In truth, there doesn’t seem to be any real solution to this problem. A visit to Guernsey early in the month showed us how they deal with it there. They are stripped of anything useful,

slowly we are starting to hear about the industry taking this problem seriously. In the meantime, I’ll do my best to try and keep a few of these ‘old tubs’ on the water where they belong, and we’ll bring some news on that front in the new year. Last week I paid my first visit to the Berlin Boat Show, a great show full of lots of affordable boats. I was there to take part in the Best of Boats awards and was honoured to present the Best for Family award to Sargo for their 33. Full details of the awards are on page 8. Talking of winning, the draw has been made for our reader survey, and emails have been sent to the four lucky winners of a Standard Horizon VHF radio. We have heard loaded onto a lorry and then crushed and back from one winner so far, so sent to landfill. Renato (Sonny) Levi 1926-2016

Motorboat Owner is sad to announce the passing of Renato (Sonny) Levi. Regarded by many as the ‘The father of modern powerboat design’, Levi was responsible for boats such as the beautiful Corsair 27 (pictured racing the Cowes-Torquay in 1965) and Triana models of the 1960’s, these were fibreglass boats with racing DNA, deep V hulls and powered by twin Volvo Aquamatic engines. Levi was born in India and the influence of his fathers shipbuilding saw him move into marine design at an early age, with a particular focus on ‘smaller, fast craft, and the ability of such craft to withstand the varieties of sea conditions often encountered’. Sonny’s design for the 1961 Cowes-Torquay Race finished sixth, and marked the beginning of a series of fast powerboat designs. Among his memorable designs was the 1965 Surfury and of course, in the 1980’s Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, Richard Branson’s record breaking trans-Atlantic crossing powerboat. In a tribute written for the Classic Offshore Powerboat Club, Secretary, Martin Napier wrote ‘developments in high speed propeller and drive systems have been part of Sonny’s great contribution to fast boat development over the last forty or more years’.

Cardiff carbon monoxide poisoning fatality

MAIB

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is conducting investigations on the motorboat ‘Vasquez’ at Cardiff Yacht Club. Its owner was found collapsed onboard and, despite the efforts of fellow club members and emergency services, he did not regain consciousness and was pronounced deceased. It is understood that the boat’s engine had been running with its canopies up and the MAIB recorded high levels of CO inside the cockpit. The rescuers were displaying symptoms of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and were treated in hospital.

Best of Boats Awards 2016 winners announced The winners of the 2016 Best of Boats Awards, known to the industry as the BOB awards, were announced at November’s Berlin Boat and Fun show in Germany. With five ‘Best for’ catergories, 25 shortlisted boats were whittled down and the five winning boats are below. The BOB jury panel is made up of professional boating journalists from 15 countries including Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Ukraine and the UK. At the ceremony, Motorboat Owner Editor and UK BOB juror, Neale Byart presented the ‘Best for Family’ award to the Sargo 33, and congratulated close runner up, the Bavaria R40. NEWS EU satellite launch to shape the future of search and rescue In mid November four new satellites were launched into space aboard an Ariane rocket, and signalled a new dawn in search and rescue technology. The deployment of the satellites will increase the global coverage of the European Union’s Galileo satellite constellation, bringing the number of satellites in space up to 18. Galileo provides aglobal positioning system and will offer new Search and Rescue (SAR) capabilities. It now means, in cases of emergency, for example a vessel sinking, distress signal times will be faster and in 2018, messages will be sent back to users, confirming that their distress signal has been received. The European Commission (EC) has selected UK safety equipment manufacturer and specialist, McMurdo, to lead the development of next-generation search and rescue distress beacons, such as EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon), PLBs (Personal Location Beacon) and SARTs (Search And Rescue Transponder).

Poole lifeboat to be retired - station to become inshore

During November, Poole Lifeboat Station officially became an inshore lifeboat station and its crew said a sad farewell to their 46ft Tyne-class lifeboat, City of Sheffield. It was a moving occasion as crews gathered on its deck for a last photograph and then a flotilla of vessels followed the lifeboat out of the harbour for the last time. The lifeboats crew combined 165 years of volunteering between them. The Tyne-class will be replaced by two inflatable class inshore lifeboats, B-826 a 27ft Atlantic 85 RIB and D-798, a 16ft D-class inflatable.

Guernsey’s RNLI lifeboat, The Spirit of Guernsey will have a new base this winter, the 55ft Severn-class lifeboat is usually stationed on a swinging mooring in St Peter Port harbour. However, this winter it will be moored at the Inter-Island Quay, which is close to the main ferry terminal. Crucially, throughout the winter months, its St Peter Port crew will be able to step directly aboard, making for a quicker departure. The Guernsey lifeboat is one of only four operating in the Channel Islands, with two in Jersey and another Severn class in Alderney.

NEWS Sunseeker International founder wins Lifetime Achievement Award Robert Braithwaite CBE DL, pictured, Founder of Sunseeker International, is celebrating winning the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at this year’s Boat Builder Awards. Among the eight categories celebrated at an awards ceremony at The National Maritime Museum, Amsterdam, the Lifetime Achievement Award recognised Robert’s outstanding contribution to the marine industry in establishing, Sunseeker International. Robert said “It is a great honour to receive such an award, I have dedicated much of my life to this industry and have strived to make Sunseeker the world-renowned luxury brand that it is today. I am very proud of what Sunseeker International has become over the last 47 years, it is quite an achievement. We are continuing to grow worldwide thanks to our investment in new products, shipyard facilities and our people, it is exciting to see what the future will hold.” He founded Sunseeker in 1969 and today it is considered to be ‘Britain’s biggest boat builder’.

BBC The Apprentice ‘Boat Show’ episode The BBC television programme, The Apprentice, sees candidates competing to go into business with multi-millionaire tycoon, Lord Sugar and Episode 7 ‘Boat Show’ saw candidates instructed to ‘tap PLAY into one of the UK’s biggest markets, the boating and leisure industry. ‘The task is simple, pick the right products and sell them at Poole Harbour Boat Show’. The episode saw the two teams go head to head to secure and then sell one of two high value products, Yamaha PWC’s and a Bayliner Element E5 supplied by UK dealer, Bates Wharf. Other products, such as face snorkels and knee boards were sold to the public via a show stand. On the day, heavy rain took its toll but team ‘Nebula’ were clear winners with sales of over £40k, including two Bayliner Elements. Now in its 12th series, The Apprentice is on BBC 1 every Thursday at 9pm (Nov-Dec) and you can watch the episode via the BBC iPlayer. 12

Guernsey Harbours

New potentially life-saving equipment has been installed at St Peter Port Harbour. A publicly accessible defibrillator or PAD, is now located at the Inter-Island Quay and Guernsey Harbours say ‘It is specially designed so it can be used by anyone, without the need for any first aid or medical training, if someone is suspected of having a heart attack. It will deliver a safe electrical impulse to the heart, to help restore blood circulation.’ This device is one of seven defibrillators in key locations around St Peter Port Harbour. However, the other six are ‘not publicly accessible’ and are to be operated by trained emergency first responders, including Guernsey Harbours staff. The devices are located at the main Harbour Office, the Marina Office at Victoria Pier, Visit Guernsey’s welcome facilities at Albert Pier, the New Jetty ferry passenger terminal, and at Customs.

