D

ecember is here, and those festive feels are really kicking in. If you want to spend time with your loved ones, Winter City at Expo City Dubai is the place to be. Running from Friday, December 15 to January 7, 2024, the popular Expo site is transforming into a magical winter wonderland complete with eco-friendly events to celebrate the festive season the sustainable way.

Santa’s house Explore Santa’s enchanting sustainable house and discover how to keep his house environment friendly, from using repurposed decorations to energy-saving lighting and more. Naughty or nice? Little ones will be given a choice based on their decisions on whether they will embrace a greener lifestyle. You can also join Santa on a quest to save the North Pole and its precious wildlife from the dramatic impacts of global climate change. You will need to follow clues, conquer climate challenges, collect stamps (everyone’s favourite mission at Expo 2020 Dubai), and join the elves in eco-friendly workshops.

Santa’s Toy Factory Follow the laughter of children and you’ll most likely find yourself at Santa’s Toy Factory. Here, children can immerse themselves in a world of science, technology, engineering and math – all promoting sustainability. They will be able to create their own toys from recycled items – an activity they can adopt when they are home, thereby continuing to do good for the planet.

Mrs Claus’ bakery At Mrs Claus’ bakery, children can learn how to decorate polar bear and ice cap-shaped gingerbread cookies with colourful frosting. Santa’s little elves will share stories on how to save polar habitats and give handy tips on the R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Expo City Farm Expo’s latest attraction is Expo City Farm, where you can meet Frosty the Snowman and the elves and partake in interactive workshops from gardening, cultivating to vegetable arts and crafts.

The chalet-style Christmas market is where the vibe really comes together, complete with snow-sprinkled trees and fun carnival games. Keep an eye open for a reindeer sleigh for a picture-perfect family memory. Back due to popular demand is the supersized post box, where visitors can write letters to Santa on recycled paper using environment-friendly markers, pledging to make the world a better place. To help you stay sustained during your visit, there will be hot chocolate, mince pies, gingerbread and more festive treats.

Tickets to Expo City Dubai’s Winter City are Dhs20 per adults and Kids under the age of 12 enter for free, available at platinumlist.net

THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR AT KEMPINSKI HOTEL MALL OF THE EMIRATES It’s the most wonderful time of the year here at Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates! Our team has put together a myriad of special treats across our hotel. Choose your own ‘Magical Experience’, be it a personal stay in the hotel during the festive season, relatives visiting from overseas or a meal with friends, we have something for everyone.

EDITOR’S LETTER

I’M PROBABLY WHAT YOU’D CALL A ‘STRESS HEAD’ Reluctantly, I’ll admit it. I thrive in high-pressure environments. I get my finest work done when I’m spinning several plates in one go, which is probably why I’ve taken on a renovation project in recent months, alongside planning my destination wedding and the day-to-day craziness that comes with taking care of a brand like What’s On. Then throw in silly season, and you’ve got the perfect cocktail of never-ending things to think about. The present buying, Christmas cooking, being on the finest form for the string of festive get-togethers, it’s easy to get swept up in it all. Even as someone who likes to move at a hundred miles per hour, I find it a bit… all consuming. But my advice to you all this December, is to remember what this time of year is really about. Because it isn’t whether you picked the best present in Secret Santa, nor is it about whether your tree is as decadently decked as the house next door. It’s about spending time with your nearest and dearest, and for appreciating all that we have. For me, that includes the lovely bunch you see on this page, my wonderful What’s On team. Before we all head off on our respective Christmas holidays: some staying in Dubai, others – like myself – trading sand for snow (hopefully) with a family Christmas back home, we got together for a team photoshoot in our fabulously festive Next Christmas pjs. It’s become our team tradition. And yes, it results in a wonderful snap for our December issue, but it’s also the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time together. And that’s what this time of year, is really for. Wishing you a wonderful festive season,

WHAT’S ON Getting my fill of authentic Turkish food at… Sirali

Showing support with... CPTN Shirts

There are a handful of people’s restaurant recommendations I trust above all others, and one of those in the circle, is my friend Nazli. She raves about the authentic Turkish food at Sirali, and so I had to go and check it out. Located in Habtoor City, it’s warm and inviting, just like the ever-hospitable owner, Fadi, who makes every guest feel like they’re special. The portions are generous, and the flavours are fantastic. @siralikebapdubai

This homegrown brand is usually my first stop when the midlife crisis shirt wardrobe needs a re-up, but their latest piece – the Keffiyeh Watermelon, resonates on a level far beyond the usual merry mix of tropical plants and paisley blooms. They’re donating Dhs100 from the sale of each Dhs250 piece to Emirates Red Crescent, to help fund the ongoing relief efforts. There is no freedom until we’re all free. @cptn_dxb

Satisfying my spice craving at… Yoko Sizzlers

Not spilling the tea with… Newby

Things I crave when it starts getting cold: hot pot, hot karak, and a piping hot sizzler from Yoko. As soon as the temp changes, I become obsessed with their Yoko chicken special – two spicy fillets of chicken on a bed of rice and vegetables and fries topped with a fiery sauce. It all arrives at the table on a sizzling plate, ensuring hot food and satisfying ASMR. @yokodubai

If you’re a tea connoisseur that is constantly looking to unravel an incredible new flavour, Newby is your brand. Pick from three categories, including their speciality teas, rare teas and ultra-rare teas, and flavours such as their Royal Kahwa, the Delicate Oolong and the Gulshan. You’ll be tipping the teapot in record time. @newbyteas

Taking up a new hobby thanks to… Tabchilli

Giving my skin a muchneeded boost at… Biolite

I’ve always been a little apprehensive about Kombucha. But with homegrown kings of the fermented chilli paste, Tabchilli recently dropping their own cloudy brew – the time felt right to take the plunge. I will report back on the taste, fizz and overall feel of kombucha in good time. @tabchilli

Biolite is one of my favourite wellness escapes in the city, located in Umm Suqeim in the heart of Jumeirah. This week I tried one of their magic facials: the injectable skin boosters – essentially micro-injections of hyaluronic acid into the face. The results were immediately visible: smoother, hydrated, glowing skin togo. @bioliteuae

Through MY EYES

T H E UAE ACCOR D ING TO...

Keith Dallison aka Santa Claus

E

ach month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their favourite places to family-friendly spots they adore, must-try restaurants and standout attractions. This month, we chat to the real Santa Claus (@santa_claus_kd) who will of course be coming to town this month. Here, he shares some of his favourite spots to visit with Mrs. Claus and his elves in the UAE.

Maisan15 is a cosy, friendly cafe that is unlike anything else in Dubai. Mrs. Claus and I go there for a chilled breakfast. Chef Rita creates everything from organic ingredients and it’s simply scrumptious. Maybe I should not be mentioning it here, because then it’ll not be such a hidden gem anymore... ho ho ho. @maisan15

My favorite staycation is Atlantis, The Palm, simply because I find myself enjoying all the fantastical fun filled activities like Aquaventure, The Lost Chambers, and those friendly sea lions, guess I’m still a big kid at heart. I’ll be there this Christmas for sure. @atlantisthepalm

The most festive places are where you find Christmas cheer – it comes from the heart of everyone and those special moments they create. Being Santa, I make it my mission to share that sentiment, so wherever you find me, you’ll find the Christmas spirit.

My chill zone is to take a paddle board at sunrise from Ignite Water Sports and head out around Palm Jumeirah. Out there on the water, I find it’s the most peaceful and natural way to recharge my zen after all the noise and bustle of the workshop. Elves can be quite noisy you know! @ignitewatersports

For our special nights out, Mrs. Claus and I head to Orfali Bros Bistro. It is an imaginative cuisine that sums up the essence of Dubai. Chef Mohamad and his brothers blend together a tantalising experience inspired by the sophisticated multicultural vibe of the city. It’s sheer magical genius and we like magic. @orfalibros_bistro

December is my busiest and yet favourite month simply because I get to engage with lots of children in Dubai. Christmas activities like gingerbread house making and decorating, talking about the latest toys and sharing festive stories, seeing their happy faces is what makes it all extremely worthwhile. ’was the day after Christmas, and all through the villa, the creatures were peckish for ice cream vanilla. Maybe some turkey sandos, yes that would be nice, a side of some French fries and Champagne on ice. After all December 26 is the Feast of St. Stephen, and if it’s good enough for him, it’s good enough for we, then. Join us, as we look for what’s good and gourmet, on this 2023, Dubai Boxing Day.

