AS DEPUTY EDITOR MILES REMINDS ME OFTEN…
EDITOR’S PICKS
You spend more time with your work colleagues than you do with your spouse. At least awake. And I don’t mean to brag, but I rather hit the jackpot with mine.
Which makes this – my last editor’s letter – all the more bitersweet. So rather than dedicating it to what’s in the pages, I’m going to take a moment to appreciate the people behind them. Because as I reflect on the seven years that have passed since I first tumbled through the doors of What’s On as a driven but rather naïve junior writer, it’s the people that stick out, as much as the incredible experiences. Yes, I’ve interviewed A-Listers, confronted my biggest fears in zip lines and human sling shots, and eaten my way around hundreds of restaurants all in the name of critical reporting.
But it’s the BTS brilliance I’ve cherished. The on-duty LOLs, the outtakes, and the creative magic reserved for the lucky few - past and present - that get to be a part of this brilliant brand, that really make it so special. The talented reporters and editors, the passionate videographers and photographers, our hard working support team, all unified in their dedication What’s On.
But I must also pay tribute to our wonderful readers. Over the years I’ve read hundreds of emails, comments and DMs. You’ve trusted our opinions, you’ve corrected us, you’ve called us out, but largely you’ve supported the vision I’ve had for What’s On over the last few years, and I’m enormously grateful to have seen record numbers of you reading the magazine, visiting the website, and following us on social media.
What’s On has always served as that in-the-know friend to guide you through life in the UAE. And as I pass the baton to its next custodian, I can’t wait to see what I’ll learn.
Enjoy the issue,
Aspen laptop bag, Lawful
Talking ‘bout a
We asked for willpower for Christmas. We didn’t get it, so in the classic ‘new year, new me’ tradition, the What’s On team has set some entirely unrealistic personal goals and self-vetos for 2025. The deputy editor has given each a rating out of 10 for the likelihood of followthrough.

RESO: Learn Arabic
I’ve said this for almost a decade – but this really is the year my Arabic extends beyond Inshallah and Yalla. I’m signing up for the Eton Instiitute’s starter course from December 30, getting my New Year’s resolution started two days early. Just call me an overachiever.
ED’S BELIEVABILITY RATING: 1/10

Saundalkar, Arts & Culture Features Editor
RESO: An attitude of gratitude I have so much to be grateful for. But I do not appreciate this enough, and I find myself often envying others. This has to stop. So in 2025 I am going to maintain a gratitude diary logging whatever I am thankful for. Making it a digital version so it’s accessible to me at all times.
ED’S BELIEVABILITY RATING: 0.5/10

RESO: Stretching myself
This year, I’m focusing on making stretching breaks a habit – often small and overlooked as the day gets busy, yet impactful in reducing stress, preventing discomfort, and improving overall well-being.
ED’S BELIEVABILITY RATING: 4/10
Sheila Deocareza, Art Director
RESO: More time to do physical health, like wall Pilates
Since I’m not getting any younger, I will put more time into improving my physical health. I’ll commit to do a regular exercise like wall Pilates, which I really like to try even just twice a week to start with just to keep my bones working.
ED’S BELIEVABILITY RATING: 1/10
Miles Buckeridge, Deputy Editor
RESO: Be better at staying in touch
129.1257. 359. These aren’t map coordinates. Those are, respectively, the numbers of unread messages on my WhatsApp, Gmail and Outlook inboxes. I selfticket this behavior as it just being the unavoidable object impermanence of ADHD, but that doesn’t make me a better friend. So in 2025 I’m going to work on this fault, I’m going to reach out, check in, and chip away at those unread messages. I’m sorry, I love you, I hope you’re OK.
ED’S BELIEVABILITY RATING: 2/10
Manaal Fatimah, Online Reporter
RESO:
Rediscovering my love for creative writing
There was a time when I used to write just for myself, and I still do, but my resolution for the new year is to get back into writing what feeds my soul. I want to do my best to make time to write more fiction, more stories that make me happy.
ED’S BELIEVABILITY RATING: 7/10
Dinesh Ramanathan, Deputy Editor
RESO: Go on a health kick
To make a better effort to live a healthy lifestyle. It’s common to slip during the festive season, and while I can make excuses to myself, I can’t make any to the scales or to the mirror. So I hope to get back to adopting a cleaner, fitter lifestyle – and not just until Jan 5.
ED’S BELIEVABILITY RATING: 5/10
Madie Murphy, Senior Reporter
RESO: Getting clinical with my cosmetic routines
I never stick to New Year’s resolutions, so don’t hold me accountable. My aim this year is to consistently wash my makeup brushes. I mean, they aren’t growing mould or anything but the bacteria on them can’t be good for my skin. Don’t judge, especially because I know you’re pretending those brushes don’t have 862 layers of foundation on them.

Through MY EYES
THE UAE ACCORDING TO...
Team AngelWolf
Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their favourite places to hidden gems, must-try dishes and local brands they love. This month, we chat to Nick from Team AngelWolf (@teamangelwolf) the inspiring social impact organisation; dedicated to promoting community inclusion. Here he shares some of his favourite spots that you need on your radar.
With the dynamics of our life, it is truly hard to properly switch off, but the best way to do this for us, is to go for a family walk with our dog, Luna. It instantly puts us into a different mindset. So, we often take her for a walk around The Sustainable City, as there are some lovely walks there or we go to the desert with her and explore. Just being in nature helps us to switch off.
We like to find relaxed and friendly places to go as a family, where Rio is comfortable and feels welcomed. And we’re vegan, so need good options for that, too. Some of our favourite hidden gem cafe spots to pop to, are Spill The Beans (at The Sustainable City) and New Earth Cafe (at Al Barari)they are both dog friendly, so can take our dog, Luna, with us, too. @spillthebeancoffee, @newearth.cafe
@oceanichotel
As we race every weekend it’s wonderful when we get to travel to new and different places in UAE. One of our favourite events is the Oceanic Triathlon, at Oceanic Hotel in Khorfakkan. It is a great race, but the bonus is spending some time in Khorfakkan. It is such a stunning part of the UAE with mountains, beaches, dam, historical sites, lots of lovely little hidden restaurants and cafes, and lots of sporting activities - definitely worth a visit.
Head to YouTube and search for the song “Chasing Dreams by Team AngelWolf”. Like the UAE, Team AngelWolf has a strong foundation of family, community, teamwork and togetherness. We wanted to spread a message about community inclusion and thought the best way was through music. This was a two-year project, involving 50 people (with and without disabilities) who shared their expertise and time for free, to create the most beautiful music video with a special message. Our wish is that watching it will help us all and give us a feeling of hope.
Triathlon is our sport; so, we like to find scenic and accessible places to train. We live in The Sustainable City, where there are some stunning facilities. We also like to cycle in Al Qudra, open water swim at Jumeriah beaches and run along the beach tracks. We also train at Wellfit Gym in Meydan, as it’s great for Rio to get a variety of sensory environments.
@thesustainablecity, @wellfit
It can be challenging to find nice restaurants that are accessible, where Rio is embraced, and we all feel relaxed. As a family we love visiting SEVA Table (in Jumeriah 1) for some truly spectacular vegan food. For Rio’s 21st we were in Abu Dhabi and were taken to Cipriani at Yas Island for some amazing Italian food. And then an old favourite, and a real treat, Zuma in DIFC for modern Japanese cuisine.
@sevatable, @ciprianiyasisland, @zumadubai
Well done, you’ve made it to the New Year with only a faint residual hangover holding you back. Now, let the What’s On team kickstart your 2025 with the freshest and most exciting things to do in town

