Life is fun, and then sometimes it hurts so much we can’t find words to describe it. While putting 004 together, we decided we didn’t want our words to overshadow those lovingly written by the RIT EVT. We think it would be disingenuous to take that from them. They knew him. They spent countless hours with him. Only his friends and family understood him well enough to say something truly meaningful. But this is what we do know: Billy

Eskeli is part of our motorcycle team. He helped build a motorcycle for goodness sake! So while you read about a Servi-Car with a 1925 engine, and a 1939 Indian Chief, Rochester restaurants, and look at beautiful pictures, remember Billy is part of all of that. He made a mark on motorcycling history. Motoclectic 004 is dedicated to Billy, the spirit of innovation and passion he embodied, and his indelible mark on us all.

FEATURED BUILD
1939 INDIAN CHIEF We asked Tim Engstrom to tell us a little bit about this 1939 Indian Chief. Here’s what he had to say. Photos by Michael Hanlon
I found it through a chance meeting at the Bug Jar. Tom (Bubba) Thornton was riding a Scout and had a ’53 Chief—the last year the original company was in business. He had 80% of the ’39 in pieces in his basement/shop. We chatted, hit it off, and sight unseen, we shook hands on a deal to put it back together. This is one of the best decisions I ever made—we became fast friends in the process. He remains my Indian guru for any and all challenges to keep it up that are beyond my competence—there are still plenty of those… What’s special is that I get to ride a piece of American motorcycle history, and to honor our friendship for all the pleasure the bike has given me, which is tons! I ride it all over the place, and have taken it on some pretty long journeys. It’s been dead reliable and still rides like a champ. It’s still all the original setup: left-hand throttle that rolls forward not back—no spring, the throttle stays where you put it; right hand stick shift and a foot clutch. Just think of it as a two-wheel tractor and you get used to it very easily. Thankfully, it’s different enough from a contemporary bike that there’s no confusion at all. My interest in finding an Indian began as a kid—in a little village on the edge of the Adirondacks. There was an old guy in my village

1939 INDIAN CHIEF with a couple of Indians; he rode them regularly and I got hooked. 30 years later, after riding other bikes, I got lucky and had my own. I also have a ’57 TR3—a two-seater roadster that I drive regularly, and recently sold my ’60 190D Mercedes Benz—diesel—that burned veggie oil. It just needed a subsidiary tank in the trunk, an additional fuel line and a toggle switch inside to switch it back and forth between fuels. I filtered my own used oil, given to me from a local
pizza shop when they swapped out their fryers, and away it went. But after moving I didn’t have enough garage space; damn. I just love the old stuff and use it whenever possible. About me? I work at RIT where a buddy there also has an old Indian—a ’40 Chief. We got into them together. And we both have new Chiefs now that Indian has been successfully re-born and is producing great bikes.

1940 was the first year of the fully-skirted fenders and rear shocks. So, the ’39 is in fact a little lighter and a bit nimbler, but not as smooth over pot holes. The motors of the ’39 and ’40 are otherwise the same.