New crane and lock opening times for Birdham Pool The lock opening times at Birdham Pool Marina in Chichester Harbour have changed recently, the lock will now be in operation 3 hours before and 4 hours after Portsmouth HW. Also the 265-berth marina has a new crane and a development of waterside cottages is underway.

Television aerials

Following your advice on TV aerials in the Oct 16 issue, I thought I could offer some input. I’ve given up on omnidirectional boat aerials, at least on the Thames. They just don’t work. An alternative is to use a fixed domestic aerial and a free antenna aligner app, which will show the direction of the nearest strongest transmitter. You might have to retune your TV but it works much better and its cheaper. Mike Rourke Editor replies: I have always had reasonable success with our Status omnidirectional aerial, although I do have to re-tune every time the boat is moved, but its always good to hear of a cost effective alternative.

GPS Speed Log and Solent motorboat charters

I popped by your stand at the Southampton Boat Show to ask about GPS speed logs, and also that we were looking to experience motor cruising on the Solent and enquired after charter companies. Just a note to thank you on both counts. Your recollection of the instrument in the Haines 26 was spot-on. I followed up your lead to discover that it was a Wema GPS digital speed log, and have now made contact with Wema UK. Also your suggestion to do an RYA Day Skipper practical course in the Solent is an excellent idea which I intend to follow up. Tom & Jo Brissenden Sealine 218

T

om Brissenden started boating with a Ryds 475, a small open boat, which he towed to different places and used for waterskiing. It was on one of these trips, when he was down in Devon, that he had an epiphany. “I realised that I needed a boat that I could use in much the same way, but that I could also stay onboard while we were away”, he tells us. It just so happened that on the local slipway there was a Sealine 215 that had

been underwater and was in a sorry state but it obviously ticked a box or two as it was here that Tom’s quest to own the perfect Sealine started. “The 215 looked to be about the right size, as the boat had to be trailable, so I started to look at a range of compact Sealine cruisers, including the 215, 218, 220, 230, 240 and S23”. To most of us, the 215, 218 and 220 are pretty much identical, but to Tom, with his keen eye

for detail, he quickly narrowed the choice down to the 218, as the few very minor differences made this the perfect boat and the layout “just worked”. The 218 was quite a short lived model, being a development of the 215 that then quickly morphed into the 220, so they can be quite difficult to find. The search started in the summer of 2013 and, come September of that year, Tom found himself looking at a 1989 Sealine 218 on Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

“I wanted the boat to play a part in our big day”

eBay. The boat was in Nottingham, but Tom wasn’t put off. He set off from his home in Norfolk on the Tuesday and was back on the Saturday to pick it up after a successful viewing. “The boat was very original and was pretty much as it left the factory, apart from the 24 years of wear and tear”, he explained. To collect it, Tom had to borrow a trailer and, as he worked for Broom Boats in their engineering and Service Centre departments, he had a few

contacts and a suitable trailer was quickly found. With the newly acquired boat loaded onto the borrowed trailer and hitched up to his trusty Toyota Landcruiser, Tom delivered the boat back to Brundall in Norfolk where he got to work almost straight away. Working on many upgrades

for Broom Boats, Tom had a very good idea of what he wanted and more than enough skills to carry it out but in the beginning he started, as all good restoration projects do, by ripping the boat apart. “I really went to town on the interior”, he tells us, “I removed pretty

much everything that I could, including the bulkheads”. As well as tearing out the interior, Tom also got to work on the exterior. The old red antifoul was blasted off in preparation for his preferred white hull, and he added a Vetus bowthruster. In the cockpit, the helm console and companionway hatch were removed, so that Tom could change the colour from the original grey to a more modern looking white, and these were sent off for repainting. All of the cockpit seating and covered panels were also taken out and sent away to have new bases made, the foam renewed and to be covered in a modern ‘Silvertex’ type material, as used in modern day Sealines. Initially, Tom was gong to keep the boat’s original V6 petrol engine but, a year into the project, he spotted a Falcon 22 for sale with a Volvo Penta KAD32 diesel Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

engine. He secured this boat for £10,000, swapped the engines and outdrives over and sold the Falcon on. “Doing it this way allowed me to convert Firefly to diesel for around £2,000” Tom tells us. “It was a tight fit getting the KAD32 into the engine bay. In the end I had to remove quite a few ancillaries and still tilt and twist it to get it through the engine bay hatch”. Back inside the boat Tom either

completely renewed, or if the original wood was still in good condition, reveneered all of the internal bulkheads. He took the opportunity to remodel the galley and changed it from a dark unit with split level worktop and under flap hob into a light and modern one-level unit with built-in fridge and a hob recessed

into the new Avonite worktop. Once the bulkheads were back in place to form the toilet compartment, this received similar treatment with an new toilet, a re-modelled Avonite worktop with the boat’s existing sink being recessed into the worktop after being painted with International’s Perfection 709, to change Bulkheads were removed and remade, new headlining was installed and wood panels were newly veneered

its colour from grey to white. This was the same paint Tom used on the dash and companionway hatch. The forward cabin and midships berth had also been completely gutted and were refurbished with new headlining and side

panels that were fixed to all new battens, new thicker foam for the cushions, which were all reshaped and reupholstered in a modern Sealine style material, new carpet, blinds at the portholes and hatch, which themselves were removed and

were replaced with Tom installing some conduit down both sides of the boat before he started the rebuild to ease this process. To finish off the electrical work, Tom commissioned a new breaker panel from Axon. With the new engine came all new engine instrumentation, so Tom needed some new dash panels to go with his recently painted helm console. “I cut the new panels from 1.5mm aluminium and painted them grey� he explains. The result is impressive and looks factory finished. While refitting the helm, Tom also upgraded the steering from the old rack and pinion to a Sea Star hydraulic system. He also added a new suite of Raymarine electronics including an ES7 multifunction display with DownVision sonar and Evolution autopilot, an AIS 350 and a

new speed and depth instrument for the little pod above the companionway door. The helm also benefits from a whole new array of Carling switches for the various circuits. “I didn’t use most of the existing Volvo engine instruments”, Tom tells us, “as I simply didn’t have space for them all. Instead I kept the original warning light array and the Volvo trim gauge, and to these I added a Faria rev counter and a matching four way instrument that

combines oil pressure, fuel, volts and temperature”. Tom had to install a couple of new senders on the engine to get these working properly and also had the tacho calibrated for accuracy. Other changes made while the work was ongoing includes a new set of trim tabs, all new seacocks, three new batteries and a Webasto diesel heating system. Apart from all new upholstery, the cockpit also benefited from numerous other upgrades,

Sitting in the cockpit, it’s hard to believe that you are onboard a boat that is nearly 30 years old

such as new teak doors on the gas and cockpit lockers, a customized cockpit table with folding leaf to allow easy access past, and a change of transom gate from a solid GRP one with a lift open flap to a stainless steel version fabricated and TIG welded by Tom, with a plastic insert. Over the whole cockpit, Firefly was treated to a new canopy, which was made from beige Sunbrella to match the cockpit upholstery. It was also re-designed, with an extra hoop at the aft end to provide full headroom height all the way aft. Externally, the boat had its 1980’s pinstripes removed and the whole bathing platform taken off to carry out numerous gelcoat repairs. “It was originally fixed to the boat with self tappers, but when I put it back I through-bolted it for extra strength”, he explained. “I also fitted Flexiteek to the bathing platform and step, and am thinking about carrying that through into the cockpit”.

