issue. I know it has its detractors, but this year’s London Boat Show had a bit of a buzz about it. Numbers may have been slightly down, and I can confirm after being there almost every day that it often seemed quiet, but it felt a whole lot better for the redesigned layout, with Sunseeker no longer cutting the show in half. The exhibitors were mostly upbeat,

with new boat orders being taken and boating services and equipment being purchased. Fairline’s absence was notable and sad, but at least there seems to be some good news coming through on that front. People often draw comparisons with Southampton, and even overseas boat shows like Düsseldorf, but it is best not to compare. London can’t compete with either of those two, Southampton for

its waterside location and mostly outdoors-friendly weather, and Düsseldorf for its sheer size and variety of exhibits. In my opinion, on a cold and gloomy January day when there is very little else boating related going on in the world, the London Boat Show brings a little bit of sunshine into my life, and really kicks off the season. I always come away and start making plans for the coming year. One of the most important is, of course, the annual Motorboat Owner Cruise in Company. You can read what we have in store on page 58. If you have never cruised in company before then trust me when I say that it is a great way to build confidence, make friends, expand your cruising area, or just simply add a whole new social element to your boating. Why not join us and find out for yourself.

NEWS Russian investors buy Fairline Boats The future of the British-based boat builders, Fairline Boats, has been secured, thanks to a deal that sees assets of Fairline Boats bought out of administration for an undisclosed sum. The new company, Fairline Yachts, is funded by two long term UK-based Russian investors, who are both highly experienced in managing and developing marine businesses and in the production of high technology products, IT and media services. It is claimed both are also passionate boat owners. Russell Currie (pictured) has been appointed as Managing Director. Russell has a background in the industry, he has been a Fairline dealer since 1998 and CEO of Fairline North Mallorca. He was also Engineering Director at Sunseeker International’s factory in Mallorca, and Chief Test Engineer at Princess Yachts International. The newly formed company will operate from its manufacturing facilities in Oundle, Northamptonshire and has invited previous employees to apply for the circa 100 jobs that will be immediately available. Russell said “we will be completing all orders for boats received by Fairline Boats, including those that have not yet started being built, as well as those that are already in production.”

Dredging work commences at Brightlingsea BHC

Brightlingsea Harbour Commissioners (BHC) have announced formal plans for a long term dredging and saltmarsh creation programme ‘designed to improve and maintain harbour depths, and regenerate the vital intertidal saltmarshes in Brightlingsea Creek’. The dredging comes as a result of lengthy consultations with organisations such as the Environment Agency, the Marine Management Organisation and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science. In order to minimise disruption to harbour users, a main harbour dredge is expected to commence in late 2016. The total cost of the dredge will be in the region of £720k. Funding of the main harbour dredge will be through a mix of BHC funds and an EU grant. In January dredging commenced at the privatelyowned Waterside Marina in the harbour. Up until recently the marina basin, which has a tidal sill, had become very silted up with many of its resident boats drying out to soft mud. The goal is to achieve a marina depth of 2 metres at low water. In 2015 the owners of the marina, put forward proposals for dredging and creating a barrier wall around it. The plans ‘were not acceptable to BHC or many harbour users’, but a plan was agreed to ensure the marina dredge becomes a ‘cohesive element and will be overseen by BHC’. The marina dredge will be funded by the marina owners. Also in January, sadly the well-respected Brightlingsea Harbour Master, Stephen Chick, The residential and visitor marina, Waterside Marina, had become very silted up over the years passed away aged 55. NEWS Peter Applegate The owner of Wroxham Marine and builder of Sheerline Motor Cruisers, Peter Applegate sadly passed away on New Years Eve, he was 63. The Norfolk boat builder had been battling a vicious type of cancer and leaves his wife, and two sons, Gary and James. Wroxham Marine is very much a family run business, and Peter and the family’s hands on approach, personal service and high build quality has earned Sheerline a great following. On the 8th of January the company launched its latest model at the London Boat Show. The new 1090HT sees a change in direction for Sheerline with a semidisplacement hull producing speeds of up to 20 knots. Peter was very much involved in the production of the boat, working alongside his son Gary, and according to a local newspaper, Peter was able to take part in its very first sea trial which took place before Christmas.

Avon inflatables back in UK This London Boat Show saw the resurrection of the Avon Inflatables brand. Now built by the company, Zodiac Nautic, its dealer BHG Marine Ltd had an Avon 340 Seasport RIB on display at the show.

Broom Boats launch new sportsboat The Brundall-based boat builder, Broom Boats has announced a new sportsboat concept. Harking back to Broom’s roots of the much-loved 16ft Scorpio, the all new V8M is an 8-metre, 26ft sportsboat that will be capable of 40 knots, ‘a compelling option for those seeking fun and thrills’. In the cockpit, the helm seats are reversible with a folding table and aft bench seat. The boat is expected to be constructed of carbon fibre and aramid composite, and fitted with a Yanmar 8LV 370hp, which will be coupled to a Rolls Royce FF270 water jet drive. Managing Director, Mark Garner said “We are very excited to introduce the concept of this boat, to test it’s market appeal and mark the next chapter in Broom’s incredible story.” 8

RNLI South West rescue 2015 statistics announced Figures released by the RNLI in January reveal that volunteer crews in the south west launched lifeboats a total of 1,485 times and rescued 1,531 people in 2015. Volunteer lifeboat crews across the 36 lifeboat stations saved a total of 90 lives and spent 9,989 hours at sea last year. The most common launches were to sailing boats (24%) followed by call outs to power pleasure crafts (19%), often in response to machinery failure. The busiest stations were Plymouth and Poole with 99 launches and Falmouth with 84 launches.

WWII vessel to be preserved The future of WWII veteran, the RML 497 The Fairmile has been secured. With lottery funding, the 111ft wooden warship, that rescued airman during the war, has been acquired by the National Museum of the Royal Navy where it will soon be on display.

NEWS Val Wyatt Marine appointed Thames Haines dealer Norfolk-based family-run, Haines Marine has announced the expansion of its UK sales network with the new appointment of Thames-based dealer, Val Wyatt Marine. In recent years Haines has worked with the UK agents Norfolk Yacht Agency and Shepherd Marine Sales, and this new appointment on the River Thames will provide a third base for customers to view new and used Haines models. Company Director of Val Wyatt Marine, Lisa Caddick, told Motorboat Owner: “We know there’s a demand for Haines on the Thames. It is a fantastic brand with values that match our own, and the quality of the boats is second to none in its class” Last year Val Wyatt Marine introduced a new ‘houseboat’ sales office. Haines Director and General Manager Justin Haines said “Their stunning waterside location in Wargrave, on the doorstep of Henley-on-Thames, is a fantastic location for boating, and the full range of Haines craft are tailor made for this environment.” A new Haines 32 Sedan is expected to arrive at the marina in February. Last year Haines announced that it was re launching its aft cabin 320 model, which was a popular boat on the River Thames.

Premier Marinas install marina defibrillators Premier Marinas has installed a defibrillator at Swanwick Marina and this is the first of eight marinas to receive this potentially life-saving equipment. The new DefibSafe defibrillator has been fitted on the wall underneath the Marina Reception, adjacent to the berth holders’ laundry facilities. Defibrillators can help resuscitate people who have suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, emitting a high-energy electric shock which can restore the heart’s natural rhythm. Premier say this example has been ‘designed to be used by virtually anyone with little or no first aid experience. The machine guides the operator through the process by verbal instructions and visual prompts, safely. 10

London Boat Show

I

n January the 62nd, 10-day London Boat Show occupied the South Hall of the ExCeL exhibition centre in London Docklands and was opened by Made in Chelsea star, Lucy Watson. Notting Hill and Dowton Abbey actor, Hugh Bonneville, also made a photocall appearance to cut the ribbon to open the Sunseeker stand. There were some

new features this year and the new Mediterranean Bay pool area in particular, with its cafe and busy programme of on the water events, seemed a hit with visitors. The beautifully renovated Project 31 took pride of place at the front of the Princess Yachts stand and was a real talking point of the show. The show saw many new motorboats

STAR LETTER

Boat alarm system We have been using Boat Warden for many years now so that I get a text message if the electricity supply goes off at our Marina berth, which happens frequently especially in the winter months. As we do not have decent mobile phone coverage at home, I usually have my mobile turned off when I’m there. Any text alerts for Boat Warden have always gone to my mobile, and my home phone, so I am covered either way. Recently however I discovered that it had stopped sending alerts to my home phone and I was quoted 184 Euro to correct the software that was causing the glitch. It seems that they are trying to get everyone to go over to an annual contract of 180 Euro using their own SIM card and using a ‘new platform protocol’. While it does sound very attractive and more streamlined that they can ‘dial in’ and correct software problems I am quite happy with my PAYG setup. I would also need to have my mobile on all the time as the new ‘Elite’ system as they call it will only communicate with smart phones, not old fashioned landlines. Therefore alas for me I feel they have priced themselves out of the market. Ingvar Svenson Editor replies: I spoke with Boat Warden at the London Boat Show and they are indeed looking to move everyone onto their monthly contract deal. In fact it is no longer possible to download the free control app, so anyone looking to change phones will have to go down that route. It is a shame when something like this happens, as for many I am sure the appeal of Boat Warden was the fact that it was contract free. For those on PAYG, they tell me you will be able to continue to use the system, as is, but won’t be able to get any software updates or security patches. I also have a Boat Warden system fitted, and think it’s a really great product, but ultimately will have to decide to either abandon it, or sign up for their SIM card. In all probability I will stick with it. The system works well and £10 per month is a reasonable price to pay for the peace of mind it brings. 14