If you’ve ever wondered what the day after Christmas is like in Gordon Ramsay’s house, we reckon Bread Street Kitchen probably gives good account (sans the obligatory swearing obviously). It’s his restaurant after all, and they’re hosting a big ol’ British roast (Dhs195) for the occasion. That’s the food, not what Gordon does to reality TV show chefs. The festive feast comes with, naturally, all the trimmings, family appropriate live entertainment, and a great deal (Dhs70) on pairs of cocktails. We can pretty much guarantee that it’s not going to be a white Christmas in Dubai. Quite the opposite in fact, and that’s one of our favourite parts about the festive season here – that it can be spent luxuriating in the pool rather than shoveling grey snow mush off the driveway. At La Baie, their Boxing Day adults-only pool party comes with DJ accompaniment, a barbecue brunch and live entertainment. La Baie, The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai at The Walk, JBR, Dec 26, from midday, from Dhs299. Tel: (0)4 399 4000. ritzcarlton.com

The Croft Boxing Day falls on a Tuesday this year, and there are some people that would suggest that having a midweek roast is a little excessive, even at this time of year. To those people we say “keep your humbugs to yourself, we’re off to The Croft”. Here you get all the usual ovenfired meats, trimming treats, a range of free-flow beverage options and you can choose your three hour slot between midday and 11pm. But these heavy-weight experiences can come with heavy-weight bills. There is a money-clip flip side though, it’s incredibly simple to seek out and secure more-than-accessibly priced examples of stunning street food from all over the globe. But where do you go if you want a little of both worlds? Great food and service, fancy tablecloths, vibes, bread baskets, maybe a nice view, just zero need to look at remortgaging options. This is our pick of Dubai’s best places to dine out, where you can easily get a meal with drinks, for less than Dhs500 per couple.

GREAT DINNERS OUT THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK

THE GREENS/JLT/BARSHA

Not Only Fish One thing I’ve learned from having young kids is that when they offer unprompted, oddly specific denials (“I didn’t put the TV remote in the cat litter”) they’re usually false. But we’ve checked this restaurant out, and can confirm it does serve more than fish. Found in JLT, this pan Asian but predominantly Japanese eatery has a loyal following built on its unfussy menu that serves *checks notes* not only fish. As with many Dubai restaurants, sharing is encouraged by the menu. Find highlights in the duck katsu (Dhs85), crab tacos (Dhs80), tom yum seabass (Dhs150) and beef brisket, which is part of their special set menu (Thur to Sat, from 7pm). The deal here includes three courses and unlimited beer, wine and prosecco for Dhs369 per couple. Almas Tower, Jumeriah Lake Towers, Sun to Wed midday to midnight, Thur to Sat midday to 2am. Tel: (0)4 554 0707. @not_only_fish.dxb

Kinoya Kinoya started as a passion project supper club, sired by the keen culinary mind of Chef Neha Mishra. It says a lot about a business when the leap from invite-only IYKYKs to hostess-fronted, hot-ticket eateries just looks like manifest destiny. Bricks and mortar Kinoya exploded onto the notoriously sticky ramen circuit of Dubai, applauded for its authentic Japanese noodle soup among other delights (go on a Friday and make sure you get the spicy duck special ramen, alongside the beef gyoza), hosted in a space with traditional Shoji paper walls that feels every bit the Tokyo izakaya. The private dining rooms have a no-shoes policy, you’ll probably have to stoop down to get in one and then perform entry-level gymnastics to sink your legs into the lowered floor seating. But nothing short of cherry blossom blizzard could enhance the Rising Sun spirit. Kinoya was recently ranked in seventh place on the MENA 50 Best Restaurants list, was featured in the Bib Gourmand (good food at affordable prices) section of the Michelin Guide and is now in London, inside the food hall at the luxury department store, Harrods. The Onyx Tower, The Greens Tues to Sun 12pm to 1am, Mon closed. Tel: (0)4 220 2920. kinoya.ae

Couqley French Bistro and Bar This grand dame of the Dubai dining scene will never go out of fashion. Forget the Roman Empire, there’s barely a week (day, minute) that goes by where we don’t think about their butterflied tenderloin steak frites robed in the unnecessarily lascivious signature sauce. And it’s clear we’re not alone. The dining area rarely features anything less than a vibrant hum of contented datenighters, swirling Bordeaux and fizzing with polished rizz. Special mention goes out to their always-on moules (mussels) frites (chips) deal – Dhs149, but on Mondays the menu gets beefed up with a steak and chips combo, plus a bottle of wine at Dhs349 for two. It’s also available at the Downtown Pullman Hotel location too. Couqley French Bistro and Bar, JLT Cluster A, daily midday to 1am. Tel: (0)4 514 9339. couqley.ae

CIT Y WALK Mythos Urban Greek Eatery

Cafe Isan If your experience of Thai food has been limited to food colouringlaced curry, tom yum instant ramen, or packets of sweet chilli crisps – you owe it to the land of smiles, to make a reparation trip to Cafe Isan. You can pick up deeply authentic, insanely aromatic versions of the Thai classics such as green curry (Dhs43), pad Thai (Dhs42), papaya salad (Dhs37), and jumbo spring rolls (Dhs34). But there’s more. Trek deeper into the South-East Asian heartlands with Chef New’s off-piste specials, fusion dishes, and less conventional concoctions. Level 1, Armada Avenue Hotel, Cluster P, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Dubai. Sun to Thur 12pm to 12am, Fri and Sat 12pm to 2am. Tel: (0)58 529 1003. @cafeisan

Lola Taberna Española One hack for finding the best examples of a particular cuisine in a cosmopolitan city – do a quick survey of friends from that particular country, about where they go when they want a taste of home. And if you’re talking about Spanish food, you’re going to hear ‘Lola Taberna’ a lot. Here, the mains from Spain are priced on an even plane (we gusta mucho the chicken and green bean paella) – and the authentic tapas items are too (smash the huevos rotos); there are flamenco dancing nights; a breezy terrace; real jamon Iberico; sangria no-scoping; and take this as a reminder, if you both order the gambas al ajilo – you’ll both smell like garlic. Love is mutually assured destruction. Tryp by Wyndham Dubai, Barsha Height, Sun to Thur 5pm to 1am, Fri and Sat 1pm to 2am. Tel: (0)4 247 6688. @lolataberna

The Mythos Odyssey is now two restaurants strong, with this newer outpost of the empire bossing City Walk’s C2. Ordering from their substantial signature dishes might push you beyond budget, but you can share treats like the suckling goat Kleftiko (Dhs295) and make the cut. But you’d be missing out on the little plates and dips – which are an epic in their own. Mythos’ taramasalata for example is Homeric poetry. City Walk. Sun to Thu, 12.30pm to 12am. Fri and Sat, 12.30pm to 1am. Tel: (0)4 225 3313. mythosdubai.com

DUBAI HILLS Duo Gatrobar From Russia (St Petersburg to be exact) with love, DUO has officially landed in the Dubai desert. Known for its reasonable prices, quality ingredients, delicious signature cocktails, and lively atmosphere. The menu blends modern European cuisine with a touch of Asia. Chef Dmitry Blinov is bringing his 40 best dishes from DUO Band’s restaurants to Dubai, including the tuna ceviche (Dhs65), broccoli pate (Dhs35), and oxtail pie with taleggio (Dhs75). Dubai Hills Business Park 4, weekdays 12pm to 11pm, weekends 12pm to 12am. Tel: (0)4 451 5740. @duo.uae

DIFC/DOWNTOWN

Aamara When you say “from the team that brought you Tresind, Carnival and Avatara” there are certain assumptions that get attached to that statement. One is that the cuisine will likely be served with an astounding visual component; it will feature flavourful modern interpretations of classic Indian dishes; be set in gorgeously appointed interiors; and that there may be a bit of a spicy price tag for the experience. All of the above is true for Aamara, except for the pricing, and that the kitchen wizardry also incorporates some more Middle Eastern flexes. You can pick up the helmsman’s palate playlist (chef ’s table) from just Dhs245 per head, which leaves a little wiggle room for drinks – but we’re more than happy hitting the a la carte for coconut prawn curry. Bonus tip for daytime diners: the five-course business lunch is just Dhs116. Aamara, Voco Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road, daily 12pm to 11.30pm. Tel: (0)52 573 5723. aamara.ae