So how many hours has all this work taken? “I didn’t keep count, but I was working on the boat pretty much every Saturday for two and a half years, plus two or three evenings a week in my garage and the odd day off from work as well. I had to keep going as I had given myself a deadline of July 2016 to get the boat on the water as I was getting married to Jo down in Devon, and I wanted the boat to play a part in our big day”. The boat was in fact launched in May and was used as transport during the wedding. As well as spending some time down in Devon, Tom has also trailed the boat to the Solent, where he kept it for a couple of months and explored the local area, visiting Lymington, the Hamble, Southampton and Cowes. At the end of the summer, after a spell in Ocean Village Marina, where it provided accommodation for the Southampton Boat Show, Firefly was loaded onto its trailer and taken back to its

home berth at Woolverstone Marina, on the River Orwell in Suffolk, for the winter. “I’ve clocked up around 160nm this year and hope to continue moving it around on its trailer so that I can explore new places every year”, he tells us. “I also have a few more jobs to do, such as removing and overhauling the cockpit windscreen, but for now I am just enjoying using the boat”. The big question is, how much has all this cost? “A considerable amount”, is Tom’s answer. “I have spent far more on it than I probably should have, but I knew what I wanted, and the only way to get it was to do what I did. In doing so I have ended up with my perfect trailboat”. I have to agree. Firefly is a testament to Tom’s eye for detail and is, without doubt, one of the nicest pocket cruisers of its type that I have ever seen. The result of all his hard work, and not inconsiderable expense, is truly stunning and should Just married. Find a flybridge for £50k

Q I am looking to upgrade from a sportsboat on a trailer to my first big

‘cruising’ boat. Ideally I want a sub 40ft flybridge boat, with twin diesels, that is capable of cruising at 20+ knots. I would prefer shaft drive, over sterndrive, and I have a budget of £50k. What boats should I be looking for?

A You are going to be looking at something along the ‘classic’ lines to meet all

of your criteria, but there are in fact some fantastic boats to consider. I am going to stick with some old British favourites, as there should be plenty to choose from at any one time. From the Fairline stable you could easily pick up a 31ft Corniche, but be aware that these were available in both sterndrive and shaftdrive configuration. You should also be able to find the slightly larger and newer Fairline Brava within your budget. The best accommodation for your money though, at least with the Fairline brand, will come in the form of a Turbo 36, with its palatial aft cabin. You could also hunt out the aft cockpit version of the same boat, the 36 Sedan. From Princess you have another selection of fabulous boats such as the 388, 385, 330, 35, 37 and the original 38. Princess also produced the 315, but, like the Corniche, this was available with shafts or stern drives. Of course you could also look at some boats that are just over your 40ft maximum size, such as the original Fairline 40, the Princess 412, 414 and even the 415. There are, of course, plenty of others to choose from out there, such as the Birchwood TS37, a rather underrated boat in my opinion. In fact, there has never been a better time to get lots of boat for your money. The most difficult thing is going to be narrowing it down from so many great models. Just make sure whatever you end up buying has been well loved and properly serviced and, despite its advancing age, it should provide sterling service for many years to come. Boat age and engine hours

Q I am in the market for my first cruiser, after

spending a few years with sportsboats and RIBs, and at my budget the boats I am looking at are all quite old, usually around 15 or more years old. My main concern is with the engines and drives as they appear to be where most of the value is, looking at the prices of boats that need new engines. So far, the boats I have looked at have all had in the region of 500-1000 hours. Having tinkered with cars all my life I am not too concerned about the engines, as I could happily strip them down and rebuild them if necessary, but all my boats so far have been outboards and I am concerned about the outdrives. Are they generally likely to be serviceable and free of big problems at the age and hours I am looking at?

A 500-1000 hours is nothing in the scheme of things. Engines and drives are

more likely to be suffering from lack of use rather than wearing out at this age and with these hours. As long as the drives (and engines for that matter) have been well maintained and regularly serviced, they should continue to give good service with the correct ongoing service regime. A service history will show how they have been maintained up to now, but there are some other checks you should do. Check for water in the drive oil (the boat will need to be out of the water to do this) and evidence of a recent service, such as newish looking bellows, and anodes with plenty of life left in them. If the UJ bellows is cracked, split, loose or even missing, that should ring very loud alarm bells, as would finding emulsified oil in the drives, and I would be walking away or seeking a big enough discount to fix any potential problems. Check also for leaks of hydraulic oil from the trim rams. These can be fixed, but replacing them if they are beyond repair is expensive, and may even involve removing engines. 28

GPS antenna

Q I have bought a boat with a Raymarine C120

classic multi-function display but it doesn’t seem to get a GPS fix. It has a Raystar 120 GPS antenna, which do not seem to be available anymore. Can I use any other GPS antenna?

A Yes you can, but before I come to that, does it pick up a signal eventually if

left on for a long time, such as a few hours? It is quite common to find that the internal battery has died on these older GPS antennas, which means that they forget where they are and have to go through a long acquiring process each time they are fired up. If this is the case with yours, then the battery can be easily and cheaply replaced. We are going to be looking at this next month so maybe hold off buying a new antenna if you believe this may be the fault with yours. If, however, your antenna is definitely broken, you can replace it with a newer Raystar 125 or 130 model. You may need to check to see if yours is connected through Seatalk or NMEA, as Raymarine supplied two different models and it would be an easier fit to get the same. Alternatively, if you are on a budget and are able to connect it via NMEA0183, you should be able to replace the Raystar 120 with one of the generic GPS antennas sold on internet auction and shopping sites, such as the Evermore SA320.

Cleaning grubby white vinyl

Q Now that the boat is out of the water for the winter I am catching up on all the cleaning and maintenance jobs, but I have one rather stubborn problem. The white vinyl transom seat is looking particularly grubby, and may even have some sun damage. What is the best cleaner out there for this?

A One of the best chemicals I have ever used for cleaning vinyl is Promarine

Ribshine. It will bring everyday grime out well, and can be used with a magic sponge for really grubby vinyl. If the vinyl is actually damaged, rather than just dirty, then no cleaning product is likely to help. In this case you could try a vinyl dye or paint, before going all out and replacing it. Winter storage cover

Q I will shortly take my Broom

Ocean 40 out of the water for winter storage on a hard standing. Unfortunately the area is surrounded by trees and this encourages the growth of mould etc. There is an old cover in the boat yard that was apparently designed for a smaller Broom model. This cover has survived the rigours of many Irish winters. The manufacturer Boat Shell Covers would appear to be no longer in existence. I would greatly appreciate any help that you or your readers could offer in helping me source a similar cover. All I have found so far are lightweight marquee/tent type covers, that really do not look robust enough.

A The best that I can come up with is Dancover Boat Covers. They don’t appear

to look quite as robust as your original cover but if you send them your image they may be able to offer a suitable sturdy replacement. If any of our readers know of a suitable cover manufacturer or supplier, please do get in touch and we’ll pass the information on.

