have just returned from the Berlin Boat Show where we announced the winners of the 2017 Best of Boats awards (see pages 8-9). I have tested many of the winners and shortlisted boats and can tell you that they really are a great selection. One of the many great things about this job is that I get to visit a variety of overseas boat shows, and it is the one thing that I would continue to do even if I found

Paul Fareham bought a neglected Fairline and turned it into a cruiser to be proud of
in February, they are not just boats shows, they are great destinations and weekends away in their own right. With 167 shows annually around the world, I am sure you can find an excuse to add one to your diary. None of this detracts from our own shows of course, Southampton and London are two events that I have attended since I was a lad, and will continue to long into the future and, for those who want something a little closer to home, these two shows, together with our growing regional events, should cover all bases. London this year will be running for only five days, including just a single weekend, so I am certain it is going to have a good buzz about it and, despite Excel’s myself in different employment. NEWS Red diesel: UK Government has re-affirmed its ‘supportive stance’ say RYA In its involvement and effort to update boaters with the latest on the use of red diesel in the EU, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has reported that the UK Government has recently reaffirmed its ‘supportive stance’ on the availability of waterside diesel for recreational boating. During November, the RYA was informed that Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) had lodged its defence with the Court of Justice of the European Union of Case 503/17. The RYA explain ‘The Court of Justice of the European Union case is about marked fuel being supplied for propelling private pleasure craft in the UK. If the UK were forced to change to unmarked white diesel for recreational craft at the waterside, it is likely that suppliers would find it difficult to make the significant investment required to install additional tanks and pumps for unmarked white diesel. The crux of the matter is ensuring the continued availability of diesel for the leisure boating community.’ ‘The European Commission has taken action against the UK pursuant to Article 258 of the Treaty on the functioning of the European Union as it considers that, by allowing the use of marked fuel for the purposes of propelling private pleasure craft, the UK has failed to fulfill its obligations under Council Directive 95/60/EC of 27 November 1995 on fiscal marking of gas oils and kerosene. According to the RYA, the European Commission indicated its intention to commence infraction proceedings against the UK in July 2011. In May 2013 the European Commission formally requested that the UK amend its legislation “to ensure that private pleasure boats such as luxury yachts can no longer buy lower taxed fuel intended for fishing boats” and issued a reasoned opinion to the UK Government, which HMRC indicated its intention to challenge in July 2013. As a result, in July 2014, the European Commission indicated that it had decided to refer the UK to the Court of Justice of the European Union.’ The RYA went on to say that it will continue to monitor the matter, keeping boaters informed as the situation progresses. It is also urging anyone fined in Belgium for having red diesel to contact the association, via email boating. abroad@rya.org.uk. 6

UK Ship Register application now online Customers using the online UK Ship Register application process can now submit copies online along with supporting documents. The Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) is building a new vessel registration system and as part of that there is now the capacity to accept electronic applications online 24/7. The change, which applies to registrations or amendments to vessels already on the Registry, will simplify UK regulations around ship registration and save time and money for customers. The MCA advises that copies need to be legible, correctly completed and on the correct, up to date agency forms. Where customers require documents to be endorsed (such as Bill of Sales or Mortgage Deeds) this will continue to be done if the original document is sent to the Registry by post. Please note, the Registry will not endorse (stamp) any copies of documents. Certificates of British Registry will continue to be sent out to customers by post (and emailed on request). As a legal document, the original Certificate of Registry is required to be returned to the Registry once the registration is over. Swimwear made from recycled fishing nets In a partnership with animal welfare charity, World Animal Protection, and diving specialists, Fourth Element, the clothing brand Fat Face has started selling swimwear made from recycled fishing nets. Lost and discarded fishing nets, lines and traps, otherwise known as ‘ghost gear’, poses a major problem for marine life. With prices £22.95-£69.95, the Ocean Positive swimwear line by Fourth Element uses recycled Nylon from nets, which is then knitted into Lycra® fabric to create a line of bikinis, swimsuits and beachwear. NEWS Best of Boats Awards 2017 winners announced The winners of the 2017 Best of Boats Awards, known to the industry as the ‘BOB awards’, were announced at November’s Berlin Boat and Fun show in Germany. The Best of Boats Awards were launched in 2014 and its jury panel is now made up of professional boating journalists from 16 countries, Austria, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Ukraine and the United Kingdom. The jury pictured below is united by two things, their ‘profound experience as motorboat testers and a strong interest in the practical needs of active boaters’. This year, with five ‘Best for’ categories and a total of 585 boat tests carried out, the jury shortlisted 22 finalists, which were then whittled down to the five winning boats pictured. For a second year in a row, Motorboat Owner Editor and UK BOB juror, Neale Byart presented the ‘Best for Family’ award at the ceremony. The nominees for this category were, the Bella 620 C, Glastron GS 259, Jeanneau Leader 33 and the Sea Ray Sundancer 320. This year’s winner was the Jeanneau Leader 33. NEWS Poole’s South Quay Expansion nears completion On schedule to be operational from January 2018, reclamation and construction work on the £10-million expansion of Poole’s South Quay will soon be complete. The expansion will see the peninsula area to the west of the Poole Quay entrance transformed, with the quay providing longer and deeper facilities to accommodate a much wider range of commercial shipping, including cruise liners up to 200 metres, and other marine activities. The company, Cruise and Maritime Voyages, has already announced South Quay as a new cruise port for its 2018 programme, and the harbour says it has received several more enquiries from interested parties. Once finished, the new expansion will be able to receive ships of up to 1,000 passengers, with 25 cruise calls already expected in 2018, and boosting Poole’s economy.

Helly Hansen buys Musto The owners of the UK clothing company Musto, Phoenix Equity Partners, announced the sale of the company to large Dutch clothing manufacturer, Helly Hansen. Granted two British Royal Warrants, Essex-based Musto has produced a range of outdoor performance gear for over 50 years. Helly Hansen will now ‘invest in Musto’s international growth’, with its CEO, Peter Smith, continuing to lead the business.

The Finnish fibreglass boat builder, Bella Boats has launched a new aluminium range of boats called Falcon. Originally Falcon was the name given to the flagship brand for Bella Boats in 1986. Now the name has been given a new lease of life in the form of an aluminium boat collection of versatile day cruisers. The new range currently consists of a 6 and a 7-metre bowrider, the BR6 and BR7. Construction of the two models began in November and there are plans for two more models to be added in January 2018.

Jeanneau Merry Fisher 1095 NEW BOAT
The French-builder, Jeanneau has announced a new flagship for its outboardpowered, Merry Fisher range. The new 34ft Merry Fisher 1095 will make its world debut at the forthcoming Paris Boat Show in December. Marketed as a weekender and ideal family hardtop cruiser, it is set to offer accommodation for 6-8 people, with a three double cabin option and a convertible double berth in the wheelhouse saloon area. The interior also has a toilet compartment with a separate shower stall. Features include a modular cockpit, recessed sidedeck, large bathing platforms, folding co-pilot seat, sliding driver’s side door and an opening door in the cockpit coaming. It will be powered by twin outboards up to 300hp. The 1095 will be unveiled at the Paris Boat Show in Hall 4, Stand A8 on 2nd December.

NEWS Children’s playground to be built at Fambridge Yacht Haven
The marina group, Yacht Havens has announced that a new adventure play park is to be built at its Fambridge Yacht Haven site, on the River Crouch in Essex. The playground, which will be opened next spring, will include a range of equipment and apparatus for children aged 3-16 and, as expected, there is a nautical theme to the new park, with children able to scale a ship and perch in a crow’s nest. The new playground will overlook the River Crouch and the farmland around Fambridge Yacht Haven, next to the West Wick Tearoom. With very few marinas offering facilities for children, it is a fresh step from the marina operator in encouraging family boating. Marina manager, Danyal Adams, said “We want to make Fambridge Yacht Haven a great destination for boaters and visitors of all generations. We already have a wide range of facilities here, including bike hire, a café and the Ferry Boat Inn pub, but we want to attract the younger generation to start enjoying the marina surroundings.” The all-tides marina, which is set into the north bank of the River Crouch, close to the village of North Fambridge, has 220 berths for yachts up to 18m and on-site boatyard services. Fambridge Yacht Haven is part of the Yacht Havens marina group which was established in 1972 and has 8 other locations around the UK and the Netherlands.
British Motor Yacht Show 2018 dates Organisers of the UK’s British Motor Yacht Show have announced that next year’s show will be held once again at Premier’s Swanwick Marina on the Hamble on the 18th-20th May (10:30am5:30pm). Now in its sixth year, the 3-day show sees British motor yacht brands, Fairline, Princess and Sunseeker showcasing latest models, including world premieres, and a display of prestige cars, RIBS, marine equipment and luxury brands. 14

24-year-old completes 9500 mile walk for RNLI Three years ago, 24-year-old Alex Ellis-Roswell left his home in Kent to walk over 9,500 miles around the British and Irish coastlines to pay tribute to his late father and help raise money for the RNLI. This inspirational feat saw him initially setting out to walk around the British coast. However, upon reaching Scotland he decided to take on Ireland as well. Carrying all he needed in a rucksack, which included a tent to sleep in overnight, he followed coastal roads and paths and visited over 200 RNLI stations along the way. On Saturday 11th November, he reached the finish line at Minnis Bay, Kent raising a total of £65k for the charity.

