reflect Tried and tested: Puppy yoga

A

During my experience, the golden ball of fluff on my leg was enjoying a siesta, so I didn’t want to move. Next to me, a shih-tzu was in full play mode, and an energetic pug ran circles around everyone in the room. The puppies are free to roam around, so don’t feel the need to pull one towards you as another one will eventually come trotting to you. There are also toys around the room – some of them bigger than the actual pup, but you may use them to engage in gentle play. To end the session, Dima will ask you to move into the reclined bound angle pose (lying down with the bottom of the feet together), and to close your eyes, honing in on all the happy emotions. Speaking in soft soothing words and adding a mist of essential oils to the air, you retreat to a calm place internally.

Namastay here

sk any yogi, and they will list several yoga benefits such as stress busting to higher energy levels, improving balance and flexibility. Now, when you combine a yoga session with cuddles and play time with some adorable puppies, you get a magical session with a serotonin boost like no other.

After you ease back to reality, the session ends and although I did head home a little sore, I had a smile on my face. To sum up the experience: It was paw-some. Various yoga studios across Dubai, Dhs250 per person, yoppy.ae

Come with me on my journey. I have to confess, I have the flexibility of a wooden toothpick. But I couldn’t refuse the opportunity of doing puppy yoga. On the day, the lovely yogi Dima tells us about the puppies we will meet and the dos and don’ts during the session. After checking for any injuries or pregnant women in the group, we are informed the yoga session consists of 20-minutes of pure yoga, followed by 35-minutes of yoga surrounded by puppies. It ends with a five-minute session of relaxation and meditation. The session begins with deep breathing and grounding, before moving through different poses from downward dog to cat pose, triangle pose and for me personally… the ‘ow!-okaycan’t-do-that-one’ pose. But don’t worry, Dima won’t pick on you. Just do your best to follow along. The main aim of the session is for you to leave with a

SUGGESTIONS AND TIPS: smile on your face, and not with a pulled left glute.

Who let the dogs out? When it’s puppy time, you will sit with your legs outstretched wide in front of you and the pups are bought in and placed on your legs, in-between your legs, or on your mat. Then, you can continue to follow your yogi, or focus all your attention on the four-legged tiny furball in front of you. If you’re worried about hurting the instructor’s feelings - don’t! She’s just glad you’re bringing positive energy to the room.

•Avoid wearing jewellery as the puppies may gnaw and run away with items. •Wear grip socks to prevent from slipping. •Carry a spare change of clothes as the pups could have an accident. •Bring a bottle of water. •You may take photos and videos (no flash), but be mindful of the pups and others. •Refrain from being too loud as the pups may get startled.

What’s new in Mykonos LISBON p68 STAYCATION SPOTLIGHT p74 WHATSON.AE | OCTOBER 2022 65

TRAVEL // MYKONOS Words: Miles Buckeridge

A MYKONIAN

Odyssey 48 hours in a Grecian paradise

L

ook closely and you’ll find pomegranates sprouting all over the island of Mykonos. Frozen in art and hanging from the canopies of shade-giving trees, the seeded fruit is a powerful totem for one of the saddest stories in the assembled works of Greek Mythology. Persephone, daughter of Demeter and Zeus, is abducted by Hades and tricked into eating seeds from the sacred fruit. This act weds Persephone to an existence where half the year is spent above ground with her mother and the other half in the underworld with her wicked uncle Hades. It’s not just a tragic tale, it’s an allegory for the seasons – the prosperity and bounty of the summer, followed by the dwindling light and barren bite of winter.

