FREVO’S NEW CHURRASCO BRUNCH IS A CARNIVAL FOR THE TASTEBUDS
And because no Latin-grade fiesta would be complete without a packed line-up of engaging live entertainment, the Frevo Churrasco Brunch is primed to go full Mardi Gras on your weekend. Expect live DJ performances, soulful singing and the electric energy of carnival-themed dancers swaying to the percussive beat of rhythmic drummers. This Brazilian brunching revolution kicks off at the beginning of November and will then take place every Saturday, at the suitably exotic shoreline haunt of Fairmont The Palm. What more excuse do you need to say Olá to Dubai’s most exciting new family-friendly party brunch?
W
hen you’re craving those real Latin flavours and kaleidoscopic carnival charms, Fairmont The Palm’s Brazilian restraurant, Frevo should always be on your revelling radar. And from November there’s a fresh dimension to their flamboyant foodie flair, a brand new churrasco-themed brunch, taking place every Saturday between 1pm and 4pm, with prices from just Dhs395, including house drinks and live stations serving signature South American mixology. MEETING YOUR ICONS
Icons of Porsche is back this November with even more high octane fun for the whole family
ROAD SNACKS
The DRVN by Porsche café is also making a return lap for 2023 with high performance coffee and pizza. Mattar Farm will be offering its Texas-style smoked burgers and BBQ. For something fast and fabulous, check out homegrown fried chicken heroes, at Bon Bird. And that’s just the starting grid of a busy culinary fleet.
R
eturning this November 25 and 26, Icons of Porsche is pulling up at Dubai Design District (D3) with a full tank of family entertainment and a supercharged roster of celebrations for the beloved automotive brand’s 75-year anniversary. This year’s event has been curated under the theme ‘Dream in Full Colour’ and offers some truly fast-paced attractions. Visitors will find Esports, dining adventures, art exhibits, musical entertainment and much more. This is our pick of the most exciting elements at Icons of Porsche.
ROAD TO THE FUTURE
The Mission X hypercar represents the next evolution in the story of Porsche. Here, at the event, you’ll be able to get an up-close glimpse of how this fully electric hypercar concept is revving up to change the world.
TURNING THE VOLUME UP
The live music, family-friendly playlist at Icons of Porsche includes performances from DJ Junior J – who’s back at Icons of Porsche
A LOOK IN THE REARVIEW
for the third year, he’ll be joined by DJ Liutik, the three-piece Zero Funks band, Denys Jose and Jaymie DeVille. KIDS ON BOARD
Porsche4Kids is a kids-only club, where the only drive is to keep children and teens entertained. Fresh 2023 inclusions hit the gas on Esports, games and challenges, virtual racing and a LEGO building area, for budding engineers. And Porsche4Kids mascots Tom Targa and Tina Turbo are back on the circuit again this year.
The Porsche Museum serves up an intimate look at some classic Porsche models. Amongst them – vehicles from a convoy of collector’s cars that recently make the journey from Stuttgart to Dubai as part of the 75th Anniversary of Porsche celebrations. You can also switch gear and salute the 60 years of the legendary 911 sports coupe. The exhibition includes an example of every 911 generation from 1963 to today as well as models that raced at LeMans and Daytona, and some very special limited editions. Tickets are complimentary, but you’ll need to register at iconsofporsche.com.

EDITOR’S LETTER
UNTIL RECENTLY, I LIKED TO THINK I WAS DOWN WITH THE KIDS. Although the fact that I’ve written ‘down with the kids,’ probably means I wasn’t. I listen closely to my Gen-Z colleagues when they talk in their array of anagrams. In fact, I’d go as far as to (apprehensively) say I know when to use NGL, GOAT and TFW – all recently added to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary – in context. But more and more I find myself somewhat happily left behind. Artist announcements that draw gasps and squeals of excitement from those born in the 00s have me scrambling to google ‘who is *inserts artist name*?’ When office talk turns to TikTok stars I’m equally as in the dark. And the fashion trends (or fits, as they’re now apparently called) that dominate runways and high street stores have got me feeling kind of… old. I’m much more comfortable in the duo of decades that we dedicate this issue to. The nineties and noughties are familiar territory for me. We sang along to hairbrush hits on our iPod shuffles, texted our mates – in as few characters as possible – on a Motorola flip phone, and our uniform was slogan tees, Ugg boots, and double denim. Luckily, Dubai loves throwing it back to those days just as much as I do. Taking centre stage in the city between now and the end of the year are a string of artists made famous in the years of MySpace and CD Walkmans, bringing with them their bubblegum hits and emo-anthems that got many of us through our confusing teenage years. We’ve also been through the archives to pick out the Dubai spots turning it back to the 90s and 00s with retro nights and drinks prices that would still fit perfectly in place on a bar menu from 20 years ago. Your invitation to travel back in time starts from p21. Enjoy the issue,