FOOD REVIEW
GASTRONOMICAL! Dale G. Cuer stretches his digestive system to the limits as he continues his review of “plates” in the greater Rochester area.
Welcome to installment two of Gas-Tronomical. With this entry I plan on not only reviewing plates but also the merits of a ride to the eatery that serves them. It was a good month for plates. Not only did I get to review plates, but I also experienced a Rochester food truck that serves a garbage roll (A plate in an egg roll wrap, and deep fried… Yum!), and a food wagon that specializes in poutine, that makes what they call an All-American (A plate poutine… also Yum!). But I will ignore the distractions and focus on the task at hand: PLATE REVIEWS.
I
n the last issue I laid out the criteria for reviewing plates and started with my first three reviews. I hope that readers will send in suggestions for locations that serve plates, and which would also make a great ride. Each month I hope to add four more reviews to the list so that over time there will be a long list of places to ride and to get some amazing plates!
After that comes the overall flavor. I like my macaroni salad to be a little on the tangy side and not with a lot of extra stuff thrown in. I’ve had Mac salads with carrots, celery, peas, and tuna fish. It’s a little bit too much extra stuff for a garbage plate.
Home fries: With home fries, it’s all about the crispiness, baby! What I’m looking for here is [Editor’s note: In case you don’t have issue 003, good quality crispy potatoes. Not perfectly we’re going to go over Dale’s criteria again. cubed frozen and reheated potatoes, but real Remember, Dale is very specific in his reviews potatoes cooked to a crispy golden goodness. about what HE likes. If you have issue 003, you can skip right to the reviews.] Hot dogs: The red hots need to be a top shelf hot dogs with good flavor, split down the middle, The base plate that I will be testing at each with a little bit of char, either from the griddle top location will be a red hot plate with mac salad or the grill. and home fries with meat sauce. Here’s how the rating system will work. Meat sauce: This one may be the most controversial. There are number of good meat Macaroni Salad: The 1st issue with Mac salad sauces out there, and honestly, I like them all. But is that the macaroni is cooked well. It needs to for this rating system, in order to get my highest be cooked al dente—not mushy. would be the sauces that favor a Louisiana-style hot sauce with ground beef in it. 3rd on the list is a chili sauce. I’ve had some chili-style sauces complete with beans. They’re good, but will get a slightly lower rating. Any other type of meat sauce will rate lower than those.
of road and made for a difficult ride. Then when I ordered my plate they were out of home fries. After two attempts I decided to not make a third, and simply docked them a point for the lack of home fries. So here is how they measured up.
I need to pause for a moment here and remind everyone that anything calling itself a plate, that does not have those first four elements, or those elements are not stacked one atop the other will be disqualified. As part of this month’s review I went to a restaurant that had a so-called plate, but what came out of the kitchen was a hot dog on a roll, with two side dishes in two separate bowls, and no meat sauce, with nothing together. Really, what they were serving was a hot dog and two sides and just calling it a plate. I won’t put the name of the eatery in here but they were disqualified from the review.
The mac salad was cooked but too done for me. There was no tang to it either. Generally, it was okay.
Mustard and onions: I grouped these together because there’s not as much to rate in this area. A plate will lose a point if it doesn’t have onions. It will lose a point if it uses yellow mustard instead of spicy brown mustard and it would lose two points if it had no mustard at all.

HOME FRIES: 3
They had no home fries, so they lost some points here. The french fries were good but still not the standard for these reviews.
MEAT SAUCE: 5
The meat sauce was an excellent traditional meat sauce.

Great hot dogs. They were split and fried.
MUSTARD AND ONIONS: 4
They were good but they used yellow mustard.

PENFIELD HOTS “The Rubbish Plate”
Penfield Hots is well known in the community at large as one of the better plates. While I enjoyed the plate, this particular trip was a general disappointment for me. The first time I stopped at the eatery I was returning from the Adirondacks, and I arrived during posted hours only to find that they were closed. For the next attempt, I rode out for a special trip and travelled through Leroy along the “Our Corkscrew” mentioned in Motoclectic 002. It was a nice ride until I arrived in Penfield. The eatery is on a very busy stretch

MEISNER’S
DARYL’S
Located in Attica NY, this was a good plate and a great ride. Unfortunately, they only serve their “mash plate” on Tuesdays. While the restriction on when the “plates” are available is a pain (you can decide the effected body part), the chance to go to Attica and ride up and down Attica Gulf Road is worth it. This winding road goes up through a picturesque gully and is a lot of fun to ride. If you get the chance, I recommend it. If you can do it on a Tuesday and get a plate at Meisner’s, I doubly recommend it (really really).
Daryl’s is in Perry, NY, and I’m sorry to say that their Landfill Plate is not very good. Perry is a nice little village with a great main street, and East Hill Creamery is just down the road from Daryl’s - with a 24-hr cheese vending machine! Silver Lake Drive-In is a bit farther up the road, which is rated one of the Top 10 in the nation. It is worth the ride but not for this particular plate. (It is a sad thing to get a bad plate.)

Our Story. Welcome to Upstate New York’s newest motorcycle dealership, Cortese Cycle Sales! We are located in Rochester, a city on the southern shores of Lake Ontario in western New York and home of Wegmans, Genesee Brewery and many of upstate New York’s favorite businesses. Our story started in 1975 with Cortese Dodge and over time grew into what’s now known as the Auto Block with brands Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Chrysler, Mitsubishi, Ford and Lincoln. I wanted to take my auto industry experience and success to the motorcycle industry. We saw a void in the upstate market when it came to pre-owned motorcycles. People needed more choices and alternative ways to save money while still getting the bike of their dreams. Understanding this market is larger for preowned than new—because of people’s budgets and the shorter riding season in western New York—we structured our inventory to carry all
the brands for everyone’s riding style. There is a bustling and growing opportunity to provide existing riders and new riders a beautiful top condition pre-owned motorcycle without having to pay top dollar. Our goal is to provide customers with a large selection and an excellent buying experience backed by the Cortese name and warranty. As riders grow and change so does our inventory daily as we constantly acquire bikes based on customer demand and feedback. We have a large selection to fit their riding needs, you can trade your bike into Cortese Cycle Sales and ride out on a new bike the same day. At CCS we are excited to help you experience the energy and adventure that a quality motorcycle can bring into your life. We’ve created a fun experience with a cool atmosphere at our new building on West Henrietta Road. We want our customers to feel good about stopping in to see us and leaving for the open road with the motorcycle of their dreams at a price they can afford.