The new big kid activity: SWINGERS
Mini golf isn’t just for kids. The London-famous, high-end golf experience Swingers is finally opening its first Middle East location this winter. Born in the UK, crazy golf is a more adult- and party-friendly version of the fan-favourite game of mini golf. The rules are the same, but fun additions include street food, cocktails, and DJs setting the mood for a good time. Opening soon in Bluewaters, the 22,000-square-foot venue is set to span two levels featuring two creative nine-hole courses with quirky obstacles like windmills and swinging pendulums. There are countless indistinguishable pubs posing as gastropubs, especially in Dubai. But at The Spaniel, nestled unassumingly in Bluewaters, the roast is worth seeking out. This quintessentially British gastropub spans two cosy floors, complete with a roaring fireplace, making it an inviting spot to enjoy the best of British flavours – especially the classic Sunday roast. At the helm is former Marina Social head chef Will Stanyer, who delivers culinary excellence. Generous meat portions shine, from tender lamb shank to perfectly cooked wagyu sirloin. The roast potatoes are golden and crisp on the outside, fluffy within, and the cauliflower cheese is wonderfully rich. The crowning glory? Piping hot, deeply flavorful gravy. A consistent, accomplished roast that hits all the right notes.

The new sports craze: PICKLEBALL
Move over, padel – pickleball is poised to become Dubai’s new favourite sport in 2025. While padel has dominated the city’s courts, pickleball offers a fresh and inclusive alternative that’s simple to pick up and thrilling to play. Combining elements of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton, the game is fast-paced yet accessible. The main differences between padel and pickleball? Padel uses a stringless racket and a tennis-style ball, whereas pickleball players use solid paddles and a perforated plastic ball, making it slower and easier for beginners to track. Unlike padel’s reliance on walls for gameplay, pickleball is all about precision and strategic placement on an open court. Ready to give it a shot? Head to Picklers Indoor Pickleball Club in Dubai, where you can join fun, guided classes starting from Dhs300 or book a court for just Dhs133. Picklers, Al Quoz 1, daily 8am to 11am and 3pm to 11pm. It was the gig that broke the hearts and made the dreams of many UAE residents, with its will-we, won’t-we get tickets saga in September 2024. But those lucky enough to have secured tickets will get to experience Coldplay’s record-breaking Music of the Spheres world tour at Zayed Sports City this January. The four-date tour will see Chris Martin and Co. perform some of their biggest anthems from their catalogue of mega hits, including Yellow, The Scientist, Clocks, Fix You, Viva La Vida, Paradise, A Sky Full Of Stars, and Adventure Of A Lifetime. @livenationme

From 2025, you’ll be able to get your fix of Cantonese fine dining at China Tang, which will debut at The Lana Promenade at Dorchester in Business Bay. It’s a fitting location for the Middle East’s first outpost of China Tang, with the original being housed in the iconic Dorchester Hotel in London. The upscale Cantonese restaurant is inspired by the art-deco era of 1930s Shanghai, and is known and loved for its classic Chinese and Cantonese dishes, as well as its signature Peking Duck, so we can’t wait to check out the menu at the brand’s upcoming Dubai venue.
The world’s tallest hotel will welcome guests in Dubai Ciel Tower, which has been under construction in Dubai Marina for a number of years, will welcome its first guests in 2025. A new hotel in Dubai might not seem that special, but this one is because it’s set to be the world’s tallest hotel. Taking over the record from Dubai’s Gevora Hotel, the 365-metre tower will span over 80 floors and will debut as Ciel, Vignette Collection, part of the Vignette Collection by IHG Hotels and Resorts. Inside, we’ll be able to look forward to drinks with a view from the 81st floor Ciel Observatory and Lounge; and taking a dip in the cool 82nd floor infinity pool. Elsewhere, a luxury spa and the Dubai debut of Manchester-born Tattu restaurant will further enhance facilities. @cieltower

Laughter is the best medicine, that’s what they say, isn’t it? It’s not a universal truth, sometimes antibiotics make more sense, but when it comes to existential ennui or maladies of the mind, stand-up comedy gets to the site of pain, fast. And if you’re in need of some comic relief, the good news is that there’s a whole team of world-class surgical stand-ups due to hit stages across the UAE, throughout 2025.
Al Murray
When: January 20
Murray’s main character – The Pub Landlord – is one of the finest (and longest-running, with 30 years behind the figurative bar and counting) agents of British satire ever created. It’s essentially a vehicle to send up ‘little England’ conservatism, with (remember it’s satire) swipes at casual xenophobia and, ahem, the Germans in particular. He’s in town with his new show, Guv Island which would almost certainly not pass any form of HR screening. Dubai Opera, Jan 20, from Dhs195. dubaiopera.com
Jimmy Carr
When: January 11
Controversial lolsmith Jimmy Carr is coming to Yas Island, Abu Dhabi to chortle away the new year blues. The British comedian will be bringing his Laughs Funny (appropriate for a man whose own laugh sounds like a startled goose) tour to the Etihad Arena this month. In addition to writing books, hosting panel shows and podcasts and doing stand-up, Jimmy is something of a comedy professor, and has somehow managed to formulate a three-word joke: Stationery store moves. Guz Khan
When: January 20
Do you know what is statistically the most depressing day of the year? The third Monday in January, Blue Monday. Joining Al Murray on the Dubai Opera bill is star of stage and screen, BAFTA-nominated Man Like Mobeen – Guz Khan. We just have one question. Does that make Murray Uncle Shady?