Replacement part for rope cutter

Q Some time back I fitted a ‘Gator’ rope cutter, which seems to work

well. However, when I lifted the boat out this year, lo and behold, I’ve lost the fixed anchor part of the cutter. It has either stripped the holding bolts or just vibrated off, I don’t know. I’ve searched the net to try to find a supplier (I’ve lost the original invoice although I have the fitting instructions) with no luck. Among your contacts do you know of one that can supply a replacement part for the cutter?

A The Gator was designed and brought to market by a Sussex based

engineering company, which I understand is run by a boat owner. The company is SAK Equipment Ltd and although their website does not mention this aspect of their work, I have spoken to them and they confirmed that they do still produce and sell Gator rope cutters and can help you out with your request. of the Plough and Sail’, Tollesbury grew as a town reliant on the sea and land, thriving on the local Oyster fishing and farming industries. During the Iron Age and Roman times the marshy peninsular to the south east of the village was used for salt-production, and later for grazing livestock. But, of course, where there was water, there was sailing and boat building too. The four timber weatherboarded sailmakers lofts that stand proudly on the waterfront, known as the Hard, are testament to a busy sailing

boatyard past. These lofts have now been rejuvenated as a café and bases for local businesses. There wasn’t just sailing here though, from the early 70’s until the late 80’s, motorboat builders, Beaves Marine Ltd were based at a yard in Tollesbury, producing its aft cabin Europa 4 and 22 models, and the 24 and 2plus2 cockpit cruisers. Today, at the Hard, Woodrolfe Road slips gently into the creek, and the 19th century black weatherboarded Granary, once a trading store, sits at the edge of

Retired Trinity Lightship is a local landmark. Tidal-sculpted mud glistens in the evening sun

Woodrolfe Boatyard. Just inside this there is a 250-berth marina, with a tidal sill that retains the water and allows boats to float at all states of the tide. Built in 1970, Tollesbury Marina is sheltered by the surrounding countryside, and makes for a peaceful bolthole for explorations of the Blackwater and surrounding area. To the east is an area known as the Tollesbury Saltings, the intriguing pattern of muddy creeks are used as tidally restricted drying moorings for a variety of boats. The redcoloured Trinity Lightship is a permanent resident of Woodrolfe Creek and is a prominent landmark on the landscape. Built in 1954, this 41-metre retired

lightship is now home to an outdoor activity centre. On particularly high spring tides the water laps around the sail lofts, and road access to the boatyard and marina is temporarily cut off. The change is dramatic as the low level landscape is covered by water. Tollesbury’s small and unspoilt, picturesque village centre is just under a mile west from the waterfront and has a bakery, a petrol garage, two food/general stores, a chemist, a butchers, a pub and two churches. Village life centres around Tollesbury has its own sandy beach. Woodup saltwater swimming pool was built in 1907

If you are looking for a busy coastal high street, perhaps this is not the place for you. However, the busy towns of Maldon and Colchester are only a short bus ride away.

that you have the latest chart and tidal information. Access to the marina is approximately 2 hours either side of high water on a spring tide and an hour either side on a neap. We would always recommend approaching on a rising tide and, on your first visit, entering Woodrolfe Creek (the shallowest part of the approach) an hour before high water, as the Saltings cover at the top of a spring tide, making it difficult to see the channel edges and landmarks.

The Blackwater estuary is wellmarked, and the surrounding landscape is fairly low lying. The future of the one conspicuous landmark in the estuary, the Bradwell nuclear power station in the south, is unclear. Upon entering the Blackwater, navigate towards the buoyed channel called the ‘Mersea Quarters’ (Buoys 1-6) and Nass Beacon. The east cardinal buoy, Quarters Spit, marks the start of the channel leading southwest. The speed limit in this channel is 8 knots. Keeping a close eye on the depth, leave Quarters Spit to starboard. On your port side will be port marker, No 2 ‘Nass’. The next Port marker, No 4, and the east cardinal, Great Cob, mark a split in the channel, with the buoyed southern channel being the appropriate one to follow to Tollesbury. This is marked on the chart as ‘South Channel’. Next, a series of six starboard markers, odd numbers 1-11, mark the edge of the channel and the drying islands Great Cob and Little Cob. Further on, to port, is the lonely No 6 port marker, and the channel slowly leads around to the west, and then north west, to a section called the ‘Leavings’. This part

of the approach channel is deeper and, traditionally, where the fishing smacks were left over the tide. Here the channel is marked and you’ll need to proceed on between the lines of swinging moorings. Before the entrance to Woodrolfe Creek (drying) there are several white buoys marked ‘Marina’. Essentially waiting buoys, here boats can lie afloat and monitor the depth of water over the sill at

Tollesbury Marina using the adjacent tide gauge marker. A second depth gauge on the sill itself indicates the depth of water in feet. As a rule, on a spring tide, there is normally 10ft (3m) over the sill at high water. On neaps the depth over the sill is approximately 6ft (2m) at high water. On a really high spring tide there could be as much as 12ft (3.6m) depth over the sill. Occasionally there will be an unusually small neap high water, where the depth on the sill may be less than 2m. The marina and approaches are dredged frequently. Woodrolfe Creek channel heads south west and is well marked by sets of port and starboard buoys (lit). The speed limit in the creek is 4 knots. Favour the centre of the dredged channel. However, upon passing the Trinity Lightship favour the starboard side of the channel for greater depth. At the last buoy, No 23 Karina, the channel bears round to the west, and ahead lies the marina sill, indicated by a port beacon on the shore and the greentopped tide gauge (lit) to starboard, at the bottom of the Woodrolfe Boatyard slipway.

The 250-berth Tollesbury Marina floats at all states of tide and has shorepower, fuel, water and WiFi

harbour master on VHF channel 37 or 80, or telephone the marina office on 01621 869202. There is no dedicated area for visitors, with boats being allocated a suitable vacant berth within the marina, so we would always recommend contacting the marina in advance. The marina can accommodate boats up to 60ft in length and a 7ft draft. Berths are arranged over eight floating pontoons, A-J. After crossing the sill, G is the first pontoon to port and J is to starboard. The main fingers F-A are to

starboard, A being in the top north west corner of the basin. The marina offers various mooring categories for visitors, starting with a short term ‘over high tide’ berth for a flat rate of £5. A 12-hour stay for a 10-metre boat is £18, whilst 24 hours is £21. The daily rate for electricity is £3.50 and free WiFi is available in the marina. Toilets, shower and a laundry can be found at the back of the Harbour View restaurant. The marina also has facilities for trailboaters, with a field close to the hardstanding with pitches

The home of the ‘Mud Club’. The Tollesbury Saltings are drying mud moorings with fixed staging, accessible by gravel paths and walkways

for tents, motorhomes and caravans with 240v connections. The Tollesbury Saltings, (01621 868113) is another alternative for visitors able to dry out. To the north of the marina entrance channel and lightship, a myriad of gravel pathways and gated narrow walkways lead through to a backwater of drying mud moorings with fixed staging. Moorings are numbered and visitors are charged £1.50 per metre per night. Annual berths are available here for £145 per metre, per year. On the shore behind the characteristic old sail lofts, there is a hardstanding, toilets and showers, a car park and workshops. The village centre is picturesque with some 14th century buildings

Where to eat & drink

A bar with great food is just yards away. The Harbour View Bistro and Bar (01621 869561) overlooks the marina from the west bank. During the months of July and August it is open 7 days a week. Outside those two months it is closed on Monday and Tuesdays. If you find yourself in Tollesbury village centre, the ‘only pub in town’, The King’s Head, makes for a great pit stop to sample the local beer. This 17th century seafarers pub does not serve food, but you are sure to receive a friendly local welcome. If you are looking for cake, a coffee or a spot of lunch, The Loft is a little vintage

gem of a tearoom. Set in the northern most sail loft, it’s open Tuesday to Saturday 10:30am-4pm and 10am-2pm on Sundays. It also hosts themed dinner events, including Caribbean and Greek nights. A hearty ‘greasy spoon’ breakfast can be found at the Tollesbury Café, next to the flood gates off the waterfront, and a curry can be obtained from Ruby’s (01621 868 942), who will deliver to the marina from the nearby village of Tolleshunt D’Arcy.