The trials of transport For years I have taken my Evolution 30, La Dolce Vita around, by Sea, from her summer berth in Penzance Harbour, to her Winter berth at Port Pendennis Marina, Falmouth. But this year the weather has been so stormy and, with the added risk of taking on the infamous Lizard Point with no signs of a weather window in sight, I took the decision to take her around by road. The first task was to get her craned out and of course on that day it just happened to be blowing a gale. With the job done the low loader driver arrived. However, he got out his tape and proclaimed that we were too high and could not take us, so I agreed to take down the mast in howling wind and heavy rain. Nuts, bolts and washers just wanted to blow away in the wind, and time was lost retrieving them. At last, the mast was off, then out came the tape once again. “Sorry” the man said, “its still too high”, and so began the task of removing the radar dome as the heavens opened up once more. The two lowered VHF antenna’s were now the highest point of the boat and after another measure it was declared “borderline, but I will take you”. Off we went and I followed on behind in my car. It should be alright we thought, we were on a double-decker bus route all the way to Falmouth. It was going well until we came across some low overhanging trees. Unfortunately we were a tad higher than a double-decker bus. The photo was taken just half way there and we were already accumulating branches. When we finally got to our destination, poor La Dolce Vita was covered in twigs and branches and had masses of holly, berries and spiders all over her. The two antennas were also missing. An added reason for going by road was it was very cheap, £160 plus VAT. However, it cost over £200 to replace the antenna’s and I don’t know how long it will take to get out all the scratch marks in the gel coat. Lessons have been learnt! Geoff Venn Editor replies: Sorry to hear of your problems Geoff. As convenient as it is, road transport can bring its own issues, as you have found out. I hope La Dolce Vita is back in the water soon, complete with new antennas and shiny gelcoat. Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

NEWBOATS The London Boat Show saw a large number of interesting new boat launches. We paced the hall to bring you the best of the many new models for 2016

Beneteau Swift Trawler 30

PRICE FROM

£170,000

The star attraction at the show for many must have been Beneteau’s new Swift Trawler 30, and it’s easy to see why. The ST30 is available with the choice of one or two cabins, the second option forgoes the separate shower compartment and turns this into a small cabin with bunks. The show boat was the single cabin option and would be perfect for a couple with occasional guests, who could be put up on the large double that the saloon seating converts into. The single 300 or 370hp engine and semi displacement hull should provide comfortable and economical cruising, and the clever transom and aft cockpit seating design is a feature that must surely be rolled out among the rest of the Swift Trawler fleet. The slight fly in the ointment is the flybridge, which felt like it needed a bit more thought. LOA: 9.99m Beam: 3.53m Displacement: 5500kg beneteau.com

Rodman 890 Ventura

PRICE FROM

£82,560

The Rodman 890 Ventura is the first outboard powered boat the Spanish builder has brought to the leisure market. The boat has two separate berths, one in the bow and another back under the wheelhouse sole, as well as a convertible dinette in the wheelhouse. There is a separate toilet compartment below the helm and the wheelhouse contains a small galley and a very useful side access door next to the helm. Options allow the boat to be specified more for cruising, fishing or a mixture of the two, and engine options are either single or twin outboards for a total of either 300 or 400hp for speeds of up to 38 knots. In short, the Rodman is practical, functional and, if built to their usual standards, tough and seaworthy. LOA: 8.90m Beam: 2.98m Displacement: 2900kg (ex engine) www.rbsmarine.com

Quicksilver 755 Open

PRICE FROM

£39,035

A new Quicksilver is always worth checking out, as the range offers great value for money. The new 755 Open does not disappoint with a starting price below £40k. Even fully spec’d the boat show model was on offer for just under £50k. Available with a single outboard of between 150 and 300hp, the 755 Open is capable of 35 knots with a 200 Verado and 45 knots with a 300. The 755 comes with a small cabin but the emphasis is on outside living and socialising space, and of that there is plenty. Options include a full camper canopy, a cockpit galley unit with fridge and a sea toilet with holding tank. As a family day boat and occasional overnighter, the 755 would make a very cost effective alternative to something like a Boston Whaler, and that is praise indeed. The 755 is also available as a Sun Deck model.

Monterey 295 SY

It was great to see Monterey back at London after a number of years without a UK dealer. Gibbs were displaying two boats from a range that starts with an 18ft bow rider, and goes up to a 37ft sportscruiser. The boat we were interested PRICE FROM £113,418 in was the 295 Sport Yacht, which is available with a single petrol sterndrive of either 350 or 380hp. We are told there are also diesel engine options available if required. Down below the 295 offers two separate sleeping areas, a well appointed toilet compartment and a useful galley. In the cockpit there is a wet bar, lots of seating and lounging space, and a very nicely designed helm. In fact the whole boat has a touch of elegance to it, and I came away with the feeling that I was experiencing a little slice of Princess or Sunseeker style, for US sportscruiser money. NEWBOATS Interboat Intender 770

PRICE FROM

£50,950

The Intender 770 looks like the perfect package for lazy summer days on the river, and we are sure it is, but this particular boat is also capable of being a bit of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The 27, 33, 42 or 52hp engines will all push this family dayboat along at whatever speed is comfortable, or allowed, but choose one of the larger engine options, particularly the 170hp unit, and the 770 will prove its RCD C rating by taking on the coast at speeds of up to 25 knots. The 770 has a separate toilet compartment up in the bow, and comes as standard with a forward spray hood, rope fendering, electric fridge, sink and real teak in the cockpit. Options include a full cockpit enclosure, blue hull colour, bowthruster and electronics packages including onboard entertainment. LOA: 7.70m Beam: 2.80m Displacement: 2500kg www.valwyattmarine.co.uk

Four Winns Vista 255

PRICE FROM

£86,364

The new Four Winns Vista 255 sits almost alone in a market that used to be hotly contested by numerous builders, the 25ft sportscruiser sector, but that doesn’t mean they have rested on their laurels, and have continued to innovate and improve upon the breed. The 255 has a square bow that allows the cabin to retain a decent beam all the way forward, and the headroom inside is simply fantastic for a boat of this size. It has the standard four berth accommodation with two in the bow and another two under the cockpit, separated from the cabin with a curtain. The cockpit has some versatile seating along the port side that allows you to convert it from a fore and aft sunlounger into an L shaped bench. It also has a nice wet bar and a stylish helm with a dashboard that wouldn’t look out of place on an upmarket sports car. LOA: 7.67m Beam: 2.55m Displacement: 2801kg www.fourwinns.com

LONDON BOAT SHOW SPECIAL

Shetland 245

PRICE FROM

£44,950

At every boat show there is always one boat that takes us by surprise, and this year at London it was the Shetland 245. The reason we were taken aback was simply by how much space there was down below on this 24 footer. The word ‘Tardis’ gets banded about all too frequently, but this is one boat where its use is justified, as it honestly feels like you are on a thirty footer once inside the cabin. This may be down to the almost three metre beam that carries along way forward, or simply because it is open plan, but we doubt there was another boat at the show that, pound for pound, could match the 245 for onboard space. The 245 also boasted features you might not expect to find on a ‘budget’ boat. Corian worktops, soft closures on the galley units, and woodwork with carefully matched horizontal grain to name just a few. Outboard engine options range from 25hp up to 150p, with the standard fit being 40-60hp. There also appears to be inboard diesel options courtesy of Yanmar 30 and 45hp units. LOA: 7.50m Beam: 2.93m Displacement: 2000kg (ex engine) www.shetlandboats.co.uk

Sheerline 1090 Hardtop

The 1090 is a bit of a departure from the norm for Sheerline. A 300hp Volvo D4 will propel this semi displacement hull, with its RCD B rating, at speeds of up to 20 knots, making it perfect for PRICE the inland boater who likes to go tidal, or even FROM £223,522 the fully fledged coastal boater. Other options include a 220hp Volvo D3 or a 150hp Nanni T4. Onboard there is accommodation for four in two separate cabins fore and aft. The bow cabin has scissor berths to allow the option of two singles or a double. The galley is huge and the toilet compartment very spacious. The cockpit has three forward facing seats and a large dinette aft, all protected under a hardtop with electrically operated opening roof. NEWBOATS Delphia 800 Escape

PRICE FROM

£87,239

Delphia has been building boats in Poland for 25 years, but only now are we seeing some of their motorboat range in the UK with Norfolk Boat Sales exhibiting the 800 and the 1050 Escape models at London. Both models are designed for inland use and the 800 comes with a UK friendly wheelshelter, and offers a very affordable entry into family boating. With two separate cabins down below, a separate toilet/shower room and a good size saloon and galley, the Delphia 800 comes with a single 21hp Nanni N3 engine and wide sidedecks to help your crew move safely and easily around the boat. The boat really suits the coloured hull option, and another option worth considering is the large panoramic starboard window that provides a great view out from the lower dinette. Honda Marine are bringing the Galia range into the UK and were exhibiting the three model hardtop range at London. The 600 starts at just over £26k, there is a 660 starting at around £34k and the top of the range 750 that we are looking at here. Galia boats are the small boat range from Polish builder Galeon, and as such seem to have inherited build quality and many components from its larger sibling. The stainless steel all looks nice and chunky and the Galeon embossed cleats wouldn’t look out of place on a 35 footer. The 750HT is available with single or twin outboards, Honda of course, up to a total of 300hp. Inside there is a separate toilet compartment, which is unusual in that it offers about seven foot of headroom courtesy of quite a big step down. It also has a large vee-berth forward, a separate dinette in the wheelhouse and what looks to be a very usable little galley. Galia boats are also available in Open, Middle Cabin, Cruiser and Sundeck ranges. LOA: 7.64m Beam: 2.74m Displacement: 2300kg (ex engine) www.honda.co.uk/boatpartners

NEWBOATS Cormate 24 Sportmate Supermarine & T27 Supermarine

PRICE FROM

£60,980

We knew these boats were going to be at London but were still surprised and 24 Sportmate somewhat blown away to see them in PRICE the flesh. Developed by Hydro Design of FROM £98,670 Norway, a company perhaps better known for their offshore race boats, it is no surprise to find that the Cormates are all about performance. With the largest engine option of 600hp, the T27 is said to achieve 70 knots. Both boats come with racing style throttles T27 and helms that look perfectly designed for fast cruising, but there is more to these boats than that. They ooze quality and even have some practical features such as a separate toilet compartment on the 24 Sportmate and a two-berth cabin with toilet and sink on the T27. They are not cheap boats, but when you look at them as a genuine alternative to boats such as Windy, Draco or Boston Whaler Vantage, they start to look very good value for money indeed.