WHAT’S ON Working up a sweat at… The Lab Studios The newest sweat-inducing studio on the Dubai workout circuit is The Lab. This upscale fitness studio is home to a trio of tough workouts that take place across a spin studio, hit room, and strength and conditioning lab. It’s the latter where I found myself this month, being led through a 600-calorie-busting class of weight lifting, erg-smashing, burpeeenduring fitness fun. @thelabstudios.uae – Alice Holtham, Group Editor
Getting excited about the return of… Global Village We here at What’s On are huge fans of Global Village. The pro league family destination opened its doors for the latest season at the end of last month, and we were there on opening day to soak it all in. The food, the shopping, the rides, performances, fireworks, pavilions and shows – they say it takes a village to raise a child, but it takes a new Global Village season to raise the bar of alfresco family entertainment. @globalvillageuae – Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter
Enjoying a joyride of Portuguese sauciness at… Tasca by José Avillez I don’t have a single sweet tooth in my mouth, I don’t do cakes or chocolate, what I am however, is a sauce guy. And for me Tasca is the Hogwarts of sauce-ry, in the UAE right now. The crudo cones, the brothy seafood rice dishes, José and his team have created something profoundly magical at Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai. @tascadubai – Miles Buckeridge, Deputy Editor, What’s On Dubai
Celebrating a special occasion at... Zeera by Buddha-Bar Zeera at Yas Bay is an absolute treat for Indian cuisine lovers, delectable grills and all the trimmings you expect at a fine Indian dining destination. Come for a special occasion, to catch up with friends and family after an eternity or just soak in the Yas Bay vibe and enjoy a dinner to remember. @zeera_abudhabi – Dinesh Ramanathan, Deputy Editor, What’s On Abu Dhabi
Hey, I’m eating a sandwich here thanks to… Wise Guys When they first opened shop, the All American, mob-themed sandwiches took DIFC and the rest of Dubai by storm. The Godfather-esque sandwiches very quickly kidnapped my heart, tied it to a chair and stuffed it full of the most incredible fillings and sauces it could imagine or manage. @wiseguysdubai – Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter
Starting the week off right with a Pilates class at… Studio14 Nothing wakes you up in the morning like a full body reformer Pilates session. This week, I went to check out boutique eco-friendly Jumeirah studio, Studio14. It’s ideal for those of all fitness levels looking to switch up their workout routine in a calming environment. @studio14.ae – Tamara Wright, Online Reporter
Venturing into uncharted territory with... Steve Madden I don’t wear heels. Now, to clarify, that is not a statement of the ‘pick me’ variety. More that I’m unable to wear them and walk in a straight line. But now that I’m doing big girl things, strutting is part of the job description and strut I must. I recently added a second set, this time glittery, rose gold pumps by Steve Madden, to my possibly soon-to-be collection. Might need a box of band-aids to go with, but we don’t have to talk about that. @stevemaddenme – Manaal Fatimah, Junior Reporter WHATSON.AE | NOVEMBER 2023 15

E
ach month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their favourite places to family-friendly spots they adore, must-try restaurants and standout attractions. This month, we chat to Kelly Hodgkin (@kellymariehodgkin), renowned business mentor and entrepreneur with a passion for empowering others. Here she shares some of her favourite spots that you need on your radar. Stay at the Ski Chalet in the Kempinski Hotel MOE. It overlooks the ski slopes, has a crackling (faux) fire in the room and gives you a cosy, winter feel any time of the year. The chalet comes with its own butler and ski passes for all the guests. It never disappoints. @kempinskidubai
Nurai Island. It’s so close to Dubai, yet you feel like you could be in the Maldives. The atmosphere is personal and exclusive, and the villas are so perfect that you don’t really need to leave them. We have been six or seven times and the kids’ club and water park are brilliant for all ages. What I love most about it is that there’s something for everyone. @nurai_island
Al Jiyad Stables is a magical place for horse lovers. The animals are mostly ex-endurance and very well cared for. The sunset and sunrise desert rides are my favourite experiences. You can spot oryx and gazelles out on your trek. It’s my happy place. @aljiyadstable
Zuma has been my top spot for the last 15 years. And I rate it 100/100 in terms service, food, and atmosphere on every visit. You can count on it to impress whether you’re taking family, friends, visitors, or clients. The dish that stands out for me is the salmon and tuna tartare with caviar. @zumadubai
The Lounge Spa in Jumeirah Golf Estates. You’re greeted by the most amazing smell as soon as you walk in, so you relax instantly and forget anything that’s been bothering you. My favourite treatments are their supereffective, advanced facials. @the_lounge_spa
The Guild – DIFC. It is a fantastic concept and truly different from anywhere I have ever been in Dubai. If you are a foodie then this one’s for you! It has so many different layers to it, making it a memorable choice for dinner, drinks, date night or a girls’ night out. @theguilddubai WHATSON.AE | NOVEMBER 2023 19

et us take you back to a simpler time, an era when the term ‘going viral’ was usually reserved for what happened to your parents’ computer after a Limewire spree, a time of pedal-pusher pants, clear cola, running emo poetry scripts on your MySpace wall, and running out of credit on a Motorola Razr. Sorry mum. Yes, those halcyon days of the nineties and noughties are the latest decades to go under the cultural retro-revival lens and Dubai really is Gettin Jiggy with the trend. Which is why we’re firing up the iPod shuffle to bring you our playlist of the good, the Britney and the Uggs-ly of throwback thirsting in the UAE throughout the rest of 2023.

SOHO GARDEN FESTIVAL Swedish DJ, Eric Prydz is probably best known for his clubland banger, Call on Me, which hit the airwaves back in 2004. Fast forward two decades and he’s still on the call sheet, with the local after-dark aficionados at Soho Garden booking him in for the headline set at their special Media City Amphitheatre festival. Expect looming larger-than-life, dark-future-inspired visual displays to back the beats. Media City Amphitheatre, Media City, Nov 4, 8pm, from Dhs100. dubai.platinumlist.net

LOADED Locked in, live, loud and fully loaded with 90s indie music revelry, The Irish Village will be jumping to the sounds of the Stereo MCs, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Toploader and Dodgy this November. The one-night, what sounds suspiciously like the nominees in a category at the 1996 Brit Awards, festival will mean we get to listen again to tracks like Scooby Snacks (Fun Lovin’ Criminals), Dancing in the Moonlight (Toploader), Good Enough (Dodgy) and Connected (Stereo MCs) – just without sharing your Discman headphones. Irish Village Dubai, Garhoud, Dubai, Nov 4, 9.30pm onwards (doors open at 7pm), from Dhs175. ticketslover.com
NOV 10 METALLICA TRIBUTE SHOW WITH ORCHESTRA Heavy metal heavyweights Metallica have been thrashing out arena tours since the early 80s, but their immovable rock chart presence became an unstoppable force in the 90s. And although this Dubai gig at The Agenda is not the real McGovney (it’s a tribute act called Garage Dayz), it does feature the symphonic backing of a Palladium Orchestra. Exit light, enter night, take our hand they’re off to never winter land. The Agenda, Media City, Nov 10, 7.15pm, from Dhs295. dubai.platinumlist.net