66 AUGUST 2024 | WHATSON.AE

Mykonos is locked in step with that cycle. In the off-season, the tourism trap seizes shut, the old town rolls down its shutters and the fruiting trees tumble into slumber. But right now, the Agean is in full bloom, the summer sun has thawed the sleeping titan, and the golden charms of Mykonos are once again splashed across the collective Instagram stories of the beach glam jet set. “Does this mean I’m one of them now?” I wonder as I teeter on the rocky edge of legendary twilight spot, 180º Sunset Bar, taking extra care in framing the last shards of Cyclidian sunlight on my phone. I arrived in Mykonos this afternoon on a direct flydubai service – a little over four hours separate this Greek epic from our UAE shores, and it’s a travel tie that strengthens with each passing year. The appeal is easily translated. Mykonos’ famous breeze kneads out the

knots of a Gulf summer; the peace of island life is a sweet salve for the pace of city stresses; and the white-walled, hill-built homesteads have a lighter gravity than the sky-scraping towers of home. And for a land that has spent most of its time in human tenure as synonymous with penury, it does luxury extraordinarily well. The glamorous side of Mykonos is well documented, a case book filled with many names familiar to Middle Eastern travellers. There’s a Zuma, a Nammos, a Beefbar on the Coast and a Nikki Beach on neighbouring Santorini. Part of the reason I’ve made the journey here, is to explore how well the latest addition to this collection of ‘Big in the UAE’ is bedding into Mykonian life. The latest outpost of LPM, now preferring its go by its full name – La Petite Maison, can be found close to the Old Town (though in truth, everything is close, the entire island is packed into an area of 33 square miles). It’s found inside another new face on the scene, the Anandes Hotel which rather conveniently, is where I’m staying for the duration of my trip. Tomatinis on my doorstep, dreams do come true.

LA PETITE MAISON RESTAURANT AND BAR

Sight-seeing Mykonos in its current, fabulous, era – is probably best known for being a party destination. But there’s plenty to see if you’ve got a hankering for something with substance. I took a guided walking tour through the winding streets of the old town – centuries-old churches, bustling squares and emblematic windmills each hold their own spell-binding stories. Head to the port to take a Mykonos Catamaran cruise through the island’s secluded bays and secret caves where you can drop anchor for a secluded sea swim. And if you fancy a spot of island hopping, the honeymoon idyll of Santorini is just a two-hour ferry ride away.

ANANDES HOTEL Coming from Dubai, a land of seven-star hotels and expansive decadence, it’s refreshing to experience a more tangible, quieter sort of luxury. That’s what you get at Anandes, a stunning new boutique hotel – with bleached bones and sophisticated minimalism at its ice-cool core. It has a small gym, and shares a stunning sea view pool with LPM (who also curated the breakfast menu), but it’s the location that really adds a touch of true Mykonoan magic. High up on a hill, it looks over the sprawling white walls below and out towards the foaming broil of the Agean, a prime spot to absorb those billionaire sunsets the island is famous for. The rooms are sleek and dressed in cave-core chic, and it’s just a short toddle until you’re in town. However, if you have anything less than piston engine calves, you might want to consider a taxi ride back up that incline. Rooms from Dhs3,750. @anandeshotelmykonos

The newest member of the LPM diaspora shares some strong family resemblances with its clan members. The artwork, music, menu, the passion worn proudly on its sleeves, is all authentically on brand. But it’s the new directions in which it steps that are some of the more exciting elements of LPM Mykonos. The most immediately evident change is that this restaurant is almost entirely open to the elements. In the middle of the venue, the pool – with its semiimmersed day beds – sets up the possibility of dip with steak frites or escargots près de l’eau. There’s a dedicated menu for day guests that includes LPM’s traditional Riviera flair alongside new Greek-inspired sagas. But you must stay for the evening and watch the heavens cook. All your old friends are there – the Dover sole, côtelettes d’agneau, warm prawns, a conveyor belt of tomatinis and this year’s infinitely crisp bespoke rosé collaboration with Figuière. This feels like LPM, the Director’s Cut. @lpmmykonos

SIGHTS, SMELLS, AND STEPS OF

Lisbon

A beautiful, hilly and historic city, Portugal’s capital is ripe for exploration… just be prepared to walk

68 AUGUST 2024 | WHATSON.AE

I

n the past decade, Lisbon’s iconic cobbled streets have witnessed a remarkable transformation. The Portuguese capital, known for its challenging yet rewarding terrain, has seen its centuries-old castles and traditional tabernas embraced by contemporary museums, vibrant concept stores, and bustling food halls. This blend of the old and new creates a captivating mosaic of experiences, making Lisbon one of today’s most sought-after travel destinations. With 30 million tourists braving its infamous hills each year, the city promises throbbing hamstrings but unforgettable adventures. Here are eight unmissable experiences in Lisbon.