Basic provisions, such as bread and long-life milk are available from the Tollesbury Marina Chandlery. The traditional sawdust butchers, GL Leavett can be found on the way into town on the corner of Woodrolfe Road and Mell Road (15-minute walk from the marina). It is open Tuesday-Saturday. At the same junction, Fred’s Stores is a few yards away along Mell Road. This general store offers food supplies, newspapers and a cashpoint (£1.75 charge). In Tollesbury, a 20-minute walk, there is a Post Office-cum-general store (no ATM but cashback available). A green grocer sets a stall up in Tollesbury on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. In the High Street, Perfect Buns sells fresh bread, cakes and sandwiches. The nearest supermarket is Morrisons in Maldon (on the 95 bus route).

Bradwell is another local remote and pretty village on the Blackwater, offering a full tidal access marina and good facilities. To the east of Mersea Island, Brightlingsea is a lovely port to visit (see guide Feb16 issue). The River Crouch is the next river south of the Blackwater and has several all-tides marinas, including Burnham Yacht Harbour, Essex Marina and Fambridge Yacht Station and Yacht Haven. first part of the walk takes you past a captivating network of inlets where boats are marooned on the mud, some used, some dilapidated. The sea wall is also dotted with WWII pillboxes, and the views out to the Blackwater are superb. We can also recommend a short stroll out to see the Trinity Lightship. You can find the pathway via the Tollesbury Saltings car park and hard standing (entrance is between the sail lofts). Tollesbury Marina is a great place for families, as visitors have access to the outdoor heated swimming pool, which is enclosed by a ‘bubble’ cover, and two tennis courts behind the Harbour View restaurant. Tollesbury also has its very own beach next to the marina. Woodup Pool is a tidal saltwater pool with sand and

a grass area with picnic tables and BBQs. FACT, short for Fellowship Afloat Charitable Trust (01621 868113), is based aboard Tollesbury’s Trinity Lightship and offers a variety of outdoor activities for all ages. This includes bird watching tours and estuary watercolour painting classes, as well as kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, and RYA sailing and powerboat training courses. Slightly further afield is the stunning Tudor gatehouse, Layer Marney Tower. This ‘statement’ terracotta-brick residence was visited by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, and if you climb the 99 steps to the top of the tower, there is a magnificent view across the Blackwater. It is a 20-minute (9-mile) car ride away from the marina. Day entry for adults is £7 and children are

The second is tucked in the northeast corner of the marina, is a steeper angle and also accessed by the boatyard. tested SeaSmart Toilet Sanitiser It’s strange how some boats suffer from smelly toilets when others don’t, but if yours is one of the former you have probably, like us and our Sealine, tried various different products and techniques to solve it. If the problem is a rotten egg type sulphurous smell when you first flush the toilet after a period of inactivity, it is caused by organic matter decaying anaerobically in the raw water flush inlet pipe. That is the pipe that runs from your toilet inlet seacock, to the toilet itself. This is the reason why pouring any type of chemical down the toilet doesn’t have any effect. It is simply only treating the system from the toilet onwards. Most products on the market aim to deal with the problem by treating the water as it comes into the boat. Often they use a disinfectant type block, not too dissimilar to what you might use in the toilet at home, in the inlet pipe. I have tried these myself and found them to be effective up to a point, but not good enough to completely solve the issue. To try and deal with it once and for all, at the beginning of the season I installed

“It’s the best product the latest product we have tested to specifically designed fix this problem” to deal with this problem, the SeaSmart Value 3/5 toilet sanitiser. Usability 4/5 Performance 4/5 Installation is pretty straightforward (see August 2015 issue) and the system works by pumping a small amount of disinfectant, that is claimed to be environmentally friendly, into the inlet pipe right at the seacock end. This means that all of the water in the pipe should be treated all of the time. The unit is controlled by a microprocessor that is said to adjust the amount of disinfectant being injected, depending upon how often the toilet is being used. It is also said to add disinfectant occasionally, even when the boat is not being used, to ensure it stays smell free. The system can be used on both manual and electric toilets. In use the SeaSmart has worked well. It delivers nice blue, slightly-scented flush water and in all but one occasion has kept

the smell completely at bay. The one time we still experienced a smell was after a full month of not being used. The smell was not as strong as I know it would have been before the system, but it was definitely there. I was hoping that the occasional injection of disinfectant when the boat is not in use would have prevented this, but ultimately it worked every other time when the boat was left for a week or two, so on the whole the system does a decent enough job. The sanitiser pouches are unique to SeaSmart and cost £23.50 each. How long they last will depend on how often the toilet is used, but on our boat we have given it what I would call pretty average use for two people for a season, around 80 hours and roughly 40 nights onboard, and we are still on the original pouch. This would suggest a pouch a season would probably be right for most boats. The unit runs from a single 9 volt PP3 battery, and again our initial battery is still going strong. The SeaSmart has three LEDs on the front, two of which will report low sanitiser or battery, the other flashes when in use. The actual dispensing is noisier than I was expecting, noisy enough that it could be an issue at night, but this is a small price to pay to more or less remove a problem we have been putting up with ever since we bought the boat. Channel Islands 32 F or all those looking for a sleek, fashionable, ‘sporty’ cruiser, look away now. If you like your boats to look rugged and ready for anything, please read on. The wheelhouse cruiser has long been in our midst and can be defined by two words, ‘functional’ and ‘sturdy’. It can be a platform for work or play, and is equally at home when being used for fishing, or as the conservative choice for leisure boaters who take their cruising seriously. If you are looking for a wheelhouse boat, the names Hardy, Nelson, Aquastar and