NEWS Announcement from Aquastar
The Guernsey boat builder, Aquastar International, announced in late November that it will be concentrating on brokerage pre-owned sales and forward order new boat sales for the year 2018 build programme. The company said ‘The Aquastar Guernsey office is strong in the market place for reselling brokerage Aquastar motor yachts. New build orders will be planned for the mid-2018 and 2019 boating season, with planning to build in series, to be cost effective in the market.’ Opting the stance, “Bespoke byword” the Boatyard mid Manager is being replaced with working team leaders. Aquastar has been building boats for over four and half decades. Relocating to Guernsey in the early 1970’s, the company first built GRP fishing trawlers, which were claimed to be the largest in the UK, before moving onto customised pilot boats for the commercial sector. Aquastar also digressed to building 81ft, 50-ton displacement maxi yachts in the ‘80s. However, with its knowledge of the semi displacement workboat hull, it was soon venturing into the leisure motorboat market. Today its factory at Ocean Yard, near St Sampson’s, is responsible for a range of motor yachts 38-80ft and bespoke refit work. The brand also has an avid following with an Aquastar Owners Club formed in 1998. The company told Motorboat Owner that it has been outsourcing more work over the last two years, with joinery and electrical contractors who are now part of the outsourcing manufacturing team, making for ‘leaner, keener working’. The company added ‘The customers of bespoke Aquastar boats regularly plan months ahead, giving the clients time to sell their existing craft. The company will stay very active in forward order boat sales, new and brokerage and, going forward into 2018, with the new design product/model range. The workshop will see new head of teams being set in place in the New Year and models next planned for building will be the new 430 Hardtop, new aft cockpit 430 and new aft cockpit and flybridge 430 and others to follow.’

Banks Martin Beaulieu 30 NEW BOAT
The Beaulieu 30 is the latest model to be revealed by Kidderminsterbased builder, Banks Martin. Founded in 2015, the company sees the collaboration of Tony Banks and Paul Martin, who bring knowledge of working for three of the big UK boat builders, and a workforce from the old UK Sealine factory. The Beaulieu 30 is a ‘chameleon’ cruiser that is set to offer 2-4 berths in a spacious interior with large cabin windows and an open-backed wheelshelter. It will be powered by twin Volvo Penta D3 diesel sterndrives giving a top speed of 31 knots and a cruising speed of 24 knots. The 30 will make its debut at the London Boat Show in January.

The Northern Boat Show is moving to new dates, 25th-28th May and a 4-day format, because the Mersey River Festival is being combined with Tall Ships Liverpool 2018, and the start of the 2018 Biscay Tall Ships Regatta. T
he Berlin Boat Show, or ‘Boat and Fun Berlin’ to give it its proper name, was the venue for this year’s Best of Boats awards ceremony (see pages 8-9), but it would have been silly not to have a look around the show while I was there and, in doing so, I turned up a few gems. The Berlin Boat Show may play second German fiddle to Düsseldorf, but that doesn’t make it any less worth visiting. Spread over 14 halls, Berlin is most definitely geared towards the motorboat fraternity, with 510 of the 580 boats exhibited being of the power driven variety. Among the highlights for me were first views of the new Jetten 42, the Greenline
39 and the Glastron 200D, but just as interesting were the numerous boats that haven’t made their way to our shores, including one or two oddballs and lots of really affordable little cruisers. Following on is our run down of some of the more interesting exhibits. Boats aside, Berlin is, of course, also a fascinating city to visit and with the boat show incorporating a comprehensive classic boat exhibit, a hall dedicated to used boats and even a compact car show it might be worth putting November 22-25th 2018 in your diary and taking a long weekend city break to Berlin. You don’t even need to tell you partner there is a boat show on. MBO

The Futura 36, from Cobra Yachts, may not have been the prettiest boat at the show, but it packed a great deal into its length and, with a single shaft drive engine of between 29hp and 370hp, could be an affordable inland or coastal cruiser.

Winterising: Domestic water system I have just been reading your November issue and my attention was drawn to your article about winterisation and in particular part two, which concerned the domestic water system. Rather than drain down, have you come across a product called Freezeban? This is simply poured into the fresh water tank and flushed through the system. It is pink so you see when it has flushed through. Although on the container label it states that calorifiers should be bypassed, I have spoken to the manufacturer and they assured me that for many years boat owners have run it through various heat exchangers, with no ill effects. The product is essentially Propylene Glycol which is found in many food products. I like the idea of flushing through, it is easier and gets everywhere in the system. Obviously when re-commissioning a good flush through with clean water would be required. I would appreciate your views on this? Excellent online magazine by the way, I enjoy reading it. I own a Hardy 32 which I keep at MDL Marina, Shamrock Quay in Southampton. Clive Watkins Editor replies: Hi Clive, yes I have heard of Propylene Glycol used in this way, it is often referred to as non-toxic antifreeze, although you should avoid consuming it. Personally I prefer to go with the drain down method to avoid the lengthy flushing process in the spring, and also because I may use the boat mid winter, and re-draining it afterwards is easier and cheaper than flushing and re-treating, but propylene glycol is definitely an alternative to draining. Freezeban, made by Camac Ltd based in Wigan doesn’t seem to be listed on the Camac website anymore. However, we found it’s still available via the UK online chandlery, Force 4. Lee Sanitation also offer a similar product called LeeFreeze, as do Starbrite, with their -50°C Non-Toxic Antifreeze.

I have been a reader of Motorboat Owner for several years now and I am very impressed with the content and presentation. We are moving from the South Coast to Huntingdon and have sold our Beneteau Swift Trawler 34. We are looking at buying a boat for the river and so far identified the Viking and Shetland boat builders. Do you have any boat reports for the Viking 26 or 275 models, or for the Shetland 27? We tested the Viking 24 in the March 2014 issue and also the 275 in the January 2016 issue, but unfortunately we have not covered the 26 as yet. Outboard fresh water cooling
I read with interest the recent question regarding outboard fresh water cooling. I’m based in Western Australia and have a 30ft Powercat 3000 Cabriolet with twin Suzuki DF175 four stroke outboards. The port motor has two one-inch heater hoses coming up to the transom where they feed a heat exchanger in a hot water tank. So, I do not have fresh water cooling, but once the motor is warmed up, I have hot water at the sink and shower. The question was mainly focused on heat recovery, rather than enclosed cooling. Apparently the boat manufacturer, Powercat Marine based in Queensland, Australia had cooperation and the approval of Suzuki for the modification to ensure compliance with the warranty. My boat was built in 2007 and the engines are 2006 models. The writer or anyone else requiring further details can contact me for further details. Great magazine. Dogs at boat shows
Having just read the letter on dogs at the Southampton Boat Show. I have to inform you that dogs are most welcome at the Grand Pavois La Rochelle boat show. We have a berth there and were staying onboard while at the show. Our two dogs stay on the boat regularly so are used to the pontoons and catways. We had no restriction on the pontoons providing the dogs were kept on a lead, though I doubt they would be welcome onboard the show boats, we did not try that, who would? As for providing facilities, there were none dog specific. However, the staff at refreshment outlets were happy to provide a plastic tub of water. There were also many cold water dispensers with disposable cups throughout the site for all to use. Russ Cattell Editor replies: I can understand the reason why an organiser may want to dissuade dog owners from bringing their pets to a show, but it’s good to hear that they are welcome at La Rochelle, a show that I haven’t been to, but of which I hear good things.

hat do you do if you want a slice of the champagne lifestyle, but your bank account tells you that you only have a Babysham budget? You could always follow Paul Fareham’s route and find a boat that needs a bit of TLC. Paul has been a boater for much of his life, growing up on the Isle of Wight he started dinghy sailing and, after completing a couple of RYA courses, got
his first taste of motorboats at around 15 years old, with safety boat duties for the dinghy club in Fishbourne. After some further courses, Paul developed a passion for boating, which he combined with work and started teaching RYA Powerboat Level 2 courses at a local sea school. Not content with being on the water professionally, Paul bought his first motorboat, an ex RNLI Atlantic RIB with twin two-stroke Evinrude outboards, when he was in his

early 20’s, and kept it for a year before upping sticks to leave one island for another. Arriving in the Isle of Man to further his ‘proper’ career as a paramedic, the call of the sea was never far away and he bought, with a friend, a Carver Allegra, which was fitted with a pair of converted GM V8 diesels. “This was quite a learning curve,” Paul told us. “At first the engines would not run properly but, after removing the Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

diesel pumps and having them overhauled, we finally got the boat running beautifully. Then, before we knew it, someone walked past, said they liked the boat and asked if it was for sale and before I knew it, I was boatless again”. Unsurprisingly, that status didn’t remain for long, with Paul getting back into RIBs for a while. “My next boat was an 8.5m Tornado RIB with an inboard Yamaha diesel engine, but again it was quickly sold to another passer by

who made an offer I couldn’t refuse”. Next up, Paul bought another RIB, this time a Gemini with a 130hp outboard, which was small enough to tow and would help keep mooring costs down, but that didn’t really work out. “The thing about boating here is that you can buy a small cruiser, like the Allegra, and find that the Irish Sea doesn’t often allow you to make full use of it, or you can buy a big powerful RIB, which allows you to pretty much bash through anything, but you have limited options”. This is how Paul ended up thinking about something that would combine the two. A cruiser that was substantial enough to use in the, often, unforgiving conditions,
with facilities to make the most of the time afloat. Of course, there was a third criterion. It had to be affordable. This lack of budget was one of the reasons that Paul spent around two years after selling the small RIB without a boat. “I had been past the marina many times and saw the Fairline gradually looking more and more sad. I didn’t know who owned it, or what the story behind it was, but I dropped the marina office a note to say that if the owners were looking at moving it on, I might be interested”. Two months passed and Paul heard nothing until a letter arrived advising him that the previous owner had sadly passed away and the boat would be coming onto the market. “By this time the boat was looking rather neglected, although through some enquiries, I found that the boat had been well maintained, and had quite a bit of money spent on it around 2013, including new props, some engine work and other general maintenance jobs. I had to deal with the accountant, who was executer of Paul bought a 25ft, late ‘80s Carver Allegra sportscruiser with a friend. Library image above the estate, which made negotiations a little