MIXTAPE Allegedly, one of the star acts of this 00s revival gig has been to the year 3000. Their debrief of the temporal tourism reveals that not much has changed, except for the fact we live underwater, and that one of your great, great, great, granddaughters is relatively attractive. Yes, it’s pop-punk outfit Busted, back with the original line-up and hitting the stage at Bla Bla in November with the (also original line-up) Sugababes, Vengaboys and Snap! We reckon Canadian singer-songwriter Bryan Adams knew exactly what he was doing when he penned the song Summer of ‘69. It’s a legitimate sing-a-long anthem, a wedding DJ mic-drop, and that’s just one jukebox selection in his dizzyingly vast discography. Everything I do, Please Forgive Me, Heaven – there are 15 studio albums worth of material for fans to celebrate/incoherently scream back at Mr Adams. CELE RETRO FEST Co-headliner of this throwback-apalooza, Haddaway, released his seminal hit What is Love? in 1993. He’ll be joined by fellow 90s Eurodance scene pioneers Dr It’s My Life Alban, Ice MC, and Turbo B from Snap (Rhythm is a Dancer). THE MAGIC OF MICHAEL JACKSON STARRING BEN BOWMAN There are few characters that had the impact on the 1990s that Michael Jackson did – the troubled, controversial, but unquestionably gifted King of Pop, was never far from the top of the charts or newspaper headlines. Though his heyday was arguably in the 80s, his 90s catalogue included Black or White, Dangerous, Heal the World, Earth Song, They Don’t Care About Us, and You Are Not Alone. And though the real Micky J is no longer with us, the magic of his music and dance performance will be given life on the Coca-Cola Arena stage by ace impersonator, Ben Bowman. Pairing sporting events with live music concerts seems to be Abu Dhabi’s jam. And this year, they really are playing right into our retro-themed hands, with the two brightest examples celebrating the sounds of yesteryears.
1 Yasalam After Race Concerts
As always, following the day’s on-track theatrics at the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, there will be a big ol’sonic shindig exclusively available to race day ticket holders. Held this year between November 23 and November 26, at the iconic course-adjacent open-air venue, Etihad Park – your line-up includes Tiësto (Thu), Shania Twain (Sat), and Foo Fighters (Sun). Three very different artists but all, big in the 90s. If you haven’t got your tickets already, you’ll need to book a hospitality package starting at Dhs2,150. yasmarinacircuit.com

2 World Tennis League
What better way to wind down after a day’s top-tier tennis action, than with a volley of live musical performances? That’s the plan for the World Tennis League, which stacks some of the tennis tour’s most famous aces in teams and lets them battle it out over a four-day, December 21 to December 24, tournament. Already booked in for apres-smash revelry are rap legend 50 Cent (Dec 21), a dream doubles pairing of R&B royalty Akon and Neyo (Dec 22), and UK reggae veterans UB40 (Dec 23). The concerts are priced from Dhs199. etihadarena.ae
Sure 90s music is great, but you know what else tickled our Furbie? The prices. So we’re turning the clock back on compound inflation, saying ‘smell you later’ to shrinkflation and serving up big, TGI Friday portions, of 90s-friendly deals. Could we be any more thrifty?

This incredibly attractive rooftop lounge in the Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights offers unrivalled views of the city plus live entertainment, cocktails and bites. Their Monday to Thursday (5pm to 8pm), happy hour entitles you to buy-one-get-one-free offers on selected drinks. That’s basically 50 per cent off. Tel: (0)4 553 1214. hyattrestaurants.com
The Dubai Marina hub of wild nights and equally wild pricing structures, The Hideout’s Monday to Wednesday midweek offer really does take us back to the concrete streets of the 90s. It’s time to lace up as the Dubai Fitness Challenge returns WORDS: LAURA COUGHLIN

DUBAI FITNESS CHALLENGE
L
et’s face it: You don’t always treat your body like a temple. That’s OK. Those buffet brunches aren’t going to eat themselves. But it’s always good to have a balance. That’s where the Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC) comes in. Taking place from October 28 to November 26, this annual month-long fitness challenge, launched in 2017 by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, invites everyone in the city to complete 30 minutes of activity every day, for 30 days. With an action-packed calendar of free classes, sporting events, and group workout sessions, the DFC aims to help get you moving every single day. Live events will also take place at speciallydesigned ‘fitness villages’ across the city, including a primary complex at Kite Beach and a new Run and Ride Central by Museum of the Future, offering over 600 free sessions throughout the month. Away from the villages, there are some exciting citywide activities and races to get involved with, too. Here’s a look at our favourites…
Dubai South Run
Date: Sunday, November 5 Entry fee: Dhs50 What to bring: water bottle, towel, sunscreen
The new Dubai South Run kicks off from the Dubai South HQ Building with a flat and fast course that travels through the neighbourhood. Runners can choose between a 3km and single-lap 5km loop or double it for a 10km. Finishers will receive medals, certificates, race timings, photographs and some tasty after-event snacks in the event village. Prizes and medals will also be awarded to overall top three placings for both male and female categories, as well as placements across the age categories. The race starts at 4.30pm. premieronline.com
Dubai Stand Up Paddle
Date: Saturday, November 18 Entry fee: free What to bring: Stand Up Paddleboard (if you do not own one you can request for free board rental)
For the first time, Dubai Fitness Challenge hosts a mass stand up paddle session in the beautiful surroundings of the Hatta Dam. The sessions are designed for complete beginners through to seasoned paddlers with a series of 45-minute classes and exercises. Adults can enter a training session at 2pm, or sign up for the DFC SUP Challenge event at 5pm where paddlers navigate a short course through the Dam. There’s also a special sunset yoga practice at 5.15pm. Participants are eligible to enjoy a free return shuttle bus service from Dubai to Hatta. Under 21s must be accompanied by an adult. premieronline.com