Outboard Warden

Boat Warden’s new Outboard Warden looks like a useful bit of kit to protect high value outboards, jet ribs, dinghies or even boat trailers. Fixed to the item it is to protect, the Outboard Warden will send alerts if the item is moved out of range of its base station. It will also alert if it is removed from the item. If the item does get stolen, it can be tracked using GPS data. Both parts of the unit are wireless and work with internal batteries that are said to last for months between recharges. A low battery status is alerted via SMS to your mobile phone. The system uses a dedicated SIM card that comes with a £10 per month subscription.

This may look like a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist, or at least a problem that is already solved by oars, but the Free Wheeling hand operated outboard looks like a fun bit of kit that is apparently fairly effortless to use, and which can also steer. If it does away with the need for going backwards when rowing, we think it could be a winner. Price £125 bhg-marine.co.uk

Sonishaft

Ultrasonic antifouling has been around a while now and, along with traditional antifouling paints, offers a useful way of keeping your hull critter free. Unfortunately prop shafts and props are often another matter. With paints often not sticking to them, props and shafts can quickly become fouled, resulting in poor performance and high fuel consumption. Sonihull, purveyors of ultrasonic antifoul protection for hulls, has just launched a dedicated product for prop shafts and propellers. Sonishaft is mounted next to your shaft inside the boat and connected to it with bushes to transmit the ultrasonic pulse to the shaft while still allowing it to spin freely. Markus Müller’s Sealines

T

he great thing about being a digital magazine is that we can reach out to all corners of the world, and in doing so we have picked up some very enthusiastic overseas readers. Probably one of our most enthusiastic has to be Markus Müller from Germany. We love a Sealine as much as anyone, but his love of boating, as well as his obsession with this British-founded, now German, brand is truly infectious.

Markus grew up in Berlin and his boating started in his teens, at the age of 17. It all began with his father, a skipper of inland cargo ships, finding and repairing an old inflatable dinghy. A small outboard motor was added and soon the family were out having a lot of fun exploring the inland waterways that surround the city. With the arrival of Markus’s sister, the family upgraded to an open sportsboat and later a Shetland 570. Markus was

30

desperate for his own boat and at the age of 31 he decided to take the plunge. He took his helmsman certificate, a compulsory qualification for German inland waterways, and shortly afterwards bought a Sealine 19 Weekender fitted with a Mercruiser 140hp petrol sterndrive. It was called Key West. Markus set about refitting the boat, replacing the cockpit and interior linings, adding a new fridge, new carpets, new Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

engine instruments, fitting a gas hob and new helm seats. However, after a very expensive repair on the engine and sterndrive in September 1995, he decided to part exchange it and bought a Sealine 218 Envoy. It was fitted with a Volvo Penta 205 HP petrol sterndrive. “What a jump in size, styling and quality” he said. “There was nothing to do to it, it was a such a nice boat”. Markus renamed it Key West. Due to a job change in 1999, Markus

sadly had to sell his beloved Key West and was back out boating with his father. “But after two years I couldn’t exist without my own boat, so I started to look for a Sealine 260 or a 270, but this model was hard to find”, he said. “But soon I found a Sealine 290 for sale.” He admits he had no knowledge of this particular Sealine, but

luckily a local 290 owner was willing to help and take him for a spin. “He showed me every single corner of his boat and since then we have become very good friends.” By May 2002 Markus was the proud owner of a 290, which he again renamed Key West. The boat was fitted with twin Volvo

AD41 200hp Diesel sterndrives. “What a wonderful boat, but the owner before hadn’t cared for it”, he explained. Despite some discrepancy on the year of construction, Markus set about making enquiries and ordering replacement fittings via Sealine in Kidderminster. “I took the chance in ordering replacement parts and was often on the phone to Sealine’s after sales department.” Here, Markus’s enthusiasm for everything Sealine didn’t go unnoticed. “To my surprise, one day an invitation arrived from Sealine for a private factory and production viewing. It was absolutely fantastic. They picked me up from the airport, invited me for lunch and showed me the whole production, with a guide just for me. I even talked to the CEO and he was very impressed with my knowledge Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

of the Sealine range. Finally I came away with a lot of Sealine merchandise.” Consequently Markus had developed a friendship with one particular guy from the after sales department, Eliot Tandy. Sadly he left the company later but Eliot had given Markus so many great tips about the 290. Markus put a lot of work into refitting and restoring the boat, polishing, adding new upholstery, a new canopy, new carpets and replacing window seals. “No one believed me that it was 21 years old.” He kept the 290 in a marina close to Potsdam and, over a period of 12 years, used it around Berlin and Brandenburg, clocking up over 5000 Km (2700 nautical miles). “One of my favourite trips is from Potsdam to the lake Müritz in Mecklenburg Vorpommern” he adds.

33

Key West tied up at Hafendorf Rheinsberg

However, after decades of owning Sealine sportscruisers, Markus was craving a flybridge. “What is a human without dreams” Markus asks. “My dream was to become an owner of a Sealine F330/F33. I love the majestic style of Sealine’s flybridge range, mostly the curved patio door, the roomy saloon and most importantly there is no canopy to erect when it rains,” he said. “I frequently looked for pre-owned ones on the Internet, but they were always way out of my budget.” By late September 2013 he had found an F330 for sale in Germany and had arranged a viewing.

Markus was again on a fact-finding mission to get a feel for this size of boat, and gather as much knowledge about it as he could. He was immediately smitten and, after a positive visit to his bank, was ready to make his dream a reality. “But in the end I didn’t buy the German F330. I had a look at the UK’s boat market and realised that there is a much wider choice of used Sealines. They also seemed in better condition and offered more value for money” he said. In April 2014 Markus sold his 290, in order to have the deposit ready for a new one, and his search began The Sealine 290, Key West

in earnest. He was directed to a used F33 lying on the Hamble and flew over three times to view the boat. Sadly it wasn’t to be and after a survey he withdrew his interest in the boat. Through his years of owning Sealines, Markus had become an avid member of the Sealine Forum, and had attended several annual Sealine Owners Club dinners, usually held in conjunction with the Southampton Boat Show. On the forum, and during these dinners, he met and conversed with many UK Sealine owners and one day a forum member in the UK sent Markus a message saying that he was looking to sell his well cared for F33. The boat was based on the River Medway in Kent, close to Chatham. “We debated a little, and finally agreed on a price we were both happy with. I extended my stay in the UK by one day after the Sealine Owners Party (in September 2014), to have a look at the boat and undertake a sea trial.” By the time Markus was making his way back to a train station. the deal was done. “I felt the luckiest

A UK sea trial was arranged and Markus takes the helm of his new F33 for the very first time

person in the world” he said. He had made the decision to leave the boat in the UK for the winter because of the ‘more gentle weather conditions than those in Germany’. During the winter months he researched transport options and booked a delivery through a German company called Glogau. “On the 21st March my new dream arrived. I was so excited and happy.” By mid April, the freshly polished and antifouled F33, this time aptly named Lead Astray, was launched at his marina in Sweetwater and,

The F33 was aptly named F33 ‘Lead Astray’. Markus keeps it at Yachthafen Scheunhornweg

with the ‘brightest smile’, Markus drove the boat to its berth. Like the Sealine 218 there was little work needed on the F33. “Depending on my budget I want to install some small LED lights into the flybridge steps, and an additional zip in the canopy for easier access to the bathing platform. I would also like to modify the TV antenna and navigation lights, to provide better bridge clearance without folding down the whole radar arch.” He keeps the boat at Yachthafen Scheunhornweg “I’ve berthed here for more than 16 years. It feels like I’m on holiday when I’m here, yet it is only one hour away by car from Berlin City.” So how is he getting on with his dream boat? We finally got to meet Markus at

the 2015 Southampton Boat Show. His beaming ‘brightest smile’, his accent and the fact he was carefully clutching a Sealine branded brochure-laden bag immediately gave him away. “The F33 is my dream come true.” He told us. He simply adores it and had already spent 10 weeks onboard so far in the first season. Are there any other Sealine models on the horizon, we asked him. “I love the Sealine T50, but this is out of reach for me. You also need to at least two crew, and I’m usually by myself ” He also mentioned that the shaftdrive Sealine F37 is another favourite of his. “Maybe in the future” he added. Going on past form, we think that ‘maybe’ is somewhat understated.