After a viewing, which indicated the level of work that Paul was going to have to put in to bring the boat back to spec, he made an offer. “I could not afford the market rate for a boat of this type, but the amount of neglect, and the fact that the interior had been messed about with, and much of it ripped out, meant that this
particular 36 might be the ‘big’ boat that I was looking for. If I could get it for what I thought it was worth, I could afford to put a few thousand into it, to bring it back to a decent condition, and still have an affordable boat”, Paul explains. “My initial offer was accepted, so we proceeded to the sea trial stage, where I found out that there

was a problem with one of the turbos. I offered to take the boat ‘as is’ for a reduced amount, or gave them the option of replacing the turbo. They chose the latter and a subsequent sea trial indicated that everything else on the mechanical side was in good order, so the deal was completed and I took ownership in July 2016”. While the engines and drive system may have been in good order, there were still plenty of other parts of the boat that needed work. “When I took ownership, I filled the fresh water tank and turned the pump on, only for water to spurt across the floor from a pipe that had just been chopped off when the boat’s galley was removed”. The galley on this boat had, unusually, been in the saloon and the area that is normally the galley on the port side forward, was a third cabin with bunks. “I wasn’t sure whether this boat left the factory with this configuration, but
I wanted to return the boat to the more standard two-cabin layout with the galley down below”, Paul tells us. After giving the boat a quick clean up on the outside with a pressure washer, Paul started work on the inside with what he calls the ‘dirty work’. “I pulled out the third cabin and any other job that would make a mess before starting to fit the units in the galley and the saloon area”. Paul also wanted to do something with all the dark interior wood, much of which was looking tired, stained and generally a bit grubby. “I painted the wood with Zinsser BIN Shellac based primer, which cost me about £55 per tin, to seal it and got through about seven tins. I didn’t want to loose all of the wood from the interior, so with

the doors I kept the dark wood around the edges, and covered the interior panel with a light wood effect vinyl covering for a more contemporary look”. Paul used a ‘Japanese Oak’ wood-effect vinyl, which he sourced from the UK company, Vinyl Depot. Areas like the ceiling panels were just cleaned up with a mould and mildew remover, and now look as good as if they had been replaced. The light fittings were removed, the bodies re-sprayed and the
bulbs changed for LEDs. The units in the galley and saloon, together with the worktops, were sourced from a kitchen supplies outlet, modified slightly to fit and equipped with boat style catches and stays to make sure they stay shut when underway. The galley is practical, with a fridge, sink, concealed rubbish bin and microwave, but also minimalist, with no hob or oven. To house a TV, Paul has taken a leaf out of modern

boat design, but with a cost effective DIY twist. “I made a wooden bracket to mount the TV onto, cut a slot into the worktop, and installed the TV onto a set of DIY store kitchen drawer type runners”, he explained. He then sourced a 12-volt linear actuator from an Internet auction site and now has an electrically operated TV lift that hides the TV beneath the saloon worktop when it is not in use.
With the hard furnishings in place, Paul then added new carpets and reupholstered the saloon seating with a stylish twotone, blue and white vinyl. With all of the original striped curtains in good condition, he dyed these a denim blue, to match the boat’s new colour scheme. One final touch that was needed in the saloon was new locking catches for the sliding saloon windows. These were

quite common on boats of this era, but replacements were proving difficult to find. “I was able to find stainless steel versions at around £45 each, but was then directed to the unlikeliest of places. It turns out that they are exactly the same units as were used on old Citroen 2CV cars, so I managed to source some in France for around £9 each”. Paul repeated the process down in the two cabins, the dark stained woodwork was painted, doors were wrapped and carpets replaced. These cabins, like the toilet compartment, didn’t require much else, although Paul has upgraded the toilet to a vacuum flush model and swapped the shower control unit. At the helm there was quite a bit of work required. Starting with electronics, Paul chose a Simrad Go 7, which is mounted on the flybridge, and a dedicated tablet at the lower helm. This operates as a slave to the flybridge unit, not just as a display, but with full operation. The tablet even Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd
has a dedicated Fairline logo on the home screen that just adds to the feeling that it belongs. “I have plans to possibly add a second, 9-inch Simrad screen and radar at later date”, he tells us. Fairline boats of this era often have a row of red electrical circuit switches that can date the dash. Paul has taken these out and replaced them with a compatible, labelled array of rocker switches/breakers from a company called Air On Board. The dash panels were

removed and overhauled with a carbon fibre wrap. The steering wheel and gear controls replaced for an overall effect of a helm console that looks decades newer than it is. The engine room didn’t get much attention until around December when the engines were treated to a full service,
including a coolant change and the engine room given a general clean up using traffic film remover before a new floor was installed. Like many older boats, the electrics on Riverdancer where in a bit of a mess and it took Paul a while to work out, and then sort out, the odd charging and isolating regimes for the batteries. The head was treated to a new quiet flush electric toilet

The boat came equipped with a generator and air conditioning system. The former worked fine, and just required a service and a paint job to smarten it up, but the latter required a bit of fettling, including brazing of the cooling coils in the air handling unit and re-gassing, before it could be put to use. The boat also came with a dinghy and 4hp Yamaha outboard, the latter of which looked almost new and just needed a carb clean and a new jet to
get it running. Outside, all of the cockpit and flybridge cushions are what the boat came with, although you wouldn’t know from looking at them, as they have cleaned up really well. The same applies to the cockpit canopies and the flybridge cover, which were covered in green but have again cleaned up into a very serviceable condition. Paul has added a new double helm seat, an eBay purchase that, despite

coming from Lithuania, was quite a bargain at around £150. Elsewhere on the exterior, Paul replaced the window seals, the wiper motors and blades, the rubber insert of the rubbing strake and, up at the bow, removed the wooden bowsprit and relocated the anchor winch and bow roller. “Trend were very useful for the seals,” he tells us. “I told them what boat I had, and they sent me some drawings showing the cross sections
of the possible seals that Fairline might have used back in the day. From this I could pick the right one and for around £50 I was able to replace the lot”. Finally, in March of this year, the boat came out of the water for the first time for a hull clean, antifoul, new anodes and a bit of work on the trim tabs. While it was out, the hull was compounded and the boat re-launched and ready for the summer season.

What Paul has achieved is very good. He doesn’t want to provide actual figures, but after spending around £10,000 on the overhaul, he reckons he has still spent far less on getting Riverdancer to the condition that she is in today, than he could have bought any other 36 Sedan currently on the market. He has, in fact, achieved his goal of owning a large sturdy cruiser, for the same sort of money as a much smaller sportscruiser of a similar age. In doing so, he has come to own a classic boat with a contemporary interior,

and it is not an exaggeration to say that the process has knocked years off the boat. What’s more remarkable is that he has performed the transformation in a little over a year, while holding down a demanding full time job and the usual family commitments. Before we departed, he took me out for a quick spin around a quite choppy Douglas Bay, and I can confirm that Riverdancer has lost none of her renowned sea keeping, and the 306hp Volvo TAMD61 engines sound as sweet today as they did back in 1988. Surviving Seasickness

any of us might be embarrassed to admit that we have suffered at one time from Sea Sickness. It is believed that around 90% of us affected to some degree. For some, seasickness is inevitable, and absolutely debilitating, but usually passes, eventually. There are many claimed ‘cures’ for seasickness too, from pharmacy pills and patches, to some more non-medical and unorthodox ones, such as ginger, electric shocks, even acupuncture. First and foremost, what is seasickness? Well an unfamiliar motion, such as a boat rolling in a swell, is often the culprit and the queasiness you feel is usually a result
of your body, and eyes sending different signals to your brain and more specifically your inner ear, which is vital for balance. This results in sensory confusion, causing stress levels to rise and a nauseous feeling. Unfortunately if you suffer from motion sickness you are most likely to suffer from seasickness. After prolonged periods at sea with the same motion, be it at fast or slow speeds, your brain will gradually learn to compensate and you will get your “sea legs”, but for many of us there is no such build up or training. Each of us may or may not find a solution that works for them.

What are my options? For many of us, taking a pill before or at the first signs of seasickness is the most convenient and possibly the most effective. One of the most popular with boaters in the UK is Sturgeron 15. However, such drugs aren’t effective instantly and may have side effects, so it is important to read the labels carefully before administering. Drowsiness is one possible side effect, leaving you incapable of doing or feeling up to much. Sucking ginger is a natural remedy often recommended. While this may act as a distraction and have a burning effect on your taste, it usually has no detectable effect. Acupuncture is another recommended remedy but is unfortunately not really practical while afloat. Scopoderm TTS patches have been found to work, as long as you put them on early enough. So again, unfortunately these will be ineffective if you are caught out. These should be applied, behind your ear, about 5-6 hours before setting out on a journey, or on the evening before the journey. One known side effect of these is a strange, metallic taste in your mouth. Working on your body’s pressure points, sea bands are another effective remedy for some. Again, these need to be worn prior to passage. You can also buy a watch-type device that delivers pulses to the inside of your wrist for seasickness. In practice these are shown to work for a while at first, but users believe that your brain and body gets used to it. Finally, like most things these days, there is an app for it. Nevasic is an app you listen to from start to finish, or have on in the background, and is claimed to help prevent sickness. Nevasic app is available from Google and App store. What are the signs and the triggers?
Sleepiness is often the first sign of seasickness. Some find the motion of the boat calming and may sleep for a whole passage, hence the phrase ‘rocked to sleep’. What they don’t often realize is that they may be suffering from a mild form of motion sickness. Sleep is calming for those that can. For others the frustration of trying to sleep and worrying about the possible sea conditions ‘is the weather ok’ ‘will it get worse’ ‘will I be ill?’ provokes the feeling of nausea. Hunger, warmth and tiredness can also be catalysts. Nausea leads to vomiting and, in extreme situations, this can result in dizziness, headache, paleness and cold perspiration.
Whether you are known sufferer or not, here are a few of our boating tips that might help prevent you, or your crew slipping into a despondent, slumped seasick state.
Keep yourself occupied and calm
Medical studies have shown that maintaining a positive state of mind can help offset the effects of seasickness. We believe anxiety is one of the biggest triggers. Keep breathing and don’t let your mind fill with worry. Conversation, listening to music and taking the helm are proven deterrents. Watching the horizon is often said to help the brain understand the mixed messages it is receiving, and wards off seasickness for many sufferers. For displacement cruising, getting up and wandering around, perhaps doing some maintenance, may also work for you. 40

Eat and drink The want or need for food can lead to seasickness. Packing a lunch and having it with you on deck avoids any need to go down into a warm enclosed cabin area. Failing that, having snacks such as biscuits, dry oatcakes or sweets close by may help sufferers. Try and eat well in advance before you go. This doesn’t mean shovelling a meal down your neck and slipping lines. Don’t rush, after all boating is meant to be fun. Stay hydrated. Have a bottle of still water or squash close by on passage. Taking small sips may help with the nausea, and liquids are important after being sick. Some people find that sipping carbonated water helps them. A flask of something hot may also bring comfort.
Clothing
Be comfortable and wear appropriate clothing. It is better to strip off layers when you are hot, rather than having to rummage through lockers down below for layers when you are cold. If a passage requires foul weather gear, for motorboat cruising we can highly recommend pull-on waterproof over trousers. These are great for quickness when nature calls and you need to go down below.