When: May 3
Grammy-nominated comedian, podcaster, producer, and unofficially “The Nicest Man in Stand-Up”, Nate Bargatze will be in town for the one-nightonly Middle Eastern leg of his Big, Dumb Eyes tour. REVIEW:
LA CANTINE BEACH
This family-friendly daycation is doing things differently...
With the string of recent openings, you might not think Dubai needs another beach club. But I’m here to make a case that La Cantine Beach is exactly what Dubai needed.
While most newly opened beach clubs favour an adults-only entry policy, boholuxe aesthetic, and an entertainment programme of thumping beats and rotating dancers, La Cantine Beach – sandwiched between Banyan Tree and Delano on Bluewaters – has gone for the entirely opposite approach.
The split-level beach club has tapped in to Dubai’s wellness side, and features a baby blue pickleball court near the entrance, then down on the beach, a volleyball net and wooden workout deck stacked with weights give this Dubai beach club a sporty edge. There’s a duo of swimming pools to enjoy: a family-friendly one is immediately identifiable thanks to a teal car re-imagined into an ice-cream and sweets cart, where the friendly team assist little ones with treats throughout the afternoon. The second pool is for adults only, and sits pretty in front of the
French-Mediterranean restaurant. Both are lined with plush loungers in blue and white, landscaped with verdant plants and swaying palms to make you feel like your worlds away from Dubai.
Even though it’s a large space, the attention to detail is evident everywhere, and vintage posters, painted surf boards and deck chairs dotted around give La Cantine Beach Instagrammable touches that are welcome and subtle. Even the uniforms –hostesses dressed in smart tennis whites – add to the sporty and chic aesthetic.
In keeping with the vibe, chilled house beats play at a soft but audible level, adding to the atmosphere but not overpowering the ambience. You won’t find sparklers and shot shows here, instead, guests can look forward to a programme that will feature ice baths and workouts, where afterwards you can fuel up with the extensive array of fresh juices, smoothies and protein shakes on offer. On the food front, there’s some overlap between the restaurant menu and the pool and beach menu, but there’s also some more poolside-friendly dishes designed for grazing from your lounger.
We order a Greek salad (Dhs78), and it’s a generous bowl of tomatoes, cucumbers and onion topped with a slab of feta that we crumble into the salad. A rich and flavourful burrata (Dhs86) is also tasty and a generous size, given a fruity twist with the addition of some red grapes. The fried calamari (Dhs60) has the perfect amount of crispy crunch, and we dunk each piece into the spicy mayo, which surprises us with the spice level, but it’s not unwelcome. If you’re going to try anything, let it be the prettily plated king crab (Dhs245) where cubes of avocado are layered with pieces of king crab and laced with lemon compote –it’s zesty and refreshing and hits all the right notes.
With a 15-month-old in tow, we’re frequently dipping in and out of the pool, and the team make excellent work of judging when to bring dishes, when to top up water, and when to bring over a creamy vanilla ice cream (Dhs22). And while families are able to enjoy La Cantine Beach, so are those without children, and as we pass the adults-only pool and the restaurant, we see that they’re also packed with a crowd enjoying a day in the sun.
Delano Dubai, Bluewaters, daily 10am to sunset pool, 10am to 12am restaurant, pool rates Dhs200 weekdays, Dhs250 weekends, nonredeemable.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT
This unique beach club is bringing something new to the city, and it’s got something for everyone.
REVIEW: SEXY FISH
It was highly anticipated for a reason...
Does Sexy Fish really need an introduction? I don’t think so but I’ll give you one anyway. Sexy Fish originally opened in London in 2015, and Dubai is the fourth city where it has popped up, along with Manchester and Miami. It has been a celeb magnet for years, with past guests including Johnny Depp, Kate Moss and Kendall Jenner. With clientele like that, we had high expectations, and it didn’t disappoint.
After arriving at the new Innovation One building in DIFC, we were greeted by smartly dressed security and friendly hostesses. From when you first step into the building, you’re greeted with a colourful mirrored ocean scene around the reception area, which includes a wall mural with a jaw-dropping two million pieces of hand-painted coral. Plus an eyecatching octopus sculpture hangs over the desk, created by the legendary Damien Hirst.
The first thing that really caught my attention as we walked into the restaurant was the floor, as peculiar as that sounds. Those who have already been to Sexy Fish will understand, the floor mimics that of a sea bed with under lights so it glows as you walk over it. Between that, the
columns wrapped with hand-blown Murano glass throughout the restaurant, the bronze mermaids, and the hanging fish-shaped lights, the decor is by far the most incredible I have ever seen. The wrap around terrace has a stunning view of the city’s skyline including the glistening Burj Khalifa.
We started off the food order with a milk bun and ocean butter, crispy pink shrimp with yuzu mayo (Dhs98), salmon tartare (Dhs87), followed by spicy beef tenderloin, and caramelised black cod (Dhs243). Each dish was delicious but also elegantly styled. The serving of dessert was probably the most exquisite, we ordered the cinnamon donuts and they arrived individually perched on octopus tentacles.
I was particularly interested in the selection of cocktails which they do differently at Sexy Fish. Named unity cocktails, “a cocktail list of equitability, led
by flavours, inclusive for all”. The premise is that you choose your flavour on the menu, such as strawberry, pineapple, or honey and then decide on the ABV.
Lastly, we need to talk about the bathrooms... Now I can only speak for the women’s, and it’s strange that a bathroom could be my favourite place in a restaurant, but here we are. Again, you’ll have to go there to truly appreciate the details, the wow-factor but for those who want a teaser, think a ceiling covered in flowers, a glowing tiled floor, three huge marble clam sinks.
Even the taps have starfish knobs to turn as you wash your hands. You’ll feel like a glamorous mermaid while topping up your makeup, minus the tail.
Innovation One, DIFC, open 5pm to 2am Mon to Sun.
Tel: (0)4 381 9000.