What next? Markus would consider a Sealine F37 but for the moment very content with his F33 36

HOW TO

Fixing raw water pump seals

YOU WILL NEED

E ngine driven, flexible impeller water

pumps offer a very efficient method of circulating cooling water around an engine but if they suffer from one weakness, it is the impeller shaft seals that sit inside the housing and keep water on the cooling side and, if it is shaft driven, engine oil on the engine side. Most of these pumps are equipped with a telltale hole in the pump body through which you

can usually see the shaft spinning. If one of the seals gives up, the oil or water will drip out of this hole to indicate that you have a problem. On some boats, the pump sits directly over the top of sensitive electrical items such as the alternator. The water dripping out of the pump onto these items can quickly damage them if it is not dealt with promptly, so it pays not to ignore the problem. Luckily, fixing the pump is not very difficult and the boat doesn’t need to be out of action for too long. You could, as I do, carry a whole spare pump with new seals already in place, so that if a leak occurs you just swap the whole unit over and then fix the leaking one in your own time, putting it back onboard as a spare once done. Your engine dealer should be able to sell you the parts needed to overhaul the

pump, including new shafts and bearings if these are found to be worn. Usually it’s just the seal that’s gone, and these can be sourced from any good seal supplier. As you will see from our pump, the seals are often fitted with a mild steel spring, which can quickly corrode in salt water. A likefor-like replacement can be obtained for as little as £1, but I would always suggest spending a bit more for a seal with a stainless steel spring. This is especially important if you boat in salt water. We recently experienced a leaking shaft seal on one of our Volvo Penta AD31’s. The pump may be found on many of Volvo’s AD, KAD, TAMD, AQAD, TMD and KAMD series of engines, and below is a guide showing how we fixed it. Your pump may be slightly different, but the basic principle should be the same.

HOW TO IN 15 STEPS

1

This is the telltale hole. It is usually the water seal that goes, but you could also find oil leaking from here

2

Undo the two hose clamps that fix the inlet and outlet pipes in place and remove the pipes *see note

3

Remove the pump cover and the impeller. This is more easily achieved with the pump still fixed in place

*If you have a seacock on you cooling water intake, turn it off first. If not, ensure the inlet pipe cannot fall below the water level while the pump is off, as there is a danger of flooding. Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

Undo the fixing bolts and withdraw the pump from the engine

There may be a drive boss of some description on the engine end of the shaft. Remove this and put to one side

Remove the shaft and bearing retaining circlip. If you don’t have the right tool, a pair of long nose pliers will suffice

7

8

9

The shaft and bearings can be tapped out with a mallet. If the bearings stay behind, you will need to remove them with a puller

Now, looking inside the pump body, it is easy to see the offending seal with the telling rust marks

Remove the old seal with a puller or by prising out with a screwdriver. Be careful not to damage the pump body

13

14

15

On our pump we had a spacer and an O ring between the seals. Make sure these are replaced if removed

The new seal is now pushed in place. You can use a slightly smaller socket as a drift if required

Check the shaft thoroughly for wear, and the bearings for any play or roughness. Replace if required, tapping the bearings in with a drift

16

17

18

Insert the shaft back through the bearings and seals, being careful not to damage the seals in the process

Tap the shaft and bearings all the way in and fix in place with the retaining circlip before replacing the drive boss

Job done. All that remains is to fix it back on the engine, connect up the hoses and replace the impeller and pump cover

COST £ An original OEM seal is likely to be around £5, although a simple shaft seal can be obtained from a seal specialist for as little as £1. I would suggest choosing one with a stainless steel spring, which is likely to cost around £6. I have used www. simplybearings.co.uk for these. If you need to replace bearings and shaft due to wear, a complete overhaul kit for our Volvo pump would be in the region of £100, and you will need to add the cost of new seals to that as well.

TIME TAKEN The whole job can be accomplished in a couple of hours if all goes well, but the sticking points may be removal of hoses from the pump, if they have been on for many years, and removal of the shaft and bearing from the pump body. I took the pump off when I noticed the leak, took it home and fixed it over a couple of evenings with a bit of waiting time for the postman to deliver my new seals. The pump was ready to go back on the boat on my next visit a fortnight later. Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

Sandwich, Dover, Romney and Hythe. The Cinque Port regime grouped together the ports, for defence and ship-servicing purposes. Fishing has always been another important industry for the town, and for many years oysters, a specialty of the region, have been sent to markets in London from here. The Town Hard, a large slipway on the waterfront, was built for unloading fisherman’s catches. Brightlingsea harbour became the base for building the Colne Smack, a traditional

wooden fishing sailing vessel. The Aldous Heritage Smack Dock and the disused oyster pits lie just yards to the east of the Town Hard. Walking through its streets you are sure to see glimpses into the town’s past. On the High Street there is the unique timberframed Jacobs Hall, which dates back to the 13th century, with its external brickturreted staircase. There is also the Cinque Port Wreckhouse in Sydney Street, which dates back to the 18th century and is now the home of the North London Sailing

Brightlingsea’s historic waterfront. The Town Hard is overlooked by the former Anchor Hotel

Association. The most striking building is the ornate, gabled, timber-clad Anchor Hotel on the waterfront. This splendid, cupola-topped former hotel has since been converted into flats. Today, with its sandy beaches and colourful beach huts, Brightlingsea is popular with holiday makers in the warmer months. On a sunny day, out on the visitor pontoons, you will have a ringside seat for the daily activities of the harbour. The boats moving to and fro, the launching and recovery of trailboats on the Town Hard, and of course the rise and fall of the tide, exposing the surrounding shiny mud flats which are a haven for wildlife. It is truly a great place to watch the world go by. You needn’t go far to

stock up on ships stores, as the unspoilt town centre has a lovely selection of shops selling local produce, as well as a small supermarket, cafes and pubs. Winter or summer, rain or shine, Brightlingsea is a great place to visit by boat.

Approaches

Although the mid-river visitor’s pontoons are accessible at all states of tides, we would recommend an arrival approaching high water for your first visit. You will find tidal predictions on the Brightlingsea Commissioners website. The route from northeast ports, for example Harwich (Rivers Orwell and Stour) is fairly straight forward, shadowing the coastline via the Wallett

Channel. However, from the North Sea, Thames Estuary and River Crouch, the approaches to the Colne and Blackwater are dotted with shifting sandbars, which cover at various states of tide. Whilst these are clearly marked, tidal height planning and pilotage are two very important aspects to navigating the east coast, particularly as the surrounding coastline is very low lying, which can be deceptive. Certainly if you are travelling from the River Crouch, the short cut across Ray Sand is a useful mile-saving route, best only attempted at high water. At other times, or for boat’s coming from the Thames Estuary or further south, the channel between Swin Spitway and Wallett Spitway is the best route. This takes you between two sandbanks, and is marked by a pair of safe water marks lying west of the Gunfleet Sands Windfarm. The north cardinal buoy, Knoll, lies approximately 2 nautical miles off the entrance mouths of the two rivers, the Blackwater, which runs west, and the Colne that runs north. From this buoy the first lone starboard channel marker, Eagle, should be visible to the northwest. At the next set of channel markers, NW Knoll and Colne Bar, the channel splits into two, leading off into the River Blackwater and the River Colne. The next set of markers in the Colne channel lie approximately 1.5

miles north-northwest, and in sequence are called Colne point 1 (SHM) and Inner Bench No2 (PHM). The speed limit here is 8 knots. Following the sequence of buoys will lead you between two peninsulas, the beautiful yellow banks at East Mersea (Mersea Island) to port, and the sandy low lying Point Clear to starboard. Passing through channel marker buoys No10 and No13, you will see a creek entrance just over a quarter of a mile ahead on your starboard side. Keep a good look out for cargo vessels entering and exiting the creek, these transport scrap metal to the wharfs beyond the town. Ahead you will see a tower set on a north shore surrounded by dozens of multicoloured beach huts, perching decoratively along the beach promenade. This is Bateman’s

Keep heading north towards Bateman’s Tower and the entrance to the creek is marked by the south cardinal, Brightlingsea Spit Buoy. This is the calling point and you can contact the harbour, call sign ‘Brightlingsea Harbour’ on VHF channel 68 or 01206 302200. The entrance channel is fairly narrow and bears round to the northeast. From this point a shallow sandy bar extends across the creek (approx 0.5m above chart datum), resulting in restricted tidal access at particularly low spring tides. Usually the

channel carries at least 1 metre, but check the tide tables if arriving at low tide and keep an eye on the depth. Opposite the entrance cardinal is a starboard beacon with a tide gauge that helpfully shows the minimum depth over the bar. The speed limit in the channel is 4 knots. Keep a good look out for sailing dinghies. Close to the Brightlingsea Sailing Club building, two white boards, known locally as the ‘Cricket Stumps’ line up with vertical red lines (transit 041°T). At night these are lit by two fixed red lights. Generally the deeper water can be found on the starboard side of the marked channel as it bears round due east. Viist England

Distances

Waterside Marina is to port and is surrounded by three-storey residences on piled walls

Ahead you will see a series of pontoons running northwest to southeast. The first of these is marked on the seaward end with a north cardinal fixed beacon, which is lit (quick flashing) at night. This first pontoon is dedicated to Brightlingsea’s fishing fleet. Here a welcome board displays contact details for the harbour and it is also where you will be met by a harbour launch and shown to a berth, if they are on duty. The town and waterfront of Brightlingsea is on your port side. On this side you will also see the busy town pier, which has a fairly large hammerhead and is often used by ferries and commercial vessels. Next you will see a green navigation mark, which marks the western end of the drying spit of Cindery Island. You may continue up this channel, leaving the starboard mark on your starboard side, for the fuel barge and the Morgan Marine marina and boatyard.