Fi’lia If hearty Italian classics a la Nonna is what you’re looking for in a date night, then make yourself a reservation at Fi’lia. Pronto. The restaurant is perched on the 70th floor of SLS Dubai, and the folia-filled terrace boasts some incredible views of the Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai. The menu celebrates multi-generational Italian cooking, with dishes inspired by family recipes passed on from generation to generation. Think rustic homemade foccacia, twirl-able ribbons of pasta and fresh fish served sharing style. Fi’lia, SLS Dubai, Downtown Dubai, 12pm to 12am daily. Tel: (0)4 607 0770. sbe.com

BB Social Dining Three hot facts that make this ha-BB worth considering: the homegrown DIFC hot spot has been frequented by Dubai royalty on more than one occasion; some of its dishes are genuine Dubai scene gastronomic icons; and the menu is (mostly) divided into taxonomical categories under the letter B – think baos, bites, and BBQ. If you’re in the mood for sharing, we’d counsel your consideration of the prawn and lobster hargow (Dhs67); the crispy sprouts (Dhs49); scallop carpaccio (Dhs65); and the crispy duck bao (Dhs69). Gate Village 8, DIFC, Sun to Wed midday to midnight, Thur midday to 1am, Fri and Sat midday to 2am. Tel: (0)4 407 4444. @bbdifc

The Crossing Conceived by the charismatic pairing of Master Chef Jitin Joshi and sommelier-in-chief Magandeep Singh, The Crossing’s tasting menu puts on an incredible demonstration of craft, journeying, creativity, thoughtfulness, and culinary magic. The palate pixels of the four-course, 12-dish carnival of colour include a trio of creative crunchy chaat plates, naga chilli crab, gunpowder prawn, salmon tikka, lamb chop and mutton pulav. The price to take this joy ride around the highlands of South Asian food – just Dhs195 (wine pairing packages from Dhs145). You can find similar joy in the a la carte section too (it’s all about the vindaloo lamb chops). The H Dubai, WTC Area, Mon to Sun midday to 1am, Dhs195 per person. Tel: (0)4 491 9695. @thecrossingdubai

MADINAT JUMEIRAH

PALM JUMEIRAH Cucina

Taverna Also in the Madinat and worthy of date destination attention – is the big fat (only in the right places) Greek restaurant, Taverna. It really does whisper Ionian holiday vibes quite sweetly in your ear, partly because of the intelligently curated design touches but also because they source a lot of their produce from various regions across Greece. For those of Dionysian disposition, Eleusinian mysteries are uncorked in the Hellenic wine on tap, which you can order by the glass, carafe, bottle or magnum. We’d recommend ordering the small plates to ensure you taste a good range of what’s on offer – selections such as tuna carpaccio (Dhs70), lamb souvlaki served with fries (Dhs90), gemista (stuffed peppers, Dhs98), moussaka (Dhs120), baby squid (Dhs58), and the skopelitiki cheese pie (Dhs70). Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai, 12pm to 12am Mon to Thur, 12pm to 1am Fri to Sun. Tel: (0)4 589 5665. @tavernagreek.ae

We truly are spoiled for choice when it comes to Italian restaurants in Dubai, but some are far more worthy of our animated, appreciative hand gestures than others. One of our favourite examples is the still relatively new ragazzo on the block, Cucina at Marriott Resort Palm Jumeirah, Dubai. And it’s not joining the gang by grace of pizza/pasta alone (although the monthly pasta menu is an absolute essential study for the European carb-cabal) – there’s a rumbling Vesuvian vein of fire in its menu of authentic pan-Italian dishes. You can choose between sharing as well as solo portions on almost all the mains (our top picks are the braised goat (Dhs170 sharing), cartoccio sea bream (Dhs190 sharing), and grilled octopus (Dhs190 sharing)). You can find a Bacchanalian selection of wine and prosecco dispensed from taps on the wall (in addition to bottles), and there’s an on-site Gelateria, serving gelato – full of the flavours of Florence. Marriott Resort, Palm West Beach, Palm Jumeirah daily 7am to 1am. Tel: (0)4 666 1408. cucinadubai.com

From footwear, fashion, culture, and a killer hip hop music line-up, the schedule across the three-day, twonight festival is packed. BUSTA RHYMES

A rap icon who broke the mold to become the major hip hop legend

Born Trevor George Smith Jr. in Brooklyn, New York, Busta Rhymes emerged from the gritty streets of East Flatbush with a fire in his soul and a passion for rhymes that would change the course of hip hop history. Bursting onto the scene in the early ‘90s as a founding member of the iconic Leaders of the New School, he quickly became a force to be reckoned with. His lightning-fast delivery, unparalleled stage presence, and revolutionary style elevated him to the upper echelons of rap royalty. He didn’t just ride the wave of hip hop; he created his own tidal wave. With groundbreaking albums like The Coming, When Disaster Strikes, and Extinction Level Event: The Final World Front, he shattered conventions, pushing the boundaries of what rap could be. Hear him live as he headlines Sole DXB on Sunday December 10. WHATSON.AE | DECEMBER 2023 49

EUGÈNE EUGÈNE A beautiful brasserie in the most unlikely of locations

O

nce upon a time, Eugène Eugène was but a lone tennis court – a stowed away sports complex on the second floor of the Kempinski Mall of the Emirates. Not that you’d spot any sign of that now. Green court fencing has been replaced with sky-high glass windows, and today, under the management of hospitality giants Rikas Group, it is a brand-new brasserie evoking the charm of a country home conservatory; its glass roof helping to bathe the entire restaurant in natural light. In the heart of the restaurant is an opal bar covered in vines, while other tables and red booths enveloped in plants are scattered behind, with a huge patio right at the back. It is a genuinely gorgeous garden in the heart of the city. The menu is meticulously crafted, overseen by corporate chef Gilles Bosquet, and curated by the talented head chef Yannis Sgard (of Burj Al Arab and Four Seasons George V Paris pedigree). The result is delightful brasserie fodder; French ‘souvenir’ fare without the frills. There is yellowtail (Dhs58) topped with half a hazelnut and a lemon drizzle that makes the lips pucker. A dinky

pizzetta (Dhs55) arrives on a wooden pedestal. It is layered with taleggio cheese, caramelised onion, quince paste and pine nuts. It is half a dozen mouthfuls of joy. A properly made avocado Caesar (Dhs52) features pristine cos lettuce lathered in dressing, fresh Parmesan, anchovies, egg and croutons. Like most dishes at Eugène Eugène, the serving portions are small, so dive in early. By this point a quiet calm has settled over our table. It’s that delight which comes from knowing you are in safe hands; that whatever is delivered here will almost certainly be worth the time and money. From the mains, the menu description

of the roasted whole baby chicken (Dhs125) doesn’t do justice for this charming – if petite – farmhouse-style roast. The chicken is moist. The skin crunches. The juices release with a faint hint of rosemary. There are a few wellseasoned baby potatoes and mushrooms and a whole roasted garlic should you wish to punch up your meal. It is everything you want a dish to be. Even the cordon bleu with Comté cheese and fresh truffle (Dhs155) is hard to criticise. But is there ever anything wrong with melted cheese and ham? Unsurprisingly at this point, chef Yannis doesn’t drop the ball at dessert either. For full bellies, there’s a red fruit pavlova (Dhs50) with effortlessly WHAT’S ON light cracker-shaped VERDICT meringue resting on Brasseries yoghurt ice cream and are having a berries. It’s an airy treat moment in with an explosion of Dubai, and textures. Eugène Eugène Kempinski Mall has rightfully of the Emirates, Al stolen the Barsha, daily, 12pm to spotlight. IKI SUSHI DUBAI

A real contender for Dubai’s sushi serving crown...

M

y number one trigger in food writing is being invited “on a culinary journey”. It’s cliched, tired, often used erroneously and if you ever see me using it unironically, you have my permission to invite me on an expletiveridden condemnation journey. That said, I genuinely think that Iki Sushi might have Dubai’s most organic claim for being able to figuratively transport you to another place. The interior design, the pageantry of dress, the service, the grand theatre of the chef-adjacent tabletop preparation – it all conspires to perform the most astounding sort of cerebrally transportive conjuring trick. There are two omakase dining sessions at this new Al Barari eatery, one at 6pm and one at 9pm, available from Thursday to Sunday at its KOA Canvas location.

