Sculpted Paintings™ have continued to evolve, becoming more nuanced in revealing the unfolding story. As an artist, it is my task to put that story on canvas in such a way that when the painting is completed, it encourages the viewer to continue the story.

Satisfaction in painting, for me, is when I feel so connected to the scene before me that all at once I see the intensity of light, the richness of color, and the sublime essence of my surroundings.

I find myself on a constant self-search within my art. Shapes and colors and their relationships play a large part in my paintings and collage. My current search concerns shapes and symbols from the past as related to the present. Icons and remnants from history to graffiti are present in my work.

This art is celebratory in intention. It is focused on light, color, space and the forces of nature.

My drawings are primarily landscapes, including both natural and man-made forms. Each image evolves from a strong, emotional response to a visual experience. Then begins the battle with composition, color, light and space as I try to recapture that initial response...and therein lies the conundrum...

These paintings represent more than just the act of Rodeo. They reflect the changes in the American West, the slowly dying Americana, which is now represented more in the movies or as a clichĂŠ. I am interested in the contrast between reality and myth, the struggle between nature and man.

There is a certain quality of light in the early morning or late afternoon, with its rich contrasts of light against dark, that calls me to paint it, to tell a story.

Harder, a printmaker and painter of 24 years, is currently working with viscosity inks in a reductive process. The viscosity process is very finicky, especially when three or more colors are involved. Hand-wiping or sketching into the plate creates subtle color variations so each and every viscosity print is unique. Each print serves as a gessoed surface and then is selectively hand-painted, therefore producing a one-of-a-kind image.

As an artist and one who appreciates the human anatomy, my new rendering is geometric abstraction of the human form. Naylor works in the “alla prima manner, completing a painting in one session when possible. He takes a strong interest in light and shadow, warm and cool colors, and the interplay between the landscape (urban and rural) and its human inhabitants.

I believe that paint has a language, as well as the image or content of a painting. I try to interpret nature in an intuitive manner, scruffy, romantic elegance without being overtly sentimental.

Through my architectural background, I have always been involved with the visual world and interested in how we react to our surroundings. I strive to simplify the elements and abstract the essence of the scene, not to imitate or copy, but to be inspired by its ambiance. Â Art is like a journey toward understanding our inner relationship to our environment and to develop an intuitive response to the beauty around us.

In my paintings, I strive to radiate the life in the subject and the connection that I am feeling. I am drawn by the beautiful relationships of color, the “a-ha” moment that I see in the faces of people, the landscapes and the animals of New Mexico. All of this intrigues me and is what I hope to capture in my paintings.

For a number of years, we have leased the meadow of our property in the mountains for summer pasture for some of our neighbor’s cows. I’m not from a cattle-working background, but I became fascinated with the animals and spent many hours watching them while we sat on the porch, rode or walked in the field. I became interested in their character and personality, and that’s what I like to convey in my paintings.