01

CASTELO DE SÃO JORGE Perched high above Lisbon, the imposing Castelo de São Jorge is impossible to miss, offering a commanding view over the city and the River Tagus. Originally constructed by the Romans in 200BC, this historic fortress underwent significant renovation in the 1940s and has since become one of Lisbon’s most popular tourist attractions. Given its popularity, expect crowds; visiting in the morning or late afternoon, and purchasing tickets online to skip the queue, is highly recommended. Despite the bustle, standing atop the castle and soaking in the panoramic views of Lisbon’s terracotta rooftops is an unforgettable experience. For first-time visitors, this iconic monument is a must-see. castelodesaojorge.pt

02

SARDINES With its prime Atlantic location, seafood is a must-try in Portugal, and nothing embodies the local flavour quite like sardines. In the summer, the city turns into a massive barbecue as sardines are grilled on the streets. These small fish have a strong aroma, making them impractical for indoor cooking, but perfect for alfresco feasts during balmy Mediterranean summers. Beyond the grill, you’ll find sardines canned in oils, alongside other seafood like octopus and salmon, available everywhere from grocery stores to top restaurants.

03

TRAM 28 If you need to give your feet a rest for a day, Lisbon’s iconic Tram 28 is a must-do for any visitor, trundling along a 4.3-mile route from Campo de Ourique to Praça Martim Moniz. This classic wood-panelled tram twists through tight turns and climbs steep inclines, passing some of the city’s most charming attractions. Commissioned in the 1930s, the Remodelado trams were specifically designed to conquer Lisbon’s hilly terrain. Beware, though: they can get painfully crowded, especially during peak season. To enjoy unobstructed views of picturesque hilltop neighbourhoods like Graça and Alfama, catch an early ride – trams start as early as 5.40am on weekdays and 6.45am on Sundays. 04

JUST WALK! No visit to Lisbon is complete without a stroll through the historic suburbs of Alfama and Mouraria, which cascade down the hillside below the castle. Wander along winding lanes flanked by beautifully tiled palaces and discover shady squares lined with fragrant orange trees and bars where sardines grill over open coals. Forget about navigating a specific route; aim to get lost and you’re sure to find a picturesque corner with striking city views. Just make sure to pack your trainers.

05

TIME OUT MARKET Dining in Lisbon is one of the city’s greatest pleasures, but a fantastic starting point for any visitor is Time Out Market – the now iconic food hall, which features some of the most popular restaurants and bars in the city. There you’ll find locally sourced seafood, addictive cheese-filled pasteis de nata pastries, burgers, pizzas, sushi, pad Thai, and traditional Portuguese plates, all served up within a bustling 18th century building. timeoutmarket.com/lisboa

06

LX FACTORY For a taste of contemporary Lisbon, head to the trendy district of Alcântara and explore LX Factory. Once an industrial complex of 19th-century factories, this vibrant hub was transformed in 2008 into a bustling enclave of cool boutiques, restaurants, bars, and office spaces. Dive into fair-trade fashion at Etnik Spring, admire the eclectic art – from large-scale watercolours to quirky drawings – at O Gabinete Da Madame Thao, or browse for upcycled home decor at Saudade Design. LX Factory offers a dynamic mix of creativity and modern flair that’s perfect for any urban explorer. lxfactory.com