Stay tidy and up top
If you hear a thud of something in the cabin falling over down below, you are going to want to investigate. In good or bad conditions, you really don’t want to be tempted to tidy up down below in a stuffy cabin in a rolling sea. Equally there is nothing worse, when nature calls, than going down into what looks like a jumble sale. Watching that tin of beans rolling around, seeing your laptop upturned on the floor or, if you have an enclosed helm, the washing up crashing about in the sink. So stowing everything and keeping surfaces clear and tidy before setting off is recommended. Another thing we would recommend is making sure all the curtains are open down below, so when you do go down into the cabin, you will stay familiar with your situation and surroundings. This will also help you anticipate the boats movements.
Fresh air
Depending on the weather and type of boat, getting fresh air is important. But you must always stay warm, relaxed and comfortable. Stay away from exhaust fumes, being aware that these may be drawn back into a canopy enclosure whilst underway. Note, that like seasickness, feeling dozy or sleepy can also be an early symptom of carbon monoxide poisoning. See Carbon Monoxide guide in Jan14 issue 42

Twin diesel motorboat for £40k
Q I am struggling to find a boat with shaftdrive in my budget of maximum
£40k. I am looking for a diesel motorboat, maximum 11 metres with the ability to sleep a minimum of four in comfort. I have debated the shaftdrive/sterndrive argument, as many of the boats I like the look of, such as Fairline and Sealine flybridge models, seem to come with sterndrives, but two very experienced friends tell me to steer clear of drives and only buy a boat with a shaft. Are they correct, and if so, what boats would you recommend considering my criteria?
A Personally I like sterndrives. They are a little more maintenance heavy than
shafts, but for me their improved efficiency and flexibility wins out every time. Having said that, I fully understand where your friends are coming from. Shaft drive boats are typically easier and cheaper to maintain and have less to go wrong. If you stick with a shaft drive configuration you will limit the number of boats of the style you like, but that doesn’t mean your quest is not possible. Of the makes that you mention you could look at the shaft drive version of the Fairline Corniche. I can’t think of a Sealine that meets the budget, but a 350 or 360 Statesman would probably be the most affordable shaftdrive Sealine you will find. You could also look at a Princess 33, 330 or 35, which you might just be able to find within budget. A couple of other boats that I have seen currently for sale that would meet your criteria are a Carver 320, Birchwood 31, Bayliner 3288 and the Corvette 320. You might also be able to find a Birchwood TS340 or Challenger 340 for your budget if you are lucky. This is one quest where you would have more choice if you could go larger, with boats like the Fairline Turbo 36, Princess 37, 385 or 41 The Princess 330 was available with shafts or sterndrives. Bottom, the Birchwood TS31 coming into the mix. 44

Antifouling
Q It’s that time of year again when I
always ask myself, do I need the expense of storing the boat on the hard after antifouling or can it go back in the water straight away? Similarly, if I pay for copper coating, the boat would not even have to come out for antifouling and thus reduce costs even more. But, there is the annual argument, do modern GRP hulls need to dry out each year to reduce the chance of the dreaded ‘O’ or is this just old sailors’ tales?
A I think Osmosis is not quite the problem that it is thought to be, and with
modern boat building materials, does not seem to occur as often as it perhaps once did. We don’t leave our boat out of the water for any length of time and so far have seem no evidence that it has caused any issues. Antifouling actually works best when immersed soon after application anyway, so even if you do decide to leave the boat out for a few months, it is best to antifoul just before it goes back in, rather than when first hauled out. While coppercoat does appear to remove the requirement for an annual antifoul, and we have heard lots of good things about it, I understand that an annual scrub is still recommended, so you may still need a yearly lift. In short, I wouldn’t worry too much about leaving the boat in the water year round. Almost everyone I know does this and I can’t remember ever hearing of a modern boat with osmosis.

Is my outboard stolen?
Q I am looking at buying
an outboard for a little RIB project I have on the go. Ideally I want something around 50hp. Unfortunately, I do not have the money to buy new, as much as I would like to, so I have been trawling the usual places looking at the second hand market. My biggest concern is how to avoid buying a stolen outboard. Of course I want a bargain, but not at the expense of someone else’s loss or in any way encouraging the theft of outboards by being part of demand. What advice can you give?
A You have my utmost respect for taking this stance, as the theft of outboards is
largely encouraged by the high demand for cheap, used ones. The first thing to look for is paperwork. Does the seller have a receipt from when they bought the engine? Of course this only works if they bought it new, or maybe used from a dealer, so for outboards that are moving on to their third, fourth or more owner, you need to be a little more investigative. I have bought numerous used outboards and have always gone to the person’s home to pick it up. This not only provides a bit of certainty of who you are dealing with, but often you will see with your own eyes items that collude with their story as to why they are selling it. I recently bought a 30hp outboard from someone who said that it wasn’t big enough for their recently acquired boat. When I arrived, they had a boat on the drive with a new 50hp motor on the back. This brings me on to a second useful tip. Ask them why they are selling, how long they have owned it, where they bought it Check identification codes or serial numbers on the outboard from and maybe some info on the service history, 46

the type of boat they have used it on and how it performed. A genuine seller should have ready answers for all these questions. One of the most important things is to look for the serial number. Some outboards may have this missing for a Check online. There are stolen boat and genuine reason, but this should ring alarm outboard websites bells. If it has one, there are a couple of places you can check to see if the number has been marked as stolen. Stolen-outboards. net/en/check-stolen is a website where you can check stolen outboards against a serial number, and Stolenboats.org.uk is a website that allows victims of theft to enter the details, but can only be searched by calling 0345 0700440. You could also search boating forums, Facebook and Google, using the make and model, or even the serial number, as a search criterion. Many theft victims are being very resourceful in getting the info out there, so there is a reasonable chance of finding out if an outboard has been stolen with a few simple searches. Basically it comes down to carrying out due diligence and, if you have done all you can reasonably do, I think you should be able to grab that bargain with a clear conscience. If, however you are in any doubt then just walk away.
Going inland with twin diesels
Q I am thinking of taking my Sealine SC35 up
the Thames next year and leaving it on the nontidal part for a couple of months, probably using it most weekends to explore the river. My concern is that the 260hp D4 engines will only really be at idle while I am on the river and am concerned about bore glazing, or other damage caused by continuous low speed running. Are my engines likely to suffer any problems being used like this?
A Diesel engines do like to be under load, and long periods of idling in neutral
is definitely not good for them. Using them at slow speed for a couple of months won’t be a problem, as they will still be under load, albeit much reduced. Just give them a blast once your Thames cruise is over and all will be fine. Motorboat Owner Š Digital Marine Media Ltd

Mystery boat
Q I’ve only just joined the
readership, about which I’m quite excited, as I’ve spent the last few years renovating a 29 year old boat and making much of it up as I went along. I wish I’d found you 5 years ago. However, I’ve just got my 14-year old son into the whole renovation thing (choice of a new mountain bike or an old fishing boat for his exam results and bless him, he went for the boat). So we bought the attached on eBay and I’ve not been able to identify what it is, as there are no ID plates at all on the boat, and the previous owner didn’t know either. We’re going to brace the transom and put a 20-25hp outboard on it, but I guess the hull isn’t designed to plane. Will be interesting to see how it performs. Can anyone on your team help identify it?
A What you have there looks very much like a little sailing yacht without its mast as I can see deck paraphernalia for lines and shrouds. I’m guessing it was built maybe in the 70’s or 80’s, when there were lots of small boat builders churning out models like this. If any of our readers recognize the make or model, please do let us know. With a displacement hull shape and those little bilge keels, she is never going to plane. In that case, I suspect much of your power will be wasted if you go with a 20-25hp engine. I think you have the makings of a nice little day boat that would be perfectly happy with a 9.9hp motor. This should easily get the boat up to hull speed, which is going to be around 5 knots, and still have plenty of power in reserve. Mooring options in Southampton Water
Q I am looking for help in seeking out berthing for my boat as I might be
moving into the vicinity of the Hythe area, say from Totton downwards, and wondered if you knew anywhere in this area where I might make some enquiries. I know of the Hythe MDL Marina but that’s about all.
A Are you specifically looking along the west bank of Southampton Water/
River Test? If so, yes Hythe is the only commercial marina that you will find. There are a few other mooring options, but these all seem to come with yacht club connections such as Eling Sailing Club, Marchwood Yacht Club and Ashlett Sailing Club. I believe that the local council might also have some moorings at Ashlett too. Obviously some of these club moorings might be deep water, and some may be strictly for yachts, so you would need to make some enquiries. If you are happy to travel to the other side of the water, there is a greater choice of marina facilities, especially as you head up the Itchen River. Any of the following are worth a look, but some may have tidal restrictions, Town Quay Marina, Ocean Village Marina, Itchen Marine (02380 631500), Ocean Quay, Shamrock Quay, Saxon Wharf, Quayside Marina and Kemps Quay. There are also a couple of Drystacks on the Itchen, one at Saxon Wharf and Top, the 206-berth, MDL’s Hythe Marina on another at Drivers Wharf called Southampton Water. ith very few all-tides access harbours along the west coast of England and Wales, Pwllheli is an important safe haven, and a useful stepping-stone for passages along this spectacular stretch of coastline. Pwllheli has long associations with the marine industries of fishing and boat
building. It began life as a small fishing hamlet, which grew into an important port on the coast of Cardigan Bay. The harbour has changed shape through the years and today sees three rivers, the Erch, Penrhos and Rhydhir, redirected to unite and meander out to sea as an estuary, past a peninsula upon which sits what