62 DECEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE

Your menu path is split between Kyo (Dhs1,000 – three appetisers, and 10 pieces of sushi) and Miyako (Dhs1,500 for five appetisers and 11 pieces of sushi). They both come with miso soup, maki rolls and a sweet omelette finish. It’s a boutique set-up with scant seating that drives an intimate mode of dining. The decorative elements are a Kurosawa film still – dark wood, Japanese steel and a kitchen area cloaked by a downlit white drape, emblazoned with the inked ‘Iki’ character. A shrine of sufficient sanctity to host the revered art of authentic sushi making. Starters include an uni amuse bouche, a seabream dashi, scored squid and a lacquered tranche of unagi. For me, there’s immense joy to be found in confronting your ever-maturing palate with the jostling subtleties of Japanese cuisine, and the Iki appetisers are a fertile proving ground for the endeavour. The sushi element is so far beyond anything I have experienced in Dubai – it effectively resigns its bigger name competitors to the same category as supermarket-bought, plastic soy fish, sushi

selection boxes. With a combination of precise ceremony and muscle memory, the chef lays the pieces out one by one. Pike, yellowtail, chutoro, squid, sea bream – thumbed with warm rice that’s been marinated in whisper-sweet rice vinegar. At the ‘starting from’ price tag, it’s not within the means of most to be a regular Friday night out. But if you are a genuine sushi mega fan, it’s a lot cheaper than a round trip to Osaka. More cash-splashing justifications can be found in wee small Iki details. For example, if you order a bottle from the sake menu, you get to choose from an ornate collection of colourful blown-glass drinking vessels. Our more searching questions for the chef, require a translation from the exquisitely uniformed waitress. Outside, the Careems of Dubai cruise by. Inside, Japan has us now. REVIEW:

THE DUCK HOOK TURKEY TAKEAWAY Gobble, ‘til you wobble…

T

he festive season is a time for family gatherings and frequent feasting. But the elaborate preparation required for these sorts of events can be enough to put even the chirpiest elves in a ‘fowl’ mood. Step forward Dubai’s turkey takeaway offerings– allowing you to outsource the time consuming kitchen tasks that come with a festive roast, giving you time to focus on the important things… Yuletide vibe, panic present shopping, wrapping and napping. And of the many, varied options out there, The Duck Hook’s version is often cited as king of the trimmings – a roast, worth taste testing. The delivery arrives in two sturdy boxes with the various components securely packed in tin-foil containers. Once the table is set, we turn on the festive tunes

and link arms for the traditional Christmas dinner starting claxon – the cracker pull (a classy addition by The Duck Hook). Paper crowns on, we dig in, passing food trays around, serving others and helping ourselves to our fave festive flaves. Plates are quickly piled with slices of tender roast turkey, maple roasted parsnips and carrots with plenty of bite. Other team-approved trimmings include the sweet braised red cabbage, and there seems to be positive consensus on the usually divisive Brussels sprouts. The shining veg star on top of the Christmas tree for us is the cauliflower cheese, sorry, ‘cauliflower gratin’ to give it its appropriately fancy title. The veal pigs-in-blankets are amongst the best versions we’ve seen on delivery here. Roast potatoes often don’t travel

particularly well – these crispy, golden rascals endure the journey admirably. The lubrication for the banquet-in-abox comes via a jus-emboldened gravy, litres of sour-sweet cranberry sauce, and a more layered-than-your-average bread sauce. Though stuffed like a flock of proverbial turkeys, we’re not a team that backs down in the face of a sweet course challenge. And what a selection there is at The Duck Hook. Vegan apple crumble, Christmas pudding, and the clear table favourite – sticky toffee pudding. The toffee sauce and custard are poured indiscriminately and shamelessly across the various desserts, mixed in with incidental mince pies. Truly, the sort of gluttonous abandon you can only get away with at a Christmas dinner. We opted for an eight-person turkey delivery (Dhs1,540) and had enough for substantial Boxing Day leftovers. The turkey comes par-cooked and should be finished and served hot from the oven at home. There’s a vegan option on offer as well. WHAT’S ON Dhs495 for two, VERDICT Dhs825 for four, An indulgent Dhs1,540 for eight and turkey Dhs2,365 for 12. 48 takeaway hours advance notice you’re sure to required. Signor Sassi

Tagomago

Signor Sassi, the iconic Knightsbridge hotspot, opened at the new chic dining destination, St Regis Gardens, on the rooftop of Nakheel Mall in October. The venue aesthetic is quintessential Italian with touches of Dubai glamour. On the menu, you’ll find delicate antipasti, traditional pasta, succulent meat dishes, and beautifully presented seafood. @signorsassidubai

Set across a two-storey lighthouse at Azure Residences on the Palm, a shiny new concept opened earlier this year, taking the spot of Il Faro. From Rikas Hospitality, the brains behind Twiggy, Kyma and Mimi Kakushi, Tagomago is a Balearicinspired beachside spot, home to a restaurant, bar, beach club, and soon, an adult-only pool. @tagomagodubai

The Dubai restaurants we said hello and goodbye to in 2023 We bid a fond farewell to the fallen and welcome a slew of new restaurants with open arms…

GOODBYE

Marea

Train Beach Club

New York, fine-dining Italian restaurant Marea closed its doors after a four-year stint in DIFC. The restaurant was known for its delectable Italian dishes, tasty cocktails, and sophisticated interiors. We’re still waiting to find out what will take its place in Gate Avenue, so stay tuned.

It was a favoured spot for workouts and tan-topping for fitness fanatics in Dubai, but sadly, Train Beach Club closed its doors back in June, after four years at La Mer. The whole of La Mer, including the waterpark, cinema, and restaurants, have since closed following the redevelopment and highly anticipated opening of J1 Beach. WHATSON.AE | DECEMBER 2023 67

EAT // A YEAR IN REVIEW Dinner by Heston

Eleven Green

Above Eleven

Helmed by gastronomic magician Heston Blumenthal, the iconic Dinner by Heston, located in Atlantis The Royal, received a well-deserved Michelin Star just months after opening. The menu takes guests on a journey through medieval Britain with historic recipes dating back to the 1300s. @dinnerbyhbdubai

After accruing a small legion of fans across the city with their award-winning Bull Burger, paella pop-ups, and sell-out supper clubs, the team behind Tano’s at 8 opened a new burger joint, Eleven Green, in Jumeirah’s Meyan Mall. Order the famous bull burger followed by the fudge à la mode, you won’t be disappointed. @elevengreen.uae

Dubai is the perfect setup for whiling away on a rooftop, from sundowners by the sea to the urban lights of Downtown. Earlier this year, Bangkok-born Above Eleven opened on the 14th floor of Marriott Resort Palm Jumeirah. The box-ticking spot offers a Japanese-Peruvian menu, spectacular views, cocktails and vibes. @aboveelevendubai

HELLO GOODBYE

Hell’s Kitchen

CMP Bar & Grill

Baby Q

In November, Bluewaters said farewell to its only hotel, Caesars Palace, which is to be rebranded as a Banyan Tree. With the takeover, Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen has also officially closed and construction on the new restaurant, a French dining concept called Alizee, has commenced.

Back in May, it was announced that The Pointe on Palm Jumeirah would close for redevelopment. The Pointe was home to the record-breaking Palm fountains overlooking Atlantis The Palm, as well a number of popular restaurants including casual dining steakhouse CMP Bar and Grill, which is set to reopen in February 2024 in City Walk as The Rare.

After 10 years, Media One Hotel’s popular bar and trusty haunt, Baby Q (formerly Q43) officially closed its doors forever. The purple-hued venue, perched on the 43rd floor, was known for its ladies’ nights, after-work happy hours, and late-night parties. An irreplaceable spot, the floor is now used as offices and co-working spaces.

Soul Kitchen

The Dubai Edition Hotel welcomed a stunning new cocktail bar during the summer called Agora. Inspired by Grecian charm, the botanical cocktail bar and social club is the next big place to see and be seen for the sophisticated Downtown crowd. @agora_dxb

Located in ICD Brookfield Place, The Guild is the latest restaurant to join DIFC’s robust dining scene and the newest brainchild of hospitality big guns EatX. The sophisticated, multi-tasking venue is divided into five distinct spaces, each catering to different moods and desires: The Nurseries, The Potting Shed, The Rockpool, The Salon, and The Aviaries. @theguilddubai

Arguably one of the coolest new additions to Dubai’s nightlife scene, Beirut-export Soul Kitchen opened its doors in Business Bay earlier this year. Brought to us by The Factory People, Soul Kitchen has music at its heart, as well as unique art pieces, exciting cocktails, and flavours inspired by the Lebanese Diaspora. @soulkitchendxb

HELLO GOODBYE

Inti

Indochine

Shakespeare and Co.