Dubai Ride
Date: Sunday, November 12 Entry fee: free What to bring: bike, helmet, Dubai Ride bib, water bottle
The annual Dubai Ride 2023 has become one of the city’s most beloved challenges. This year, the ride welcomes all ages, with the unveiling of two cycling routes. New to the programme this year is a leisurely 4km family-friendly route through Downtown Dubai, coasting along Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard past Dubai Mall, Dubai Opera, and, of course the Burj Khalifa. Alternatively, riders can take it up a gear by conquering the iconic 12km ride along Sheikh Zayed Road, which temporarily closes to cars. This year, riders can choose between five starting gates: Museum of the Future, Satwa, Coca-Cola Arena, Business Bay or Lower Financial St. dubairide.com
Another exciting new initiative this year is the RTA Mushrif Park Cycling Centre’s Fitness Village, which welcomes cycling enthusiasts to take part in a range of biking activities throughout DFC. Choose between the guided mountain bike trail rides, either along a beginnerfriendly 5km trail or a more challenging 15km route, or sign up for Mushrif Park’s road track rides, which features a 12km cycle around the park. There’s also a daily pump track for younger cyclists aged five to 11 years. dubaifitnesschallenge.com
Dubai Run
Date: Sunday, November 26 Entry fee: free What to bring: Dubai Run bib, Dubai Run t-shirt
After last year’s staggering runner numbers – a whopping 193,000 participants – Dubai Run is aiming to break the 200,000 mark this year. This immensely popular challenge takes runners through the heart of Dubai, with its world-famous landmarks as their backdrop. The route, which only opens once a year as Sheikh Zayed Road closes to traffic, includes the iconic Museum of the Future, Emirates Towers, and Burj Khalifa. It’s an epic opportunity to experience the city like never before. Choose between two routes: 5km or 10km, both starting near Museum of the Future. dubairun.com

RE STAURANT REVIEW:
ROW ON 45, BY JASON ATHERTON A 17-course Row-ed map to the stars...
W
hen you’re looking at the recipe for what makes a successful restaurant, there are a couple of key ingredients that have to be organic. Cheffing talent is essential of course, location too, the provenance of produce, concept, framing and execution, decor, theme and voice, the quality of kitchen and serving staff, liberal sprinklings of luck, pizazz, finesse – but the whole dish can be spoiled, with an under or over seasoning of ambition. With a worldwide spread of lauded and applauded Michelin-recognised restaurants, British chef Jason Atherton knows a thing or two about putting culinary experiences together, so there are high expectations for his new project, Row on 45 at Grosvenor House. It means that this consolidation of concepts there now extends to a restaurant and bar, piano lounge, panoramic terrace space, samuraithemed speakeasy, and the extraordinarily ambitious Row. It’s a calcultaed ambition though, one that’s spread across 17 courses in a modular, multi-setting, sensorial safari. A broadly European menu enhanced by masterful Asian side steps, along the way we’re invited to ruminate on evoked palate snapshots from Chef Jason’s exotic kitchen expeditions, absorb the theatre of precision-detail presentation, and the remarkable operatic choreography of
service par excellence. I’m not going to dissect each course, I have neither the column inches nor the inclination to reveal the spoilers that would entail, but I would like to offer an amuse-bouche of what to expect. The courses at Row on 45 are split into three acts; a trio of phases each staged in their own complementary venuewithin-a-venue, designed to simulate the experience of a dinner party in an old friend’s home. The opening scene plays out in the Champagne lounge, with three fantastical seafood single-bite bombshells. Elements include Hokkaido scallops, oyster and caviar, and brown crab. It’s a predator missile posing as a starting pistol. The next room is trimmed with an open kitchen, and a platoon of kitchen personnel going through military-level drills. This is my knife, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Here you’ll be introduced to gallery-rendered, red hot, haute cuisine sparks in the form of uni, A5 saroma wagyu, and deep-sea carabinero. There’s an hommage to cheese and onion crisps that uses a century-old balsamic vinegar. Every flavour pixel sparkles in the composite Atherton cosmos. It all ends with Act III, The Grand Finale, and we retire to the gloriously aristocratic eccentricity of the ‘Chef ’s Library’. It’s sweet courses, followed by
cheese, followed by more sweets and petit fours, surrounded by faux furs, cognac-laden trolleys, deliberately besmirched portraits and inherited London wealth vibes. The 17 courses may be an overreach for some. And the sheer number of staff required to maintain the level of experience must put astronomical pressure on the accounting, even with the food-only ticket price of Dhs1,145. Yes, but ambition that delivers on its promise is a worthy call, and fortunately for Dubai’s dining public, Chef Jason and his resident Executive Chef Daniel Birk hath answered it. Row on 45 does not indulge in populist gimmickry; there are no edible hamster cages or buckets of selfimmolating soil on show here. And that means that what you’re left with is mindblowing food and service. The chefs walk you through each course, to preclude any possibility of you missing a single angle of joy; the waiter plate exchange ritual is a borderline crockery ballet; and nothing arrives at your table without the explicit intent of looking and tasting like it was the final iteration of a laboured search for perfection. RESTAURANT REVIEW:
THE GUILD
Does The Guild have what it takes to compete with DIFC’s established restaurants?
L
ocated in ICD Brookfield Place, The Guild is the latest restaurant to join DIFC’s robust dining scene and the new brainchild of hospitality big guns EatX – the team behind the ever-popular Common Grounds, Hawkerboi, and Byron Bathers Club. The sophisticated, multi-tasking venue is divided into four distinct spaces: The Nurseries, The Potting Shed, The Rockpool, and The Salon. As the evening progresses, guests can move through the different spaces – each catering to different moods and desires. Guests can sip cocktails in the cosy glasshouse-style hideaway, slurp oysters around a live rockpool, and head down to the New York-meets-Parisian-style
brasserie to sample fare from executive chef Paul Gajewski. Take your seat in The Salon in front of what is possibly one of the most theatrical open kitchens in Dubai with striking chandeliers, a roaring open fire, red bricks, high-ceilings, cluttered sides, and a team of chefs wearing those crisp-white, tall hats. It’s rather magical. The vast menu is filled with the exact sharing-style dishes you want to eat in this buzzy, sociable setting, like the chunky, powerfully piquant Wagyu beef tartare (Dhs110) served with toasted baguette; and the wonderful Japanese yellowtail (Dhs120) presented in a rich buttermilk chive dressing and topped with pickled radish. Order lightly to do justice to the main event – the woodfire steaks and grilled whole fish. From an overwhelming list of prime steaks, ribs, and racks, we order the
ribeye (Dhs380). Their medium rare is our medium. Thick and tender, the slices practically melt on the tongue and are swimming in a pan of rich jus perfect for dipping the crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside duck fat fries (Dhs35). If steak isn’t your thing, the lobster linguini (Dhs240) is pure comfort and the saltiness of the lobster balances perfectly with the sweetness of the pink sauce. It’s like a breath of fresh sea air on the Amalfi coast. Round off the meal with a tiramisu (Dhs110), made with The Guild’s own single origin local coffee and topped with mascarpone cream. You could easily lose a whole evening at The Guild – from post-work cocktails to then, hours later, accidentally finding yourself three-courses deep and unable to move – and we’re not mad about it. WHAT’S ON With a restaurant this VERDICT beautiful, what’s Impeccable the rush? service and The Guild, ICD food, but it’s Brookfield Place, DIFC, the atmosphere dinner, 6pm to 12am, and unique Monday to Wednesday, setup that set and 6pm to 1am, this destination Thursday to Sunday. restaurant Tel: (0)54 279 6826. apart. theguilddubai.com WHATSON.AE | NOVEMBER 2023 41