Where to moor

There are dedicated visitor berths at the western end of the two parallel pontoons nearest to Cindery Island. The visitors pontoons float at all states of tide. However, the inside of the southern most pontoon are residential berths, and

many of these dry out at low water. Note there is no shorepower or water on these pontoons. The Harbour Office is manned from 8am-7pm during high season (Whitsunday until the end of August), 8am-5pm low season and 8am-4pm from the 1st Nov to 31st March. If you arrive out of hours, the harbour recommend berthing in any available space at the seaward end of the northern-most pontoon of the two parallel pontoons. If there is no space you may berth on the inside, alongside another visitor, or in a suitable residential berth that is not marked ‘Back Tonight’. The harbour staff also recommend berthing with your bow facing into the tide and using shorelines

The Harbour Master operates from the Town Pier (above). Going ashore, tenders can be left tied up to the east side of the main walkway

for rafting, as the tide can run at up to 2 knots through the moorings. Water is available on the hammerhead of the Colne Yacht Club pontoon (short stay). If you are taking a tender ashore you can leave it tied to the inside of the town pier hammerhead. The water taxi operates on VHF channel 68 or by phone 07535 508537. It is £1 per person each way and this service runs from Easter until the end of October. If you are planning on eating ashore in the evening, we would recommend checking the operating times beforehand. These can be found on the Brightlingsea Harbour website. Overnight berthing fees, which include harbour dues, can be paid either to the harbour staff, who collect money on the pontoons twice a day, or at the Harbour Office. You can pay by cash, card or cheque. Discounts are available for those who wish to stay longer, and for visiting clubs with a group of five or more boats. Overnight prices are from £13 (7-metre boat). Visitors are permitted to use the newly-renovated toilet and shower facilities at the Colne Yacht Club. The facilities, located around the back

If you are looking for a walk ashore mooring, there are a limited number of visitor’s berths available at the privately owned Waterside Marina. The marina is tidal and has a sill that dries to 1m above chart datum. The marina entrance is marked by an unlit port marker and withies, and has a tidal gauge showing the depth over the sill. On the pontoons there is access to shorepower and water, and the marina is security gated. Visitors are usually directed to berths between the two starboard alongside pontoons just inside the entrance. Marina staff can be contacted on VHF channel 80 or 01206 308 709. The marina offers a short stay flat fee of £5 for up to three hours, and high season overnight rates of £2 per metre. Until recently the marina had become very silted up, with many of its resident boats drying out to soft mud at low water. However, since January dredging has been taking place and the goal is to achieve a marina depth of 2 metres at low water. The marina is quite shaded from the sun but is reasonably sheltered. There are public toilets within the Waterside Marina development, but visitors are also permitted to use the Colne Yacht Club toilet and showers. If you are visiting with a trailboat the best place to launch is on the Town Hard with launching fees payable at the Harbour Office. Here boats powered up to 75hp will pay £8 per day, and those over 75hp £20 per day. Annual launch permits are available, which represent very good

value for regular users. There is a public car park close by and trailers may be left on the hard, but be aware that this floods at high water. Brightlingsea Boat Park and Ride is also a useful facility, operating a launch and storage service with daily rates starting at £20, but you will need to pay harbour dues on top. Swapping drives

Q I am looking at buying a project boat that I can work on over the winter. The

sort of thing I have in mind is a US sportscruiser of around 24ft. I am hoping to pick one up that needs and engine and drive as I have access to a very nice Volvo Penta V6 with SX outdrive. My concern is whether the transom on a boat is designed for a particular drive, ie, do I need to look for a boat that was built with a Volvo drive or are they interchangeable?

A The transoms are not built for a certain drive, but once the hole is cut in them

for the factory fit drive, you will then have work to do to fit a drive of a different make. If your Volvo drive requires a bigger hole, then it will simply be a matter of cutting the transom out to suit. If, however, your drive needs a smaller hole, you will be looking at rebuilding the transom into a solid piece so that you can then cut your smaller hole. The SX drive uses, I understand, the same transom mount as the old OMC Cobra drive, so your engine may well slot straight into an ex OMC powered boat. Mercruiser Alpha drives require very small holes, so you should be ok with a boat originally equipped with one of these, requiring just a bit of enlarging of the cut out. Your problem will come from boats fitted with other Volvo or BMW drives, which I understand require larger cutouts, although you are not likely to stumble across too many BMW equipped US sportscruisers. So for an easy option, look for an ex OMC or Mercruiser powered boat, unless you want to add transom work to your jobs list. This boat went from an OMC drive, with its small cut out, to a Volvo DP-E drive

Trailboat to Carteret

Q Having just read January’s edition, and in

particular your feature on Carteret in France, you have successfully inspired me to visit this place. The question is, how to do it? My boat, a Fairline Sunfury, is now retired to the inland waterways, but I do own a 15ft trailer sailor, a weekender at a push. Now that would do it if I towed it there and set up in the marina as a holiday base. It would be very basic living of course but it got me thinking as to what would be the best fitted out pocket cruiser to take on a trailer if one only had a typical family saloon type vehicle.

A I love Carteret, and basing a little trailboat there for a few days would be lovely,

especially if you managed to get some nice weather for a bit of exploration outside of the harbour. The question as to which boat would be best is a difficult one. Bigger is better when spending time aboard but keeping it within the towing capabilities of an average family car does put a limit on size. Obviously perceptions of what constitutes an average family car can be quite different, but if we take a Ford Mondeo, like we used to tow our Project boat to the Thames, or its newer shaped sibling, you would be looking at a limit of 1800kg. Ideally you don’t want to be right up to this limit, especially on a long distance tow, so lets consider 1500kg to be about the limit. Our 5m Mayland weighs in at around 800kg on its trailer but this could easily creep up to 1000kg once fuel, water and equipment is added, so that allows a little bit of weight to go slightly larger for a more comfortable experience. On the used market I am thinking something from Shetland would be ideal. You have the evergreen 5.3m Family Four, which weighed about 600kg ex engine, or one of the 5.7m models such as the Kestral, Black Hawk, Saker or 570, which all come in at around 770kg ex engine. Add a trailer and a suitably sized engine and you should still be the right side of 1500kg. If you are fortunate enough to be in the market for something new, then one of the little sportsfishers, such as the Merry Fisher 605 we are testing this month (page 78), would make a great little weekender, and should still be within the Shetland Family Four and test boat towing capabilities of a large family saloon. this month, a Jeanneau MF605 Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

Replacing T5 tube lights

Q I have a number of lights on our boat

which take the T5 fluorescent tubes, and I was wondering about changing them for LEDs. Is it possible to buy replacement LED T5 tubes? Also my research has revealed that LEDs require a stable 12 volt and, although we don’t often cruise with the cabin lights on, higher voltages will occur while underway, or when on shore power with the battery charger on. I understand a higher voltage can cause problems with LED lights overheating. Is it possible to stabilise the entire leisure side of the boat electrics, to say 12.7V, with one piece of equipment? I was also wondering what the light brightness and quality of light is like compared to the original T5 tubes. The light from the existing tubes is quite soft, some LED lights are very harsh.

A You certainly can get T5 LED tubes and, depending upon the source,

stabilization is not necessarily a problem. While it’s true that some of the cheaper ones are designed to work at exactly 12v, there are others, such as this one from boatlamps.co.uk that are designed to work at between 10 and 30V. If you look on YouTube you can see videos of what happens to cheap flat rate 12 Volt LEDs when a higher voltage is put through them. Admittedly it usually takes over 15 Volts for problems to materialize, but with many chargers putting out 14.7 Volts, it may be a bit too close for comfort. You are correct in that the light output from many LEDs can be rather harsh but you can usually source LEDs in either warm white or bright white. The one I have linked to is available in both. Bright white would be ideal in a toilet compartment or galley, but for living areas you would be better sourcing a warm white version. What I would suggest is ordering a single unit and see how you feel about the colour. With regards to voltage stabilizers, while it may be possible to stabilize the voltage across the whole boat, it would be easier and cheaper to just stabilize the voltage on the lighting circuit, if you wanted to go down this route. Personally I would spend a few extra pounds on LEDs that are able to cope with a voltage variation. It may be a big initial outlay, but with circa 50,000 hour service life you should only have to do it once. LEDs will reduce onboard power demand and, although more expensive, should last many years 56

Outboard with remote electric tilt

Q Recently age has caught up with me and I have

downsized to a 23 footer powered with a 4 stroke 15HP Mariner. The engine seems ‘tired’ and I am thinking about changing it for a new one. As I am new to outboards, can you offer any advice as to which remote controlled electric tilt engine I should go for? Would an increase in HP, to say 20, be better?

A Normally, unless you have good reason not to, I would suggest sticking to the same

make of motor in a situation like this. It should help make installation easier, and may enable you to reuse items such as cables and control boxes to reduce the cost. Current 15 and 20hp Mariner outboards are both available with EHT (electric hydraulic tilt) and, like the 15hp and 20hp engines offered by Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda and Tohatsu, are based on the same engine, so there is no weight disadvantage for going up to the 20hp model. All the other engines mentioned are also available with electric tilt and, to be honest, there is very little to choose between the makes in terms of reliability, weight and cost. What may be more important is dealer support, so with little else to split the engines, perhaps go for the one with a good local dealer who you can easily call upon for warranty issues should the need arise. Whether you need the extra 5hp is up to you, but if you are happy to pay the difference then go for it. It’s rare to hear someone complain that they have too much power, but common to hear boaters wishing they had more. If you do decide to stick to a 15hp, you can also add Evinrude into the mix.

Upgrade to Raymarine C80s

Q I am looking to update the electronics on my

Princess 35, and have been offered a pair of Raymarine C80’s, which are about ten years old but newer than the Raymarine RL70’s that are currently fitted. Can these units be networked to share cartography etc?

A In short no. They can be linked through Seatalk to share some information,

but you will need to dedicate the radar to one unit only and swap the cartography card to the unit in use. If you want that generation of Raymarine kit with networking capabilities you will need to hunt around for a pair of E80’s. Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

CLASSIC CRUISERS

a complete guide to the best boats on the used market

Storebro 31 T he harsh environment and changeable weather conditions are a great challenge for the boat builders of Scandinavia, but they have learned to combine functionality, practicality, comfort and convenience, and what better builder to showcase this feat than Storebro. This Swedish brand has been around for 70 years and is well regarded for its high build standards, clever features and quality carpentry. It is also a brand that has drawn many a ‘rag and stick’ boater to power with its traditional and conservative styling.