It was a short but sweet run for Inti, a rooftop restaurant and lounge which opened in the Dubai Edition Hotel in 2022. Found on the 23rd floor of the Downtown Dubai hotel, the space was known for its brilliant views of the Burj Khalifa and Latin American-style dishes.

New York’s popular celebrity haunt, Indochine closed its doors after four years in DIFC. The Dubai outpost buzzed to life the second it opened, backed by VKD Hospitality, which is also responsible for the likes of Miss Lily’s and Honeycomb Hi-Fi. It’s set to be replaced by London’s acclaimed Mr. Chow.

Twenty-two years since opening its first restaurant in Dubai, quirky homegrown chain Shakespeare and Co. officially closed all 32 of its UAE locations this year, marking the end of an era. The Victorian-inspired café was a community hub for many long-term Dubai residents, known for its eclectic menu, particularly European delicacies with a Lebanese twist. THE 305 Welcome to Miami, it’s been waiting for you

P

erfectly pink and candy striped as if it were taken from a 1960s Floridian travel brochure, The 305 is the latest beach club to pop up on the shores of Palm West Beach. Sure, it sets itself apart with dazzling vibes and interiors. But The 305 has more to it than just good looks. Brought to us by one of the leaders in the nightlife scene, Solutions Leisure, it comes from some pretty pedigree stock. Inspired by the pool party culture of Miami, it is quite possibly the ultimate solution when looking for a new day-cay experience. With a sunsoaked mix of beach -appropriate bangers playing through the speakers, guests can tuck into dishes from a menu that’s best described as allpleasing and internationally influenced. Highlights include bluefin tuna tartare (Dhs120), incredible surf and turf arepas (Dhs90) and some gnarly doorstep

sandwiches (from Dhs75). When I arrived, I was directed to my day bed which, was conveniently located to the side of the venue which, if you’re like me and enjoy people watching (no shame in it) then you might want to ask for a bed by the beach. However, our more secluded spot did offer us the opportunity to enjoy a genuinely relaxing day of tan-topping.

For front row seats, I’d recommend sipping pretty next to the infinity pool or sitting for lunch in the sand-below-foot restaurant. One of the most visually engaging aspects of the venue is the bar. There’s a good range of mixology served here, and the presentation is on the playful side of sophistication. If you’re in the mood for something sweet and refreshing, the Palm Breeze (Dhs80) is a tropical tipple worth investigating. Or for something with real South Beach Latin swagger, sangria (Dhs70) always tastes WHAT’S ON great in the sunshine. UCHI, DIFC

A tiny homegrown Japanese spot in Dubai’s huge foodie capital, DIFC...

D

ubai-based restaurateur Carole Moawad, who is also the founder of popular Japanese dessert shop M’OISHI, saw her childhood dream come true when she opened Uchi in DIFC a few months ago. It’s easy to lose yourself in DIFC’s ever-expanding array of culinary offerings, still, there are some standout gems worth seeking out. The new spot, set just behind from Le Petit Beefbar, is a homegrown sushi and whisky bar in the heart of DIFC’s Gate Village. Uchi, which means ‘home’ in Japanese, is a cosy and modern dining space with a large central bar surrounded by small dark wooden tables, a sleek sushi counter, and an intimate outdoor terrace. Foodies will most likely want to sit up at the sushi counter while the restaurant and terrace are ideal for couples and larger groups. In true izakaya style, dishes are brought out in succession throughout the evening. The service is knowledgeable, attentive, and upscale while still being personal and friendly. We’re told to enjoy the meal with a carafe of sake, which has been

perfectly paired to complement the majority of the dishes. We’re happy to oblige. We start out with broccolini tempura (Dhs49) and the Uchi garden salad (Dhs76). The broccolini, although served slightly cold, is crispy and moreish while the salad wows us with its artistic presentation served on a fragrant vegetable biscuit and balanced with a sweet sesame dressing. We’d order both again in a heartbeat. The delicious array of sushi cannot be overlooked. We order the spicy tuna (Dhs129), served in a kimchi granita and elegantly rolled with confit ginger, dry miso, offering a symphony of flavours and texture in our mouths. Sure to be a crowd favourite.

However, for us, the avocado saykio miso (Dhs60) steals the show. Four large and intricate pieces are served with crispy avocado, arare, and confit cucumber for an impressive combination of creaminess, crunchiness, saltiness, and well, deliciousness. The super sweet Hokkaido scallops (Dhs180) come seared and live up to their meaty reputation. An initial crunch is immediately followed by a melt-in-themouth sensation with the rich balance of flavours from the Wagyu crumbs, cauliflower foam, and cocoa butter. The best dish on the menu though might be the mushroom bibimbap (Dhs129), taken from the lunch menu, this comforting plate of rice, mushrooms, and fresh truffle is a thing of beauty and sure to keep the stomach full but the heart even fuller. BRUNCH REVIEW:

LA DOMENICA ITALIANA, PIERCHIC Sunday brunch, the Italian way...

I

f you’ve got great, authentic Italian food, prepared by an experienced, passionate and talented chef, you really don’t need much razzle-dazzle as garnish. Which is what makes the Pierchic case interesting. It’s a fine dining pearl spun out on a long wooden pier attached to the eternally stately Jumeirah Al Qasr. And it stands there, out on stilts in the wild blue hues of the Arabian Gulf, with wrap-around 360 degree vistas of the Burj Al Arab, Jumeirah coastline and rhythmic waves vanishing over the horizon. That’s a lot of collateral eye candy. So there’s an understandable high expectation to their Sunday, La Domenica Italiana, brunch. It’s Dhs270 for three courses (that’s food only, but there’s a house beverage bolt-on for an additional Dhs200), which seems like an almost impossibly fair price. A curiosity worth

76 DECEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE

exploring. Beyond the surface glow of its surroundings, it’s full of old-world charm, a nouvelle vague live band, service is formal but warm, and the starched white tablecloths are a rallying standard. It’s not a modern fit-out, but the veins of wood and glass that run through it are the sort of timeless motifs that transcend the fads of fashion. Soon after we’re seated, the antipasto plates arrive as an entourage. Our collection includes some elegant surf ‘n’ turf – vitello tonnato, thin slices of veal doused in a creamy, tuna and caper-enhanced sauce; a rich aubergine parmigiana, made with the sort of tomatoes that make you doubt you’ve ever tasted actual tomatoes before. Both score 11/10. There’s burrata, because this is Dubai; and fritto misto, with crispy

calamari, white fish and courgette served alongside a tangy ginger mayonnaise. The main course is pasta della Nonna, ostensibly a rotation of chef Beatrice Segoni’s greatest carb-based hits. This week’s dish is a cream and meatstuffed cannelloni creation. After a few laboured laps of me coyly pushing morsels around my plate, the waiter shoots me a look that seems to say “Is everything ok? You’ve barely touched your mulchy tubules.” It is a touch too sweet for me, and so it was a challenge to mask my delight when the vegetarian option, a gnocchi pomodoro of obnoxiously fine Italian pedigree, arrives. This particular sharing portion is worth the brunch asking price alone. Our lunch ends with Nonna’s tiramisu. I am fully convinced, without any need for prior research, that this tiramisu recipe is from a beautiful bygone dolce era, marginally evolved – of that I’m also sure, but it has molten heritage within its creamy folds. Pierchic, Jumeirah WHAT’S ON Al Qasr, Sun, 1pm to VERDICT 2.45pm, Dhs270. Tel: (800) 323232. @pierchicdubai

CULTURE // FILM Words: Miles Buckeridge

Billy Bob Thornton Bad Santa

Tim Allen

Bottom of our round-up, and definitely getting coal for Christmas, is the star of 2003’s alternative black comic take on the Christmas movie. Thornton’s mall Santa is more hobo than ho-ho-ho, an inveterate womaniser, petty thief and schnapps fiend whose festive crime spree is interrupted by, for once, a more wholesome sort of holiday spirit. Against all odds the movie ends with Bad Santa caring about people other than himself. It’s a bottom-ofthe-sack kind of Xmas miracle, but we’ll take it.