FEATURED BUILD
A JD TRIKE/SERVI-CAR HYBRID By Tom Owejan
The first Servi-Car was built in 1932 and was marketed to the automotive service industry. It could be hitched to a car, and after the car was delivered, the ServiCar was the delivery driver’s lift home. They became popular with delivery and mobile-service businesses, as well as many police departments.
T
his project was a Harley-Davidson JD Trike that was started in 1969 at Ted’s Cycle Shed. It was a 1925 JD frame with a 1932 Servi-Car rear section grafted to it by Terry Dunkle of Dodge City, KS, while he worked at Ted’s Cycle Shed. The project stalled and was not completed. If not actually lost, the motorcycle was pretty much forgotten. It again
22 | MOTOCLECTIC
saw daylight around 2017 when it was moved to another warehouse and hung from the ceiling. In 2018, Ted commissioned me to finish it, so I hauled it to Rochester. There was not much of it there to start, but the job of marrying the two frames was done masterfully. It looks like it came from the factory like that.
www.motoclectic.com | 23
A JD TRIKE/SERVI-CAR HYBRID The first job was to gather all the necessary parts. I sourced the rear fenders from India. They were made to my specifications and took several months to make. The headlights came from Poland. I had the rear wheel hub caps made in Taiwan. The wooden service box was in one

of Ted’s warehouses and was actually used on a trike at some time in the past. It advertises a traveling magneto service. The front fender had the original paint, so that was the yardstick to finish all the new and fabricated parts; it was essential to match the patina.

www.motoclectic.com | 25
A JD TRIKE/SERVI-CAR HYBRID There was a lot of fabrication performed (as you can see in the photos) and a lot of it was done by hand—making the fender braces and riveting everything together, just as it would have been done in the 1920s. The exhaust is hand built, as are all the linkages and body mounts. I swapped in a good 1925 1200cc motor and 3-speed transmission. The finished motorcycle was displayed at the
Buffalo Motorama Show in 2018 where it earned an Outstanding Motorcycle award.
A little bit about Ted: Ted Doering, owner of Motorcyclepedia, began his business around 1966, working out of the garage attached to his parents’ home. Eventually he built a separate building and Ted’s Cycle Shed was born, where he built chopper motorcycles, show bikes, and operated a chrome exchange. As the business grew, he expanded into selling new and used parts, and Tedd Cycle Inc. came into being in 1968. In 1969 he started V-Twin Manufacturing,
which is a wholesale parts business with a large dealer network. V-Twin is the one of the largest suppliers (if not the largest) of aftermarket Harley-Davidson parts in the world.

DIRTY for GOOD is what you will do if you sign on for this Dual Sport Riding/Training camp. You will get DIRTY and you will do some GOOD for the Women’s Motorcyclist Foundation’s three new fundraising directives.
ue to WMF’s background in hosting Dual Sport Riding/Training Fundraising venues, it was decided to focus its full attention on Off-Road riding with three new fundraising initiatives. Doing so provides great potential for introducing females to off-road riding and the creation of multi-generational families of dirt, dual sport and adventure riders. The DIRTY for GOOD program is female focused. However, others are welcome if they meet the registration and fundraising requirements. Registrants must have a motorcycle endorsement on their licenses along with a suggested 500 miles of recent riding. Additionally, riders must have the health, strength, stamina, agility and balance to be successful riding in the dirt and on trails. Don’t hesitate to bring smaller displacement dual sport bikes. They are lightweight, nimble, lots of fun, and especially appropriate for learning new skills. Registrants must raise a minimum of $300.00 for the Women’s Motorcyclist Foundation’s three initiatives which are explained below under WHAT YOU GIVE.