It all began in southern Sweden in a small town called Storebro, 32 miles inland from the Baltic Sea. The Storebro shipyard was founded in 1946 by entrepreneur Ivar Gustavsson. One day this young mill worker witnessed some Estonian war refugees building a traditional wooden rowing boat. Employing these individuals he was soon manufacturing rowing and fishing boats, combining traditional Estonian carpentry skills with the use of his machinery. Ivar Gustavsson quickly realised that self-propulsion and accommodation was needed for the

Swedish archipelagos, and soon outboards and then shaftdrive engine configurations were introduced. Models became bigger, more sophisticated and more luxurious. By the early 60’s Storebro was becoming well known throughout Europe for building mahogany motorboats, with models like the elegant 28ft ‘Storo’, known as the Royal Cruiser I. ‘Storo’ was the initial Swedish range moniker, and Royal Cruiser was a name given to exported boats. With the evolvement of fibreglass, in 1969 the company re-introduced its Royal Cruiser motorboat range with a

fibreglass hull. Models like the aft cabin Royal Cruiser 34 were transformed. By the mid 1970s Storebro was manufacturing boats from GRP only. In 1975 a new fibreglass model emerged called the Royal Cruiser 31, and this was initially available in two versions using the same hull. There was the aft cockpit ‘Biscay’ model, and large open cockpit version called the ‘Adriatic’. The boats

had very different appeals. The Biscay was essentially a six-berth boat with an enclosed wheelhouse for boating in all elements, while the Adriatic was a fourberth, ‘sportscruiser’ style boat, reflecting previous models from the builder. ‘De Luxe’ versions were available with a white hull and superstructure, and were also fitted with a radar arch. The Biscay was also offered with a flybridge. A version known as the Baltic came a few years later and is said to be the result of a custom order from, the now former shipyard owner, Ivar Gustavsson. He wanted an aft cabin version of the Adriatic

and, for this, a whole new deck moulding was developed. However, the model was such a success it was added to the range, with an optional mahogany wheelshelter. The 31 was a huge success for Storebro and finally ceased production in 1992. Sadly, it was not replaced in the range, and was the last boat of its size built by Storebro. According to build records around 478 31’s were built between 1975-1992. Records also indicate that approximately 112 of these were Adriatic’s, 203 were Biscay’s and 148 Baltic’s, leaving 15 boats unidentified by version. Of the total 478 built, it is believed that only 30 Brochures from Storebro’s early years. Left, the ‘Storo’ Royal Cruiser I

were orders delivered to the UK. Very few Adriatic’s made their way into British waters. Here, dealers included Boat Showrooms of London, and later, Paul Hadley Marine Sales. High quality meant the 31 was fairly expensive at the time. Prices were based on the Adriatic, with the Baltic and Biscay versions priced by adding the various options that made the boats different. In the 1990’s, Storebro became closely tied with its fellow Swedish brand, Nimbus, and to this day it subcontracts the interiors for Nimbus and also the 21st century sister brand, Paragon. Today

Storebro produces leisure boats from 43-46ft, and also builds the Combat 90E for the Swedish military. The brand is still imported into the UK by Offshore Powerboats based in Lymington. The seat bases have large open fronted storage lockers and lifting the seat cushions reveals yet further storage, particularly the aft bench, which usually conceals a very practical sectioned tray ‘tool box’. Between the dinette and the helm bulkhead there is an open fronted wardrobe, and this provides a large shelf, ample for a TV. There is another enclosed good-sized shelf running along the back of the dinette seating. A deep wardrobe, aft of the dinette, goes down into the hull space, and again offers plentiful storage. The toilet compartment is a good size for washing and showering. It is equipped with a sea toilet, a large moulded sink unit (with shower mixer tap), cupboard, drawer storage, and a slatted removable shower tray cover.

Unique ‘Tool Box’ storage under the dinette seating

Unusually for a Scandinavian boat, the galley is located down below and not in the cockpit. The concealed galley unit incorporates a single sink, a two-burner hob and a gas oven. There is storage in the form of slide-opening cupboards behind the sink, two lockers for pan storage under the oven, drawers and a large shelved cupboard under the sink. Inside, these are sectioned off for items such as plates and cups. The unique pull-out chopping board storage above the cutlery drawer is an ingenious touch. The metal sink is sunk deeply into the worktop, and we would recommend carefully examining the wood surround for water damage. A good size fridge is located under the forward dinette seat, which is easily accessible from the galley. Moving forward, a bulkhead with two doors divides the entertaining and dining area from the boat’s forward cabin. However, to allow

light to flow through the accommodation, there is usually a window (Perspex) in the bulkhead with a curtain to offer privacy at night. It is worth noting that very early boats did not have a dividing bulkhead, and have an L-shaped dinette adjoining the V berth. The front cabin offers two bunks as a V berth, with an infill converting it into a double. The bunks appear quite stunted, but appearances are deceptive and they are actually a good length and size. The right bunk is slightly shorter, owing to the encroachment of a narrow half-height wardrobe. Like the dinette, open fronted lockers provide plentiful under-bunk

storage, but you will also note, if you lift the bunk cushions, the locker tops have ventilation holes which is another great feature seen throughout the boat. Large slanted windows to the foredeck provide light and an exceptional view out. There is also an escape hatch built into the foredeck, and a small door in the bow gives access to the anchor chain locker. The surfaces around the windows are usually vinyl lined. Sagging headlining is to be expected, but do make sure that this is not the result of window leaks. The Baltic’s aft cabin has very ‘traditional’ but practical twin bunks

the accommodation into two separate sections, which has its pros and cons. Having an entirely separate master cabin offers lots of privacy, particularly when you have guests onboard, but as there is only one toilet compartment, it does mean night time visits are inevitably via the chilly cockpit. You enter the aft cabin via a set of wooden doors with an opening GRP gas-strutted hatch top. This sunken cosy cabin is surprisingly roomy, with excellent headroom. It offers two wide single berths, with a storage/dressing table unit (sometimes a vanity unit) between them. There is also a decent sized wardrobe next to the companionway stairs. The Baltic’s two 31-gallon water tanks are located under each berth. There is also limited access to the rudder stocks and steering gear from these lockers. Baltic Cockpit and Helm Entry into the cockpit of the Baltic from

the side deck is through a rollup side screen section in the canopy. The cockpit area feels spacious, and makes good use of the boats 10ft 6in beam. The canopy and the fairly high cockpit coamings give a feeling of security, making it suitable for a family. There is seating either side of the aft cabin companionway, with both seat bases providing storage. The larger locker on the starboard side houses two Camping Gaz 907 bottles. While the boat does lack dedicated outside entertaining and dining space, with the canopy down, sun worshippers and children will love the large cushioned sunpad on the aft cabin roof. There is also just enough space in the cockpit to place a small collapsible table. At the helm, a combination of a lowprofile, unobtrusive dashboard and a very large windscreen offers excellent visibility

The cockpit offers excellent visibility, with a low profile helm and twin folding helm seats. If you are buying for coastal use, always check the navigation equipment

out. Dials and equipment are mounted on the dashboard and, on hardtop versions, the overhead bulkheads. A lovely wooden chart storage locker set into the dashboard, in front of the instruments, keeps everything neat and tidy. Folding helmsman and navigator seats hinge up from the cockpit coaming with metal stays inserted to hold them in position when required. On later boats these seats may also swivel into position, stowing in a similar fashion against the cockpit coaming for access to the engine bay below. In front of each helm seat there is a simple and clever folding wooden footrest,

which hinges down from the cockpit coaming and locks into position. Hardtop Baltics have a sliding window on either side of the wheelhouse. Unfortunately these are located a little too far forward to have your arm out while helming, but are still very useful for ventilation and communication with the crew. There are also two sun hatches in the roof to let the outside in. We would recommend a thorough inspection of the mahogany hardtop structure if fitted, both inside and out. The corner pillars in particular tend to suffer from rot. These are veneered, and sanding The sheltered wheelhouse of the Baltic is ideal for the UK. Engine access can be tricky. Our featured 1981 Baltic is fitted with Twin Volvo Penta TAMD40 diesels

Engines The 31 was available with twin shaftdrive configuration. Over the 17 year build period many different engines will have been fitted. However, it seems the most popular was a pair of Volvo Penta TAMD40 125hp diesels. Other Volvo Penta options include 106hp MD32, Hull and Handling 130hp TAMD31A, 148hp TAMD40A, In the same vein as the 34, nearly 20 years 165hp TAMD40B, 200hp TAMD41B, its senior, the 31 has a semi displacement 230hp TAMD60B and 255hp TAMD60C. hull that combines the qualities of a fine There was also around a dozen boats fitted entry at the bow, a smooth rounded chine with twin Perkins 175hp T6.354MGT deflecting water away and round bilge diesels in the mid to late 70’s. A full-length keel also of up to 22 knots, and today would be provides responsive handling and stability. happy cruising at 12-18 knots. Boats fitted with 200hp or larger engines would have had a top speed of 26 knots plus, and will still happily cruise in the low to mid 20’s. While 31’s were predominantly twin shaftdrive, it seems that there were a few exceptions. It is believed four boats were fitted with a single shaftdrive diesel, and several Adriatics and Biscays were equipped with twin Volvo AQD40 sterndrives. One particular Biscay was fitted with twin 230hp KAMD42s. Many boats will have been re-engined, so expect to find almost any engine configuration A rare, sterndrive-powered Adriatic side lockers provide further storage. With an air draft of 2.25 metres, open versions of the Adriatic and Baltic are ideal for inland cruising. Folding screens give further reduction in air draft. The Biscay, and Baltic hard top, have an air draft of 2.55 metres.

during your search. Access to the engines is via four large removable hatches in the teak effect cockpit floor. Each engine has two interlocking hatches, the aft of which have to be removed first. With very little room to manoeuvre, exposing the engines in their entirety is quite precarious and ideally a two-person job. However, it is ok if you are only working on one engine at a time. The raw water strainers are located under the forward hatches making daily checks a bit of a chore. This could be remedied by adding smaller inspection hatches in the forward hatches, something Storebro themselves appeared to do on later boats. On the Biscay, access to the starboard engine is somewhat hampered by the seating, but this is removable. Whilst in the engine bay inspect the fuel tanks, as these have been known to suffer from corrosion. Soundproofing is important on these boats, and is definitely

something to look for, and listen to, on a sea trial. You should expect around 1nmpg when running a twin diesel shaftdrive 31, and around 2nmpg for an outdrive version. Check that the engines have been regularly serviced and that there are no signs of neglect, or evidence of leaks. Conclusion We think the Baltic would make a comfortable family boat for inland or coastal cruising. There is a lot to be said for the security of an enclosed wheelhouse, therefore we would say the Biscay is more suitable for a couple cruising longer distances. You will need to keep on top of the maintenance, particularly of any woodwork, but find a well loved example and you will have a true Scandinavian classic to behold.

Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a IIMS or a YDSA accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.

tested Mirka DEROS random orbital sander

I enjoy nearly all aspects of DIY work with one notable exception, sanding. I don’t know if it’s the repetitiveness of the job, or simply that it can be a massive effort for very little reward, but when it comes to sanding I will usually try and find any excuse to get out of it. So when the Mirka DEROS landed on my desk I have to admit that putting it to the test was not high on my list of priorities. It turns out I was wrong. The DEROS was a joy to use and made sanding an almost pleasant experience. The DEROS uses a brushless motor, which reduces friction, wear and heat build up, and is also extremely compact and very light, at just 1kg. Being brushless also means the sander is to all intent and purposes, maintenance free. The controls consist of an on/off switch, a speed selector and an operational lever. This lever can work in two ways with easy switching between them. The first is that it acts as a constant speed switch with the sander running at the speed selected by the

speed buttons, which can be between 4,000 and 10,000 rpm. The other way to use this lever is as a speed controller, with the sander running faster or slower, up to the maximum speed set, depending upon how far you push the lever. For me it worked best in the first setting but it’s a nice option to have. The push button speed controls were a little more fiddly than an old fashioned mechanical rotary speed controller, but I soon got used to them. In use, the compact nature and lightness of the unit, combined with an impressively low level of vibration, meant that sanding wasn’t at all hard work and I kept going for far longer than I would have with a heavier sander. It was easy to use one or two handed, and on vertical

The vacuum attachment is a great addition. The controls are a little fiddly, but you soon get the hang of them 72

or horizontal surfaces. The DEROS comes with a vacuum attachment and having tried it with and without a vacuum attached I can say that it makes a huge difference to dust levels when used. If you were sanding inside a cabin or other confined space, the vacuum attachment would be a godsend. Our Mirka arrived with a selection of disks, including some unusual mesh sanding disks. I tried a few different ones and they all worked very well, especially the mesh disks, which seemed to be excellent at dust management when combined with a vacuum. The bottom line is that the DEROS is an excellent random orbital sander, quite possibly one of the best on the market, but it does come at a price. For the average DIYer the price may be too high, although let me stress that I think it is worth every penny. For the regular sander it would be a nobrainer. gas you have left in your bottle is particularly important on boats that do not have the gas locker capacity to carry a spare. The Dometic Gas Checker uses ultrasonic technology to detect the level of liquid gas in the cylinder and provides a green light when it detects gas and a red light if it doesn’t. You simply move the unit up the bottle until no gas is detected. In use, we found the detector a little temperamental. You have to push it against the bottle at exactly 90°, and it won’t work very well if the bottle is dirty or rusty, or if there is dirt on the top of the GC100. It works on cylinders of between 200mm and 350mm in diameter, which covers everything from a 904 size Camping Gaz bottle, right up to a 15kg Calor or propane cylinder. It won’t work on plastic, refillable or Calor Lite bottles. It’s a product that seems to work best once you have got the hang of it and I have found that reliability can be improved by wiping the end of the GC100 and the bottle with a wet wipe first. PRACTICAL

HOW TO

Outboard Project

M y plan this month was to get the

engine block on the workbench so that I could start to delve into its inner working. To do this I needed to peel away all the bits that were in the way and making the engine impossible to take apart. Although not strictly necessary for this stage of the operation, I thought it would help make the engine lighter and easy to move around if I started by removing the gearbox. This was going to have to come off anyway at some stage to gain access

PART 3

to the water pump and impeller as I had no idea what condition they were in and would almost certainly need to replace the impeller if nothing else. I started by removing the after market fins. If I ever get this engine going, and mounted on Olive’s transom, I am going to use these as a test to find out exactly what sort of benefit or otherwise they bring. For now though they will be added to the ever growing pile of bits taken off the engine. All the various bolt sets have been bagged up and labelled

74

and I just hope that if I ever get around to rebuilding this engine, I will remember exactly how it all went together. One benefit of recording this rebuild is that I will at least have lots of photos to refer back to if I get stuck. With the fins removed I started on the lower unit. It doesn’t matter what size outboard you have, removal of the lower unit is pretty much the same. There will be a number of bolts, and sometimes a nut or two to remove. Great care is needed with these as the stainless steel bolts are often seized into the aluminium housing, especially if they haven’t been removed regularly for servicing. I was luckily in that despite the neglected nature of the engine, the bolts all came out very easily and were showing signs of a recent application of grease. With all the nuts and bolts removed the next consideration is the gearshift linkage. The driveshaft and water cooling pipe just slide out but the gearshift linkage has to be undone to separate the lower unit from the leg. On some engines, this linkage can be found underneath a cover low down on the leg. Others you have to access after gently

The whole transom mount bracket was removed to gain access to the broken engine mounts

the cooling water intake vent. The linkage is split using a pair of spanners and then the upper fixing is slid off the shaft after first removing a little retaining collar. With all the bolts removed and the gear linkage released, the lower unit should slide out. If it still feels firmly fixed in place, even though all the fixings have been removed, it is possible that corrosion around a fixing stud is holding it in place. This aluminium oxide forms around the stainless steel shaft of the fixing and can be surprisingly stubborn when it comes to letting go. Lots of lubrication and plenty of heat usually wins through in the end. With the lower unit removed, I then set about removing the whole transom mounting assembly. There were two

reasons for this. Firstly the engine had been cut off the transom of the boat it was seized onto, which meant I was going to need new transom brackets anyway, and secondly there appeared to be far too much movement between the engine and bracket, so I suspected I would need to do some work on the engine mounts. Once the transom bracket was off, the problem of the excessive movement was quickly revealed. There are six separate flexible engine mounts and every single one of them was broken in some way. I wasn’t planning on spending any money on this engine until I had got to the bottom of what had caused the seizure, and therefore knew if there was any hope of resurrecting it, but after seeing the price

There are two bolts inside the lower cowling and four underneath that hold the engine in place 76

February 2016

of a new set of engine mounts, well over £100 in total, I couldn’t resist snapping up a full set of used ones on eBay for £10 plus a couple of quid postage. Fingers crossed I am going to need them. Next was the task of separating the engine from the lower cowling and exhaust housing. There are two bolts inside the lower housing that were so tucked away it was barely possible to get a spanner on them. Turning them about an eighth of a turn with each spanner movement, I eventually got them off. Next, with the engine upside down on a workbench, I could set about the four bolts that were fixed into the engine block from underneath. Three of these came out easily but the fourth had a head that had been rounded and nothing in my toolbox could get a grip on it. After much head scratching I resorted to putting my newly found welding skills, and recently purchased MIG welder, to the test by welding a large nut to the rounded bolt head. This worked a treat and soon the last nut was released and the engine could be withdrawn from its housing. Next month I will finally get to see inside the crankcase, and hopefully get to the bottom of the problem.

One of the engine block bolts was rounded so a large nut was welded on top to aid removal

With a welded on nut, the last engine bolt was removed and the engine withdrawn

portsfishers are the SUVs of the boating world. They offer facilities that make them great as compact cruisers, they are obviously perfect for fishing and, fitted with the right engine, they can even be used for watersports. They also happen to be among the most affordable ways of getting into boating and whatever your budget, there is bound to be a sportsfisher that fits the bill. This month we are looking at the entry end of the spectrum, with one of the most compact, and therefore most affordable, sportsfishers currently on the market. The Jeanneau Merry Fisher 605 is under 19 foot long, but still manages to offer everything you could want for a weekend afloat. Yes the facilities are rather basic, and yes the boat would feel somewhat cramped with the whole family aboard, but with prices starting at just over

ÂŁ25,000 you would be hard pushed to find a more competent package for the price. Having said that, for the base price, you will find the 605 to be spartan and devoid of many of the comforts and facilities you will almost certainly want if you are planning to spend more than a few hours at a time on board. Luckily, on the whole, the options list is well priced, but choose carefully or you could easily find the price has crept up by anything up to ÂŁ10k.