Seaward will no doubt crop up. However, there is one understated model that often remains in the background. A boat that is desirable, affordable and much loved by its owners. Everyone knows the Channel Islands 22 but it is its larger sibling that we want to cast the spotlight on, the Channel Islands 32. Described as robust and seakindly, we set out to find out more about this rare boat. The 32’s story started in 1974 when Jersey-based boat builder, Silva Yates (Plastics) Ltd, introduced the Channel Islands 22. This cute and capable little

wheelhouse cruiser offered economy, with single or twin inboard diesels, a large cockpit and accommodation for two. It was designed by naval architect, Alan Buchanan, who was known for designing elegant sailing sloops. He was originally based in Burnham-on-Crouch in Essex, before relocating to Jersey in the 1960’s. The Channel Islands 22 proved very popular, and soon Silva Yates decided to ‘go larger’. They commissioned Buchanan to design a 32-foot aft cockpit, enclosedwheelhouse cruiser. The Channel Islands 32 was introduced

in 1979, it offered the economy of twin or single diesel shaftdrive, an enclosed wheelhouse and accommodation for four. A close rival at the time came from Guernsey-resident boat builder, Aquastar with its 32/33. There was also of course, the Weymouth 32 and the Nelson 32. Much like the 22, the first 32’s were built as bare shells to be completed by other boat builders in Jersey. However, we understand that soon after its launch, the company resorted to fitting them out inhouse to avoid delays. It is for this reason, together with the fact that every 32 was

built to order, that no two 32’s are likely to be the same. In 1988, Silva Yates updated the model, and it now sported a longer wheelhouse and a more pronounced windscreen eyebrow. Significant changes were also made to the cockpit, and inside there was a new wheelhouse seating layout. We

understand that 19 of this version were built. Earlier versions are easily identified by their curved-framed wheelhouse side windows, while later models sported longer, angular windows. In the 80’s the boat dealer, Ian R Driver, based in Lymington, represented Silva Yates and the Channel Islands range in the UK. In 1989, a standard 32 fitted with a single 212hp engine was priced at £46,654, with twin versions spanning a £50-60k price bracket. Sadly Silva Yates (Plastics) Ltd went to administration in early 1992, but all was not lost. The Guernsey-based boat builder, Island Marine Craft bought the moulds for the 32 and 22 and was soon offering both boats, built to order. Company owner, Ian Moxham told Motorboat Owner ‘We didn’t make many changes initially, knowing that the 32 had a good reputation for its sea-keeping qualities. The

mouldings did not leave much scope for change. We upgraded the interior joinery by introducing more rounded corners and softening the look. Later models had dark blue hulls, Corian-type worktops and upgraded interior linings.” The Island Marine Craft Channel Islands 32 was exhibited almost on a yearly basis at the Southampton Boat Show, up until 2004, and Ian recalls building 16 32’s over the last 24 years, the latest one just 5 years ago. Today Island Marine Craft will build a 32 to order, with prices starting at £209,000 if fitted with a single Perkins or Yanmar 200hp diesel engine. The company will also assist with repairs of earlier 32’s. At the time of writing the Guernseybased broker, New Horizon Yachts had three examples for sale on its books, so we hopped aboard a 1989 example to take a closer look.

Immediately you step through the door, the wheelhouse feels like a secure place to be. It is light, airy and versatile too, with seating that can be adapted for comfort while underway or at rest, all with the ability to see out and provide an additional two berths if needed. Various layouts will be seen in the wheelhouse of a 32. Most models will have the 1988 layout, comprising of single pedestal helm and navigator’s seats forward, an L-shaped settee-cum-dinette area aft, and a smaller bench seat and drinks cabinet on the opposite side. The

1989 version we boarded in Guernsey had a modified and very versatile layout. It had a single fixed base helm seat with a twin navigator’s seat opposite. The bulky nav seat flipped over to face aft (retrofitted by Island Marine Craft), creating a fourperson dinette with a removable table and a fixed two-person bench aft. Both seats had storage underneath. A much later boat, built by Island Marine Craft, had a fixed U-shaped dinette with a backless navigator seat. The company also introduced a foldaway navigator seat feature to its models, which stows under the main settee.

Two companionway steps, which are slightly biased to port, lead down to the lower forward accommodation and lobby area. Here again, you will see variations in layout between early and late models, with the galley and toilet compartment switching sides. However, the most common layout sees a U-shaped galley to port, a door to the toilet compartment on the starboard side and a door to the forward cabin. The galley is practical and has a homefrom-home feel, with everything within easy reach. A single sink sits centrally and symmetrically in the one-level worktop, and takes full advantage of the light given from the two portholes above. On your right there is a full gas oven with a concealed two-burner hob and, on the left, there is ample worktop space for food preparation with a fridge fitted below. There is plenty of storage as well, with eye level cabinets and a large storage cupboard under the sink. The toilet compartment is larger than you would expect, and offers generous headroom too. It is fitted with a sea toilet, teak shower tray, wash basin unit and a

separate shower mixer tap. There is storage under the sink, while two eye-level cupboards make great use of the cavity between the moulded compartment and the hull. The forward cabin offers a conventional V-berth, which usually converts into a double with an infill. There is a narrow wardrobe on the starboard side, and further storage under both bunks. A high escape hatch is set into the cabin roof and access to the anchor chain locker can be found in the forepeak. Traditionally the boat’s interior is fitted out with teak joinery. Whilst inside the boat it is worth examining the wood surfaces and cabin linings, particularly around the wheelhouse windscreen and side windows, for staining that could indicate leaks. It is also worth checking all the portholes, as these are often plastic, which can suffer from crazing.

The versatile and safe cockpit will seat 4-6 people, and can be fully enclosed by a canopy

The boat’s 100-gallon (approx) water tank, which is fibreglass and moulded into the hull, can be found underneath the lower lobby floor. It is worth noting that Island Marine Craft has carried out repairs to split water tanks on a few early models, so a close inspection of this area is required. On deck The boat is boarded via the slatted bathing platform and a central ladder over the transom, or from alongside via the side deck and stepping down into the cockpit. The 32 has good-wide decks with a generous slanted toerail and enclosed by sturdy, two-rung, hip-height guardrails. Step out over the cockpit coaming and grabrails run along the top of the wheelhouse and cabin roof, providing great safety when moving forward. When making your way forward to the bow you need to watch your step, as there is a centre cleat bolted into the deck that is a bit of a trip hazard, but very useful all the same. You should check the decks for stress cracking, and also for the condition of non-slip deck paint if used, as this

tends to flake through age and may need freshening up. If you are planning to venture inland, the 32 is usually fitted with a tall mast that can be modified to hinge down to the cabin roof, bringing the air draught down to approximately 2.6 metres. On Island Marine Craft boats this mast is usually stainless steel. Cockpit The 32 has a superbly safe and sunken cockpit. Early boats will have a bench seat running across the transom, with locker storage inside and open rope lockers built into the cockpit sides. Later models have a U-shaped moulding, again with storage in the form of three large lockers. Examine the inside of the locker tops as, on older boats, these may be plywood which can suffer from being out in the elements. Replacement GRP lids and locker tops are available through Island Marine Craft. Later boats also have two lockers built into the wheelhouse side coamings. Both lockers are tall enough to stow fishing rods, and the port side one also usually houses two large gas cylinders.

The U-shaped cockpit usually converts into an alfresco dining area, with a pedestal table that slots into the floor and stows neatly inside the lid of the middle locker when not in use. With a full canopy, this area becomes an extension to the wheelhouse living space. On a 1996 Island Marine Craft boat, we have seen a retrofitted full-length cockpit shelter with a full canopy enclosure, making a colossal ‘conservatory’ space. If the boat doesn’t have a canopy, be sure to check the condition of any exterior wood features, such as locker fronts and the wheelhouse door, to make sure these have been protected and maintained. The cockpit is self-draining but rain can overwhelm blocked drain holes under the locker and hatch lids. The two hatches in the cockpit floor reveal large lazarette lockers, which are ample for storing larger items such as a dinghy, outboard or portable generator. One owner even had a chemical toilet stowed down there, no doubt useful for times when the boat was dried out on Herm Island beaches.