Pick n Icks
Dubai dining trends we want to see more (or less) of in 2025
It’s a matter
of taste
If you live in Dubai for any length of time, you learn to expect the unexpected. It’s a city that frequently finds itself at the serrated edge of exciting new trends, and nowhere is it more visible than with dining fads. These are just a few trends we’d pick to see more of, and those we get the ick from, in 2025.
PICK:
Not sharing
There’s a place for sharing concepts, and that place is not ‘everywhere, all the time’. So it’s with great nest-feathering zeal that I’ve been noticing more restaurants brave enough to let you order mains that don’t arrive at the table all carved up and easily divisible between people who are less adept at making good food choices as you. If we’re going for mezze or tapas, what’s mine is yours, if we’ve ordered a burger and you go in for an unsolicited bite, the rules of the jungle (and/or prison, which we’ll gladly spend time in if it means lessons are learned) apply.
PICK: Merch
NFTs might be primed for a comeback, but it’s IRL merch that tickles my graphic fanny pack. I’m a sucker for a good bit of prêt-àporter branding. Snapbacks with the detailed stitching, baggy printed tees, to a lesser extent but still valid –boots with the fur, logo stickers for laptops, visors, mugs, shades, water bottles, stationery, socks and boatloads of totes. The restaurant x fashion fit era is here and I am more than happy to do a bit of free human billboarding if I believe in the business, and the people behind it. Let the brands cook.
ICK: Being taken on “a culinary journey”
I understand what you’re attempting to get at, I know there is no literal journey (other than the one we’re all taking on a spinning rock, that’s orbiting the sun at 67,000 mph, itself careening through the expanding universe into an only theoretically comprehendible void). But even on a metaphorical level, the use of the word ‘journey’ is deeply flawed. Thanks to a fevered campaign of overuse as shorthand for experience – the phrase has lost all meaning. At best it evokes nothing, at worst it awakens an instinctual stubbornness against travelling anywhere, especially via the medium of burrata.
ICK: Hot honey
I can hear you shouting at the screen and I don’t care. I’ve seen what some of you do with ketchup. Hot honey is having a moment in Dubai right now –and its primary deployment seems to be in generous dribbles over pizza. Likely by the same people that consider cereal an acceptable dinner food, using it as a proxy because they were pineappleshamed out of ordering a Hawaiian. Judging from the straw poll in the office, my position seems to be an unpopular one, but I still cannot get my head around literally sugarcoating one of Italy’s greatest gifts to mankind, essentially transformed into a mildly spicy flan.
PICK: Smoke
Coinciding with the repopularising of meat – is the renaissance of the charcoal, or wood-burning grill. The embers of this trend, kept alive by barbecue restaurants and smokehouses, were given new life with the rise of the robata in UAE kitchens, but the heatmap is spreading with an increasing count of kitchens opting for preparations that take advantage of this deeply perfumed cooking method. It’s not without its challenges, but what it loses in smoke alarm batteries, it more than makes up for in flavour. And where there’s smoke, there’s cooking fire.
ICK: Caviar on everything
The pricing mechanics of caviar seem to borrow heavily from the ‘emperor’s new clothes’ market economy of the modern art world. Be honest, how many people would really pass a blindfolded guess-thepremium-salty-sturgeon-egg taste test? And their gimmicky addition to pretty much any foodstuff just feels like an unpalatable form of wealth-signaling. What more can you say by spilling half a Bitcoin’s worth of fish mist on your lap that you haven’t already said with the Submariner and loud complaints about how many speed bumps you had to take the Lambo over to get there. It’s a no to the superfluous roe from me.
PICK: Spanish restaurants
In the debates that matter, we humans instinctively seem to reduce ourselves to binary outcomes. The political left or right, Messi or Ronaldo, French or Italian cuisine – but in that narrow search for the GOAT, we rob ourselves of the poetry in depth. We miss out on treasures like the footwork of Pele or the sizable library of Spanish culinary flare –of tapas and deep sea carabineros, sangria, paella, jamon Iberico and croquetas. Highlights of the castinet revolution for me have been Jose by Pizarro (Abu Dhabi), Tagomago, La Niña and Jaleo.
ICK: Twists
It’s a Mediterranean restaurant serving Mediterranean food but wait... there’s a twist. Except it isn’t a twist because there are hundreds of other restaurants doing the same thing. For it to be classed as a twist, you have to conjure something unexpected, play with our preconceptions and deliver an edible mic drop. Putting maki and tuna tataki on an otherwise mostly European menu does not make you M. Night Shyamalan, it means your eatery serves ‘a Dubai menu’. Which is absolutely fine, and in no way improved by claiming a plot-based bait and switch.
PICK: Steakhouse burgers
The smash burger will never die, it’s a fashion-proof archetype – like Ford Mustangs, 501 jeans, and the music of Blink 182. But its omnipresence in Dubai’s gourmet burger joints has been at the expense of its thicker, juicer aunt patty. You heard it here first, steakhouse burgers are back in this season.
ICK: Soulless collaborations
I’m not against collabs in principle. There have been some amazing joint ventures over the past few years (What’s On x Pitfire, and Ravi x Adidas are just two that stand out immediately) –but when they’re just a transparent, selfaggrandising cash grab with no material worth, allegorical Glaswegian Wonka pop-ups, X marks the spot where creativity sleeps and it’s a la poubelle for me.
PICK: Bagels
Hot on the trail of sandwiches – bread with a hole, is wholly primed for a doughnaissance. Glazed, seeded and rye, we’ve noticed both an increase in the number of eateries and delis serving them, as well as an upscaling in the average girth of those hitting shelves. Salmon and cream cheese the classic filling, but we’ve seen riffs on a Reuben, little pesto and avocado numbers, bresaola and provolone – hit up 1762 for some of the best halo bakes in the city right now.
ICK: Obnoxious music volume
Maybe it’s an age thing. Ok, it’s almost definitely partly an age thing – but if I’m going out for food with friends, the background volume of the playlist/mariachi band/saxophonist needs to sit below the threshold where you’re required to WhatsApp other members of the table just to communicate. I’m not willing to believe that dystopia is our reality just yet. Willfully ignore your Apple Watch ‘loud environment notifications’ and crank up the decibels in latenight bars, clubs and beach raves, I’m on board and signed up to that – but there’s absolutely no need for a taco restaurant to serve cold sweat Berghain flashbacks at 7pm on a Tuesday.
PICK: Allergy awareness
You know what’s hot? Restaurants that care enough about their customers to hold themselves accountable for food allergies. It’s estimated, worldwide, the number of people with a food allergy now sits at around seven per cent of the total population. And, for whatever reason, that number is growing. There are many restaurants here that are onboard the allergen woke ship (which also seems to be on an upward trend), but there are still many more that aren’t. I’d make a generous estimate, that it’s about 50/50, which are fair odds for a coin flip, slightly less so for a round of ‘will I have a functioning trachea after this meal?’ What’s required is education – training staff to be aware of the severity of these conditions; and how to avoid crosscontamination in the kitchen; with a legislative backing that compels restaurants to comply. There are already strict guidelines on food hygiene and ensuring food prep meets halal standards and practices. We’re just talking about topping that up. It will likely save lives.
ICK: Misleading bathroom signs
Misgendering but make it Dubai. Sure those elaborate line drawings on the restroom door look beautiful but which out of the two amorphous scribbles directs me to porcelain sans shocked screaming. What are those designs? Is that a dress? A beard? Are those arms? Surely this can’t be a toilet intended for the sole use of marine invertebrates? Why are we being provided with clues for a treasure hunt, rather than actionable information – you shouldn’t need a doctorate in archaic symbology to be able to legally relieve yourself. What’s wrong with using good old fashioned words? Give them quirky themes if you must, but the bare operational minimum should be, that they’re easy enough to discern during two seconds of mild panic.
PICK: Elevated shawarma
Swanky shawarma will be the next big thing, mark my words. Just remember that it began with Mitzumami. The brand comes from the same team as gourmet burger scene pioneers, High Joint. Its prime cut directive is delivering an upgraded version of the regional love language – shawarma. Their signature offering combines prime beef and lamb, is woodfire grilled to a medium-rare finish, has craft pickles and dollops of ritzed-up tahini slapped over the pita-hugged mélange. I can borderline guarantee this concept will be copied, pasted, and imitated (but never replicated) ad absurdium.
ICK: Dropping the vowels
Last year we watched the vowel-dropping fad become an epidemic. New brands left, right and cntr with deliberately annexed As, Es, Is, Os, and Us. Why? To seem aloof perhaps, coquettish or unashamedly brazen. Covering themselves, they hope, in a little of that energy people named Marc “with a c” have been enjoying for years. The problem is that it’s now being co-opted with such ferocious frequency, the novelty has run dry. It’s gone the way of lowercase insistence and superfluous punctuation marks. And if we follow this trend to its logical conclusion, where will it end? Random letter removal? Just straight up crosswords clues in place of names? Hangry Countdown is not a game you want to play.