BOARDWALK
Fresh sea fare and corners of age-old comfort
A
ll of us have that one spot we’ve been going to since the beginning the time. It could be the Chinese hole-in-the-wall down the street, a guilty greasy burger pleasure, or authentic Mexican taqueria. Everyone has their favourites, especially those who say they don’t. That is the feeling Boardwalk evokes. An easy familiarity, like dining with a low-maintenance old friend. Tucked away in a quiet nook of the Dubai Creek Resort, the majority of the guests seem to be regulars – golfers from the nearby Creek course on a 19th hole bunker stop, country club members and Boardwalk super fans. Having opened doors to diners 27 years ago, it has rightly 42 NOVEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
earned the ‘local legend’ stripes it bears, and that sort of title usually translates into repeat business. As we walk inside, the marina-inspired interiors offer a clean and classic feel. Accents of beachy blue, rattan beige and tasteful foliage give us a hint of what’s on the menu. Glass walls stretching around you let the view in, but the outdoor seating is the highlight of the experience. Staying true to the name, two levels of the wooden boardwalk flank sweeping views of the Dubai Creek, and with the right weather, the soft lighting and the intimacy of it all, we’ve got ourselves a date night legend too. Boardwalk’s menu echos the Mediterranean feel of the aesthetic, featuring impressive seafood in its everyday best. Caught and brought in from Norway on the daily, as our wonderful server tells us, it shines in the crispy calamari (Dhs80), which has just the right amount of crisp
and chew, and a tangy aioli to go with. The seabream carpaccio (Dhs82), served in a pool of lemon vinaigrette and topped with slivers of green apple, peach and almonds, has a welcome acidity to cut the rawness. While we tuck in and talk of inner city tales, our mains are served – grilled salmon with a shaved fennel and orange salad (Dhs130) and pizza diavola (Dhs110), a beefy diversion from the seafood. The pizza, with the heat and the brightness of the sauce, is my personal favourite. Tiramisu (Dhs55) and chocolate zuccotto (Dhs65) make for dessert. The tiramisu is classic – airy cream and a controlled sweetness. But the zuccotto, a chilled chocolate mousse filled with dry fruit, unfortunately only reaffirms that I don’t like nuts in chocolate. But one disliked dessert aside, Boardwalk remains a stalwart spot that has earned its accolade as one of Dubai’s old but gold dining destinations. SIGNOR SASSI DUBAI A storied London restaurant gets Dubai’s golden touch
N
ew Dubai restaurants typically tend to embrace a modern aesthetic: minimalistic in design, neutral in colour, spacious in layout. The newest addition to St Regis Gardens, Signor Sassi, is anything but. It won’t surprise anyone familiar with the original in London, a storied Italian born in the 1980s. Its charming staff, kitsch décor and menu of classics have served as much as a time capsule as they have a restaurant. The newly opened Dubai iteration emulates this quintessentially Italian design DNA, but feels elevated in keeping with its chic surroundings. A smart navy blue façade lets you know you’re in the right place, then once inside, it’s an amalgam of beautiful shades of bronze, gold and emerald green that are rich and retro. Dark wood cabinets, marble pillars, verdant plants, twinkling chandeliers and even an olive tree make the restaurant feel grand and delightfully busy, aided by the fact that despite being in opening week, almost every table is taken. Guests spill out from the bar down into the