The Santa Clause movies

David Harbour Violent Night I imagine the studio pitch for this movie included the line ‘a traditional Christmas tale, with a little sprinkling of John Wick.’ It’s filed under the (absolutely legitimate) Die Hard subsection of the festive film genre and features Harbour’s grizzled St. Nick meting out jolly justice to a gang of single-manifesto-pledge, pro-humbug kidnappers. He might not be the most cuddly iteration of festivecheer-personified, but sometimes you need to sleigh, to save Christmas Day.

This franchise – placing a reluctant Tim ‘the Toolman’ Allen in the titular man-in-red role – ran to three movies across the nineties and early noughties. The premise is simple, Scott Calvin (Allen) plays a Grinchy big-toy exec, who inadvertently kills old Father C while he’s doing the chimney shimmy on his roof. Following the Santacide, Calvin puts on the suit and finds himself contractually obliged to deliver toys (a legal ‘Santa Clause’) until such time as he too shuffles off this tinselly coil. Scott eventually accepts the reality he’s present-ed with and embodies the Yuletide spirit with ‘bowl-full-of-jelly’ gusto.

RANKED Claus for applause

84 DECEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE

David Huddleston Santa Claus: The Movie

Kurt Russell The Christmas Chronicles movies I’m not sure who had ‘seeing Kurt Russell as Santa’ on their Christmas wish list, but I think we can all agree on being grateful to them and Netflix for the manifesting. The two Christmas Chronicles films pay homage to the traditional feelgood festive format, which tackles the cognitive dissonance behind adults not believing in Santa; of Christmas cheer having tangible, actionable value; and flying reindeer. There’s also a big song and dance number, Russell’s real life wife Goldie Hawn playing Mrs Claus – and after a long career in action movies, you instinctively back Kurt to secure the sack.

Originally released back in 1985, the film opens with a Papa Noel origin story – how he got his powers (no, it wasn’t being bitten by a radioactive reindeer) and why he embarked on his toy delivering mission. There’s also a confrontation with that big 80s movie theme of ‘greed is good’ when an outcast elf (Dudley Moore) is co-opted into toy retail hell by a deliciously malicious John Lithgow. Huddleston’s Santa comes across in a joyously authentic way, and he probably would be the ultimate big screen Santa if it wasn’t for...

Richard Attenborough Miracle on 34th Street (1994) Some people may remember this Attenborough brother from his velociraptor bothering stint on Negligence-Suit-Island but for us, it’s all about his appearance in the reboot to the 1947 Christmas classic, Miracle on 34th Street. The film dives surprisingly deeply into the concept of belief and the importance of occasionally suspending disbelief. It’s filled with heartwarming interactions, powerful performances and knee-sat requests of Peter Pollywog Patrol Frogs. The whole experience being given an extra mistletoe and logs on the fire boost by the, now sadly deceased, Dickie Attenborough who embodied the spirit of Santa so well, that we’re still not 100 per cent sure he was acting.

CULTURE // PICK N ICKS

Pick n Icks This month the What’s On team select hits and mistletoes from the world of festive traditions. Find out what are the stars atop our tree, and the humbugs that make us shrug Alice Holtham,

Group Editor PICK: Matching Christmas PJs Any other time of year, the outrageously novelty prints found on Xmas pjs would simply be unacceptable. But come December, family portraits fill my Instagram feed of people dressed in light-up reindeers, disco Santas, and ostentatious fairisle print. And I love it. ICK: Tinsel It doesn’t look good on a tree, nor do I particularly like it hanging off home furnishings. It sheds, it leaves a mess, it is the runt of the Christmas decoration (g)litter. I’ve never found a piece of tinsel I like.

Aarti Saundalkar,

Online Reporter PICK: A Garfield Christmas This classic animation follows Garfield, Jon and Odie as they make their way to Jon’s family’s farmhouse to celebrate an old-fashioned holiday. Garfield is grouchy as ever but the spirit of Christmas manages to warm his soul. ICK: Santa Baby The Christmas songs always start as soon as November 1 hits, but whenever Santa Baby comes on, I always hit the skip button. It’s about a lady who wants (super) extravagant gifts, which goes against what Christmas is truly about. Ick!

Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter PICK:

Spending Christmas in South Africa For a lot of expats, Christmas means a blanket of snow and a log fire. For me, it’s summer sun and for the first time in 10 years I will be able to enjoy a summer Christmas in South Africa. Nothing beats a braai and an African sunset on Christmas Day. ICK: Christmas pudding Calories don’t count over Christmas, stop trying to make things that aren’t healthy – healthy. Give me a pavlova, my mum’s Christmas ice cream or my grandma’s claret jelly but miss me with that Christmas pudding garbage.

86 DECEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE

Miles Buckeridge,

Deputy Editor PICK: Christmas cheer My favourite thing about the festive season is the ‘good vibes only’ mentality. The reciprocal smile when you wish someone “happy holiday”, the hot choccy, kids’ present opening faces, Barbara from accounts letting rip at the office karaoke party. This is the real magic of Christmas. ICK: Family Monopoly What’s the true meaning of Christmas? I can tell you what isn’t. A five hour-deep dive into the darker side of capitalism, getting bankrupted by someone still in diapers, and routinely mugged off by ‘Chance’ cards.

Tamara Wright,

Online Reporter PICK: The run-up to Christmas As a mum, the run-up to Christmas is the best part: decorating the tree, writing letters to Santa, watching Christmas films in matching pjs, festive markets, hiding presents, and there’s no better place to get that fuzzy festive feeling than Dubai. ICK: Roast turkey

Obviously I like bacon wrapped sausages, duck fat roasties, cheesy leeks and Yorkie pudds drenched in gravy. But, along with peas, the gobble gobble bird is dead last on my festive plate space priority list.

Dinesh Ramanathan, Deputy Editor PICK: Home

Alone I’ll never get tired of watching movies from the 90s, and the Home Alone series has to be one of my favourites. Mischievous lad that I was, I could always relate to Culkin’s shenanigans. ICK: Restrictive Christmas cheer To me, it’s simply a universal time of giving, togetherness, family and gratitude, and a good opportunity to look back on the year that was while trying to spread cheer, smile and forgive, before we’re back for the mayhem of a brand-new year.

Manaal Fatimah,

Junior Online Reporter PICK: Plum cake The humble plum cake may be one of the less popular offerings on the Christmas table, but it has all my love. Concerningly sweet and with just the right amount of bite. Delish. ICK: That I have none Considering the fact that I don’t actually celebrate Christmas, I don’t think I’m qualified to state my opinion in this department. Cheers to cheer only.

DECEMBER 8 TO 10

Slava’s Snowshow Warning: Don’t book tickets to Slava’s Snowshow expecting a laugh-a-minute comedy. It’s not that kind of Christmas performance. Instead, it’s something both gentler and more surreal from the mind of Russian-born, France-based performer and creator Slava Polunin. Our hero Assissiaï, is a Chaplin-like figure in a baggy yellow jumpsuit who wanders through an imaginary world. The show has no dialogue, no overarching story. Rather, it is a series of delightfully oddball scenes

that range between simple acts of physical comedy to extraordinarily realised setpieces taking place in a theatrical blizzard. One minute you’re giggling over a classic suitcase gag, the next you’re watching mysterious, winged figures drift across the stage like something out of a dream. Dubai Opera, Downtown Dubai, Fri 8pm, Sat 3pm and 8pm, Sun 3pm and 8pm, from Dhs225. dubaiopera.com

DECEMBER 9 TO 10

Magic Phil’s Cirque du Silly Join Dubai’s perky family entertainer as he kicks off the festive fun with his frivolous one-man show. This time our old pal in green discovers tattered props and bag of tricks while clearing up an old circus. His bright idea? To become the star of his own show, but can he pull it off, or will it be a oneman circus full of chaos. Prepare for singalong silliness, and magic tricks, of course. Theatre by QE2, Port Rashid, from Dhs80, Sat 11am and 3pm, Sun 11am. dubai.platinumlist.net

4 CHRISTMAS WISHES WITH MAGIC PHIL

DECEMBER 15 TO 17

The Nutcracker Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without The Nutcracker. Tchaikovsky’s 1892 piece, with its dancing dolls, feisty mice and fairies – all sugared over with snowflakes and delicious music – is probably the most popular ballet in the world. See it at the Dubai Opera brought to life by the Ballet Theatre and State Opera Orchestra of Astana from Kazakhstan. Dubai Opera, Downtown Dubai, Fri 8pm, Sat 2pm and 8pm, Sun 7pm, from Dhs300. dubaiopera.com