SALT IN THE CITY
In a galaxy really not that far away…
We know, you know, everyone knows. We all love Salt and when winter comes around, it means Salt Camp is not far. The fifth edition of the beloved foodie and fun pop-up is open for the season and as always, they have an exclusive theme and an exciting inspired menu. The theme for this year is ‘Full of Stars’ and will take campers on an unforgettable journey beneath the Milky Way, through the stars and beyond the galaxies. Think a glittering myriad of all things stars and skies paired with a delicious menu of Salt classics.
With activities, performances and live grilling stations, it’s the complete pop-up experience.
BITES
This year as well, you’ll find it in the usual spot, by the foot of the Emirates Towers and the Museum of the Future. The entrance is hard to miss, a massive disco ball lighting up the street with a kaleidoscope of stars. Winter is all about the great outdoors, and there is nothing better than Salt Camp to enjoy the season.
Salt is all about burgers. There’s something for everyone, with beef and chicken options, and sides to go with. Besides the burgers, there are also steak sandwiches and other handhelds, and some insane desserts to round it off. Our recommendation – order a burger or sandwich of your choice, a side of the mac and cheese, a heavenly, Instagrammable cheese pull and the cinnacookie to finish with. As you chow down, you can look to the skies, to the towers or to the stage, where live performances will keep you entertained.
BITS
Besides the food, the fun of Salt Camp comes from the activations, different every year to play on the theme. This year,
you can get a starry manicure at one of the nail stations outside of the tent or a galaxy-themed eye makeup look, complete with glitter, stars and whimsical designs you can choose from. There is also a glow room, a place to keep the little ones busy with glow-in-the-dark activities like painting and decoration. If you’re coming with children, there’s plenty there to keep them busy, but if you come just with friends, there’s something for you as well.
GETTING THERE
The best way to get there is the metro –the Emirates Towers metro station is connected to the Museum of the Future. You can walk through the footbridge into the museum and exit onto the foot of Emirates Towers. Emirates Towers, daily 12pm to 12am. @findsaltcamp
REVIEW:
STUDIO FRANTZÉN
Björn to be wild...
“Choice overload” is a real thing. Multiple studies by marketing companies have shown that, when confronted with too many options, people panic. It’s the old Aristotelian paradox, having too much of a good thing (freedom of choice). The optimal number of options, in case you were wondering, for a cosmetic-level choice (such as where to eat, or what pair of pants to put on in the morning) is between six and nine.
Given that the number of new F&B openings in Dubai over a particularly frenetic 2024 Q4 is something approaching the star count of the observable universe (permit me a slight exaggeration), restaurant choice overload is painfully real for many. But if it’s an incredible meal you’re after, in a new and exciting space, I can save you considerable consternation. Go to Studio Frantzén.
From the culinary stable of Björn Frantzén (who runs a pair of three Michelin Star restaurants, Frantzén in Stockholm and Zén in Singapore), Studio Frantzén occupies the former home of Nobu at Atlantis, The Palm. At the deliberately stark, crimson entrance there’s a giant tattooed bear’s head staking out the reservations desk. Nothing to do with the TV series, the Björn of Björn Frantzen translates from Swedish as ‘bear’. But like the fictional restaurant in FX show, The Bear, there’s a lot on the line – along with the sister concept, FZN (also at Atlantis, The Palm) this team are shooting for the Michelin Stars.
the cuisine – gloriously eccentric, Asian, French, with a soupcon of Scandinavia. It’s very much a bit of Dubai.
If you’re opting for oysters, they charge by the piece. We’ve ordered several of their signature grilled derivations (Dhs55) –with smoked butter, herring caviar and dirty seaweed oil. They’re a terrarium on a half-shell, brimming with synaesthesial relish, Warhol colour splashes you can taste. From now on, I make a note, all of my seaweed oil shall be dirty.
The seabass ceviche (Dhs95) comes in a trenchcoat of root veneers, inside sits a potent mix of ponzu strawberries, myoga and tiger’s milk. It’s one of my favourite dishes of 2024. A violent gang of individuals, that banded together, make sweet citrusy jazz.
Studio Frantzén’s king crab gunkan (Dhs65 per piece) is a clever refrain –sweet, sour and lightly spicy sushi. The excellent Scandinavian sashimi (salmon, lobster, hamachi, scallop, Dhs175) comes with a horseradish emulsion, a sort of Shenghan zone, soft-rock wasabi that’s another addition to the night’s welcome discoveries.
After stepping into the Björn cave you emerge into the umbral dim of a quirky cocktail lounge. It’s a little kitsch, arguably cutesy, and comes with a weighty mixology collection. But we’re here for the food, so into the main dining salon, we push. The eclectic design theme pervades, and looking at the menu, it’s an allegory for
Our main course selections, Black Angus beef ribeye (Dhs395) and a lamb rack (Dhs225), might sound like pure Euro brasserie orthodoxy, but the lamb comes with a sublime umami-enhancing wasabi and mint raita. And the beef, charred and curvy, rolls over the tongue in the velvety fermented kampot pepper cream sauce.
Words: Miles Buckeridge
I have to make a fourth-wall-breaking aside to talk about the sides though. The Brussels sprouts (Dhs50) come dressed in something that feels like an XO or maybe even a miso sauce. I don’t know, and I don’t think it matters, sometimes you just have to strap in and enjoy the ride. Getting all evangelical and misty-eyed about pygmy cabbages was not on my Frantzén bingo card, but here we are. Spectacular. The charred broccolini (Dhs50) with sweet soy, mint and Thai basil was also a poetic piece of fusion.
We pay a visit to the sweet room for afters, where you’re invited to play an actual (man)child in a candy shop. Pick your poison – cakes, bakes or sugarsprinkled penny sweets. I’ve got raging choice overload, so I’m sitting this course out on the bench. But my dining date swears the cheesecake was, and I quote, “truly magnificent”. This is aberrant phraseology from her, vindicating though excitingly unnerving.
Studio Frantzén is brilliant, easily one of the brightest of Dubai’s new crop. Whilst I’m passion-biased to the homegrown, in joining the scene, Studio helps raise it, introducing new and worthy talent onto the Dubai stage. And that’s a very good thing.
Atlantis, The Palm, Palm Jumeirah, daily 6pm to 1am.
@studiofrantzendubai
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
Is Studio Frantzén one of Dubai’s best new restaurants? Does a wild Björn source from a forest?

COMING TO UAE SCREENS IN 2025
It’s going to be a blockbuster year...
Wolf Man
Expected Release Date: January 17
Writer-director Leigh Whannell received just acclaim for his soft reboot of gothic horror feature, The Invisible Man. For his next cinematic trick, he’s taking another classic monochrome monster – the eponymous Wolf Man – and giving it a new set of fangs, fit for the 21st Century. It stars the magnificent Julia ‘if-you-want-to-stop-me’ Garner, and Christopher Abbott, who we’ll be seeing a lot more of in the very near future.
Captain America: Brave New World
Expected Release Date: February 14
He’s back, no cap. We’re now in the Sam Wilson (Anthony ‘Clarence’ Mackie) era of Captain America, after Steve’s emotional Vibranium baton pass at the end of last The Avengers saga. The world is on the precipice of all-out war once again, a situation likely to be hampered by the fact US President-elect (played by Harrison Ford) moonlights as a beetroot-faced, hair-triggered, violently obstinate, smashfetishist. Red Hulk, wait, who did you think we were talking about?
Sinners
Expected Release Date: March 7
Black Panther and Creed director Ryan Coogler places his celluloid muse, Micheal B. Jordan, in a period American horror piece against an unspecified – but pretty harrowing if the trailer is anything to go by (which it absolutely, necessarily is) –evil. Jordan plays twin brothers trying to make peace with their troubled past by returning to their hometown. But as the VO explains in the trailer, “If you keep dancing with the devil, he’s going to follow you home”.
Disney’s Snow White
Expected Release Date: March 21
4
Mirror mirror on the wall, what’s the riskiest Disney live-action remake of them all? Doing a film about dwarfs in 2025 maybe? Still, the makers of Snow White must have been surprised to see the extent to which the controversy blizzard has raged around creative decisions, and certain cast member comments in the past year. Despite the internet outrage (which now seems to be an integral part of the House of Mouse publicity cycle) I hope it doesn’t put cinema-goers off seeing what I’ve been led to believe is a more female-forward reimaging of the 1937 classic. A reboot that stars West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler as Snow White, and is directed by The Amazing SpiderMan helmsman Marc Webb. Seriously, Webb.
Alto Knights
Expected Release Date: March 21
5
2025 really must be the dawning of the Age of Gemini, or split personality disorder (same same), because this is the second film on the list where the lead actor plays two roles. And it’s only March. This time around it’s double Oscar-winner, Robert De Niro in a movie where he plays both antagonists in the narrativisation of the reallife mob war between Italian American crime bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello.
A Minecraft Movie (2025)
Expected Release Date: April 4
Skibidi your rizzlers, and fanum tax your Ohios (I’m pretty sure that’s correct terminology usage) because the cultural keystone of Gen Alpha, Minecraft, is getting a big-screen live-action adaptation. I know what you’re thinking, that game has no storyline and the graphics are blocky. But if you can build a successful franchise from the blank cheque narrative world of LEGO, anything is possible. This film stars Jack Black as craft table kingpin Steve, Jason Momoa, Jennifer ‘Stiffler’s mom’ Coolidge, and Matt Berry, with a plot synopsis that sounds eerily like a Jumanji homage.
6
Lilo & Stitch
Expected Release Date: May 23
Mission: Impossible -The Final Reckoning
Expected Release Date: May 23
The final mission. Probably. It’s not clear. But the smart money is on this likely be the last time this particular IMF squad gets wheeled out to face seemingly insurmountable odds, only to surmount them. Once more unto the rubber masks my friends. We know the formula now – twists, epic stunts, apocalyptic peril, characters you think are dead turning up unannounced, betrayal, gadgets, AI and Tom Cruise running along a landmark he shouldn’t be running on. We can’t wait. However that appears to be our mission, so we’ll have to accept it.
Elio