Hull and Handling The 32 has a semi-displacement hull with a fairly deep keel and a round bilge hull shape. The boat is highly regarded for its sea keeping abilities and, with its deep keel, it’s very responsive to manoeuvre with twin or single installations. Trim tabs are often fitted to help generate lift at the stern and bring the bow down, and due to the round hull shape, these are usually mounted close together on the transom, acting like a hull extension. Traditionally, 32’s have a dark blue hull but, like the 22, paler blue hulls are not uncommon. We have also seen a 32 with a red hull. Dark and coloured hulls look stunning, but will need to be maintained and polished at least once a season to keep their lustre. Consequently, hulls may also have been painted or resprayed so it is worth examining the finish on the hull. One of the lovely characteristics of the hull is a chunky teak or mahogany spray rail that runs all the way forward along the hull. It is an attractive feature that helps deflect spray, but will need seasonal maintenance as exposure to water could

cause it to rot. A light sand and healthy coats of varnish should keep this in check. Another important and practical characteristic of the boat is its very chunky black rubbing strake or ‘D fender’. Check this for any damage, as this could prove expensive to replace. It is fairly common for these boats to have keel shoes, which help protect the keel when the boat dries out, as many do in their home waters of the Channel Islands. In 1989, Silva Yates offered a steel keel shoe and grounding legs, as a combined extra, for £749. Factoryfitted steel keel shoes were secured by a strong glue and will need to be examined carefully as replacement could prove costly and difficult. Fibreglass keel shoes can be retrofitted. Here extra layers of matting are added and shaped around the keel to form a sacrificial barrier. Engines Throughout its build, the Channel Islands 32 has been powered by single or twin shaftdrive diesel installations with a variety of horsepowers. Silva Yates boats were usually fitted with either Mermaids

or Volvo engines, while Island Marine Craft often installed Perkins Sabre engines. A 1989 UK pricelist has the base engine option as a single 216hp Mermaid Majestic priced at £46,654. Several Twin Mermaid options follow, with 130hp Turbo Merlins (£51,266), 135hp Mariners (£54,250), 200hp Turbo Fours (£55,606) and 185hp Mistrals (£56,691). Listed next are three twin Volvo options, 130hp TAMD31A’s (£54,250), 150hp TMD41A’s (£58,319) and 200hp TAMD41A’s (£60,065). Island Marine Craft offered two twin options, 135hp and 225hp, the most popular being the 225hp Perkins Sabre M225Ti’s, and three single options, 135hp, 225hp and 265hp. So what sort of speed should you expect to get? The Channel Islands 32 will offer numerous top speeds of 12-25 knots. Fitted with its original twin 200hp Mermaids the boat should achieve 2022 knots and a cruising speed of 16-18 knots. Equally a boat fitted with twin 200hp Volvo TAMD41’s should be capable of 20 knots and will cruise happily at 17 knots. With the later 225hp M225Ti Perkins Sabre engines, you should expect

a top speed of 24 knots and a comfortable cruising speed of 18 knots. With single installations ranging from 135-265hp, you should expect top speeds of 12-20 knots and cruising speeds of 9-15 knots respectively. Running twin-engine boats at cruising speeds you should expect to use approximately 17-20 litres an hour. Single versions are popular as they provide the best balance of speed and fuel economy. Equally these boats will also happily run all day long at economical displacement speeds of 8-10 knots. Re-engining is not uncommon. The 1989 version we viewed in Guernsey had been fitted with a pair of 250hp Yanmar 6LPDTE’s, giving a top speed of 25 knots and a cruising speed of 20 knots. We have seen a 1988 version that was re-engined in 2010 with twin 180hp Volvo Penta D4s, giving a top speed of 19 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots. Engine access is via several hatches in the wheelhouse floor. On the re-engined 1989 boat viewed, we noted that access to the starboard engine was limited due to

the seating layout, consequently the owner had also created a useful raised platform aft of the engines for crawl access. Hinging hatchtops and latches to hold them in place made it easier still. Raw water filters, battery banks and fuel shut offs are easily accessible along the aft bulkhead of the engine bay. The boat’s one or two moulded fibreglass fuel tanks are usually aft of the engines and accessed via the two hatches in the cockpit floor. Inspect these thoroughly for potential leaks, as removal for replacement could prove difficult and costly. Crucially, Island Marine Craft fitted stainless steel fuel tanks to its boats. Conclusion The Channel Islands 32 is a blueprint wheelhouse cruiser ideal for serious coastal cruising, fishing, dayboating or even inland exploration. It’s affordable, economical and ‘tough as old boots’. Look for a well maintained example and it will serve you well for years to come.

Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a YDSA or a IIMS accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.

Fitting an AIS transceiver

YOU WILL NEED TOOLS

AIS

(Automatic Identification System) is a really useful addition to a boat electronics suite. With a receiver, you can see all kinds of information about vessels with an AIS transceiver installed (compulsory on all vessels over 300 gross tonnage and all passenger carrying vessels, but also found on many other vessels where one has been fitted voluntarily). While this is useful in all conditions, it becomes priceless when combined with radar if you find yourself caught out in fog. Add the ability to transmit your own data, and AIS becomes a great safety tool for navigating crowded waters. We have, of course, run an AIS transceiver installation feature before (see July 2015) but in that case it was an OEM plug and play NMEA2000 installation, using all modern Raymarine kit and a matching VHF aerial splitter, and was

If you aren’t lucky enough to have a suite of the very latest electronics, you don’t need to go without an AIS transceiver, as there are plenty of standalone units that will work on either NMEA2000, or the older NMEA0183 protocols. These will connect up with any AIS compatible electronics from the last 15 years or so, and the best part is that with prices coming down, you don’t have

to spend a fortune to benefit from the safety of transmitting and receiving AIS. To prove the point, we decided to upgrade our Sealine, which is equipped with an old Raymarine Classic C80 multifunction display. There is quite a choice of standalone transceivers out there, but Digital Yacht’s entry level AIT1500 offers one of the most cost effective solutions on the market at this time. It also has a built-in GPS antenna, which saves the cost and hassle of fitting a separate GPS receiver. The built-in antenna works well below decks on GRP vessels, so it can be mounted well out of harm’s way, although on a wood or steel vessel a separate external GPS antenna may be needed. Configuration is simple enough, using the included software on either a PC or Mac to input vessel information via a USB port. For the transceiver to receive and transmit, it needs connecting to a VHF aerial. Here, you have two options. You can buy and install a VHF splitter, which allows you to use your existing radio aerial for AIS transmissions, or you can install a second antenna just for the AIS unit.