February 2016

“A 19-foot compact sportsfisher that’s very affordable at £25k”

With a tick on the options list you can have extra seating, a sunpad and a table out in the cockpit

With a boat like the 605 being so price sensitive, we have taken the unusual step of providing a full list of option prices as we go through the boat, to help you decide where best to put your tick and spend your money. The 605 is billed as a three to four berth boat, with two berths in the bow and another one or two on the convertible dinette. The bow section comprises a vee berth seating area that in day mode is rather compact, and certainly not big enough for an adult berth. What it does offer though, is an option (£151) for the all-important chemical toilet, positioned Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

inbetween the vee of the seats. At night you remove the kick panel in front of the helm and, using infill cushions which are part of the optional ‘Comfort’ pack at £409, you can create a double berth that extends into the helm footwell. The bow also provides a large open-bilge storage locker beneath the forward end of the seating. Overhead you can choose to have an optional opening hatch, which for around £150 is worth considering for the light and ventilation this offers if planning to stay onboard. Moving aft on the port side you find the dinette. In day mode this offers seating

81

The vee-berth is a good size once all the infill cushions are in place. The overhead hatch is optional

around a table for up to four, although just two would allow more elbow room and feel far more civilised. The space under the forward dinette seat is open to the forward vee berth, but could be used to store empty bags once you have unpacked. The aft dinette seat offers an under seat locker

An optional portable toilet can be installed in the bow between the vee-berth seats

on the outboard end, with the inboard area being taken up with the optional electric fridge if fitted (£1145). Neither of the dinette seats are fitted with back rests, but with the aft one butted up against the patio doors, some loose cushions could be used if required. The forward bench could, in theory, be used as a forward facing navigators seat, although with the table in place and no backrest it is likely to prove uncomfortable in choppy conditions. It would therefore be better to use the aft dinette bench for additional forward facing seating and again I think some loose cushions to lean against will make this a reasonable comfortable proposition. The dinette table drops to form a second sleeping area using an infill cushion that comes as part of the aforementioned ‘Comfort” pack. This berth is best described as a single, although at a push

82

February 2016

The dinette will seat two in comfort, or four at a squeeze. A fridge can be fitted under the aft seat

it could take two, albeit in a very cosy fashion. The helm, like everything else on the 605, is compact and basic. This doesn’t mean it is compromised though, as the optional upgraded single helm seat is comfortable and supportive, and worth every penny of the £170, even if it is just so that you have a lifting bolster to provide extra room when standing. A well-placed footrest adds to the comfort when seated. The console has room for a 7 inch multi function display, as well as your standard engine instrumentation, while still leaving enough spare space for some extra instruments of your choice, if required. An electronics package is available on the options list for £693, which includes a 7 inch Lowrance Combo Elite with HDI transducer. The helm also comes with a 12 volt socket, a steering compass Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

and a small switch panel for controlling onboard circuits. Next to the helm there is a large sliding window and, if you choose the ‘Premier Extras Pack’ (£791), you get another on the port side of the wheelhouse. As standard, the 605 comes with a single windscreen wiper in front of

The foot panel at the helm can be removed to allow the berth to extend to a full 6ft in length

83

A large opening window on either side allows plenty of fresh air into the cabin

the helm, but a second wiper is available as an option and is included in the ‘Premier’ pack. Behind the helm is the galley, which is partly concealed beneath the helm seat that lifts out of the way to provide full access. The galley houses two surprisingly large sinks, a big double cupboard below and some open storage behind. A hand pumped cold water system is optional and comes as part of the ‘Comfort’ pack if chosen. With this option you lose some storage in the cupboard below, as this is where the small water tank is located.

The galley is basic, with hand pumped cold water, but the two sinks are a very good size

There is no hob option, but used and stored sensibly there is no reason why a standalone single gas hob couldn’t be put to use onboard. In the wheelhouse floor there are two removable panels that provide access to the bilge. This offers a useful amount of low down storage, so perfect for heavier items, but being open to the bilge you need to ensure that whatever you put down here won’t be damaged by any bilge water. Overhead there is an option of an opening hatch at just over £200. This opens from the forward end, which means it will act as a wind scoop and help keep the wheelhouse cool on hot days. On the other hand, in choppy conditions you would need to keep it closed to avoid the scooping action bringing water onboard. The whole wheelhouse can be curtained off for privacy, including the front windscreen, but if you require this option you will need to put another tick on the order form, and part with an extra £364. A pair of aluminium framed glazed panels separate the wheelhouse from the cockpit, the starboard one of which slides to create a wide access. There is quite a

84

February 2016

step down into the wheelhouse from the cockpit, you would need to take care, especially if you go boating with young children. The upside of this is of course the headroom in the wheelhouse, which is well over 6ft throughout, so despite its diminutive size, this boat is eminently usable for the taller boater. This sliding patio door can be securely locked open at both the top and bottom, either fully or just a few inches, and overhead the wheelhouse roof extends a couple of feet into the cockpit to provide a modicum of shelter. Headroom under this overhang is around six foot so taller boaters will need to be careful when moving around the cockpit and equally so when passing through the sliding door, which is only just over 5ft in height. A flush fitted light in the overhang illuminates the cockpit at night and, being LED, means you could leave it on when going ashore at night to light your way back onboard without fear of draining the boat’s battery. Out in the cockpit the boat comes as standard with a full width transom seat, but cushions to go with it are an option and come included in the ‘Premier’ pack. The starboard section of the transom seat is removable to allow step through access into the cockpit from the bathing

Lazarette storage is half taken up with the fuel tank, but there is still space for a few fenders Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

platform via a small transom gate, which fixes in the open or closed position. As long as the engine is down you can step across from here to the port side bathing platform where the fuel filler is located. The middle section of the transom seat is able to slide forward to allow the engine to be fully tilted for towing or when moored. In the cockpit sole there is a large hatch that lifts to gain access to the boat’s fuel tank, fuel filter, fuel shut off and battery master switches. There is also a useful amount of lazarette storage for things such as fenders and ropes. On our test boat this large hatch was fitted without any stays, so you would need to take care when using it, and perhaps consider tying it up to avoid it falling while in the lazarette. As you

would expect of a Merry Fisher, the boat is equipped with a pair of cockpit coaming mounted rod holders, with space to mount more if required. Elsewhere in the cockpit there are a few other optional extras worth considering. For £112 you might consider the simple oval cockpit table, but splash out £844 and you can have extra modular seating on the port side, which contains some useful extra storage, a table and all the cushions you need to turn this area into a large sunpad. This option also provides a nice outside seating and dining area, which is large enough for the whole family. There is no factory cockpit enclosure on the options list, although it wouldn’t be too difficult to have one made. Jeanneau do offer a fabric sun awning at £711, to provide some basic

weather protection to the whole cockpit. Like many other sportsfishers, the 605’s sidedecks are asymmetric, with the starboard deck being a good bit wider than the port. Access from the cockpit is via a couple of steps up on either side or, if you have the extra cockpit seating, over the seats on the port side. The width of the sidedecks is helped by the rails being fixed on the outside of the gunwales. This does bring with it a risk of damage to the rails should you come alongside a high wall

86

February 2016

With the largest 115hp option, the 605 will hit 30 knots if conditions allow. The helm is comfortable and has space for additional electronics

“The 605 is extremely ‘plucky’ and performed admirably at 18-20 knots” without fenders, or if the fenders happen to pop out, but the benefit is a deck on the starboard side wide enough to get both feet side by side. As well as the guard rails, there are grab handles on the aft corners of the wheelhouse and along the wheelhouse roof on both sides, so moving forwards feels far more secure than you would expect on a boat of this size. At the bow there is a useful flat working area with non slip deck and a large anchor locker. Underway The 605 is available with a single outboard of between 70hp and 115hp. Our test boat was fitted with the largest option in the form of a Yamaha F115. This adds about £3000 to the price of a 605 powered by a 70hp engine and, unless you really want Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

to be able to hit 30 knots, I would think a happy medium may be found with the 100hp option. On our test day we were in Mediterranean waters that were very reminiscent of these found at home. The sun may have been out and the sea and sky were blue, but the short sharp chop and blustery conditions could have been taken straight out of the Solent or Thames estuary. In these conditions full speed runs were hard work and rather difficult to complete. Bring the throttle back though and the 605 behaved admirably at speeds of around 18-20 knots. Even bringing the speed up a couple more knots found the boat crashing and banging through the waves. These speeds could be maintained if required, but the throttle needed to be worked if we

87

wanted to experience any sort of comfort. Of course you do have to remember that this little boat has a waterline length of only around 16 feet so, despite the ride, it is fair to say it handled as well, or maybe even slightly better, than expected. Finding some flatter water, we were able to open the Yamaha up for some higher speed work and I have to say that the 605 is a great deal of fun to drive. The boat felt in its stride at around 4700 rpm for a speed of around 22 knots, which is also its most efficient speed, returning around 4.5 nautical miles per gallon. When throwing the boat around, the steering could sometimes feel a little hard, especially when fighting the torque of the prop, so an upgrade to an electrically assisted power steering package would make a nice addition and would provide effortless helming. Fast speed turns are completed tightly, with the boat swinging through 180° in just a couple of boat lengths although, if pushed too hard, it was possible to experience some ventilation of the prop or get the back end showing signs of slippage. To me though, this all added to the fun of driving this little boat and I came away with the impression that

The throttle is tucked under the coaming, but in practice this didn’t create a problem

the 605 is as much a little sportsboat as it is a sportsfisher. In flat water the 115 will deliver a top speed that is a slither over 30 knots and in the process feels solid and competent. Conclusion The 605 is a fun and practical little boat that is small enough to be trailed yet big enough to deliver facilities for a day, weekend, or more afloat. Despite its short length it offers full standing headroom in the wheelhouse without looking dumpy. In fact we think the 605 looks very stylish and well proportioned on the water. Talking of stylish, the 605 is also available with a

88

February 2016

blue hull by ordering the ‘Legend” version. Obviously this is another cost option, but at just £373 it is very affordable and definitely worth considering. If you are looking for an offshore boat that the whole family can stay onboard for a week at a time, the 605 is unlikely to meet your requirements, but if you are looking for something that can offer a great entry point into boating, something that is perfect for coastal day boating with the family or for cosy weekending for a couple, and most importantly, if you want all this in a brand new boat package that will get you boating for around £25k, then the 605 might just be perfect. Just watch that options list, choose carefully where you

The 605 is a fun boat, and delivers an almost sportsboat type driving experience

put your tick, and you should be able to put a nicely spec’d 605 on the water for a little over £30k.