Karate Kid: Legends
Expected Release Date: May 30
9
Disney’s next (mostly) live-action remake, is a Hawaiian tale of ohana (family). It’s about looking past the faults of those dear to us, of not always having to fit in with societal norms, and the dire consequences of a lab-engineered weapons-grade space koala discovering Elvis Presley, the ukulele and coconut cake. This remake sees original cast members Chris Sanders (Stitch), Tia Carrere (Mrs. Kekoa), Amy Hill (Tūtū), and Jason Scott Lee (David) reprising their roles, alongside some exciting new additions, including Zach Galifianakis.
Netflix hit, Kobra Kai has seemingly re-stoked the public’s appetite for the sweep-the-leg-verse. This, the sixth film in the franchise, takes place in the same universe as the original trilogy, the 2010 remake and the Kobra Kai series. A timeline that even on paper gives me eye-twitch migraines. Mr Han (Jackie Chan) and Daniel ‘San’ LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) must find a way to wax on and wax off in harmony, so that their young prodigy, Li Fong (Ben Wang) can – and I’m just working off past material here –either restore slighted honour, or batter a band of bullies.
Expected Release Date: June 13
After travelling to the innermost depths of the soul in the last few movies, the next Pixar film concentrates on outer space. Elio (which is derived from the Latin and Ancient Greek words for ‘sun’ if you’re a fan of prematurely jumping to conclusions) is a young boy possessed by contemplation of the ethereal mysteries of the universe. It’s perhaps his curiosity in these matters that leads him to being identified as the official head of state for earth and invited to attend an intergalactic parliament of space oddities. Voice acting comes from a cast that includes Yonas Kibreab, Jameela Jamil, Brad Garrett and Zoe Saldaña.
How to Train Your Dragon
Expected Release Date: June 13
Not content with sitting on the sidelines and watching Disney have all the live-action remake fun, DreamWorks have opened their own account with the ballard of Hiccup and Toothless, How to Train Your Dragon. And yes, that means in all likelihood there probably will be a Shrek remake, that will either galvanise or pulverise our collective cherished memories. The location shoot of the first instalment of this Vikings vs Dragons saga wrapped, in Belfast in May and the great news is Gerad Butler, has retained his role as village chief, Stoick the Vast.
28 Years Later
Expected Release Date: June 20
The next chapter in the zombie chronicles of Alex Garland (writer) and Danny Boyle (director) is 28 Years Later. This end-of-days bleakquel (because, perhaps more than any other cinematic dystopia, the 28 franchise just oozes apocalyptic melancholy), was shot entirely on iPhone to really hammer home POV reliability. The “I definitely didn’t get bitten” action here is chaired by actors Aaron TaylorJohnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O’Connell.
F1
Expected Release Date: June 27
Before he gets to work on Top Gun 3, Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is gearing up for the release of F1. The film stars Brad Pitt as a retired Formula One driver (spotted filming in racing fatigues at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix), who’s lured back into the sport to coach a promising young motorist (Damson Idris). Expect drama on and off the track with appearances from a grid of real-world F1 drivers including Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly.
Jurassic World Rebirth
Expected Release Date: July 2
Next on the summer blockbuster blockchain, is the seventh instalment in the Jurassic Park collection of movies. This iteration was directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla (2014), Rogue One and The Creator), and stars Scarlett Johanson and Mahershala Ali. It’s set several years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, and involves a team heading to an island (uh oh), to secure genetic material (here we go again), from several giant murder lizards (RIP). But what they find there, is even more disturbing than discovering a velociraptor in your pantry.
14
Superman
Expected Release Date: July 11
This is it. The temperature check. Just how good will James Gunn’s DCU actually be? Based on his previous work, and looking at the individual ingredients (including David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman), I’m going to stick my head above the predictive parapet and venture this: Superman has within it the makings of one of the greatest superhero movies of all time. The only potential Kryptonite I could envisage, is Gunn’s favoured humour-heavy dialogue approach, jarring with how the son of Jor-El has traditionally been framed. Fun bit of trivia for you: Nicholas Hoult who plays Lex Luthor, auditioned for the DCU versions of both Superman and Batman. If at first you don’t succeed, watch the world burn.
The Naked Gun
Expected Release Date:
August 1
Did you know there’s a Naked Gun sequel in the works starring Liam Neeson as the lead (and on-screen son of Leslie Nielsen’s Detective Frank Drubin)? Looks like the cows have finally come home to roost. This next-gen Naked Gun will be directed by Akiva ‘Hot Rod’ Schaffer, and features writing credits for Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane.
Michael
Expected Release Date: October 3
If you were thinking it was just a matter of time before Michael Jackson got a posthumous biopic, You Are Not Alone. It comes to us directed by Antoine Fuqua of The Equalizer Trilogy and stars Micheal’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson (son of Jermaine). Nepo-baby casting... you can’t Beat It for authenticity. The film covers a long stretch of the King of Pop’s life, from his childhood Jackson 5 days right up until his death. Whatever your opinion on Michael, good or Bad, this film will be Moonwalking into theatres this October, and has the potential to be an edge-of-the-seat, musical Thriller
Avatar: Fire and Ash
Expected Release Date: December 19
Wicked: For Good
Expected Release Date: November 21
It appears there really is no rest for the Wicked cast, because they’re chasing down a sequel release date precisely one year after the first instalment. In truth though, the movie – which is essentially the stage musical’s second act –was shot alongside the original, and it’s Jon M. Chu and the post-production team that won’t be getting any rest. Love spoilers? Can’t wait for the concluding chapter of cinema’s most melodic ‘villain’ origin story? The Wicked stage show is still running on Broadway and the West End.
The third (in what will likely be a five-or-more-part series) outing for the Smurf-Pocahontas sci-fi mash-up sees a lot of the surviving cast members returning (most notably Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña). These movies are works of art and really have to be watched on the largest available cinema screens for maximum effect. Director James Cameron hasn’t shared much detail about the plot, other than Fire and Ash will explore populations within the Na’avi Pandora diaspora that aren’t so necessarily good-willed or are at least a little more complicated in their cultural morality. He’s also stated that there are some big upcoming twists to the story, and an exponential growth in the richness of characters and worlds as the series progresses. Fair warning: the release date has already been moved nine times, so maybe don’t get too attached to the 2025 time frame.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:
Abdulla Lutfi
The illustrious Emirati illustrator
He may be a young artist, but he’s already racked up quite the portfolio of creative achievements. He worked with popular marketplace noon in 2024 to create a cool illustration clad delivery bag (one piece of packaging that we’ve made sure to hold onto). His art is displayed on a 46-metre-long wall between Concourses B and C at DXB Terminal 3; his work also graced the cover of the Emirates’ inflight entertainment (IFE) guide; and he collaborated with popular street artist, Maddy Butcher to create a mural at Kite Beach for Converse. He’s also had his work displayed at the major art festivals in Dubai including World Art Dubai and Sikka Art and Design Festival.
Abdulla Lutfi, or, A.L. as he prefers to be called, is a 31-yearold artist on the autism spectrum. But that hasn’t hampered his creativity or success.
Quite the contrary, A.L. considers himself an ambassador for People of Determination and is on a mission to enable special needs artists to find and share their own unique style, “so they too can be seen, heard, loved and accepted in the same manner that he has.”
As of January 2, 2025, A.L. closed a solo exhibition, Luffy x Lufti: Emirati Manga at Mestaria Gallery at Alserkal Avenue. The exhibition showcased a blend of cultures, pieces inspired by Japanese cartoon styles and contextualised by UAE culture. A number of his black and white canvases dotted the walls, showcasing Emirati men and women with anime like features. Some frames seem as if they’re page stripped right from a comic book, while other examples feature a single scene with large speech bubbles with relatable quotes, drawing warm smiles from gallery visitors.
Often cartoonish in theme and aesthetic, with striking monochrome lines his illustrations are rich with warmth and empathy. You’ll often find humour, as well as humanity, in A.L. originals reflecting his upbeat personality. He feels that his small canvases with funny writing and honest quotes are what people like most about his work.
THE EXHIBITION SHOWCASED A BLEND OF CULTURES, PIECES INSPIRED BY JAPANESE CARTOON STYLES AND CONTEXTUALISED BY UAE CULTURE.
One of our personal favourites… An Emirati riding on a camel (also adorning a ghutra) in the desert with the caption ‘Habibi Come to Dubai!!!’ They may look like prints, but his art is all hand drawn. For some pieces he sketches digitally, using a stylus pen on a computer screen. And it’s always in black and white. They animate the stories of Emirati life and frequently feature iconic UAE including the Burj Khalifa, Museum of the Future, Sheikh Zayed Mosque and the Dubai Frame. And it’s this signature A.L. style that makes his work so instantly recognisable.
His love for drawing began in the seventh grade. To broaden his talent, he later joined Mawaheb, an art studio for adults with special needs. Here he met his mentor Gulshan Kavarana who helped him reach his true potential. She was the one who asked him to draw a caricature of an Emirati man and woman – an element that became a staple theme in his drawings. In an interview with Dubai One, his art mentor Kavarana says that despite having studied art for a long time, she is now the one learning from Abdulla Lufti.
When it comes to fans of his work, it appears we’re all in good company, as A.L. tells us proudly of the time he met HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, who purchased a number of his artworks.
In between hosting exhibitions and collaborations and rubbing shoulders with royalty, A.L. creates his art in a studio at The Next Chapter in Al Fahidi District 10. Here, he also teaches children to sketch out their own masterpieces. “They love being taught by me” he tells us, smiling “they listen very well’’.
What does an artist do to relax in Dubai? A.L. tells us he meets up with cousins over the weekend and drives his 4x4 truck to the desert, playing video games and watching funny videos.
A.L. is already thinking about his next exhibition and while no solid plans are in place yet, we are sure he will be ready to display his work in the near future. You can stay up to date with the artist on his social channels, @abdullalutfi
If you want to hang one of his creations in your own home, you can visit his art studio The Next Chapter in Al Fahidi District. You can also purchase an NFT of his work, which is available on his website, abdullalutfi.com