remains of Gimblet Rock. Once an island, this granite rock was quarried during the nineteenth century and only a fraction of it remains today. Approaches
The harbour is accessible in most wind directions, but an approach is not recommended in strong onshore winds, east to south-westerly directions, as the sea heaps up at the entrance. When the wind is blowing offshore, you will usually find the waters outside the harbour incredibly sheltered. For example in moderate winds from the north to northwest, the wind may howl through the masts at the marina, yet remarkably you will still find flat water inside the bay, to the east of the harbour entrance. Pwllheli is set in the north east corner of Cardigan Bay and is best approached from the south west, heading towards Tremadog Bay between Port Ceriad and the reef known as Sarn Badrig, or St Patricks Causeway, which is marked at its south west tip by the west cardinal mark, Causeway. The entrance is fairly low lying so it is important to pick out the markers before proceeding in
Aberporth military test and evaluation Range area covers a large part of Cardigan Bay, so before setting out we would advise checking the latest firing information on the Qinetiq website, or by telephoning the range on 01239 813480 or 01239 813760 for recorded information out-of-hours, or by VHF on channel 11 or 16. While the harbour entrance and fairway to the marina are accessible at all states of tide, the entrance, in particular, is prone to silting and is dredged frequently below chart datum. There are three tide gauges at various points in the harbour showing the depth of water in the channel, the first of which is on No 3 starboard beacon. We would recommend, certainly on a first visit, an arrival on a rising tide. The grey granite Gimblet Rock is a distinguishing mark on this sandy stretch of coast, it rises out of the beach peninsula that cradles Pwllheli harbour and lies south west of the harbour entrance.
Staying well offshore, head towards the safe watermark, Fairway Buoy, which can be found due east of the entrance. Further along the peninsula, around to the east, there is also a distinctive cylinder-type monument on the foreshore. Once at the Fairway Buoy, turn onto a course of 294 degrees for the harbour entrance. The entrance channel is well marked by lit posts and buoys. To starboard is a rocky training wall that covers at high water, while to port is the shallow sloping sandbank marking the end of the Gimblet Rock peninsula. The tall starboard beacon No 1 marks the end of the training wall with port markers, No 2 and 4, marking the curved end of the shingle bank. Please note there is a 4-knot speed limit in the harbour. Destination starboard piles and markers up to 15. As the channel bears around to the southwest you will pass pile moorings to port. Then the channel gradually curves around to the north, and it is at this point you will see the marina. Hafan Pwllheli marina has produced a useful photo approach guide which can be found on its website. During the summer season, the beach to the north of the entrance is buoyed off with a section for swimmers. During such times there is a 4-knot speed limit off the beach too.
Where to moor
Marina visitors looking for a short stay or overnight berth should contact the marina on arrival at the entrance, or in advance, on VHF channel 80 call sign ‘Hafan Pwllheli’, or call the marina office on 01758 701219. The marina has a network of twelve finger pontoons, which are all linked with one security-gated ramp ashore. Pontoons 1-3 can be found on the inside at the southern end of the marina, adjacent to the fuel berth. While pontoons 4-12 are accessible from the main fairway. With berth numbers the same each side of each finger, the north side named A and south side B. Therefore berthing instructions

Hafan Pwllheli marina has a 50ton travel hoist, a large area for hardstanding and a pump out facility. Firm Helm Marine (01758 612251) chandlery can be found at Pwllheli Marine Centre, next the marina. Its boatyard (01758 612244) also offers lifting (25 and 40-ton cranes) and storage, repair and maintenance services. Partington Marine (01758 612808) has a chandlery and boatyard services on the Gimblet Rock peninsula. It offers repair work, a slipway service, storage and various other services. It also has a landing pontoon for customers. Llyn Marine Services (01758 612606) is the onsite Volvo Penta service agent and dealer. Bluewater Marine are agents for Yamaha and operate a small chandlery. West Coast Marine are also service agents for Volvo, Perkins, Beta Marine and Mercury. Companies on site offering park and launch and other services using the marina slipway are, Blue Water Marine (01758 614600), West Coast Marine (01758 701254), Harbour Marine (01758 701707) and Network Yacht Brokers (01758 701 222). For marine electronics services there is Rowlands Marine (01758 613193) and Ozzmarine (01248 521722). There is a Jewson builders merchant and a car shop selling batteries on North Quay and in town, West End Stores and Wilko are general hardware stores. Replacement gas cylinders can be purchased from the Marina Reception.

may well be three-fold, for example Pontoon 11, B15. There is no dedicated area for visitors, with visiting boats allocated a vacant berth according to size. As a rule, the smaller the boat, the further up, north, the berth will be. However, pontoon 3 is often used as a visitors holding area. Be aware that large areas of the harbour are shallow and dry out at low water, particularly to the north of the marina, so you are advised to stay well inside the marked channel at all times. The marina has shorepower, water, free WiFi and a coded, 24-hour access shower and toilet block located on the ground floor of the marina reception building. In the reception foyer itself you will find harbour notices and a 24-hour weather display. The marina and its peninsula site is a fantastic hub for services, with several used and new boat distributors, outboard and inboard service agents,
engineers and suppliers, park and launch services, marine electronics suppliers and chandleries on site.
Trailboating
There is only one public slipway in Pwllheli harbour and this is located on the west bank of the outer harbour. This is accessed by road via The Cob and the Morfa Garreg housing estate. Here the slipway is managed on behalf of Gwynedd Council by Total Boat Care (01758 6134365) and during the season, there is a daily self launch fee of ÂŁ10. Total Boat Care also offer assisted tractor launch and recovery at ÂŁ25. Parking here is limited and is on a first come first served basis. The slipway has a steep concrete ramp and is fairly narrow, so it is only possible to launch one boat at a time. The slipway is accessible at all states of tide, apart from on a low spring tide when the end

drop-off is exposed. Gwynedd Council stipulate that every powerboat or jet-ski needs to be registered and be displaying the appropriate licence sticker. As part of the registration, boat owners must also sign to say that they have insurance. Annual registration is £40 for boats over 10hp and £25 for under 10hp. Note that the daily launch fee is still payable on top. The council informed us that this licence fee may be waived for a single day launch, so contact them first, on 01758 704066, to confirm what is required. An annual inclusive launching permit, giving you unlimited launches at this slipway, is £140. The slipway at Hafan Pwllheli marina is for commercial use only and is used by the marina and several companies offering park and launch services on site. These includes Blue Water Marine, Harbour Marine and West Coast Marine. Such companies offer annual or shortterm packages, and day assisted launches,

There is a fairly large Spar store (open 10am-10pm daily) and an Iceland overlooking the Y Maes car park. One road back (Lower Cardiff Road) is a Lidl supermarket (open Mon-Sat 8am10pm Sun 10am-4pm) and a useful B&M Bargains store. You will find Cigyddion Pwllheli Butchers and the fishmonger and delicatessen, Pysgod Llyn Seafoods also at Y Maes. There is a large Asda supermarket on the outskirts of the town (open Mon-Sat 7am-11pm Sun 10am-4pm), which is a 15-minute walk (via the river road bridge) from the marina. Ice can be purchased from the Marina Reception.
Transport
Pwllheli is the last stop west on the Cambrian Line railway, this connects with nearby coastal towns, such as Criccieth (13mins), Porthmadog (22mins) and Barmouth (1hr 20mins), before going to Machynlleth, which has connections to Aberystwyth, Shrewsbury, Crewe, Chester, Hereford and Birmingham. You’ll find timing and ticket information on the Arriva Trains Wales website. Pwllheli bus station is between the Cob and Y Maes car park. The number 3 bus (or seasonal X3 open top bus) goes to Criccieth (25mins) and Porthmadog (40mins). For details, visit the Arriva Bus website. Pwllheli has good road connections to Cheshire, Manchester, and the Midlands, with Liverpool and Manchester airports not far away. There is a taxi rank just outside Pwllheli Station.

Launching and securing a short-term berth at the Hafan Pwllheli marina is also a hassle free way of exploring the local waters. There are plenty of opportunities for trailboaters looking to base themselves in the local area for a holiday, including countless B&B’s, self catering properties and hotels in Pwllheli. There is also The Warren Holiday Park, which is 6 miles west of the town. This offers beachfront self-catering holiday homes with a private beach and its own dedicated boat park area and slipway. For launching, there is also the pretty harbour village of Abersoch, which is well set up for the local trailboat community, with two commercial park and launch facilities, Abersoch Land & Sea and Abersoch Boatyard Services. looking to launch yourself, we would recommend using the Golf Road (Lon Golff) slipway, which is on the Main Beach. Payment for parking and launching is made at the entrance to the car park. Another good launching opportunity in the area is Black Rock Sands, which is approximately 10 miles from Pwllheli. During the high season this four-mile sandy stretch of beach accommodates up to 1000 cars on the beach at any one time and has a dedicated area for launching boats. It is £5 to launch here, which includes parking on the beach. The beach is very shallow shelving for launching and its use is not ideal in onshore winds. Where to eat & drink
You will find fish, as well as traditional Welsh lamb dishes available on menus in Pwllheli. There are also lots of tempting takeaways in town too. Whitehall (01758 614091) is a favourite eatery amongst the locals and the boating fraternity. This attractive, white-washed pub-cum-restaurant is located at the western end of High Street and serves up local ales and pub favourites, including ham, egg and chips, burgers and steaks, alongside some traditional welsh meat dishes. They also serve a Sunday Roast, with a choice of turkey, Welsh lamb or Welsh beef and have a Steak Night every Friday. Another good pub offering ales, pub grub and a Sunday roast is The Crown Hotel in High Street. Venu (01758 701571) is a trendy waterside bar, club and restaurant that overlooks the inner harbour, close to the station. It serves a real variety of dishes for lunch and evening meals, including pizzas,

Where to fill up

Language
English is widely spoken in the town but if you wanted to learn or try out some Welsh dialect, here are a couple phrases, Good morning is Bore da, which is pronounced Bor-eh Dah and Thank you is Diolch pronounced Deeolch. Also the nautical words Afon meaning river, Porth, which means cove, and Aber, which is an estuary, may prove useful.