more formal dining area, which will soon lead to a large alfresco terrace that mirrors the glitzy feel of the restaurant. Service is warm and slick, and managers in smart suits pass by from time to time, genuinely eager to ensure we’re having a good time. The menu is expansive, so we’re happy to be guided to ensure we try a few Signor Sassi signatures. Much of the menu has come straight from the London original, although there are notable Dubai additions, including a ‘crudi’ section with a selection of caviar and oysters. We stick with the classics and kick off with the vitello tonnato (Dhs95), thin slices of tender veal topped with a creamy mayonnaise, capers and sundried tomatoes; and a traditional Tuscan salad of breasaola, rocket and parmesan that’s drizzled with balsamic (Dhs95). Both are full of flavour and generous portions that can comfortably be shared between three or four. The aubergine parmigiana (Dhs90) is a bit forgettable, lacking the star power in terms of presentation and taste that are found in so many other dishes. We split mains so that a pasta course comes next, ordering the famous spaghettini with lobster (Dhs260) without hesitation. The pasta-sauce ratio is just to our liking, with
delicate spaghetti ribbons nicely al dente, and each chunk of lobster fresh and meaty. The veal Milanese (Dhs320) is another generous portion that’s good to share, piled high with matchstick-like potato sticks. The veal is lightly breadcrumbed and the meat cutlet delicate, but without sides it’s a little dry – so be sure to order the brocoletti (Dhs50). The standout dish – although the lobster pasta is a close second – is the Wagyu ribeye (Dhs420), an impossibly buttery and perfectly cooked piece of beef with thin broccolini stems and crispy roast potatoes. As we conclude back with the classics, a simple bowl of vanilla gelato (Dhs130) is given an Instagram-worthy upgrade when served up tableside into crunchy brioche buns. Somewhere between sticking to its authentic roots and playing into the palettes of the modern Dubai diner, Signor Sassi Dubai is a restaurant that’s WHAT’S ON sure to make its VERDICT mark. This stalwart Signor Sassi, St London Regis Gardens, restaurant Palm Jumeirah, sticks to its 6pm to 11pm daily. DNA, and truly Tel: (0)4 278 4848. stands out. signorsassidubai.com

MYTHOS CITY WALK
In a nutshell: Award-winning Greek cuisine with a larger patio than the OG
AMAZONICO In a nutshell: A chic rooftop rainforest overlooking DIFC Amazonico’s three-storied Latin American restaurant and bar is designed to make you feel like you’re smack bang in the middle of a rainforest, and that vibrant aesthetic stretches out onto its rooftop. A particularly fun date night spot, the stylish rooftop is covered in Copacabana tiled floors, yellow umbrellas, leafy trellises and palm-leafed plants, so that when nights go off – as they often do with the resident DJs spinning electro-pical beats – you’ll feel like you’re dancing in the jungle. Top tip: Order the Save The Jungle cocktail (Dhs60) with Brazilian rum, lime, tamarillo and anise, and for every sale, one tree is planted in the Amazon rainforest. Come at sunset, snuggle up with your date on one of the outdoor sofas, and enjoy the peace and quiet while surrounded by olive trees, natural vegetation and nothing but the faint sound of a fire crackling away at the slick central kitchen. Alex and Fay Economides’ hit Greek restaurant Mythos in JLT has been a favourite dining destination since the day it opened its doors. But the restaurant’s newest branch in City Walk is not just bringing delicious souvlaki, saganaki and spanakopita to the north, its delightful courtyard is a new worthy alfresco option to add to your date night repertoire. Inside, the aesthetic is deep rooted in natural materials, earthy colours and raw, unfinished textures, while the huge courtyard is engulfed in plants that border the restaurant’s perimeter. A fantastic place to order up a spread of Med favourites and a Greek inspired G&T. The Ancient (Dhs65) with cinnamon, cloves, anise and cardamom is a revelation. In a nutshell: A new garden in the city from the team who brought us Tagomago A garden oasis in a mall? Only the Rikas Group could pull off something like that in Dubai. Eugène Eugène is the first of many new openings in the city this season from the minds behind some of the best restaurants in town, including Tagomago, Twiggy, and Mimi Kakushi among others. Drawing inspiration from lush country greenhouses, Eugène Eugène is a true garden in the heart of the city stuffed to the glass-ceiling with palm and olive trees, laurels, sage, and rosemary both inside the restaurant and out on the terrace. MACBETH RETOLD
Alas, this is where dreams turn into nightmares
P
enned by William Shakespeare – one of the greatest English writers the world has ever known, Macbeth, or the ‘Scottish Play’ (as it’s usually referred to in the thespian community) is arguably one of the playwright’s greatest tragedies. And all the violence, tyranny, deceit, and the pricking of thumbs are going to Dubai Opera-way-come, for a threenight run this November. To freshen things up for the modern audience, the on-stage spectacle will feature a contemporary reframing of the literary classic. This particular production is directed by Richard Twyman, and comes to Dubai with the support of the English Touring Theatre, Shakespeare North Playhouse, Northern Stage and Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg. Ticket holders should expect to see a live autopsy of the insidious nature of ambition, of the darkness that lies within us all, of conspiracy and the “daggers in men’s smiles”.
The plot Macbeth follows the rise and foulplay of a power-hungry husband and 58 NOVEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
wife combo – the Macbeths, who are willing to do anything it takes, including regicide, to secure professional promotion to kingship, justified on the seductive logic that Fair is Foul, and Foul is Fair. Which, thinking about it, is a great line to use the next time you lean in for the last slice of a shared pizza. But, it turns out murder isn’t as simple as getting the job done, and soon things quickly descend into chaos born from the blood of guilt and cryptic prophecy. Botched cover-ups and more ruthless crimes follow, bouts of delusion and deceit ensue and the murderous duo end up lamenting that “what’s done, cannot be undone”. If this wasn’t enough to drive the Macbeths to the edge, the green shoots of revolution begin to sprout when the ruled public finally decide that they no longer want to accept the brutality of the
Macbeth dynasty and at last, decide to fight back against the endless cycle of darkness, violence and corruption. Despite being more than 400-years-old, the story of Macbeth still resonates today, because it deals in perennial human frailties, on primal desires and toxic relationships. Like other performances you might have seen at the Dubai Opera, Macbeth will use a slew of modern technology to create its eerie scenes. From projections, video feeds, strobe lights, and more, paired with the elegant set designs, the spectacle about to unfold is sure to thrill.
Performances There are four shows at Dubai Opera this month, from 8pm on November 3 and 4, and matinee shows at 3pm on November 4 and 5. The performance is two and a half hours long and includes an intermission. Ticket prices per person start from Dhs200 for silver and go up to Dhs550 for VIP. WELLBEING // TODDLE TOES Words: Mali Buckeridge
Footloose and nappy free TRIED & TESTED
Mali from the What’s On Jrs toe-tests a Toddle Toes dance class...
I
may be just three years old, but those three years Mali have been, what’s the word you adults keep using? ‘Unprecedented’. I was born at the height of a pandemic, just after all the grown-ups started wearing dress-up masks. Then it was all about the murder hornet plague, Expo 2020, and the first football World Cup in the Middle East. Perhaps it’s because of my rebellious nature and the fact it was banned in public during my early days, but through all of it, the highs and lows, I’ve always found my happy place in closing my eyes, putting my hands in the air, and dancing. It was a no-brainer then, when my dad asked me if I wanted to join in with a Toddle Toes dance class. Maybe I’d learn some fresh moves, or perhaps I’d find willing crowdfunding investors for the Mali Buckeridge Arts Academy – at the very least, I knew it would involve grooving in a new place, with some new friends, to some aux cable-enabled, threecord, cold hard bangers.
68 NOVEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
The team at Toddle Toes run the course on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the third of the three weekly sessions held at Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club. That’s where we’re headed today, running about 10 minutes late. Dad is trying to blame it on “last minute deadline drama” and his “80 HD” but it’s clearly just poor time management. We arrive at the venue and apologise for turning up tardy. I look at dad, he looks back apologetically. “You better have brought your A-game” I think. But, the dance instructor Paysley is sweet and welcoming, kindly tells us not to worry, and calls us straight into the action. It’s a frantic little number, like the Hokey Cokey but with more animal-based freestyling. I’m a falcon, an elephant, a scampering monkey, and a leaping lion. Then we sit down in a crocodile drumcircle, snapping at imaginary wandering wildlife. Dance is nature, I am the hunter, I am the prey, all life is a rhythmic ballet.
Up on our feet again, we’re monsters now, growling, gnashing and superficially fierce, making our way to a grand monster ball. I’m really enjoying the wiggling and stomping, jumping and clapping, and all the other dancers, including the parents (who are trying their best to get involved, but seem to sit out on the routines where choreography calls for knee work) are smiling great big toothy smiles. There are dances with props – ribbons for twirling, tambourines for swirling, and mad shapes for hurling; dances where you jam with your partner; and opportunities to strut to the beat of your own drum. Which is what I loved most. Toddle Toes encourages you to be an individual, as well as part of a gang. At the end, I got a sticker. Dad got a cuddle. And we both danced in the car, the whole way home. Locations: Kids HQ in Barsha (Mon from 9.30am), Melodica The Palm (Tue from 10.15am), Polo Club Studio City (Thu from 3.30pm). Three week trial period for Dhs240 for the three classes. toddletoes.ae