SA spotlight on Storytelling
THE MULTIFACETED ART OF NARRATIVE
torytelling is about connection. It helps us better understand ourselves, and experience the world from a perspective other than our own. They can be magic things, these stories.
This January, storytelling comes to life in Dubai through two hugely popular festivals. One of film, one of words, but both with arcs that demand exploration.
Emirates Airline Festival of Literature
A new chapter of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature is just a page away. Beginning January 29, the festival will be held under the theme The Art of Storytelling for 2025 and as always will draw in some of the world’s finest scribes.
For six-days, bibliophiles will flock to the InterContinental Dubai Festival City where they will get to hear from and even meet their favourite authors.
This year’s top names include Abraham Verghese – author of The Covenant of Water, Cutting for Stone, and The Tennis Partner; Nobel Prize laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah; Emmy Award-winning journalist Hala Gorani; Jeff Kinney – the author and illustrator of the wildly popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and Daniel Handler aka
Lemony Snicket – creator of A Series of UnfortunateEvents.
The event kicks off with the return of the popular Desert Stanzas at Caravanserai where participants can mingle with international and local authors and poets under the stars as the festival celebrates the written word.
You can sign up for the author talks, panels, cultural events, workshops on emirateslitfest.com. Don’t wait too long, as seats sell out especially for popular authors.
And of course, what’s a festival dedicated to reading if there aren’t books for sale? You can add to your bookshelf to your heart’s content at a discounted rate. Emirates Literature Festival 2025, InterContinental Dubai Festival City and other locations in Dubai, Jan 29 to Feb 3, 2025. emirateslitfest.com
For readers who prefer a different storytelling medium, the Al Marmoom: Film in the Desert returns for a fourth edition to the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve.
Running from January 4 to 12, 2025, the festival will be held under the theme “Where Stories Come to Life” and will feature a rich programme of activities and quality shows aimed at enhancing the sustainability of the film industry in the region.
Film buffs can watch films, live performances, attend panel discussions, partake in workshops, and enjoy immersive public art experiences –inspired by the history of local cinema. There’s even a dedicated space for families. The film festival layout draws inspiration from the iconic Ghaf tree – a symbol of resilience and heritage in the UAE. The ‘fruits’ spotlight emerging talents through vibrant murals, digital art, projections, and traditional patterns, fostering a dynamic and enriching experience for all audiences.
Entry to the festival is free. Just bring a jacket to stay warm and get ready for nights of cinematic storytelling under the stars.