Pwllheli is gateway to some beautiful cruising grounds. You have the Menai Strait, Anglesey and the marinas at Port Dinorwic, Bangor, Conwy, Deganwy, Liverpool and Douglas on the Isle of Man easily accessible in the north. The Milford Haven archipelago, Swansea and the Bristol Channel lie to the south and Ireland’s East Coast to the west. burgers and baguettes, as well as being a great place to grab a coffee and take in the view from its outside seating area. If you are looking for a traditional ‘fry-up’ breakfast, head to the Pen Cob, which is opposite the station. It is part of the Wetherspoons chain and has a huge breakfast menu which it serves from 8am until noon (from £3.59). The maritime-themed Mariner Bistro (01758 612245) is a good choice for families, and you’ll be enticed by its sign ‘best burger in town’. If you are looking for cake and a coffee, a light bite or lunch, head to Pili Palas (Butterflies) in Gaol Street. You are sure to be tempted by the cakes on display at the High Street bakery, Gwalia. This has a separate café area at the back for eating in. You will find several takeaway cafés and restaurants in Penlan Street, including fish and chip restaurant Avonia and Indian restaurant, Polash Balti (01758 613884). Another good fish and chip restaurant is All Ports (01766 512589) which overlooks the market square. if you have a sweet tooth, why not grab an ice cream from the ice cream parlour and sweet shop, Sugacane. Finally for those not looking to wander too far from the marina for a drink or a meal, the sailing academy, Plas Heli, has a delightful café-cum-restaurant, called The Deck on its first floor, which has indoor and outdoor seating areas offering a fantastic view out over the bay. marina. The main shopping street is High Street, which is set back into the hillside, running parallel with the waterfront promenade and railway. Here you will find a mixture of shops, cafes, pubs, boutiques, art galleries and antique sellers. A market is held every Wednesday at the car park area known as Y Maes. The market dates back to the 14th century and is now said to be the largest outdoor market in North Wales. The Tourist Information Centre, cinema and library (with free WiFi) can be found inside the Neuadd Dwyfor town hall building in Penlan Street. Pwllheli is great for walkers. There are links to the Llyn Coastal Path either side, a nature reserve to the west of the Cob and spectacular views of the harbour and coastline from the rocky hillside known as Pengarn, which is a 1-mile walk north from town. For keen golfers the Clwb Golff Pwllheli nestles behind the dunes of Pwllheli Beach to the west of the town. We recommend visiting the nearby town of Criccieth. Here the spectacular 13th century Criccieth Castle dominates the landscape on its rocky outcrop. This pretty coastal town offers a selection of cafes, restaurants and shops. Destination Hafan Pwllheli is a fantastic base to explore the coast by boat during the day and we thoroughly recommend a run across to Abersoch, which lies 5 miles southwest. Here you can anchor off, or pick up a visitor buoy (May-Sept) off Abersoch Beach. On shore there are two beach cafes, one is mid-beach, next to the slipway, and there is Mickey’s Boatyard and Beach Café at the southern end. The lovely village of Abersoch lies to the north and offers souvenir shops, boating and surfing clothing boutiques, such as Crew Clothing, several lovely restaurants and pubs, and has a picturesque drying harbour. From here you can also explore the off lying St Tudwals Islands. The west island, with the lighthouse, is owned by television adventurer, Bear Grylls and the East island, with its small chapel, was owned by writer, Carla Lane. The peninsula is fantastic for wildlife spotting. Bottlenose Dolphins are seen regularly close in shore, and you might see fluffy seal pups sunbathing on the jagged rocks of the islands. a complete guide to the best boats on the used market
Channel Islands 22 I f you are in the market for a traditionally-styled pocket wheelhouse cruiser, be it a platform for work or play, then UK builders such as Hardy, Nelson, Trusty and Seaward are bound to crop up. However, with prices lingering between the very affordable £8-£15k mark, the understated Channel Islands 22 may also fit the bill. The Channel Islands 22 was introduced in 1974 by Jersey-based boat builder, Silva Yates (Plastics) Ltd. It was designed by naval architect, Alan Buchanan, who was known for designing elegant racing yachts, and was originally based in Burnham-
on-Crouch in Essex, before relocating to Jersey in the 60’s. Working alongside builders such as Seamaster Ltd, Buchanan had become one of the pioneers in GRP yacht design in the ‘60s. With the 22, Mr Silva Yates wanted a boat for cruising the waters of the Channel Islands, and one that would also appeal to retiring sailors. The Channel Islands 22 was, in essence, a ‘miniature Nelson’, combining the rugged looks and features of a workboat, while offering comfortable interior accommodation for two down below. It had a coloured hull, a large cockpit with a helm position covered by an open-backed

wheelshelter, and was fitted with single or twin shaftdrive diesels. It appeared at several London and Southampton Boat Shows, each time with the show boat making the channel crossing from Jersey. During the ‘80s Silva Yates also enlisted the services of Lymington-based broker, Ian R Driver to represent the Channel Islands range in the UK. Initially, 22’s were built as bare shells to be completed by other boat builders in Jersey, but later, due to demand and timescales, boats were fitted out by Silva Yates themselves. It is for this reason, no two are likely to be the same. The 22’s
popularity spurred Silva Yates to go larger in 1979, commissioning Buchanan to design a 32-foot, enclosed wheelhouse cruiser for cruising further afield, the Channel Islands 32. Silva Yates went into administration in early 1992. But all was not lost, as the Guernsey-based boat builder, Island Marine Craft, bought the moulds for the 22 and 32 in 1992, and was soon offering both boats built to order. But there was a problem. Due to its lack of a self draining cockpit, the 22 did not meet new standards of the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) and, major changes to the

hull and superstructure were required in order gain a CE mark. Island Marine Craft has refitted several 22s through the years, although company owner, Ian Moxon recalls only building one 22 between 1992 and 1999. In the years that followed there were rumours that a new Channel Islands
22 moulds at Island Marine Craft in Guernsey
25, with a self draining cockpit ,was to be launched by Island Marine Craft, but unfortunately this boat did not come to fruition. Anyone visiting Island Marine Craft today is sure to notice the moulds of the 22, sat in the corner of yard. Ian Moxon told us on the day of our visit that the moulds are soon to be destroyed as they are ‘past their best’. It is believed that over 250 22s were built between 1974-1992. Significant changes during this build period included the replacement of rope fendering with a D-section gunnel rubbing strake, believed to be around 1981. We also understand that a few very early examples have a wooden wheelshelter, with a GRP hardtop becoming the norm for the rest of the build. Finally, moulds were developed for larger sections of the boat, for example a

one piece mould for the superstructure. Today this good-looking little wheelhouse is still very much loved and treasured by avid owners. Many examples are still ‘in residence’ in Jersey, Guernsey and indeed all over the UK. At the time of writing there were several examples for sale in Guernsey. We hopped aboard the last 22, built by Island Marine Craft in 1999, to take a closer look and find out more about this characterful ‘little ship’. Interior The Channel Islands 22 is essentially a 2 plus 2 berth boat. Its interior comprises of an open-plan cabin area offering two berths, plus the potential of offering two occasional berths in the cockpit. Stepping down into the cabin area, via the offset companionway door, you will find a galley unit on the starboard side, a V-berth dinette forward and a compact toilet compartment to port. There is a
surprising amount of space inside for a 22 footer, and the feeling of space is emphasized by a set of large windows each side and good headroom (5ft 8in) being achieved by burrowing the cabin sole into the hull, below the waterline. The galley unit is a good size, well equipped and usually disguised under folding and removable sections of worktop. It has a two burner gas hob and

Like many boats originating in the ‘70s, the toilet compartment was refined over the two decades, with a sink in late boats
grill (this may be gimbled), a single metal sink and a good amount of cupboard storage below. Some boats may have a Flavel full gas oven and hob. One owner converted the galley into ‘all electric’, installing a 2kw inverter and additional batteries (normally located between the engines) to power a single ring hot plate and electric mini oven on the galley top. In its dinette form, the V berth will cosily seat 2-4 people around the triangular-shaped, pedestal table. The table top slots between the berths, converting the area into a large double berth with an infill. There are lockers for
storage under each berth, the integral water tank in the centre and access to the chain locker in the bow void above. Albeit tight for headroom, the toilet compartment is fit for purpose. This compartment was modernised through the build process, with a sink and running water added to later models. Examine the windows for signs of leaks, as the seals will shrink and degrade through age. Diesel heating is a good addition to look for on these boats. One owner had a small Eberspacher system fitted, and said that this was more than sufficient for heating the interior and the cockpit as well, with the cabin door open. Overall the accommodation is certainly more than adequate and cosy for a couple for day boating, weekending and distance cruising. But, it is also big enough for ‘camping-on-water’ cruising for a young family of four with a dog, or fun days afloat with the grandchildren.

up to the bow. The decks have a thick angled toerail and are usually maintained with a coating of deck paint. The foredeck is normally enclosed by a small thigh-height pulpit rail. Ensure that this is securely rooted into the deck, inspecting for stress cracking around the bases. Be aware we have heard one instance of these stanchions being bolted through wooden blocks mounted on the deck, consequently these blocks had gone rotten and needed replacing. Newer boats might have stanchions that extend further aft, enclosing more of the deck area surrounding the cabin roof, which makes moving about on deck easier. There are also teak or mahogany grabrails mounted on the cockpit coaming, and along the roof of the

wheelshelter and cabin roof for safety. Such external wood features will need some maintenance as a result of being out in all weathers. Cockpit & helm The deep and secure cockpit takes up just about half of the boat and is partially enclosed by an open backed wheelshelter, which covers the helmsman and co-pilot. On this boat, the lack of a self draining cockpit makes a full height canopy all the more important, so ensure that this is in good condition.