FADO

07

MAAT Step into the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) for a celebration of all media forms. This August, MAAT hosts an extensive exhibition by Nicolas Floc’h, a renowned French photographer known for his work on the sea. The exhibition, The Colour of Water – The Tagus River, features a large mural composed of 408 photographs that capture the river’s mesmerising colour scale and dramatic seabed images affected by the archipelago’s sulphurous waters. What makes this museum truly special is its stunning architecture and prime location. Housed in a curvy, ceramic-tiled building designed by British architect Amanda Levete, MAAT sits along a sloping riverside terrace that’s perfect for people-watching. Once you’ve had your art fill, hire a scooter and zip along the river and under the bridge for a breezy journey back towards the city centre. maat.pt

You can’t visit Lisbon without getting serenaded at a fado bar. Translating to ‘destiny’ or ‘fate,’ fado music is believed to have originated in the port districts of Alfama, Mouraria, and Bairro Alto in the early 19th century. Today, you can climb the winding Lisbon hilltops to find numerous fado bars where you can knock back shots of Ginjinha, a sour cherry liqueur, and listen to the melancholic melodies and rich storytelling lyrics of fado. For a truly intimate setting, visit Tasca do Chico in Bairro Alto, where fado nights occur a few times a week, and patrons are even invited to sing along. @tascadochico_

list of signature Negronis. The boho-inspired pool bar, Samphire, is a great spot to enjoy the sunset, with a cool refreshing beverage in hand. A pair of signature restaurants will also open soon: Reunion, an elegant French brasserie; and Waka, bringing vibrant Polynesian flavours to the beachfront.

A seaside stay that injects French flair into family fun LOCATION

In the quiet Al Hamra Village, Sofitel Al Hamra Beach Resort is reachable from the centre of Dubai in under 90 minutes. It’s set on the Ras Al Khaimah beachfront in good company: as you face the sea, the palatial Waldorf Astoria sits pretty on the left, while the exclusive, all-villa retreat of The Ritz-Carlton lies to the right.

LOOK AND FEEL From the outside, the hotel looks like a quaint village within a village. Guest rooms are set within sand-hued villas that dot the neatly landscaped gardens and lead down to the silvery-white beach, and guests get around in buggies that shuttle them from the lobby, to the beach, to the villas. The interiors have been given a modern, Sofitel touch, with lots of natural light, verdant plants, and textural carpets, marbles, and soft furnishings.

ROOMS Rooms and suites mirror the same Arabian-meets-Parisian aesthetic that’s found in much of the hotel’s communal spaces. The guest rooms and suites set in the villas are the grander options, and all come with views of the internal gardens or 74 AUGUST 2024 | WHATSON.AE

FACILITIES face the beach. Ideal for families and big group stays are the two-bedroom suites, which combine the ground floor of the villas and mean you have a pair of king rooms, and in some cases, your own private pool to bliss out and enjoy. The guest rooms are warm and comfortable, with Diptyque amenities and colourful artworks.

FOOD AND DRINK The culinary action largely revolves around East, an all-day dining restaurant in hues of smart emerald, that fuses Sofitel’s French roots with a menu of largely Levantine dishes. Grilled Atlantic prawns in a simple garlic are a flavourful seafood option, while meat eaters can look forward to options like the tender lamb chops. For breakfast, head here for all your continental classics, where plates of pastries sit alongside extensive cold cuts and fresh fruits, but you can also request made-to-order eggs like omelets and Benedicts. Guests shouldn’t miss a drink at Veritas, a speakeasy-style drinking den hidden behind a bookshelf, decked out in jewel tones and presents an impressive

The lagoon-like swimming pool – Ras Al Khaimah’s largest – is the perfect place to take a dip. Complete with a swim-up bar, in-water loungers, and a waterfall, it’s an inviting space to cool off between stints under the blue and white striped parasols. There’s also a kids pool with splash pad, and a serene spa pool where you’ll also find a bubbling jacuzzi. Speaking of the spa, it’s a tranquil space where Clarins treatments including relaxing or energising massages are performed in breezy treatment rooms. The nearby Al Hamra Golf Club, less than five minutes’ walk away, is an invitation to hit the greens and work on your swing.

RATES A one-night stay in a classic room with garden view starts from Dhs539.