THE IT QUOZ-TIENT…
Quoz Arts Fest is coming back to town –here’s why you need to go
One of the city’s most beloved celebrations of art and culture is coming back for another electrifying season. Quoz Arts Fest is all about spotlighting the very best art in the region, and the programme this year reflects just that with creativity, community and belonging being the primary themes.
Set to run from Saturday and Sunday, January 25 and 26, 2025, the festival, in its 12th edition, has a host of public art installations, exhibitions, live performances, workshops, conversations, creative pop-ups and a dedicated kids’ programme – a little something for everyone.
The central hub for all the action is Alserkal Avenue and rightly so – it’s one of the most vibrant cultural districts of the city. The festival will also expand into the wider Quoz Creative Zone and is slated to showcase the best regional and international talent housed in these lanes.
The highlights...
A standout highlight of the festival is Forest Dancer and the Path to Pure
Creation by Australia’s ENESS at Concrete. This immersive installation blends light, sound, and movement to create a space that emulates the feeling of stepping into unhindered creative flow.
On another corner, Emirati artist Lamya Gargash presents her large-scale commission—the enlarged photograph, A Corridor of Books. Gargash is known for her exploration of identity through both lived and abandoned spaces and turns to the private library of a prominent collector and patron of the arts in the UAE. The centre of the picture is a golden fabric draped through his library, guided by the Qibla – a compass pointing towards prayer.
In the headliners, Syrian rapper, poet, and storyteller Omar Offendum will be
showcasing stories of immigration, Tunisian singer and songwriter Emel Mathlouthi, renowned for her soaring voice and fusion of traditional Arabic music with contemporary influences, will be performing, and London-based Indian musician Sarathy Korwar will collaborate with poet and writer Zia Ahmed to explore spoken word poetry with contemporary compositions.
There will also be loads of in-house gallery exhibitions across the avenue, Stage 2.0 with emerging UAE-based artists and talent making their debut, alongside afikra conversations with artists, the Reel Palestine Film Festival at Cinema Akil and a dedicated Kids Lane offering interactive art workshops, reading sessions, and community activations led by Artful Minds, Wisdom Warehouse, The Junction, thejamjar, and The Happy Studio.
In terms of food and dining, the culinary experiences will be curated by What The Food by Alserkal, featuring the city’s most loved chefs, artisanal producers, and food entrepreneurs. What The Food brings together the most exciting culinary prospects of the city for the community to samplechampion chefs, homegrown concepts, Dubai food and Dubai people. @quozartsfest

This year the 36th edition of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic will be taking place at Emirates Golf Club between January 16 and 19. It is the longestrunning golf event in the, ahem, Gulf and one of the best-loved events in the whole of Dubai’s tightly packed sporting calendar.
HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO
A scoresheet of the 2025 edition of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, returning this month
MEETING YOUR HEROES
They say you should never meet your heroes, but at the Desert Classic that’s one of the key elements to the allure. The tournament attracts the world’s finest golfers, and provides opportunities to get within putting distance of them as they navigate the rolling fairways of Emirates Golf Club. Players like Rory McIlroy who is returning to the course to defend his Hero Dubai Desert Classic title in 2025, if he wins, it’ll be his third successive victory and fifth throughout his career.
He’ll be joined by European Ryder Cup star Tommy Fleetwood and double Major champion Jon Rahm, who will be making
his tournament debut. Additionally, the field will include notable players such as Akshay Bhatia, Tyrrell Hatton, Adam Scott, and Robert MacIntyre – all chasing the iconic Dallah Trophy.
WATERING HOLES
But it’s not just the golf that makes this long weekend such a firm and perennial favourite with residents and overseas fans. Tournament Town, the event’s lively leisure village will return for 2025 and it’s promising to be bigger and better than ever.
Tournament Town sets up a bustling, fun, free, alfresco entertainment space for the whole family, with live music and exhilarating performances throughout. There are skills challenges, roaming circus acts, magicians, a kids’ disco, caricature artists and a dizzying range of localfavourite F&B (including Vietnamese Foodies and Salt). Plus there are big screens throughout the fan village, so you won’t have to miss a single chip, thwack, putt, bogey or speculative piece of approach play from the on-course action.
Basic entry is free, though you will have to sign up in advance to secure those tickets (and they move pretty quickly). You can grab yours at dubaidesertclassic.com
FAMILYBEATZ
Family Friday is always a brilliant way to ease into the weekend, and all ages are invited for a fun-filled day on the gloriously sun-soaked greens. This year will be particularly special as the tournament introduces FamilyBeatz on Friday January 17, a unique family-friendly rave taking over Emirates Golf Club from 3pm to 6pm. Promising all the best bits from an old school night out - a live DJ, entertainment, and a dancefloor to get your groove on – but safe and inclusive for all ages, it’s one families won’t want to miss.
ABOVE PAR HOSPITALITY
But if you fancy doing the golf in a slightly more, ahem, fancy way – there’s an outstanding earlybird deal on a very special hospitality package.
The Social on Sixteen is a premium ticket that includes four hours (midday to 4pm) of free-flow beverages, and a choice of premium casual dining options. Overlooking the iconic 16th green, your privileged vantage point comes complete with relaxed deck and garden seating. The price for all of this, just Dhs695.
We’re not sure who needs to hear this but, *hint hint* this would – completely hypothetically – make a great early Father’s or Mother’s Day gift, birthday present or a ‘just because I love you’ gesture.
There are other hospitality packages too, including options that give you access to the famous Dallah rooftop lounge with 360º views over the action with premium food and beverages available throughout the day. Prices start at Dhs2,000 per day. Hero Dubai Desert Classic, Emirates Golf Club, January 16 to 19. dubaidesertclassic.com

STAYCATION SPOTLIGHT:
Delano Dubai
It was a celeb-adored icon on Miami’s social scene. But what can Delano bring to Bluewaters?
LOCATION
Tucked away in the far corner of Bluewaters, you’ll drive past the Banyan Tree, then La Cantine Beach Club to get to Delano. It unrolls along the beach on one side, with the looming facade of Ain Dubai on the other.
LOOK AND FEEL
It’s all rather understated and sophisticated – a bright and breezy reception is adorned in neutral hues, flooded with natural light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows that run down the length of the sumptuous space. Billowing white drapes, a Delano signature, are found in the corridors, at the valet, and in guest rooms, a reminder of the stories laced through the walls of this historic brand. At the heart of the resort, the pool sits pretty in the centre, flanked by palm trees and sun loungers laid with canary yellow towels.
FOOD AND DRINK
Tutto Passa is the main restaurant, serving a concise continental buffet and then a more detailed a la carte menu for breakfast. Order eggs half a dozen ways, or one of the sweet options like fluffy pancakes with an airy whipped cream if you’re after something more indulgent. For dinner,
Italian flavours take centre stage, and it’s a wonderful menu that focuses on the coastal classics – think iced bowls of oysters with a zesty vinaigrette, and a long bowl of lobster pasta for two, where the ribbons of linguine come perfectly al dente and topped with chunks of meaty lobster.
For drinks Miami’s storied Rose Bar, where former guests included Madonna and George Clooney, has been given a Dubai glow-up. It’s still laced with rose-tinted glamour through its crimson velvet curtains and leather booths, and drinks on the menu include nods to the original through names like Miami Vice(s), a rum-based mix with strawberry and coconut water; and the South Beach, a tequila-based cocktail with mandarin and white chocolate.
ROOMS
Our guest room felt warm and cosy, a separate bathroom and WC on either side as you walk-in, and a wardrobe in the corner where we found some of the comfiest hotel slippers we’ve ever tried – making each step feel like walking on clouds. The Marina-facing balcony was a lovely spot to unwind in an evening, sipping on the welcome amenity of the Delano apple juice. Crisp cotton sheets, grand
marble bathrooms, and an extensive mini bar stocked with everything from tea and coffee to Humantra hydration shots gave the space an elevated and exclusive feel.
FACILITIES
One of the star features of Delano Dubai is the pool. While the Miami original was a regular drawer of the city’s who’s-who, the Dubai iteration appears to appeal more to families, who largely surround the front row of beds at the pool. Access to one of the best beaches in the city is another draw, and guests can enjoy days on the sand relaxing under a yellow and white striped parasol, while soaking in the stretching Arabian Sea views.
SERVICE
The hotel is still ironing out a few teething issues, and as such service lapses a little during busy periods at Tutto Passa. But at all other touch points – valet, reception, and particularly at the pool – everyone we meet is friendly and eager to make our stay memorable.
RATES
An entry level guestroom with resort view starts from Dhs2,460.