It is here in the cockpit that you will see the very noticeable differences between twin and single engined models. Single engine boats have the large central engine box with a helm seat mounted on a pedestal to port and an optional fold out co-pilot seat to starboard. Twin engine models have engine boxes each side, with helm and co-pilot seats mounted on top, and additional aft facing seats moulded into these. It is notably easier to move about in the cockpit on boats fitted with twin engines. Aft, you have bench seat capable of seating four people, and under this are hatches providing access to the steering and rudder stocks. The aft seat base may slide out to create an occasional double berth cum-sunpad with an infill. Open lockers running along each side, under the deck coamings, provide support for the sunpad and usable storage space for ropes and other deck items. You will find a twobottle gas locker on the port side, doubling

as a foot stool for the co-pilot. As mentioned previously, a few of the first 22s were fitted with wooden wheelshelters. Island Marine Craft’s, Ian Moxon, told us that one such owner used their 22 mould to make a replacement GRP hardtop. We have also seen a Guernsey-based, single engine example with an enclosed wheelhouse. This particular boat had undergone a major refit in 2016. Here we saw the wheelhouse door located to starboard and a co-pilot seat mounted, next to the helm seat, on top of the engine box. Hull and Handling The 22 is essentially a semi-displacement cruiser with a fairly deep keel and a semiround bilge hull shape, which flattens off aft in order to maximise speed and lift. Hull extensions, of various shapes and sizes, are usually fitted to help generate further lift at the stern for fast cruising speeds, but generally the boat rides and
glides through the water very well. Owners state that the 22 is one of the safest, most seaworthy boats of its size. It is highly regarded for its ‘little ship’ abilities, with owners applauding its reassuring seakeeping when caught out in bad weather. It is as ‘tough as old boots’ one owner said. With its deep keel, it is

very responsive and maneuverable with twin or single installations. However, the latter is reputably not so good for steering in reverse, but as with most single engine boats you will quickly learn to use the paddle-wheel effect to your advantage. Overall it is a boat that has been designed for safe and steady cruising speeds. It is a very manageable boat when singlehanded and relatively low air draft also means it could be a used for inland cruising too. The replacement of rope fendering to a chunky D-section gunnel rubbing
strake, believed to be around 1981, is quite significant when it comes to maintenance. Rope fendering was a fairly common feature on workboats and rivals of this era, and brings a traditional feel. However, this is prone to rot, while the rubber gunnel is much easier to maintain and cheaper by comparison to replace, if necessary. Consequently, many owners have replaced original rope fendering with rubber through the years. We would still recommend examining the rubber for any damage, shrinkage or signs of perishing.

Single engine versions are usually powered by Ford Mermaid diesel engines. 80hp, pictured, to 140hp
Dark blue and mid-blue coloured gelcoat hulls are fairly common. Coloured hulls can look stunning but will need to be maintained and polished at least once a season to keep their lustre. Be aware, the hull and superstructure may also have been painted or sprayed, so it is worth examining the finish. These boats usually have an attractive teak or mahogany spray rail that runs all the way forward along the hull. Acting to deflect any rogue spray, this lovely feature will need seasonal attention, so it is important to examine the condition of this as, again, rot could be a problem here. A light sand and healthy coats of varnish should keep this in check. This spray rail may have been replaced by a black rubber D fender for practicality. With a requirement to dry out in its home waters of the Channel Islands, Silva Yates offered wooden beaching legs as an optional extra. The 22s long keel hull shape meant that even the props on twin configurations remained clear of
the ground, making it perfect for drying harbours. During the mid ‘80s, small bilge keels were also being fitted to boats with single engines, but such examples are rare. We found one such boat for sale in North Wales through Doug Edwards Yachts. Factory-fitted steel keel shoes were secured with a strong glue as an option. Be aware replacement of this could prove difficult and costly. Fibreglass keel shoes can be retro-fitted with extra layers of matting added and shaped along the keel to form a sacrificial barrier. Engines The 22 was fitted with a choice single and twin shaftdrive installations throughout its build period. The first boats to roll off the production line in 1974 were fitted with a single 65hp Dolphin Merak diesel engine. By the late ‘70s, Silva Yates had switched to marinised Ford Mermaid engines, namely an 80hp Melody engine giving 13 knots. This was followed by a 110hp Ford Merlin turbo diesel engine, giving a

cruising speed of 10 knots and top speed of 14 knots. A larger and more powerful 130hp Mermaid Turbo4 was then introduced, an engine that later evolved into 140hp. Gradually twin engine models were becoming more common, with most fitted with twin Volvo 2003T 43hp engines. These should give a top speed of 12-13 knots with 8-9 knot cruising speed. Twin BMW D50 engines also made a

brief appearance in the early years. The late 1999 example we boarded was fitted with twin 60hp Volvo Penta MD22 diesel engines, giving a 13-14 knot top speed and an 8-10 knot cruising speed. While twin engines bring a better layout in the cockpit and maneuverability, it seems the favoured engine for the boat, speedwise, is in fact the single 140hp Mermaid Turbo4. It is highly regarded as a great match for the boat, giving a top speed of approximately 17-19 knots and comfortable cruising speeds of 10-14 knots. Boats with larger single engines also tend to have a P bracket. Boats fitted with the 140hp Mermaid will either have a four blade 14 x 13 propeller or a three blade 15 x 13 prop. If you are considering a single engine boat, check that it has an auxiliary engine bracket, as an auxiliary long shaft outboard will bring added piece of mind when cruising further afield.

Sound insulation is an important factor to consider and investigate on the 22. Twin engine installations are generally regarded as quieter, while sound levels on single engine boats, such as the 140hp Mermaid, can produce quite intrusive noise readings at cruising and top speeds. As mentioned previously, on single configurations, the engine is mounted almost at cockpit deck level and enclosed by a large hinged engine box. From a maintenance point of view this is excellent, as it gives all round access. Examples fitted with twins are cocooned by two engine boxes, with each box hinging aft, again providing good allround access for maintenance. There is usually additional smaller hinged hatches under each seat, revealing the front of each engine, which is useful for day-today checks of belts and levels. Two integral fuel tanks formed part of the hull moulding in early boats and are located at the stern. Unfortunately these were prone to leaks, so a smell of diesel could indicate a problem. In
most instances these integral tanks were replaced with stainless or GRP versions, as rolled out in later models. A Silva Yates price list, dated August 1991, gives the following prices, Single Mermaid 56bhp £24,946, Single Mermaid Merlin 70bhp £26,633, Twin Volvo 2003 Turbo 43hp, £28,973 and Twin Mermaid Meteor 56hp £30,461. Used prices today tend see twin engine versions marketed higher, at over £10-£15k, with singles typically at £8-12k or just below it. We did however spot a recently-rebuilt 22 with an 80hp for sale privately in Guernsey for £12k ex VAT, so there are exceptions. Conclusion This cute classic has oodles of charm. It’s safe, sturdy and has the makings of an ideal first, or indeed last boat. It is an economical, versatile platform for inland and coastal cruising. Look for a well maintained example and you will be loathed to part with it for a very long time.
Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a IIMS or a YDSA accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.

Torqeedo Deep Blue 80 Electric propulsion for boats is a subject that seems to be increasingly aired. With more and more models being equipped with either all-electric or hybrid systems, and more manufacturers entering the electric outboard market, it would seem that electricity, as a way of propelling boats, is here to stay. One of the big names in this market is, of course, Torqeedo. We have previously tested, and very much enjoyed using one of their portable electric outboards but, despite being launched a couple of years back, we have never had the opportunity to see how their larger, fixed, Deep Blue outboards perform. That was put right a couple of months back when we were
invited to test a Merione 22LC fitted with a Deep Blue 80. The Deep Blue 80 is a 66kw motor that is said to provide equivalent power to an 80hp petrol outboard, hence the name. The motor weighs in at around 140kg, although you do, of course, need to add the weight of the batteries to that. On that subject, our test boat was fitted with a 32kWh BMW i3 battery pack, each of which weighs about the same again. The boat was designed as a commuter boat, and one of the design criteria was that it should operate efficiently, not only with internal combustion outboards, but also with an electric motor and its associated heavy battery load.