DECEMBER 14 TO 26 DECEMBER 15 TO 26

Peter Pan Flying into the QE2 this Christmas will be this exciting pantomime adventure. Follow Peter Pan, the forever-young boy, on his adventures with Wendy, Michael, John, and the Lost Boys as they encounter pirates, and the infamous Captain Hook. Filled with laughter, excitement, and captivating choreography, this show appeals to both the young and the young at heart, offering an immersive escape into a fantastical world. Hook your tickets early to guarantee the best seats. Theatre by QE2, Port Rashid, timings vary, from Dhs75. dubai.platinumlist.net

Beauty and the Beast The Dubai Panto team returns for its 17th year with their take on the timeless fairytale, Beauty and the Beast. Follow the adventures of young bookworm Bella, as she befriends the monstrous Beast and discovers the true meaning of love. With captivating costumes, lively music, and uproarious antics, this family pantomime promises fun, laughter, and lots of panto-perfect audience participation. Fairmont The Palm, Palm Jumeirah, timings vary, from Dhs75. dubaipanto.com

What’s your big Christmas wish this year? To spread as much happiness and silliness to everybody. I mean, ‘tis the season to be silly! If you could perform a magic trick for Santa, what would you do to impress him? I would make all his candy disappear – not by magic, I’d just eat it. Although that might not impress him, so maybe I can make them reappear. Imagine that, unlimited candy canes and gingerbread. Now that’s magic! What’s your dream Christmas dinner? Oh, I love Christmas dinner so, as it is – with all the trimmings – is a dream anyway. But my dreamiest Christmas dinner isn’t about the food; it’s about sharing the magic around the dinner table with those I love. If you could create a new magical creature to help Santa deliver presents, what would be? It would have to be a magic rubber chicken. His powers would be a magical ‘squawk’ that only Santa could hear. He would check that all the boys and girls are asleep then send a magic ‘squawk’ to let him know the coast is clear.

SPORT // EMIRATES DUBAI 7s Words: Alice Holtham

THE SUPER 7s

An epic festival weekender of sport, music, food and family-fun, Emirates Dubai 7s returns from December 1 to 3. Here’s 7 reasons you won’t want to miss it

World class rugby

Sports excellence aplenty Fans can witness exciting sporting action from a whole host of sporting disciplines. There’s the ever-growing cricket tournament; the annual netball tournament that takes part across the four-court netball zone; and Rebound, an exhilarating padel tournament that draws some 240 competitors. Plus, returning for a second year is WODON3, the Emirates Dubai 7s fitness competition that sees teams of two men and two women go head-to-head in a series of strength and fitness challenges.

This year, fans can look forward to seeing the first edition of the newly introduced World Rugby HSBC SVNS series. A total of 24 top international teams – 12 men’s and 12 women’s – will take part. In the Men’s Tournament, South Africa has a chance to complete an unprecedented hat-trick of Dubai victories having been crowned champions in 2021 and 2022. In the Women’s competition, Australia remain the team to beat, but with strong competition from the likes of last year’s knock out stage contenders USA, New Zealand and France, 2023 it is set to be one of the most closely contested competitions yet.

Fabulous family entertainment

Food, glorious food The whole festival foodie offering has been given a glow-up for this year, bringing more culinary variety, global cuisines and healthy options to the festival than ever before. Regional favourites like Fibber Magee’s, Pickl and Gino’s Deli will keep festivalgoers fed.

Musical headliners Expect a double dose of music magic as Brit popstar Becky Hill and American DJ MK bring the noise to the Frequency on 8 stage. Expect to hear Hill’s chart-topping hits like Lose Control, My Heart Goes, Disconnect, and more. For house music fans, DJ MK has got a record bag full of baseline bangers. And that’s not all, UK garage duo Artful Dodger will perform a sundowner session on the Beats on 2 stage on Saturday afternoon. Those visiting on the Friday with a little bit of luck, will see British musical duo DJ Luck & MC Neat on the Beats on 2 stage, keeping the dance floor moving with their infectious beats and energy. Don’t forget to dress for the occasion – this year’s fancy dress code is ‘Land and Sea’.

With free entry for under 10s, it really is the perfect family day out. There’s soft play for little ones and an inflatable kids’ zone, plus a Disney sing-along, silent disco, face painting, arts and crafts and so much more.

One for the ladies To escape the madness of the pumping party scene or thundering matches on the pitch, ladies can enjoy a more refined ambience at the Prosecco Lounge. Here, guests can sip crisp glasses of bubbles and enjoy the soulful sounds of live guitar.

A VIP upgrade The ultimate way to see and be seen at the Emirates Dubai 7s is with the Hospitality VIP Ticket. It’s currently sold out for the Saturday and there are limited passes left for Sunday. Reserve seating is still available as an upgrade. Hospitality packages come with weekend-long access to The Hangar, located in the heart of the action. This also means the best seats in the house for all the rugby matches on Pitch 1, and exclusive access to the VIP-only grandstand bar. There’s free-flowing beverages from 11am to 8pm, plus allinclusive food included.

Surfin’ UAE Wakesurfing for beginners with IWAKE

Thrown into the deep end...

W

hile Dubai may not be known for its rolling waves, it does have a strong surfing community and access to world-class instructors and equipment. And one of the sports gaining more attention from aspiring aqua adventurers is wakesurfing, offered by Dubai-based water sports communities such as IWAKE, where the surf is always up. Wakesurfing combines surfing and water-skiing techniques allowing you to ride the endless wave behind a boat. Exhilarating and liberating, it’s also a full body workout that allows you to challenge your balance and core strength. Nestled in the vibrant Jebel Ali Marina, IWAKE transforms the uncrowded waves and calmer waters into a playground for watersports enthusiasts. And it looks very much like our type of board meeting, so we wet suited-up to try it out.

100 DECEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE

After arriving at JA Marina on a foggy Friday morning, we hopped on the state-of-the-art bright pink boat and met our instructor and captain Sam, a wakesurfing maestro with an infectious passion for the sport. After putting on our lifejacket, Sam tells us to jump into the water and throws us the rope. Just like that. Within minutes we’re surfing behind the boat, music blasting. Make no mistake, it’s not easy. Getting up on the board is probably the biggest challenge for a first timer, then one slight move off-balance and splash, you’re back down. Fall down 50 times, stand up five. (Beginners tip: Do remember to let go of the rope when you fall to avoid being dragged by the boat). But with a few pointers from Sam, you’ll be riding the waves like a pro in no time, one-handed or, even, no-handed. There’s no feeling like it. Ready to conquer the Arabian waves? IWAKE caters to all levels of experience,

offering one-on-one and group lessons for up to five participants. Lessons are priced at Dhs390 for half an hour or Dhs690 for a full hour at Jebel Ali Marina, or if you prefer the scenic views of Dubai Islands, half-hour classes are available from Dhs350. IWAKE, Jebel Ali Marina, JA The Resort, Jebel Ali, Dubai, from Dhs350. Tel: (0)52 849 7310. iwakedxb.com

Musandam VOYAGE LIKE NO OTHER

After a day of snorkeling with turtles, it’s nice to come back to hotel-grade bed sheets and a luxuriously private dhow

T

wo turtles were resting on a bed of crimson red coral. As we snorkelled above, the hawksbill duo looked up and slowly pushed off into the blue. They weren’t alone: schools of fish came into view the moment we jumped into the sea. A kaleidoscope of colour coming at us from every angle. We followed our guide as he traversed the creature-rich waters just below the surface of Musandam’s enormous mountains. Most come to Musandam – located at the northeastern most point of the Arabian Peninsula in the Sultanate of Oman – to get close to nature, either by scuba diving, rock climbing or hand-line fishing as the locals do. Others make the two-hour journey from Dubai to spend a luxurious getaway in one of the region’s most stunning properties – the award-winning Six Senses Zighy Bay. The 82 all-villa beach resort is laid out like a traditional Omani village featuring individual stonewalled villas complete with private plunge pools; the craggy mountains cradling the resort from the back, and a panoramic view of the sapphire blue waters of Musandam’s fjords at the front.