I decided to go for the latter option, as it adds a bit of redundancy to the boats electronics and also avoids interfering with the radio installation and causing potential voice transmission problems. Ultimately the choice is yours and, when added up, there is little to choose between the two options when it comes to cost. Another benefit of installing a separate AIS antenna is that you can get one that is finely tuned for AIS transmissions, which should provide a slightly better service. It should be noted that when fitting a separate antenna it should be at least 2m away from the radio aerial to avoid the 25w transmissions of the radio causing problems to your AIS transceiver.

ayliner’s Element and Element XL, now known as the E5 and E6, were launched and marketed as affordable and easy to own entry points into motorboating. They offer some basic facilities for a day on the water, as well as the ability for a bit of watersports, all in a package that could be towed behind a family saloon and kept at home on the drive. They have obviously done well for Bayliner as they have increased the Element range with four new models, the E7 sportsboat, due to be launched in 2017, the two centre console models that we are testing here, the 5 metre CC5 and 6 metre CC6 and a new larger centre console, the CC7, also to be launched next year. First impressions of the CC5 and CC6 are that they appear to be eminently usable and practical boats. They may not be in quite the same league as a Boston Whaler, but you get a similarly designed package that looks perfect as a dayboat, estuary cruiser or inshore fishing platform. With the right engine they look equally useful as a watersports boat. In fact, straight off,

I will go all out and say that they appear to be a better all-round option than the original element in just about every way except, perhaps, for carrying larger numbers in comfort, where the original layout and abundance of seating trumps the CC design. So lets have a look at the two models in more detail. Element CC5 Up front, the whole bow section is raised with three lifting locker lids providing access to the good storage space that this provides. Our particular example was the fishing version, and included such things as a trolling bow motor, a forward raised

fishing seat and rod storage lockers in the cockpit sides. The forward most locker is separate from the other two, so is perfect as an anchor locker. The other two, one on either side, are just good sized general purpose lockers, unless you opt for the trolling motor where the port side locker is given over to the electrics and controls for the motor. The area aft of the raised foredeck and the helm console can be filled in to create a large lounging area or, with this, there is a single forward facing seat in front of the console. This position is actually a very comfy place to be in underway, as it has a pair of perfectly braced grabrails, one on either side, and you can brace your feet against the upright of the raised bow section. The only downside will be the lack of protection that will result in a full-on wind in your face experience and, on a choppy day, a certain amount of spray too. The helm console is pretty much slap bang in the middle of the boat and is small enough to allow easy passage all the way around it. In keeping with the Element philosophy it is a simple arrangement with a steering wheel and throttle control, Mini style large round speedo with built in voltmeter, an optional separate fuel gauge for the 68 litre fuel tank and a five way electrical control panel with a spare ‘accessory’ circuit for any additional kit you may wish to add. As standard, the boat doesn’t even come with a compass, but despite the console’s small size, there is plenty of space to fit some navigational kit, including a decent sized multifunction display and VHF, should you so wish. I may be being picky, but if the boat is going to come with such limited instrumentation I would happily sacrifice the speedo/volt meter dial and replace it Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

The helm console is basic, functional and identical on both models, with ample storage

with a tacho and trim gauge, arguably two much more useful instruments. The helm is protected by a good sized wraparound plastic screen and this is framed with a good sturdy stainless steel structure that provides good handholds not just for the helm, but also for crew making their way past. On this subject, there are some bow rails that rise just level with the console and go all the way forward on both sides, unless you opt for the fishing package, where the port one stops short to allow the mounting of the trolling motor. On each side of the console there are three rod holders, and inside the helm console there is a huge storage locker that can be accessed via a locker door on the aft end of the console, or by lifting up the ‘suicide seat’. post, rather than a seat, which is located almost on the transom. While it is just about possible to squeeze two on here, the helm is really only suited to a single person. Additional crew, if they don’t want to sit in the bow, have the option of taking one of two low down seats either side of the helm. These seats are actually rather clever as, with their back rest folded down, they are part of a large flat transom area with a non slip surface to allow easy access to the two-part bathing platform, either side of the engine. up, you have two seats that are nice and low to offer a feeling of security while seated. These seats are, however, exposed to the wind and, if you are sitting on the windward side of the boat, you should also expect to get quite a bit of spray. These two seats also have lifting bases that reveal two more large storage lockers beneath, the starboard one of which houses the engine start battery. In between the two aft seats, directly behind the helm leaning post, there is a large locker with a drain. This is designed as a live bait well for fishing, with a seawater pump and aerator, but is equally suitable as a big wet locker, or could even be used as a coolbox. One thing is certain, for a five metre boat, the CC5 is not short on storage. Aft of this, our boat was fitted with the optional watersports arch, which sits over the outboard well, and then you have a small bathing platform on either side of the engine, the starboard one featuring an inset bathing ladder, which has been thoughtfully fitted in such a way that it

Where we start to see some difference though, is behind the helm. Like the CC5 this boat also comes with a leaning post, but because there is a little more space to play with, this one can also act as a seat, if required, and also has an additional four fishing rod holders on the back. From this part back, again the CC6 is identical to its smaller sibling, apart from a backrest being fitted behind the live bait well, which can now, because there is some space in front, be used as an additional seat. In fact, this is probably the best seat of all, as you get good protection from the wind and spray behind the helm. Our test CC6 had the optional bimini installed, something that is also available on the CC5, which is a nice feature to have for those rare days where you need to get a bit of shelter from the sun, or if you plan to use your centre console in more southern waters.

Underway Our CC6 was fitted with Mercury’s new Pro XS 115hp outboard and boy did it fly. With a top speed of over 37 knots, the CC6 jumped up onto the plane and felt like a sportsboat. It may be the same basic hull as all the other elements, but for some reason the CC6 felt like a different boat. It turned just as well, but only ventilated if pushed really hard. The bow lifted a little, which was enough to change the characteristics of the ride enormously. Like other Elements, the CC6 can also be a wet boat. There just seems to be something in the way that the hull interacts with the water that creates a lot of spray, and it doesn’t take much wind for that to end up inside the boat. Having said that, the CC6 is, without doubt, the driest Element I have tested. It was also the most fun and the best handling with zero torque steer, and impeccable steering and throttle manners. Being slightly longer, meant it was also slightly better than the CC5 in a head sea and, with some lift of the bow possible, it was also a nicer experience with the waves behind us.

Conclusion Once again, Bayliner have pulled it off. They have brought to market a pair of small starter boats that are genuinely affordable. What’s more they are even better than the original Elements, and I think even more practical. I love the hull colours, the CC5 is available in white and yellow, the CC6 in white, black, red and two shades of blue. If ever there was a testament to the ability of these little boats it was during our sea trials in Croatia. We were being transferred from one test place to another onboard a 50ft sailing cat, and the seas were horrendous.

I looked out and said to my colleague, we are not going to have any boats to test when we get there, as I would not be out in this in my own 28 footer, let alone the Elements. I was wrong. When we arrived, both boats were waiting for us. The guys driving looked a tad wet, and the odd bit was being screwed back on, but I can’t ever remember being so impressed as when I saw the CC5 and CC6 in port that day having made the passage under their own steam. So, with four boats in the Element range, and another two coming soon, the biggest problem is going to be which one to buy. The CC5 is a good little boat, but without any hesitation I would say it is

worth saving a little harder and going for the CC6, it really is the best of the current bunch and takes the Element range from simple boats to get people on the water cheaply, into a really good starter boat for watertsports, fishing or day cruising.