I wasn’t the first to test the boat on the day, and according to the onboard instrumentation I had about 84% battery capacity when I first boarded, so all ranges quoted are below those achievable starting with a fully charged battery. Starting off with a steady 4 knot river speed, the instruments were telling us that we were using 2.7kW with a range of 35nm. At this sort of speed the motor was almost silent and the boat tracked straight and

true. As we upped the speed, one thing became clear, the hull seemed perfectly matched for the motor. You would expect to go through an obvious transition from displacement to planing, with your bow pointing in the air and your fuel supply, or in this case battery reserve, taking a huge hit, especially in the 8-10 knot speeds in a boat of this size. That just didn’t happen with the Merione, with speed increasing smoothly and the boat transitioning to

planing without you ever really noticing. On a standard boat I suspect things would have been different, and this shows us that to really get the best out of electric propulsion, you probably need a hull designed specifically for it. The designer

was a little coy about what makes this hull special, but states that it is a planning hull ‘with a difference’, designed to be energy efficient. Moving up to around 9 knots, the motor was drawing 20kW for a range of around 10nm, and pushing the throttle all the way gave us 22 knots and a reasonably impressive range of 8nm, with the battery supplying 60kW. With this sort of power draw, heat build-up in the electrics can be a problem. Torqeedo has got around this by providing a water-cooled option to ensure that the electrics stays at, or below, 20°C. As we have come to expect of electrically propelled transport, acceleration is very brisk and noise levels are low, although at high speed they are far from silent, being more akin to standing

in a kitchen with a food blender running. So with the Deep Blue, are we a step nearer to the demise of the internal combustion outboard? Well if we are, it is a very small step. I do love the idea of electric propulsion, and I like the fact that we can now combine it with fast paced fun, but for anything more than sedate inland cruising, the endurance just isn’t there. OK, you could add another battery if you have the room and can take the weight, but that comes at a very hefty price and may only buy you an extra 10nm at fast speeds anyway. On the inland waterways, where 30+nm represents a long day on the water, I can see it working. With an eight hour recharge time, you are going to need a very long lunch, or an overnight stop, if you use more than 50% of the battery to get anywhere and that, realistically, brings the fast speed endurance down to about 5nm before you need to turn back. Do I love it? Yes. Would I want one? Realistically, only

orwegian manufacturer Marex is, perhaps, better known in the UK for their clever, and high quality, aft cabin cruisers, but they also build a pair of aft cockpit models, the 310 and 375. Can these coupĂŠ style boats compete in a market that is already packed with choice? In fact, can they even compete with their own aft cabin models? We took the flagship 375 for a test to find out. The quality of the fit and finish on this Marex, like others, is easy to spot as you board over the bathing platform. The teak laid platform, locker lids and teak handrails just seem to ooze class. The platform is a very good size and comes with two locker lids. One of these contains, as you would expect, a bathing ladder, while the other is a wet locker capable of taking a pair
of fenders. Still on the platform you will find a large deck locker with enough storage for the sort of deck equipment most of us carry, as well as a divided section that is used as a gas locker on gas equipped boats. Although our test boat was only equipped with a single Camping Gaz 907 cylinder, it was nice to see that the gas locker itself had plenty of space to upgrade to a twin cylinder

setup, including using larger cylinders, for the more adventurous and independent cruiser. The bathing platform also provides access to both side decks, although the starboard one is probably best approached from inside the cockpit. Access to the port side deck is aided by having plenty to grab hold off, although your options for this are somewhat less if the cockpit canopies are in place. On each side deck there is a large rope/fender locker on the aft end that incorporates a cleat concealed under the hatch lid. Just forward of these rope lockers there is another hatch in each of the side decks that will take another fender, meaning you can access all of your mooring kit easily from the cockpit and bathing platform. The side decks themselves are nice and wide, at around 10 inches, and thigh high guard rails that come all the way back to the cockpit, Motorboat Owner Š Digital Marine Media Ltd
together with grab rails on the wheelhouse sides and underneath the cockpit overhang, make moving forward easy and safe. The flat, wide side decks continue all the way forward, where you will find a large sunpad on the coach roof and double hatch access to the deep anchor locker. sized table. Overhead, the wheelhouse overhang goes all the way to the transom, but opens almost completely with a sliding roof section. This provides the perfect mix of open or sheltered cockpit for all weather conditions. On either side of
the cockpit, just aft of the wheelhouse doors, two small lockers open to reveal the cockpit canopy that is stored, and pulls out, like a shower curtain on a rail. This means that the cockpit can be easily fully enclosed by sliding the roof shut and

pulling the canopy out, within a couple of minutes, which is an extremely nice touch. Storage in the cockpit is plentiful, with big lockers beneath all three sides of the U-shaped seating, as well as another ‘lifejacket’ locker on the starboard side. All locker lids are held open with stainless steel gas struts, and none of them need cushions removing to gain access. Away from the seating the cockpit coaming is nice and high, making it safe for pets and children, and a solid, full height, transom door maintains the integrity of the enclosure. Two hatches in the cockpit floor lift to gain access to the engines, and the engine room is, as you would expect, tidy and well finished with reasonable access around the engines, although it looks a bit Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd
tight on the forward, gearbox end. Access into the wheelhouse is via a three-part patio door, and offers a galley and helm to starboard, with a dinette and double navigator’s seat to port. The galley is well appointed with Corian style worktop, a three-burner hob, oven, double sink and lots of storage. The fridge is located beneath the helm seat and a hatch in the floor allows access to

the top of the fuel tank. Opposite the galley is the large dinette. This will easily seat a family of four, but if you have more onboard, then the clever little stool seats, that are permanently fixed to the table legs, can slide out to take two more. The forward section of the dinette seating has a backrest that flips and lifts to create a double forward facing seat, and a sliding window on either side of the wheelhouse, and of course a large sliding roof, which locks in any position, provides all the fresh air you could need. The wheelhouse has curtains down both sides and across the cockpit doors, so evening 86

privacy is good as long as you moor bow out, as the front screen, at least on our test boat, had no option for a covering. At the helm you get a single, comfortable and adjustable seat with a lifting bolster and supportive side panels. The helm console is somewhat understated but does have room for a large single multi-function display. Each of the three sections of windscreen is fitted with a pantograph wiper blade, which provide excellent visibility forward even in rain or heavy spray conditions. Alongside the helm there is a small padded armrest that conceals a really useful ‘glovebox’ for the helmsman to keep their personal bits close to hand. damp. The shower section does not suffer for being divided off, with plenty of room to access it and shut the door behind you, a nice amount of elbow room once inside and a slatted wooden seating area. All in all, it’s a rather exceptional toilet shower compartment. One small point is that when you leave the toilet/shower, which is not en-suite to the master cabin, the door opens forward, meaning you have to squeeze around the door and shut it before venturing forward, all in a lobby area that is rather compact. Opposite the toilet is the entrance to the mid cabin. This is particularly spacious for a second cabin, with 6ft 4in headroom in a very large dressing area that two people could easily use at the same time. This

area is also kitted out with a small bench seat and an impressive array of cupboards and lockers. The berth itself is under the cockpit, so you do need to get down low to get into bed, but it is a very good size. The cabin is light and airy, thanks to two large hull windows on the port side, with opening port in between, an overhead skylight in the dressing area, an opening port to starboard and a matching one to port, where there are yet more lockers and another bench seat. In the forward cabin, the spaciousness of this boat prevails with 6ft 6in of headroom

“The ride is exceptionally smooth, quiet and refined” at the foot of the island double berth, where there is again lots of floor space to move around and get dressed. Even the space above the berth is high, and that height is carried all the way forward. The cabin is nicely fitted out with lots of storage, including a large locker beneath the aft end of the berth, and good use of nice wood finishes everywhere. Large fixed hull windows deliver lots of light and a small opening port either side, together with the overhead escape hatch, provides plenty of ventilation options. furious you buy a Lamborghini, but if you want an effortless and luxurious ride, you buy a Bentley. The 375, at least in V-drive configuration, is definitely the latter. You get a modest top speed with the most potent V-drive option, as tested, but if you want to get there quicker, you can choose the same engines on sterndrives for a reported top speed of around 37 knots. Acceleration is good, with 25 knots being reached in about 15 seconds, although lifting onto the plane is a little statelier, taking about 10 seconds. Overall the ride is exceptionally smooth, very quiet and generally rather refined. The steering is light and nicely balanced and the driving position is comfortable, both seated and leaning, with everything close to hand. If

there is one downside to the on-the-water experience, and I really could only find the one, it is that there are a few blind spots. These are at their worst when seated, lessened when leaning and can be all but eliminated when standing. The standing position requires the roof to be open with your head out of the roof, which is great for close quarters work, although you wouldn’t want to be much shorter than about 5ft 10in otherwise you may not be able to get your eye line high enough to take full advantage of this all round vista. Of course, if its raining, or even just cold, having the roof open may not be ideal. With its luxury tourer feel, it is no surprise that it loses quite a bit of speed in fast, tight turns, but again that is not what this boat is all about, and if a more ‘seat of the pants’ style of driving is what you are looking for, you will probably find the sterndrive version a very acceptable alternative. It is a comfy boat to be on and one that will eat the miles without you noticing. The comfort isn’t just restricted to the helm either. Underway, the nav seat is also a lovely place to be and, even with two sat here, it doesn’t feel tight on space. The padded bolster on the bulkhead alongside also adds to the comfort of the

person seated outboard on this seat. The 375 behaves impeccably at close quarters with the twin shaft drive configuration, and I would imagine would be just as easy to handle on stern drives. A single shaft installation would make lots of sense in this boat, and with the addition of a bow thruster, and possibly a stern thruster too, would make this version just as easy to handle, as well as being a more economical option, returning somewhere around 2mpg at cruise, compared to the twins 1.2mpg. Conclusion In case you haven’t already worked it out, we loved the 375. It’s fair to say that it is no sportsboat, but the quality of the build

and the materials used are simply first class. The refinement of the driving experience is right up there with the best and, at least for me, the coupé style works even better than the aft cabin, with plenty of space internally for the whole family, combined with a spacious wheelhouse and versatile cockpit. All in all, the 375 is a very practical boat that is safe and easy to move around, it also provides more space than a boat of this size has a right to, with fantastic headroom and generally lots of floor area in all areas. OK, all this comes at a significant price, and if you are looking for a boat of this size and style on a budget, there are other makes and models out there for you. However,

if you want one of the best sub 40ft coupé style boats on the market today, and have pockets deep enough to match your aspiration, you really should take a look at the 375.

RYA ‘Powerability’ qualification
At the Southampton Boat Show, the RYA and the Wheelyboat Trust were promoting the launch of a new disabled boating certification scheme, Powerability. ‘Powerability is an important milestone in further broadening accessibility, as for the first time disabled people will be able to undertake recognised RYA training and acquire specially developed certification in powerboat skippering.’ Director of The Wheelyboat Trust, Andy Beadsley, said “For people with a disability, it’s not just about getting on and off the boat that’s important but being able to have full control. We’re delighted to be able to support the RYA to roll out”.