ith visa on arrival offered to UAE residents, Georgia will always be a top destination for desert dwellers looking for a quick, contrasting getaway. Radisson RED Tbilisi
Where to stay Radisson Red Tbilisi
In keeping with the cool and playful tone of the Radisson RED brand, Radisson RED Tbilisi brings together a blend of the past and future. In the room, you will find standout elements from days gone by, from a red rotary phone to a large decorative panel above the bed showcasing correspondence letters of a Georgian public figure – a sweet ode to the post office. Outside the hotel, the avenue, which bears a 19thcentury classical architecture style, is dotted with cafes, restaurants, a 24-hour grocery store and there’s a souvenir store right opposite the hotel for that lastminute shopping before you depart. The best news? The hotel is also pet-friendly so you can bring your cat or dog with you on your Tbilisi adventure. Room rates start from Dhs428 per night in November. radissonhotels.com
Nestled in the heart of the city, at first glance, the newly opened Radisson RED Tbilisi doesn’t seem to slot neatly into its surrounds. Standing out baring an almost-museum-worthy architecture, the hotel set up home in a 100-yearold former post office building which is considered a cultural heritage monument on the iconic Davit Aghmashenebeli Avenue. The post office, also previously a residential house, dates back to the 1920s. It was one of the many houses and buildings with historical importance that underwent renovations as part of the government-led, citywide New Tiflis project, tasked with transforming the city. Now, it is home to 111 chic rooms and suites combining historic elements and bold designs.
Take a walking tour of Tbilisi, Georgia If you’re visiting Tbilisi for a short trip, here are five spots you must not miss Bridge of Peace An attraction that’s hard to ignore in the heart of the city is the Bridge of Peace. The pedestrian bridge stands out thanks to its blue hue and has a unique contemporary bow-shaped design. But don’t just admire it from afar. Step on the bridge for some of the prettiest views of Tbilisi and get from the historic old town of Tbilisi to Rike Park for some more exploring. During the weekends and at night, performers fil the air with music, and every day just before sunset, the bridge twinkles beautifully when the 10,000 LED light bulbs are switched on.
Sulphur Baths
Tbilisi Cable Car This is ‘how we met the Mother’. Head to the Tbilisi Cable Car and once you’re at the top, you’ll also be treated to beautiful views of Tbilisi, including the Mother of Georgia. Here, you can also explore the fortress of Narikala, which served as a military stronghold throughout Tbilisi’s many military conflicts – another visceral emblem of the city’s resilience. Heading back? You can use the marked hiking paths to make your way back down, or hop back on the cable cars.
Sulphur Baths Did you know that Tbilisi derives from the Old Georgian word ’Tbili,’ which means warm, and it extends beyond the hospitality of the cobblestoned old town. The site of the city features a dense network of naturally occurring sulfuric hot springs, which were often used as baths, and it was for this reason that an ancient King of Georgia decided to put a defensive ring around it and establish a formal settlement. Visitors can head to any of the central public baths for a soak, scrub and a massage under the domed roofs. The alleged medicinal properties of the water are said to help with a number of skin problems, arthritic pains, and more. You won’t have to look hard to find them, just keep your eyes peeled for brown brick domes.