The succulent Omani prawns and freshly-caught sea bream were standout dishes. The ability to rest your head in a beautiful air-conditioned bedroom with hotel-grade bed sheets and a plump mattress is a perk. But nothing beats sleeping outside, and the daybeds on the upper deck provide the most picturesque platform for stargazing. The next morning as we’re out kayaking across the calm waters before breakfast, another huge school of fish surfaced, soared and splashed back in the water. “Shame we don’t have our fishing lines as there’s a lot of fish below us,” said Humaid. We weren’t too phased; Dhahab dining experience if we wanted locally caught Omani fish, it was on the menu aboard. Once used by traders on epic Dhahab lounge journeys across the high seas, today, the dhow is reserved for private Musandam voyages, setting sail to the less-discovered side of Oman. Onboard, the 90-foot vessel is able accommodate up to six people, and features three bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms. As we set sail, our head waiter Rahul is on call to bring us Dhahab master bedroom bathroom fruit or a refreshing smoothie as we lie on the huge sand-yellow loungers admiring the scenery. Local fishermen wave from speed boats as they zoom past; dolphins breach the surface entertaining us with their little jumps; and our guide, Humaid, regales stories of his childhood and love for his country. It’s in these moments, when we’re able to create connections to the cultures and people that make places special, that help make for richer experiences. TRAVEL // FESTIVE MARKETS Words: Manaal Fatimah

Make like Father Christmas and take a tour of these jolly good festive markets from around the world

W

hat is the essence of a festival? Lights? Definitely. Food rituals? Absolutely. Special snacks you binge on once a year, to such an extent you don’t want to see them again for another 360 days? Of course, Little tangible tokens of love from one to another? Sure. Good will and festive cheer? Check. Over the top decorations and outfit pageantry? Certainly.

106 DECEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE

Put all that together and you have the blueprint to a Christmas market. These kiosked hubs of festive fun have been around since the Middle Ages, drawing crowds from far and wide. We’ve ‘mulled’ it over and these top our marketleading recommendations for you to have a merry, happy, jolly, cheery, wonderful Christmas, this year.

Christkindelsmärik Magic of Advent Market The Christmas markets in Vienna date all the way back to the 13th century and to this day, are still regarded as one of Europe’s finest festive fairs. The Magic of Advent Market at Rathausplatz is a must-visit. Featuring more than 145 stalls amidst a network of alleys and lights, you can sample some mulled wine or gluhwein, grapple with bratwurst and revel in local Austrian cheer. This year, you can enjoy all of its festive magic until December 26.

Strasbourg is called the ‘Christmas Capital’ of France, so you already know it’s going to be good. The Christkindelsmärik in Place Brogilie is known as the oldest one in France, founded in 1570. Here, over 300 chalets hawk festive trinkets and the gastronomic traditions of the region, including Alsatian pastries and the ubiquitous warm winter wine. The markets in Strasbourg generally begin around late November and end just in time for the big day.

Union Square Christmas Market The Union Square Christmas Market is the Big Apple’s big star on the Christmas tree – indeed the largest, and most extravagant one in the city with more than 150 vendors. The holiday spirit runs rife here, from the white Christmas vibes to the twinling lights and the festive nibbles. Flanked entirely by local and small businesses, it’s perhaps the best spot to visit to have a taste of that fairytale New York Christmas cheer. This year, the market runs until December 24.

WHATSON.AE | DECEMBER 2023 107

TRAVEL // FESTIVE MARKETS

Frankfurt Christmas Market The Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market is a firm favourite for UK residents and visitors alike, and a fairly significant part of the city’s festive calendar of events. It comes to life on Victoria Square and stands proudly as the the largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany or Austria. Here, you can sample German classics like pretzels, schnitzels, bratwursts, and roasted almonds, all of which can be washed down with gluhwein, weissbier (wheat beer), or hot chocolate. There’s also loads to pick up in the way of presents – it’s as Christmas market-y as a Christmas market gets.

Christkindlesmarkt In a world of modern Christmas markets, be a Renaissance Christkindlesmarkt. This one is a veteran, one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe and still retains much of the character from yesteryear. The wooden stalls are constructed locally, and most of the goods sold by the 180 vendors are made entirely by hand. Consider it a time capsule of sorts. Sample local gingerbread, Nuremburg’s most famous festive export, and get yourself a little Prune person – traditional figurines made with prunes.

Winterfest As it turns out, no one does Christmas Eve quite like Hong Kong, where the annual Winterfest brings the community together in an amalgamation of eastern and western Christmas customs. If you happen to find yourself in the West Kowloon Cultural District this month, make sure to a pay visit witness the tallest Christmas tree in the city, and try their traditional Yuletide dish, congee. This wholesome rice porridge is seasoned with chicken broth and drops straight down the chimney into the food-that-tastes-like-a-warm-hug category.

108 DECEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE

Grote Markt The centre of all the festive action in this chocolate box Belgian city is the Town Square, where the Bruges Christmas Market attracts the greatest number of visitors. While the roots of this spot’s history don’t go very far back, it is still a gorgeous attraction, serving straight out of a Hallmark holiday movie vibes. The many rows of wooden chalets stock gifts, crafts and festive decorations, such as knit and crochet, nutcrackers, candles, manger scenes, toys and ornaments made of handblown glass and other little bits. While there, sample some local specialities like warm waffles and hot chocolate.

Santurantikuy Every year, since the 16th Century, this market has been coming to life on Christmas Eve in Cusco’s Plaza De Armas. It’s an opportunity for local artisans from across the south of the country to bring their renditions of Niño Manuelito, the Andean version of baby Jesus, to the steps and sidewalks. The highlight of Santurantikuy is the authenticity of its spiritual connection, the name literally translating to ‘saints for sale’. If you visit, make sure to get yourself a Retablo – a three-dimensional box depicting a religious scene, which is the speciality of the region.

TRAVEL // STAYCATION SPOTLIGHT Words: Miles Buckeridge

roofless majlis, with billowing silken drapes and fairy light glow for the cosiest sort of dinner setting; there are bamboo-sheltered bathroom and shower facilities; a desert kitchen, premium bar and a huge fire pit for midnight stargazing and ember-side deep and meaningfuls.

stars of the show. You get one guided ride on your way into the camp, and one on the morning of your departure. You can book nighttime expeditions from the camp too, a spot of sand meandering in search of scorpions that glow under UV light, and answering the assorted calls of nocturnal nature. Guests can grab the aux cable of the camp’s sound system for a (environmentally respectful) dune-hemmed rave and then there are the stars. The cosmic firmament in full view above your head, burning stellar pixels unhampered by interference from city lights, clouds or construction dust. It truly is an essential Dubai bucket list tick for all residents.

TENTS

FOOD AND DRINK

The eight tents are the sort you might see at a Masi Mara safari camp, and because Arabian Adventures is part of the Emirates Group, your amenities are the very same Bulgari treasures you get in EK’s business class. There’s a surprisingly comfy, duvetspread double bed and electric lantern. Outside, on the veranda, a pair of chairs and table are set up so you can soak up the camp atmosphere from a space of sophisticated seclusion. Our top tip is to go for one of the desert view tents, which are raised and look out across a seemingly endless amber sea of scrub-dashed dune tops. There’s also an option to book them all out for private parties.

Considering the fact you’re quite some distance from the nearest Deliveroo catchment area, or industrial gas range cooker, you get treated to a pretty regal feast at the camp. Dinner is a mix of Arabian mezze, dahl, free flow house drinks and, as far as we could tell, a near enough limitless surf ‘n’ turf mixed grill. After you watch the sunrise on day two, you can sit down for a breakfast of pastries, bread, scrambled egg, and sausages with as much coffee or tea as you deem fit.

Arabian Adventures Overnight Camp

Dubai might be known for its glitzy beachfront resorts, but it also offers stays that put you in touch with purer pleasures. And that’s something Arabian Adventures knows all about... LOCATION Your experience begins at around 3pm with a luxe SUV pick up from your chosen location. As you make your way to the unblemished wilderness of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR), you’ll likely receive fun and interactive Attenborough-level insights from your expert guide. Once inside the DDCR, your safari-proper begins, with bashful sandfish sightings, privileged glimpses of gazelle, oryx and a motorised trek past the fascinating flora that’s made its home in the flame-red sands. Then there’s a twilight, dune-top stop and photo op, before a cinematic sunset camel ride into camp.

FACILITIES The communal areas extend to a central 114 DECEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