The Leaning Clock Tower
The Leaning Clock Tower
Mother of Georgia Whether you get the chance to visit Mother of Georgia up close or not, don’t worry. She’s always watching you from atop of Sololaki hill. Also known as Kartlis Deda, this monument was erected in 1958. Baring the Georgian national dress, she holds in her left hand a bowl of wine to greet those who come as friends, and in her right hand is a sword for those who come as enemies. It is a testament to the spirit of Georgians and their determination to preserve their identity.
GETTING THERE flydubai flies from Dubai to Tbilisi thrice daily from Dhs1,385. flydubai.com
Created by the renowned Georgian puppeteer Rezo Gabriadze, the leaning clock tower stands out as one of the city’s most unusual buildings. It leans to one side and is ‘propped’ up by an iron column. If you time your visit just right, on the hour a screen pops open and an angel strikes the bell.

From its crisp sandy shores and turquoise waters to the lush green rainforests and fuchsia flowers, it’s no wonder visitors lose themselves in the Balinese way of life. Add to that the rich, fascinating culture, welcoming locals, delicious food, and tropical weather, and you can see why they call Bali the Island of the Gods.
UBUD UNCOVERED To discover a real feel for the soul of Balinese culture, stay in the island’s peaceful and spiritual heart, Ubud. Around an hour from Denpasar International Airport, the breathtaking tropical town is the ideal base to explore the extraordinary natural surroundings and tick off your cultural bucket list. Motorbikes are a popular, affordable, and quicker way to explore the island and there are plenty of places to rent one. The easiest way is on the handy Grab app (@grabid). Start off your morning with a stretch amongst the lush green jungle at Yoga Barn (@theyogabarn, Dhs35) before heading to Alchemy (@alchemybali) for a wholesome vegan breakfast. Take a stroll around the famous UNESCO-status Tegalaleng Rice
Terraces (Dhs11) and for a spiritual experience like no other, visit medicine man Ketut Liyer for a palm reading and water blessing (@liyerspirithouse, Dhs70 for each). Made famous by Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray, Love, Ketut recently passed away, but his son is carrying on the family legacy. After some retail therapy at the colourful Ubud Art Market, head down to the Monkey Forest Sanctuary (@monkeyforestsanctuaryubud, Dhs18) for a selfie with the mischievous monkeys or go exotic coffee tasting at Lumbung Sari (free). To tick off the main attractions, it’s more efficient (and cheaper) to hire a local guide with a car for the whole day. Try @balitourdriver_adi who can take you to all the best spots. One hundred and sixty-five steps down, a visit to Tegenungan waterfall is a must (Dhs5 entry). Standing tall at 25-metres, it’s the highest waterfall in Ubud and one of the most accessible. For those craving some salty sea air, Uluwatu, around a twohour drive from Ubud, is best known for its epic surf breaks. Breathe in the ocean air, sneak in a quick surfing session on Pedang Pedang beach, sip on a coconut at Sundays Beach Club (@sundaysbeachclub), and catch the unbelievable sunsets from Uluwatu Temple followed by a fire dance show.

and black marble are the champions, making the already high ceilings of the bathroom feel even higher.
A case study of style and substance – that’s SO/ Uptown for you
FACILITIES
LOCATION The SO/ Uptown hotel sits in the Uptown Tower in Jumeirah Lakes Towers. It’s an urban getaway through and through, a city hotel soaring upwards to see the rest of JLT’s glittering skyline eye to eye. A winding driveway transports you to the lobby six floors up from the ground, and that’s where your ascent begins.
LOOK AND FEEL SO/ Uptown is a stylish hotel. So much so, in fact that ‘stylish’ really is the most apt way of describing it. Everything in the lobby drips elegant chic, from the climbing walls of the lobby, printed with a leafy, rainforestesque wallpaper, to the velvet sofas and the rest of the contemporary, geometric

furniture. The colour green is a recurring sight, splashed across most of the space in a deep emerald shade. The hallways are gold and white, featuring Greek-style statues with modern makeovers and enormous coffee table books.
ROOMS We were given a Collection Room on the 41st floor. The space itself is beautiful, with more velvet and accents of dark, glamorous wallpaper. The wooden wardrobes give the whole look a touch of elegance, while the dropdown lamps and the quirky, cylindrical side tables mix it up. Clearly, SO/ Uptown’s mood is entirely design-led. The aesthetics are paramount – upscale and ‘uptown’- and are flourished by the sweeping views of the city beyond yonder. The bathroom is perhaps just as spacious, elevating the cityscape feel with a view right in the bathtub’s line of sight. White
SO/ Uptown has all the amenities one would expect at a five-star destination. There’s a picturesque pool complex attached to a lounge, a gym that operates 24 hours, a spa and a salon for some self-care, if you fancy. There is also an element of the corporate here, perhaps because of the cityside location and the fact the ballroom holds capacity for events with up to 600 guests.
FOOD AND DRINK Restaurants at SO/ Uptown paint a wellrounded picture without the mind-boggling variety of some locations. French-Italian style Brasserie Uptown offers all-day dining and a breath-of-fresh-air breakfast experience. No buffets here – just a curated set menu you can take your breakfast pick from. The Citronelle Club, the Pan-Asian spot with a touch of French is a nice setting for a dinner date. The highlights of the menu, for us, were the xiao long bao – juicy, warm and comforting – and the duck, cooked to tender perfection and elevated with a myriad of sauces.
RATES A one-night stay for two in the Collection Room with breakfast costs from around Dhs1,113. SO/Uptown Dubai, Uptown Tower, JLT, Tel: (0)4 820 8888. so-hotels.com
